0:04
good one buddy I saw a bit of bit of cup
0:07
whoa yes yeah got one big swallos big
0:10
walleye big per oh it's crazy oh that is
0:16
cool got you got one it's got to be a
0:19
small M there ladies and gentlemen
0:21
that's how deadly the Ned rig is why
0:23
does it fuel a little bigger oh
0:26
whoo okay Angelo that's that was pretty
0:31
the fish in Canada show brought to you
0:33
in part by yui fishing lures fish the
0:38
best Mercury o fors go
0:42
boldly and Outdoor Canada Canada's only
0:45
National fishing and hunting
0:57
magazine hi everyone and welcome welcome
1:00
to this week's fishing Canada Adventure
1:02
today we're traveling to the extreme
1:05
Northwest portion of Ontario apply named
1:08
Sunset country a mere 20 some OD hour
1:12
drive from fishing Canada headquarters
1:14
yeah that's all it's a piece of
1:16
cake I don't know who you're trying to
1:19
kid it's one Beast of a drive however if
1:22
you're looking to put yourself in one of
1:23
the best all around fishing areas in not
1:25
only the province not only all of Canada
1:28
but arguably in the entire world
1:32
deal it's got a species list that reads
1:35
like the who's who of North American
1:37
game Fish walleye musky northern pike
1:41
Smallmouth and largemouth bass leg trout
1:44
speckle trout white fish crappy and a
1:47
whole lot more Sunset country in
1:50
Northwestern Ontario has one of the most
1:52
diverse Fisheries you'll ever
1:54
find on this trip we're traveling to the
1:56
legendary Lake of the Woods also known
1:58
as LW or simply Woods this massive body
2:02
of water is over 70 Mi long as well as
2:04
70 Mi wide but because it contains more
2:09
14552 islands all of which are in its
2:11
northern reaches you never seem to be
2:13
far from Shore by the way did I tell you
2:16
it has over 65,000 Mi of Shoreline now
2:19
you heard me refer to this as an
2:21
adventure well that's because before the
2:24
fishing even starts we've got a 20m boat
2:27
ride through an endless array of chance
2:30
and Islands it truly is some of the most
2:32
spectacular scenery you'll ever
2:34
encounter and that's just to get to the
2:37
cabin this in the middle of nowhere
2:39
cabin called Uncle Mark's Outpost is
2:41
partially owned by Canadian YouTube
2:43
fishing sensation J seens Jay and his
2:46
business partners have put a lot of
2:47
thought and hard work into this place
2:57
shows the makings of this trip started
2:59
way back in April of 2023 when Jade
3:02
joined us on an episode of our Outdoor
3:04
Journal Radio podcast to discuss the
3:06
fishing lodge and outpost
3:09
business so I make fishing videos for a
3:11
living put them on YouTube it's a pretty
3:13
it's a pretty wild thing because I grew
3:15
up watching the fishing Canada show
3:17
every Saturday Sunday morning my buddies
3:19
Spencer and Scott they uh they told me
3:21
they had bought a piece of property on
3:22
Lake of the Woods and they're like oh
3:23
Jay you should you should join in on it
3:25
you should be part of this and I wasn't
3:27
that interested till I found out where
3:28
it was on the lake and me being a
3:30
fisherman I was like this is in a very
3:32
fishy area Uncle Mark he's just uh he's
3:35
an uncle to everyone I mean I called him
3:37
Uncle Mark but then people that were not
3:38
related to him at all started calling
3:40
him Uncle Mark and as we were
3:42
brainstorming what to call this Outpost
3:44
it it was pretty clear cuz no one spent
3:46
as much time or sacrificed as much his
3:48
hands have touched every part of this
3:50
cabin I've been to a lot of places and I
3:51
I I like to think that this took kind of
3:53
my favorite parts of all of them and
3:54
combined it um down to the detail of we
3:57
have fishing kayaks and canoes so if you
3:59
don't own a boat we can shuttle you down
4:01
here and you can go fishing you don't
4:03
have to go far either we saw some
4:05
muskies spawning off the dock this
4:06
spring and it's uh it's a pretty lively
4:09
place so now we have Jay's fantastic
4:11
accommodations booked plus a bunch of
4:13
his fishing Intel what more could we ask
4:16
for well how about some local Knowledge
4:19
from the one and only Mr gour piser aka
4:21
the dock gourd lives in canora on the
4:24
shores of Lake of the Woods and has
4:26
always had his finger on the pulse of
4:28
the lotw fishery now aside from some
4:31
great fishing Intel gourd let us in on a
4:34
very concerning piece of news it's an
4:37
invasive species called The Rusty
4:39
crayfish and it's got a voracious
4:41
appetite for pretty much anything that
4:44
way good one buddy I saw a bit of bit of
4:48
who yes yeah one big spbl big walleye
4:57
small the rusty CR fish we started
5:00
seeing them in the late 1980s maybe mid
5:04
80s and they came in through the Rainy
5:07
River system at the South End of the
5:09
lake and now they're all the way up the
5:11
lake and they've moved West people say
5:14
likely introduced by Anglers and
5:17
personally I don't buy that Cu uh for
5:20
all the years I've fished in Ontario I
5:23
have never seen anyone ever fish with
5:25
crayfish as bait so I think Anglers get
5:28
a bit of a wrap there I think they have
5:31
naturally progressed from native areas
5:34
in the US Birds there's a whole pile of
5:38
things that could introduce them and
5:39
we've just seen them continue to to
5:41
migrate and what they do is they
5:44
actually kill and have killed and and
5:47
decimated uh the natural crayfish
5:50
population in the Lake of the Woods so
5:52
virtually all we're left with are these
5:55
invasive aggressive robust Rusty
5:58
crayfish Lake of the Woods used to be
6:00
famous for the we had magnificent
6:03
cabbage weed beds uh uh coontail beds
6:06
what the rties do is they mow it down
6:08
they're not mowing it down as much to
6:10
eat they're mowing it down because it
6:13
removes all the obstructions and now we
6:15
can prey on the native doile uh crayfish
6:19
in the lake if we keep a couple walleye
6:21
for sure lunch our Live Well is full of
6:23
crayfish parts so everything is eating
6:26
them invasives are invasives and they're
6:33
good armed with lots of info on the fish
6:35
and the crayfish Invasion along with
6:37
some hotpots from both Jay and gourd we
6:39
can now get on with the fishing the
6:42
first day of most of our fishing Canada
6:44
shoots pretty much always begin the same
6:45
way a cup of coffee on the boat at
6:47
Dockside surrounded by scattered fishing
6:52
boxes during this state of what could be
6:55
deemed disarray Pete and I will talk
7:00
water and weather conditions and bait
7:02
preferences that will allow us to best
7:04
match the hatch or go completely Rogue
7:08
and do the total opposite however since
7:11
we now know about the ridiculous amount
7:13
of crayfish in this Lake well that
7:17
influence with our dock talk completed
7:20
we now head out on the water next is all
7:22
about experimentation this used to mean
7:24
Days full of casting jigging trolling
7:27
rigging running and gunning and so on
7:30
nowadays we pretty much rely on our
7:32
Electronics to put us in the right Zone
7:35
but in all honesty sometimes even when
7:38
you find a motherload of fish there's
7:41
still that period of inactivity when
7:43
they just won't bite you can see them
7:47
but you just can't catch them it all
7:50
boils down to finding either Optimum
7:52
structure cover Bait fish or game fish
7:55
and then working hard at hooking into
7:56
something no matter what the species
8:02
got him you got one not big though let's
8:04
see what he is it's got to be a
8:06
smallmouth or something cuz I I can feel
8:07
some weight oh it's a big perch giant
8:11
girl that's huge look at that thing oh
8:13
my God on a Ed rig Netty perch that's oh
8:17
if you were keeping perch buddy can you
8:19
imagine get getting yourself a Shor
8:21
lunch of those if we get a few more of
8:22
them we'll start keeping them a little
8:24
feet of them that's a big perch I'd
8:26
prefer that over Walley to be honest
8:28
with you that fishous nice buddy on a n
8:32
rig you are lucky yes very lucky
8:35
today wow yeah that's got to be it
8:37
that's what was hitting me for sure I'll
8:44
yeah got going buddy I saw a bit of bit
8:48
of whoa oh net net material yeah oh for
8:50
sure I saw a bit of color there not oh
8:54
big no big smallmouth yeah chunky chunky
8:57
little fell get over here
9:00
nice okay first hard Bait fish good
9:04
that's that new jerk bait that's the
9:05
Mikey bur Pike bler right there that the
9:07
one yeah that's the one he loves it yeah
9:09
no just the Yi bait but there's a name
9:11
for it Pete right now we're not sure
9:13
what it is cuz a buddy of ours Mikey
9:16
burus turned us onto it he said hey you
9:18
guys are doing Yi stuff you should look
9:25
fish okay yeah up in the shallows too
9:28
was it yeah getting later in today might
9:30
be perfect time to switch our tactic
9:32
yeah I'd like to get a jerk bait bike
9:34
going my God fun wouldn't that be the
9:40
best well well now we'll know how big
9:44
mhm wal oh w-e yeah that's what we saw
9:48
that's exactly what it was exactly come
9:51
on buddy exactly what it
9:56
Walley boy he he bit so l l in you saw
10:00
that I lost I saw him I saw him biting
10:03
and then I didn't even I just left the
10:05
the Ned right on the bottom and he just
10:07
he picked it up here we go little guy
10:10
scar it up sure lunch I don't know what
10:13
the size limit is here we have to check
10:15
that out before we start keeping them
10:17
too right that's true
10:25
too that's cool it is NE way they I came
10:29
back up to the front just in time to
10:31
watch that to watch the
10:34
show little guy maybe a per again little
10:37
we Walley we just watch him up grab the
10:39
N rig and swim back let's talk about
10:41
that for a moment so we spend most of
10:43
our time now looking as opposed to
10:44
fishing people look at that and say well
10:47
you know fishing has changed you guys
10:48
aren't really fishing anymore the whole
10:51
game has changed and and I go back to
10:53
what I've always said about fishing
10:55
fishing means different things to
10:56
different folks everybody gets something
10:59
different successful fishing means some
11:01
days you go out get one fish you had a
11:03
great day it was successful some days
11:04
you go out and you get a million fish
11:05
sometimes you get small ones big ones
11:07
sometimes you troll for sometimes you
11:09
cast now with this new technology that
11:12
that's changed even further so I just
11:15
want to throw that out there because
11:17
there is that commentary being bantered
11:20
about that this type of Technology yeah
11:23
has changed it completely and it's not
11:25
fair or it's not fishing anymore for us
11:28
it's what Now call fishing yeah and I'll
11:30
tell you something but Ang just says not
11:33
fair we've thrown to 100 fish today and
11:35
we caught four of them exactly exactly
11:39
you don't catch them all you do not
11:40
catch them all I don't care what they
11:41
say now we're hearing more and more that
11:44
this type of technology has changed the
11:46
game to the point where it's not fair
11:48
and I just felt compelled to tools it's
11:50
a tool for us you go roofers used to use
11:54
hammers all the time it's not fair well
11:56
that's not fair they they don't use the
11:58
hammer any for efficiency
12:03
right yes yeah got one oh that is cool
12:07
why does it feel a little bigger oh
12:09
wo right there ladies and gentlemen
12:12
that's how deadly the Ned rig
12:18
is punch yes yeah got one you got one
12:23
yeah little wee Walley maybe or another
12:27
perch look at the size of these things
12:32
ridiculous I had no idea L of the woods
12:35
had giant yellows in here too buddy wow
12:38
but right there is delicious that is
12:41
like the ultimate pretty fish too they
12:43
are neat orange fins you see the ones
12:45
over in Europe yeah they're about 3 lb
12:48
like 3 4 lbs for those things a lot of
12:51
them okay I think you're going to give a
12:53
right home back to the out cabin and you
12:56
and a few more if we can get them tin in
12:59
the cheek there little greenish Tins in
13:02
there neat what a fat fish look at them
13:06
that is a cool looking fish okay buddy
13:09
let's go for a boat ride although we
13:11
were catching the odd fish here and
13:13
there our fish finder was showing us way
13:15
more inactive fish than feeders it was
13:18
also showing us some odd signals on the
13:21
bottom that intrigued us so we set our
13:24
underwater camera down to try and ID
13:26
what we were seeing on the screen along
13:28
every hump and flat set hundreds of
13:30
Rusty crayfish slowly making their way
13:32
like zombies toward our camera
13:34
completely unfaced by the bass and
13:36
walleye overhead honestly it was like a
13:39
scene from The Walking
13:43
Dead He's got one claw out oh see that
13:47
is cool so there's what we're dealing
13:50
with down there that's the red the rusty
13:52
on his back yeah look at that the Red
13:53
Claws on him look at that he's hanging
13:56
out bit of purple Hue to it eh he's
13:58
hanging out for dear life he's not done
13:59
yet tail flipping it's almost Lobster
14:03
budy easy look at him he's trying to get
14:07
me back of course he is that's his
14:08
defense he won't and he won't let go of
14:09
that uh net well we think he was
14:12
attacking he might have been trying to
14:13
make love to it w it can still be an
14:16
attack you never know what goes on down
14:18
there wow and the red back that's
14:22
cool well between Doc's Talk Plus her
14:26
underwater footage the inevitable just
14:29
had to happen that's Lobster that's surf
14:31
and turf material right there ladies and
14:33
gentlemen that's how deadly the Ned rig
14:36
is he's going to fall off let him grab a
14:39
hole again I must say it's pretty rare
14:42
to bring one craw to the boat with rod
14:44
and reel let load too no wonder the fish
14:48
AR biting they are stuffed that's a lot
14:52
crayfish time to move on too many
14:55
crayfish and not enough active walleye
14:57
or smallies next spot a big extending
15:00
underwater point off an
15:05
island mly nice nice look at you okay
15:09
lock her up there's a few of them come
15:12
here buddy you got to love a lake though
15:15
where you can come in to get oh my God
15:17
big spab big walleye big perch oh it's
15:22
crazy this is I to me I've always said
15:26
this may be the best all around fishing
15:28
freshwater lake in the
15:31
world the weather during this trip to
15:33
lotw is very typical of most of our
15:37
shoots nowadays and that's all over the
15:40
place vaa our Ukrainian cameraman made a
15:43
very interesting observation when he
15:45
first arrived in Canada last spring he
15:48
said and I quote Canadian Seasons give
15:52
warning and he's absolutely right the
15:55
last days of August canol those Sahara
15:57
likee heat waves which soon get give way
15:58
to frigid fall days in a blink of the
16:01
eye trading shorts for long johns and
16:03
t-shirts for hoodies is now common
16:05
practice he's jumped like he was that
16:07
big sounded sounded good but a little
16:10
smly on the ooui a kid look at you boy
16:14
there's a ton of these up here ton of
16:17
them look at how fat every fish we've
16:18
got is they're just you imagine that if
16:21
that was like a regular size 19 iner oh
16:30
there inch tiny whatever it is sh lunch
16:34
that's too small for Shore lunch I think
16:36
oh look oh wow so that
16:39
soer cool that is cool so this guy looks
16:43
just like a walleye but look at the
16:45
coloration in this fish these blotches
16:48
like that the spots all over the fins
16:51
like that still got that walleye eye but
16:53
look at here on the tail there's no
16:55
white spot on the bottom of the tail
16:57
I've fish a lot in the north and I have
16:59
hardly caught too many so now that's a
17:00
tiny one still but they don't get giant
17:02
like walleye if you got a 3 lb soer you
17:04
have a big one see you
17:16
buddy this hot spot is one of many that
17:19
we found on Lake of the Woods in
17:20
Northwestern Ontario the way point on
17:23
your screen will get you right there we
17:25
say one of many hot spots because Lake
17:27
of the Woods is arguably the best
17:29
freshwater multispecies lake in all of
17:32
Canada and that says a lot for this body
17:34
of water expect the catch both walleye
17:37
and smallmouth bass and don't be
17:39
surprised if an aggressive Pike takes a
17:41
shot at your presentation the typical
17:43
jig and some kind of plastic will always
17:45
work but don't neglect suspending jerk
17:48
baits or even deep diving crankbaits for
17:51
more hot spots like this one check out
18:03
you got kid I got one
18:07
too why does it feel a little bigger oh
18:24
whoo what we got you got kid I got one
18:27
too got an eater I think Bud yeah no
18:31
not well he's tight he's tight see what
18:35
this guy does he's tight what do you got
18:37
oh the sh is don't get off
18:44
clone I think they're small
18:46
eh wow they're just on the edge but
18:50
we're going to keep just a bit bigger
18:51
than that that's just that's gu close
18:54
but we're both the same jeez we're
18:57
throwing away the best food in the oh I
18:58
know that's good eating for sure we'll
19:01
go one inch longer so we got a school of
19:03
30 30 of these up below us and then some
19:05
smaller we don't see any
19:13
bigger that might be a better one I
19:15
think it's you know the way you hit it
19:17
could could be a SMY SMY yeah little
19:20
bigger SMY get out of the way yeah just
19:23
maybe let's have a peek there's a
19:25
walleye for sure that's got to be eater
19:28
doesn't I that's an eater that's one we
19:32
eater I got to get him in the boat first
19:34
yeah true enough he's not on the plate
19:38
no that's an eater that's it right there
19:41
that's oh yeah yeah perfect that's on
19:45
the high side of eating tonight we
19:47
eat be crazy there you go look at
19:50
they're just loaded in here let me put
19:55
Well the tiny this is the smallest one
20:03
lucky come on be be a little bigger
20:05
please why does it feel a little bigger
20:11
Angelo is he yes I got
20:17
him it's not bad oh there you go we'll
20:19
take that we will take
20:23
that I chucked it out in about 20 ft of
20:25
water and 20 deep okay plus water that's
20:32
yeah the old gold head
20:35
Ned there beautiful little walleye not
20:38
bad look at this show the camera this
20:42
neat on this fin there don't know if
20:45
they're leeches looks like a leech yeah
20:49
yeah looks like they're two little
20:51
leeches something like that yeah weird
20:54
eh at the Orange on his fins too okay
21:03
you although we didn't catch a 30-in
21:06
walleye or a 5 lb SMY our trip to Uncle
21:09
Mark's Outpost was an outstanding one
21:12
with our Live Well full of perfect eater
21:15
size walleye it fueled a sure dinner for
21:18
the ages with our gracious host Jay
21:21
Seamans and the now famous and always
21:26
Mark as you can probably tell and and I
21:29
highly recommend Uncle Mark's Outpost as
21:31
more than just a fantastic fishing
21:32
destination it's a Wilderness Paradise
21:35
that will pamper you beyond words one of
21:37
the nicest facilities we've ever visited
21:40
this is a bucket Lister for
21:44
