Come along to our cabin in a while, because we're in for some good fishing
0:06
Feeling easy, feeling free. Yes, we're in for some good fishing, Canada
0:12
The Rocky Mountains to the Maritimes. Set your reel and cast your lines
0:18
Come on, let's go fish in Canada. River Creek, Lake or Street
0:30
Where in between Come on, let's go Fish in Canada The Fish in Canada show
0:37
is brought to you in part by My OutdoorTV.com Outdoor television on the internet
0:45
Stearns, the Lifejacket experts. The rocket fishing rod. And radioworld.com
1:00
Together we'll go fish in game. Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah
1:12
Over the years, I've experienced pretty much everything one could expect from the outdoors
1:18
I've caught just about every species of fish that swims, have walked on pretty much every continent, and had close encounters with a vast variety of wildlife
1:30
On this episode, we're going to add to that list. Catching fish for a living is a pretty good gig
1:45
But for me, the best part is the travel. Like on today's show, we're taking a train from a small settlement just east of Wawa, Ontario, called Hawk Junction
1:55
The train is one of the best ways to get to some of Ontario's hidden gems
1:59
No roads, no cars, only hundreds of miles of pure wilderness, which is where we're heading to Arrington's Wilderness Resort
2:08
a luxury lodge with five-star service and plenty of walleye, wildlife, and scenery
2:13
that will have you wanting to book your trip before this episode even ends
2:20
Errington's is a welcoming place, from the dock hands of waiting staff
2:24
to the variety of guests that visit here from all over the continent. We felt like family the minute we stepped on land
2:30
Good to see you. Angelo. Our host, Alan Dorse Erington, have created the ultimate wilderness getaway
2:36
It's got all the comforts of home. Wow. That's all people say, I'm sure, when they walk into this room
2:42
Spectacular. Just great. And we've heard nothing but good things about this place
2:47
The fishing is outstanding. The accommodations are obviously great. But the food, people are raving about the food here
2:55
We don't like two people to go hungry, actually. We like people enjoy their food. Okay
2:59
I have to tell you a little something. I've been on a diet for a while. So I've got to go easy on the food here
3:06
Well, we'll see what we can do it. It might be a problem over here. I always have a problem, believe me
3:12
So we're going to be fishing mostly for walleye and pike. Early in the season, obviously
3:18
How is it this time here? This is the best walleye time. This is lots of action for walleyes, just numbers
3:26
lots to eat and just you can catch walleye basically all day
3:31
On the way in, when we're coming in, you notice there's a lot of points and
3:35
humps and shoals and stuff. Obviously it's the regular hulae fishing, just find a rock
3:39
I think it's superior actually. We've got really great wallah habitat here
3:43
I mean, it's a very sheltered lake because of all the islands and bays and stuff like that
3:47
We have lots of reefs, sandbars, the freaks coming in. It's just like fantastic walleye habitat
3:55
My family bought this resort, it was basically a very run-down bunch of shacks back in 1975
4:03
It was pretty tough for the first few years. My dad was an iron worker
4:06
He kept iron working in the winters to keep things going for the first few years
4:11
He always had the dream of just having a place where he could hunt and fish whenever he wanted to
4:17
and make money at the same time. We found out very quickly is that this is a lot of work
4:22
and you don't fish when you're doing it. We had a lot of rustic cabins when we first took over the business
4:31
And that was good for people that just wanted to come and fish and do nothing else
4:36
So they were basically sleeping in the cabin and fishing pretty much all day
4:41
But times have changed now. And everybody enjoys those comforts and the ambiance that goes with it
4:48
So the cabins are log cabins. There's indoor plumbing. There's hot and cold running water
4:53
it's a place where you can actually go and you can spend time in
4:59
We have Adirondack chairs at the end of our docks and that in itself is an experience just to be able to go and sit down at the end of the dock
5:06
and just enjoy the scenery. You consider ourselves a wilderness vacation resort
5:13
which means it a place to come up and really enjoy everything there is about nature We fishing and enjoying shore lunches and that kind of stuff to watching bear and moose and learning about ospreys and eagles and looms
5:26
it's a whole diverse experience. It's really getting in touch with nature
5:30
And I think for the most part, people are really missing that in today's world
5:34
We're finding more people are just disconnected from nature. We get you over there
5:42
You good? Yeah, good. We're all set to go here. Who-hoo-hoo! Where else can you catch fish this back
5:48
A million of these out here. A million! We have a lot of fishermen that come in the spring
5:54
and then we start going into families in the summer. But the thing I find the most is we get a lot of related individuals
6:04
So we'll get fathers, grandfathers, grandsons, families will come up. That will be multi-generational as well
6:13
And I think it's just a wonderful opportunity, especially when you've got children that you can actually put them into a boat where there's no other distractions and then you get to have the opportunity to know them
6:27
Children that used to come up 20, 30 years ago, are now coming up with their kids
6:31
So it's a wonderful experience. This is a very, very easy lake to fish
6:38
For people, first time on the lake, they used to get a guide for about a day or a half day just to get them oriented, get them
6:43
and into the fishing techniques that work really well on this lake
6:48
Get them oriented on the lake a bit. But it's shallow fishing. It's very easy fishing
6:52
They learn it very, very quickly. So they just get into it very, very quickly
7:00
Our repeat guests that have been coming up for a long time, we have guests have been coming up for 30, 40 years
7:05
So they know this like some ways a lot better than I do even
7:09
So they don't bother with guides after a while. just because the fishing is that easy to do
7:16
Come on, buddy. Got them. That's a fish you want to eat right there, but that's a perfect size eating, isn't it
7:24
We are train in or plane in only, and we use a local air service, hawk air
7:33
to deliver our guests in by plane, and they can pretty much decide whenever they want to come in at whatever time
7:41
as long as it's daylight hours. And with the train, we have three days per week
7:47
that we have the train coming in, and people can come either from Sioux Saint-Marie
7:52
or they can drive up along Highway 17, which is highly recommended
7:57
because the scenery is so gorgeous between Sioux-St. Marie and Wawa, and then they can catch the train in from Pock Junction
8:05
Now what they also can do is they can also train in and fly out, or they can do vice versa
8:11
We're a fairly small resort, and we like it that way because we like the intimate atmosphere
8:16
We like to get to know our guests and really interact with our guests. So a big week for us is like 35 people, 35, 40 people, and we can really take care of them
8:27
We're operating on two islands on the lake, and they're only about five minutes apart by boat
8:32
And we have our cabins all distributed along the shoreline. So all our accommodations are very secluded, and they have great views of lake, home private docks
8:41
It's in very, very comfortable. Nice walleye. Get them over inside here
8:50
Part of the wilderness experience is exploring a lake and searching for what might be the perfect honeyhole
8:56
There he is. Right where he should have been. Hey, that's my fish
9:01
Right where he should have been on Ivan's Rock. I told you, you're not allowed to cast here
9:07
Oh, that's a nice eye. Hey, that's a beautiful. Those are better quality
9:11
Here's the ones we're going to be eating for lunch in about an hour. I think so. Hey, hey, hey, hey
9:15
Oh, come on. What are you doing? What are you doing? Yeah, I got one. Woo
9:20
Look at that! That's a nice one. You are a goon! Oh, I lost it
9:25
You are a goon of goons. That was my fish. That's a big one
9:32
Oh, man. You're a goon of goons. I wanted to get that one
9:37
Mike and I spent a day running from one end of the lake to the other in search of catch a in search of catchable walleye and sharing a few laughs along the way
9:46
I didn't know that's how you put leeches on. So what do you do? Get him to suck a little bit of your blood first
9:51
Yeah. Now, the trick is getting it from there to that hook
10:00
That's the trick. What do you do? Put it through your hand? Well, you can't go
10:03
Oh. He's got me. Oh, okay
10:14
Now watch, you watch it? You watch it? Yeah, oh, yeah. I don't know anything about physics or not
10:19
You see this under the boat to point into the boat? They didn't put that on there because they ran out of square ends, all right
10:25
They put it out there because that's supposed to be the front! Okay? You are in the front
10:30
I'm fishing in the back. And we're going backwards. Oh, it's a strategy
10:34
It called back trolling You see use the resistance on the flat porch on the boat to slow you down How am I supposed to fish from here How am I supposed to fish Oh buddy
10:44
Might be a pike. No, it's got a bit of a head shake. Oh, that's a walleye
10:50
If I ever seen a walleye? No, no, it's got to be a pike. Walleye pike. Yeah, it's a pie
10:54
Oh, it's a pike. No. Yeah. Are you sure? Oh, yeah. Why eat a man
11:01
I saw some white there. Yeah, it's a spotted. Did you see spotted walleye
11:05
Did you see it? Whoa. Long-nosed mountain trout. No, seriously. Did you see him spotted his tail
11:13
No. Not. That's an irrespectable little gator. That is a nice gator on six-pound line
11:21
Oh, it's okay. Just go ahead and fish there. I don't need a hand, buddy. Let me get one here
11:27
I don't need any help, buddy. It's okay. Oh, okay, then, fine. Get the net out here, you do
11:35
Bring them back here. I'll show you how to land them. Saw this on TV once. Here
11:42
That's the last jig I've got in yellow. Oh, really? Yeah. It's the last one
11:51
I see the head, jig head's still sticking out a bit. Where is he
11:55
I don't want to stand up. It's dangerous to stand up in the boat. Bring them back, buddy
11:59
Oh yeah. Head first. Into the net, folks. He's backing up. I got him
12:04
Wow, it's a chunky pike. Wow. Take it easy. That is a nice gator
12:12
Oh, watch your finger. Nice one. Thanks for the jig, buddy. He herded my finger
12:23
Good word. Hey, he'll give me blood brothers. See you going. Look on him coming out of you
12:28
Oh, I thought he was coming out of me. Look at that. I got a fish right in the rocks
12:33
No way. Any size? Not a bad little Walter. I got your lunch right here
12:40
Wow, I've never seen it. Have you ever seen a golden nest? No. I've never
12:44
That's a first. Well, usually I thought they were up on cliffs, but I guess that could be considered a cliff
12:49
That is a first, man. Look at that. Look at how deep this fish ate that jig
12:55
Don't do you ride this at home, folks. He's a train. professional
13:01
Every one of these fish is snapping that bait and I'm catching them in the front lip
13:10
They're twins, triplets, quadruplets. Good old pickrels. People at home be going crazy watching this show
13:21
Why aren't they keeping some of those to eat? Why do you see the shorelots we have
13:27
Not your traditional one, I tell you that. Once Angie and I figured out what the wallite were doing on the late, it was pretty much child's play
13:36
They are a beauty fish, though, huh? Awesome. We would use the wind to our advantage, back-trolling and drifting across points that had huge boulders
13:45
We would simply cast our jigs to the backside of rocks and get slammed by aggressive walleye in the odd white fish
13:52
Now I got you figured out. Susan Katz duck. Whoa! Now I got you figured out
13:59
Oh, that's a nice one. That's the monster, boys. Boy, you might want to put a net under that speaker
14:04
There's another one. Double header, brother. We found it. There's stacked in there
14:08
He found it. I got a good one on end. Oh, yeah, that's the next
14:16
Look at the size of this thing. Oh, these are great. Look at them. Whoa. Look at that
14:21
Want the net, buddy? Nope. That's not net worthy yet. Double header. Just like that
14:26
Back to back. Look at this thing, Mikey. Look at his. That's a nice wall
14:32
It's cute. Man, oh man. And they're stacked right behind this one boulder
14:36
It's got to be a little bowl or something in there. They are just lined in there. Beautiful
14:43
That was awesome. That was great, right. You found a little spot
14:50
Two or three times I can't. I just was going to tell you. Yeah, yeah
14:54
I'm just going to tell you, I said. Oh, I'll bet you were. I'll bet you were
14:58
Oh, I'll bet you were. I'll bet you were just about, send me a telegram
15:03
Yeah. I watched it. I lost you. We haven't been here for, I don't know, 10 or 15 minutes
15:09
caught a few stragglers and then, wham! You always find that spot on the spot
15:17
I just both two out and just got a nice one. What was that? Two, three pounds at least
15:23
Mike and I were told not to bring back any fish and to definitely not snack on the boat
15:28
We were to meet the crew and some other guests on an island for a gourmet shore lunch
15:35
Hey? What's on the menu? This is the way a shore lunch should be, buddy
15:39
That's man. Look at this. All ready for no washing fish. Steak and baked potato and apple pie
15:46
What a trip. Great fishing gourmet meals Everton Wilderness Resort is truly a wild experience Yeah because it just might be Wow
16:18
So they came by the way. No, it doesn't get any better than that, boys
16:22
It just does not agree. It just does not exist. Nope. Let me tell you
16:27
Talk about a feast. That was one of the most memorable lunches I could recall in a long time
16:33
and the overwhelming temptation to head back to the lodge and take a nap was creeping in
16:42
However, after lunch, we were promised that we would get the royal tour of the lake
16:46
and be witnessed to one of the most surreal wilderness encounters either of us has ever had
16:52
We were going to have dessert with black bears. I hope they didn't mean be dessert
17:00
Now, what are they eating? They're picking through the stuff. They seem to be very selective. They're looking for the sugary stuff like carrots and stuff like that
17:06
They like potatoes. They also like the fattier fish, actually. Every once in a while, we'll, somehow, bring in a sucker
17:11
and they love the suckers. This keeps the attraction off our island and over here
17:19
And a great way to get rid of waste. Yep. You know, I mean, think about it
17:23
In the cities, we've got this whole ecosystem set up where we're disposing of our compostable, compostable products of one bag
17:32
Here's the way to do it. Well, I call them black bear composters. I mean, if I could sell it somewhere
17:37
No kidding. This was too much, standing inches away from a black bear in her cubs
17:44
while they dined on rations from the camp's kitchen. Now, keep in mind, this is not offered to regular guests
17:50
viewing a photography is encouraged only by both. Now, do you ever get any aggressive males coming into an area like this
17:58
or you're pretty much mom and the kids? Pretty much, the males, they kind of wander through
18:03
The females will stay in one area, so we get to know them. Males will wander through
18:08
We had a big male here a couple days ago. I'd like to see him again, actually
18:12
Well, maybe not. He's twice as big as she is. Wow. What a great idea
18:17
So all your garbage. All the food waste, yeah. the food waste gets consumed by the bears. That is fantastic. And it keeps them away from camp
18:24
you were saying. We have no smell because we take it out every day from the whole resort. We
18:28
have no smell over at the resort to attract the bears over there. Wow. And even if they do
18:35
I mean, they'll occasionally come over to the island, but they don't find any food, so they won't come back. Could we show the audience exactly what the deterrent is? It's a rake
18:45
This is the best bear intimidation tool I've ever found, actually, is a nice big leaf rake
18:52
This one's getting worn out a bit. I've hit bears a few times with this one, so they've never chewed on it, though, actually
18:58
That's not where the teeth are missing. It's just that it's starting to get worn out from scraping
19:04
But it's a very intimidating thing for black bear these rakes. Plus, actually, you've got to have attitude, too
19:12
Isn't that crazy? What a great way to break. up your fishing day to come out here and check
19:17
He's a great. How long you've been doing it? Oh, I don't know, actually
19:21
It's got to be 10, 12. Oh, more than that, actually. Probably 15 years or so, actually, we started
19:25
doing this. Well, I think we better give them the rest of the food and let them do their
19:29
thing. This is fantastic. We really appreciate you sharing this with us, man. No problem. I have a pleasure
19:33
doing it. Oh, she wants the good stuff. Yeah, she wants the good stuff
19:38
Fish in Canada hot spots. The Ultimate Fishing Guide presents getting there
19:45
Today's hot spot is a rock pile called Castle Rock. Deep water surrounds it and
19:50
walleye lurk in the dark crevices waiting for an easy meal. Live bait is a sure
19:55
bet, but try casting crankbaits over the top when the wind is blowing. For more
