Pete Bowman flies into a half frozen Esnagami Lake in Northern Ontario where fishing conditions are questionable.
He decides to first river fish for Speckled Trout, then hit open-water shorelines for Walleye and finally hit “warmer” water bays for Northern Pike.

this patch behind me right now is where
0:08
we came through earlier and now we can
0:11
get back to I've never had this cool
0:14
never done a high feeder script I've
0:16
never done what I had to get home hosted
0:19
every Coco is like we fish right here
0:21
that's a good fish close like oh my god
0:25
that's the bonus of the year for me
0:26
right there
0:27
the fish in Canada show brought to you
0:31
in part by sales the outdoor superstore
0:36
Coleman the Outdoor company must gulp
0:40
proudly Canadian since 1951 Cooper Tires
0:44
life the road trip come on let's go and
0:47
Princecraft boat dominates the waters
0:53
on today's fishing Canada show I face it
0:55
the unique situation hello it looks more
0:57
mommy oh it's not in fact it's so cold
1:00
at the lake and still losing its sight
1:03
now this walleye pike and stuck up out
1:05
there but due to these conditions I have
1:07
no idea where to start
1:09
essentially I'm going to get on a plane
1:10
fly in assess the situation and go from
1:13
there it's going to be interesting
1:19
at a certain point in the far north of
1:21
Ontario you just run out of rows and
1:23
that's my situation this week I'll
1:25
remember where there's a will there's a
1:27
way and when the pavement stops in the
1:29
north a flow plane becomes the vehicle
1:31
of choice today I'll be playing as the
1:33
game Eli's remote spots and very few
1:35
people ever get the opportunity to see
1:37
let alone fish from the reports I've
1:39
heard the ice is breaking up and has
1:41
started to recede this could be perfect
1:43
timing upon arrival I had a half a day
1:48
to kill so I thought I'd go out and
1:50
scout the lake and the conditions this
1:52
time of year and this far north things
1:53
can be pretty unpredictable both with
1:55
the fishing and the weather my hosted
2:00
Esna Gami Lodge told me to expect the
2:02
unexpected trust me I won't leave them
2:05
there my first esna gummy fish and it is
2:11
a little oh my god it's a white fish as
2:17
a bonus fish it wasn't coming up for him
2:18
but a great little fish ok a white fish
2:24
it's only a white fish in the boat and
2:27
44 degree water temps the unexpected has
2:29
definitely started to kick in
2:35
right now
2:37
whoa
2:39
break infectious technologies the spring
2:45
ice breakup is a funny thing from the
2:47
shores you usually just see a break
2:49
apart pull back and eventually disappear
2:51
but out on the water it's a whole
2:52
different ballgame huge patches of ice
2:55
can travel around pushed by wind and
2:57
currents and show up where you least
2:58
expect them
2:59
ok while early season fishing can
3:02
attract lively and hungry fish it can
3:03
also attract problem now you can tell
3:06
obviously today there's lots of ice
3:07
spill on the lake and then you know
3:09
what's breaking up it's good it's good
3:11
for fishing a pike get in the mold the
3:13
cheddar cheddar the problem is this
3:15
patch behind me right now anywhere we
3:18
came through earlier and now we can't
3:20
get back to now you think you can plow
3:22
it maybe with your boats but the problem
3:24
is these cedar strip boats cannot take
3:27
that ice it's believe it or not looks
3:28
like skim ice is floating but we've seen
3:30
chunks today is that thing and just blow
3:32
these boats apart there's a guy over on
3:33
an island right here that the boys from
3:36
the lodge came and just had to rescue so
3:37
he punched his boat probably puts the
3:39
hole through it or rip it apart or
3:40
something like that they've come to get
3:41
him what's probably going to happen is
3:43
we're going to have to wait for those
3:44
guys to get tacky back and they're going
3:46
to come back and get us and taxi us back
3:48
so I've never had this before pretty
3:50
well
3:56
let's bomb excited
4:07
Wow hello Terry
4:10
good work boys I've done this before
4:13
other boats I've never done it that
4:14
leadership I've never been when I had to
4:16
get home it blocked in like this so
4:19
never knew you'd be ice breaker today I
4:21
guess my Byford at this point there's
4:26
nothing to do but head back to the lodge
4:27
I'll wait and see what tomorrow brings
4:30
[Music]
4:39
with the ice on the lake still causing
4:42
problems and decided to go out for
4:43
speckled trout it gives the walleye and
4:45
pike water another day to warm up I'll
4:47
be joined by Eric lund who runs the
4:48
lodge he knows this stretch of the FMO
4:50
Gami river better than anyone in late
4:53
spring it's wrote the summer anglers
4:54
we've got more croak walleye and pike
4:56
here than they can count it's also an
4:58
incredible early season Pro fishery
5:00
with plenty of cold water brookey's to
5:01
go after when the walleye and northern
5:02
need a bit more time to get in the bite
5:04
mode we just got here
5:06
I dropped that watching my jig to see
5:09
how it was bringing in headfirst like
5:11
this er yeah sure just things like that
5:14
look at that ladies and gentlemen I show
5:17
that to the camera here like that first
5:19
a beautiful brother another one close to
5:21
the boat I was sitting there watching
5:23
get my jig all worked up seeing okay
5:25
before we cast let's get ready here
5:27
first of all first stop s in egami River
5:30
right yeah I didn't gommi River and I'm
5:32
just dropping down there boom I hit a
5:33
trope and he got off and then that's
5:35
just tired good riff finishes drift cast
5:37
way out there finish it up here and
5:38
might be the same fish there I was look
5:40
at that what a gorgeous
5:41
Logan fish that is awesome here you go
5:44
Eric and I were talking earlier both
5:46
these trout like a brown trout and
5:48
speckled trout in a creek they're a very
5:50
aggressive fish they're not they're not
5:52
always the finesse can pound test line
5:54
or the fly-fishing on these fish are
5:55
predators in these river systems so and
5:58
they will smash a lot right there yep
6:00
they got the piece and they'll grab
6:02
whatever they can all the speckled trout
6:05
numbers swim thick in this river you
6:07
still need to coax them especially in
6:08
frigid water
6:10
now there talk about no finesse Oh
6:14
beautiful fast
6:16
it's the braided braided line with a
6:20
spoon it's no wonder that's my dad's
6:21
favorite fish used to fish the Nipigon
6:23
River for those things gorgeous fish man
6:25
this river is stacked of the thing today
6:29
we're using small jigs spinners and
6:31
spoons in both subtle colors as well as
6:33
very bright catsup scream are usually
6:35
best followed by slowly pulling your
6:37
bait into and through current brakes and
6:39
seeing us is that not incredible it is
6:42
Wow
6:43
no those spots only little blue look at
6:46
the Blues on them they're just we're
6:48
gonna prettiest fish going this one
6:50
wants to get going hi it's the most fun
6:55
I've got vision of the log I like
6:57
hanging on the tinsel now look at that
7:00
look at yeah look at a different say
7:02
sometimes they're all looking a
7:04
different different look to a lot of
7:06
them so nice I wish you would have kept
7:08
count now and how many fish we got today
7:10
we got to be well over two dozen now
7:13
wait one ah they definitely have a big
7:15
meal in mind you look at the size of
7:17
that brookie and that's that bait yep
7:19
yeah that's right he's not a big brookie
7:21
at all
7:26
mr. t is a healthy population of 16
7:29
construct cookies today unreal and this
7:32
is I mean we're talking a cold front for
7:35
sure clip in here right yeah the
7:36
temperature is gone now it was nice and
7:38
we could go and drop right down again I
7:40
still up in the lake beam in this water
7:42
[Music]
7:44
look at that amazing color folks how is
7:49
that for God's creation it's like we
7:55
fish right here oh there you go that's a
8:02
good fish whoa nice oh my gosh that's
8:05
the bonus of the year for me right there
8:08
we're back on is the gamy lake the
8:10
temperatures are starting to rise and it
8:12
looks like the walleye are starting to
8:13
bite fan fire right there no this is a
8:16
decent fish as well you have a slot
8:19
limit for eats or not up here no we just
8:21
you can have one in your limit of Thea
8:24
rater limit of four you can have one
8:26
over 18 and then three under and your
8:29
take home and then the conservation is 1
8:31
and 1 but since I've owned the lodge
8:33
it's you know it's over 20 years now
8:34
we've released all wall-like 24 inches
8:37
or longer that as well as northerns that
8:40
are 30 inches are longer and you know
8:43
those are the big females and spawners
8:45
and that way we've been able to keep our
8:47
fishery very healthy yep and these are
8:51
the kinds guests like to take a few fish
8:52
home that's not a problem
8:54
yeah that's great keeps the lake forever
8:57
kills the fishery oh nice one then why
9:04
lie there you're putting that on the net
9:06
sure that's because it's your first big
9:10
one okay good they go exactly real nice
9:15
yes Emily do you want to get us off you
9:17
want me again look this how do you think
9:18
about sure whatever
9:21
oh let you save my gun oh come on you
9:25
got to be kidding me so far so good you
9:27
are yeah keep in the middle one thing
9:34
about fishing in the north like that
9:36
right there
9:37
pop the motor out sweetie we're getting
9:39
closer to shore bump the motor out I
9:40
made a cast out but I my jig was
9:42
basically right on the boat I just left
9:44
it there under a you know a motor
9:45
working here and it doesn't seem to
9:46
scare the husband oh well this is a
9:48
really nice very nice surface as walleye
9:50
right there but yeah the motor doesn't
9:55
seem to spoken too much even you
9:57
confront the trout stuff now motors
9:58
there and they're right beside the boat
10:04
did you know that early spring can offer
10:06
up some of the best pike fishing in
10:08
Ontario renowned writer hunter angler
10:11
and outdoorsman Ernest Hemingway once
10:13
told his son you make your own luck on
10:16
fishing Canada we use this philosophy a
10:18
lot and it's definitely true in the
10:20
early spring when Isis just melted on
10:23
Ontario Lakes looking for some luck
10:25
catching monster northern pike you can
10:27
easily make your own by heading to the
10:29
shallows of these frigid waters
10:31
particularly where streams and rivers
10:33
enter the lake creating nutrient-rich
10:35
habitats
10:36
it's the perfect spot for both eating
10:38
and spawning as an added bonus the
10:40
moving water from these inflows also
10:42
attract walleye perch and a host of
10:45
other sport fish a good fisherman knows
10:47
that the fish won't come to you but with
10:49
a better understanding of Ontario spring
10:51
fishing conditions you'll know exactly
10:53
where to go to them it's all a matter of
10:55
getting luck on your side just another
10:58
reason to go fishing Ontario today
11:03
fella doubleheader all right couples are
11:11
good call the teeth of a walleye they're
11:14
raking across it up starter model there
11:18
goes better decent I'm going to put that
11:25
bad this web address is it pulling yeah
11:29
that's nice one nice strong fish yeah
11:31
it's all just a stay down deep strong
11:33
fish not giant but definitely likes to
11:36
pull some line awesome gorgeous fish -
11:42
yeah and beautiful and they always look
11:45
ol nicer when to sunshine oh man
11:47
that golden color on them look at that
11:49
middle she's still hanging tire you were
11:50
wondering how good I was
11:51
yeah there you go that if you're going
11:54
to get one more fish out and I get that
11:55
right there
11:58
perfect nice and chunky yeah
12:00
good-looking fish we can we're just
12:03
basically not far from the lodge and
12:05
we're just going out for a little foray
12:07
to see what we can do okay so yeah is
12:15
this simply a spawning population in
12:17
here right now yeah
12:18
oh all you bugger up lunch against
12:24
Garrett yes big drift right on that now
12:30
you can pick it up half decent one I
12:33
guess sir yeah nice
12:34
oh you're you got some ma you got some
12:36
reaction-time beat yeah like that
12:42
that's good fish yes and I want to hear
12:44
that word all got him I got her yeah
12:46
okay see a nice isn't the gambia Wally
12:48
that by the way is fish number three in
12:51
that same in on my friend hmm
12:55
do that Lake is obviously loaded with
12:59
them I went out for a little afternoon
13:01
fish and popping these guys directly
13:04
below the boat that fish was we're in
13:07
about seven feet of water right here yep
13:10
shallow warmer water this body is just
13:12
cold
13:13
beautiful nice fish B thank you oh that
13:22
minnows done three fish that size on
13:26
that middle there you go good the last
13:29
half of it will look horrible oh there
13:33
you go that's a good fish whoa nice oh
13:37
my gosh that's the bonus of the year for
13:39
you okay I'm feeling a lot better now
13:43
with the walleye biting and the ice
13:45
nowhere in sight it's time to push it on
13:47
for some Pike
13:48
I just know they'll be on the move this
13:50
time of year and hungry
13:51
did he ever rail that fast Allan oh yeah
13:54
chunky little fish I got him
13:59
I thought for sure I lost that fish he
14:01
hit it hard and then swam to the boat
14:03
100 mile an hour here we go it's very
14:09
neat come into this Bay looking around
14:10
Arizona very early season base we
14:14
started earlier over the walleye it was
14:15
47 degrees the other day was 44 degrees
14:18
47 degrees right across the lakes 50 50
14:22
point seven here a little bit this
14:25
beijos a fish
14:29
not as you go there you go come right up
14:33
and grab oh nice going hey that was
14:39
awesome buddy that is a nice fish
14:41
they're a little long skinny maybe not
14:43
skinny maybe fat to Morris actually a
14:45
big fish she's a nice fish I guess I
14:48
kind of exploded the bottom yeah too
14:51
literally
14:52
oh yeah it was great good job as a guide
14:54
for you honest I saw the side of her out
14:57
there and if you want that cradle oh
15:01
yeah I'll get the cradle in the sack
15:03
here just and you know the thing that's
15:05
important is you cast it far enough in
15:07
front of her where you weren't yeah
15:09
gonna spook her yeah I'm going to try
15:13
and bring her on the other side if
15:14
she'll come around
15:15
okay sure whoa there we go oh yeah I got
15:21
her nice there yeah Josh Peters in her
15:27
rig there yeah and I think that perfect
15:30
now used to be done okay here we are
15:35
elevate it put a little grip on her oh
15:37
that's a beautiful fish not bad okay
15:42
that's we're back
15:52
yes one offspring plague vision right
15:55
there oh oh that's fish you great cast
15:59
to it yeah see what happened there would
16:02
it go by he saw the fish I asked them
16:04
where the head goes with a head was
16:06
facing he told me so you capture that
16:08
side of the fish we lost it in the in
16:10
the waves or the shadow would stop them
16:11
has been all over 70 levels saw that big
16:14
hit they've not bloated good eyeballs
16:16
running really nice
16:17
[Music]
16:26
today's hot spot is a pre-spawn stage
16:29
area for northern pike in front of jack
16:31
fish bay the waypoint on your screen
16:33
will get you right there big fish will
16:35
lay dormant in this area waiting for the
16:37
exact moment the mother nature deems
16:39
perfect for the trek into the shallows
16:40
by slowly running a number 3 inline
16:43
spinner over these lethargic yet hungry
16:45
beasts an angler has a good chance of
16:47
connecting with the fish of a lifetime
16:49
40 plus inch pike are quite common in
16:52
this area of the lake for more hotspots
16:54
like this one check out fish and canada
16:56
calm
17:00
[Music]
17:05
after catching a decent pike in the bay
17:08
and spotting a bunch of smaller fish we
17:10
decided to check out the slightly deeper
17:11
water at the mouth this time of year
17:13
pike travel back and forth between
17:14
different temperatures of water eric
17:16
said that traditionally the mode of this
17:18
Bay is a pretty good pre spawn staging
17:20
area oh oh but oh gee that's a good fish
17:23
get the cradle for that yeah hide not
17:27
real long like he's not a no but it's a
17:29
lot better a fat fish want to get him
17:31
out
17:31
Oh big letter to me need fish oh really
17:38
nice daughter hang on here oh wow
17:42
like that folks Wow holy moly what a
17:48
beat already hold her up it's a nice
17:50
pikes come on her Wow Wow that's bonus
17:55
fish that's a bonus big buddy come up
17:57
here a special present look at this oh I
18:00
gotta put her back what a massive beast
18:05
bye-bye oh oh look a be easy man nice
18:14
job he's the man radar goes there's a
18:16
transition on the way and we're gonna be
18:18
way back in there on the drop or this
18:20
fishing transition coming in boom buddy
18:24
that's a big fish I don't have to
18:26
mention that little 40 Oh heavy
18:28
Oh girth perfect yeah so that's the
18:32
bonus of the year for me right there go
18:34
to speckle trout fishing and I catch a
18:36
giant Gator like that lava
18:40
[Music]
