how's that working now well I was very confused therefore it's anybody's here
0:58
if the audience is hearing a little bit free is we both stupid and I went way
1:04
off track I just AJ Johnson jr. moments they're so remote
1:09
things hopefully we're on I don't know I was I don't right now if you go over to
1:14
the public chat Lucia people see I goers there Igor's there right now so I guess
1:24
what I would say at feet in the background there is that you know based on what I'm hearing now and what was
1:31
said yesterday it looks like we may be grounded till August or September you
1:37
know we should go to series I don't know I don't know we're gonna do there to be honest with you maybe we'll go down to
1:44
Georgia because they talk about Georgia is starting to open up everything now like I heard that yesterday or this morning to like it's you know what Ted
1:52
putnams place in the US and shoot down there and they they're gonna be free before we are by sounds of it we can do
1:58
half the season down there and then when he opens up north we'll go up there total tell Ted a year so many ways
2:05
everybody we kind of picked us up midstream we were talking about about
2:11
what we're gonna do next year for the Fisher canada show based on the fact that we might not be able to even do any
2:18
traveling until well into august fire sounds a bit so that's pretty so what
2:26
are we doing today Mr Bowen you got problem well yeah I got under control I think what we're gonna do and we've got
2:32
to make a format for this right this is all new to us as much as it is for everybody else so I think what we need to do on every one of these if we do
2:39
them Tuesdays and Fridays we take the questions that were not answered from
2:45
the previous post or host or whatever you call this and then we answer those questions and then move on to the
2:51
subject so in this case we have them there bunch of questions from last week's show and then we'll delve into
2:57
those we have some questions that are to fishing Canada will knock into those two and at the end of it all I was
3:03
thinking we should go to the relation in Pike article we did and then we can talk a little bit about that for the five
3:09
baits suggested by obviously me right Angelo how about the fact that we also
3:23
were supposed to name this segment and we're gonna ask folks to pitch in yeah
3:30
and you can even do the heavy lifting and come up with a name for the segment we've got a few ideas but we'd like to
3:36
hear from you we have to give it a name we have to title this thing the audience
3:41
the name before us you know not none because he will he'll put something he'll slag us in somewhere for sure I
3:49
mean it's gonna have to be something good versus evil hey Willie machetes in
3:55
there eh well are you doing buddy handlebars fishing muskie boys they're nice also I'm getting a lot of buddies
4:03
of mine who who heard about last week's show and they said they couldn't find us they couldn't get on so if we need to
4:09
make any announcements as to whether how people can get this podcast that we
4:15
should be doing it now and or put it up on the screen or something how do people
4:20
connect with this show obviously there's a bunch of already there that don't need
4:26
that information but apparently there was a bunch last week that could make a non self yeah yeah now maybe even he's
4:32
running the helm behind us here right now maybe he can take something in there but they won't be on anyway I don't know
4:38
how we do it fishing canva.com slash live that's it that's all they need to know right come
4:48
on is that a bad behind you yeah that's
4:53
where I'd sleep alright anyways bye for
5:01
now okay we're saying fishing gander calm / lie but we're saying the people they're already here that's no good to them we
5:08
have to get it to somebody that can get on so you tell your friends people that are listening that's why watching and in the chat
5:14
share it on social media efficient Canada comm / live shared on Facebook groups do your thing it's a cool cool
5:20
experience every step every Tuesday yeah Tuesday and Friday are you supposed to
5:26
be a tech type guy huh keep your image is so terrible because you're seeing it the fans don't see it's something
5:32
different it's the fans don't see what you're seeing Oh exactly yeah doubles from last time
5:47
and I think we should we got a list made up here and we got I would say let's
5:56
start from the top the one from Kathy Walters it's a pretty basic question but I don't think Kathy
6:03
watches his a whole lot because go ahead or she could be from Saskatchewan and is
6:09
very curious right Canton wants to know I have we ever been fishing in
6:14
Saskatchewan Thank You Stephen I love you brother to answer that I guess over the last
6:22
30-some odd years I would say we've been there I'm gonna go out and live now and say we've been there anywhere - I don't
6:30
know 15 times 20 times so yes the answer the answer is a resounding absolutely n
6:37
and not only just for what you would normally associate Saskatchewan for Pete
6:43
to show there a large both that was awesome boundary dam reservoir
6:50
and it was near the town of Estevan and what a great what a great show that was we've been the Selwyn Lake Tobin Lake
6:57
boundary dam last Mountain Lake I think there's a reason there a Wollaston Lake
7:03
up there two inch in the west corner yeah so we've been opened yeah yeah
7:12
we've been there bunch of times so yeah it's an unbelievable fishing province for sure you know if there's a knock if
7:19
there's anything wrong with it at all and I'm not suggesting that there is but if there is a weak link maybe not enough
7:26
structure getting from point A to point B is sometimes very difficult in terms of aligning your means of transport but
7:34
other than that it's an incredible fishery for sure from north to south you
7:40
know there's a lot of it which means the staff I saw okay next one is from Elaine Duke and it says if I was looking into a
7:50
fly-in fishing camp in Ontario Nick wink-wink nudge-nudge what would you
7:57
recommend for someone who's maybe on a budget oops sorry I'll take back that we managed but it's still looking for that
8:06
full experience that's a million-dollar question you know the budget clean is
8:13
kind of interesting because from my experience budgets are relative to the
8:19
person who is establishing them what I might think is a low budget might not be necessarily your idea of a low budget so
8:26
it's pretty difficult for us to sort of give you a general answer on that but there are some some economy trips
8:32
available there's lots of economy trips and there's lots of premium trips if
8:37
you're looking for premium let me throw the premiums up first you you've got a hot lake obviously that we've talked
8:43
about on our programs for a while now you've got Lodge 88 which is another
8:49
great premium trip there's probably in my opinion in Ontario it's probably a
8:55
dozen absolutely stellar Premium trips that one could take and then below that
9:02
there's probably several hundred economy
9:08
trips because the rest to me are all economy if you're not at the premium level you're all economy and there's a
9:14
ton of those what species would you be looking forward being probably the most important question to ask and because you didn't tell us that it's going to be
9:20
pretty hard to to really pinpoint it you're just saying you're looking for a flying and fishing cap and I'm Tara Pete
9:26
where you got a nut I would I mean I think the normal species then on a fly
9:32
in camp and be walleye and pike as a rule like walleye is the number one in the province why could be right there
9:38
because it's usually in the same way you know like a Gita's KB cabins you
9:44
know that's a great place you bring your own food in and and going those timber timber wolf Lots I love those those guys
9:51
are like absolutely awesome these are on small lake well kb cabins don't ya give
9:57
me a room the hell not name of that lake is huge but it's got timber wolf got a
10:03
great little lake if there's only two lodges on the whole lake very perfectly priced in that mid level and fishing is
10:11
outstanding so those are a couple right there and then I mean go fishing Ontario is a great site you can learn in there and and type in what you want type in
10:17
your budget and you will find a logical species you want because then it's like I said we've gone into hasty Lake and
10:24
that's a fly-in Bass Lake so as where as that is you know if that's what you want there's a lot of different species of
10:30
Marten River Lodge comes to mind I mean there are a ton of them hey listen why
10:36
just go to fishing can be calm and and check out the archives because we've shot programs and pretty much everything
10:42
every significant operation in this province for sure you can actually see
10:48
the experience first and then make a decision based on that yeah absolutely
10:53
that's what Mark Burton any tips for maintenance and cleaning fishing tackle
10:59
well excuse me mm-hmm I'll defer that one to you mr. Bowman
11:06
you know what I say maintenance on your reels here's a good one for you
11:13
whenever let's say in the fall when you're done for the year or you don't
11:19
fish a whole lot loosen your drag right off on your reels bait casting and spinning reels loosen that drag off so
11:27
it's not tight tight and bound down because because there's a washer system in there and you do not want to compress
11:33
those washers that they don't need to be your Greg you'll work a lot better so you loosen them very great offer 3/4 of the way off
11:39
I think that's a great tip that we always do like I mean if we're gonna put these rise muskie rise to go for once or
11:44
twice you know for us we don't do a lot so once or twice in a season we'll turn them back to the reels right off again
11:50
look at the drags for or you don't want to really nowadays
11:56
the debate casters and spinning reels you really don't want to take them apart too much because there's so many intricate parts inside if you do just
12:03
take the caps off and put a little bit of real oil in there I'm going buy some real oil or a company like that they
12:10
make they make great products you can just dip a dab of oil right you don't
12:15
really need to grease a whole lot in there anymore nowadays I mean ultimately you will but then you should probably send it in for servicing and keep them
12:23
clean you know what if you want to clean grime off we use five part water one
12:29
part vinegar something like that on a rag clean stuff off of that and that's
12:34
basically if you keep stuff clean a little bit oiled loosen that and drag off that's basically all we do I I
12:40
discovered something last year that it's pretty phenomenal for it's not really
12:45
maintenance it's more preventative because I don't know what you're like at the end of the year the last thing I
12:51
want to do is start going through all the tackle boxes and dumping them out and cleaning everything off like we
12:56
should be especially to dry things out so generally what happens with me I open up my tackle box in the spring and yeah
13:03
there's a lot of rust in there I pulled it to this great product actually two
13:08
years ago I found it in Europe of all places by a company that's American
13:14
called wood stream and they have this new product out called I think it's a Pete helped me on this one is at Z rust
13:20
I think so I think I have one set so there's a product called zero so this
13:26
blue plastic looking stuff and it comes in different shapes and sizes and you
13:32
put it in your tackle boxes they even have that then you've got one right there yeah it's ze rust it's called this stuff
13:38
is nothing short of a miracle so you put that in your tackle box you tape it onto
13:45
the inside lid of your tackle box and it dries up all the moisture and you come
13:51
back in this friggin open your boxes and there's no rust like it's a miracle if they haven't unique fresh air it is
13:58
great and they also have the little dividers that you can divide your actual tackle box with little plastic inserts
14:04
you take out the clear ones that come with the box and you put these blue ones in and i'm tanja it's it's the best
14:10
preventative you know pre maintenance product that you can get and they all take a little block to they make a
14:16
little smaller when they can go into a compartment of this process and you know the one i just showed you so really good
14:22
really great idea and it works pretty cool Sean Richard wants to know he says I
14:30
have a question for you guys when are you gonna resurrect barclays the greatest Fisher score on earth that's
14:37
awesome I have some fond memories of that baby I'll tell you but that that
14:44
one is long gone that was a retail store for those of you who aren't aware of it we had a retail
14:50
store for about 25 years and this was pre pre everything Walmart was not in
14:57
Canada Canadian Tire wasn't really in the fishing game and there was there was
15:03
a handful of retailers that were taking fishing seriously and Barclays was one
15:09
of them as a it was the first of the super stores for the outdoors so it was
15:15
pretty cool met a lot of people there have a lot of fond memories like I say but I'm kind of
15:21
glad we're not in that game anymore with it was time to get to know for sure but thanks for bringing that up and giving
15:28
us some great memories got on the right side of everybody's looking at the comments yeah I'm one guy adds Minute
15:34
Rice to his tackle yes packs silica gel so we're getting
15:41
lots of good advice when they're to that that rice actually it's some good idea do you take electronic devices and put
15:46
it in there and dry rice it'll it'll take the moisture out so I didn't never tried it on my tackle box but it's a
15:52
good idea yeah it works with everything else yeah right yeah next question Stephen
16:00
Neil Curtis if you were fishing a large body of water Oak Lake Manitoba that is
16:09
only seven to eight feet deep max with Sandy featureless bottom what would be
16:15
your go-to tactics and why the lake has tons of walleye and foot
16:21
sighs perch and pike there you go what's
16:27
that no that's a bull you know what that reminds me of Ange the portion of Max
16:34
Hamish League that we fish the big standing point no weeds whatsoever all
16:40
saying now it goes out deeper than that and the deep areas but that said if you
16:45
compare his leg to that you know what what a really good tactic good Angela
16:50
and Nick came up with the first trip out there was longline trolling floating
16:56
minnow baits so it's only you know seven feet of water that's almost exactly what we're fishing now controlling floating
17:05
minnow baby doesn't get down very deep obviously but in a slow pace and that two horsepower Merc and and it worked
17:11
really well right oh and I think that this the key there is as most of you
17:16
know and as Pete knows I'm I'm big on vertical fishing right give me a drop shot rig and a shad shaped worm and and
17:24
and put me in the corner and I'll be there for weeks come back and I'm still there but and and and and for the most
17:31
part it's my first go to bait that I'll use on just about any lake for any species of fish well in this particular
17:37
situation on this lake that Pete just mentioned I did that for about two hours
17:44
and had very limited success and then we
17:53
started just casting out these little oh well you know 4-inch stick baits and
18:00
stuff throwing them out minnow baits trying to figure out what was going on and at one point inadvertently I put the
18:07
I wanted to move to a different location and I put the boat in gear and we
18:12
weren't moving for two seconds and we caught a fish and so it started
18:19
developing into a pattern that all of a sudden we just found out every time we stopped in the no action as soon as
18:25
you're in forward motion you're getting fish and that key there I think was clear shallow featureless
18:33
bottom water and it sounds like that's what you've got so my answer to you would be would be long line trolling
18:41
small baits floating baits but but yeah I think you'll find that be very
18:47
successful you know the the vertical presentation is great when you when you've got crystal-clear water and only
18:53
seven eight feet below the boat chances are pretty good that that you're gonna spook most of the fish in close
18:59
proximity so that's where that long-distance trolling comes in now I'm going to give you a couple more that
19:04
I've done on a few legs very few even a one on that sandwich one is taking a
19:11
five inch for five and swimbait yeah are you can use a curly kale or something
19:16
like that but on a jig head and long bombing casts away out there even if I
19:22
did this when Angela's trolling the minnow bait I quarter the boat I'd cast it away out there let it drop down and
19:28
pop into the sand so you can go like a half ounce head let it hit the sand and then just work it back like a jig even
19:35
though it's a swim bait it's one of the rare times they run swimming like a jig rod lift it up and then pop back in the sand up that a pup back into the sand
19:42
and that can really trigger walleyes and plague to you know depending what you
19:48
want to get want to get while eyes do that or if it's seven or eight feet as you say take a ten foot deep diving
19:56
crankbait so in a walleye shape or even a bass style frankly and this is
20:02
forecasting mostly you cast it out again long bomb task and rip it down as hard as you can you know just fast you can
20:07
dig into the sand and then slow it down and when that thing is going along like this and digging into the sand every now
20:13
and then leaves up a puff of dirt toughest animal and that can catch a lot of walleye depending on their activity
20:19
level fish so those are two tactics and I want to try swim bass with a jig head and ten foot or a deeper crank big on
20:25
the bottom and dig it in there sounds good
20:31
of course we've got all kinds of different things - if you had efficient CARICOM and go on to our even what's our
20:40
segment with that we have we have a button there on the site that people can go in and how to's
20:47
right we ought maybe not you can get lot more in-depth information they're so sweet our YouTube channel to get lots of
20:54
stuff on there too so yeah mark camp wants to know do I have to
21:01
register a canoe with a trolling motor and a five horsepower outboard yeah the
21:06
answer no you do not have to register a canoe in this country as far as I know
21:13
and I was at one point a very significant retailer of canoes and back
21:19
then no you didn't have to so the rule the rule of thumb as well I think get me
21:25
wrong maybe I'm wrong on this one is that anything ten horsepower or up as Boat wise needs to be registered and
21:33
that's why they make nine nines that's why that number nine point nine came in so you don't have to register that little 1440 with a 99 on it so a five
21:40
horsepower gave well under that and the canoe thing so I don't think you'd have to register it well it's are you sure
21:46
about that there used to be that the nine point nine is that that's why they made that okay but a boat is not
21:52
registered as a nine point nine like when you go register bow the hornet
21:59
power doesn't enter into it oh I believe it I think I'm buying boat without a
22:07
motor on it right are you buy a 20-foot boat with no motor on it and you can if you've got a 20 foot bass
22:13
boat and you start paddling it around you don't have to register it I want you paddle on a boat pal I don't know you
22:22
know we're probably the wrong people that to ask is what happens with us all right comes in and somebody else does
22:28
all the registering it they just point us in the right direction if we won't get on the boat off and go so sorry
22:35
about that one or somebody can say it in the comments if somebody knows the legalities of it by the way all of these
22:44
new questions that you're asking now that we see them up on the listing here we'll get at them either later or for
22:52
next week's show sound like we're ignoring you because there's a lot of great questions there but we do have to
22:57
adhere to this list for so that you know whatever happened to
23:02
the mouse lure Steve McAllister thank
23:08
you for that one Steve appreciate it we've only answered that one about a million times over the last ten or so
23:16
years it's it's taken so many different turns and and twists and right now at
23:24
this very moment it's sitting in limbo obviously the pandemic kind of put a
23:30
stop to anything that was coming along in terms of development we will resurrect it when the time is
23:37
appropriate just so that we have a perfectly clear the the most difficult part of that date was first of all the
23:47
the cupping of the ears was a real difficult thing to get a patent for and we worked and worked in getting that but
23:54
but that was not the biggest problem biggest problem it was the Fleur we used real fur on that bait and it had to be a
24:03
hand process cutting the the fur and adhering it to the body of the bait he
24:08
could not be automated several companies tried in the Orient to do it and everything that came back we rejected we
24:17
just could not get the quality levels through an automated process of putting on this real fur if it was artificial
24:24
fur it was fine but the problem with artificial fur is it didn't fish very well so we didn't want to sacrifice the
24:31
fish ability of the bait because the key to this bait is that it truly is magic it catches fish bottom line there's very
24:39
few bass I've never fished the top water bait in my life and I am big on top
24:44
water fishing I've never fished the top water bait my life like this thing but we couldn't get it manufactured to work
24:53
properly we couldn't get it manufactured with natural fur and still have the
25:00
quality control and the ability to produce mass quantities at an affordable
25:05
price we could if it was going to be a 25 or 35 or even a $40 door but
25:11
I dream our vision of this bait when we first put it together was to come up with a lure that we could you know have
25:17
everybody by you know I tan the $12 lure that everybody could afford and so we
25:23
really stuck to our principles and and that's why it's not on the market yet obviously we're not in the lure
25:30
production business but one day I wouldn't count it out it's not a dead
25:36
issue yet so thanks for that so we're obviously thinking of the consumer on
25:41
that one ligand said if we can get that made for 10 bucks that'd be great it was ten bucks probably not gonna happen even
25:48
twelve bucks but the way everybody has been quoting us it's like oh god it's gonna be a $20 plus lure at least so we
25:54
want to get it down a lot more than that's what everybody is interested can afford it so looking at this list and
26:01
there's a lot of people that are with me on the ten horsepower thing over there automotive as powered by an engine of 10
26:07
horsepower or more are required by to have a pleasure craft licence by Transport Canada there's a bunch of them
26:16
saying that you guys pretty much nailed it ten horse on about these registrations so I'll take their word
26:21
for it I believe you I believe each and every one here cuz I don't know the answer now I do thank you thank you
26:28
here's what is kind of interesting you Great Lakes anglers so Great Lakes
26:35
anglers use marabou jigs or plastic worms for tributary when they're
26:41
steelhead fishing both methods were done in BC and being back home now doing this
26:47
semi-retirement gig has me curious about a few things and that's from Donald Stokes I know how you doing still eating
26:55
that boy yeah we met well we met Stokes out west one time that's right the salt I
27:03
find this question fascinating because I'll mention his name a good friend of
27:10
mine I haven't seen him in a hundred years Randy Jennings is his name and he's a
27:18
river rat he is one of the the I would say steelhead originals
27:24
steelhead anglers that that ran all of these rivers on the north shore of Lake Ontario and knew every fish by first
27:32
name he taught me a little thing about marabou James you know at a time when
27:38
when row or single A's that was the big thing I mean row bags were even sort of falling out of style
27:45
if you will single eggs were really big and I remember Randy one time tying on this
27:51
little white marabou jig he's probably if he's listening to this he's probably screaming right now don't tell him but white marabou jigs when
28:00
everybody else is using roam is absolutely dynamite and no Don very few
28:08
people are using him so marabou is a great thing and not only first steelhead rivers I think just about any type of
28:15
fishing marabou is a great product and plus they're little plastic worms Donny for sure people see that right there
28:22
pink plastic worms a lot of guys a lot of people are throwing that on the
28:27
rivers especially after a couple weeks into the season when roll is starting to
28:33
be seen by every trout in there then they can look something different right so they use a tiny little you see that hook look at the size of that tiny
28:40
little hook like that with that bait pink seems to be the color for that so the new use out here they also use beads
28:46
plastic beads are very popular looks like a single egg and a lot of guys use
28:53
flies under a float with spinning gear or float reels and so those that all whatever's done all the West is probably
28:59
being done out here to endear kids so a lot of the things from out west you know we started fishing out BC and mid 80s
29:07
for salmon and there were a lot of things that that the BC folks were using
29:13
that we've never seen in the Great Lakes and vice versa we were fishing for salmon in the Great Lakes and and
29:18
steelhead in the Great Lakes you know at the same time with totally different products so it was a great time an hour
29:26
in a fishing community a great time of cross-pollination of different techniques presentations and in fact
29:33
baits and you know it turns out that our fish no matter where they are and
29:39
they do what fish do and so a lot of these baits work in various areas
29:45
Canadian the Canadian rod father says marabou is badass on local trips there
29:52
you go there you go with the name like the rod father I gotta believe you're
29:58
not gonna argue with that one yes sir Billy Hatfield how you doing Billy
30:04
hopefully you're on one he's that he's a neat one boy guy you know he wants to know where we're gonna go lobster
30:11
fishing with him early you name the time as soon as possible ASAP boney you name
30:18
it were there Oh that'd be funny times who's this Cody a good child wants to
30:26
know how many times have you hooked yourselves all of the years that you
30:31
have been fishing before you you you you say anything I don't mind I'll come out
30:39
and say that I have probably got more puncture wounds on this old body of mine than anybody in the business
30:48
don't laugh would you laughing help myself because I've experienced trips
30:55
with you in the past especially go ahead alright but I do want to say one thing
31:00
and you will back me up on this it has been a long time since piercing my body
31:08
absolutely for a while there I was on a run for about three four years oh my god like I used everything out of my body
31:15
with hooks deadly deadly so do you remember any instances in particular do
31:21
you remember okay - I'll give you two that that are just burned into my psyche
31:29
one of them is in Manitoba I want to
31:37
call it White Rock Lake I couldn't no no I start with a Burton Lake I think it's
31:46
called we were smallmouth bass fishing and I was throwing a pop our and and and and the action was insane
31:53
like like every you anticipated a five pound smallmouth bass on every single
32:00
cast with a pop R and so this was this was now going on for about 45 minutes an
32:07
hour and now like your every before the the pop are even hits the water you're
32:13
already envisioning you setting the hook on a four to five pound fish and so I
32:18
was getting into this rhythm almost it was almost mechanical in in in
32:24
that I was casting and it would just hit and I'd already set the hook cuz I knew there's gonna be fish on anyways at this
32:30
one point I threw it out in and as I remember vividly as I'm casting to this
32:36
piece of wood I'm saying to myself this is going to be the biggest strike of the
32:41
day and as I'm throwing it I'm setting the hook and in fact this big big boil
32:49
came up but I just anticipated it way too too soon
32:54
pull the pop art back towards me as it's coming towards me I'm thinking oh wow
33:01
this is gonna hurt this is coming right at me and somehow I deflected it down and it lodged itself
33:08
two of the treble hooks two points of drivel lodged themselves into my shin
33:16
into my shin that had been the first time I've ever took that one into the
33:22
bone your shin bone with two hooks nice I remember I don't think there was a
33:30
hospital or anything quite close to there any we were in Quetta way I think here at middle of nowhere and the other
33:36
one was on the Red River and Manitoba yeah I remember that one Red River where I just completely sliced my thumb
33:45
catfishing I believe it was how long we had to go to the hospital yeah we went
33:53
on awesome and then on that one we came back and finished the show because we
34:00
hadn't finished it we had come back and finish the show with my thumb all and I what I remember about that one was
34:06
really cool was that a couple of years later when that episode was airing we
34:13
had one of her fans wrote in and none of us had even been attached to it we had a
34:18
fan wrote in and said hey I have a question I just finished watching Red River Cats with angel oh and I noticed
34:26
something kind of weird and it bothered me for a while so I thought I'd write in and ask you and it was how come he
34:33
started the show no no it was the opposite because as it turned out we
34:38
shot it out of sequence he said how come angel started the show with a big wad of
34:43
tape on his thumb and then it wasn't there a couple of casts later that was a
34:50
fast humorous nobody's a real fast you don't worry about that I got I'll tell
34:55
you my very first instance of booking myself I was on Lake Ontario shoreline around Port Hope I think it was and for
35:03
some reason we were throwing spinners me and my buddy had spinning gear and I had a little spinner on but I had a split
35:09
shot you know I get the camera all that guys let's shot four and a half ahead of
35:15
the spinner and we were doing the casting contest typical young guys that distance and and I you know we had these
35:23
like baits gonna see who's good with the white stuff so I remember distinctly I was into the wind or some weird situation where I I wound up I mean I
35:30
was back when this spinning rod rig ready to go anyway when I fling that out as hard as I could and I remember seeing
35:37
the flesh I go like this and stop and I don't know what happened because it was so quick like that and I said what the
35:43
hell happened nobody looks in them spinners right in the back of my head I put it right back in the noggin like
35:50
that and we did that we did that line through the hook technique to pop it out
35:56
and Schurz helps you pop that out just like nothing that was my first time man still remember this one when we were in
36:02
Mexico large mo fishing and right through weight through there where's the
36:09
camera right they threw I mean right luckily we got to cut that off we got to
36:15
cut the hook off and I pulled it right back out and then within less than a half an hour
36:20
later I stuck another one right into the thumb these were fish that were on crank basically stay flash around and I liked
36:27
that and then what luckily the one on the thumb I said and I did it again No and we were even afraid to look at it
36:33
but luckily the hook was about 90% of the bar but he hit the bone and it didn't go all the way through so that
36:39
was my second time I was two in a day and then Stephen have you got that other image that image that one right there on
36:45
our site right now that I didn't last year and that was a fish that a fish
36:52
that threw my crank bait at the side of the boat so the fish are still in the water fighting it through it and I kind
36:59
of put my hand up to him get out of the way or protect myself or whatever and bump right into the hand that sucker
37:05
wins so that was my my most recent one right there so so we get home trust me
37:10
we get the we get hooks in us every now and then yeah that's right otherwise not
37:18
like we're careless we're constantly if you were on a boat with us I think the best that you hear all day is is we
37:25
constantly tell each other to be careful when we're handling fish you know with a crankbait or something that's got a
37:31
couple of exposed treble hooks we're constantly trying to talk the other guy you know it do it through it through a
37:38
nice safe release and I always cringe when when we're at that moment of
37:45
putting a hand into a fish that's kind of a crank bait hanging off the side of it yeah we noticed that what answer is
37:51
talking about earlier about the top water bait he was using and I'm talking about crankcase tiny they're both treble
37:57
hook bass they both have two treble no chime that makes some real dangerous I mean no no bass any bait with towards
38:02
pre travels on it you've got to be careful with then it's inevitable you're gonna get lost you can't help yourself right but it's gonna be as careful as
38:10
you can so what are your stories those are good there's a bunch of sharing stories as well with each other I see
38:16
about your days of getting hook that's great while they look at them as well
38:22
now what do we got what are who got you in the fishing
38:29
what are you into fishing for me it all started after watching read Fisher
38:34
episodes wow that's awesome Wow well I know for me personally it I don't
38:42
recall who I can not I can honestly say that it was not it was not my father
38:52
although he played a very important role in my fishing career a little later on
38:57
but I I remember when I was like I'm
39:02
gonna say six five six seven years old I mean back then different times and I and
39:11
I basically lived on a creek our house was was I'm gonna say two bucks from
39:19
from the Austral Creek and so my whole upbringing was based around in and
39:25
around that that area whether it was the woods the the adjacent woods or the creek itself I spent my whole youth
39:33
mucking around and and chasing fish and back then we I don't even know what they
39:38
were I'm assuming they were probably carp but we had these great big fish that were in the Austral Creek all over
39:45
the place and I remember as a kid we'd go down there and just chase him around and lack of what sticks and in that kind
39:52
that's where my fascination of fishing started and obviously from there I got
39:59
into discovering it was more fun trying to catch them on a hook and a line but
40:05
that's kind of where started and it just happened because I was given the opportunity the circumstances were there
40:10
for me to to immerse myself in into that sort of outdoors thing which which is a
40:17
real travesty today because that's just not happening there's it's just not happening back then it was kind of
40:23
normal if you lived anywhere within walking distance of a waterway that's where you hung out as kids I wouldn't
40:29
yet and and today it's just not not not happening as far as who was instrumental
40:38
in getting me to where I am in my career today I keep tell them the story cuz I think it's really cool so so back I just told you I
40:46
was hanging around the asteroid Creek most of my life it is a point the problem is schooling got in the way of
40:52
that enjoyment far too often and so a lot of times I would take off from
40:57
school and hang out the creek and do some fishing and stuff so they knew pretty much where to find me when I wasn't in school and back then we had
41:05
nuns they were running the Catholic school system and by the way I hope
41:12
there's no nuns out there watching this but they're yeah man they are tough they're tough feet boy ruthless tough
41:20
nasty is the only way I can describe it but it was I had this nut called sister Mary Rosalia and sister Mary a coin
41:26
sister sister Thomas Aquinas there were a principal and vice-principal at Holy
41:31
Cross school and they of course would when I get brought back to the school
41:37
they would give me the finger wagging and the strap because that's what they did back that right and I remember so
41:45
distinctly sister Mary resilient one time saying viola how many times do I have to tell you you've never gonna make
41:51
a living from going fishing so stay in school that was her car and I always
41:57
think that's what it must have been spired me subconsciously to do what I do for a living did she call you by Ola the
42:06
organ back then they all come on your last name first name that is awesome i
42:15
conferred and i got in from my by my dad my dad grew up hunting and fishing his
42:23
whole life then looking way up in northern ontario a little town called Sleeman ontario and they were they were
42:29
poor believe it or not back and then he's probably a lot of people were so they used to live off the land he used
42:34
to do a lot of hunting to feed themselves fishing and all that kind of stuff they had a fur farm believe it or not so
42:39
they raised animals to sell the first so his dad I think my grandfather was I think it was a survey or something like
42:46
that but he also was a great hunter and a great fisherman up there they had to feed their like he had a hundred and ten
42:53
foxes at one time silver foxes they had feed every day so they had to you know get suckers and fish like that they
43:00
didn't have to feed these fish so my dad he grew up I got some stories man I'll tell you he's got some stories I can I
43:06
can blow your minds like they have pet deer when they were growing up that used to walk them to school every day and
43:11
then wait for them to get on a school and then walk home with him he had two pet bear cubs four for pets a black bear
43:19
and a brown bear and the black was real timid the brown bear was apparently quite the character and he my dad taught
43:25
it out of a box and that got him into trouble got the bear sent away actually so the stories like that but anyways
43:32
they had fishing in their life and that my dad I mean from the time I was born obviously he fished with his buddies and
43:39
then as soon as I showed you no interest in fishing that was it him and I were it
43:44
was game on and to this day I mean he still I just dropped him off some fishing magazines 91 years old right now
43:51
and and he's still loves fishing but that's how I got into it and I'm glad my
43:56
dad was a fishing guide because that instilled him to me big-time
44:04
it's great to get them back every once in a while I float oh yeah those are great because we're talking a little
44:10
memories aren't we here's one that that's really a great question
44:16
ken Randall wants to know when do you choose to use a bait casting outfit versus a spinning outfit and that's a
44:22
great question and they're there you know we're probably in between Pete and I will probably give you two totally
44:29
different answers because I really do believe it's subjective and meaning that that that we all were not machines right
44:38
we all do things slightly different and they'd cast and spinning is really
44:44
personal as far as I'm concerned I love big casting I would use bait cast me if
44:49
I could all I'd use it 90% of the times that I pick up a rod reel it would be a
44:56
big casting rod reel however having I said I would if I could
45:01
however that's not going to happen because a lot of the times although you can do
45:10
things like vertically jig with a baitcaster you can drop shot with a
45:15
baitcaster you can light mine with a bait cutting a worm under a dock with a
45:24
baitcaster but it's not the ideal way to do it a spinning is is a much more effective
45:30
tool spinning rod and reel much more effective tool to use under those conditions so so some of us like myself
45:38
you know we we sometimes catcher so I catch myself saying okay why are you picking up why are you putting eight
45:44
pound test line on this bait caster you know that that it would be much better
45:50
to use a spinning in this case but I just love using bait caster so sometimes I'll use it when I should but ideally
45:57
light light is the perfect spinning is a perfect tool to use heavier lines bait
46:05
casting is the perfect tool to use if you want to take that one step further
46:10
for me my thinking is light line vertical presentation spinning light
46:19
line horizontal presentation made cast heavy line for either vertical or
46:25
horizontal I would go to bait cast so that's me you know yeah I think you've pretty
46:33
awesome that up perfectly my I'll add to it for some numbers your just gives people that kind of my rule of thumb so
46:39
I like if I'm run an eight pound test or lighter it's on Bay casting or on
46:44
spinning I don't use it on a caster at all I like that that's for monofilament and for fluorocarbon for parade now it's
46:53
nice and thin I would say 15 maybe 20 pound you mean I'll run sometimes 20
46:59
pound on spinning but usually 15 or lower on spinning then that 10 pound range of any line can be done on either
47:07
one 10 pound on spinning you're starting to get a little bit heavier but you still do no problem in 10 pound break
47:14
and go on spinning very well I wouldn't use not bait casting drop but then then started the bay casting ice a 12-pound
47:20
and up for mono and fluorocarbon and then let's say over 20 pound so 30 pound
47:29
and up for braid on baitcaster that's what I kind of look at it those numbers like that so that light eight and under
47:34
it's kind of a system that I just come up with and I mean I look at one
47:39
specific of it when you when I said between 15 and maybe 20 pound braid braid on spinning I'm talking about a
47:46
normal size you know a thousand at 2500 size spinning reel nothing bigger than that so when you go in thirty pound on a
47:52
reel like that thirty pound braid it starts to get a little thick it's it's not as workable let's say so and it's
47:59
all trial and error but those are the numbers that basically I use for that but an just right the heavy a caster
48:07
light is spinning and and and the other main thing there is the vertical versus
48:13
horizontal presentations I just find although as I said before and I've done it you can you can certainly jig with
48:20
with pink a surprise you don't do vertical jigging with baitcaster just just as well but but spinning really is
48:26
designed for land so one thing it's it's a personal thing and getting on your
48:32
comfort level with each one of those outfits absolutely wants to know oh
48:43
that's it this is a pretty broad question that you have any tips for bass
48:48
pike and walleye Lake Temagami nice clean water very very clean water so you
48:56
got to keep that right off the bat into consideration alright so we did it we did show you as it'll show with the Roy
49:02
arms onto Mogami years ago yeah and you guys started in a smallmouth I think right and you guys drop sounded really
49:09
light line you know some small plastics on that one I believe right yeah there
49:14
are some areas of that lake that aren't clear right now I'm thinking the South
49:21
I'm gonna fight it for us I'm gonna find us right now you keep talking out and look it up I know you're talking about
49:27
East quadrant of tomography it's almost like a different Lake but it is all part of
49:35
the tomayto tomayto me is massive by the way but but from from mid point to the
49:41
far northern reaches of the lake Pete's right it's like tap water it's deep and
49:47
crystal clear but you get down into southern parts and especially over to the east you can get some some off
49:52
colored water and I see if there's a question being asked today about a preferential between state water and
50:00
clear water what do you prefer and in a perfect world I I always like to have
50:08
some sort of color whether it's tea stained or just just something other
50:13
than crystal-clear water I'm not a big fan unless it's early in the year and
50:20
you're fishing some of those big Midlake shawls that you'd have to say on a lake
50:26
simcoe for example where a show will top out it ten twelve feet and with crystal
50:33
clear water you can see the entire structure and it really gives you an opportunity to not have to visualize
50:40
what that structure looks like you could actually see it for real and and that's what I like about that but a little bit
50:48
of color a little bit of stain that water for me goes a long way so we'll often if given the option we'll run
50:54
around looking for something that's got a little bit of color not not completely you know colored but just enough just
51:02
enough to break the light little bit later as that Lake is called cross Lake number cross week
51:08
you know about that and we shot with Roland on that one no Roy Mike later on
51:15
but yeah that was the this you remember what happened there I won't say I won't
51:21
tell folks I'd hear you rubber feet and I've told you a million times that's cross lake so cross Lake is like
51:28
a little lake off the south end of Temagami so you can kind of work your way into a creek and then you can do a
51:34
whole new little lake and it's a critical body of water and like answer says very different clarity than the
51:40
main Licht Mogami so remember if you're going to if you're gonna hit two Mogami I mean cross like as an
51:45
option to but do my we just remember it's in that Clearwater you've got to go light lying on your small you know
51:52
that's six maybe eight pound test but six is probably a better number fluorocarbons better or light break with
51:58
a fluorocarbon leader and if you're gonna fish for walleye I'd highly recommend low light periods morning
52:06
really early in the morning evening and even after dark so you know that again gives you the advantage then and those
52:11
clear waters a lot of time the wall I won't feed until it's dark or low light so keep that kind of stuff in mind and
52:17
then you gives you could start anyway the other thing I remember about that Lake was that's where I first discovered
52:25
and that's and that's because of the clarity of that body water that's where
52:30
I first discovered that topwater baits aren't just meant for shallow water fishing oh yeah yeah episode on that
52:38
Lake the entire episode was shot in 40-plus feet of water and all we used
52:46
was topwater baits I believe so does on youtube on our eating Channel if I'm not mistaken if you remember what it was
52:54
no maybe Stephen can dig it up for us since this it's a rolling martin once Steven Hanson and Roland Martin I don't
53:01
think it's hard to find but we'll look it up as we're talkin here but I think what I'm going to do I'm not mistaken and it's a great it's an oldie but what
53:08
a great experience that was for me personally that's when I first like I said discovered that hey topwater baits
53:14
aren't just shallow water mates they work in deep and we were calling these fish up from 40 45 feet
53:20
it was fantastic so but that's all because of the water clarity obviously if you've got any stain to water at all
53:27
that it very seldom is that gonna work but there depends on the forage base of
53:33
a lake another one we've mentioned earlier hasty lake for for bass it's got
53:39
a Cisco bass in it a note that 30 foot walk 30 foot of water you are constantly
53:45
seeing smallmouth busting the surface smashing through these Cisco's that are coming up on that close to there because
53:50
they're they're above the fin above the suami so they're there and there's Mulligan down here their cause
53:55
can rid up the service from 30 feet of water smashing these so that's why if you can get on a top water bike it works
54:01
good but it just shows you that these fish are not afraid to come from 30 up is zero and then back down again
54:07
our good friend Jim Grayson has a cottage on that leg right yep doesn't much but we're gonna get a moat more you
54:14
know yeah okay speaking of old episodes Paul Madison wants to know or he says
54:21
this afternoon I joined your walleye on the rocks episode 422 show could you
54:29
tell me the type and size of jerk baits jerk baits and colors that you guys were ripping them up with that was that was
54:40
we were up at Paschal egg cabins I think on that John that strip and we were actually you know what here yeah I'm
54:50
pretty sure that's the one right there killer wasn't and that color right there
54:57
too so and we were that we were all set to go with the with the usual jig and
55:05
middle dig a live bait but then these fish got up real quick found these fish real shallow on a rocky point and what's
55:13
that Ottoman link or otterly yeah it's not like that yeah yeah exactly
55:19
and these yellow and they were mixed in with white but there was some nice walleye in there I'm talking about some
55:25
big walleye sitting there not on that point I got the point came up you know really shallow shallow flat and went out
55:32
to deep water that and when they were up on that shallow stuff we thought okay
55:38
the jig's aren't working as we're snagging in the rocks all the time so we're gonna get something that stays above the rock if something's been
55:43
active when we started throwing these dirtbags know that's rapid one I think the the other one was a hostage jerk I think and and man did we start clock and
55:51
walleye but those things and that was that coloration showed you that orange bright orange and you know something
55:57
really bright and flashy pop it really hard braided line on that popular really hard I don't think they ran leaders who
56:03
might have diggers I'm I'm not sure because we're just after a wall I'm not quite there but we really went after that aggressive
56:10
bite on those wall and they were right up on the rocks and I mean I'm talking some of them were two feet two and three co-equal water these were five and six
56:17
pound wildlife it was mayhem it was it was a lot of fun and then later that day those fish actually moved off now I
56:23
don't know if we've moved them off as we caught so many because it was crazy and it was a very small spot or they just
56:29
moved with the progression of the day but then afterwards we had to go fish off the break and then the jig and minnow started to work a little better
56:35
but up until then that jerk pay goes out grabs the Huskies were they were killing it and just pop it and pause pocket and
56:42
pause and just really get that aggressive bite going because well I I'll tell you something people think
56:48
that walleye are lethargic them from the most part they are on the Arctic fish but I'll tell you what they're one of
56:54
the most aggressive biters and hitters in the whole lake like they're they'll do a Pike if there's side by side action
57:00
and then while I want to be a little places faster and he's he's nasty so did
57:06
that mind do you remember where we first discovered that that presentation by the
57:13
way throwing jerk baits up on top like six inches of water on boulders it's not
57:19
away from Manitoba somewhere that's it with God sandy beardy yeah
57:31
yeah you're right flew into that remote little lake yeah and not on to that that clump of rocks
57:38
for them below that that water it was like insanity yeah yeah shallow water
57:46
right yeah did you see all the rocks
57:51
yeah so by the way I just want to acknowledge me that we just got a really
57:58
nice message there from Colin McEwan who's on there those of you with us
58:05
today the new fly fisher we haven't talked about fly-fishing here because as you know Pete and I would probably
58:10
strangle ourselves we ever tried doing a fly-fishing so fantastic to fish if you
58:16
ever want to find out about fly-fishing or or better yet if you're one
58:21
expose yourself to it and see if it might be for you the new fly fisher is an incredible production that that you
58:29
have to absolutely check out it's outstanding and Colin just piped in is thanks for the many years of fantastic
58:36
production and it's reciprocal Colin thank you thank you very much we some
58:43
time with Colin at hotcake Lodge couple years run into each other on the road
58:50
that's pretty cool the TV guys it's usually a total shock to everybody what
58:56
it happens but yeah yeah yeah it's really good it's not like everybody it's
59:01
not like a war out there between us either you know pretty good with each other so so one more question from here
59:09
and then we'll move on the the last question we're going to answer from last week's show is Nathan Spears wants to
59:16
know he was just wondering what model of Princecraft boat do we run like that
59:22
they all run go also what trolling motor
59:28
are you running with and how do you keep from draining your battery life on it
59:34
now this is cool I'm glad you asked first of all the boat that we have been
59:39
running for about four years now we actually built we started with a Princecraft hull and it was an
59:47
expedition 200 it was the first year of the expedition series Princecraft put
59:53
out the fall prior to them releasing that boat we had an opportunity to fish out of one and Pete and I both
1:00:02
absolutely fell in love with the haul I mean the hull was just a monster 20 foot
1:00:07
boat that was nimble and light on his toes just like a little 12 foot boat but had the size and girth and weight to be
1:00:17
able to manage really really rough water and so we thought man if we could take this hall and and build it into the
1:00:25
ultimate boat that we've always wanted we'd have the it'll be it'll be the best so we did the following year we got a
1:00:33
bear haul from Prince craft and we commissioned a metalworker guy who does
1:00:40
aluminum fabrication for motorcycles and that kind of thing a buddy of mine and we asked him if he could help us build
1:00:49
this new boat and we did and it's been you know in our family ever since and
1:00:57
it's probably the most important and valuable tool that we have it's an
1:01:04
incredible incredible boat and if you haven't seen it the last three or four years of production fishing canada
1:01:11
production has featured that bow in fact we even did an episode on building it which was very cool it was called the
1:01:18
ultimate fishing machine yeah milla belong the archives as well and it it
1:01:24
was great but but it gave us an opportunity to really spread our wings you know we have an opportunity to
1:01:29
experiment we're not boat builders but we know what we like and we know through the years what works so it gave us an
1:01:36
opportunity to really dwell into this whole other world that was very cool we got into not just
1:01:43
boat design but we got into all kinds of new little pieces of technology that we
1:01:51
were able to build it to the boat and one of the things we we got into was lithium batteries and and the reason I
1:01:59
bring that up because you're asking us how do you how do you not drain how do you keep your trolling motor from not
1:02:04
draining the battery life while in our case we just put more battery in 336
1:02:11
volt batteries lithium probes and we're able to do that because the lithium's we
1:02:17
less than a quarter actually 20% of its equivalent conventional lead acid
1:02:24
batteries that's all that is not affordable for the average person that there's not one person watching this
1:02:30
thing that would put three 36 volumes in their boats let's be honest right how much would that he and the retail value
1:02:36
American about $13,000 yes there's nothing that would put that on any
1:02:41
batteries in there okay let's be honest I'm so fine you got the trolling motor
1:02:49
reuses the next night by a motor guy there's just by the way on that one it's still got the shaft length that we need
1:02:56
for that books the front of that board is really high so we need that 60 inch shaft on that and one of the you're
1:03:03
asking about the battery drain etc etc one of the things we do is we put our garments to sleep now all the time so
1:03:10
when we're fishing for an extended amount of time you know push your power button on your Garmin and then you can
1:03:15
see it says sleep mode or I think it's sleep mode and by doing that it's just down all the inner workings of each fish
1:03:22
trainer so you're working up front we got two in our - and one on the front we'll turn the two on sleep in the - and
1:03:29
then start the motor back up and then turn it back on afterwards and that makes a big difference on saving battery
1:03:34
- now that's not in a deep cycle side of battery but but it is a great tip to
1:03:39
help you not wear down your cranking batteries that's for sure so that's a
1:03:45
Doug Doug asking is that a fancy one absolutely that's a fancy one that's
1:03:51
what we call her the other thing about trolling motors the Pete just mentioned and this is really critical Alvey most
1:03:58
people spend enough time on this part your distance from the battery to the
1:04:05
trolling motor is very important obviously the closer you can get it the better the problem with putting it your
1:04:11
battery up front though depending on the configuration and the size of your boat sometimes it'll make the boat a little
1:04:17
nose heavy so moving that battery a little farther back down I mean ideally
1:04:23
at the back of the boat but just by moving it down a little bit farther in the midsection of the boat will improve
1:04:30
performance but but if you don't have the right gauge of wiring to run that
1:04:36
that extra length then you'll get more battery drain we use what do we got on that boat now six gauge people I think
1:04:44
it's six it's like you know a half-inch rope yeah it's better
1:04:49
very heavy wiring right so your app you're refusing these trolling motors in a minimum of 40 amps so 40 to 50 amp
1:04:56
fuses so if you look up any AWG an American wire gauge you're gonna find
1:05:03
out the ratings are the wires versus you know the draw the amperage whatever and
1:05:08
number six or number eight is usually a pretty good number but six is good for
1:05:14
if you can do it I mean it's getting big now but but the bigger the wire the more
1:05:20
efficient your any electrical will work that's why yeah when your wiring up a
1:05:25
house you know you gotta run fourteen but if you're running in heating circuits you run number twelve wherever
1:05:31
that's the draw then it just is better when extension cords you get a 100-foot extension cord
1:05:37
when number twenty-two wire ain't gonna work for the man compared to a number twelve wire let's say so the bigger the
1:05:43
wire smaller the number it's more efficient and then it becomes a
1:05:48
balancing act because if you're a performance not you know weight as everything in the boat right so so the
1:05:55
lighter the less weight you can carry the better your performance so now think of what people just said you know in
1:06:01
some cases four gauge wiring would be would be ideal because you you're
1:06:07
running it's a it the length of a 22 foot Hall you've got your battery at the back your motor at the front
1:06:13
you totally work the front and that's that's a long stretch so if you're using four gauge wire that would be much more
1:06:19
efficient in terms of getting energy from the battery to the trolling motor without wasting any so your battery
1:06:26
would last longer the problem with that is that if you're using a run that log of a four gauge wire you're probably
1:06:32
adding another twenty five pounds away to the boat say that right you gotta find a happy medium
1:06:37
just enough player without adding too much weight to the hull and actually hindering your performance so it's it's
1:06:45
a constant battle and beat won't will will agree where we're constantly struggling with with our performance
1:06:51
weight wise right trying to try to get as much weight off the haul as we
1:06:57
possibly can to get optimum performance and by the way Optima performance is not just about speed
1:07:03
although guilty speed is what I do why I've been to it but also for a fuel
1:07:10
efficiency it's amazing you know how a hundred pounds you know boat will change
1:07:16
the dynamics the personality of your fuel curve completely so those are things that you have to keep in mind and
1:07:23
one more thing when these let's say a bass boat even though princecraft's now the fishing
1:07:29
boats never everything even aluminum boats are designed they take in they
1:07:34
take in the weight of the batteries so they sell that boat without batteries in
1:07:40
it but they know those batteries are going to go on it now for the most part they're gonna be LED batteries and they
1:07:45
know if it's a 36 volt rollin already got three lead batteries plus your crank are in there so they use that weight in
1:07:51
their calculations so they make that boat maybe perform not as perfect as it can when it's empty you add that extra one hundred and
1:07:57
something pounds in there and that makes the boat perform perfectly so they use that the weight of the batteries as part
1:08:03
of the calculation just remember that we're getting some pretty interesting comments of course we've got the clown
1:08:09
on Jack some verses on now so anything could happen let's beware that okay so
1:08:16
that's it hopefully we've answered enough of those we're gonna get to next week we'll answer all the questions that
1:08:23
are on the side board now but there are a couple of things we wanted to touch on today before we sign off Pete you wanted
1:08:29
to do that type thing that they I know researchers with our crack research team
1:08:34
went into the right hands so you're trying to say on early-season
1:08:44
pipe so that first week or two of the season ice out right now it's going to
1:08:52
open in the Bay of Quinte if you get to fish it this weekend coming up it's
1:08:57
already been open unzila 17 will say in ontario for since the ice has been gone
1:09:03
because there's no closed season they change that around so this is all about when they say early season plate
1:09:08
presentations this is about stuff that we and I have used in the
1:09:14
has to get numbers of fish and oftentimes big fish into the boats I wanted to go over that kind of I think
1:09:21
we'll do this every week we'll take a web piece maybe that whoever else wants to if you want to write and say yeah
1:09:27
let's go over that let's go over that give us an idea there was we'll pick one and keep going with it we're gonna try and keep it to seasonal two so the pike
1:09:34
being opening up right now soon so we'll go down first so so that's what we're
1:09:39
gonna do here we'll go over this presentation so steve is gonna hopefully put us through scroll us down a little
1:09:44
bit right there and as you see that right hello Angelo are you there he's not here
1:09:52
that little bait right there we all know a Memphis spinner I know and look he's
1:09:57
smiling smirking already at that I'm gonna read you get me deep first that is
1:10:03
probably my my number one go-to in
1:10:08
Coldwater when all else fails so when all the big
1:10:13
stuff that some guys are throwing all the medium stuff that sometimes is throwing when you throw that right there
1:10:19
buddy and it's not getting bit at all I can guarantee you I can guarantee you
1:10:27
don't let me interrupt you good luck with that bait right there on ice out
1:10:33
and in anything in the negative post bond period okay that's what I'm saying
1:10:38
this this is articles about so an eps number three is a great all-around that everybody control because remember and
1:10:46
you and your Bobby Dazzler boat and your big eight-foot 8-foot bait casting rod
1:10:51
with the expense of $300 ah you're not the guy that's thrown baked with a six and a half foot medium and spinning rod
1:10:57
you can't throw that big stuff for that right this is these things are written for everybody you know what I mean so
1:11:03
ungai can downgrade to that but some people can't throw those big baits so that's why we chose a mess nothing hey
1:11:15
guys I gotta tell you who I am bust the beat you don't want right because normally it's a collaboration when we do
1:11:22
these these when we when these top five things but it's a it's a team effort
1:11:27
we fire this particular one I was probably away and it just appeared and so I was a
1:11:34
little bit surprised at some of Pete's selection selections and so I let him
1:11:40
have it that's all I'd like you to question me on all these because I'll guarantee okay that one there you got to
1:11:45
give me some negativity to the naps number three you go ahead or an in line we'll call that no no no listen I've got
1:11:54
the only thing laughs forget is the fact that I don't think I've ever seen you
1:12:00
use one of those in that particular size that particular color I'm a box full of
1:12:08
them but okay that color silver for sunshine yes red and white the old
1:12:16
classic red and whites like that I use all the time and the reason we did that the reason I discovered it wasn't
1:12:22
because of me because Reno and I were way up in Saskatchewan one time and we could not get bit on the big stuff ever
1:12:29
this was 20 years ago sorry to interrupt you but somebody asked about Reno maybe
1:12:34
you just want to they just asked how he's doing it where's what's he up to and you just brought his name up so film
1:12:40
in so real and I fishing Saskatchewan we couldn't get bit with anything so the
1:12:46
guys told us to try this maps number three said get out of here try the maps number three boom Reno got
1:12:52
a twenty pound plate and an F number three so I said okay I'm my name is chief but not stupid so we kept I kept
1:12:59
using that room from up until right now I still use it so Reno is doing well Reno is doing well he had another issue
1:13:05
I think did he have a heart attack ants or was it walking it yeah he had
1:13:14
some kind of blockage recently another couple of students put in but he's no right keeps on like the Energizer Bunny
1:13:23
just keeps on ticking he's and we call him the ring machine as he was being read so okay that's right
1:13:30
run that trick that little spinner trick now it's not my it's not the only bait I'll use obviously out there but when it
1:13:37
comes pushed ups the song show that is a good one and if you don't believe it if you're like Anton little bit cynical
1:13:43
maybe out there like this bring a little inline spinner with you and throw that when nothing else is like and you'll
1:13:49
guess you don't know just just to go back to that for a moment Pete you and I have discussed this so
1:13:56
many times there were so many baits when we were growing up in the industry so
1:14:02
many of the old baits that worked so well I mean the MEPS inline spinner is just one of them the
1:14:07
the spoon the daredevil spoon the the crazy crawler for bass fishermen the
1:14:14
hoola popper all of these old baits that worked I mean they were money in the bank baits and then all of a sudden for
1:14:22
some bizarre reason we all stopped using them they were working great but we all stopped using and went on to
1:14:27
all of the new-age plastic baits and and hollow body baits and all this stuff and we kind of forgot
1:14:34
about those great traditional base and the the map spinner is one of them you
1:14:39
can't beat it for any situation I defy anybody to not find a fishing situation
1:14:47
that a maps the inline spinner won't catch fish on Laurie Laurie winters is
1:14:52
my hubby loves throw a yellow number three blue fox and the pike go nuts on any time so no blue flats are we good
1:15:00
another good eight company that makes him great spinner right I think Bob
1:15:05
racks I think is the Viper X which is a very cool spinner - so next one is the
1:15:11
suspending middle bait no that's a husky jerk up there Huskies weren't great and
1:15:17
in almost all situations I think I said number 12 four and three-quarter inches
1:15:22
5 inches max again we're looking for these lethargic Coldwater fish early in the
1:15:30
year so that you know a suspending little bait small in natural colors subtle colors will kick the butt of any
1:15:39
especially post bond pike you put those long pauses in there the key to a small
1:15:44
minnow be like that it's suspending the weight is the leader that you choose you have to have a leader you're fishing
1:15:51
Pike you can't run ten pound through our carbon straits so you have to so you want to go as thin leaders possibly can
1:15:57
on something like that and you don't really need swivels on your leaders you
1:16:02
just basically need to snap and then maybe a swivel on the one on your line and let go as light as you can on the
1:16:07
leader so like twelve or fourteen or eighteen pound test nylon or seven
1:16:13
strand or single strand whatever let go light as you can tease one make sure that that they suspends properly when
1:16:19
you're throwing that for early pike and lots of slow jerks Impossibles
1:16:25
really slow and then a pause you know five seconds sometimes cut some giants
1:16:30
Georgian Bay because some giants doing that so it's a great day either way Pete we just got busted Reno
1:16:36
says don't let facts get in the way of a good story boys want to fish with him
1:16:48
again soon that was so much fun so the reason that I was laughing at Peter him
1:16:53
and I we have a different philosophy when it comes to early season pike
1:16:58
fishing so he just said all those basically he referred to there's more to compliment I'll just interject her for
1:17:04
moment all those baits that he's talking about are great baits for lethargic fish and and and we use those beasts he said
1:17:13
when we're looking for lethargic fish well the truth of the matter is we're never looking for lethargic fish we
1:17:19
prefer not that the fish lethargic fish we prefer doubt the fish fish that are bang on and they're gonna jump on our
1:17:26
baits and that's where I like to throw these babies okay I when you are faced
1:17:35
with those tough conditions the bait speed star
1:17:40
but we'll do but we try and avoid those if we can how's that be there I'll show
1:17:46
you let's get big yes yeah I got better
1:17:51
than that way buddy that's what I'm
1:18:00
talking about and here's why here's why those baits work early near right after ISO so what happens is the
1:18:07
spawn is done these fish have dropped back but they're there at the probably the lowest point in their annual cycle
1:18:14
in terms of health they're beat up they've exerted every last ounce of
1:18:19
energy and they're just sitting at the usually at the first drop from from an
1:18:25
incoming flow of water because generally the base adjacent to that is where those pike were spawning the ice is now gone
1:18:33
and everything that was in that Creek during that winter period Crete chub
1:18:40
suckers which also were up there spawning at one point well all the carcasses of any damaged fish come
1:18:48
tumbling down off of that first drop at the mouth of that river or Creek and
1:18:53
those big pike are just laying it they don't want to move they want a great big nasty looking chunk of meat coming down
1:19:02
towards them and they'll generally bite and that's why I believe baits like this big baits like Pete was just hooking up
1:19:09
if presented properly to those fish is it sane even using a live bait big creep
1:19:18
chubs on a quick strike rig that time of year is magic so we would
1:19:23
prefer not to have to use those little spinners and the little spoons but unfortunately a lot of times when we're
1:19:29
out there and you're out there you have to do what you got to do so that's why I was laughing Pete
1:19:35
I remember remember that scarbacks shoot that I didn't yeah that was post bond
1:19:41
pike in the old alma region and great little lake little flying lake and those
1:19:47
fish were so lethargic there and I got a couple that were hammers they were like
1:19:52
25 pounders probably but I had to resort to lessons just said my babe believe it
1:20:00
or not they would not hit the big stuff they would not even touch the small stuff and they would barely touch the Live
1:20:07
chubs or whatever I was using I wasn't they're a good size bait live bait under a slip float I really had to work for
1:20:15
those big fish I mean I literally had to have that dangling in front of them and even if the minnow was alive and moving
1:20:21
a little wee bit I had to I had to give them the flow to pool every now and then just to move that bait and then finally
1:20:27
they trigger fish that scar back that one fish and I think that's on her YouTube site - that fish it took me all day to catch
1:20:35
that one fish I knew where it was I went back I went back and went back he would not touch she would not touch anything
1:20:42
in the artificial Department and it wouldn't even touch these live minnows until finally I just did the right
1:20:47
twitch in front of her nose and she made it so they didn't yet that's a 20 you know a 20 pound 25 pound pike
1:20:54
that's an absolute eating machine on most days but this was after the spawn and that tells you how finicky they can
1:21:00
be by the way that that was one of the best fishing programmed episodes I've
1:21:05
ever seen in my life if I do say so I was well produced was fun it was a cool
1:21:12
show by the way we got some trash talk going on here I don't know whether you had a chance to look what's happening
1:21:18
here somebody somebody asked if Reno was ever going to come back on the show and we didn't answer it and then Reno says
1:21:26
they can't handle the heat Calvin the hell's that all about
1:21:31
viola number two we can handle anything you can throw at us pal okay twenty years with you in the field we can
1:21:38
handle anything I want to see you and him do you and ang together on that on the show that would be epic pony I
1:21:44
really think that would be like the ultimate break there I didn't bring back such good memories you guys bickering
1:21:49
back and forth with each other competing with each other I thought about you two fishing the other day you know it will
1:21:55
attest this and that and how different styles it was yesterday I was driving I
1:22:00
don't know why I got in my head about the old tournament days and and how you guys worked well together because
1:22:05
such different styles of fishing so Reno was this guy that would throw us in a bit well throw anything that could go
1:22:11
100 mile an hour that's what we know what's wrong he just throw his spinner bait he throw it anything that would could be work fast and he would pick off
1:22:17
all the fast fish and they didn't want to bike that and to throw a plastic worm and you catch the rest of
1:22:23
them so you guys have actually have a good little system going on any of you realize what you're doing but it was such a and there it shows two
1:22:29
personalities Reno's they can always go go go go go you're kind of trying to think things own like that so it was a I
1:22:35
don't know what brought my mind about but it's just yesterday I believe it so we had some good times somebody wants to
1:22:42
know I'd love to see a couple of reunion episodes where Reno our PHP and Reno get
1:22:51
together sitting around telling stories of episodes past then showing the corresponding clips that would be
1:22:59
absolutely oh we got some i'll believe me we've got some good story
1:23:08
red-and-white there's a daredevil we'll see so there's a lot of there's a lot of people that still know what the boos
1:23:14
were under article as one of them I don't know what order they were in in that article but and I know you're gonna
1:23:21
agree with me on that that a spoon is like without a doubt I mean this guy right here in a variety of sizes is
1:23:29
killer on most pike lakes most pike rivers in most pike situations this is a small
1:23:35
daredevil but they come in all sizes between this one and a five or diamonds the yellow with the red diamonds you
1:23:43
pretty much can't go wrong with those four pike the size would be the only thing that you didn't even retrieve I
1:23:49
think the key to a spoon is it's slow right he's comes in boom boom boom like
1:23:55
that it's just got a nice slow rhythm to it you can keep off the bottom and and
1:24:01
there's something triggering to that to that date that I don't I don't get it I don't know why and it's just basic lure
1:24:08
but that is I mean the Daredevils been around for 30 years and East I thirty
1:24:15
eopns were started in the late 1800s okay so hundred years now self that
1:24:23
red-and-white is that been like yeah that's that's it and you know how many times have I said to you you know what
1:24:30
we're using them cliche what in the hell makes this thing work because it's not
1:24:35
yes you can look at both of those foods that Pete just talked about the daredevil and the five of diamonds right
1:24:42
there's the five of diamonds and you say okay well obviously the five of diamonds it works because it's it's a gaudy
1:24:47
looking thing and it's got you know some red spots on it and it's you know bright
1:24:52
and of course well try throwing something other than a five of diamonds
1:24:58
in those lakes of that Pete was mentioning you know especially the northern reaches of Canada try throwing
1:25:04
an imitation private Dinah's try throwing an imitation daredevil spoon
1:25:09
let's see how you may go you don't pretty weird it it's pretty weird okay
1:25:15
I'll give you another another color tip that we didn't add in there Len tops and this came from Ray Cole Russ ray our
1:25:22
buddy in Alberta and he put us onto these guys wear that color spoon right
1:25:28
there yeah and these are Lin Thompson's different sizes number two there's a
1:25:33
number zero number two he swears by that in Alberta for big Pike and we started
1:25:40
using these knives here too and that color doesn't work pretty good now it's got a glow to it's gonna it's something totally different than the red
1:25:45
and white it's totally different than the yellow and red so if those don't aren't working then maybe you know some
1:25:52
kind of a trigger effect that the glow was working or green or something like that so it's always good to have a variety of colors and change around so
1:25:59
that's sort of a newer color that's out and it seemed to be working well too so but they work and that goes back to my
1:26:06
surly you're on about some of the old baits that we used to use and catch fish with that people don't use anymore those
1:26:11
are those are two classic examples that Pete just mentioned you know you also
1:26:17
and this you know is up for debate some people will tell you that just a split
1:26:24
ring on those baits is the way to go though some people will tell you you have to have a ball bearing swivel
1:26:32
some people will tell you that cross lock is the way to go and so the jury's out on on all any of those three but for
1:26:41
sure you have to have something on there you can't just do a direct tie on those
1:26:47
spoons you have to have some sort of a ring or a snap or a swivel to make it
1:26:54
really really work well that wobble that we keep talking even though I got a shot at what angels talking about if the
1:27:01
order this were Stevie hello Steven hi Steve to bed this room so what answer is
1:27:08
talking about is if you were to tie direct to that you're tying right on
1:27:13
angled mother listen I needed your ease and angle metal you'll cut your line in an instant so normally with pike fishing
1:27:19
you're fishing with a leader anyways but you need at least a split ring so all these come without a split ring in them
1:27:25
because they allow you to do a snap or put a leader or whatever you want to go you can add a split ring if you want you
1:27:30
can not tie direct to that obviously the spoon is it'll slice your line like crazy so the other thing about a spoon
1:27:37
the action of it it's normally do two to two than that but it does spin around it
1:27:44
does turn so that's why you want to use a swivel it swivels are an absolute necessity on a spinner because that
1:27:51
blade turns but also the whole body that turns spoons do the same thing and
1:27:57
increased line twists so that's why a lot of times on a leader you run leader with a swivel on your leader and a snap
1:28:02
and then we'll stop lying twists and allows the bait to really spin nice and gentle true by the way
1:28:09
Reno says he's the better looking of the - that's interesting I've always thought but he's never said
1:28:15
that before
1:28:27
foolish couple more the finish off a list of buzz bait that Kabat Ron right there this this is right here
1:28:33
damn it Ron buzz bait a buzzbait is a great reaction lure early in the year
1:28:39
but only only if the weather permits only if the water temperatures come up
1:28:44
with two or three degrees that day the afternoons I never tied them on in the morning of a pike fish in
1:28:50
the early Coldwater period but come afternoon when the Sun is gone and the reason we like to use Busby's angela
1:28:56
testa this one too is the strike on a buzzbait is like no other from a pike when they hit that thing it is the most
1:29:02
fun type of fishing you will ever get hit so they just dig gorillas from they come break from behind it and they just
1:29:08
smash it so a buzzbait is a good choice big bass buzz bass are perfect for for
1:29:14
these early pike in warmer days let's say so okay so now that you're finished
1:29:20
with are you finished I don't know more you let me to be finished no no I'm just
1:29:27
askin and now I'm going to take my five minutes worth and talk about using tubes for pike but only when you're done I
1:29:33
want to hear it right now so what comes to mind for me is a trip we made to a
1:29:39
place called pim island out of Cochrane Ontario do you remember oh yeah
1:29:45
and we started and it was I think I had
1:29:52
just gone out we got incredibly perfect conditions for a change no clouds
1:30:00
beautiful warm weather the water started warming the shallows were on fire and it
1:30:06
was pike everywhere and we started throwing tubes gigantic tubes that were designed primarily for muskie fishermen
1:30:13
but this one in particular made by water wall floors in Deseret Oh Michael oh
1:30:19
yeah a small little company that hand pours all this stuff in des rano and it
1:30:25
is absolutely outstanding when the pike are on when they're active like they
1:30:31
were on that episode up in Island I don't think there is a better pike bait
1:30:37
anywhere on that trip you're absolutely right that we could not find a better
1:30:42
performing bait than that big old tube and we that's the one you had the piece
1:30:47
of wood in there to to make it flow right or help it back a little bit yeah exactly spending quality you have a really slow
1:30:55
drop it was like it and it did but the conditions were right
1:31:00
for it for sure but it works so well and it goes in keeping with what I said earlier on those those fish are lucky
1:31:05
for those chunks of sucker and charm and decaying remnants of fish that were
1:31:12
under the ice just a few days ago that are now tumbling down into their into their space and this looks just like one
1:31:19
of those things man and they just annihilated it so tubes can be really good for pets as well and there's not a
1:31:25
lot of people that throw that bait either right that's the thing about when you start getting into the more southerly areas of Canada and the more
1:31:33
pressured areas then you're trying to look for bass that are different than what everybody else is throwing right so
1:31:39
a spoon is a very popular bait a spinners are very popular bait these fish can get a custom to those kind of
1:31:44
bass so a big giant tube like that the advantage to that as well as there's not very many people throwing that kind of
1:31:50
stuff right and that's a smaller mic makes bigger ones than that even he makes me shine so there's like oh my god
1:31:56
the stuff he's doing his website you gotta go check it out water wolf and it's he's got some crazy the sheds no
1:32:02
bows he's got some beautiful baits I'll tell you that for sure and they and they catch fish in the right situations pike
1:32:08
and he's based it on pike and muskie more muskie but the pike will hit these things - so what's Kelly what's the best
1:32:18
time to use a stayer bug stinger hooks look at that when when is the best time
1:32:23
any time you can put a stinger hook on and it does not impede the action of the bait is a good time to have a stinger up
1:32:29
as far as I can sir obviously a spinner baits you know pretty much I would say
1:32:35
any situation that you throw in a spinner bait buzzbaits Pete showed you that that big caveat Ron
1:32:42
buzz made a few moments ago stinger hooks on the back of them wouldn't hurt you in essence a stinger hook is a
1:32:49
little bit of insurance especially on a short striking fish fish that are missing your bait a stinger hook is that
1:32:57
that that difference-maker a lot of cases but you know they were primarily designed originally when we first
1:33:02
started using it moves it was strictly a spinner bait thing but now you can buy a little wee tiny treble stinger
1:33:10
that you can actually put on jigs when your jig fishing whether you're using a grub or a tube or even live minnows you
1:33:19
can put a little tiny treble Stinger on the back of your bait so it's insurance it's and it's also a great confidence
1:33:26
builder if you're unsure of your ability to set a hook on a fish and you're
1:33:32
missing fish a lot putting a stinger hook kind of helps with that confidence thing and as I've said a million times
1:33:38
confidence equals success success equals confidence confidence back to success so
1:33:44
it's a it's an ever moving target with that so Calvin on that just answer it
1:33:50
quickly a kind of a rule of thumb again we'll go to Angelo's both those instances he talked about the spinner
1:33:55
bait we will start with the stinger hook on it after all possible let's just really weedy and we might have to stay
1:34:01
away from it but small mote always on the spinner bait large mode if you can
1:34:06
put one on and work it properly absolutely without the weeds and all that so we'll start with a trailer hook on a spinner bait the opposite end when
1:34:12
he's done jigs we're up north on walleye and even on live bait sometimes I'm on a
1:34:18
jig and minnow a lot of times they're just grabbing the minnow and you're missing fish we always start with odo Stinger hook when we're fishing that
1:34:24
situation if you're missing fish you add this thing hook on and then you'll start pecking on fish so that's kind of a rule
1:34:30
of thumb to do yes even make sure you make a note of anything that we're answering from today's questions make
1:34:36
sure that we don't cover it next week as well I would not be very fair somebody wants
1:34:43
to know Mike Boyd wants to know what's your preference for getting baits into
1:34:51
deeper strike zones without the use of down riggers nice control depth machine
1:34:57
without using the ultimate control depth unit which is a Down rigger art by one
1:35:03
of my favorites of all time for this is for Lakes Road I don't know learning they are some small Lake Lake
1:35:08
trollee and you get a little bit thinner boat that you're out there the olds three waist level rings so I don't know
1:35:15
if you've ever seen that you know we all know what a three-way struggle is to get the three rings on this level so you tie
1:35:20
your mainline to one of the Rings in the swivel you tie a motor three floor leading to your lure off of
1:35:28
another part of the swivel another third one you have a dropper line with about eight you know six eight ten ounces and
1:35:37
weight so you need a heavy bait caster rod for that but if you do that you can literally you'll have an almost vertical
1:35:44
angle you want a vertical angle but you can be an eighty feet of water and you can literally thump that with your spool
1:35:51
of your bait caster open ready to drop you can literally dump that six or eight ounce weight off the bottom at about a
1:35:58
mile and a half you know my last week we're an hour and that Bay the the lure then the sinker hits the bottom and the
1:36:04
lure stays about you know two feet up off the bottom wherever your lead is from the three way to your weight it's
1:36:10
better to draw this out but I hopefully I'm painting a picture about that a great way a very inexpensive way three
1:36:17
waist-level a heavy six eight ounce weight something like that maybe even bigger and I'll lead going to your lure and it's great
1:36:23
for trolling deep and it's cheap you know support together by the way the king of that presentation is Islam with
1:36:31
us and that's big brother Reno nobody can dig up lake trout in ninety
1:36:38
feet of water like he can without you and three ways set up like Pete just
1:36:45
mentioned is one of his favorites Dipsy right I'm sorry if seas are good too
1:36:54
but they get down there it's often overlooked because we think it's one-dimensional and that is a variation
1:37:00
of a Carolina rig if you're back trolling in deep water and you don't
1:37:07
want to tie on a three-way swivel with all that back gear a Carolina rig with
1:37:12
enough weight to get you down is another good way to get down to those depths obviously obviously the key there to any
1:37:19
of those if you're not using a Down rigger is speed you've got to slow down that presentation to almost a crawl if
1:37:27
you're moving in a trolling fashion tim-tim Spurgeon also asked did you not use line snap
1:37:33
ways recently yeah and that Bay of Quinte episode we do that all the time as well especially when you don't have
1:37:38
to get real deep but you got to get a little bit deeper a snap wait is basically is a wait with a little
1:37:44
snapper on it and you just snap it on your line you let are certain amount of line you snap it on your line and it'll just
1:37:50
bring it down that much deeper you know you can go normally it's like 3/4 of an ounce as a small 1 1 ounce on some half
1:37:56
2 ounces 3 ounces sometimes but it's it's good for trolling snap on your line
1:38:02
50 feet they say ahead of your lure and then drop it out enough your lure drive normally runs at 15 to 20 it's now gonna
1:38:09
run a 20 to 25 or deeper depending on how long that line you don't how heavy away to get on that will see a snap the
1:38:14
weight onto your line let it out when you bring in the fish in or you're lying in obviously once you bring that you're
1:38:21
really and into the snap wait just snap it off and then reel the rest of them in either efficient over so they're great -
1:38:27
it's good for control depth play around the weights and it's a really good it was designed for them by the walleye
1:38:33
guys I'm sure other people use it too but the walleye guys really get really good with the snap weights and the
1:38:40
ultimate way to get down to deep water fish I'm talking deep water fish is a
1:38:45
heavy drop shot but we used one last
1:38:50
year should be a fun day for stripers and a pound pound and a half they were
1:39:05
using like answered Nick we're using gigantic spinning like the great what spinning rods or something like that but
1:39:10
heavy doing 6,000 size reels or something like that with heavy brain it's like oh my god and all they can do
1:39:16
is a lob cast you couldn't even cast very much so it was so heavy and then there and the
1:39:23
current there that Bay of Fundy tide I think it was learning between 3 and 5 miles an hour or something silly like
1:39:30
that it was like I mean the anchor wouldn't all we had we had to modify our anchor to hold our boat and that stuff
1:39:36
so that's where that heavy weight came in handy so very cool that was that was
1:39:42
Oh fun that was fun I gotta get out doing that again for sure so I think that's it for the questions
1:39:49
today we got a ton of questions for next week so that's great don't be discouraged and we didn't get to yours
1:39:54
today are you a this week is it Friday already
1:39:59
so what's gonna happen for those of you just joining us for the first time we're gonna we're gonna do this twice a week
1:40:05
Tuesdays are going to be q and A's and Friday we're gonna try and get the
1:40:12
episodes kind of themed so we'll probably have a special guest on hey why don't we why don't we see if Rena wants
1:40:18
to come on be the best so let's do that will will the Friday sessions are gonna
1:40:24
usually involve a guest and but but themed so we might have a bass coming up
1:40:33
for bass season opening we might have a whole two or three hours of nothing but bass fishing we might have a tournament
1:40:41
episode we might have you know we'll come up with guests we're going to try
1:40:47
and get you know people like Gord Kaiser will be on the program for sure on several occasions but we're going to
1:40:53
bring special guests on especially if they have something to say that that is
1:40:59
important to us as anglers for that particular period of time we're going to try and keep it very topical and
1:41:05
relevant and current and so that generally the guests will be there for a particular reason
1:41:11
Oh Dorothy Gale says yes Reno yes she was Reno boy you know we might have to
1:41:17
look at resurrecting that doesn't that
1:41:25
old body of his might have to come out of retirement well this is good for him because you can stay at home hey guys I
1:41:31
play ok perfect we're gonna try and get
1:41:39
Reno for next for this Friday so on how we do that yeah I think that'd be great we'll post on our social sites but get
1:41:46
Reno and so anybody that wants to see Reno obviously just tune in if you have questions for Reno you know maybe during
1:41:53
that piece we'll get them or you can get them ahead of ahead of time on our social sites get them to us and we can we can paste Rio with a bunch of
1:42:00
questions and answers so our intention with this during the pandemic or
1:42:07
certainly during the lockdown period of the pandemic our goal is to try and put
1:42:14
these on every Tuesday and Friday we are doing them each of us are in our own
1:42:20
little isolation area were eventually in hopes that eventually we can bring it
1:42:26
all into the studio and continue doing them on even a more frequent basis but
1:42:34
but in the same room and and then we're
1:42:39
just trying to build this thing to see where where we could take it the important thing is that much like you're
1:42:45
doing today the important thing is is input we need to know what we need to do
1:42:51
and so you cannot give us too much input don't feel like you're ever a burden by
1:42:58
saying hey why don't you do this that's how we built the fishing Canada show in
1:43:03
in the mid-80s that's how we started and that's how we've conducted ourselves for almost 40 years and that's why you've
1:43:10
made the fishing Canada show what it is today and so don't ever stop doing that that's vital to us it's extremely
1:43:18
important and please be cognizant to go to our social sites no efficient can
1:43:23
another fish again the fan club Angelo's Facebook page my Facebook page fish in Canada it's at fishing Canada
1:43:30
official for our Instagram people man fishing at an Instagram and keep in
1:43:35
contact with us that way too because we love talking to you and we'll get ideas from you there too etcetera etcetera so please and go to our website of course
1:43:42
you know for any information you want or through our website you can get ahold of us so we have lots of social stuff going
1:43:48
on right now we'd love to see more action on it and be great and we'll be involved with it so please keep us in
1:43:53
mind for that things are going to change as we you know we we don't have most of
1:43:59
the answers that that you guys are asking or questions that you're asking we're asking ourselves you know when are
1:44:05
we going to get back to some sort of normality when when's when when are we going to be able to put
1:44:10
our boats in the water when are we going to be able to do this now we're asking ourselves when are we going to be able to shoot a fishing cabin episode this is
1:44:16
the first year Wow it's the first year since we started the program that that
1:44:23
we're into April almost May we don't
1:44:28
have any scheduled shoots today so it's
1:44:34
kind of unnerving for us too we don't know where or how or what it's going to
1:44:41
look like down the road but we can make this commitment to you we're not going anywhere we may have to deliver our messaging
1:44:48
through different vehicles we may have to change some of the items but but we're certainly not planning on going
1:44:54
away anytime soon in order to do all these things we need your support
1:44:59
now we need to we need your feedback we need you to to you know reach out to our
1:45:06
our advertisers keep in mind is this something really important especially in
1:45:11
the fishing industry but in entertainment in general there's a driving factor I know we get annoyed
1:45:17
with them I'm a consumer just like you are you know I like to consume my my stuff without commercials and without a
1:45:24
lot of interruptions but but you know every once in a while I have to give my head a shake because
1:45:29
none of that stuff would be possible without somebody paying for it it costs
1:45:34
money to do these things so we're no different you know our sponsors we've had some that have been with us for the
1:45:40
whole ride Princecraft mercury they've been there from day one and and I guess
1:45:46
what I'm trying to say you need to support them too you need to show them some love because without their love you
1:45:55
don't have product we don't have a show we don't have this we don't have radio we don't have anything so in as much as
1:46:04
we love having you you know joining us doing these things you need to show some
1:46:09
love to the people who make all of this possible for us and in whatever fashion
1:46:16
that maybe you know maybe just a note every now and then to those but definitely we
1:46:24
need to make sure that those companies stay within the fishing industry and keep making it possible for all of us to
1:46:30
do what we do here here and remember small is better and then being when you
1:46:43
and I are sitting on the nose of FNC wire happen sooner or later and I see
1:46:48
you pulling out some great big gaudy look and trunk of I'll say we really
1:46:55
like spinner P when I know how and I know when that's the key my friend
1:47:02
that's great so uh we'll catch up with you guys how about Friday God willing
1:47:12
big brother Reno will be joining us if not if he can't make it this Friday we'll bring him on the wall early for
1:47:18
him hey and maybe a little early in the day for Reno you've got the bed for his night time by noon he's usually up the
1:47:24
board three in the morning goes to bed so early opposite Oh what are the things we want
1:47:29
to start incorporating into this - I forgot to mention we want to make it lunch hour for simple reason that the we
1:47:36
have we have viewers from both coasts that tune in so we wanted to kind of make it midday so it's convenient for
1:47:42
everybody but the cool part about making it lunchtime we want it we want to have
1:47:48
this program almost as a lunch time activity and maybe we can have our
1:47:54
lunches together we've thought about that be nice and well why don't we just actually have our lunches while we're
1:48:00
talking I ever knew that my damn breakfast today a little old lunch so I need to eat real soon like how your big
1:48:06
machine buddy come on we need a name for
1:48:12
this thing so anybody has any ideas send them in to us and Steven and Jordan and
1:48:18
the boys will compile a list for us and we'll have a look at them and pick something out that's very quickly George
1:48:24
Cassidy as if these live chats will be available through YouTube yes absolutely after this you can get on YouTube for
1:48:30
sure oh I'm just sorry I'm just reading an
1:48:35
interesting one but what we'll do you're not ready to go home yet yeah no I gotta

1:50:39
take care a good angler is very versatile and also
1:50:45
able to to think on their feet and make decisions based on the conditions right
1:50:51
because of you of course of course
1:50:57
