On this show Pete Bowman takes on the Common Carp in gigantic Lake Ontario.
He burns tons of time and gas looking for the pre-spawn cold water giants and finally finds the mother load... but can he catch them?

One of Canada's longest-running fishing shows, Fish'n Canada travels from coast to coast in search of trophy fishing opportunities. First started by brothers Angelo and Reno Viola in 1986, The Fish’n Canada Show has been on the air for over 30 years. Today, Angelo is joined by lifelong fishing buddy, Pete Bowman, and the pair continue to travel across Canada educating anglers using the experience they’ve gained over the years #Fishing

I'm surrounded by carp one two three
0:13
four five six you were oh my god big one
0:17
right there come on girls look at the
0:21
friggin carpet big old wolf it right
0:25
there butcher the fish in Canada show
0:29
brought to you in part by Ram trucks
0:32
nothing worked harder than a round turn
0:35
trusted on the water since 1952 mercury
0:39
and Florida number one on the water and
0:42
outdoor Canada Canada's only national
0:45
fishing and fishing magazine
0:48
[Music]
0:51
so we're here at fishing Canada decided
0:53
to do a show on carp fishing it's not
0:55
our first and it's definitely not going
0:56
to be our last tail in a cocktail hello
0:59
engine I wouldn't call ourselves experts
1:00
I do feel we are gaining valuable
1:02
knowledge with every season that passes
1:04
the beauty of carp fishing is it opens
1:06
up a whole new world to us
1:07
totally contrasting the bass walleye and
1:09
pike that were more used to pay back I
1:11
remember talking to Anne's a long time
1:13
ago and he said he had seen some huge
1:15
carp on the north side of the duck
1:16
islands in eastern Lake Ontario when he
1:19
was fishing the bass tournament some
1:20
twenty plus years ago he said it was
1:23
load of a fish sounds like a good place
1:25
to check out since it should be
1:26
untouched and is definitely unique home
1:29
carp are not so well known in Canada and
1:32
certainly not as popular as other
1:33
locations around the world so they're
1:35
very intriguing to me okay plus I want
1:38
to learn as much as I can about them
1:40
you'll know our formula for success on
1:42
the water is klp knowledge location and
1:45
presentation and you can't really know
1:47
your quarry unless you read lots about
1:49
them watch them on the water talk to the
1:51
experts and then fish them like I'm
1:53
going to do today having said all that
1:55
this is pre spawn so cart behavior will
1:58
probably be somewhat erratic we'll see
2:00
what I do know about them is that when
2:02
they're in pre spawn they're moving
2:04
around in shallow water and they're
2:05
congregating look at those carps like
2:07
about two giants
2:08
I approached Maine Duck Island from the
2:09
West where there was a large shallow
2:11
point I figured if there's any
2:13
concentration of fish there I'd see them
2:15
by using polarized glasses an angler can
2:17
quickly scan and surmise whether the
2:19
fish are there or not and they were not
2:21
so it's a matter of moving without
2:24
fishing and covering as much water as
2:26
possible until I could see a
2:27
concentration of fish I saw some fish
2:30
but they seemed scattered not enough to
2:32
stop and set off I kept scanning the
2:34
shoreline and suddenly came across an
2:35
area of somewhat murky water here I saw
2:39
the biggest concentration of fish so far
2:40
I set the boat and began summing the
2:42
water with boiled corn I always throw a
2:45
small handful o feed somewhat close to
2:46
the boat in case an aggressive hungry
2:48
fishes around so I can see if the fish
2:50
are actually feeding trust me when they
2:52
eat you know it boiled corn vanilla
2:55
extract and it's sugar in it a couple of
2:57
special ingredients
2:58
everybody behind you
3:02
I've one time put vanilla vodka in my
3:05
corn boil it and it worked great
3:06
I made some casts but nothing was
3:10
happening as I mentioned earlier these
3:12
are pre spawn fish and they're just not
3:14
eating the way they normally do I was
3:17
starting to worry about finding these
3:18
fish since I was so far out in Lake
3:20
Ontario I didn't have a lot of choices I
3:22
decided to check out Swetman Island aka
3:25
Falls Duck Island and as soon as I got
3:27
there I started seeing fish one two
3:34
three four five six oh there's a big one
3:39
right there
3:39
look at the friggin carp here I'm
3:42
surrounded by carp I'm not going to be
3:45
easy to fish them at the big cart right
3:47
there man I set up on the shallow side
3:49
of the point and look for a clear scum
3:51
free area on the bottom to chump Lake
3:53
Ontario is notorious for doing a dark
3:55
green slimy scum weed that makes it
3:57
incredibly hard to present a bait the
4:00
hotter the weather the thicker the scum
4:02
luckily I'm here an early summer before
4:04
the peak of the slimy take over I
4:06
finally chose a fishing spot that had
4:08
two ingredients lots of fish in a very
4:10
visible area looking for visible shallow
4:13
fish is a no-brainer but getting them to
4:15
come to and feed in the specific spot
4:17
that's not so easy I jump this little
4:21
piece of carp real estate with boiled
4:22
corn and then set up my hair rig the
4:24
sweet corn big Senate kernels of corn
4:25
and pineapple scented boilies
4:27
[Music]
4:33
my next step is to test out and wait
4:37
here's an interesting point it's
4:40
important to soak and boil your feed
4:41
corn before coming an area dry corn once
4:44
water induce can swell up to four times
4:46
its original size
4:47
if kirpan just a pound of dry corn which
4:50
a big fish can do very easily that now
4:52
wet corn could swell up to four pounds
4:55
and tear the fish's intestines free
4:57
boiling your feed corn makes a lot of
4:59
sense for a lot of reasons things
5:02
there's strongman pretty much a beast
5:05
right there since Pete was using scented
5:17
boilies first carp episode today here's
5:19
a few reasons why scented dates are such
5:21
a great idea freshwater fish like pike
5:24
bass walleye and carp have highly
5:27
developed olfactory glands and are
5:29
attracted to certain sense that's why so
5:32
many fresh water bait manufactures
5:34
especially of plastic mates build a
5:36
scent right in otherwise they're sold in
5:39
containers as paste fluids and gels and
5:41
no matter how you put it on your bait
5:43
they work for anglers the most important
5:47
thing about scenting bait is that it
5:49
covers up the human scent any baits or
5:52
rigs like today's hair rig that require
5:54
a lot of handling to set up put your
5:56
hook up right at risk if your scent is
5:58
not masked fish with their acute sense
6:01
of smell will also turn off at the
6:03
slightest scent of gas suntan lotion or
6:06
any foreign chemical for that matter the
6:09
other side of the coin of course if they
6:11
like it they'll keep that bait in their
6:13
mouth just a moment or two longer that
6:15
will increase your hookup rate for sure
6:18
fishing is a serious business go see the
6:21
pros at sale and they'll set you up with
6:23
whatever you need to make your bait
6:24
smell delicious
6:26
[Music]
6:32
now finally gone it's gone to New York
6:41
nice
6:44
take the drag down a little bit that's
6:48
so awesome
6:49
I bet this place and I've been sitting
6:51
there watching these fish eating I'm
6:53
sure they're feeding on myself I was
6:57
just getting ready to go crazy just
6:59
ready to do a light fluorocarbon leader
7:01
and all that kind of stuff just to see
7:03
if you look at how how heavy-duty this
7:04
stuff is but let you know what as I'm
7:07
doing it I want to send you here to a
7:09
free spool spinning so if the longest
7:18
rods in the world luckily all along is
7:20
net in the world clear here is Derrick
7:27
get that other than that get that out of
7:29
the way hold up this little fella and I
7:32
call this a little fella
7:33
even though this is probably there some
7:36
people the biggest fish they've ever
7:36
caught in their life in the world of
7:40
carp is not that big in the world of
7:43
Lake Ontario carp is really not being at
7:45
all but he's pretty cool-looking fish
7:48
common carp perfect scale patterns and
7:51
these guys are so Hardy he'll just some
7:54
way like nothing it's not as easy as it
7:57
looks
7:58
and just taken me a while to dial it in
8:00
mmm
8:03
hey did you know that besides well-known
8:05
game fish Ontario has a variety of other
8:08
species that offer great sport including
8:10
carp catfish freshwater drum sturgeon
8:14
and even white fish a big powerful and
8:17
weary fish are what you see
8:18
you'll love carp they're found in many
8:21
shallow weedy muddy areas of the Great
8:23
Lakes and southern and land waters savvy
8:25
anglers fish for them with worms corn or
8:28
dough balls that are set on or just
8:30
above bottom on sinkers or floaters many
8:33
fly routers are also finding great sport
8:35
fishing for these skittish fish
8:37
Ontario's carp fishing is underutilized
8:39
new provincial records are out there
8:41
so-called fish in Ontario today daddy
8:50
yeah another one that's making a job
8:56
made a gob look at this yeah you want to
9:02
tighten your drive but you want to
9:03
tighten too much because it gonna you
9:05
can rip their lip and they just get up
9:09
I've been seeing this one specific
9:12
little spot trying to get into an area
9:14
that's got no scum on it and I get three
9:17
throwing Reed throwing out a spook and
9:18
fish and it was not what you're supposed
9:19
to do but I couldn't understand how it
9:21
couldn't get bit and I'm feeding with
9:24
heart like boiled corn and I'm throwing
9:27
nice soft sweet corns let's see what I
9:32
can do here
9:36
they're they're pretty much a beast
9:44
right there look at that thing
9:47
ah being very nice to me it's good sized
9:51
carp that's it that's not big for Lake
9:54
oh I'll tell you that right now but it's
9:55
a good it's a big carp so give anybody a
9:58
good tussle look at this thing
10:00
massive he's milking see these fish are
10:03
spawning
10:03
that fish is milky that's a male they're
10:05
the size of the Milky imagine the
10:06
females there you go things are strong
10:14
man I'll tell you what if you're poor
10:16
are right there doesn't get pumped with
10:18
that you are a bodybuilder extreme that
10:21
just it just worked it out you probably
10:27
noticed all the squawking going on in
10:29
the background
10:30
this island is loaded with birds I mean
10:32
a lot of birds all I see are seagulls
10:36
and lots and lots of cormorants what our
10:40
racket they make but that's nothing the
10:42
stench from the clam rat poop is
10:44
unbelievable it contains a lot of
10:46
ammonia and is extremely acidic which is
10:48
devastating to vegetation each of these
10:51
machines can and do eat their own way to
10:54
fish every day and here's the kicker
10:57
they're protected by our government now
11:02
with all this negative there certainly
11:04
comes a positive the seagull a bird that
11:07
is almost as much of maligned creatures
11:09
of dirty old farming has suddenly risen
11:11
on my good animals these false Duck
11:15
Island gulls are having a heyday
11:20
chrome rat X for an appetizer and let's
11:24
call it Clemente veal for the main
11:26
course chow down your little gluttons
11:36
you're doing us a huge favor that's
11:44
pulling good I just relocated around the
11:48
point you get out of the wind has died
11:51
down efficient move away and I came
11:57
along this beep break here this place
12:01
getting a bolt this Ridge barely took
12:03
off I'm gonna just follow it up I'll let
12:06
the boat go over at once there so this
12:09
might be the big female sitting off his
12:10
deep break there's nothing right there
12:11
this giant Tyler awesome that's cool
12:16
that fish is out there total moss
12:19
bottoms you can see this bottom here is
12:20
a little different over there I had
12:21
clear patch of sand patches which is
12:23
really nice to work with here's all
12:25
mossy and mucky so what I did was they
12:28
use pop-up boilies there's something
12:30
that'll get me up out of the moss just
12:31
just that far up off the bottom
12:34
look at the yellow in the front of that
12:35
thing now it imitates corn I think I
12:37
actually have a giant corn kernel corn
12:39
on there too so I got a pop-up boilie
12:41
pineapple flavor and that thing is
12:44
obviously sitting down the bottom of
12:46
Lake Ontario and just glistening it
12:48
shows up like crazy so maybe that's
12:50
perfect hookup to fish did not take off
12:52
either this guy did not did not
12:55
head for the hills so to speak it just
12:56
the line barely moved out I had to lift
12:58
up and see if I can like again them I'm
13:01
hoping that this is going to work for me
13:02
don't have much time left in the Navy
13:07
easy girl
13:12
school that's so easily
13:18
this is awaiting a total waiting game
13:20
totally different than bass fishing out
13:22
here in the main duck islands or don't
13:24
hear the false duck Islands or any of
13:26
these any of these islands it's like
13:27
it's like a if a special your work or no
13:31
back and forth and up and down pretty
13:34
good fish I said it wasn't that big but
13:35
I have to retract it's a pretty good
13:38
hard to get a hold of these beasts
13:40
sometimes you get a hold of that
13:41
pectoral fin alright short and fat oh
13:48
yeah mmm well I got a little bit of time
13:55
left I can get one more I'll be happy
14:00
[Music]
14:05
today's hot spot is a rocky point
14:07
extending from false duck island the
14:09
waypoint on your screen get you there
14:10
using a boat is the only way of
14:12
accessing this Waypoint after that is
14:14
turqu choice as to setting up onshore or
14:16
in the boat the active and feeding carp
14:18
started the day in the extreme shallows
14:19
but eventually moved off into the deeper
14:21
water adjacent to the point i'll boy you
14:23
can get away with regular fishing view
14:25
here a carp specific rod and reel makes
14:27
the whole experience more effective and
14:29
authentic love them or not carp are
14:31
going to be here in Canada for a long
14:32
time
14:33
so why not embrace this underutilized
14:35
fishery more hot spots like this one
14:36
check out fishing Canada calm
14:40
[Music]
14:48
I swear to god folks that fish followed
14:51
my cat I cast to the fish I've never
14:54
done that before for carp ever but being
14:59
around their feet around like crazy in
15:00
one squat and and I watched it it went
15:06
over Rick towards my boilie dropping I
15:07
threw it out and brought it back I kind
15:09
of penned a little handle back into the
15:12
zone where he was eating damn foreign
15:16
ate it
15:17
that is so cool I've never seen it like
15:20
a bass maybe not as fast as a smallmouth
15:22
but there's crazy a strike as a muskie
15:27
but like that yeah beautiful
15:31
[Music]
15:34
all of a sudden I'm presented with a
15:36
whole new range of possibilities for
15:38
carp fishing another little bit of info
15:40
to be stowed away in the knowledge
15:42
Department along with a lot of info for
15:44
location Department the reality of this
15:46
little fishing expedition is that all
15:48
these carp are in a pre spawn stage and
15:50
as such ready to rock each other's world
15:52
yet completely unpredictable to me
15:58
awesome big old goldfish right there
16:02
folks there's so many of them in this
16:07
league somebody that size around me
16:09
right now that is ridiculous
16:13
anybody easy pretty good floor for the
16:16
students it it's a rubber floor so you
16:20
take care of your fish clean them down I
16:22
get the net and a rubber floor so you
16:24
not good with the bad
16:31
yes they said fun this was actually a
16:35
very interesting fishing trip I learned
16:38
a lot about car behavior the importance
16:40
of location the criticality of bait
16:42
presentation and that Clemente poop
16:45
really stinks huh ammonia and poopoo to
16:58
get the today's great carp fishing I
16:59
first took highway 401 to highway 41
17:01
Nappanee and headed south
17:03
next I turned east on highway 2 and then
17:06
sewed on road 7 at storms corners I
17:08
finally turned south west on loyalist
17:10
Parkway traveled through the town of
17:12
Bath to a boat launch on the shores of
17:14
Lake Ontario a word of warning this boat
17:16
launch can be unsafe with strong
17:18
incoming winds
17:22
[Music]
17:29
for today's kolp I definitely have to go
17:31
with elf location you have to have the
17:33
carp around you before you catch up yeah
17:35
you need knowledge any presentation but
17:37
they got to be here
17:37
I started up today on the dock Islands
17:39
had some fish around but I couldn't
17:40
catch up so I thought I better move I
17:42
looked at waffles Island saw nothing
17:44
where's the timber island I saw nothing
17:46
I finally ended up at fall stock Island
17:48
and rolled the hole there is a ton of
17:49
fish around now I got them rotated I
17:52
just have to catch the fish in Canada
17:57
show brought to you in part by sales the
18:00
outdoor superstore Coleman the Outdoor
18:05
company musk all proudly Canadian since
18:09
1951 Cooper Tires life the road trips
18:13
