you know if I were you I wouldn't be
0:07
messing around if you get the hook set
0:09
into those fish because you know the
0:10
boys are going to be wanting to be this
0:12
real bad yeah
0:13
I wonder how Roy and and you're doing
0:16
you know what they're both pretty darn
0:18
good fishermen I'll say that I think the
0:20
pressures on the boys of course anybody
0:22
to have a boat full of finished by now
0:24
you realize that all right yeah we don't
0:29
like it one bit
0:30
ah the fish in Canada so not to you in
0:37
part by Ram trucks nothing worked harder
0:40
than a rail sterling trusted on the
0:43
water since 1952 mercury and for its
0:47
number one on the water and outdoor
0:50
Canada Canada's only national fishing
0:52
and hunting magazines

you know how I always say this is what
1:00
it's really all about every time I catch
1:02
a big fish
1:03
well it's 6:20 a.m. in Alberta Canada
1:06
and Here I am sitting on a dock of the
1:09
bay watching mother nature locks this
1:11
incredible fireball in the sky this
1:14
moment in itself is enough to make me
1:16
realize just how fortunate I really am
1:19
but what preceded this was a spectacle
1:22
that can't be put to words folks this
1:25
was the masterpiece mother nature
1:27
unveiled last night as she tucked us
1:29
into bed now that is really what it's
1:33
all about one of those moments in life
1:35
where nothing else matters you're where
1:37
you want to be with people you want to
1:39
be with doing what you love to do
1:42
catching big fish well that's just the
1:45
icing on the cake the cake in this
1:47
particular instance is Winifred Lake the
1:50
icing some of the biggest Pike in note
1:53
world with only a handful of trophy
1:56
northern pike lakes in this part of the
1:58
country narrowing it down to this one
2:00
wasn't that difficult I've been here
2:02
before and believe me it's the real deal
2:09
we chose benefit lake in northeastern
2:11
Alberta for a number of reasons which if
2:13
you're planning a trip you'll want to
2:15
take note of first of all this is a real
2:17
wilderness lake in a remote area between
2:19
coal lake and Fort McMurray in the
2:21
southern good Buffalo region of Alberta
2:23
meaning fishing pressure is almost
2:25
non-existent
2:26
winifred Lake Lodge a five-star
2:28
wilderness fishing resort has imposed
2:30
their own limits on walleye and pike the
2:32
fish in this lake go very slowly since
2:34
they have a relatively short growing
2:35
season of three to four months which
2:37
makes this self-imposed no-kill policy
2:39
on walleye and only one kill per day on
2:41
fight 21 inches or less even more
2:43
compelling catch and release with a zero
2:46
bag limit was fundamental to
2:47
establishing the trophy Lake here where
2:49
the average size of walleye is now three
2:51
to four pounds and the average length of
2:52
pike has 40 inches coming here is a
2:55
no-brainer for us
2:57
joining Pete and I on this trip is Roy
3:00
arms chairman receive all and president
3:02
of Cooper Tire & Rubber Company and
3:04
Director of Product Management Scott
3:06
Jamison Roy was the driving force behind
3:09
getting us here literally
3:13
a couple of years ago Roy caught the
3:16
biggest pike of his life forty eight
3:18
incher on Lake Muskoka but all this did
3:21
was stoke a fire in his belly ever since
3:23
then he's been obsessed with catching
3:25
the holy grail of hike a 50 inch quest
3:28
monster northern unfortunately this has
3:31
become a real challenge for Roy because
3:33
unlike most of us he doesn't have the
3:35
freedom to just jump in a boat on the
3:37
weekends and go fishing most of his time
3:39
is spent in a plane flying around the
3:42
globe servicing customers it's what you
3:44
do when you run one of the biggest tire
3:46
companies on the planet those 40 million
3:49
Cooper Tires a year don't get sold on
3:51
their own so when an opportunity arises
3:53
where he can get off the grid for just a
3:56
few precious days and spend some quality
3:58
fishing time with like-minded people he
4:00
grabs the opportunity with both hands
4:02
especially if it involves the quest of
4:05
the holy grail of fishing
4:09
after a very special and relaxing flight
4:12
from Peterborough Ontario we landed in
4:14
Fort McMurray and after a four-hour
4:17
drive
4:17
did I mention this place was remote we
4:20
arrived at beautiful winterberg Lake
4:22
Lodge our good friend and Alberta
4:26
fishing specialist ray call rust drove
4:28
in from north of Edmonton to meet us at
4:29
the lodge to their prince crab boats and
4:31
we're good to go now Cooper fishing
4:34
Canada challenge was about to begin
4:37
since there were four of us I thought it
4:40
might be quite fun if Roy and I teamed
4:42
up and had a little friendly competition
4:43
you know the men against the boys sort
4:46
of thing needless to say we got no
4:48
arguments it's on the first thing we did
4:53
was have a little map section and based
4:55
on my previous experiences here we laid
4:57
out a game plan and because I'm the only
5:00
one with that previous experience it was
5:02
really quite simple
5:03
I made sure Roy and I had the prime spot
5:05
as the apex predator here these trophy
5:10
northerns aren't any different than most
5:11
other pike they use weed patches as
5:13
ambush points to chow down and the
5:16
biggest accumulation of those is off of
5:18
ego point up towards the northeast
5:20
corner of the lake this point didn't get
5:23
its name by accident Eagles and eagle
5:25
nests are visible along its entire
5:27
length it's more like a peninsula that
5:30
runs Northwest with wheat patches
5:32
running virtually its full length on the
5:34
southeast side the weeds start at about
5:37
10 to 15 feet offshore and run out from
5:40
there another 100 feet or so it's a huge
5:42
area a great place to begin the hunt and
5:45
win this competition
5:48
good one oh yeah Thursday oh nice fish
5:53
nice fish boy
5:54
and both of our eggs this real better
5:58
hold up not a boy nice nice nice work
6:04
now that's what I call a catch man
6:07
that's a great northern this is what you
6:09
come here for all right okay everybody
6:12
can see we can stay black though not
6:15
sure but I think we might have win the
6:17
competition boys all right
6:20
clam I don't know I don't make the boys
6:23
with a little thing you want okay what
6:28
your message there Scotty
6:29
well I got a little fish in tell Pete we
6:31
sent a picture of a big fish back to the
6:34
office oh no hoping it was almost as big
6:38
as him okay Scotty for I think a lot of
6:43
our our viewing audience like my buddies
6:46
like myself like Dan's we have either a
6:48
light truck or a heavy truck what's good
6:50
Cooper tire for that application
6:52
well you and angels have had great
6:55
experience on the 83s ableto yeah that's
6:59
been a great tire for us last few years
7:01
it continues the win awards two new
7:04
products that we're really excited about
7:05
in the light truck department is an 80
7:09
tire with a severe snow rating nice so
7:14
we call that mountain snow flake right
7:16
Yankee W your tornado that's 80 W as
7:19
well as the XT for wood that's a tire
7:22
that will have similar all terrain
7:24
features and benefits to the 83 yep all
7:27
train characteristics like cut and chip
7:29
and mud traction right and then it will
7:32
have similar snow traction to what you
7:35
would see in our are dedicated still
7:37
product
7:39
give me all right we got every fat Wow
7:44
you know man I don't know I will beat
7:48
the boys with it but I'll tell you what
7:49
exact think we needed it though for us
7:51
exactly oh yeah you know if I were you I
7:58
wouldn't be messing around be getting
8:00
Hooksett into those fish because you
8:01
know the boys are going to be wanting to
8:02
be this real bad yeah you got if he's on
8:06
he's on another good day efficient
8:08
glutton first Lake don't smell it oh you
8:13
might make that like a family's day but
8:16
that is delicious right there yeah you
8:22
get it there you go
8:24
I think the pressures on the boys wonder
8:26
how to do it of course they might have a
8:28
boat full of fish point out you realize
8:30
that for about any time buddy
8:34
okay beautiful you guys want to wear it
8:40
at the beach
8:41
alright come on we I could hear
8:43
grounding in their tears a little bit of
8:46
salad with your bike Wow yes yeah oh
8:50
good good another big marker out on this
9:03
one clump we'll know where it is we'll
9:05
come back later you know yeah I think it
9:12
was maybe three years ago and you and I
9:14
fished together first time yeah talked
9:16
about our plans and stuff in Canada yeah
9:18
and since that time we've we've doubled
9:23
what we thought we were going to be oh
9:25
and right now we're we're in line to
9:28
move ahead and probably doubling that
9:30
again over the next few years so it's
9:32
been really great now and I think the
9:34
lot of things have helped us one is the
9:36
our partnerships here particularly with
9:38
the fishing Canada you guys have
9:40
represented us very well thank you but
9:42
secondly it's the products we've had
9:46
some great products it's been well
9:47
accepted here in Canada so you know
9:49
we've been very very pleased with where
9:51
we're at please how the
9:53
Canadian consumers have really latched
9:55
onto our products where our dealers are
9:57
continuing to demand and request more
9:59
and that's always a good sign
10:02
yeah he's not done he's not done he's
10:06
not done we put her partner
10:10
[Laughter]
10:16
come on hello baby
10:20
yeah you said it right there hey big boy
10:27
you got a good fish on here
10:29
hang on even lift that motor up
10:36
go back again this way keep going this
10:39
way as much as you can trot down and and
10:42
out yep like that yeah good I think a
10:47
big foot like this and they're gonna
10:49
bring it all
10:50
yeah like that thank you going don't go
10:53
slack man holy man
11:02
oh there's no idea how big this play
11:06
here
11:06
ergo you get a hold us thing up by all
11:08
sort of folks pretty people have to get
11:11
up a hand okay ready put your hand under
11:13
the belly like that's good like that
11:14
and really nice and tight if you can get
11:16
it slighted got brother forward all
11:19
right that's a big dog right now wow
11:22
that's awesome little fish man so it was
11:25
a great way what a great fish if they
11:28
beat this fish if they beat this fish
11:30
they deserve totally everything that's
11:32
true mass when the blocking Colossus win
11:35
and that's what you're supposed to do
11:36
right that's right let the bottoms will
11:37
sit up in the water okay I will release
11:43
your fish any day my brother thanks
11:46
coming up running off thanks for having
11:47
ice nice
11:51
[Music]
11:56
today's hot spot is a big we d-flat
11:59
close to eagle point on one inferred
12:01
lake in alberta the waypoint on your
12:03
screen will get you right there the
12:05
weeds in this area growing clumps and
12:07
that's what you need to concentrate on
12:09
in order to catch the big northern pike
12:11
that reside here
12:12
although single hook baits like swim
12:14
baits spinner baits and weedless spoons
12:16
are easier to work our Cooper Tire
12:18
guests did very well with treble hooked
12:20
spoons dragged above and through the
12:22
weeds every now and then don't be afraid
12:25
to cast into the open water adjacent the
12:27
weak clumps cruising pike are always
12:29
pressing for more hot spots like this
12:32
one check out efficient and calm
12:36
[Music]
12:40
now were you one of those dads that when
12:43
they were little kids did you did you
12:45
always make the effort to get them out
12:46
fishing or sell those kids I had I don't
12:50
know if you recall these but the these
12:53
little roll round seats that you put the
12:54
kids in when they're 1 2 years old what
12:57
a head was a flat bottom boat had a lot
13:00
of space in the middle of it ok so I put
13:02
I put the chair in there and they would
13:04
bounce and bounce back and forth across
13:06
the boat and along like three little
13:09
gate and then when you get a fish they'd
13:10
stop and they just start gazing at what
13:12
you were doing and ceiling fish get up
13:16
get up get up got oh yeah good fish I
13:20
can't tell you he's not coming up real
13:22
easy that is a fish my friend well you
13:27
can oh that's oh that's huge all this
13:29
that is huge that's a nice fish man this
13:32
is a log look at this look at me yeah
13:36
holy smokes ok let me see that clear
13:40
your means how many of you at home get a
13:42
guide that does this point Oh a TV host
13:44
of all this is the ultimate monster oh
13:48
that's beautiful
13:50
what's not done he's not done he's not
13:52
done you're not done
13:55
what are their partners this is what
13:58
people travel all over the world to get
14:00
in terms of northern I'm going to keep
14:03
the line tight on them yeah just keep it
14:04
tight let them wear else oh I love it I
14:09
love it I love it what they do that I
14:14
love it would they do that okay baby I
14:17
might have one more run in them okay
14:19
I've done tight unbelievable Roy Roy Roy
14:24
okay you got him yeah I think we're
14:28
going for lunch
14:29
maybe we can going for dinner like wow
14:33
this is what it's about it's a
14:35
magnificent beautiful color yeah he's
14:38
just if this fish was as fat as some of
14:40
the other ones we've been catching today
14:42
this thing would be probably 3300 pounds
14:45
I tell you what a song feels very heavy
14:48
put her away ready do us the honors
14:51
see ya Oh oh wow
14:56
holding that thing up there I couldn't
14:59
get I'm tellin ya and it would get the
15:01
whole thing without off it was quick
15:03
oh wow what what a great guy so the
15:07
premise of this episode as you don't put
15:09
the beginning Roy and I got together and
15:11
decided that we would challenge our
15:13
we'll call them our better halves for
15:15
lack of better term our lieutenants if
15:18
you will Peter Bowman and Scott Jamison
15:21
from Cooper tired so they're on another
15:22
boat somewhere on this Lake Winifred
15:26
Lake and the challenge was to get the
15:28
biggest fish for a bragging rights for
15:30
the rest of the year and and you just
15:32
witness that we and measure that fish
15:34
but you just witnessed it I would I
15:36
would be absolutely shocked if we didn't
15:39
win the synaptic and a go ahead my
15:42
partners in and all and you're gonna
15:43
you're gonna have to live with it it's
15:47
alright thank you very much for joining
15:50
us this this has been an absolute
15:52
pleasure I know it's always a pleasure
15:53
it's one thing having great partners
15:55
like yourselves Cooper Tire the support
15:57
us and have done so for a number of
15:59
years but to be able to mine out of that
16:03
a great fishing partner is truly a bonus
16:06
in its I thank you very much
16:09
[Music]
16:11
to get to today's great pike fishing we
16:14
first flew from Peterborough Ontario to
16:16
Fort McMurray Alberta next we drove
16:19
south on highway 63 and then onto
16:21
highway 881 to Conklin we then turn east
16:25
on Northland Drive and followed science
16:27
to Winfred Lake Lodge without standing
16:30
meals accommodations and of course great
16:33
fishing this destination is classes one
16:35
of the top lodges in the province of
16:37
Alberta
16:39
[Music]
16:46
on today's klp we're going to focus on
16:49
the key factors of knowledge package
16:51
something that usually comes from
16:53
experience as well I hate to say it but
16:55
something Roy and I both have a little
16:56
bit of a John the other guys it was no
16:59
great with this stuff
17:00
the big advantage here is that I have
17:03
been on this lake before and neither the
17:05
other two have and that's a huge
17:07
advantage certainly in our little
17:09
competition we've got going here today
17:11
but also on anybody about it getting the
17:14
information from the locals or somebody
17:15
who's been on that lake fishing is key
17:18
it's vital in it absolutely in that
17:20
experience in that knowledge here on
17:23
this lake was very handy for us to have
17:25
a great couple days of fishing
17:26
yeah because Lake has a ton of fish but
17:29
only one area has big fish we knew it
17:31
they didn't that was the team that's the
17:33
case I feel asleep the fish in Canada
17:37
show brought to you in part by sales the
17:41
outdoor superstore Coleman the Outdoor
17:45
company musk all proudly Canadian since
17:49
1951 Cooper Tires life the road trips
17:53
come on let's go and rinse Kraft both
17:57
dominate the water
18:00
