0:00
and now another exciting episode in The Adventures of Outdoor Journal
0:06
radio yes sir Bobby yes Bobby who's Bobby I don't know who the hell Bobby
0:12
Bobby dazzler you Bobby dazzler he's our favorite Bobby uh welcome to the program uh Peter
0:19
Bowman Angela Viola vova Dean crew out there uh I know I say this
0:26
all the time about you know getting excited about a particular episode but I am so excited for us about this episode
0:34
uh joining us shortly very quickly if I have anything to do with it a gentleman by the name of Peter Fox he and his I
0:42
believe his father's involved in the business as well uh but anyways they own a place called Brant or Brant that's the
0:50
way it's spelled but BR bant we'll ask him how it's pronounced think he says BRB yeah I think he says bband so
0:55
brebant Lodge in the Northwest Territory give hell yeah hell yeah indeed boy it's
1:03
been a long time for us buddy oh my God it's been two decades wow two decades
1:09
since we have visited there yes can't wait two decades ago I think we're overdue maybe right oh my God we are
1:17
going back to nwt baby give me a hell yeah and uh we'll be talking about All
1:24
Good Things N WT with Peter when he joins us here in you might be a little surprised at what Peter's going to have
1:30
to say about the fishery there too by the way cuz we were very surprised just to let you know so just quickly bring
1:35
you up the speed as to even how we even got about to finding and going to this
1:42
place uh started uh with episodes that we shot in uh British Columbia and the
1:48
mountains and in the Rockies Northwest or Northeast sector of the Rockies where
1:53
we discovered a few years ago thanks to a good friend of ours Roy arms correct who put us on to it uh we discovered uh
2:00
we thought he was bullshitting us we thought that's a bunch of [ __ ] when he told us [ __ ] thank you we heard
2:06
Walley in northern BC yeah Pik waly and Pike and we said there is no what do you
2:11
and and he was he an American friend of ours and we said you're an idiot a bunch
2:16
of [ __ ] what do you who do you know about Canada now you're telling us he said I'm telling you there is a place
2:23
out there in that part of the Rockies that uh will put you onto some
2:29
of the best northern pike and Walley fishing you've ever had and that uh what
2:35
to us was totally ridiculous there's a bunch of B [ __ ] yeah and it was a bunch of Truth too like it was totally true
2:42
once we found out I come on really but the interesting part of that story is
2:47
that um we discovered because we were very curious we'd never we' fish BC all
2:54
over BC for years and there was never any talk about that species either one
3:01
of those two species and then we were surprised as hell when we heard there was bass back then but that was that's sort of a normal thing now right but
3:08
back in the day but still BC for pike walleye bass it didn't it just didn't
3:14
sound right right and so we met up with a gentleman Northern uh um Rockies Lodge
3:19
right uh Ur and uh lo and behold he put us onto these these great yes I have
3:26
bike yes I have Walley what how big do you want them and so we went in fished them and we started asking questions and
3:33
these fish um they owe their Origins to
3:38
Great Slave Lake through the McKenzie river oh my and we said there's no way
3:43
that's a half a world away from here but so anyways so after that shoot we did a couple of shoots there uh we started
3:50
looking into it and lo and behold we found that at the mouth of the McKenzie
3:56
river where it dumps into great slave is mecca for Northern bike and walleye so
4:03
give me hell yeah hell yeah Stevie thank you so anyways uh our crack research
4:09
Department uh consisting of Dean Taylor come on now that's right uh he said yeah
4:15
there's a place there and Steve uh our uh Pro Staff co-host
4:21
fishing candidate dude good friend of ours they looked into it and he found out that there was a place right there
4:27
at the mouth of the Mackenzie that features walleye and Pike no lake trout so we put
4:35
two and two together we kind of built the whole thing and lo and behold uh today we're going to talk to uh the
4:40
owner of that place and we're going to be going to visit him in about 3 weeks uh to shoot a fish in Canada episode or
4:48
two hopefully and he's going to kind of clear the air on that whole myth that
4:54
great slave is home to Giant lake trout who feed on grailing and that are it
5:02
because there's a whole other fishery there that uh hopefully we're going to encounter and find and you're going to
5:07
find out more on this episode so yes guys there you go love it uh don't
5:13
forget fishing Canada the store fishing Canada the store which is shop. fishing

6:31
we'll have Pike and we'll have all kinds ofu oh I can't wait for the pike one maybe we should have some of them for Northwest Territories wouldn't that
6:38

6:56
listener feedback this is a biggie this is a long one McDonald from Ontario
7:01
Brandon laid it out on the line for us in a good way um I read it over and Angelo you and I can have a little chat
7:08
about some of Brandon's uh thoughts here read read it says hi guys love the podcast I recently started listening to
7:14
your to podcast using spotify and yours is the first one I chose to hear I have
7:19
been listening to them from the beginning and trying to get caught up so I have heard every one of them thank you
7:25
very much for that Brandon uh and also each week when the new one comes out I listen listen to it on the way to and from work or at the gym and the gym nice
7:33
it's a great place to listen to podcast by the way if you're if you're a gym goer and you I mean if you're listen to metal music like myself that pretty much
7:40
gives you a pump the just without even lifting weights but when you add in the the gym do you need the you need the
7:45
heavy metal to get you all oh buddy it's the best workout music I don't know about anything else but I can't see
7:51
working out to opera or classical or you know what I mean maybe Blue Grass forino maybe the the speed but good old
7:57
hardcore metal I'll tell you why you left a ton of weight doing that I'll tell you that uh brandid goes on to say
8:03
one of the recent episodes you asked for suggestions and we did on species of
8:09
fish that uh you could catch that haven't been filmed before um and we did a few episodes ago
8:16
we said hey you know give us some uh some input what would you like to see so I guess he's taking from that yep um and
8:24
he says how about the Grand River brown trout well a great idea we've done that
8:29
we've done that one we have done that bud uh he says Dean would have to be on it as it's a fly fishing area only well
8:38
which is not true yeah cuz we the one we did was there's a section of the grand that is non-f fly fishing at least was at the time and we were we fished it
8:45
with spinners and stuff like that and little jerk baits says I think Bob isumi used to used Bob Bobby baby Bobby oh
8:54
Bobby Bobby dazzler Bobby dazzler Bobby da he says Grand River by the way he said like guides like Grand River TR
9:00
well we used gr grindstone angling for that too so he he was wrong on all bases there but that's
9:05
okay opinion um you can look it up I bet it might be on YouTube might be also a
9:11
few other species I don't think I've ever seen like Dolly Bon well I don't think you can get Dolly Bon on the grand
9:18
if that's you're referring to no but he says he wants to see maybe Dolly Barden programs and or bull trout programs both
9:27
of which we have produced by the way so yeah you need to go into the archives and check that out River if you look at
9:34
River uh bull trout oh my God one I know is on the website yeah Vick and an Vick
9:39
Carol and an did a great show jet boat up and down remember that jet oh my God
9:46
fantastic uh anyways he goes on to say I have never seen any episodes from you guys with these two species while you
9:53
were wrong because we did we got you Brandon we got you uh he goes on to say
9:58
I'm guessing berta's uh bo River would be the best place for it and maybe a
10:03
bonus Cutthroat too so for the dollies and the the BS of actually Brown is probably the most popular fish on the
10:11
bow right and we've done that we have done that a long time ago that was a long time ago but yeah it's been done
10:17
cuties uh Cutthroat as well um I've only seen one episode of Nipigon River we've
10:23
done two or three of those of course we have we have and uh this one from
10:29
episode he wants to see an episode from onam anaman anaman Lake Lake Resort in
10:36
the river so is referring to the nipon river you know what that's that one I don't know we have fished on theman lake
10:42
in that area but I don't think it's what he's talking about there's a resort on there I haven't ever seen any episode in
10:48
the actual lake so there so he if it's Onan Lake up near the Nipigon we have
10:53
done we have done it uh if you have a good one too Walle on jerk base man we
10:58
cra uh if you have filmed uh on that Lake uh
11:03
please do so again as one episode just is not enough for Ontario's largest lake
11:11
entirely in in Ontario borders may maybe he's talking Lake Nipigon there bet yeah maybe he's talking I think that's what
11:17
he's talking about yeah he's got to be yeah we done that we so basically we' done them all I'm sorry Brandon but uh
11:23
Brandon you got to remember we got 30 plus years here we we got three decades almost four Decades of this stuff so so
11:29
good one go ahead P.S I believe I have a few DVDs kicking around and you guys
11:35
went to anava Bay for brookies and Char and possibly Lakers on this
11:40
DVD um I don't remember that that might have been you and that I do recall I was
11:46
Glenn Carr was with me yep Glen and we were in a tent uh like a tent camp Oh
11:53
yeah and it was Perpetual daylight 23 hours of broad daylight and then an hour
11:59
of of you know mediocre mediocre light and we we spent seven days in a one of
12:06
those prospector tents oh my God and so you never had Darkness oh my God so you went you tried to sleep in broad
12:12
daylight it was hard to do but I'll tell you what though the Arctic CH fishing oh
12:17
my oh my God God that would Tire Man out right there that make you sleep wouldn't it maybe a new episode from up there
12:24
absolutely we'd be very very open to that one for sure ourselves and Gaba Bay Dean marked that down on our on our list
12:30
please come on now H places you haven't filmed at ages I would love to get all of the DVDs I have in a digital format
12:37
if you guys ever decide to make them downloadable on the site not just YouTube episodes your entire catalog is
12:45
amazing well thank you for that Brandon thank you sir we do appreciate by by the
12:50
way the lovely Nick Viola is give me a hell all right now in the house he's
12:55
joined us uh it's awfully nice of him um you know he says that we need to go back
13:02
to here and go back to there and go back there it's funny because this episode is about going back return to to the nwt
13:09
baby nwt baby give me a hell yeah sounds like the world the the wrestling group
13:15
there NWO New World Order they were good man they were good yeah they were and we are going to be
13:22
good once we go back we'll find out more about that in a couple of minutes uh Peter Fox will be joining us owner of
13:27
Bray bant Lodge and nwt baby in case I haven't said that already we're pumped
13:34
we're excited um podcast Network highlight eating wild episode 48 with
13:40
Chef Doris Finn the importance the importance of knowing where your food
13:46
comes from Angela how important is that right now right now yeah right now with
13:51
you especially doing a little dietary change a little bit here and there tweaking right yes not twerking
13:57
hopefully tweaking what's twerking I've heard that I've heard that before you twerking demonstr oh you'll look it up
14:04
you'll look it up you'll like what you see you but you won't want to see yourself doing it how's that do you do
14:10
it you twerk you don't do it either does anybody does vulet twerk no how about
14:15
Dean no Dean Dean vula and Nick have certainly seen it on the internet I
14:22
guarantee you cuz I have and and you probably have too no I doubt it I would know you're not probably not as filthy a
14:28
a person as we are which kind of a sexual kind of uh it's good moves it's
14:33
some girls can some girls are pros at it all right all right if you see a guy twerking run okay we won't go down that
14:40
uh that uh exactly anyways anyway a wonderful episode it's episode 80 or 48
14:45
look at these guys are killing themselves Bo doesn't give a [ __ ] he doesn't even know we're talking he's not even you know thing in his ear I used to
14:51
think that he was listening to the show right you know he's not what is he listening to God only knows he's getting a report from the Ukraine or something
14:59
directly he's got Direct Communications going on right now with the Ukraine he's got some Slayer ripping in there aw
15:05
maybe Slayer I don't know but he's not listening to us I know that cuz one time I I asked him and he said no why would
15:11
why would I listen I can hear you with my other exactly exactly anyways I love it uh once again
15:18
that's episode 48 eating wild podcast Network highlights cuz this is a network
15:24
by the way in case you're wondering correct correct it is a network was that Dean was that with just Antonio or was a
15:30
couple of the guys or that was just Antonio just Antonio Andor Co check it out check it out it's uh very very
15:36
important uh in the news if you're on fishing canada.com you're probably already are reading this story uh it is
15:44
uh on the new section of the uh well you know what's amazing about it is that um
15:50
most of first of all let's just tell them what this is Peter the story a pot of killer whales attacked and sunk a
15:56
yacht in the stet of jalter between Spain and Morocco uh the nearly 50ft yacht named the alboran cognac was 15 mi
16:05
from Cabo ESP spartel in Morocco I'm impressed thank you very much sir uh
16:10
when an unknown number of orcas began ramming it people were rescued from the boat from the from the boat but it sank
16:17
so um so by the way I said to you guys uh before we went to draw recording this
16:24
show because we read this these stories that are on the site I said you know I I've never even heard of an orca attack
16:32
yeah bad attacks any kind of human attacks and then you guys straighten me out right away because the next
16:38
paragraph here will tell you there have been approximately 700 obviously I'm a little behind yeah you know hav seen
16:45
twerking twk so same thing uh there have been approximately wh was almost twerk the way that their tail goes oh is that
16:52
right yeah they got a kind of a twerk to them uh 700 orc attacks since 2020
16:58
that's not that long ago that doesn't even seem possible like 700 I don't even think there's been 700 shark attacks in
17:04
that period you're probably right insane maybe it's a misprint can we can it was from Fox so if oh yeah
17:12
they yeah they've been KNN to misprint a little bit yeah that's some that seems like a lot like 70 I I would say yeah
17:19
okay maybe it seems like everyone would be aware of this if they were attacking every day 700 yeah yeah can we look into
17:27
that yeah I think we should but what continue with the story and never let the truth stand in the way of a good
17:32
story CU that makes it a really good story when that when you get a little bit of a fib in there like that according to GT Orca Atlantica that
17:41
sounds like an official group of people let me tell you GT Orca Atlantica
17:47
they're the ones who said that there's been group they're a conservation group and officials believe there are only 37
17:54
orcas in the straet of D so are these 700 ATT just in the straight of jbal
18:01
that's what the article made it seem like oh my God see 37 or they they're on to us they they are they on the human
18:07
game there they're delinquent I don't like boats delinquency there orcas have also been pulling Rudders off of boats
18:16
in that same area so specific that be one of specific to there and based on
18:21
video evidence scientists believe that the attacks started this one's wild started with one orca who then taught
18:29
others how to sink ships well that is believable in the sense of how smart they are because they are a very smart
18:36
animal right and uh and so they I'm sure once they and once they learn how to do it if it's a fun factor for them because
18:42
they are the apex predator in that water right they are there's nothing going to attack or but but there's never been
18:48
evidence before that we they're just learning there maybe there's so much encroachment on their and their Waters
18:54
with all these boats and they're finally saying what is this I'm tired of these things let's have some fun God that this
19:00
article uh wasn't released when I had an experience uh in BC with uh an old good
19:08
friend of mine God Rest his soul Pete Mauk pet and we were um we were fishing
19:15
at uh King Pacific Springs and one day we saw a pod of oras
19:23
yeah in in a Back Bay which is normal out there right which is normal out there and so we stopped fishing in and
19:29
we went into the Back Bay where we could see them breaching right film some of the stuff and we spent a half a day with
19:35
these orcas in a relatively confined area relatively shallow water for out
19:40
there and once they saw that we had stopped and we were just observing they
19:46
started interacting with us that you could tell they were circling the boat they were breaching close enough to the
19:54
boat that that there was water hitting the boat from the breaching right it was one of those once in A- lifetime
19:59
experience and at no time during that Adventure did see either one of us feel
20:05
threatened that's the thing that's the thing about Evolution those the other ones might have been doing that here in the jalter and all of a sudden they
20:12
swish the boat and they see the boat Rock and then all of a sudden hey what happened boom they Ram the who knows why
20:17
right they have a brain a lot bigger than a squirrel you know what I mean they have some U something going through
20:22
that head of there so um they were definitely afraid of boats they were definitely aware they were entertain
20:28
yeah they were playing yeah they were playing and the little ones were there doing their thing like it was a wonder and it lasted for about two 2 and a half
20:36
hours and then they just got they got bored and they they just off they went that's fantastic um meanwhile we got
20:42
some incredible footage of yeah I can IM imagine but anyways anyways that's quite a story we need to follow up on this
20:48
Dean and and and see if we can get uh we just had Nick confirm it he just confirmed the number confirmed number if
20:56
Nick confirmed it then it's got to be real obviously I didn't realize that he was involved in this but now that I do
21:02
uh thank you sir that's great that's it it's confirmed apparently got get a camera on take the rest of the day off
21:09
Nick you did good you're done good kid like George castanza you go that one
21:15
thing right get out of the meeting now okay everybody have a good day that's an incredible deal if it's uh
21:23
kind of scary yeah there is a there is a a Netflix show or something out there that deals with Orca smashing boats I I
21:31
started it and I don't know what it was but I have seen it and it's it's pretty scary pretty ominous it's just to know
21:37
that maybe they do that you never know now it's real right okay so uh that's it
21:42
that's all happening on fishing canada.com in the news section News
21:47
section of the site that's what we do we report all of this wonderful stuff beautiful stuff 700 orcus I mean attack
21:55
that's that's crazy that's insane from 37 orcas fan question of the week we should have music or some kind of a
22:02
maybe Dean does that post there you go we'll do that that's the fan question of
22:08
the week from Grant Thomas from BC via email info@ fishing
22:16
canada.com Grant asks us or says to us I
22:21
have been spinning spin fishing spinning Geer spinning CU spinning is on a bicc
22:27
SP is on a bicycle BC I've been spinning for a couple of years and thinking to try a different method which method
22:33
would you recommend first bait caster or Center pinning and which has the biggest
22:39
learning curve oo well I've never Center pinned so I couldn't I can't answer I
22:45
have in fact all of that you know I mentioned BC all of their fishing for the most part salmon fishing up there is
22:52
done with center pin man that's uh that's an old traditional way of of fishing the thing about true Center pins
22:59
is the really good uh Center pins that are Uh custom made for like there's
23:05
people actually I saw one the other day Sean gleon brought one in from a buddy of his yeah D who's a machine we call
23:12
him so he he made one um these things are are incredible very simple centerpin
23:19
doesn't have all of the mechanisms that you find in most reels both spinning and bait casting it uh a true center pin has
23:29
no or very little uh capabilities of slowing the spool down you can crank
23:36
down uh the anchor pin a little bit but it's not like a drag that you would have
23:42
on a regular reel the way you you slow them down is to Palm The Reel right so
23:47
you're you're it's it's it's basically a big oversized fly fishing reel if you
23:52
can imagine that's I mean a fly fishing reel is a center pin but these are designed for or big uh fish like salmon
24:01
fishing for example but if you don't Master the art of palming them it's pretty tough to to fight a fish that's
24:08
what makes them so exciting yeah yeah yeah and they're very effective at at at letting your line flow down current
24:14
that's the best thing about them that you can't control it any better with any other type of reel so I think it depends on on the species if if he's a a river
24:22
fisherman looking for you know troat and he's been using the spinning uh then Center pinning would be more better
24:29
choice for than bait casting I would think right there is a learning curve because because unless you're sitting
24:34
right at the current where you can actually let the line out and move they're very difficult to get to project
24:41
line right you can do it much like a fly rod and fly re um but unlike a spinning
24:46
which you can just basically cast up into the head of the Eddie and and let it float down Cent Edge right yeah yeah
24:54
now Grant if you're fishing other species other than trout you know like Bley bass anything else then Center
25:00
pinning really doesn't make any sense at all so it's more more species than and situation than it is anything else but
25:07
bait casting on the other hand you pretty much can adapt to every species of fish the only you know you could do
25:14
it of course we've done it we've done it a million times um the only limitations
25:19
with bait casting is line size they're really designed and they come into their own when you start going into the upper
25:27
end of the line diameter size uh that's what they were originally designed for
25:32
they're they're they're great for 15 to 20 lb 30 lb 40 lb 50 lb test line which
25:40
which in most cases um spinning gear has a hard time dealing with but on the
25:45
other side of that coin bait casting has a hard time dealing with you know 10 six certainly for yeah so nowadays
25:55
there's a there's a thing called bait cast finesse system BFS and they are
26:00
catering to the light line so less than 10 PB test and apparently they're very good I've never used one I don't think Angie probably use one but apparently
26:08
they're really good at flinging out you know small baits on six PB lines so if he wants to go to that that's that
26:14
direction that might be a good way to go so Dean I see you holding the mic up to your mouth you want to pipe in on that
26:20
or no I've never tried it either oh I just had this this is just where I hold it cuz I don't have mic stand yet oh and
26:25
it covers your face so we never really cover my face so the people don't know exactly I am what you're doing whether you're I can still walk down the street
26:31
andu when are you going to submit a request for a mic stand you think you could you think the company can afford it or is it is there a problem there
26:38
might be a problem he doesn't want one because I've asked him to go get one he says no no I like this cheap I love I
26:46
like holding that's awesome that's awesome I feel like I'm on American Idol or something by the way by the way you
26:52
miss this CU you very seldom work late uh you like 502 he gone at 9 yeah you're only
27:00
in at 9: when I'm not here when I come in at 9:00 you're never here at 9: so I don't know what that means once every 3
27:06
months all the more reason all the more reason why I'm suspicious if you're ever here we know that you're 11 to 5 531 the
27:14
last person goes out the door and says I stayed later but every once in a while I do come in to see my peeps to see who's
27:21
here and I'll tell you what yeah yeah I got you one night Dean and I were working
27:28
after 5 Dean Works after 5 sometimes yes he always works after 5 he comes in even earlier than you he comes in in the
27:34
morning early and he leaves late I I think I don't know that I oh I know
27:39
trust me well how do you know you're not here early you're not here late because I know Dean's a very conscientious
27:45
worker unlike yourself go go anyways uh Dean and I were here and
27:51
it was the night uh it was uh we we had been busy all day drinking beer the
27:56
after hour beer that um and that day was the day we were supposed to get a winner
28:03
for one of our contests and we had been tied up and doing various things and it didn't happen so Dean said oh we got to
28:09
we got to get the winner so I said well go for it yeah and and one thing led to another and we said why didn't you oh
28:15
boobo was here too by the way so so I stand correct it wasn't just Dean and IO it was this was all's idea actually this
28:21
was alla's idea he said why don't we record it yeah get a camera going and we'll record this guy uh uh answering
28:28
the phone and finding out that he just won a a a Garmin uh Liv scope package the
28:36
best so that's what we did but the interesting part about it I and I was sitting right here and they were doing
28:42
their thing over there anyways uh the draw was made and um Dean called him and
28:50
I don't remember the guy's name but let's just say it was Bill or something and he said you know is this bill so and
28:56
so and the I said yeah and he says it's the fishing Canada show calling and he
29:03
says is this Dean I swear to God we have it all is this Dean like he recognized
29:10
his voice which is amazing and I don't get a lot of lines so it's a no you're very impactful Dean your voice is very
29:17
anyways he knew right away that this was Dean that's amazing good stuff good
29:23
stuff anyways I don't know where I was going with that whole thing where how do we get on to that have no idea but
29:29
unbelievable bait cast finesse system so there you go hopefully we've answered your question as far as on cuz Dean was
29:35
holding the mic you thought he was going to say something that's what it was as far as difficulties go I would have to say that bait casting is probably more
29:41
difficult to master uh only because um in centerpin it's it's very basic like it's
29:50
very simple and basic bait casting involves a lot of adjustments a lot of changes that you have to make depending
29:56
on Bas long sort of lob cast in Center pending be how like 25 50 ft what like
30:02
is there a number maybe certainly not 50 no okay no depending on what you're
30:07
using for bait right the heavier the bait obviously the more it's apt to pull the line because you have to pull the
30:13
line right you have to pull the line off the spool as opposed to bait casting where where you're actually using the
30:20
inertia of the rod yeah once you once you compress that rod on on the upswing
30:26
then really it does work yeah you're casting that Rod you're not casting a centerpin rod right as opposed to
30:32
centerpin lobing it you're lobbing it out but but both of them are you know what they're they're just another tool
30:39
to enjoy while you're fishing so I would say if you're curious about either one
30:45
try them both be a blast

33:12
podcast all right now I'm excited man this is the day you weren't excited before I was but this I've been waiting
33:18
for this all day ever since questions from our audience that should excite you did it did but this is like we're going
33:24
to be experiencing this I I know why uh Peter Fox Jo this owner uh of uh brand
33:30
Lodge Great Slave Lake Northwest Territories we haven't been there for almost 20 years oh my God it's been so
33:37
long Budd so long Bud uh welcome to the program buddy hi Peter talk to us can
33:43
you hear me can he we got you buddy we got you we got how you guys doing today doing good good thank you welcome to the
33:50
program man can you tell we're pumped can you like I'm trying to hold it back
33:56
but uh we are so excited to be back in your neck of the woods Northwest Territories uh in particular great Slave
34:03
Lake we we we spent several years shooting a great slave in the early part
34:08
of our careers but for whatever reason God that's been a long timeo unreal then
34:13
I think we gravitated The Great Bear a little bit and then we did some bear what else in the territory the one newon
34:21
is it that's now in nunev or maybe still in Northwest I'm not sure anyways but we yeah it's uh yeah we're back baby we
34:29
can't wait man we can't wait um but the interesting part we're excited to have
34:34
you back that's for sure a thank you man the interesting part about this as I mentioned earlier on in the program is
34:41
that uh we kind of came in the back door because what got us interested in in how
34:47
we found you in particular was that uh we were fishing in the uh Rocky
34:53
Mountains the Northeast sector of the Rocky Mountains and we were the reason we were there we were told that they had
35:00
walleye in the mountains and that's impossible you can have walleye in the
35:05
Rockies right anyways lo and behold we find out they do and more importantly that they can trace their Roots all the
35:12
way back down to the mouth of the McKenzie so that's what started us looking into you and uh and we found you
35:21
man you are responsible for all those fish that they've got in the Rockies
35:27
it's a great you're welcome it's a great fishery too I'll tell you the want to BC so if you got if you got anything close
35:33
to that oh man we're in for some fun I think so you'll I think we've got at
35:38
least the same maybe even a little bit better okay give us a bit of an overview
35:45
of the operation uh first of all how long have you been there how long have you owned
35:50
it uh so Bray B Lodge my family and I purchased it uh just in 2023 uh well
35:57
late 20 22 but the official takeover and all of that was 2023 um but I've been working here as a guide since um 2016 so
36:04
I've been up here you know better part of eight or nine years now um and I mean
36:09
it's just the greatest fishery out there I know you guys have fished all over but you haven't here no we you'll see it's I
36:17
mean there's a reason 90% of our guests come and say like you know we fished from Kalamazoo to Siberia and this is
36:24
still the best fishing we've ever seen wow oh man wow what a thing to say to us right now like we're not excited enough
36:31
you had to throw that in there that's awesome oh my God so you you you have to
36:36
excuse us when we sound so surprised that we're coming to the Northwest Territories in particular great slave to
36:43
fish for Walley because every time that we've been there years ago it was always lake trout lake trout lake trout bit bit
36:51
of railing some Pike we did Pike on um on the yellow
36:58
yeah so oh yeah okay so it's it's a bit unusual for us but um maybe you can kind
37:06
of explain because since we we scheduled the shoot all of us here um at fish in
37:13
Canada have been saying well how is that even possible that they don't have lake trout where where we're going like it I
37:21
can't even imagine what would keep the lake Tru away from your neck of the woods
37:28
yeah so we we do actually have some lake trout um there was a commercial fishery on great Slave Lake back in the 50s and
37:35
60s that um really put a dent in their population on this side of the lake you
37:40
know the East arm and the north arm of great Slave Lake really is a worldclass
37:45
lake trout fishing I mean you just can't beat it not even with a stick um but down here we seem to they're coming back
37:52
a little bit when I first started in 2016 nobody had caught a lake trout at
37:58
Bray band Lodge um because we're on the outflow of great Slave Lake on the MacKenzie River just you know 65 or 70
38:04
kilometers from Hay River um and there really was no lake trout like I said I caught one off the dock and the the
38:09
previous owner my mentor John Pard he told me he he'd never seen one here before um and in 2017 we caught another
38:15
one 2018 a one or two um 2019 I got a double header while walleye trolling and
38:21
then actually last year we probably caught 40 or 50 maybe wow um so it
38:27
doesn't see like really targetable but they do Happ to be in the river here and
38:33
there okay are they are they sizable like the lake or are they kind of a smaller strain um not really certainly
38:41
nothing like the East arm I mean you know the East arm they get them up to 40 50 pounds right um over here the biggest
38:47
one we've seen 15 17 pounds right um so still a great fish and I mean for
38:52
anybody from the south that's a monster right but for us up here and for great Slave Lake in general it's pretty pretty
38:59
normal um nothing really special um yeah the first one I caught back in 2016 it
39:04
couldn't have been excuse me it couldn't have been six pounds but a lot of them we seem to catch last year in the last
39:10
few years are between eight eight and 12 maybe 12 to 15 one guy last year caught
39:16
a 17 something okay um but nothing bigger than that is that a lack of deep water is that what the the the key to
39:23
that is I mean aside from theal I think on great slave and so far north the water is so cold all the time I mean you
39:29
know the ice is Flowing as we film this but uh you know in early June and even into July the water really doesn't get
39:35
over 45 degrees F W wow wow so the lake trout don't care deep or not it's it's
39:42
chilly right the wall I spawn last year actually caught one of the lake trout we caught oh my God go sorry about that TR
39:50
they caught they caught him in like two and A2 ft of water oh my god wow oh my God but you know like if it's 2 and 1/2
39:56
ft of water but it's 7° that's the same as deep right that's exactly what they want right what's the difference right
40:03
let's switch this over to to uh what the reason we're coming up is is your walleye fishery number one and you have
40:10
a tremendous northern pike fishery as we can see behind him in that picture right there that's right us talk to us this
40:18
fish over here actually is a world record the one on the top here really that fish is 24 lb yeah it was 24 lb
40:24
something ounces and was caught on a 2B tippet on on the Fly Rod a world record that stands to this day wow There You Go
40:31
Dino fly fishing up there now that's right wow that's right cool that is
40:37
awesome so what are we have to find when we get up there how how are we going to find these how many world records are we
40:42
going to catch in other words you know well it
40:48
depends on how you want to Target them but uh the way the records are kept now are weight and length yeah you know a
40:53
lot of the weight records are from 1940 1950 1960 so a lot of those are really going to be unattainable no matter where
41:00
you fish in the world for any species um but the length records actually are are pretty beatable in in my personal
41:05
opinion uh right now for the igfa at least uh the world record for length on a pike is 48 uh inches and my personal
41:12
best up here at brayan is 53 you just have to record it the proper way and then have it verified the right way so I
41:18
mean if you guys want to do that we can do that easy wow let me let me just let me just get are the same as well the
41:23
world record grailing right now I think it's 18 or 19 inches mm wow let let me just let me just get this
41:29
straight so you're saying that the world record now when you say world record that's a pretty broad statement world
41:37
record on what in terms of line in terms of a method of catching is it all tackle
41:44
or is it a certain it sounds like you're saying all tackle no so they're doing nowadays they do all tackle which is uh
41:51
weight length and up to 130 lb line um or and they're doing all tackle
41:59
what they call all tackle length so all tackle length is the overall length of the fish to the fork of the tail the shortest part of the fish um and the all
42:06
tackle length record is any they have fly fishing and conventional so the conventional one is a little bit larger
42:13
because that's usually just the way it goes yeah and that one's up to like 48 48 something uh inches long which like I
42:19
say I I've seen Plenty of Fish over cuz they're probably just doing that to you know lately right I would think well
42:26
this is the thing too though right have to record it the proper way and and send the information in and then have it
42:31
verified and go through the rig and all that stuff um and so plenty of people just don't right I gu I guarant but
42:38
either way we would be hanging in with some of the biggest fish out there for length at least that's for sure right I guarantee you we're not going to waste
42:44
time doing any of that we just want to go in there and Yahoo it up man we want to catch those monsters and release them
42:49
by the boat and all that good stuff so we're not into we're not into any recording other than other than in for
42:57
the fish and catada show how's that um question for you we're going to
43:03
be there in a couple weeks from now or what what three weeks guys three weeks to not even a month maybe yeah we're
43:10
there June 11 go so these fish will will be out of their spawn I'm assuming
43:16
they'll be out of their spawn what kind of staging will they be into will they be just on the on the feedback from from
43:22
the spawn they're going all of a sudden ripping into bait and stuff like that
43:30
oh hello he must have missed us did he miss us I don't know you hear me Peter
43:36
you get do you get me there's something going on with our connection conne we'll see if oh yeah
43:43
for for the pike they'll be just post spawned we might be catching barely the end
43:49
of for those of you listening we apologize for the uh the sound but we are yeah pet Northwest Territory Norwest
43:57
territories with this talking Santa Claus exactly
44:03
exactly um work on his connection while while we while we're getting it back on here um it's interesting because both of
44:10
you you and I had the same kind of feeling that 48 in although that's a
44:15
huge fish don't get me wrong 48 to the fork is 50 plus inch to the we've seen
44:21
those giant Northern from especially from uh Norway and and those places
44:27
where like they got to be like 60b 60 plus inches for sure but once again like
44:33
Peter just said you know they they you have to go through the rigoll of proper
44:38
measurement and all that stuff and a lot of guys especially with those big giant fish like that like you just don't want to do it they're they're just nasty in
44:45
the boat and you want to get them back in the water anyway so you got a me a proper measurement taking the pictures it may be stressful on the fish you
44:51
never know right so so we will not be doing that oh come on now we will not be measuring we will be guesstimating we'll
44:59
say there's a 7 I know that's why I knew you were up to something there there's a 90 yeah I knew you were up to something
45:05
there well it sounds exciting e oh my God I need to are you back Peter you guys hear me you me back we got you
45:12
buddy sorry um perfect sorry about that so far north internet right you're
45:18
talking about the coming off the spawn or or the timing that we'll be there
45:23
at yeah so the fish will really be finishing that spawn when you guys arrive or or a couple of days out of
45:30
that spawn and they'll just be Feed Bag on for sure you know the fish have sat through a long cold winter under a lot
45:36
of ice and uh once they've spawned out and they get their eggs and their Milt down where they need to they are just
45:42
feedb it's just time to go endless bites we always say you know if you can hit the water you're G to get a couple
45:48
trophies in the boat oh beautiful we talking predominantly shallow still
45:53
again I'm going to say yes but I'm they're just moving got be they got to be shallow the river is actually very
45:59
shallow generally the Mackenzie River's average depth is only 7 feet ah wow yeah
46:05
wow wow wow okay now you're talking makes sense we love that stuff look he's
46:12
having having a bit more issues I I got a feeling well hopefully there's nice cabbage beds they're emerging cabbage
46:18
and stuff like that that we can I don't know whether they'll have vegetation there do you think yeah it might not yeah you never know we've seen it up
46:24
North but I don't know how far north yeah huh they might not I mean we just might and I'm hoping that the water's
46:30
clear and we can actually see them that'd be nice wallowing that's got to be yeah I would think it's on the outlow
46:36
of the Mackenzie set right so it should be clean you would think right I would I
46:41
would like to think so but only only the guy on the other end of the camera could verify all of this we're having some
46:47
technical saying all this wrong guys you guys are so wrong on every exactly I'm going to make an assumption did he say
46:53
it was outflowing or in he said out he said the outflow of McKenzie think that's what he said right Dean did he
47:00
were you paying attention I think I was the only one paying attention this try get the tech figured out here all right sorry buddy I think he said the outlow
47:06
of the Mackenzie but I could be wrong on that one um yeah we got to ask some baits what
47:12
you hear me again gentlemen I'm sorry about the connection issues you're back no problem no kind of back but kind of not kind of um in in ter did you say
47:20
that this the McKenzie flows out into the lake at at your point or flows out
47:27
meaning up River does the lake drain out or does the river drain in the lake
47:32
drains out into us the McKenzie river is the drainage for great Slave Lake okay that's I was right see all right you're
47:40
always right you're always I paid attention to you Peter my boys here they're uh they're all daydreaming boat
47:45
big Pike and stuff and we're in the Arctic Watershed so it it flows straight North from here all the way to the
47:50
Arctic Ocean Peter what are we upt to be using for baits up
47:55
there um for lures I mean you could use whatever you want you could use a bare hook if you like we did that spoons and
48:03
Spinners work really good right I'm serious I've caught fish on open snaps before with no hook oh my God but yeah
48:11
spoons and Spinners work great you know silver minnows and stuff like that are always going to be Classics um paddletail swimbaits pre-rigged or or
48:18
you know something like 1 oz with a 6 in swim bait on it is always going to be a good lure but I really like the Spinners
48:25
um or you know things like slot Masters um but really honestly anything I mean
48:30
we catch them on truly everything up here I've seen guys catch them on beer cans I've seen guys catch them on orange
48:37
peels I've seen guys catch them on car keys seen guys catch them on like I say bare hooks that is awesome like you
48:45
could I mean oh yeah you could literally put anything into the water and you will
48:50
catch a fish on it that's for sure wow we use apples before apples actually make a really good top water you put a
48:56
you put your lure or your leader sorry right through it and you just clip a a treble hook on the back end really
49:01
really great top water that's awesome do they prefer green apples or do they like the Macintosh uh oh red red apples okay
49:10
red got be apples the whole way that's right and then when it gets a little torn up it's like a red and white right
49:15
there it is it's red and white there you go yeah it sounds like it's a a
49:20
Fisherman's Paradise one of those bucket list trips obviously so Peter was saying an that you like you're worried about
49:26
the in twitch bait but he said the 6-in swimbait so I think that 5in twitch bait will be it's got some bulk to it too right so we run a Yuri's got a great
49:33
twitch bait that they designed for saltwater actually the saltwater one might be better for us to bring up um
49:38
and it's just a basically a five five plus inch I think the saltwater one is you know it's just a nice it's like a jerk bait but it just it's a slow sinks
49:45
and it's just it'll drive them nuts I guarantee you it's going to drive them nuts I mean they will they will kill it
49:50
no doubt yeah um 100% now how about the walleye Peter we're going to we're going
49:55
to get walleye during pike fishing or is it a separate area how does that
50:01
work so yeah so the walleye really seem to sit in a few very specific areas
50:07
around us okay mostly where the current is a little bit faster um and the bottom is very hard but not super deep they
50:13
like to seem it sits sorry it seems like they like to sit between like five and N
50:18
feet of depth and in four to 5 mph current they like to sit in some of the
50:24
F water that we have wow but not quite as deep as some of the grailing water that we have right yeah and what are you
50:31
doing for those yes you can more what it is actually is that uh mostly trolling we can cast for them too with jigs but
50:38
you got to use pretty heavy jigs 3/4 oun 1 ooun jigs right to be able to hold bottom contact um but mostly we're
50:43
trolling or even really just casting we use a lot of crankbaits you know RI and wraps um rattle traps um you know medium
50:51
divers stuff like that anything that's going to be getting down there in that 5 seven 9 10 foot range um and it's got a
50:57
lot of rattles a lot of movement stuff like that is going to be the best we do a lot of trolling for them um but we
51:03
also then a lot of the times you can just stop trolling and cast toward Shore and and retrieve your um crankbaits and
51:09
you'll do just as well as on a troll right okay so it sounds like the walleye are over there because they want to stay
51:16
away from over here where all the pike are which makes a lot of sense so what I think so yes what are the pike feeding
51:22
on is it grilling so Pike really I mean they'll
51:28
eat anything that they can get their big old mths on that's for sure um but their main forage base here with us is
51:34
actually Cisco or you know tul whatever you guys whoever anybody calls them but it's Allis um yeah for sure they're
51:42
eating gring for sure they're eating walleye um and then into July as well we get White Fish Lake white fish that show
51:48
up um in the river and once those Lake white fish are in the river that is the Pike's favorite snack I mean once I see
51:55
a white fish I will not fish anything but brown and white for the rest of the SE right and I like fly fishing for for
52:03
the white fish too because they're such good table Fair um and and 95 98% of the
52:08
time when you hook onto a white fish there's going to be a pike that's coming up trying to take a piece of uh your dinner off of your
52:15
hook hey do you do you prefer you said something interesting to me being that you're in a walleye Lodge as well do you
52:21
prefer white fish over Walley to eat oh my God absolutely every day
52:26
really white fish is the best in my personal opinion white fish is the best
52:31
eating freshwater fish probably in the world wow I mean that stuff I tell you
52:36
man it's unfortunate because when you guys are up it'll be a little bit early for them most likely they'll not be
52:42
around um but they are just the best table fair in my opinion they're light
52:47
and they're flaky but they're still firm I I equate to a lot like a fish stick like a frozen fish stick out of a out of
52:53
a box but it's fresh fish that you just cut right now yeah yeah well I'll tell you you delicious you would not hurt our
53:01
feelings at all if uh if one or two of those were caught while we are there and we tried them out because I I think it
53:07
uh I've had it but not not to that extent did that I would not equate it to Walley yeah in terms of taste he's doing
53:14
something different he's doing a good job of his cooking of it for sure for sure wow anyway are they in season as
53:19
well up there like is everything open in the season wise when we get there oh yeah there's um not really
53:26
seasons in the Northwest Territories um you can um fish for everything all the
53:32
time pretty much at least where we are of course like the fishing rules are different across the entire territory so I don't want to speak too broadly right
53:39
but where we are yes every everything will be open absolutely when and you guys get here excellent um we we cannot
53:45
let this episode go by without talking about bugs what
53:53
because because we have seen videos that were shot at your place and um the odd
53:59
bug flying around there we see the odd bug looks like hummingbirds yeah there's one or two around sometimes for sure
54:06
yeah some of them are pretty big they might try to knock you down and take your wallet but um if as long as you're
54:12
you know used to being out in the bush you'll be okay are they are they like horse flies or or what are we dealing
54:20
with yeah we get horse flies we get blackflies you know some people call them Bulldogs or or whatever you want to
54:26
call them but we get two kind of two kinds of biting flies um that a lot of the time it's funny there's a lot of
54:32
them around when it gets warm outside but they don't chew on you a lot like the like the ones in Ontario do you I'm
54:38
from Southern Ontario and I've spent quite a bit of time in the karthas and spend some time up towards um Kim and
54:46
stuff like that and reason the black flies in Ontario they love to bite and they'll chew on
54:52
you like you get bit five or six times at once right up here it's interesting because they're bigger and there's more
54:58
of them but you only get the odd bite here and there I mean you're you're doing this getting them away from your head more than you are you know slapping
55:04
them off your hands or slapping them off your neck or anything like that but I tell you when the ones up here hit you man do you really know it that's for
55:11
sure ah thank you thank you Peter it was going so nicely like like it was like
55:18
you were reading me a bedtime story it was like a lullabi and then all of a sudden boom smack Peter's an honest Camp
55:24
owner but he's not a real good salesman I'm going to tell right now A friend of mine hey man you know
55:30
what if you're not in for the bugs I don't know if you're in for any fishing laun will be in a remote experience
55:37
catching giant fish in the middle of nowhere you're going to have to deal with some bugs and that's just the way life goes and tradeoff like you want
55:44
really big fish you're going to have a lot of bugs and that's just the way it is it's always been that way onario
55:50
Quebec yep Manitoba yeah it's going to be like that everywhere right you want untouched pristine Wilderness yeah
55:55
there's yeah yeah for sure for sure very well get that it's a tradeoff way she goes
56:01
right it's a tradeoff yeah what would you I mean it's just more food for the fish right exactly Peter if you would uh
56:08
if you could it's not predict if you could hope what would you hope the
56:14
fishing Canada team would come out with on footage wise uh Pike wise walleye wise or
56:19
whatever what do you think we can do there and what would you hope for I would hope that you guys have a yeah so
56:25
I would hope you guys have a CLE couple of days where you catch four plus maybe
56:30
five or six fish over 20 lbs for pike a couple of days of that yeah um for
56:36
walleye I mean it depends how much time you put in on the walleye but for walleye we get them up to about eight
56:42
pounds a couple of guys have claimed to catch 10 Pounders but I haven't seen pictures of those fish so I call them
56:48
eights right you know eight eight 8 and a half will be about where you tap out but if you want to catch 50 you can go
56:55
catch 50 whenever ever you want um as long as they're in sometimes they're a little sporadic coming in from the lake
57:01
but once they get in here you can go and catch 50 truly whenever you like the average size you're going to find is going to be a lot like Northern Ontario
57:08
that three to five pound range you know the perfect Shore lunchers oh man that's good and then for gring oh yeah this
57:15
perfect size fish right for gring it's the same kind of thing depends how much time you put in on them and and what the
57:21
weather conditions and the water conditions and the temperatures are like when you're here but uh same kind of
57:26
thing you know if you wanted if you spent half a day grying fishing and you did not catch over 40 I would be kind of
57:34
disappointed yeah and a lot of those fish are going to be over 16 Ines um you
57:40
know a lot of places they are they're they've got Great Arctic gr fishing that but they're talking you
57:47
know 12 14 15 16 inch gra right and I mean for us that's just nothing special
57:53
honestly um and that's not to put down any other place we're just very very lucky with what we have and we catch if
57:59
you guys went out grailing fishing a couple of days I would expect that anybody that puts a line in the water foring will get a 20 incher for sure oh
58:06
wow as long as you put in a little bit of time and a little bit of effort oh yeah for sure and somebody for sure will
58:11
run into a 22 plus incher maybe 24 25 if you're really lucky or really good those
58:18
are big grailing oh yeah weu we get some really
58:23
really big grailing here for sure um especially compared to some other places like in Alaska and stuff like that where
58:30
uh they just don't seem to get as big even in Yukon same thing they just don't seem to get as big but you'll find all
58:35
of The Lodges around great Slave Lake uh have really big railing whether it's north arm the East arm the southern part
58:41
where we are um everybody has really big grailing if you're connected to Great slave wow we've never targeted we' never
58:48
targeted no not really is it is it a fly fishing only thing for gring at your at your Lodge or no we can use our gear too
58:54
nope we catch them oh yeah we catch them on spinners all the time I would use I would bring like a pretty light uh like
59:00
walleye Rod to keep it sporty you like a thousand series um spinning reel with 10 PB or 8 PB line depending on what you
59:07
like um and then we always use fluorocarbon leader too they are a salmonid so they get spooky like a trout
59:12
yeah um if you've got a leader on um but yeah no we're just using reps number threes I mean you can cast and and we do
59:19
drifts for them as well where you just kind of like bottom balance the MS over the side and and we clean up doing that
59:26
are there any hook restrictions up there Peter uh in terms of barbs Northwest Territories is barbless only yep
59:33
barbless only by law um and I may be Miss speaking but I'm pretty sure that
59:38
the maximum number of hooks you're allowed is three so three trebles would be the maximum amount on the on the lure
59:44
um but for your own sanity and mine let's stick to two and it's better for the fish as well right yeah we can do
59:51
but territories is barbless by law no doubt there for the gring do um The
59:57
Lodge policy for grailing is single barbless hooks only just because they're sensitive fish um they're beautiful as
1:00:03
well and we would love to try and preserve them as much as possible you know the the the Pik and stuff of course
1:00:09
we care about the walleye of course we care about too but those guys are pretty Hardy right I mean especially in in cold
1:00:14
water you putut a pike down in 40° water usually like I'll I'll lower them over the side of the boat and as soon as that
1:00:20
fish is completely submerged it's gone right and I mean w like hell like w are
1:00:26
just difficult to kill unless you Bonk them on head yeah yeah right yeah you put them in a live well for two hours
1:00:32
and throw them back in the lake and they'll swim away right but for gring gring are pretty sensitive they're they're um they're delicate flowers for
1:00:39
sure um so our our lodge policy is a single barbless only whether on
1:00:44
conventional or fly or railing that's cool what are what's the retention of these fish is it a total release or is a
1:00:52
specific number do you have a camp policy do people even want to keep any of these fish uh what's what's the
1:00:59
policy so Arctic grailing um are not they're not um keepable at Brand
1:01:05
really a lot of fish we don't actually encourage anybody to keep fish here I know our business is called Bray band
1:01:11
Lodge sport fishing for a reason um we do really value sport fishing we think it's um really important in today's
1:01:17
changing world and in 20 years when our fishing has actually gotten better um will you know everybody will appreciate
1:01:23
why we've stuck with this policy of course you know if you want to have a fish dinner and stuff like that our professional chef will have it prepared
1:01:29
for you um we don't send people home with smokers we don't send people home with frozen fish we do not offer Shore
1:01:35
lunch every day um we really do value our fishery and not to say that anywhere that does these things does not value
1:01:41
theirs but we value our fishery uh in a way that we like to sport fish we like to put everything back um and and
1:01:48
everything goes back especially grailing and especially trophies um you know anything over 40 in Pike wise I mean
1:01:54
there's not a question there that it's going back and it's swi away yeah good for you yeah right I mean even even for
1:02:01
eaters if we're taking Pike to eat which if there's walleye I don't know why you would take a pike to eat but some people like them um our our policy for for
1:02:09
keeping Pike is only up to 30 in y perfect perfect that's a good eater
1:02:14
right there if you're going to if you're going to like you say though if you're going if you get a three-b walleye why would you you know a couple three-b
1:02:19
Walley why would you keep hike anyways so easier to cleanly right yeah sounds
1:02:24
like sounds like Paradise man it's we we are so if we could only turn the the
1:02:31
clock forward a few a few weeks man we you miss Vegas buddy you don't want to miss Vegas true it's CL this is close
1:02:38
yeah exactly so that's true I mean we always talk about this that it really is
1:02:43
uh almost impossible to oversell our fishing and you guys will see it and and and all of our viewers will see it when
1:02:49
the show comes out but I mean it really is pretty much impossible to oversell our fishing for size and number
1:02:56
that's awes we just get it done one of the biggest problems that most Lodge operators have is managing client
1:03:03
expectations so I'm going to ask you because like you just laid laid this out for us pretty nicely how do you manage
1:03:10
expectations for your for people to come and visit you I mean everybody's going to come up there and think they're going to get a 50 lb Northern by the way by
1:03:18
the way you're talking how do you manage that how do you how do you kind of keep them under control yeah so I try to talk
1:03:24
with the guests a lot about what they've already experienced um and what they've
1:03:29
already seen what their biggest already is um and honestly I mean we're certainly not getting 50 Pounders but
1:03:37
the number of 20 plus to 20 to 30 PB fish that we catch it it's really it is
1:03:42
difficult to overstate it honestly when I was guiding full time um like yeah when I was guiding fulltime uh my goal
1:03:49
every day was a minimum two fish over 20 pounds in the so I get for Pete and I'd
1:03:56
say okay that's Baseline for my job today wow wow what's the length of a of a 20 pounder up there this time of
1:04:04
year uh 40 44 Plus for sure okay um we get them up to 47 48 49 Ines pretty
1:04:11
consistently you know those 50 pluses are harder to find than you would think but the 48 we get them up to to 48
1:04:20
pretty consistently you know any anything between 20 lbs and 2 6 25 lb is
1:04:28
going to be 42 to 47 48 in and then once
1:04:33
you start pushing pack past 26 27 pounds that's when you're going to get into those upper 40 fish those 48s 48 and a
1:04:40
halfs 49s 49 and 3/4 stuff like that and even 50 pluses 52s right um a lot of
1:04:46
those 50 50 I would really say you could get a 50 incher that's not 30 lb but anything over 52 in is going to be over
1:04:54
30 lb oh yeah and then the audience need needs to realize that a 20 lb Pike is a
1:04:59
fish of a lifetime like it's it doesn't sound ah it's 20 lound now we're talking about 30s and 30 pluses 20 lb bike you
1:05:06
hold that more 20 pounder for us we call them little big fish because they are
1:05:11
really fantastic to catch and who doesn't want to catch a 21 pounder exactly sometimes you catch you catch
1:05:16
two or three fish in a row that are you know 25 26 27 lbs and then you see a 21 and you go well he's kind of small yeah
1:05:23
right I mean he's still a monster but compared some of those really big fish you're just going like yeah it could be
1:05:29
you could have some more shoulders you could have some more length you could be a little girthier there really do we're so spoiled yes that's the only word to
1:05:36
use to describe the fishing here at for trophy Pike that we really are just spoiled rotten hly I mean like I say I
1:05:43
come from Southern Ontario and I I I can't even pike fish in Southern Ontario anymore for How Could you um I'm going
1:05:51
to make an assumption then that there's not much involved in terms of electron IC uh for finding these we don't need
1:05:58
any of that stuff no the average depth of the MacKenzie River is only about 7t um so we don't we don't need we don't
1:06:04
need that where we're going right on okay so no electronics we to bring them right we're going to bring them just
1:06:10
because you know what maybe need is putting in perspective mode and looking for the pike laying that like you might be able to see those big long streaks in
1:06:16
there or something like that you know maybe or a pocket of Walley like Peter's talking about that might be something to
1:06:21
do and you know are we are we talking Clear Water Peter pretty clear it will depend on the on the wind conditions um
1:06:28
if the if it's really calm for for a number of days it will go the water will go like gin clear um right now the
1:06:35
clarity is really great because we haven't had a lot of wind um but yeah as long as the wind stays down you know
1:06:40
below like 25 kmers an hour um you will be you will be able to sight cast you will be looking at fish in six feet of
1:06:47
water you see them laying on the bottom or you you go you you'll see kind of like their outline if it gets a little
1:06:52
nasty you'll see the outline of the fish and go oh that's a that's a tree and then it starts swimming away right think
1:06:58
get it still gets us to this day we think we think of good ID Fish no problem all of a sudden no that's not a fish over there and all of a
1:07:04
sudden right no we have fished enough of those conditions um for me to make this
1:07:11
next statement cuz you're making it sound like your fish are always cranked
1:07:16
up and oh definitely well okay we've been to places one that comes to
1:07:22
mind and I don't remember exactly where it was but it was in a river river mouth
1:07:28
or was it a Back Bay we could see those big Pike in 6 fet of water but they wouldn't bite remember until we put a
1:07:35
chunk of whatever the the the I don't remember what what was used was it the Yellow Knife River cuz we were we were
1:07:42
there and they weren't biting they were in the laying of the mud exactly and we were putting the baits right on their noses before they' even sniff it that
1:07:49
was it I think that was it so you're saying your fish don't do that
1:07:55
unless it's really crappy out like you know it's really windy or really cold um
1:08:01
or really really hot um no they don't really do that um you know these fish in our River here you know the river is
1:08:07
such pristine perfect habitat for northern pike that um they just make hey while the sun shines right I mean
1:08:14
they're going every day of full bore the whole way through because they know tomorrow is one day closer to Winter
1:08:21
exactly point exactly by the way Peter will we be fishing great Slave Lake at
1:08:26
all or is it all in the river um we for for the pike we'll be
1:08:31
fishing all in the MacKenzie River there's a few spots we fish that are kind of like right on the edge of the
1:08:36
lake like right where the river starts um but we won't be fishing um like open water out on great s Lake we can give it
1:08:43
a shot if you guys have your electronics I've got a sonar too we can give it a shot for you know an afternoon or something like that for some Lakers too
1:08:50
maybe we find a 60ft hole and Mark some fish or drop some big tubes on their head and see what happens yeah but yeah
1:08:55
for pike fishing we'll be all in the river we'll be in back Bays we'll be fishing you know bus and Bank like you
1:09:00
would for for bass stuff like that cool nice what sort of uh temperatures are we
1:09:06
apt to be fishing in any idea um it depends on the year it's been it's been pretty chilly it was about
1:09:12
minus three this morning um you know it's it's it's miday now so it's kind of we're getting in the spring of or the
1:09:18
swing of spring um but in in about in June when you guys come you can expect it'll be I mean I don't want to say
1:09:25
it'll be not cold but it could be as low as 5 or 10° and as warm as 25° oh wow
1:09:32
depending on the day average I would say would be between 10 and 20° okay you know if the weather is normal and and
1:09:40
and regular for when you guys are here it'll be between 10 and 20 degrees every day beautiful Peter are your um are your
1:09:46
clients uh regulars or are do you have the I know I said I said this was the
1:09:52
perfect bucketless location and trip which means you know people would do it
1:09:57
once in their lifetime but do you have regular clients that have been coming over and over to experience what like
1:10:03
you just sold to us the Cornucopia of of uh of pike fishing I mean it doesn't get
1:10:09
any better than what you just said are they regulars coming in it does not get any better than Bray man Lodge oh yeah
1:10:15
we've had people that have been coming for more than 30 years oh um our our longest standing guests right now I
1:10:21
think um a gentleman from um where is he from maybe from Kansas I think he is uh
1:10:27
I think he's been coming for 33 or 34 years good for him good for him yeah oh
1:10:33
yeah that's awesome this the thing is is a lot of people and a lot of guys that we we have come up uh like
1:10:39
97 98% of our guests are returned every year um they come every single year
1:10:45
they've been coming for 15 years A lot of them at least um some of the New Kids on the Block at Bray launch have only
1:10:51
been coming for 10 years um and they just stopped going to other laun once they come to bran um a lot of guys that
1:10:58
have come you know they they've tried everywhere for Pike and they've tried everywhere for gring and they've tried everywhere for walleye and then they
1:11:04
come to bran and they say man you know we're just we're home and they've been coming ever since right so cool tell us
1:11:11
a little bit about the uh the lodge itself um what are people uh apt to what
1:11:16
can they expect when they come and stay for uh uh a week with you
1:11:22
guys so at brayan you can expect the it's we're full service American Plan um
1:11:29
we the way we like to explain it is a it's really it's a resort here at bravent that has the best fishing for
1:11:35
Pike in the world um you know you get full service we have a professional chef on staff that will prepare your your
1:11:41
breakfast every morning it'll be ready for you you know the fresh coffee orange juice you pancakes bacon and eggs eggs
1:11:47
benedict all that good stuff um and then we have box lunches made to order so you know it's kind of like subway except at
1:11:53
the lodge right so you pick your meat you pick your cheese you pick your veggies and you pick your sauces the chef will have it in your box for you
1:12:00
with a couple of cookies a square you know coffee thermos stuff like that to go out fishing um and then dinner will
1:12:06
be ready at 6 every day um we also have or deres when we come home from fishing so we fish from 8:00 a.m to 5:00 p pm.
1:12:12
and then when you're home at 5: there'll be or deres waiting for you whether it's Sherie board or um CL like a fish
1:12:18
chowder or or fish bites stuff like that they'll always be ready for you at 5: excuse me and then we have dinner six um
1:12:26
you know things like pork chops steak all that good kind of stuff you know home cooking with a with a nice
1:12:31
professional touch on top right and then actually you go back out fishing again from 7 till 10: p.m. every single day
1:12:38
because we're so far north especially through June and July we get the Midnight Sun um so we take advantage and
1:12:44
we're just like the fish we make hay while the sun shines right we fish for 12 hours a day every single day fully
1:12:50
guided the crew is going to hate you then because Pete and I will take advantage of every one of those 12 hours
1:12:56
but that means the boys are going to have to work extra hard so they they might not like this when to hear it
1:13:01
buddy yeah that's good by the time they see these coming exactly they're GNA have
1:13:10
world class footage there you go uh buddy imagine catching a a 15 or 20 PB
1:13:16
Pike at at 9:45 at night and it still looks like it's 10:15 or 10:30 in the morning cool very cool that is fantastic
1:13:24
can't wait uh can't wait Peter you could not have done a better job of selling
1:13:30
your operation to anybody that's listening because I'm sure that we aren't the only ones right now
1:13:36
salivating at the thought of being there at uh BR bent uh it's it's just it it it
1:13:45
it defies the whole fishing trip notion uh
1:13:50
if it's half if it's half as good as what you're saying it is uh once we get
1:13:56
it on the fishing Canada show it will um people will be absolutely Blown Away y
1:14:02
