(Episode 459)
For this episode, Pete Bowman travels up to the Killarney area of Georgian Bay looking for big fall Northern Pike. He gets his big Pike but in the process “lucks” into a mess of feeding Smallmouth Bass and then ends up with a big ol’ Muskie as well.

1:04
let me tell you something my fine
1:05
fishing friends when I get something in
1:07
my head in this great sport I often get
1:09
obsessed with it for instance this
1:12
season I have yet to catch a big
1:13
northern pike and well that just ain't
1:18
right on a previous trip I had my bot
1:20
handed to me by the pike Gods at
1:22
Pinehurst Lake in Alberta right species
1:24
but wrong size yeah exactly despite the
1:26
number of huge Walley I caught so I'm
1:30
pretty much itching to get a hold of a
1:31
big Pike some big Pike
1:35
anything this week I'm going to attempt
1:37
it here in Karne Ontario and all I can
1:40
say is please somebody give me a
1:43
break now if you enjoy the outdoors you
1:46
really should come here this area boasts
1:49
some of the most pristine unspoiled
1:51
scenery in the world with its wild
1:53
Georgia Bay Landscapes and white
1:54
quartsite ridges along the beautiful
1:56
Lush
1:57
mountains I've been fishing most of my
1:59
my life but I am still awed by the
2:01
vastness and beauty of this country the
2:04
fishing is just a reward for being here
2:07
it's simply
2:09
spectacular I arrive at beautiful Karne
2:11
Mountain Lodge drop the Princecraft into
2:13
the water look at the time and see it's
2:15
just after 2: p.m. and it's a perfect
2:17
early fall afternoon there's no way I
2:20
can sit around till tomorrow Karne Bay
2:22
is right around the corner to the West
2:24
so I'm going Pike hunting right now
2:29
[Music]
2:32
I'm fishing the back of Karne Bay where
2:34
local fishing guide red PR suggested I
2:35
start he and a couple of buddies caught
2:38
some nice Pike in this area the weekend
2:50
before fishing can be very humbling as
2:54
well as red and the boys did just a few
2:55
days prior to my trip I couldn't get
2:57
squat
3:00
the next logical step according to the
3:01
book is to work my way out to deeper
3:04
water as I get close to the mouth of
3:06
Karne Bay I'm getting pretty revved up
3:09
with all the bait fish I'm seeing on my
3:10
bow mounted garment it's the perfect
3:12
scenario for Big Fish Classic late
3:15
season structure covered with bait and
3:17
deep water access directly adjacent the
3:20
only guessing game is presenting the
3:22
right lure got one bit of loosen the
3:24
drag up that feels
3:25
solid oh that's big I'll bet it's a
3:29
Musky
3:30
but if it's a pike I'm hoping it's a
3:31
pike because he coming in real easy
3:34
now what is this what are
3:37
you what she going to go now there it is
3:41
look at that a nice one it's a nice Pike
3:43
beautiful Pike let's see this going be
3:47
quite the net job for me folks cuz I'm
3:49
buying my
3:50
lome get my net wet come on big
3:54
dude look at the size of this pipe
3:59
nice fish okay big
4:05
girl look at
4:08
that look at that
4:13
bike wow what an awesome
4:17
fish wow look at that that is way up
4:22
Northern Ontario class Pike in basically
4:25
Southern Ontario or Central Southern
4:27
Ontario whoa big dog
4:30
here we go
4:33
mama here we go mama I get it by the
4:37
tail come on
4:39
[Laughter]
4:42
[Music]
4:45
yes well that didn't take long and I've
4:48
still got another full day to fish
4:51
[Music]
4:56
sweet you know what take a bunch of
5:00
those in the pike aren't
5:03
WR it's day two of my Karne trip and
5:06
from what I saw yesterday afternoon even
5:08
though I caught a giant northern pike
5:10
things just don't seem right there was
5:12
hardly any Pike activity in the long
5:14
stretch of water I fished in colar Bay I
5:17
should have caught or saw more fish so
5:19
much Open Water not much the shallow
5:22
Back Bay stuff lots of rock it just
5:25
seems so big fish
5:28
oriented I'm going to travel East out of
5:30
Karne and head to mil Lake this is a
5:32
very protected piece of water when
5:34
compared to georan Bay there's lots of
5:35
Pikes throughout the entire area and the
5:37
boat right up Collins Inlet is
5:40
[Music]
5:42
spectacular mil Lake as well as
5:44
beaverstone Bay to its immediate East
5:46
are only accessible by boat however
5:49
since the ride is a bit long this water
5:51
is relatively Untouched by
5:53
Anglers add to that the fact that there
5:55
are no boat launches here make it a real
5:58
Hidden Gem I'm going to push my way to
6:01
where mil Lake and beaverstone Bay
6:02
connect to Georgian Bay and work my way
6:05
back I fished this kind of structure
6:07
before just to the sou of here near
6:08
point of barrel with pretty good
6:11
success this combination of wave warn
6:13
islands and turquoise water almost looks
6:15
like it's from a national Geo episode
6:18
Eerie yet
6:20
mesmerizing see what we got see what we
6:22
got here doesn't feel like much but
6:25
that's okay it's a start on a cold day
6:28
like this I'll take him
6:30
looks like a little Pike maybe yeah
6:33
little
6:35
although this kind of structure
6:38
and cover doesn't look very finding
6:40
weeds among the Myriad of rocks and
6:42
channels is the
6:43
key ah you know just start the right
6:46
species one of the right species I mean
6:49
I want Pike here pike fishing I'll take
6:51
anything and I mean I'd love to get a
6:53
Musky too throwing the smaller baits is
6:56
probably not going to get me too many
6:59
mus but you'll never know in a day like
7:00
today this is a Northeast wind I'm kind
7:03
of cross fisted here but I'll try and
7:05
show you the fish like that backwards
7:07
little Pike but solid see how thick that
7:09
is through the back solid
7:11
fish yeah so right color now I just got
7:15
to get them a lot bigger but that's fun
7:17
it's it's a warm-up fish for sure you
7:20
going to take out bud I hit this area
7:22
pretty well but could only come up with
7:23
one half decent Northern so it's time to
7:26
move
7:28
on I always bring extra gear when
7:30
fishing areas like Karne where more than
7:32
one game fish species is available you
7:34
never know I just so happen to be
7:36
trolling for pike covering lots of water
7:39
when a gorgeous smallo bass grabbed my
7:41
big Pike offering but instantly got off
7:44
not to give up an opportunity let's just
7:47
check this spot a little further there's
7:49
a fish nice nice look at
7:56
you look at that that's awesome hey you
8:00
know what I take a bunch of those when
8:03
the pike aren't going an interesting
8:05
scenario is happening right here right
8:06
now I can catch these extremely active
8:09
and feeding smalles on Drop shots tubes
8:11
or even flipping jigs on almost every
8:13
cast in less than 6 ft of water you know
8:16
you come in here and you get a bump you
8:17
don't know what it is a small fish throw
8:19
a tube and and take your chances I
8:21
always take a bit of time to experiment
8:23
but never stop doing what's
8:27
working I'm fishing the colar area of
8:29
Ontario and so far it's been good nearby
8:33
Karne Provincial Park boast some of the
8:35
most stunning scenery in the province
8:37
this beautiful area offers Backcountry
8:39
canoeing kaying and Hiking as well as
8:42
CrossCountry skiing and snowshoeing in
8:44
the
8:45
winter as far as fishing in colar park
8:47
is concerned many of the lakes are fish
8:49
sanctuaries however limited fishing
8:51
opportunities are available in the Parks
8:53
Eastern and Northern sections Bell and
8:56
balam lakes are popular to fish and easy
8:58
to access via Blue Mountain Lodge just
9:01
be sure you contact the park to check
9:02
for fishing
9:07
regulations drop shot in a Shad shape
9:10
worm so I'm sitting here taking a break
9:12
from the pike because it felt very Bassy
9:15
I knew oh that's a good fish of course I
9:18
got my giant uh Pike net
9:21
here so I think I'll be hand land on
9:24
this dude I threw in there way up on the
9:27
rocks and uh and had a tap nothing and I
9:31
lost my my Shad shaped worm so I changed
9:33
it back this guy ate it oh this is a
9:36
good
9:37
one look at that for a
9:39
smallo nicely done bottom lip just
9:43
barely
9:46
hooked those days just going to get
9:48
better and better I think look at that
9:50
chunky stocky fish what'll happen to
9:52
further north you get here here's
9:54
something I'll show you when you're in
9:56
musky and Pike water a lot of times they
9:59
get that on them that I guarantee you
10:01
what that is that's an ESO somehow
10:03
grabbed him Pike or a Musky and he's
10:06
just uh living the dream by not being in
10:09
that one's gut right now maybe as a
10:11
younger fish nice awesome okay I might
10:15
to set up and have some fun here I may
10:17
just have some
10:23
fun okay all you threw my worm that's it
10:27
you are in trouble now buddy good fish
10:29
no that's a good one but but I'll tell
10:30
you what if I ever got a a five on
10:34
here got you that's a nice mama oh easy
10:41
easy that's a good looking smallo bass
10:43
right there folks and I'll tell you what
10:45
that thing fought like a demon this is
10:48
awesome yeah
10:51
[Music]
10:56
buddy that felt awesome
10:58
[Music]
11:00
you just have no idea if you've never
11:02
fished a jiging pig with heavy braid and
11:04
a heavy Rod how much fun set in the hook
11:07
on something like that as you saw I
11:09
almost broke my arm doing it it's a
11:13
pretty good fish I mean it's not a giant
11:14
but it's pretty darn good fish and I
11:16
mean who ever thought you'd be whoa
11:19
catching them on and
11:20
pig in 49 degree water temperature off
11:25
of one rock
11:33
oh God get in there I got her someh I
11:36
got that fish than that I have no idea
11:41
[Music]
11:45
how all righty then now maybe I can get
11:49
back to the pike that I came here for
11:52
oh oh
11:56
God he slapped at a
11:59
damn the musky freaking musky and he bit
12:03
my lure but he he missed it I will not
12:07
get a better chance than that for a
12:09
bonus musky while I'm pike fishing I
12:11
literally felt that fish hit the bait
12:13
and it still didn't get hooked up I now
12:16
know there's some monsters
12:25
here today's Hotpot is a great area for
12:28
musky and Northern Pike the Waypoint on
12:30
your screen will get you there this is a
12:32
classic example of a brake line on the
12:34
deep edge of a big shallow wedy bay game
12:37
fish will Traverse from Edward to
12:39
chicken Island all while searching for
12:40
food I cast to this area however
12:43
trolling would be just as effective if
12:45
you're looking for a giant fish then use
12:47
the biggest bait you have if however
12:49
you're looking to just get bit downsize
12:51
to something considered small for Pike
12:53
and musky for more hotpots like this one
12:55
check out fishing canada.com
13:02
[Music]
13:04
rain cold
13:07
rain oh these are
13:13
fish I got one there's a surprise right
13:19
there it's heavy but I think it's full
13:21
of weeds crushed me and then went
13:23
straight
13:24
down unless it's all weed I lot of fish
13:28
which make me look like a fool but it's
13:30
happened to me
13:36
before oh
13:41
yeah it feels like a big old log is what
13:44
it feels
13:45
like now it's going back again look at
13:51
that what have I got a biker musk there
13:53
he is what is it a biker or musky musky
13:57
it looks like a Musky to me I got a good
13:59
glimpse of it nice there's a bonus fish
14:02
for me oh that's
14:04
awesome look at that fish gorgeous mus
14:08
oh yeah wa easy
14:11
[Laughter]
14:13
Mama God luck and musy there he is again

14:27

14:29
somehow I got that fish in the net and I
14:31
have no idea how good Muskie this is a
14:35
good one like I'm talking about a nice
14:38
solid ESO
14:40
maskani there's a beefy GE of B muski
14:45
bonus fish holy smokes what a bonus fish
14:52
oh that's
14:53
[Music]
14:55

14:57
follow don't know if it's the same fish

15:04
[Music]
15:11
beaut let's see if I can get that fish
15:15
revived big mama okay that's a nice musy
15:20
man that is one heck of a
15:22
[Music]
15:26
Musky one heck of a Musky
15:29
thing I like about this fish right now
15:30
is it's sitting upright it's not turning
15:34
on the side I love that oh man this is a
15:39
big musky
15:42
folks There She Goes not right there is
15:45
the fishable
15:49
lifetime Kar I love
15:52
youo there you have it fishing Canada
15:55
fans I set out on this adventure seeking
15:57
northern pike and I eded in Catching my
15:59
biggest one of the season and as a bonus
16:02
stumbled under the craziest small Mo
16:04
fishing of the year plus put a gorgeous
16:07
musky in the boat to cap it all
16:10
off I'd say the great fishing that colar
16:13
Ontario has been hiding so well just got
16:15
let out of the
16:17
[Music]
16:21
bag to get to today's awesome
16:24
multispecies fishing I first took
16:25
Highway 400 North to Highway 69 I next
16:28
turned turn left on 637 then finally
16:31
turn left on commissioner Street ending
16:32
up at Karne Mountain Lodge this great
16:35
facility caters not only to Anglers but
16:37
to boers of all types hikers
16:39
CrossCountry skiers snowmobilers and
16:42
pretty much anything else involving the
16:46
[Music]
16:53
outdoors today's GP is L for location
16:56
I'm fishing out of Karne on Georgia Bay
16:58
Georgia Bay is a huge body of water
17:00
could be intimidating to people but I'll
17:02
tell you what it's got a lot of good
17:03
fishing in the tucked away areas as well
17:06
you got Karne Bay you've got the channel
17:08
of kar then you go down you start going
17:09
South you go to the French River you go
17:11
to the pcro river you go to the Moon
17:13
River you go as far down as point a
17:15
barrel all that is protected water you
17:17
have Pike musky large mouth small mouth
17:20
lots of panish and in the big water you
17:22
got lake trout salmon rainbow trout this
17:24
is a really really good
17:26
location the fish in Canada show brought
17:29
to you in part by Ram trucks nothing
17:33
works harder than a ram Sterns trusted
17:36
