Hiya folks,
I want to share a sonar trick with you that I can virtually guarantee is going to put more fish in the boat, especially if you fish big open water for Lake Trout, Steelhead, Walleye, and Salmon.
Actually, this little trick was taught to me by Paul Powers, the Dean of Charter Boat Captains on the Great Lakes. What Paul does is he thinks of schools of baitfish as clouds, if you will. When you find that cloud that’s thin and it’s spread out horizontally—it’s pretty lazy, it’s contented—those baitfish are generally not being hassled.
But when you find the funnel—the tornado or the thunderstorm—and it’s actually spread up vertically, that’s usually a sign that the Salmon, the Lake Trout, the Steelhead, and the Walleye are coming into the bay and it’s pushing them up to the surface. When you find that, it’s “Game on.”
