Ang and Pete head into Algoma's Buck Lake Wilderness Lodge for a well deserved "boys getaway". Their plan is to find, then catch, then fillet then fry and finally eat the most delicious food that mother nature can provide; WALLEYE! But in order to do so, they have to deal with brutal weather and a school of bait stealing Northern Pike getting in the way of their Northern Ontario Shore Lunch!

First started by brothers Angelo and Reno Viola in 1986, The Fish’n Canada Show has been on the air for over 30 years. Today, Angelo is joined by lifelong fishing buddy, Peter Bowman, and the pair continue to travel across Canada educating anglers using the experience they’ve gained over the years

this week's fishing canada episode takes
1:01
us to buck lake an anglers paradise
1:03
located in beautiful algoma country
1:05
northern ontario
1:07
ange and i will be stationed at the
1:08
bingwood cabins an extension of buck
1:10
lake wilderness lodges and outposts
1:12
situated on the mouth of the buck river
1:14
this place is a beacon that calls
1:16
anglers to satisfy their fishing
1:17
appetites with its multi-species
1:19
smorgasbord
1:21
this remote fishing destination is
1:23
accessible only by floatplane the
1:26
15-minute flight from the nearby town of
1:28
hornpayne provides us with views of
1:30
far-reaching boreal forests and
1:32
sparkling lakes and rivers
1:39
as soon as the floats touch down we know
1:40
we're sitting atop a veritable fishing
1:42
gold mine and it's algoma gold we're
1:44
after
1:47
once we arrive at our cabin pete and i
1:49
are provided with a map marked with
1:51
spots where trophy fish are hooked
1:53
regularly but for this trip we've got
1:56
something different in mind
1:58
well what we're really doing in this
2:00
trip angie and i we're just
2:02
we're going to take big fish we can get
2:03
them but we're out for some eaters we're
2:05
going to have a shore lunch every day
2:06
we're at buck lake lodge and we just
2:08
want to sort of relax chill out figure
2:11
the lake out ourselves and do like
2:13
the boys
2:14
trip to the lake we just came off a
2:16
pretty grueling road trip
2:19
and we were hunting for trophies and and
2:21
it was it's a totally different mindset
2:23
totally different
2:25
type of fishing and uh we we just want
2:28
to sit back our main goal is just to
2:30
relax have a great time do a little
2:31
fishing some shore lunch as pete said
2:34
and just chill out and enjoy
2:40
it's nice sitting down fishing isn't it
2:42
buddy i love it this is awesome we need
2:45
to do this a little more often i'll be
2:47
honest with you i don't know how much i
2:49
could take
2:50
it's okay right now
2:52
but a day or two of this and i might be
2:55
crawling out of my skin i need i need
2:56
some action i need to move i need to zig
2:58
and zag really yeah
3:02
[Music]
3:05
oh i got the spot for us
3:07
you got it marked out oh
3:09
boy it took a lot of technical reading
3:10
to get that one
3:12
what do you got
3:13
oh just something a little special i
3:15
found it on the map
3:17
[Music]
3:23
the clouds overhead are parting a bitter
3:25
northerly wind is pushing against us and
3:27
building strength if we're going to
3:29
satisfy our appetite for a walleye feast
3:31
we need to find a spot with a high
3:33
concentration of perfect eating walleye
3:35
fast yeah yeah you know you're fishing
3:37
in the right spot when
3:39
[Music]
3:41
there's something going here
3:44
come on
3:49
well
3:50
i can't i tell my friend
3:53
that wind's picking up again oh yeah why
3:55
wouldn't it you know or
3:58
we're trying to catch a fish now so we
4:00
might as well get some wind in here
4:02
staying down nice i will say that yes
4:05
he's staying down like a
4:07
like a walleye yes too but
4:10
don't let that line sitting on top here
4:12
so far no i don't like your line on my
4:15
line either right now i want to be a
4:17
part of the auction
4:18
come on oh son i think i saw
4:21
a big wall what we want to see i think
4:24
yeah
4:25
nice we got a walleye yeah now where's
4:28
the net i'll get it here
4:32
i'll just hold it there hang out here he
4:35
comes to you
4:38
right there you got him
4:39
yep
4:40
you got it i got her
4:42
that's a nice walleye right out outside
4:45
on that we might have something figured
4:47
out we might have it
4:48
i hope
4:50
let us pray now we're going to throw
4:51
this guy back i don't want to keep one
4:53
that big
4:54
for sure lunch
4:56
just fought a little different than that
4:58
he sure he hasn't got my jig in him huh
5:02
i helped you bring him in
5:04
gorgeous walleye
5:05
huge i mean he is a an edible but he's
5:07
on the big edible side we'll get we're
5:09
going to get smaller ones in that so i
5:10
like keeping them smaller than that so
5:12
we'll give this guy the nice release
5:16
thank you buddy
5:20
okay a little maneuvering here okay you
5:22
know what i like that
5:25
i like that a lot so what's that that's
5:27
a finger that's coming off of the actual
5:29
point right yeah it may be the point
5:31
underneath right it might be just a just
5:32
coming out extension yeah and i marked
5:34
it so we got to wait for it so let's see
5:36
if we can get let's see if we can get
5:38
right on it
5:39
and and
5:40
anchor up or do something right there
5:42
and fish it for a while and and let's
5:44
just see if if we can
5:46
go right to the waypoint i'll pull you
5:48
20 feet ahead of it drop the anchor
5:50
perfect sit right on it done that
5:51
doesn't work
5:53
then we know we have to drift yep
5:54
[Music]
5:58
we know there's hundreds of walleye here
5:59
so it's a matter of getting the size you
6:01
want oh there's our short launcher right
6:03
there
6:08
though pete and i may have pinpointed
6:10
our personal walleye buffet
6:12
this spot has us exposed to some wild
6:14
winds making it nearly impossible to
6:16
hold a position over our would-be
6:18
banquet okay let's try that right there
6:19
and just drop her out
6:21
so what i'm doing here i'm gonna deploy
6:23
the drift sock we tried
6:25
free drifting
6:27
with this wind though it's just a little
6:28
too fast we can't get down to those fish
6:30
but uh we tried anchoring up that was a
6:32
little too slow
6:34
so we're gonna try something in between
6:36
and that's the drift sock that i just
6:38
put out in the water it should slow us
6:40
down
6:41
we'll still get some movement so it
6:43
won't be like we're anchored but we're
6:45
not gonna be blowing off this point
6:47
like we have been with uh
6:49
with just a free drift the wind's just
6:51
way too strong
6:58
yes there he is
7:00
oh yeah talk to me brother it doesn't
7:03
feel very big brother
7:04
feels very shaky again oh boy and he's
7:07
moving very much sideways like
7:09
what northern pike would do but that's
7:11
all right that's all right and he's
7:13
pulling very much like a northern right
7:14
i just heard the teeth breaking like
7:16
usually if it quacks like a duck and
7:18
locks like a duck brother it is a it is
7:21
a duck okay so we're in shell we're in
7:23
tighter on that what we're gonna do now
7:25
is we're
7:26
we're gonna drift this point again and
7:28
we went in tight we're going to start
7:29
working doing different drifts out
7:31
farther from the point getting a little
7:32
deeper so we know right there to pike we
7:34
do not want to be anywhere near there
7:37
so it looks like the
7:38
running the debate along the bank and
7:40
these walleyes staying out off the point
7:42
so out deeper
7:44
so what i'll do is the wind's blowing us
7:46
this way
7:48
drift
7:49
drift just zigzag out work it when we
7:52
find fish
7:53
way point it marker buoy it whatever
7:56
especially if we get a big wall i think
7:57
you know we get a group of three
7:59
pounders three four pounders and there's
8:01
there's lots of them here we know
8:02
there's hundreds of walleye here so it's
8:04
a matter of getting the size you want
8:07
[Music]
8:13
walleye get out of here
8:16
look at you jimmy
8:18
boy that'd eat good wouldn't it oh
8:20
there's our short launcher right there
8:22
we're gonna put him in the box we're
8:24
gonna eat him up yep that a boy
8:27
i brought a knife with his name on it
8:34
good job that's perfect
8:36
one more of those
8:38
and we got it
8:39
and maybe one more after that three is
8:41
all we would need three of those would
8:43
be perfect man
8:45
nice
8:48
there is lunch one
8:51
ann just got his lunch yeah i know what
8:53
i'm eating
8:57
i hate eating alone
9:00
sure wouldn't want to have a short lunch
9:01
for one
9:10
got him
9:11
yeah
9:13
not much there i was going to say that
9:15
rod's coming back straight pretty quick
9:22
it's not i'm thinking oh it's a walleye
9:24
nice
9:25
an eater an eater there's your eater
9:27
buddy oh watch me drop him in the lake
9:31
don't fall in the lake
9:33
suffer
9:35
[Music]
9:42
yeah good looking fish that's a perfect
9:45
eating size walleye right there folks
9:47
more perfect but
9:49
here's yours yeah yours might be watch
9:51
me drop him in the lake here i'm just
9:52
going to see what he looks like to just
9:54
give an idea to the people what we
9:56
normally keep
9:57
just over 17-inch walleyes 17 is perfect
10:00
just the right size to go into the box
10:04
yes guy
10:08
i don't have to eat alone now well he's
10:10
going to have steak or something silly
10:12
you know
10:13
boy there's a pile of right here
10:15
oh my god you imagine how many you can
10:17
catch in a day this lake is loaded
10:26
fish
10:27
oh
10:29
no he's still on
10:31
going to be around my bag here in a
10:32
minute
10:35
there'll be our three there'd be our
10:36
three fish for eating right there buddy
10:38
for sure
10:40
boy he would be tasty right there he's
10:42
going right in the pan that boy
10:46
right in the pan oh yeah nice perfect
10:49
size
10:52
i could taste that already
10:54
yummy
10:59
bye-bye
11:00
yes we have lunch
11:03
good job buddy
11:05
there will be food today
11:07
there will be food
11:10
with enough gold in the live well for a
11:12
perfect walleye dinner for two our
11:13
original mission is complete
11:15
but not even this wicked gale could pull
11:17
us away from a spot like this boy
11:20
there's a pile of remote hearing yeah
11:21
it's nice there's a lot this lake is
11:23
loaded
11:25
no here's the question to you what we do
11:28
have a camera crew here
11:30
you wanna you wanna feed them as well
11:32
we feed the camera guys as well
11:35
all right
11:37
now we should measure that guy
11:40
because he might be over 18 right
11:45
right there
11:46
he's over 18.
11:48
so we're allowed one like that each okay
11:51
so that's one
11:53
mr cameraman you're very lucky man yes
11:56
sir
12:00
not sure
12:02
not your oh no i'm sure but what what he
12:05
went
12:06
[Laughter]
12:10
with cast after cast producing bite
12:12
after bite
12:13
we need to see just how many of these
12:14
clones we can get
12:17
well a guy can get a mess of those out
12:18
here
12:19
we spent a couple of days at a lodge
12:21
like this say oh my god you imagine how
12:24
many you could catch in a day but you
12:26
know you know it was amazing though it
12:27
took us a while to find these fish yeah
12:29
i would yeah you're right it took us a
12:31
while but
12:32
you know we don't know the lake we got a
12:34
few tips off you know
12:36
the guides here and uh you gotta hit two
12:39
or three spots but for us to dial this
12:41
in it took us a while to dial this in
12:42
didn't it and a lot of persistence so
12:45
there you go buddy
12:46
nice we'll catch a bunch of them today
12:48
for sure
12:49
all right
12:55
it is
12:59
nice wall right
13:00
he's lucky though he's the lucky one
13:02
today yeah you are the lucky one my
13:04
friend
13:08
gorgeous nice look at that
13:10
lucky lucky boy
13:13
i don't know if it's because of this sun
13:15
coming out or whatever but they're
13:16
tapping now they're hitting it right
13:18
typically walleye fishing you've got
13:20
two bites uh for the most part two bites
13:23
especially the jigs is either just mush
13:25
he's just there you don't even feel the
13:26
bite or
13:27
like that and they're starting to do
13:28
that thing that means they're getting
13:30
active and they're starting to feed
13:31
pretty good pretty heavy so
13:35
[Music]
13:38
you tell me if you need a net i can
13:39
scoop it up oh it's a nice walleye yeah
13:42
that's a nice fish
13:44
great average in here oh my god
13:46
beautiful average algoma gold buddy
13:49
algoma gold
13:51
right there
13:53
they'll catch a hundred of them in a in
13:56
a day or two here at the boat oh yeah
13:58
yeah at least
14:07
we tucked it out buddy
14:09
persevered
14:13
i got a real bizarre feeling on this
14:14
fish
14:17
weird
14:19
that's very cool isn't that neat wow
14:27
to get to today's awesome walleye lake
14:29
take highway 400 north to highway 69.
14:33
next take highway 17 northwest to white
14:36
river
14:37
finally turn right onto highway 631
14:40
which will take you to the fort air base
14:41
just outside of hornpayne ontario from
14:44
there it's a short flight to buck lake
14:46
lodge
14:49
i'd like to see the wind pick up a
14:51
little bit yeah nice you know
15:00
[Music]
15:01
under the boat but he doesn't feel like
15:02
much
15:04
hey look at this can you dig that sucker
15:08
can you dig it sucker
15:10
that's what we should feed the cameraman
15:12
[Music]
15:14
oh look he's pooping don't poop in the
15:16
boat
15:18
oh he did poop in the boat oh i think i
15:20
dropped it in there no it's hanging off
15:22
him still oh he just dropped another one
15:25
get that thing out of here
15:26
let me shake that one out of you
15:29
that thing right there
15:31
would be a perfect meal for about a
15:34
50-inch northern pike and there are 50
15:36
is northern pike in this lake what a
15:39
looking fish
15:40
in that mouth
15:46
okay little guy
15:47
thanks for the entertainment
15:48
[Music]
15:50
that was funny
15:53
so there's pike walleye and suckers up
15:55
here along with whatever baits up here
15:57
algoma they got it all you got it all
16:00
happening it's all happening buddy
16:09
this is a real shaky fish but it feels
16:11
like a good one
16:13
a shaky good one it's it's a i got a
16:15
real bizarre feeling on this fish okay i
16:18
don't know why i think the teeth are
16:20
hitting it
16:21
constantly and it's not breaking my line
16:23
he's keeping the rod bent
16:25
he's fighting very much like a pike but
16:27
like
16:28
it's a weird
16:30
it's tingling and pinging
16:32
[Music]
16:37
weird
16:38
that is weird
16:40
maybe it's a white fizz is there a white
16:42
fish in here yeah maybe it has a white
16:44
fish no way it is i guessed it
16:48
look at that a whitey wow lovely wipers
16:51
they catch suckers they catch yeah
16:54
everything but walleye i knew it was a
16:56
sizable fish yeah just different the way
16:58
he thought yeah
17:00
wow is he a scrapper
17:02
there he might be done now i'll try and
17:04
pull him up by the jig
17:05
that's very cool isn't that neat wow oh
17:08
there he goes
17:09
bye bye bye bye come on
17:12
take off buddy there he goes
17:14
he's gone white fish that's very wow
17:17
yeah
17:18
oh well i don't mind that
17:21
different
17:22
let's call it a day buddy let's go
17:24
brother we've got some walleye to eat
17:26
yeah
17:28
what's the expression when the going
17:30
gets tough the tough get going well
17:33
we're done being tough and we're
17:35
definitely going back to our cabin that
17:37
is time to enjoy the fruits of our labor
17:40
in as much as ants and i don't mind
17:42
spending long days in the water when the
17:44
weather's this ugly the thoughts of a
17:45
nice warm cabin are awfully good besides
17:48
the old guts are starting to growl and i
17:50
can't get my mind off a nice feed of
17:52
buck lake walleye
17:54
while ants gets the fire sparked up i'll
17:56
do what i do best slice and
17:58
dice the best meat in the world
18:01
though it may not have been the
18:03
laid-back fishing trip that we were
18:04
hoping for there's nothing quite as
18:07
rewarding as relaxing by the fire after
18:09
a long hard day on the water especially
18:11
if it's over a delicious meal a freshly
18:14
caught walleye
18:15
with a dinner like this and a view this
18:18
spectacular who could complain
18:20
besides mother nature has to take it
18:23
easy on us one of these days
18:25
right
18:27
[Music]
18:35
today's hot spot is an extending
18:37
underwater rock point protruding out
18:38
from witch's nose on buck lake the
18:41

right there
18:43
pete and i first investigated this spot
18:45
on a nasty rainy day and found that it
18:48
was loaded with northern pike in and
18:50
around the 12 foot deep mark we knew
18:52
because of the amount of northerns
18:53
around that there had to be an abundance
18:54
of bait there too
18:56
the following day we returned and tried
18:58
a bit deeper and found 16 to 17 feet
19:01
being the magic number for walleye
19:03
by first graphing in quick draw contours
19:05
with our portable echo map and then
19:07
shading in the 16 to 18 foot contours
19:10
with a specific color we could stay
19:12
exactly in our walleye zone and not
19:14
venture into pike infested waters
