Hey everybody, this Fishing Canada episode is by far my most anticipated I-can't-wait-for-it trip of the year
0:09
The lake is called Hasty and we've been here before and that's the reason for my excitement
0:14
Look at the bend on that rod. Look at what he spit out. Yeah
0:19
It's a no-frills, hardcore fishing trip. Exactly what Stevie and I live for
0:23
Can't even get him in the net. That was crazy. I have never had that before

0:47
For some good fishing in Canada. Hey everybody, this Fishing Canada episode is by far my most anticipated I can't wait for it trip of the year
1:05
It's not about humongous heavy current white sturgeon. It's not about giant flying pike and lake trout
1:11
It's not a shot at a late fall massive striper. And it's not a crack at a thousand pound tuna
1:18
Believe it or not, it's about a tiny little bass lake that's kind of hard to get to
1:22
Since bass are my absolute favorite fish to target, this is the perfect trip for me
1:28
The lake is called Hasty, and we've been here before, and that's the reason for my excitement
1:33
During our past shoots here, we've always come up with not only tons of fish, but some absolute tanks as well
1:39
Joining me today is good buddy and Fishing Canada co-host, Steve Nazwicki
1:44
He, too, is a bass nut, so together we plan on having a blast
1:48
One of the reasons I believe Hasty Lake is so good is because it's a fly-in destination
1:55
accessed only by Lozon Aviation. That helps a small lake from being over-pressured
2:01
The beauty of this fly-in is it's only about a five to six minute flight. Up, over and down
2:07
No wasted time. Once you arrive, it's simply unpack your gear and food
2:13
set up in camp, tie on some baits, and fire up the outboards
2:18
It's a no-frills, hardcore fishing trip, exactly what Stevie and I live for
2:24
So right about now, I'm going through a strong bout of déjà vu
2:29
Stevie snuck down to the dock and is firing out long bomb casts with a topwater
2:33
which is very reminiscent of Ange many years ago. Oh man, that is gorgeous
2:41
Man, I really love the action of these. pencil poppers. The Oseri did a great job on that
2:47
It's the topwater version of a suspending bait. That was one little twitch
2:55
Oh, there he's still there. Just thought I'd start my morning and trip
3:03
I watched a episode that Ang did right off this dock and he come down here and started his trip
3:11
I come down before the boys were ready and look what happened. This has got to be good luck
3:17
Look at that Yozuri topwater. Gets you unhooked. Atta boy, he come near right out of the water
3:24
after this bait. There we go, right off the dock here at Hasty Lake
3:31
Nice. The early bird truly does catch the first fish. Although I'm really hoping for a big largemouth this week
3:43
the reality of this water is there's way more smallies here than largies
3:47
That's pretty much been the same way since our first trip to this bass mecca. That said, there are giants of both species swimming in these waters
3:58
Got one right beside the boat, Stevie. Oh, nice fish, Peter. Hold on, let me stop this thing here
4:04
I snagged him. Look at this. He must have turned on it
4:07
Look at this. Look at that way you got him hooked. Right in the belly
4:12
I don't know, I bet you just swiped at it. Dude's the fat that thing is
4:16
And it got the way I caught him. Totally, highly illegal fish to catch like that
4:23
Well, illegal to keep. Illegal to keep, yes. Can't do much about catching him like that
4:28
You can't do much about catching him if he bites your lure. If you try to snag him, you're in trouble. Yeah
4:34
They're going in the right direction for size, though. Yeah, we're starting to get a little, look how fatty he is
4:38
Now we just got to add about 10 inches in the length of that fish. Go get grandpa
4:44
Yeah. So this bait dives so deep, it's a hardcore. It dives straight down to about 15 to 20 feet right now is what I got it going at
4:52
And I says, when it gets back to the boat, it starts to come straight up. And he cracked at it twice or two fish did it, whatever
4:57
It was right by the boat, not out in the cast. Right at the boat, which is strange
5:01
but they're following. We've got to figure them out. Hey, Stevie. Good boy
5:06
Figure them out. Yep. If they do that, I don't know what to say. If they're following and not hitting
5:10
That's half the fun. I just turned my camera on. Nice. It's a largemouth
5:17
It is. Look at the bend on that rod. There you go
5:22
Beautiful fish. Steve and I were prepared for pretty much anything and everything
5:36
That becomes a bit of a problem on a fly-in where you have to reduce your gear. That said we still brought in a truckload of stuff Another primary goal was to do our best to try and capitalize on the array of hard baits we hauled in
5:52
Let's be honest, the thrill of a topwater strike or the sudden crush on a crankbait are second to none
5:58
As luck would have it, the skies immediately closed in and the rain started
6:10
This is a scenario that we simply cannot pull the broadcast cameras out for
6:15
Fortunately, we all carry around phones with great video recording capabilities. So, Stevie and I quickly became fishermen and camera operators
6:26
Oh, nice. what we got buddy what we got i would think oh oh he wanted oh that is a nice look at what he
6:38
spit look at what he spit out yeah and when i'm cisco's right there bud oh my goodness this is a
6:45
good fish i know look at the bend on that rod that's typical of this hasty lake right here that
6:52
big cisco that fish spit out and you can wait till you see the bait i got the fish on even if i
6:56
lose it you'll see the bait that I got it on that Cisco is big and it's white
7:00
because it's decomposed but normally there's they're silver right so wait do
7:04
you see this bait I got him on here he comes again well that's a nice fish dude
7:08
that is a beauty oh yeah there you go beautiful fish Peter that is absolutely
7:20
awesome in 12 feet of water right now and I cast out deeper I don't know if it
7:26
went, if it's deeper out there, and we know that there's deeper water in the area, these
7:30
fish, but basically I think what they're doing is they're out in the middle of this lake
7:33
feeding on these big cisco or rainbow smelt. That was a cisco he threw out for sure. And
7:39
then I think they just come in here, just into the islands areas, into the shallows
7:44
the humps, the rocks, and cruise around to digest. And if they see something that's easy
7:48
to get, they take it. He's not a five. I thought he was a five, but..
7:52
That is a beautiful smallmouth. Gorgeous fish, bro. Nice. He's close to four
7:58
Oh, yeah. You know what I mean? Look at the gun on it. Come back in. Yeehaw
8:04
See you later, big fella. It's called a pencil popper because they have a pencil bait
8:10
It's like their walking topwater bait. This has got a little popping concave lip in front of it
8:15
and a big butt end. You can see the butt end of it. It's pretty cool. It's such a great bait for
8:20
your regular walking the dog. But if you want, and Steve and I noticed already
8:25
with this because he's throwing the smaller version and it's almost sits still because
8:29
that back end is weighted. You can almost keep it one spot, which is key just to drive a fish with nuts
8:36
You know, you pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, and then stop it. And they usually hit it on the paws
8:42
That's it. Look at that. Beautiful bait. I mean, Cisco don't swim on the top, but it's a pretty good profile to match a Cisco
8:48
I just turned my camera on. Nice
8:59
That's beauty. That's that pencil popper. Again, went to the bigger size
9:03
Yeah, I did. Good stuff. Last one, for sure. First cast, too
9:08
Nice, bud. Is it a good one? Yeah. It's a largemouth. It is
9:14
It's up close to the island, right? So you cast towards the island? Yeah, I did
9:19
Yeah. Largy. Let's get them largies. Okay. We'll let him go. There you go
9:27
And it's gone. Beautiful. There's that pencil popper on this one. Oh, yeah, the different color
9:33
You can actually see the weight in the bottom. And what that does is it holds the bait down and it naturally wants to walk the dog for you. Yeah
9:43
Like Peter was saying earlier, the amount of action that you can get with this bait stationary is ridiculous
9:51
And I think it's a key to what we're doing. Oh, yeah. Luckily, as fast as the rain came in, the weather started to clear up
9:59
Now it's down to business. TV. Oh, nice. You were just trolling me backwards
10:05
No, that's small. You're going to see what I got him on, buddy. Oh, no way. I got him on that great big crankbait
10:10
Nice. That big hardcore. He's not bad. I think he's not huge, but he's not bad. He's caught, oh, he's hung up on the side of him
10:17
Oh, okay, he's in the mouth and on the side. This is what happens with the crankbaits. Oh, there you go. A lot when these fish grab him
10:22
No, I'm going to get him like this, bud. He's not big, but he's nice
10:27
On that crank, dude, look at the size of this crankbait I got him on. Oh, my God. Oh, he just got off
10:32
That's okay. That's all right. Look at this thing. That crankbait, it's the biggest bass-style crankbait I've ever thrown so far
10:39
It's a hardcore bullet, they call it. and it goes down, we're in 21 feet of water
10:45
And now I'm cracking the bottom on 21 feet of water with that. The first cast on this hump. So that could be some fun
10:50
I'm thinking largemouth and smallmouth. I'm glad a small or smallmouth ate that. That means that the big ones will chew it for sure, Stevie
10:56
Nice. Okay. Let's get out there. Let's get out there. Let's rock them
11:00
Then cast a mile, too. This bait is so heavy. It casts a mile
11:03
You crack her down like this, as hard as you can in this deep water, and then just let it sort of dig into the bottom
11:08
at different speeds, different paces, whatever. hope for the best that was fun that was cool
11:17
oh there one oh stay down that a boy got me Stevie nice Peter oh I got one too Peter she a double
11:36
Hasty is the type of lake that a group of anglers can venture into and most certainly expect a lot of fish
11:42
Seriously, if Steve and I had stayed in any of our areas that were loaded up with numbers of smallies, we could have easily boated a hundred bass in a day
11:50
in a day. On a three or four day trip, that's a pretty good sack of fish
11:58
Oh, there's one. Yes, on the coffin bell, Pete. Oh, nice. Yeah
12:04
Nice, but if you have to catch a fish on one, I don't have thrown them yet. Right out of the lily pad on the side of the
12:10
on the edge of the shore there. As soon as it hit the water, there we go
12:15
Good work, Stevie. Oh, stay down, that a boy. Maybe girl. Girl, I think big girl
12:24
Keep her away from the motor. Alright. There we go. Nice fish, buddy
12:34
That's it. Here. Whoa, jumper. Let me have a look at you. Thank you
12:40
Yeah, that's better. Now we're starting to connect, bud. Your crankbait looks the same as the fish
12:46
Same color. It does. this is this close yeah there's that coffin bill right there right there and a nice big largy i
12:57
like it there we go we'll put him back down there there you go buddy that coffin bill and it's almost
13:07
you can work it like a top water you know it's got that coffin bill shape and uh you're looking at
13:16
at maybe five feet max with that. But it's great for fishing the shoreline here
13:20
because it floats. You can let it float, and then you just jerk it
13:25
and it'll dig two, three inches down. And then I saw the swirl telltale
13:31
All right, Peter, time for another one. Once the sun rose high in the sky
13:39
Steve and I knew that the hardbait bite, and especially the topwater bite, might slow down
13:44
As well, with such a small lake, it's inevitable that we will repeatedly hit areas two, three, and even four times throughout the trip
13:51
This makes the fish very skittish, making us resort to more finesse-style techniques
13:57
With that said, out come the soft plastics. One fish right there
14:03
Going past another. I'll let it go down close to the bottom. Oh, one's looking at me right there
14:10
Got one, Stevie? Nice, Peter. You're coming up weird, Steve. Oh, I got one too, Peter
14:15
She's a double. Good call, brother. This feels like a good fish, too
14:22
Mine's a good one, but I don't know what it is. It's a good one. Maybe we got a doubleheader on lakers, Peter
14:27
Oh, it is a laker. Oh, it is a big laker. They're a lake trout. Look at that. Doing the lake trout twist
14:32
Okay, I'm going to get this one in the net real quick here, Peter. I would like to get you unhooked
14:38
Mine's still going down to the bottom, back and forth. It'll be a nice fish, that one, Peter
14:41
I got light spinning gear. There we are. Look at that. Go home
14:47
All right. There's mine, Stevie. There he is. Big ol' laker. Same thing. Look at that. That's a fatty
14:57
Look at the fat this guy is. That is a beauty. I'll bring him to your net. Maybe
15:03
There we go. Nice job, Peter. That's a good leg coat, dude
15:07
That's the biggest drop shot leg coat I've ever caught. That is awesome, my friend
15:11
I'm going to pass that off to you. I'll toss that off to you. Do your motor thing
15:16
Yeah. Thank you. That's funny. Yeah. Interesting. Oh, you're gone. Straight down
15:25
Now, surface temperature is really warm for these fish. That's 68 degree water temperature up here, but they were down 40 feet
15:32
Cool. Wow, that's fun. That's kind of a different thing for Hasty Lake for us, Stevie
15:36
Oh, yeah. Yeah, absolutely. We basically saw the fish on the screen
15:41
I told Steve, okay, try to maneuver the boat. Steve's got the trolling motor
15:45
He got it in the vicinity of the fish. We both dropped straight down
15:50
He dropped a white tube or a light-colored tube jig down, which is classic. Dropped right on him
15:55
Boom, boom, boom, boom. Got him. It's easy as that, honestly. That's fun
16:04
He's eating my bass. Look at this. He's eating my friggin largemouth
16:17
There he goes. That was crazy. I have never had that before
16:25
A smallmouth bass, a 4-pound smallmouth bass, going after this little largemouth right here
16:31
And he had the tail in his mouth. That is amazing. I can't believe that
16:37
I've never seen that before. Going back. No harm to him. That wasn't like a pike or a musty grab
16:45
He's just a small egg getting his tail all amped up and ready to go
16:58
This episode's hotspot is a flat area in the mouth of one of Hasty Lake's bays
17:03
The waypoint on your screen will get you right there. This is definitely a numbers area where the smallmouth gather in loose schools It normally over 20 feet so you need to be cognizant of your bait choice Steve and Pete use drop shot rigs med rigs tube jigs and Pete even threw an extremely deep diving
17:22
hardcore crankbait. They all worked. The key to flats like this one is if you're only catching
17:27
small fish, move on. The bigger smallies hang out with similar size fish. Mobility is the key
17:34
For more hot spots like this one, check out fishingcanada.com. It's so much fun coming to a camp like this
17:47
Oh, yep, there's one. Got one, Stevie. Oh, nice. Can't even get him in the dance
17:52
Fatty. Oh. So while we were hitting a gorgeous back bay, Steve made a suggestion to move shallower
18:04
It's funny how a simple move like that can make all the difference in the world
18:09
Got one, Stevie. Oh, nice. What is he? Oh, it's a smallie
18:13
I'm throwing a jig, a jigging pig, and it's a smallie. I was honestly looking for a largemouth here
18:18
He's fighting very lethargically. Thank you, buddy. Oh, yeah. He's not bad, Brian
18:26
Look at that. In the shallows. Look at that. I can't even get him in the net. Fatty
18:30
That's a beauty, Peter. Oh, bud. I just snapped a little largemouth
18:34
Steve said, nice snap set. And so I threw it out again. I got this braided line on this little jig so you don't want to overdo it and bust off
18:47
Silly old jig. The craw on the back. I told Steve it's never been done before
18:51
I ripped up a craw because I lost my pig off my jig
18:56
And I said, never been done before. That's not bad, bud. That is a, that's nice
19:01
Look at, he's fat too, eh? Shallow, right below the boat. I grabbed the jig
19:06
My line was going sideways. He snaps at it with two hands. Oh, that's funny
19:11
You know, funny, brother. See you, buddy. And I'm totally thinking largemouth
19:16
because we're in a little back bay here, and this is a bay that Angelo caught
19:20
a lot of largemouth in years ago. And so I'm thinking largemouth
19:23
and I see some wood down there. Dropping my jig around, nothing, nothing, nothing
19:27
Got a little largemouth, next drop. Saw my line going, hit him
19:35
That's funny. Look at the stupid thing. Dragging tubes and drop shots all day and throwing jerk baits and crank baits all day
19:41
And then you come in and drop that on his head. That's fishing right there, Stevie. Atta boy
19:48
Oh, yep, there's one. Got one, Stevie? Yeah, he come off that tree, Peter
19:53
Nice. Yeah. Right where you told me to cast, in the shadow
19:57
That's a nice largemouth. Nice. Yeah. And shallow up in there. Oh, he's doing the old figure eight
20:07
Thanks partner. There he is. Oh and that's a good little hook set there
20:17
Look at how pale he is. I know. Well that's probably the sand bottom. Maybe eh
20:22
Yeah. Yeah decent largemouth. Fun to catch. Here we'll throw him back in there
20:29
Right there. Oh, there you go. Yep, there he goes. Oh, he jumped
20:39
Looks like an okay fish, buddy, I think. Oh, yeah, nice. He's not huge, but he's nice
20:45
Yeah, it's a smallie, Stevie. Isn't that crazy stuff? Let's see if I can crane him in
20:49
Get in there without breaking my rod. That's the way I always break fishing rods when I crane him in
20:54
But, hey, that's not a bad fish. he was like I mean he was right in amongst all that well you can see the region floating on the
21:02
grass here throwing a jig something weedless you got to get I mean you have to throw weedless to get
21:06
into this the mung he's right in where a largemouth should be I swore it would have been a largemouth
21:11
I would have thought for sure that was a largemouth but um and he fought like a largemouth kind of
21:15
lethargic for a smallie but hey you know what it's a nice fish it's fun evening see the evening light
21:21
We're two bays over from the camp, from our cottage, and we're just about ready to go for our chicken night tonight
21:28
We have chicken tonight, we had burgers last night. It's so much fun coming to a camp like this
21:38
To get to our smallmouth and largemouth bass fishing, we first drove north on Highway 400 to Highway 69
21:44
We then headed west on Highway 17 until we hit Algoma Mills. Then we went north on Air Service Road until we reached the Lozon Aviation Air Base
21:53
From there, it's just a short flight from Lake Lozon into Hasty Lake. The Camp at Hasty is an outpost-style cabin where you bring your own groceries, drinks, sleeping bags, etc
22:03
It conveniently has a propane stove and a propane fridge. This truly is an isolated bass fishing adventure
