0:04
we were we were you know we told you this Jeff after we first met you that you guys are so blessed to have this
0:11
Critter um doing so well in your in your home regions but all of that may um come
0:18
to an end soon if things continue down the road and that's why we wanted you he today uh continue down the road of of
0:25
some relatively narrow-minded thinking by some individ ual maybe you can expand
0:31
on that well certainly uh you know it's a travesty what's going on the the the
0:37
liberal minister of fisheries and oceans has agreed with the Atlantic salmon Federation to call
0:44
175,000 fish out of 420,000 striped bats in the mayor machine you know it's it
0:51
was done without science it's done strictly political um you know it's it's
0:57
it's a travesty so we I can't even believe it's happening I I you know
1:02
we're working hard at you know trying to raise our voice but our voice is poor I mean you know we don't have the kind of
1:09
money right it's almost like they have a thing for the straight pass it's weird
1:16
it's it's just loow hanging fruit the only person they got to get the only person they got to get to be quiet is me
1:23
and if they can shut me up they got a free reign for this thing right now but
1:29
let's let's let let's follow the [Applause] [Music]
1:43
[Applause] money this episode of Outdoor Journal radio is brought to you in part by the

3:15
waiting for Dean is he an angler does he fish he's got a fish he's got a fish they all
3:20
everybody fishes some people don't like to admit it but everybody fishes right
3:26
it's funny I was talking to a a banker um a while back this is one of those
3:32
downtown Bay Street Bankers yes right he he's uh anyways Avid Avid viewer of the
3:39
fishing cidate show Avid Avid anger so I asked him I asked him I said I said Bill
3:46
how many times during one of those highlevel corporate banking meetings how
3:52
many times have you ever said to your fellow Bankers hey let's go out fishing
3:58
this weekend he says are you kidding me I would never say that P how come oh you don't want to
4:06
know you don't want to let him know that you do that I said I I said you're
4:11
[ __ ] me come on now no it's just not something that golfing they'd go golfing
4:16
right of course that's yeah he's so he's in the closet about it you got to be
4:22
kidding me ask him to invite them out for a hunt let's go kill some Partridge or something like see what they say I
4:27
said we're woke for Christ's sakes were woke come out of the closet you're an angler tell the world he no I can't do
4:35
that wow any I found that rather you can't even embarrassed about his his I know I know uh Jeff Wilson will be
4:42
joining us kids you remember him the Striper Cup he is the co-founder uh the spokesperson for the
4:50
Ambassador host host of the Striper Cup and stripers in General on the
4:56
especially on the MMI the St John River uh East Coast new BR there he is holding a large mouth there he's even got large
5:02
mouth he's a tournament angler he'll weigh in large mouth small mouth on the on the bass tournaments uh yeah he's a
5:08
he's a name out there uh just ask him and a conservationist extraordinaire he's going to be coming on the program
5:14
today to uh speak about an issue that's been rearing its ugly head for I would
5:20
say over the last three or four years in Canada um and it's this struggle between
5:27
the salmon Atlantic affectionados and the straight Bass Anglers and it's it
5:33
seems to be this ongoing War well guess what it's come to a head legal actions
5:39
uh are taking place and Jeff is going to fill in the blanks for us when he comes on a little bit later
5:45
on but first batt I want to just point out to the folks first time seeing want
5:53
you there out it does exist we've been talking about this for several months it
5:58
is now here this is the new there's me right now
6:03
this is the new uh lineup for the fishing Canada uh brand it's the um
6:09
reinterpreted fishing Canada brand if you will uh doesn't mean that the uh traditional fishing Canada brand is not
6:16
still uh viable because it is but this is a little new little Different Twist
6:23
why did you not wear your wall your piic roll one that's my favorite I know why did you not wear that you want to know
6:28
the truth forgot to bring it in oh you had it on the other day didn't
6:34
you you took it home didn't you I forgot to bring it in I think what the hell's going on with this guy it's uh my
6:39
favorite and obviously it is the audience's favorite it's been just
6:44
blowing off the shelf come on really over over I I think it was one of the
6:50
most popular fishing or Christmas gifts that uh people uh purchased on fishing
6:56
canada.com how did you predict that he I didn't predict it's EAS you all over it
7:01
as soon as we looked as soon as you designed it you said I told you that was going to be hot that's the numer Uno is
7:06
crazy hot I love it it's fantastic anyways all of this uh is sitting there now at fishing canada.com uh the Gateway
7:13
the portal actually your next fishing Adventure but if you want to stop and shop uh you certainly uh should be doing
7:21
that there as well there's a bunch of other things there there are new uh some hats some new hat designs uh hats that
7:28
have got ball cap hats or ball cap hats with and there's new Tes as well for the
7:34
winter season upon us uh it's all available there at the shop. fishing canada.com if you want to go through the
7:40
back door otherwise enter where I'm usually hanging out uh and that is
7:45
fishing canada.com the front door excellent Smithers what else we got well
7:52
we get some listener feedback hear any that why we do that this is from Larry MCN via Facebook so we got one through
7:58
via Facebook we get through all our Avenues Facebook uh Instagram email it doesn't matter we'll take it all um
8:05
YouTube doesn't matter boys here's a good one that means we're making a difference here an because I think he's
8:11
telling us that we're making a difference here boys I bought a Liv scope at the start of the year to lro
8:16
fish last year we caught 63 fish in 2023 and in 2024 with the scope we got 127 so
8:25
that's over double that's one over double right and he's attributing it to
8:30
it has been awesome and very exciting to learn about the fish that's the key
8:35
right there what he's saying to learn about the fish yeah you're going to catch more fish but he's learning so much about it so lar he's got he's got
8:41
that uh now he's got that bug with the Liv scope so yeah you know what I'd like to do I and this is fantastic and thank
8:48
you Larry for sending this in Lakers right there and it how deep are they 9.8
8:53
ft oh yeah those are 98 ft so I'd like to know uh from people like Larry um so
9:00
he went he doubled his catch rate from 63 to 127 I would like to know how many hours
9:08
he actually spent angling as opposed to I yeah you
9:13
know what I mean like in other words so it took him $100 fishing or open water too there's he never said that either no
9:20
right well we have to assume a lot of the lak trout are probably ice fishing but but not necessarily the case um it'd
9:27
be interesting to find out cuz I think what we're going to see as time goes on here the people are going to say I spent
9:32
half the time fishing more time catching than I
9:39
ever have before and I got bigger numbers from it because I think that's I know that's happening with us right we
9:45
spend more time uh finding fish and less time actually trying to catch them which
9:51
has been kind of an interesting um I think anyways uh change to to the way we
9:57
fish and and we owe it all of course to things like Liv scope and all the technology that's at hand today for
10:03
Anglers yeah yeah I think it's fantastic you learn so much more and I'm glad he and I'll bet you I got a good feeling
10:09
that Larry probably didn't keep that many more fish in this doubled caught
10:15
fish kept versus kept because if you if he's a type of guy like us we keep a couple here and there and you throw the
10:22
rest back you know what I mean now you catch more that same day you're releasing 10 fish that day instead of five fish that day you know what I mean
10:27
there's a lot more released fish too so so um I'm hoping that Larry you know didn't kill uh I'm hoping that too but
10:35
you know based on uh the episode and I don't remember what Dean maybe you could help me which episode did we do the uh
10:42
mislabeling of uh fish uh yeah 140 146
10:48
146 since that episode did Dean pull that out of his ARS did he lie to you or is he actually that actor that's my
10:56
question um since that episode I've been thinking a little differently in terms
11:01
of my Catch and Release rates really yours I'm eating a lot of fish and and
11:08
then and I might want to try and make sure I'm eating what I think I'm eating from well you're buying
11:14
that fish though it's not you're you're Catch You release what you release you know what you release you know your R yeah but I might want to keep a few more
11:21
rather than go to the store and buy fish that I've been doing yeah yeah you know I don't do I don't keep fish uh but now
11:29
that I'm knowing that there's a possibility of mislabeled fish when I go to the store to buy it I might want to
11:36
release into the grease release into the grease thank you very much appreciate that wow uhhuh uh anyways thanks Larry
11:44
that was uh that's an a we're glad we could help you out buddy and remember catching release is a big part of all
11:50
this new technology and keep up the good work which means I won't be as conservation minded as I have in the
11:56
past by the way just just speaking ofver conservation is that your I was going to say con conversation speaking a
12:01
conservation of conservation oh God it's time for conservation courter G uh
12:06
brought to you by the invasive species Center and today's topic is Asian carp
12:14
information session yes here we go indeed uh am I have I got the right one
12:19
here Dean now in front of me that's the right one uh did you know that grass carp the potential to
12:25
negatively impact a popular sport fishing such as Northern like bass smallmouth bass uh yellow perch among
12:32
others how about Laker they even have that for sure they would we just talked about yeah Lake be another one it's all
12:38
part of the system right uh although they're are leak trout as dependent on weed growth do you think as most of fish
12:44
well they're depended on the fish that need the weed growth I mean sure somehow you know what I mean I'm sure Cisco
12:49
Herring and everything there's something there's a connection there they eat the little guys that are in the weeds and
12:54
then that to the cycle like these guys brook trout they going that's
13:01
right uh wondering how they might impact Canadian Waters at Great Lakes if they
13:06
were to establish and we're talking about the Asian carp uh grass carp in
13:12
particular y that one and uh uh join the invasive species Center for a grass carp
13:19
information session uh coming up in a few weeks January 28th of this year uh
13:25
from 6: to 9 6: to 900 p.m. at the Windsor Sportsman's Club in Windsor
13:32
Ontario doesn't mean you have to be in Windsor to attend because I know Dean is
13:38
going to be heading down there to attend now right Dean yep I'll be there yeah that's a well you have to be in Windsor
13:43
to attend but you don't have to be from Windsor that's what you're saying can you would do you think they would make
13:50
it available uh like electronically last here in Belleville there were people who were checked in online who were
13:55
listening they need to do that we'll have to talk to to go and talk everyone and ask questions there's a lot of
14:01
interesting people there including ourselves maybe so it's a long trip though for us right did you did did you
14:06
commit us I you committed me so ah you see mhm you got you Dino I guess what
14:13
you're coming at I guess what you're coming at uh there will be booths expert
14:19
presentations and Q&A sessions where you can ask all of your burning questions uh
14:25
those who attend can enjoy complimentary food and refreshments that's Wonder that's worth going for w they remember
14:31
that night the the local uh Club there the ladies made those wonderful uh everything the sandwiches the veggie
14:37
trays the whole nine yards it was good it was wonderful um and refreshments of course and you've also got a chance
14:44
here's the big one here it is uh you can actually somebody will be
14:50
winning a Yeti backpack cooler give me a hell yeah woo a Yeti backpack cooler
14:57
give me a hell yeah valued at over $400 or just at $400 I guess it' be depending
15:04
on where you're buying it right depends on the retailer of course could be 400 I think these these mugs are 400
15:10
bucks aren't they this time of year like you know boxing day and boxing week they would they would be on sale I would
15:17
think but I I don't know does Yeti put sales on I tell what they they sell good stuff so so whether you're a season
15:23
angler or just uh out starting um
15:29
passionate about uh protecting Canadian Great Lakes this session would be for you mark the
15:35
calendar January 28th get the crayon out Circle it underline it do whatever you
15:41
need to do January 28th at 6 to 9900 p.m. the festivities will start and
15:48
that's all happening at the Windsor Sportsman's Club courtesy of the good people um at Asian carp.com or doca doca
15:59
uh where are we throwing me off no in the news no sure let's go in the news
16:06
Peter did we missed the news no we didn't in the news this is a great story this is a you're everybody's going to get a kick of that and Dean's going to
16:11
run some video I believe uh behind us here security camera footage playing behind you guys okay so um California
16:19
has seen its share of bears breaking into cars but bears caught on camera entering luxury cars tipped off by
16:25
insurance that there was something not quite right I got I can't wait wait to see this thing that's supposed to be a bear in there but what uh what's dubbed
16:33
operation bearclaw the California insurance department said four Los Angeles residents were arrested
16:38
Wednesday accused of defrauding three insurance companies out of nearly $142,000 Us by claiming a bear had
16:47
caused damage to their vehicles uh the group accused uh of providing video
16:52
footage right here in the San Bernardino Mountains area in January seeing a bear
16:58
moving inside of Rolls-Royce and two Mercedes Benz to the insurance companies
17:03
as part of their damage claims fos provid so so so okay let me just stop you there because I'm a little confused
17:09
at the story so a group of uh would be
17:15
individual Crooks decided to get a bare costume uh and go commit vandalism or
17:23
theft in this case and thinking that if we're as a
17:29
bear we can steal stuff from the mercedesbenz and the BMW or whatever you
17:35
said and the local authorities won't bother chasing us because they'll think
17:41
it's a bear that actually stole those stereo units and the headrest and all that stuff I think it's their own
17:46
Vehicles that's their own cars it's their own Vehicles they're claim fraud that's why I'm asking so that that's how
17:52
they're trying to get this $142,000 worth so they trash their vehicles like a Rolls-Royce and two Mercedes think
17:58
about that that must be they trash them so these people first of all they have to be in a position to own these cars so
18:04
these are not homeless people that are just getting by on a rolls and a couple of Mercedes and they have to buy a bear
18:11
suit those aren't cheap I have a picture of the bear suit here let me show you yeah because later on those AR cheap
18:17
right behind you so oh that's pretty good actually look at the claws on that sucker that's and they got the co those
18:24
are the claws that rip up the I'm sure I don't know how had an investment to
18:30
start with yes wow so detectives found the two additional claims with two different insurance companies so of the
18:37
four with the same date of loss and the same location so obviously they were putting things together similar radio
18:43
provided the bar inside the Mercedes vehicles uh Department of uh the department had a biologist from
18:49
California Department of Wildlife uh fish and wildlife reviewed the three videos and concluded that clearly a
18:55
human in a bear suit uh was was vied in here he says after executing search
19:00
warrant detective found said bare costume at the suspect's home at the department said what so the group has
19:07
been arrested what was the motivation I don't there's got to be something to do with this 130 something $140,000
19:13
whatever it was no but I'm still trying to figure that out I know I'm so 142,000
19:18
us so they would have had to steal things from that car that's ripping it
19:24
up too they're ripping it up like they're yeah they're ripping up yeah they're ripping it up so so that it would look like like a bear did it but
19:29
there must have been something of value in those cars that they actually took
19:36
and then claimed to the insurance company because I'm thinking if you've got a perfectly good mercedesbenz yeah
19:44
unless why would you want to tear it up only to get paid what it's worth pre- tear it up it's weird if you already own
19:51
it cars or something maybe maybe they're stealing the cars but but then you couldn't insure you couldn't insure it
19:56
that's what I'm saying you're already paying Insurance because like it's a weird one for so it had to have they had to have they drive it around like piece
20:03
of [ __ ] that's ripped up now and they don't care they want the money more than they want the car well that doesn't make sense at all none of none of this makes
20:09
sense it's just a funny ass story it's good like it's it's hilarious I don't know I didn't see the video was it
20:15
pretty funny the dude no you could barely see it as usual that's what they're doing right they're trying make
20:21
sasquat Bo what do you think is this real or or not give me a thumbs up or thumbs down thumbs down Boba says thumbs
20:28
down uh Nick what do you think oh Nick that c they skinned a bear they
20:34
caught they killed the bear and skinned them left them on there that's what they did there that's a weirdest thing a real bear I'll bet you they had something of
20:41
value inside the car that they ended up that's a damn good costume I like that
20:46
it's a brown bear a grizzly is the California Bears brown bears yep yeah they important they got smart on that
20:52
one they were apprehended and no longer are able to commit these heinous crimes
20:58
and no no you didn't hear anything further Dean on fines or sentencing or anything like that no at the time of
21:03
this recording it this like just happened okay that'll it'll be an ongoing maybe we can report back on this
21:09
one maybe have them on when they get out of jail I don't want those criminal [ __ ] on here thisiss on them time
21:16
for the question of the week my friend which might be a little more interesting than that story quite honestly uh because it's brought to you by our good
21:23
friends at Fishfinder mounts it has to be an interesting story to you it was
21:28
interesting find you would you would think see I would expect that you would find that interesting I you ask more
21:34
questions than anybody I know because it just was ridiculous your interest uh
21:39
brought to you by fishfindermounts.com did I mention that Dean because that's who brings us I heard that yeah okay uh
21:46
fish mounts.com heard those pretty good question of the week they sponsor it
21:52
yeah and uh this one is submitted by a grant Walsh from Alberta via email Joe
22:00
Walsh's brother via email now correct me Dean also if I'm
22:06
right here uh is Mr Walsh eligible he's the
22:12
first one eligible well there you go congratulations to gr Grant Walsh from
22:18
Alberta via email uh he's eligible for the $100 buckaroos from fishing
22:24
canada.com the store eligible how does he get it yeah because
22:29
I think we said that you guys have to read the question and then decide if it's if it's good or not I know that he
22:35
he doesn't know that but I know that so that's why I said eligible he trying to correct me and he doesn't remember how
22:43
things work by the way uh this was submitted via email that's correct now I understand that we're going to be
22:49
alternating this Dean how does this work yeah the next one we'd like to be a YouTube comment so if you comment under
22:56
this podcast on YouTube we'll be picking the next one from this from you so we're going to be selective
23:02
as to where we're actually picking these from we might do Instagram the one week
23:07
yeah so the next one uh if you want to be eligible to win the 100 bucks uh the
23:12
next one has to be submitted on YouTube oh by the way let's make sure they're subscribed as well an how about we do
23:18
that subscribe and leave a comment after they subscribe so if you're not subscribed you don't win how's that done
23:25
now now is Mr Walsh is Grant Walsh um is he eligible to submit on YouTube uh no
23:33
so he's done now he's a rich man already and how long is he done for well we're Assuming he's going to win right we
23:38
don't know that yet um how long is he out of the game for he's on long term
23:44
one year so it's long term I think Dean's doing a little bit of AR ping again I wasn't prepared for this uh
23:52
you're doing good bud you're doing good so let's let's make it a year you can't win one year that's good like so for the
23:58
100 buckaroos courtesy officient canada.com the store uh here we go uh
24:05
Grant Walsh says you guys uh talk a lot about trying not to get stuck in your
24:12
ways uh what are some examples of habits and preferences you're still stubborn
24:19
about or with he says actually question mark quotations so what are the uh
24:26
examples of Hab habits and prefer you're still stubborn with now first of
24:31
all before we answer that is that a is that a qualifying question it's good it's a it's a valid
24:39
question in the sense that he's calling us out on what we've said before right
24:44
he listens to all of them obviously he listens to uh congratulations to uh Grant was
24:52
from Alberta big hand from everybody our very first we're all just waiting for
24:57
him to say yes or no because if we say yes he's going to say yeah no I don't think our very first winner 100
25:03
buckaroos buddy I I'm assuming that we will be contacting Mr walan figuring out yeah I'll get a hold of them all right
25:09
email we going to email them right next one will be from YouTube though and then we have to YouTube them to give him his
25:15
to go back comment I'll them down there all right it's pretty easy to do all right so uh I'll let you uh take the
25:21
lead on this because I read the question so you need to give the answer and I will donate an answer to you if I don't
25:27
like yours well it's not an answer Angelo since it's you guys talk and it's about our
25:33
different preferences and and fishing and stuff like that and I think one of the I think to me one of my biggest
25:39
problems is fishing too slow I fish I try to just execute and work and work
25:46
and work and work and I'm going to get that like that you look at a guy like Kevin vanam when I'm SP bass fishing I'm
25:51
talking about more anything uh where that guy's on high speed his trolling motor is on 3/4 to full until he finds
25:57
something I never put my trolling motor on 3/4 to full hardly ever unless I'm going from a spot to a spot I'm not
26:03
fishing so I think that's one of my biggest ones is I I and I'm working on it and I'm starting to throw more Square
26:09
Bell crankbaits and more chatter baits and stuff like that and uh I'm refining my uh I wonder if there is a study
26:20
somewhere out there that can give us results from Fast
26:25
to slow fishing in other words you're saying that you're trying to you know break yourself of that habit no I'm
26:32
trying to add to my game try to add to you remember we were down at the uh Pro uh the the panamerican uh black bass
26:39
tournament on the east coast and we followed one day we were those guys are crazy Jacob wheeler like talk about
26:45
fishing fast yeah that was insane and and in my opinion talking about fishing
26:51
inefficiently but hey who could argue with this guy he's the winningest dude on the planet right now but he was so
26:57
fast like they didn't even hit that raft that one time that perfect raft and okay when is he going to hit that raft right
27:02
around it and gone like yeah whoa okay yeah so that's I think that's one of my
27:07
one of my faults is that and it always has been I've never been I used to get my ass kicked by when I first started Tournament Fishing I used to be a
27:14
plastic wor and jig guy all the time and then these guys would come in talking and we get six fish me and Mikey burus you get six fish for the day all day
27:20
long or eight fish and then these guys would come out and Bruce Fitz Gibbons guys like that would throw spinner baits and they'd be oh my God we got 35 of
27:26
them today 3 35 yeah yeah so just i' always so I always I've always had to get over that hurdle
27:33
that's a big one another one with me in the in the world of electronics will say is is into the Liv scoping I'm I love
27:39
the forward view so much that I rarely I don't use the perspective enough still to this day I still don't use the
27:45
perspective enough so I have to get onto that when I use it it's effective at times and I'm learning more about it but
27:51
that's one of my things I hurdle that I have to you know I'm stuck in my ways now I got Liv scope forward that's beautiful that's all I'm gonna stay on
27:57
so you know stuff like that more would be kind of in conjunction with that um
28:05
and it's not necessarily speed but it's more location uh driven I'm still having
28:11
a even though I know we have conclusive evidence to prove that there are as
28:18
many catchable fish behind us as there are ahead of us I I'm still a shoreline
28:24
guy when it when it comes right down to you definitely are for sure I still like to use I'm not saying fishing right
28:31
up on shore I'm not saying you know fishing shallow I'm just I I like to use
28:37
Shoreline to guide me into fishing locations justifiably so let's be honest
28:43
how many fish we cut on shorelines in our life right exactly of all species even though we know we know for a fact
28:50
that there are as many fish out there is there art there now that that lives
28:56
scope has opened eyes for us under the water even knowing that I still have a hard time with it yeah and don't do it
29:03
enough so there you go that's yeah there you go uh very good question uh Grant
29:08
Walsh congratulations $100 uh coupon it's a $100 coupon
29:14
Grant's going to get wonder what do you think W if he's smart at all he'll look at me with this and say I got to have me
29:20
one of those and and and the hoodie too by the way thank you de wow see on it be all
29:28
over it all right and speaking of boxing day uh this segment is brought to you by
29:35

30:01
always at a premium price our good friend Jeff always selling stuff though like he's a pretty good salesman he is
30:08
say uh co-founder and host of the miror mchi Striper Cup a tournament bass angler and just an allaround uh uh Great
30:16
Outdoors spokesperson hello Jeffrey good morning boys did you any
30:23
that big snow storms up there or what any snow we got we got a little bit of the other day and she's gone already
30:29
buddy so it's like it's just a little intro to it you know what I mean so well it's uh just think it has to come before
30:35
it goes so we you know spring will be here before you know it you know it hey Jeff it's a you your co-founder of the
30:41
mar ma Striper Cup who is your other founder or the city well I had contact the mayor at the time to do this
30:47
tournament and then they came back and asked me if they could be a partner and that's we started in 2015 beautiful and
30:53
so they introduced uh the mayor introduced me to Jeff McTavish as you guys know him and
30:58
and we worked it from there beautiful okay you you were responsible for getting us hooked on stripers I got to
31:05
tell you no doubt about that we had fished them um on a few occasions prior to that but it wasn't until we we came
31:13
down hooked up with you and we actually fished uh one of your events and we got completely wired on this not funny cuz
31:20
we were we were pretty good at like a long time ago and then we went on pause sort of a Hiatus or whatever and then we
31:26
got back on the St John down in Quispamsis with uh Aral I'm impressed
31:32
with that with Henry Arsenal and he got us under some big fish that trip and then after that we went on sort of a
31:38
Hiatus I guess or whatever just didn't show up and then Jeffy just uh got us hooked on it bad bad we were we were you
31:45
know we told you this Jeff after we first met you that you guys were so blessed to have this Critter um doing so
31:54
well in your in your home regions because you know the rest of the country a lot of us don't have it available as
32:01
you guys I mean you go out your back door and there's stripers everywhere or at least at the time they don't even spell it right they call us strippers
32:06
strippers there you go there you go yeah but all of that may um come to an end
32:12
soon if things continue down the road and that's why we wanted you he today uh continue down the road of of uh some
32:19
relatively narrow-minded thinking by some individuals maybe you can expand on
32:24
that uh if you would well certainly uh you know it's a travesty what's going on the the the
32:32
liberal minister of fisheries and oceans has agreed with the Atlantic salmon Federation to call
32:38
175,000 fish out of 420,000 strip bass in the mar Mishi and uh many many
32:46
scientists uh disagree with that they say that that could be the end of the fishery so you know it's it was done
32:54
without science it's done strictly political um you know it's it's it's a travesty so
33:01
we have mobilized as a group and we're in the position you know to start um with the strip bass Association kind of
33:08
kicking up and we got a bunch of chapters because you know the reality is is that the strip bass in the May Machi
33:16
populate Quebec Pei Nova Scotia cap Breton top and New Brunswick and so this
33:23
population or the or the calling of this population won't just affect new it will
33:28
affect the entire Gulf region and so it's uh you know it's it's I just can't
33:34
even believe it's happening I I you know we're working hard at you know trying to raise our voice but our voice is poor I
33:41
mean you know we don't have the kind of money right that liberal uh Minister he
33:47
obviously has she obviously knows this is going to devastate The Fishery right
33:53
I I'm assuming they can't say oh I I was just just helping like that we're making
33:58
assumptions on that one I think that that might be stretching it saying that they obvious but the problem is a lot of
34:05
these politicians and especially ministers who are in Fairly high level
34:10
uh positions sometimes are ill informed and they can only these people aren't
34:17
out in the field Jeff okay this this person has never been on your River and fish for stripers doesn't has never
34:23
talked to you or the other anglers in the area they make decisions based on
34:29
what they're told by their people so let's not make an assumption that that
34:34
she would know that this is going to devastate stri so you would think that would you not think that she'd say well
34:40
why are we going to call 175,000 fish there's got to be a reason for that and then somebody's going to [ __ ] her or
34:46
you're you're what you're saying right well they the the director the director
34:51
of DFO and the DFO there's a coswick report put out by science that was to be
34:57
delivered to the Minister that asked this question two years ago and before
35:02
the science came they made the decision even though they knew the science would go against it um the DFO uh talked to a
35:11
reporter today who actually called me to get some insight on this who said that he tried to get DFO to comment they
35:17
would talk about everything but salmon and stripers and so they've been told to be quiet yeah um it be so you're not
35:25
going to get the true information um you know there is a go ahead sorry if
35:31
we could just go down a little bit of uh Memory Lane here and and bring a little history to the segment this is not the
35:39
first time that stripers have been targeted uh it happened as recently as
35:45
the early 9s I believe in your area where similar not quite the same but
35:52
similar new regulations were put in effect and I I believe within what was
35:57
was it 2 years 3 years the population was pretty much all gone to the point
36:02
where they had to shut everything down and say okay okay okay uh no more no
36:08
more stripers uh leave them alone because they're going to collapse and yet here we are again going down that
36:14
same road history repeats itself you know like the city the Marmi River back
36:19
in the early 1900s say 1900 to you know pretty much right around the the 70s we
36:27
harvested about 60 tons a year of strip bass out of the river and so the historical levels were nowhere near that
36:34
but in 1995 there was 175,000 fish in this in this in the
36:41
school and it was the last year commercial Fisheries the very next year there was only
36:47
13,500 left and so they went into a shut down and they shut the Fisheries down
36:54
and I don't know if you've been watching on the social media but we put all kinds of documents out there newspaper
36:59
clippings they got to shut this down and everybody complaining which they did and then um it was right up until just about
37:08
20012 2002 that they started to see some um rebound like there was some in the
37:15
river and guys were using them and that's when I was up there fishing them it was just hook and release because there was no
37:20
season and um so they they did bump up uh fairly good uh right up until about
37:27
20 18 there was a big blip in 2018 to almost a million fish and then in in
37:33
2019 that went down to less than 400,000 wow and so that was no
37:40
commercial Fisheries or anything and and it's just because of the northern um how
37:46
North these fish are so they said a lot of those fish moved to Labrador and around looking for you know new Homeland
37:52
new water and they they died a lot of them died but the the history is there
37:59
this this I you know this uh document from DFO talks about a lower and upper
38:05
reference point for the school and we're in the cautious zone right now and even now they're going to go ahead and do
38:12
exactly what they did in 1995 same thing same exact same thing
38:17
expect a different different result you know let's let's bring people up to speed that might be new to this whole
38:24
thing when when we say they and you referenced now politics you've
38:29
referenced DFO but really the Crux of this and and the pressure from this whole movement uh from what most of us
38:38
can tell is from the Atlantic salmon Federation and what I find interesting
38:43
there is that most of those folks that belong to that organization are well-intentioned people and they truly
38:50
are conservationists they've had to be following the Atlantic salmon obviously but I think they're misinformed
38:59
because the bass the striper bass in Miri for example has absolutely nothing
39:05
to do with the decline of the Atlantic salmon and yet they're being fed that
39:11
information for reasons unknown to most of us that it's the bass's fault and
39:17
therefore we need to eradicate the bass it's like a bunch of vigil Vigilantes with with guns and pitchforks going out
39:24
you know in the dark trying to find the bad guys it's probably an easy excuse right it's I mean there's so many these
39:29
stripers in there they're racist eater they could you use that as their first excuse and eradicate them and then if it
39:35
doesn't work then we have to try something else maybe I don't know what what their it's a weird thing I'm trying to analyze this thing and and I just
39:42
can't get a grip on it I don't understand what the motivation is it's almost like they have a thing for the
39:50
strip bass it's weird it's it's just loow hanging fruit the only person got
39:56
to get the only person that get to get to be quiet is me and if they can shut me up they got a free reign for this
40:03
thing right now but let's let's let's follow the money I mean at the end of
40:08
the day it's all about the money and uh if you look carefully at the folks that
40:14
donate uh big money um you'll find that uh why they go silent on certain things
40:21
that are detrimental um to this um you know it's it's it's it's a crazy thing
40:29
but they got a lot of money and like I don't want to talk to a forestry company because they give me $20 million so no
40:35
one wants to talk about how fast these Rivers you've been there when it rains and it fills the river up in one day and it's gone that used to take weeks to for
40:43
that trickle down cold water to keep the rivers cool doesn't happen anymore we're
40:48
not going to talk about that though because that's we get paid for that we don't want to talk about a lot of
40:54
different things and and they stopped the stock they stopped the hatches hatcheries all
41:00
of this happened before we did all this before this is not new you're talking hatcheries for Atlantic salmon yeah yeah
41:07
yeah exactly uh one of the silent benefactors that's kind of sitting back
41:13
taking all this in I find kind of interesting as well and maybe taking flak for something they don't deserve to
41:19
take FL war is the Aboriginal communities in their areas because they've all of a sudden been given this
41:26
opportunity to harvest what three times more stripers than they ever have
41:31
traditionally and they got nothing they they don't even want it it's not even like they went to Ottawa and said hey
41:37
we'd like more more you know license quotas no it's just it was sort of
41:42
thrown out on their plate you know they there been traditionally we have
41:48
manipulated them over centuries and this is just the final manipulation that uh
41:54
we want you to get on to this and they haven't been able be successful they're going to sell this for lobster bait so
42:00
it's not even value added and but here's here here's the thing like we're not you
42:05
know the natives uh have a net just below the barrier net on the northwest
42:12
Marmi and you could get a $20 salmon this summer in the mar machine no problem no kidding what so if if you
42:20
know now apparently they're allowed food and ceremonial right but any true
42:26
conservationist if we're actually at the point that we feel like the salmon are in danger with they are and I think the
42:32
salmon Fisher should be shut down just like they did Bash if they're true
42:37
conservationists would you not um stop that would you stop that well if I was
42:45
truly committed to conserving the Atlantic salmon on the eastern part of
42:50
Canada I would absolutely first thing I would do is shut it all down have a have
42:56
some kind of a moror on on that whole fishery until further notice until we
43:01
can actually get to the bottom of it and find out what the hell's going wrong but but that's not the approach they're
43:07
taking they're saying no no let's let's kill stripers and anything else that we think
43:12
is probably the cause we're not sure there's no science involved but that could be the cause for the demise of the
43:19
Atlantic salmon as opposed to saying we need to stop fishing for them shut down salmon Federation
43:28
continues with hook and release on the marer river with a 9% U delayed mortality on hook and release fishing so
43:34
they in fact are killing the same fish they're trying to conserve the other thing is is that that the we have had
43:42
diet studies of the strip bass 1100 fish randomly sampled less than 2% in their stomach contents were salmonoid which
43:49
means that some of those could be trout so there's there's plenty of scientific evidence that and many reports by dfl
43:55
that the strip basss are not having a significant impact on Atlantic salmon and all the rivers around Atlantic
44:01
Canada are in the same situation and they don't have any strike basss so it's an easy scapegoat to to to stop the
44:09
difficult conversation of shutting the fishery down and and following exactly
44:15
what they did with the stripe bass where they shut it down allowed it to rebound for 20 years and then opened it back up
44:20
that's a very difficult decision and a lot of economic impact to the lodge owners up the rivers and all sorts of
44:27
things which we you know certainly would be devastating to some of those folks uh
44:33
just like when we shut the Cod fishery down which has never rebounded in 30 years and and the number one concern
44:40
that is right across the Gulf Coast is the nutrient sources in the river we have decimated the Herring and the
44:46
rainbow smell for a lobster feed because there's no quotas and if you can have a
44:52
number of um commercial Enterprises would stand on the show and talk talk you about the same thing and so when you
44:59
don't have nutrient Source you don't have big fish so that's the Cod have not come back and all those things is
45:05
exactly the same procedure that happens so when you're in the mar Machi um typically the uh the the the
45:14
the bass would be in the mar machine in the spring and the par and would be coming down there would be a smoke
45:21
screen of Herring and all the other fish that the stripe bass actually Target and
45:26
so that smoke screen's gone and when you talk to the smelt guys that fish and I
45:31
talked to them all you guys know Matthew grian great great guy commercial fisherman he'll be the first one to tell
45:37
you that they over harvested the river for Herring and and rainbow smell so you
45:43
know we we always hear the argument well we got to have balance the Sam guys well we can't have that many stripers ins out
45:49
of balance so my question is would you like the balance to be 1930 1920 1980 like what balance are talking
45:57
about here right no no we just want more salmon we don't really care about balance we just want more salmon right
46:03
and so it's us or them type War that's going on right now and and and the Sam
46:10
the striper guys like the Sam guys catching fish is boring and I'm going I never talked to anybody that told me
46:17
catching too many fish was boring like that's that's been not a thing that's why they're all out there buying $50,000
46:22
boats and $50,000 trucks and Liv scope this and yeah it's boring oh I hate it
46:28
I'm never going again not too many why my kids want to go all the time by the way by the way I want to know where
46:34
you're buying a $50,000 boat and a $50,000 truck cuz I want to come in and buy some of those okay because because
46:40
that's yeah the economic impact and I talk like some of the businesses in the mar machine and and they're pretty upset
46:46
too and but they have to be so careful because of the politics like if you're a boat dealer and you speak out you know
46:53
it's even like you know me talking about the First Nation is like you know you got to be you got to be careful this is
47:00
not uh you know you've heard of the El fishery that's been decimated now because everybody's chasing it that
47:06
every fishery the lobster fishery the the competition for money yeah is so big
47:13
and um it's it's crazy and for them it's easy money it's about getting easy money
47:19
and you know I like I'm passion I I salmon fished my life I'd love to see the salmon come back but I'm I'm not and
47:26
I not found one scientist that will say if we get rid of every strip bass the
47:32
salmon will rebound right and if I find one Jeff's
47:37
got hey Jeff does anybody talk about what what I feel is the elephant in the
47:43
room um this is not something that is unique to Eastern Canada and I'm talking
47:49
about the plight of the Atlantic salmon it's a global thing what are they doing in in the uh Scandinavian countries
47:56
where where their salmon fishery is even in worse condition than ours is is there
48:01
a stripe bass uh pandemonium I saw an article I saw an article I shared on
48:07
Facebook the other day was from Norway saying how their salmon are depleted and everything and I put on there those darn
48:12
Marmi strip B slam over the ocean ate the salmon and came
48:18
[Music] home you know and and like I just like it's their their efforts the salmon
48:24
federation's efforts and I don't make any money straight past I have to volunteer for my time I don't get paid
48:29
200 Grand to be the director of ASF I don't have all the money that in the world like they do um if they spent more
48:38
time actually thinking about conservation um you know then we'd be in
48:44
better shape like really the Strat bass fisherman even even we're inviting a lot
48:50
of people have come into the fishery and now are like really thinking about over harvesting like they think there's so
48:55
many of them and we're putting a bad message out there because people are taking bigger fish than they should I
49:01
don't know you guys fam last time you were here but I certainly and intuitive data says we're not seeing as big the
49:08
bigger stripe B like we used to we've already seen a we've already seen an impact of the fishing absolutely and so
49:15
we really should be thinking about as further conservation measures because
49:21
the measures that been more liberal have actually really hurt and so I'm a Believer in Harvest like Tak one for the
49:27
you know take one home with you that's great um that you should take it home but I you know this whole idea of guys
49:35
filling their freezers nothing good has ever come from that ever so or using it
49:40
for lobster bait speaking of speaking of which have you have you talked I'm sure you have you've talked to somebody in
49:46
the native Community they get an a quote of 125,000 more uh fish are they are are
49:52
they saying yes guy thank you so much or are they saying this is stupid guys this is well you got to remember like there's
49:58
there's only from what I understand and I don't I don't have all the information because the DFO guards that with their
50:05
life right you don't get public from what I understand there's only one Harvester that's uh benefiting from all
50:13
that quota they haven't been able to get it in fact two years ago they left their Nets in all winter because they couldn't
50:19
get them out and um and so we see it we see it along the rivers you guys are
50:24
here um you know it's I went there to meet I thought there was such a great economic opportunity for us to have a
50:31
limited commercial fishery through the First Nations to Value add that product to be served within the restaurants in
50:37
the Marmi region and and really value add that so that we save the school and
50:45
increase the monetary return for them and and if you have a less
50:51
recreational uh efforts in terms of harvest then the value of that
50:57
restaurant meal over at the rods in goes way up way up and that's that's what people have to understand uh is is
51:04
exactly what you just said now the unfortunate part with this though Jeff and we've told you this in the past one
51:10
of the things we're usually disappointed with on our trips down to the year neck
51:16
of the woods the east coast is that there are no opportunities to go to a
51:22
restaurant and actually have a stripe bass meal nobody utilizing it anyways so
51:29
really you're devaluating something that's already not being used I I and to use it for lobster bait I mean that's
51:36
just it's one of the nicest fish we've ever eaten I mean it's unbelievably good but think about if you're a single
51:42
Harvester with three or four guys and you pull in 50,000 fish and you get $4 of fish forun you make 200 Grand you
51:47
only been at it for a week it's not bad there's nothing wrong with that at all money so why would you why would you go
51:53
ahead and try and value ad stuff and they they you know they did things like
51:58
they're allowed to keep big fish in those Nets like they don't have the slot limit they did have a slot limit and
52:03
then they took that away and so now that's why we're seeing the the impact
52:09
the other thing that really bothers me the most and this is this is the part that I'm after DFO what does our
52:14
recruitment number look like down in the United States they're almost ready to shut the fishery down because the young
52:20
of the year are not surviving and they know that that's going to have an impact we don't even know the fish that we're
52:26
counting are four years old or better so we could have a problem we won't even know for four years and when you're here
52:34
in the spring and you've been here the last couple of Springs the spawns gone and they got cold and then it went on
52:40
again and off and who knows what the survival rate of those fry are um not
52:46
great if it gets cold yeah I'm glad you mentioned temperature because I think that obviously has a lot to do with
52:52
what's going on with the stripers in the river but um this last time that we were
52:57
there we we did find some interesting facts that that one or two degrees will
53:04
shut that spawn down immediately and and and they'll head back out and most of
53:10
them will not come back in to reproduce so that has a lot to do with what we've
53:16
noticed the last few years down there there's just not the same numbers coming in with that in mind the few that are
53:22
coming in if now they're getting harvested at the rate that the uh new regulations will allow I think your
53:29
estimate about the total decline within three years I think is way off I think it could happen immediately if not as we
53:36
speak it won't take that long before we find out uhoh we've need to we need to shut it
53:43
down just Kidd you know just I would I would love to have an economic impact study com comprehensive on the value of
53:51
that fish released versus the value of that fish taken and and what it means to
53:58
all the villages around the whole coast of the of New Brunswick gas Bay they're up there
54:05
Andrew Murphy and those fellas are doing a great job they got a great fishery Going On Fishing the Flats all down
54:11
risho Cap all through buckus and and Shediac and now over in PEI two or three
54:18
new tackle shops people out fish in the flats all those fish come from the mayor Machi and so as the stripe basso ation
54:26
we saw some of our we've got a petition on the go 7,000 people so far we started
54:32
to get chapters of that in each one of the provinces we're in the process of Constitution and bylaws so we can set up
54:39
bank accounts to start getting donations to fund a a legal fund to get after these folks because we 16,000 people in
54:48
in Quebec are already signed up for their group um so we think we've got more votes than the salmon guys and one
54:54
thing I know for sure we got if we got more we're gonna win and we just have to have a way to
55:02
organize it and you know I got some pretty good guys they always go well you take the lead on that I'm like I can't
55:08
take the lead on everything like come on like we need everybody's got to put their shoulder behind this right I'm
55:14
happy to assist um in January there's a stakeholder meeting at the Eastern uh
55:20
Recreation advisory committee for DFO and we're planning you know we're planning to have a big uh big push there
55:26
last year I went there and I told people at the time that there that this was going to happen and they all told me I
55:32
was crazy and I said no I can read the tea leaves can just tell by the way things are going they're going to take
55:38
another 100,000 and I even had some of the scientist all Jeff that'll never happen I'm telling you I you know the
55:46
the salmon guys when you think about it the ne brri salmon Council the the March salmon Association the Atlantic salmon
55:54
Federation the marchine water the kubba quack [ __ ] Watershed they're all the
55:59
same damn people yeah right so there's the the mayor Mach straber Hub has a
56:05
seat at that table so we get to ask good questions but now we're going to try and get um I can see them looking at your
56:13
group though and saying yeah but they've got a vested interest yeah you know it's money what
56:18
what's the difference between money um spent on the stripe bass tournament
56:25
fishing than it is for salmon Angler's recreational fishing money is money you
56:31
know so I can see them using that as a as a I mean let's let's be honest none
56:37
of us are completely uh clear of this we all do it for our own selfish reasons
56:44
you know I want to see I want to see that fish survive there because I selfishly want to go out and fish for
56:49
them so I've got a sort of hidden agenda as well the only thing here that I I
56:57
have to question going back to and I don't want it I don't want this to be a Witch Hunt uh against the Atlantic Salon
57:04
Federation CU I want to tell you as well some 20 some odd years ago we worked very closely with the Federation uh down
57:11
there and at that time U uh the president was John Anderson I believe I
57:17
could be wrong but I believe that was his name and they were doing some really really good work you could see that
57:25
there was a purpose for it them you could see that they actually rolled up their sleeves and they went out and got their their feet wet you know in the
57:32
rivers and and actually worked to conserve the species but I'm I'm sensing there's been a a lack of that as a well
57:40
I think they're still doing that I mean they're working on habitat and they're okay you know they're they're still doing all that the part that and we
57:47
support that we support all that that work so scapegoating the strip bass to
57:53
try and call them is makes no sense scientifically it's not going to be the
58:00
thing that saves the stripe bat or the salmon so all they're doing is starting a war with 20,000 people uh that really
58:08
enjoy off Fisheries like I'm not out there going I you know let's let's kill all the Sal and then we don't have to
58:14
have this conversation anymore and then you know that's not what we're talking about we're talking about we believe in
58:20
Salmon conservation I believe now more than ever that we need to shut that fishery down yeah we need to shut it
58:27
down and and and and and never mind you know hook and release up in these pools
58:33
in August when they got to shut every day it's okay it's open because the water temperature is good and then tomorrow it's shut because it's too warm
58:40
you know that salmon is gonna be stressed and then he's going to be living in that and we know you know and
58:46
then all that sort of thing like it's just ridiculous and so we should be having a two mile buffer zone around the
58:53
river and tributary so that the the canop is there to cool the water that'll
58:58
never happen is anybody is anybody talking like that is anybody other than yourself uh that maybe is a little more
59:06
invested in the salmon fishery are any of them talking the way you're talking right now or is this all about killing
59:12
the bass let's just get rid of bass and we'll be I sit at that stakeholder meeting and I don't hear anything about
59:17
that wow all I hear about is we got to get rid of these strip bass and the populations and blah blah blah czy they
59:25
would a lot more traction but they're not going to you know what I mean because the the big Timbers Timber
59:32
companies they need this this stuff but we should be able to have uh better buffer zones we don't even have anybody
59:38
in the woods looking at the buffer zones as they sit today like you go around
59:44
it's illegal to cut within 75 meters of the of the water yet I can run up the river on the St John River in any given
59:50
day and see people trimming Hedges and stuff off the river like and it it's
59:55
it's called encroachment and that's why this fish is in Peril all over the planet it's not
1:00:01
just there everywhere that it used to thrive is not it's just not happening anymore I mean when you when you look at
1:00:08
if nothing else when you look at temperature change they probably one of the most sensitive fish when it comes to
1:00:14
to one degree for sure right and and all of these things that you just mentioned
1:00:20
that we are responsible for you know whether it's clear cutting or or spraying pesticides or or diverting dams
1:00:28
how about dams has anybody said hey we've obstructed John River got a great
1:00:33
big dam in the middle of it it was the largest salmon river in the world yeah right before the dam now yeah true 31
1:00:41
samon last year went over the dam oh my God 31 wow so you guys were here at the
1:00:47
paname up in nck up in that water 31 so they shut the rest of the river all the
1:00:53
way to Beachwood to protect those 31 which which is Noble in theory it you
1:00:59
know it makes sense there only 31 we have to protect them but but there might be only 30 now my buddy got one a couple
1:01:05
of weeks ago but anyway I'm just joking hey Jeff sorry an uh you said that there
1:01:11
used to be in the native uh call there used to be a size limit and now they've
1:01:16
dropped that as well yeah in the in the commercial fishery yeah so they're obviously live catching these then
1:01:23
the're netting they netting trap net trap Nets okay so there we've seen them
1:01:29
I just want the audience to understand that these aren't Gil Nets and they're not you know just catching and killing everything so there is a a possibility
1:01:34
of a 20 lb s uh striper could be released there there's a quot of there that they they don't have to now that's
1:01:42
insult struggled part of the asf's proposal to DFO was for DFO to help the
1:01:49
natives actually get these fish and develop a market for them so they said
1:01:54
look you got to help them get the fish and you need to help them build a market to sell them right which makes sense if
1:01:59
you're on that side of the equation it makes sense right let's build a market you know build it and they will come in
1:02:06
this case build the market and they will harvest fish and sell it to us so yeah who's going to buy a I mean you're
1:02:11
you're going to have a nice Prime Perfect stripe bass as we all know the prime size you know eating whatever in
1:02:17
that 20 something inch range versus a 40in fish you know that I mean people maybe they won't realize it but I don't
1:02:23
know where they're going to sell a 40in fish or who's going to buy a 40 in is not better well there you go you know think
1:02:29
think of how 25 lb Pike tastes much better than a 5B P how it applies to the
1:02:34
program we did Dean helped me with this one a few a few episodes ago about the mislabeling of of fish right that's
1:02:41
where Size Matters right when you can get a a 40 lb striper and cut it up into pieces and sell it as I don't know
1:02:47
orange ruffy or Chan sea bass which which is very similar to it yeah I can
1:02:54
understand that I can understand it for sure sure all right so so we're we're now going to see if we can use the law
1:03:03
to your advantage by signing as many people as you can to this petition and lawsuit actually uh and and then take
1:03:11
that to Ottawa and see if it moves the needle well so what we did is yeah we
1:03:16
are right now investigating um whether or not we could injunctive relief
1:03:22
against the DFO where we have a firm that we've contacted who thankfully one
1:03:29
of the very few lawyers that is not a salmon angler and right too that's right
1:03:35
I never even thought of that the whole legal system would be the judges and everybody else are all members of these
1:03:41
fancy clubs and so it's it's like you know it's like going against the freaking like going against Putin in
1:03:49
Russia with the freaking Free Press and U so we were able to do that he
1:03:54
certainly gave us some time they come back uh the first section will be about $7,500 which is basically just to
1:04:01
discover if we can get injunctive relief what that looks like can they make policy does the minister have any
1:04:08
obligations that sort of thing um what you need what you need to do is find uh
1:04:14
an attorney a good attorney who loves bass fishing or better yet get one of
1:04:21
these guys take him out bass fishing for a day or two convert him and then get him to work pro bono I I have I have a
1:04:29
great guy that's actually out of Hamilton uh that lives from here that's from here and uh he's a b tournament
1:04:36
bass angler oh great so he suggested that he can help at least as much as he
1:04:41
can and so that's the guy I've been dealing with um and so we have I don't
1:04:46
know if you saw the telegraph Journal um thing some other guy decided he's going to sue DFO for not taking enough basss
1:04:53
yeah I I read that which which is you know like ridiculous and that guy's not even from the you know he's from Nova
1:05:00
Scotia by the way can we just stop for a minute because I I I I'm thinking if somebody just jumped in on this from
1:05:06
another planet and they're saying okay what are you guys griping about what are you because I read that that you know
1:05:12
this is an evasive species after all who was not in the Miri uh and and and then
1:05:18
we let it in and now it's destroyed the local fishery and there's nothing further from the truth in that and I
1:05:24
want to dispel that once and for all strip bass on the Miri have been there if not since the
1:05:32
beginning of time pretty damn close same amount of time as the same exactly so
1:05:37
this is not an invasive species let's get that on the table make it perfectly
1:05:43
clear for anybody who does not understand that this is a native fish
1:05:49
and a group of people have taken it upon themselves to annihilate the entire gene pool of
1:05:56
this fish in the miror mai yeah on the basis that without science or no as you
1:06:02
say there is science to prove it wrong yeah without the science that says this is first of all even if there was
1:06:09
science there it's a native fish how can you step in and eradicate a native fish because another species is not doing
1:06:15
well that part just doesn't make sense to me at all and I said this to you I said this to the Sam guys why don't we
1:06:21
put a net across the river up in Sunny corner wait till the keep all the power
1:06:27
up there till the bass are done spawning and let them leave and then take the net
1:06:32
out let them go like is it that hard to that's not that ridiculous that's not
1:06:37
that ridiculous of a notion you know it's pretty you saw onny corner like it's only about 100 yards
1:06:43
across like you know what I mean like I mean we could literally do it like this is what I said I had a youal like you
1:06:49
know because they contacted the city of Marmi to try and get me in trouble because I'm fighting the salmon or
1:06:54
whatever and right because they trying to get me fired from the Striper Cup or whatever
1:06:59
so I just said look I'll meet with you let's talk about it because I mean I think salmon need to survive so but I
1:07:06
just don't agree that the way they're going about it is the way that it's going to have any impact now we we need
1:07:13
to get like so that's why I said why don't we just put a net across a barrier and just stop them all from coming down
1:07:19
till this after you know June 4th or 5ifth the river gets evacuated and the there's no strip bass
1:07:26
in the river interesting would it that would be really interesting I love that idea
1:07:31
actually I wonder if it's physically like possible whether it would work I
1:07:37
mean it sounds ridiculous but boy wouldn't that be a great solution to a problem well even even if you have a
1:07:43
trap net you truck them down put them in the ocean yeah like they're talking about there's
1:07:49
only you know 10,000 like what you know what's the number like so if if it's you
1:07:56
know it protects the species you're going to kill another species I mean I think it was Gordon prer actually that said you know gave me that that no one's
1:08:02
going to agree that killing one species over another is a successful Management program just never gonna happen and so
1:08:10
you know I'm I'm an agree with that like I said you know it's like the St John River I said we got 31 Salmon well we
1:08:16
don't do any work on the St John River to manage bass musky anything and yet we should be managing the St John River for
1:08:23
what we have and will have not for what we used to have and it's very similar white tail deer pushed the Caribou out
1:08:29
of New Brunswick white tail in New Brunswick is an invasive species okay but we manage them we don't we're not
1:08:36
planting Caribou everywhere right so we've had to adapt to the changes in the
1:08:42
world I think Caribou needs Ed Atlantic Caribou Federation maybe there's an
1:08:49
offshoot there maybe there's an offshoot sometimes you have to evolve you know maybe they need to go Target Carib I
1:08:56
um but all Southern rivers are like this every Southern River I don't care where it is the whole it's everything is nor
1:09:02
you know temperatures coming farther up farther up we got white we got um great
1:09:07
white sharks in New Jersey this year they had Mahi Mah we we we saw actually
1:09:15
we had somebody on the show somebody on the program uh Joe surelly has invited us down at anytime we want to go and
1:09:21
have some the best in his opinion best may my fishing on the planet is happening right now in in in in Jersey
1:09:30
it's well if you want to you should make you guys should get Steve Delany on here you know Steve you guys fish with him
1:09:36
and everything he just a world of wealth information a great guy and I've tried to get him kind of to help out with the
1:09:42
strip bass Association but he's a busy guy but he provides a lot of information and and you know that guy like I I say
1:09:49
to him I just frustrated like come on Steve you gota like we got to do this for your kids like he's got young kids
1:09:54
and I'm we we need to protect this it's or do the best we possibly G can with
1:10:00
what God gave us to work with like this we can't stop climate change maybe we can make some adjustments I'm not sure
1:10:07
but at the end of the day um change is coming and I'm a businessman I've been
1:10:14
in the same company for 37 years and the number one thing in business is to manage change and those who can manage
1:10:21
change the best are the most successful companies in the world that's where Simpson Sears where' they go Hudson Bay
1:10:27
they didn't manage change so even in Fisheries government managing change
1:10:33
like Trump managing change yeah whether it's good or B or whatever we still have
1:10:39
to manage that change good point am I going to make the assumption that you have invited the
1:10:47
representatives from the Federation to sit at a table with you and well we do
1:10:54
that at the stakeholders meeting so I haven't invited them and and what's the net result of those
1:11:00
discussions well the net result was a call of The Atlantics of the straight
1:11:05
pass what was the argument there had to be a debate back and forth there's say as Alan Cur who's the director ahead of
1:11:12
the rivers Institute just said that they'll be that if they don't do something it's going to make the it's
1:11:18
going to make the salmon extinct that he just put that in the article that I shared and I got on John chilac that the
1:11:25
the the journalist and I said listen I go you just quoted a guy that's bought and paid for by the Canadian ERS
1:11:33
Institute who was donated a $20 million house by the urban group like but but
1:11:39
I'm but but you must have science there that also can speak to that issue oh
1:11:46
they do they they do Scott Douglas those guys they're there I asked the question they give me the they give me the answer
1:11:53
and the do a roundabout uh to the minister to make a
1:11:58
political decision this this reference points for the uh the strip bass lower
1:12:04
and upper level uh was a committee that was to be developed they they to get
1:12:10
together and they all were supposed to go on there as non-biased uh committee members for which I was one in the very
1:12:16
first committee meeting they admitted that they got together before the meeting and already made up their mind
1:12:22
and I asked gfo to have them thrown from the committee because we promised when we joined the committee with a
1:12:28
subcommittee to be non-biased which is what I was doing I didn't get together with all the bass guys and come up with
1:12:33
the decision and but the S guys had all got together and already said that this is wrong and so they shut this committee
1:12:41
down right away it's still supposed to be going it's supposed to be part of the precautionary approach the fishery
1:12:47
management that the framework that DFO lives by under policy and that's the
1:12:53
basis for why I want to go legal because they're not following their own mandates how did you find that out how did you
1:12:59
how did you guys find out they did that because I asked like when I was in the committee meeting I said well you guys
1:13:05
must have got together of course we did hello and I'm like so me being the
1:13:12
quiet Mouse I am I said well hold it so you guys have circumvented the actual
1:13:18
committee you were invited and agreed to be nonpartisan on I I vote that we need to get them off the committee and since
1:13:25
then there's never been a meeting it's been on hold and I asked the director at the last January meeting if they were
1:13:31
going to bring that up again and they just they're not they're not meeting in fact I got on the other committee for
1:13:37
the St John River and that committee has been completely shut down because I just I ask good questions I'm not a sign I'm
1:13:45
just excuse me sir I have a small question you are [ __ ] disturbers is what you are I love this guy that's what
1:13:52
that's what your labeled as and in this case and in this case I think the
1:13:58
Atlantic stripe bass needs somebody on their team that is willing to get the uniform dirty because it sounds like
1:14:05
we're we're lacking in that for example I mentioned I mentioned scientific proof why do we not have the scientific
1:14:13
Community getting together that has I'm sure documented studies from the river
1:14:21
that would dispel any myth at all that are I've got a I've got a letter
1:14:28
signed by five phds that was sent to DFO um and I have you know we have the strip
1:14:33
pass research team and we have the KD University and these folks you've all met you got to remember too that they're
1:14:39
in a precarious position because where do you think the research dollars all come from the government well it's got
1:14:46
to be somebody that's not dependent on that I mean there's got to be a scientist Dean put out a call to Dr Cook
1:14:54
will you please we see if we can get him involved in this that's what we need we need a we need a Dr Cook to get involved
1:15:00
somebody with a big reputation in the business that can can once and for all stand up and is not afraid to stand up
1:15:07
and say hey hey hey based on science here are the facts and that's my
1:15:13
argument an I I don't argue that I know more science than them I just want if Doctor Avery says to me Jeff we can take
1:15:22
100,000 175,000 fish out of the school it'll be no problem good yep you're good but when he
1:15:29
says it might destroy it in three years yeah we had I'm not good anymore yeah did we not have him on the show
1:15:36
Dean was on here he he just oh blew us away with the information he had that
1:15:41
was let's I like I sit you know at the Striper Cup I get to stand on Shore with that guy and I'm just I'm just be
1:15:48
because I just I'm selfish I want to know more about the my Quarry than I can shake a stick at right and so they you
1:15:55
know I just keep asking him questions I took a fish and I say he's not much of a fisherman but he sure knows about the fish I know how to catch up so between
1:16:02
the two of us we had a great day of fishing so those guys but we need that and and
1:16:08
the shows and I appreciate you guys having me on I appreciate you bringing the spotlight to this because it's it's
1:16:15
conversations like this that maybe we'll get shake the trees and maybe there is a
1:16:20
young PhD student that wants to get involved I tried to find a lawyer because I said when we Sue DFO you are
1:16:28
going to be a famous lawyer right so what you know so a lot of oh man I don't
1:16:33
want to get in that the judge that I got the next week he's going up to the salmon fish in the rest of and I can't
1:16:39
go here because the guy runs our firm owns a salmon Lodge up in the marry machine yeah that's so true like oh my
1:16:45
God I'm so so I I just like oh so I had to go out of Province that's what I did I I immediately said who do I know that
1:16:53
wouldn't be connected in that and that was Robbie Hooper from Hooper law in Hamilton and I Rob would you give me a
1:17:00
hand or just guide me a little bit and uh he was very gracious and and said look Jeff I I'll dig into it a little
1:17:07
bit and he did and he got his uh research uh buddy that works for him and
1:17:12
he goes look you know it's going to cost some money like it's going to cost a bit of money and I I appreciate that so
1:17:18
that's where we are and you know I don't know we got a pretty good group is there
1:17:24
an oper opportunity to raise some funds here is that what I'm hearing well that's yeah that's what that's what
1:17:29
we're going to this we're going to try and do we um the strip bass Association is based out of Nova Scotia and we're
1:17:36
just trying to get the chapters we have one for no maymi all lined up we rais $5,000 in the mar machine Striper Cup
1:17:43
for that chapter so we had a check ready to be signed as soon as they get the bank account and all that things
1:17:50
together we got another fellow in PEI is doing exactly the same thing as another chapter Nova Scotia and um as well as
1:17:57
the fell in Quebec so once the paperwork's done and we're maybe a week away from finishing that um then we're
1:18:04
going to start a a fundraising uh campaign and we're also going to be
1:18:09
applying all those different user group stakeholder group are goingon to apply for a seat at the table for the
1:18:14
recreational Committee in January of course instead of having 40 salmon guys
1:18:19
and Me Maybe we can have 40 salmon guys and six striper guys so at least somebody else can talk while I'm doing
1:18:25
the Rope dop exactly uh keep us informed on that my
1:18:32
friend when you're ready for that maybe uh we can get you back on the program and see if we can't drum up some support
1:18:38
uh from the audience uh in the meantime uh if uh somebody listening maybe is in
1:18:44
a legal position to help or maybe is in maybe has information that might help uh
1:18:51
how can they get a hold of you where can they reach out you know just grab me on Facebook or just my my cell phone number
1:18:58
hasn't changed since they invented cell phones and so it's the same cell phone number I'm happity reach me on Facebook
1:19:04
get me the marchine Striper Cup we got message us there uh we got a great group and and and these guys are coming out of
1:19:10
the wood work I got and the best part is and you guys will appreciate this I got some young Lads that uh have don't you
1:19:17
know are donating time ni and and really that's what we need we need to be able to hand that torch um of this to
1:19:25
somebody else that that that that can help I'll keep helping as long as God willing I I'm around to do it um I'm a
1:19:32
couple years away from retirement but uh when that happens then I imagine it'll be a full-time job by then I should be
1:19:38
able to make at least $1,000 dollar a year with their Ser striber stuff hey keep up the good work buddy you're doing
1:19:43
well let me know how that works out for you says he's never retired
1:19:50
yet uh Jeff thank you very much as usual if there's uh anything can do uh uh you
1:19:55
know uh you can reach out to us and uh we certainly have a soft spot in our heart uh for not just the strike bass on
1:20:03
the miror Machi but the mirror Machi itself whether whether it's it's Atlantic salmon or anything else that
1:20:10
it's in the swim um we uh it's become our home away from home in terms of
1:20:15
Fisheries we absolutely love it a tremendous history tremendous story and
1:20:21
just to be standing on the banks of the Mir machine even if you don't fish you can just look out over that water man
1:20:26
you can smell the history you can smell the uh the richness of the resource you
1:20:32
can all that wonderful stuff that unfortunately a lot of people haven't had a chance to experience so when they
1:20:37
hear people like you with so much passion about it they have to understand it comes honestly because to live in
1:20:44
that area work and play in that area is truly a gift and uh you have it in Spades my friend yeah well I'd like to
1:20:51
really thank you guys and the whole fishing Canada team you guys have been here every time we ask for help and uh
1:20:56
we really appreciate it it shows the 40 years I guess next year's 40 years for you guys you know so look you know
1:21:04
that's great and uh I really appreciate that support because it can be a lonely
1:21:09
fight sometimes here behind the keyboard you're never alone buddy you're we're with you buddy all right take care see
1:21:15
you boys uh Jeff Wilson uh angler extraordinaire uh Sportsman extraordinaire uh co-founder of coer
1:21:23
Striper Cup I mean caretaker of the outdoors I mean everything you want to he's a good guy
1:21:29
to have on your side that's for sure wonderful gentlemen without a doubt listen he's got his hands full because
1:21:35
the you know I don't battle man I don't want to say this but the Atlantic s of
1:21:40
federation is probably in the top five uh Wildlife associations in terms of
1:21:48
organization Financial backing etc etc etc so it's a tough fight it's like me
1:21:53
getting in the ring with Alex Pereira I put money on you I put money on you
1:21:59
you're stuffing a gun in my back of my shorts aren't you that's the only way I'm going to take down Alex it's it's going to be a tough fight
1:22:06
and and um they are so well organized that's the
1:22:12
scary part about well yeah I mean let's think about it what he said their lawyers and judges and everybody they they will have everything dialed in as
1:22:18
best they can so it be you know there is something though to be said about
1:22:24
fishing for Atlantic salmon on places like the Mir mchi which are one of the
1:22:30
legendary Atlantic salmon playgrounds there is something to be said about being out there with a fly rod and and
1:22:37
first thing in the morning and that bend and it's funny that we're we're not going against the Atlantic salmon
1:22:43
fishing they're going against strip bass fishing right you know what I mean so there's a big difference in that right so because you're right that's that's
1:22:49
part of the the heritage of fishing right there the East Coast or Canadians in general I mean it's such a a nice
1:22:55
thoughts nice you know uh picture to be painted take that away from somebody I
1:23:01
can see why somebody would you know maybe maybe a little ill informed maybe I don't know but I can see why somebody
1:23:06
would want to defend that of course right because uh it is a pretty special place in the world and uh anyways it'd
1:23:14
be interesting to see how this whole thing it's yeah it's shapes up it's not might not be great but obviously from
1:23:21
our standpoint if you haven't already noticed uh we are we are so dead set against tampering with anything that
1:23:28
nature has put in our way in terms of wildlife uh we uh think that the salmon
1:23:36
and bass should be able to coexist maybe that's foolish maybe that's a little bit
1:23:41
of a you know romantic approach to to the whole thing but uh we think they
1:23:47
should all be able to do their thing without human interference but maybe we do interfere when we go down there and
1:23:53
fish them who knows you know anyway true uh that are it I want to thank everybody
1:23:59
oh by the way I have to remind folks of course Boxing Day 25% on everything I'm told 25% off on
1:24:07
everything in the store for Boxing Day only I'm not sure if there are any other
1:24:13

1:24:19

1:24:27

1:26:19
it's not on at least we going to special thanks J that good that is there I don't want to
1:26:26
call anybody out in this but I wanted to go back just say thanks to J&B cycle in case that's over for their uh support
1:26:32
you know what I mean and they will have some more coming down the line they have some really cool ones have we got is the boat up there by
1:26:40
any chance the the Princecraft boat motor trailer is that we're still waiting on it to be powered oh okay all
1:26:46
right but it's it should be as we speak like days from now it should be available I wonder if the uh the the
1:26:52
question or the comment that was in here the Liv scope comment on earlier I wonder if that's the unit he bought or if he bought a boat unit that's a
1:26:58
question he that is something we should find out next time find out he upped his game pretty
1:27:03
good all right that are it folks we've milked this puppy for all it's worth on behalf of the entire Outdoor Journal
1:27:10
Radio podcast team VBA who's yawning over there we got to you know what we got to do we got to get him something to
1:27:17
do during these long podcast he's listening to something else that's what he's doing I know I know but he's doing
1:27:23
something else's listening to news or something all right maybe we should get plugged into whatever he's listening to
1:27:29
maybe that would help us maybe maybe we need help I got a feeling it's in Ukrainian number one so that would
1:27:35
really and that's in one of our ears then you or me in the other ear we're hurting un us buddy uh Nick who almost
1:27:42
