250,000 I don't care what river you're
0:23
on that's a lot of Fish band look at

1:01
today we venture East to an iconic
1:03
fishing destination the quinty central
1:06
Atlantic Salmon River known as the miror
1:08
machine since the beginning of
1:10
documented times salmon have migrated up
1:12
this waterway in search of their
1:13
maternal spawning grounds unfortunately
1:16
Global over harvesting has taken its
1:18
toll on the Atlantic salmon stocks and
1:20
sadly the Mir Mach is no exception but
1:23
today finds us here in search of another
1:25
once at risk species that is actually
1:27
enjoying a Resurgence and in fact
1:30
prompted the creation of a brand new
1:31
fishing tournament the Striper Cup
1:34
headquartered in the city of Mir machine
1:35
New
1:36
Brunswick Miri is the largest city in
1:38
Northern no Brunswick this area of
1:40
marami has been continuously inhabited
1:42
for over 3,000 years by the middle of
1:45
the 19th century Boar's Island was the
1:47
largest ship building and Commercial
1:49
establishment in this part of Canada and
1:51
played a major role in crafting our
1:52
nation's history it's now a Canadian
1:54
heritage site as evidenced by tall masks
1:56
that have become somewhat of a landmark
1:58
for
1:58
Marmi
2:01
for Generations tidal saltwater flowed
2:03
Inland and created an ecosystem for
2:06
anris fish such as salmon sturgeon alfe
2:09
and strip bass that seasonally moved up
2:12
the estuaries in large numbers sadly we
2:15
made some big mistakes throughout our
2:17
history in terms of over harvesting fish
2:19
stocks however today by using good
2:22
fishery management protocols we can see
2:24
a trend shifting towards sustainability
2:26
and possibly even growth a great example
2:29
example is the Mirchi stripe bass
2:31
fishery which had to be shut down in
2:34
2004 fortunately for us these fish are
2:36
prolific a mature female can broadcast
2:39
up to 3 million eggs a season so by 2013
2:42
the department of fisheries and oceans
2:44
open up the fishery in the waters
2:46
adjacent to the Maritime Provinces in
2:48
the southern Gulf of St
2:49
Lawrence what better way to celebrate
2:51
the explosive Resurgence of this fishery
2:53
than to have a fishing tournament the
2:55
town's folk are calling it The Striper
2:57
Cup the winner with the highest two-day
2:59
total of four fish gets a $5,000 cash
3:02
prize as well there's a grand prize for
3:05
a gorgeous Princecraft boat and matching
3:07
fourstroke Merc not too shabby for an
3:09
inaugural fishing
3:11
tournament we'll be checking in on the
3:13
event throughout the show but the main
3:15
purpose of our travel east is to sample
3:17
some of this incredible fishery for
3:19
ourselves joining us today is good buddy
3:22
Joe Anthony Outdoorsman extraordinaire
3:25
who has his finger on the pulse of this
3:27
East Coast fishery I manage a snow crab
3:29
process in facility which is located
3:31
about 2 hours from
3:33
here by the way we did something pretty
3:35
foolish today which we do on a probably
3:38
more often than we like to admit we
3:39
brought no net well actually it wasn't
3:42
our fault uh Joe Anthony our fly fishing
3:44
expert said nah you don't need a net for
3:46
these things now
3:48
bye you better hope you don't get a big
3:50
one on brother cuz you're going in Joe
3:53
hooked up a very popular fishing
3:56
technique out east is to use a fly
3:58
fishing rod look at you with that fly
4:00
rod but bringing a big fish to the boat
4:03
and keeping it there on a 9-t fly
4:05
fishing rod while you bend down the
4:06
lipet kers at problems with a net the
4:09
problems go away conventional casting
4:11
gear is faster and much more productive
4:14
I never knew Joe was a fly Fisher still
4:16
Joe gave it the old College try Joe took
4:19
it all in stride but switched over to a
4:22
more traditional rod and reel
4:23
combination we're still impressed that
4:25
he landed that striper with a fly
4:26
fishing rod and reel and no net we're
4:29
not going to let him forget
4:31
that go hey there you go Joe good one
4:35
yeah not bad it's all about the
4:37
miraculous Revival of the stripe bass
4:40
this is how you regain a fishery today
4:43
Anglers are allowed to have just one
4:44
fish in their possession and it must be
4:46
between 55 and 65 cm everything else
4:49
must be released a special temporary
4:52
variance was obtained for this event to
4:54
allow for a two fish limit prangler
4:56
there's an estimated 250,000 fish in the
4:58
northwest Fork of the marami doing their
5:01
thing to keep their numbers growing get
5:03
picture is it a good one Joe it's a good
5:06
one everyone's everyone's a good one
5:08
that up
5:09
boy it's a beautiful
5:13
fish good fish an looking good
5:18
buddy there's something in the air or in
5:21
our case the water there's a strange
5:24
calm on the water There's Something
5:26
Brewing I've never experienced before
5:29
look at that that is
5:31
crazy
5:33
wow during spawning the males will
5:35
surround a single large female and bump
5:38
her up to the water surface once there
5:40
she releases her eggs and the males well
5:43
they do their
5:45
thing as the eggs are discharged and
5:47
Scattered the males release Milt turning
5:49
the water milky white look at this herd
5:51
of them coming in right here spawning
5:53
can last several days during spawning a
5:56
female can release between 1/2 to 3
5:58
million eggs
6:00
look at them all there holy smokes
6:02
unlike salmonoids strip bass will
6:04
continue to eat during the spawning
6:06
cycle fertilized strip bass eggs need to
6:08
be carried by water currents for about
6:10
48 to 72 hours until they hatch to avoid
6:14
Suffocation the water current must be
6:16
strong enough and the river distance
6:18
long enough to keep the eggs and the
6:20
Young from settling to the river bottom
6:23
if the eggs sink to the bottom they die
6:26
because sediment reduces oxygen exchange
6:28
between the egg in the surrounding water
6:31
this is the most critical period for
6:33
young stripers oh my God look at this
6:35
look at the size of that
6:37
oh oh mama just came with a school of
6:39
young look at that no it's the look at
6:42
them all around they all what oh my God
6:46
that is never seen anything like look at
6:47
that that is awesome how many there 50
6:50
100 oh 100 fish see the belly still not
6:53
not that big female that we're looking
6:54
for Wow boy that cool there had to be 50
6:58
to 100 fish crazy follow at one time
7:01
they bowled in one little group didn't
7:02
they they were somersault all over it
7:04
ridiculous got to be a female and then
7:06
they the males were just going or at
7:07
least they think it
7:10
is Hang on we're doubling and tripling
7:14
[Music]
7:17
here back at the warf at downtown Miri
7:20
the day starts early for the Striper Cup
7:22
organizers this is the first time that
7:24
the city of Marmi has ever hosted uh a
7:27
fishing tournament of any type let alone
7:29
a bass tournament we have a a striped
7:31
bass population that is unheard of in
7:34
the rest of the
7:35
world people are are are really uh
7:38
excited to to take part in this great
7:39
tournament we have literally hundreds
7:41
and hundreds of fishermen and boats out
7:43
on the River today this is a winning
7:45
team so you want to get the before shot
7:49
here while organizers prepare for the
7:52
big event Pete Joe and I have set off
7:54
back down to Mirchi in search of more of
7:56
these amazing creatures we barely
7:59
recovered from yesterday's incredible
8:01
display of Mother Nature at her best
8:03
what a fishing Adventure already and
8:05
we're just getting started Hang on we're
8:08
doubling and tripling
8:09
here look at them all underneath mine
8:12
Pete have you got something on I am not
8:13
oh my God I'm not rigged up oh can you
8:17
see
8:18
that oh that's nice that's fat hey
8:21
starting to get fat after what we just
8:24
witnessed it's clear that it's the males
8:26
aggressively going after every single
8:28
female on the river so now we'll try
8:30
everything we can to distract the males
8:32
and hopefully then lure the females out
8:34
of the
8:35
[Music]
8:40
Mayhem oh yeah that's a good one
8:45
Joe come on Joey you can do
8:48
it real chunky chunker
8:54
fish there you go nice one good job Joe
9:00
nice you got her Bud put her back nice B
9:05
oh nice release buddy good
9:11
work we're here on the Miri River in New
9:13
Brunswick throwing just about anything
9:15
and everything into the water and most
9:16
of it's working this fishery is
9:20
incredible look at them dirty air again
9:22
wow get yours in we'll have a a team a
9:25
tag team of them look at them oh look at
9:27
look at this oh crazy 42 fish beside
9:32
them oh my God that is nuts man they're
9:35
tough as Nails these things swimbaits
9:39
probably anything at work we're throwing
9:40
swimbaits now that's a nice little I
9:42
think when you get a school like that
9:43
that's hot I think you can throw
9:45
anything yeah yeah oh my God Joe's been
9:50
having some fun with us challenging our
9:51
claim off camera that he's been catching
9:53
the smallest fish and and I think his
9:55
record is safe for now that might have
9:57
you beat Joe oh Joe you're pretty much
10:00
Joe no no it's close Joe's got at least
10:03
a half a pound less than
10:07
that knock you off your feet look at
10:09
them all with
10:11
them let me see if I can get in there
10:13
after you see the little males trying to
10:15
Peck at this thing look at that that is
10:18
crazy you have to have a female on there
10:19
it has to be yeah oh man look at them
10:22
all holy
10:24
mackerel that's crazy you know which
10:27
ones are females anyways that we're
10:29
guessing is a female right there well
10:31
yeah only because everybody was on it
10:33
wow but it's skinny like it doesn't look
10:35
like a might be early maybe there
10:37
they're still not I don't know it's
10:38
weird don't know enough about I just saw
10:40
one he's waiting for you to release her
10:42
I just saw one come up in the surface
10:44
and bring her back here come on what are
10:45
you doing what are you doing with our
10:47
girls oh that's nuts during a rare Lull
10:51
in the incredible fishing action both
10:53
Pete and I grabbed another rod with our
10:55
secret weapon Mighty Mo sure enough our
10:59
our little Road Bel made a few new
11:00
friends just under the waves on the mirr
11:03
machine look at them following Mo man
11:09
crazy yeah baby on the botom whoops on
11:13
the bottom lip yeah Little Mo Fish
11:17
little striper bass on Mo a pink Mo of
11:19
all
11:20
things
11:22
beautiful look at he looks like a
11:24
drowned rat when he comes out of the
11:25
water and doesn't help these scrapers
11:28
are beating this not at
11:32
kidding I was I was ordered to throw out
11:35
a top water bait so I nice decided to
11:38
throw
11:39
a a mouse
11:41
bait that's a that's a duer for a for a
11:44
mouse fish
11:46
yeah you want me to get them or you good
11:49
I might be able to get them here here
11:51
let me get them for you
11:54
whoa nicely
11:57
done oh buddy
12:01
Mighty Bo comes to the rescue there you
12:02
go brother he's yours that's a mouse B
12:05

12:10
stick nice Beauty a mouse paint that
12:15
that soccer castes him doesn't it I'm
12:16
telling you that thing is crazy that
12:19
thing is crazy pink pink
12:27
pink
12:30
oh that was a nice one that sounded good
12:32
eh you get a look at him Pete no I just
12:34
I saw his tail only buddy couldn't tell
12:36
look at the males around there oh my God
12:39
you're going to make me hurt my thumb
12:40
again aren't you that could be a keeper
12:42
that's too
12:43
big good fish
12:46
Joey just keep wearing her out so it
12:49
doesn't bust my thumb
12:54
buddy can you hold them they hurt man
12:56
when they they just grab they're so hard
12:58
to to get a hold of them cuz they're
12:59
just a bit mouth is a bit bigger than a
13:01
large
13:02
mouth that's a beauty Joe that's an
13:06
awesome fish buddy think an holy
13:09
mackerel did you catch that oh by
13:15
myself but I had the I had my rigging
13:18
buddy he put her together yeah boy okay
13:21
awesome get it back in the water go
13:23
forth and
13:24
multiply that's what she's
13:27
doing this is it after a short delay the
13:30
Striper Cup is ready to launch it seems
13:33
the whole town has come out to cheer the
13:35
participants
13:37
on no matter the level of skill
13:40
equipment on hand or the size of the
13:42
boat everybody's welcome on the maram
13:44
machine if we could achieve anything at
13:46
this event it would be to bring
13:48
attention to the fishery and get people
13:50
to come to the mar Machi in May and
13:52
enjoy this
13:54
fishery talk about a great fishery this
13:57
is fantastic I wish we had something
13:59
like this a little closer to home I'd be
14:00
on it every
14:04
day striper King today my friend it's
14:07
probably one of the most humbling
14:09
experiences to dream up something like
14:11
this with our buddy Jeff Wilson and put
14:14
it into effect and then see the results
14:16
of how many people really really wanted
14:18
this uh to happen another benefit of
14:21
having this event is the great
14:23
opportunity it provides for the Miri
14:24
River environmental assessment committee
14:27
and the DFO to collect d
14:29
this 10 km stretcher river is the only
14:32
spawning ground for stripe bass in the
14:34
Gulf of St Lawrence is this careful and
14:36
intelligent management of striper
14:38
fishery that has allowed the spectacular
14:40
event to even
14:42
happen you know these guys from fish in
14:45
Canada I'm thinking are pretty uh pretty
14:47
happy with what they've done um and I
14:49
think they caught some nice fish and
14:51
certainly have seen a lot of
14:53
fish well that my friend would be an
14:55
understatement what the event organizers
14:57
didn't know is that earlier we were
15:00
experiencing absolute Mayhem on the Bei
15:04
in fact had we weighed in our top two
15:06
fish each day we' have won this
15:08
tournament hands down well then maybe
15:10
next year we should be players and not
15:12
Spectators what you think there Pete W
15:17
buddy and nice one buddy and you got it
15:20
all by yourself you lifted it in and

15:30
today's Hotpot is a stretch of the merhi
15:32
river named Red Bank the way point on
15:34
your screen will get you there during
15:36
the strip bass spawning migration each
15:38
spring this area gets completely jammed
15:40
up with rambunctious fish getting ready
15:41
to reproduce a fast erratic moving bait
15:44
like a Yamamoto dhad soft jerk bait in a
15:46
bright color will pretty much clean up
15:48
here for more hotpots like this one
15:50
check out fishing
15:55
[Music]
15:57
canada.com what the holy ma that's a
16:00
nice fish boys that's two big females
16:03
together or another big male right
16:05
beside her whatever the case is that is
16:07
both big
16:09
fish maybe I could grab the other one by
16:11
hand oh boy good luck on that one buddy
16:15
oh that's nice wow that's perfect
16:21
e there he
16:27
is ohow that feels
16:29
heavy oh yeah that might be that might
16:32
be the ticket it's hard to tell though
16:34
oh you got current you got win that's a
16:36
nice tail look at the cluster with
16:39
her woo nicely done that's the one that
16:43
is the one here you go wow nice
16:48
fish that's Mama right there young mama
16:52
had about I don't know 30 or 40 small
16:55
males that were just glued to her
16:56
they're still hanging around Wai still h
16:58
wait put her
16:59
back that's awesome that's great man
17:04
crazy it's great man talk about a great
17:07
Fisher this is fantastic I wish we had
17:10
something like this a little closer to
17:11
home I be H every
17:21
[Music]
17:23
day to get to today's fast-paced strip
17:26
bass fishing we flew from Toronto to to
17:28
monton New Brunswick we then took
17:30
Highway 15 Northeast and then turned
17:33
North on Highway 11 we exited on Church
17:36
Street in the town of mirami and then
17:38
took Henderson Street to the outstanding
17:41
accommodations at the rod Mirchi
17:44
[Music]
17:54
Resort this was one of the most amazing
17:56
shoots we've ever done so choosing just
17:59
one klp was tough because of where we
18:02
were and what we saw it's got to be k
18:05
for knowledge and L for location aside
18:08
from Fantastic memories of what we
18:10
witness on the surface of that River we
18:13
learned that these fish in the midst of
18:14
their reproductive frenzy actually took
18:17
time out to eat most fish species
18:19
certainly the salmonoids from which this
18:21
river is internationally known don't eat
18:24
when they're about to spawn stripers on
18:26
the other hand are multitaskers doing
18:28
both with equal abandon and the numbers
18:31
are staggering over A4 million spawning
18:34
fish in a 10 km stretch of this river
18:37
right in front of the city of Mir
18:39
machine this very convenient location
18:42
along with the knowledge that these fish
18:43
actually eat while they spawn makes for
18:46
a very successful day under water and
18:48
that's what KP is all about to make it
18:51
even better we Anglers should do our
18:53
part and release them all and let them
18:55
get right back at it it just means an
18:57
even more spectacular ular fishery next
19:00
year the fishing Canada show brought to
