this episode of Outdoor Journal radio is brought to you in part by the invasive species Center protecting Canada's land
0:13
and water from invasive species and sale the ultimate destination for your
0:25
Adventures it's gone almost unnoticed but over the past last 20 years the
0:31
Great Lakes of North America have undergone a change of unimaginable
0:37
scale quadrillions of tiny invasive muscles have quietly expanded ever
0:43
deeper Into the [Music] Depths they're devouring the bottom of
0:51
the food chain sucking the life out of the world's largest freshwater environment
1:01
but their insatiable appetite has had an extraordinary side effect it's made the
1:13
[Music] clear around the world we're seeing fish populations in a spiral Decline and it's
1:20
really easy just to point the finger and say that's happening somewhere else that's not happening here but in reality
1:27
it's happening right under our nose [Music]
1:32
this was a unique food web that had been established since the last
1:39
glaciation we saw the lake changing before our eyes we just see a carpet of muscles on the bottom of the legs in a
1:46
week's time every gallon of water in Lake Michigan could have passed through a
1:52
muscle it's my opinion that invasive qua muscles have been the biggest change in
1:58
the Great Lakes ecosystem really going back since the [Music]
2:03
glaciers become part of a mission to bring life back to the depths that will
2:09
challenge everything you thought you knew about the freshwater ecosystems we all depend on clear water from an
2:17
aesthetic perspective people kind of LED that but from an ecosystems perspective it really means nothing's there
2:22
nothing's growing and learn how this tremendous
2:28
problem just might be our one chance to restore the long lost ecosystem of the
2:34
Great [Music] Lakes it's not too late we can change
2:41
this but we need to act [Music]
2:57

3:50
about a year ago maybe a little bit more than a year now Dean will correct me if I'm way off a little bit less that's
3:57
that's what I thought you'd say that's why I went more because I don't want to sound like we're always agreeing because then it would be like a well rehearsed
4:03
well-oiled machine I don't want to come across as that a podcast right this it's not a radio show right we can let loose
4:10
a little bit here suffice to say they have been on the show before and and they unveiled to us this H new form of
4:19
underwater uh uh cinematography that they were embarking in and and their
4:25
storylines and what they wanted to do and their intent like and we' got so excited back then because the imagery
4:31
that they were showing us was breathtaking but we had no idea that a little less than a year ago
4:38
as Dean told us uh we would be here telling you that we we had the privilege of uh viewing some of their stuff
4:45
yesterday oh my God spectacular as as Outdoors people as

6:36
be Nick put in an order of that's a bunch of [ __ ] shirt which normally a
6:41
bunch of [ __ ] thank you uh which normally has a little tiny Outdoor Journal Radio podcast logo at the very
6:49
bottom of the shirt and uh somehow
6:55
somebody got it all backwards and took that tiny little logo at the bottom and
7:00
put it here and wow in quite a large format as well I know well and uh so uh
7:07
maybe what we should do and Nick do we have any of that stuff left or is it all gone now just wave at me what do you
7:14
think is it yeah it's apparently all gone so I was going to say maybe we should just charge we brought some to

8:44

8:51
from Ryan Anderson via email that's info@ fishing canada.com come on now you
8:57
said it uh he uh it's a lengthy one so sit back and and
9:03
enjoy why are you laughing no I sit back and enjoy I sit back and enjoy uh so uh
9:09
uh Ryan Anderson via email says episode 135 Angelo me and Joe Ford discussing
9:17
the upcoming uh PanAm Derby we were there uh two weeks ago just happened uh
9:23
and he goes on to say you guys are doing a massive disservice to all competitive anglers in
9:30
Atlantic Canada with your discussion uh you suggested that the
9:36
professional Anglers coming to the derby can unlock these Waters of New Brunswick
9:42
better than guys who have lived here and fished here their entire lives Angelo
9:49
that's me uh you specifically state that the New Brunswick fishery has not seen
9:57
intelligent fishing pressure and hasn't seen really good Anglers that understand
10:03
patterns and understand fish now there's a lot more to this but I want to stop right there right now just so that we
10:10
can deal with it so I'm going to go back to uh I'm going to say the mid
10:17
80s here in Ontario and we a handful of us guy by the name bab
10:25
isumi you might have heard of him uh we sort of uh got together and started
10:31
fishing uh we all loved bass fishing but we wanted to get together and and take
10:36
it up a notch so we decided that we should maybe do our own bass tournaments
10:42
Derbies let's do some deres Derbies where we would throw in a 100 bucks each and win or take all at the end of it and
10:48
we had a great time for a couple of years and and uh the problem was that
10:54
you know we we didn't grow the way we thought we should we didn't expand our
11:01
knowledge of bass fishing especially professional bass fishing the way we
11:07
should uh because quite frankly you know we had grown as much as we were going to
11:13
grow being exposed to our own inner circle in terms of knowledge and
11:20
understanding and how- toos and all that stuff and then a wonderful thing happened and I'll never forget it a man
11:26
by the name of Al Linder in the late 80s uh decided to come to Canada and
11:34
participate in some of our tournaments I remember the one I remember the one on R lake lake yeah him and Ted kapra him and
11:42
Ted CA I remember very well because one of the most incredible things happened to me that weekend I learned that in as
11:51
much as we were passionate and we had a love for bass fishing I learned that our
11:57
growth had had and we've been fishing serious bass fishing for between the
12:03
bunch of us collectively for a 100 DEC 100 years you know I mean you put it all
12:09
together I learned that weekend that Al and Ted
12:14
came up and put on a clinic I mean put on a clinic uh for us
12:22
oh yeah they won that to exper they didn't win it they destroyed all of us
12:28
mhm in terms of the tournament results yeah and I learned that day
12:34
that we thought we knew [ __ ] thank you what we thought we knew was bass
12:42
fishing it wasn't it was a very small portion it was bass fishing but it was a very small portion of B it wasn't until
12:49
that day that we all understood holy crap there is a lot more to this thing
12:54
that we love than what we knew I I'll very I'll give my take on what an is talking about
13:00
on that situation because Mike burus and I fished that same tournament that an fished and after day one when they came
13:06
in with this massive bag of fish we thought what the hell what are they doing they don't they don't ever reveal on day one but the day two they revealed
13:14
what they were doing I I witnessed day the end of day one I witnessed what they did day one I told you but I didn't see
13:21
that so and then they said they were out fishing deep weed lines out deep we were all within 30 ft of the bank the whole
13:27
Canadian crew was was in there smashing the pads smashing the reads doing all the shallow junk stuff and all that
13:33
stuff he's out in the middle of the lake there's no way in hell he's out in the middle of the lake little did we know
13:38
the major population of laral bass at that time were out in the middle of the lake and when I say we we knew cuz we
13:44
had ringside seats to this happening Reno and I were fishing a shallow water flat behind a
13:52
very popular Island on Rice Lake that that you know there was probably about four or five boats we were all in four
13:59
to 5 foot flat dunking you know dunking into the weed growth that was just like
14:05
a m mted up crap because that's where we always fish cuz that's where we learn to fish that's where you caught fish there
14:12
now then you get a 15 lb bag 16 lb bag you know yeah and it was a big deal so uh so towards the end of day
14:19
one we're dunking away and we had maybe maybe we had our limit I don't even remember but it's it was irrelevant
14:25
because we had small fish incomes this American boat and and we had not
14:33
officially met Al and Ted yet we knew of him because of course this is allander
14:39
of the INF fisherman Fame back then it was like he was the god in fishing in the world not not just Canada or us or
14:47
Japan or whatever he was the man and anyways they come drifting it
14:54
was like it was like a a God on a chariot in a movie you know just
14:59
just they drifted like full I say drift they they were full speed and then Ted
15:06
who's at the helm he eases it back and as he's easing the boat back it comes down off plane just a little bit of
15:13
spray coming out and and and and Al jumps out of the seat and as the boat is
15:18
coming to a stop Al is already deploying the electric motor out front and as he's
15:24
deploying the electric motor out front him and Ted pick up their rods and they make could cast in what we thought was a
15:32
total void area it had no fish like Pete said they were fishing the deep edge of
15:39
the weed line in the main Basin of Rice Lake thought minimum of minimum of 8T
15:45
deep or deeper or deeper no this was like 12 to 14 yeah and we thought wow that's kind of dumb I thought they knew
15:51
what they were doing before we had an opportunity to to to even clue in on
15:56
what was going on they had a double header on right there where we had been ignoring
16:02
for all of our Lives we ignored we didn't even know that there was fish there so true we learned that day um we
16:11
learned that day and and I apologize to anybody that I may have
16:17
offended but we learned that day Ryan Anderson that what we witnessed was
16:24
intelligent fishing pressure that's when I first heard that terminology and
16:31
that's what I've been maintaining not just in Eastern Canada or western Canada
16:37
or upper us or the Midwest in us any place where you have got a population of
16:44
fish that have not been exposed to I don't want to belittle once again
16:50
the the East Coast Anglers at the time that I made that comment but you equate
16:55
to what we were when we were first exposed to this american professional
17:02
anger we thought we and we did we knew enough we we were well-versed in our own
17:09
little world and so we thought you know between him and the Zumi and and
17:15
Crawford and mlin and all of these other names that I'm throwing out there that are all went on to become something in
17:22
the fishing indust we thought amongst us we knew everything there was to know about bass fishing that day we learned
17:30
we knew nothing and yeah it's a little bit humiliating and yeah it was a little
17:38
bit embarrassing for sure but the most important thing is that most of us if
17:43
not all of us came away with a whole new oh man did I ever learn to fish weed
17:49
Lions after that tournament oh my God I could not believe I said what in the hell is going on here why are these here
17:56
remember do you remember your first time after that going out to those weed lines I don't remember my first time but I
18:02
remember some of my my later on times where I said I won't even fish allow
18:07
water ever again in my life cuz it there was so many fish it was crazy you just you don't have to you know work hard in
18:13
we learned that you could just cast a worm just gently cast a worm and not far you know what was your favorite worm
18:20
there you have culprit you had CAD colored 6 in culprit worm you know why
18:25
because that's what Al was using the day we were we were throwing craw at the time the little was a little craw worm
18:31
and it was killer too so and and and and you just gently and it was like sing around let her drop down
18:38
whatever you know monofilament line yeah and that's where the fish were oh man
18:44
were they that's where the and then so so that was lesson number one
18:50
because we thought we knew what we were doing but intelligent fishing pressure told us different and then it happened
18:57
again in the early 90s and this time it wasn't an American Big Shot coming in it
19:05
was a Canadian Superstar in the name of bab isumi taught us
19:11
another lesson because we inadvertently found out where he had spent the last
19:17
two or three years fishing that we had no idea winning everything winning everything yeah we had no idea but
19:25
intelligent fishing pressure revealed that we were fishing the wrong
19:32
everything so I only waste this time to
19:38
uh give you these two very important stories because I first of all apologize
19:44
if you took it as offensive it was not meant to be I have been on the receiving end of that most of my life when I see
19:51
something new when I see something exciting when I see something that I learned from I call myself
19:59
somebody lacking the intelligence to know that fish are not here they're over
20:04
there so I didn't mean it in a negative manner but intelligent fishing pressure
20:11
is exactly what you got in your neck of the woods during this uh PanAm
20:17
tournament series we had the privilege of watching is that the one no
20:24
I'm sorry where was he right here yeah Pete and I had the privilege of
20:30
watching that young man uh and the one right in front of him with C pants right in front of him and Scott Martin we had
20:38
the privilege of watching them during this event and man oh man did we see some
20:47
intelligent fishing pressure on the East Coast yeah yeah they did good it was
20:53
great it was exciting so maybe the term intelligent fishing pressure might
20:58
offend some of you out there obviously uh one for sure uh but it was not meant
21:04
in a negative fashion at all and uh you have to appreciate the fact that the
21:10
East Coast and its bass fishery are behind where say the and I don't want to
21:18
make this a geography thing but behind where say
21:24
Ontario Bass Anglers are and who are probably probably still behind where
21:30
Southern us bangers Anglers are so there's always going to be somebody who
21:36
has got a little bit more fishing intelligence for a certain
21:42
species at a certain time in a certain pattern that we can learn from always going to be don't take it as a negative
21:48
take it as a learning opportunity did I do good you're' done good kid that's all I can say about that
21:54
you know what and that's and ending on that point is that it's a NeverEnding pool of knowledge you can't you cannot
22:00
you will die with more fishing things that you don't know about in your head you know what I mean I'm I know I'm trying to learn all the time all the
22:07
time all the time and I'm just chipping at that Iceberg that's all I'm doing it's just chipping away you know there's so much more behind there so and when
22:13
you go into a community that has not I'll use the word exploited once again don't take that word negative when you
22:20
go into a community that has not yet learn to exploit a species of fish
22:26
exploit in the sense it that you enjoying it for recreational activities
22:31
when you go into a community that's not yet exploited that fish I get giddy with excitement because
22:39
I say those fish have not been exposed to intelligent fishing pressure yet and that's what I meant by that comment I
22:46
get excited in giddy because it's a great opportunity for the local folks to learn something and help it with their
22:55
enjoyment of the recreation called Ang I remember going to um the St John River
23:02
Musky fishing for the first time a few years ago and speaking to local musky
23:07
Anglers who had been you know fishing musky for five six seven
23:14
years at this point and how hungry they were for dialogue about how musky behave in
23:22
other parts of the world because they knew that by learning about mus Behavior
23:29
you know say in Ontario or Wisconsin or any place else that muskys Prevail they
23:35
knew that by learning from other folks it was going to help them with their
23:41
Musky fishing and bass fishing is no different true it's no different there was more um opportunity to learn during
23:50
the uh PanAm um Black Bass Championship um in New Brunswick a few
23:56
weeks ago then there probably will be for the next 30 years and it was all there because there was intelligent
24:02
fishing pressure the problem how do you learn from that though that's the problem well they might learn through
24:07
the fishing Canada episode that we shot but we we watch these guys that's the only way you can really learn is to watch
24:12
them you know the the the Linder story on Rice Lake you know what happened after that event right I told you you
24:20
told him he told him and and boom all of a sudden everybody discovered deep water
24:27
weed lines and weed points on Rice Lake it wasn't that we were all sitting in a
24:32
theater watching Al put on this this demonstration it was the fact that it spreads and I think what's going to
24:38
happen in Eastern Canada I think all those special moments that you and I
24:44
experienced are going to everybody's going to be talking about
24:50
it and that's growth there is nothing wrong with that I'll put my hand up I'll
24:55
put my hand up and say I learned I learned something during that event oh
25:01
yeah on the St J River I learned from better Anglers than myself and there's
25:06
nothing wrong with saying that there is absolutely nothing wrong with saying that better Anglers than myself not from
25:13
this part of the world that came into our country they taught me
25:19
something I'm not embarrassed to tell you that don't be embarrassed when I say
25:24
intelligent fishing pressure please it's not meant in in a negative or derogatory
25:30
fashion at all good end of story on let's move
25:35
on uh conservation Corner the grass
25:40
carp speaking of invasive species which our later our guests have a lot to do
25:47
with in that oh my God right different oh yeah it's all the obviously one of
25:53
four we've talked about this time and time and time and time again one of four species of Asian carp that are threatening our Great Lakes which we're
26:00
going to talk a lot about today Great Lakes and and then obviously the tributaries that come in and out of the
26:06
Great Lakes too right so uh this one is the grass carp which we've been harping on for years as well it was introduced
26:11
uh to the southern us to control aquatic plants and how ironic that today it's
26:19
looked upon as the demise potential demise of aquatic plants who knew uh
26:27
they can eat up to 40 % of their weight each and every day and it doesn't matter
26:33
whether they're 5 lb or 105 lb 40% is all we need to key in on 40% of their
26:40
body weight in Greens and they're destroying that's those are the greens that the Z Plank and that the little
26:46
baby fish that the minnows and then of course the perch the pike the bass the trout everything else need to survive
26:53
right they need that for for um their food source too so that's like you eating 40 lb a
27:00
day 45 lbs a day no no it's 40% of their
27:05
body weight so okay yeah yeah you're right yeah 40 lb I'm giving you the benefit of doubt that you're only
27:11
weighing 110 lbs these days gez I wish I got I used to well SC the gym is broken according
27:18
to their scales at the gym I'm up to 140 and I've never been to 140 in my life and I know that scale is full of [ __ ]
27:25
Jean did you I had a problem with the scale too I'm like 19 right now are you serious yeah so
27:30
apparently I gain 10 to 15 pounds we gained on that on our I come back I come
27:37
back to Dean I says by the way Dean have you been on that new scale at at the the gym and he goes yeah why I says well I
27:43
gained 20 pounds on this trap no but yeah it was it was 20 lbs compared to the old scale they had at other part of
27:49
the the gym I I says I know I drank a few beers and I ate a lot of you know desserts and [ __ ] but I don't know if I could gain 20 lbs in a trip like that a
27:56
little guy like me so so that's a lot of weight for you to gain so I didn't the the scales are
28:04
obviously off the same thing Tim bits and stuff though we did do the Tim bits
28:10
at us we did but I had another young lad I said we were standing right by that scale and I said to this guy said dude
28:15
just get on there and he went on and went right over 220 something pounds he say no this is not right so everybody's
28:22
freaking out so can't they can't be right because this guy's stock stacked but he's not and stocky but he's not 220
28:28
lbs anyways I was giving him the benefit of the doubt one I'm going to say one I I'm about 125 right now I want to be 120
28:37
so so can you imagine uh you consuming 50 lbs of your favorite food every day
28:43
how long would it take you to exhaust the supply of that food yeah no kidding or my wallet but well whichever
28:50
something would be exhausted after a while yeah well that's what's happening with the grass c car uh a lot of
28:55
Cheerios right there buddy oh man lot of Cheerios uh now they are not uh they are
29:03
prevalent but but fortunately for us uh there's very few sightings or sightings
29:10
sting established there is evidence of uh of them being in the Great Lakes there's DNA evidence of them or maybe
29:17
even a fish or two that has been um inadvertently caught but they haven't
29:23
taken a foothold yet and we still have time to be able to do our part and
29:30
making sure that doesn't happen and one of the best ways we can as Anglers not
29:35
that you're going to go fishing for them because if something that eats that much ve vegetation I don't think we'd be
29:40
interested in a spinner bait but regardless um what we can do is arm
29:46
ourselves with the knowledge uh certainly in terms of identifying them Asian carp. CA that's all you have to do
29:52
go to and like an says you may never see one again but what does it hurt to know what it looks like right and then you
29:57
will will be armed and ready just in case armed and ready great song by the way armed and ready Michael Shanker group uh but anyway uh you'll be armed
30:05
and ready and you can uh then if you see one of these things you can identify it and you can report it to uh the the
30:12
invasive species Center to the MNR m&f I should say etc etc because it is it's
30:17
important that we're all we all stay ahead of the game here this is something that we are trying to prevent so stay
30:23
ahead of the game just learn what they look like and then take care of business after H how would you take care of business what would happen if if we're
30:29
sitting I don't know we're bass fishing in an area that is shallow enough for us
30:35
to be able to see one of these Critters oh so at first I'd have to capture it
30:40
right I'd have to capture it so I would uh how the hell would you catch it I
30:46
know how I would do it but I don't want to say it on on a public on a public podast you know what I mean what I would
30:53
do since no I can't really you can't even do that you can't even say that
30:58
because that would be illegal like normally I carry my 410 shotgun in theat with me right but then might need a 22
31:04
and then no I don't everybody I don't care this is where and I hate they do it the East Coast sometimes though the East
31:12
coaster to take care of that business good this is where you'd want to be one of those bow hunter guys in the water
31:19
that are going after common car which I just can't keep a nice little compound like a kids's compound bow or something
31:24
like that tucked away in the rod Locker just for that reason it's not illegal to have that in a boat
31:30
I don't know I don't think so right I think so let me throw a disclaimer out right now the views and opinions of what
31:36
Mr Bowman just said is not necessarily the views and opinions of the Outdoor Journal Radio podcast or the network or
31:44
of any of its Affiliates and or Partners I apologize you guys are going to let him swim and I'm going to kill them come
31:50
on no I'm not suggesting that we do that but I was just there's no real easy way around that issue is there no there's I
31:56
think it's it's a matter of if you see one you would report it and if you capture one accidentally by snagging or
32:03
whatever you bring it in your boat and don't release it and report it I think that's the way to do it and take a GPS location uh pinpoint it you know
32:09
Waypoint it um where you see it and uh and tell the mnrf and the Asian c.ca
32:14
people and that was conservation Corner brought to you the F brought to you by the folks at invasive species Center
32:21
yeah there you go uh podcast Network highlight speaking of said podcast and
32:26
not being the opinion of um Diaries
32:31
of course he he's bigger Neanderthal than you are
32:36
for we're Team podcast uh Network I mentioned uh that we are a network uh
32:43
some highlights that we like to bring to your attention from time to time uh take place every week actually this week
32:50
we're uh we're urging you to go to Diaries of a lodge owner episode
32:56
64 that just went up uh because Steve's guest on that episode
33:02
is none other than Rex Burkhead of uh Super Bowl Fame H Stevie keep uh when we
33:10
were uh when he was talking about this he kept saying you gotta wait you got to check this out I haven't heard it yet but you got to check it out you got to
33:16
check it out you got so he's really excited about this one so it must be pretty good this guy played with with the Tom Brady on the Super Bowl when you
33:22
team yeah exactly look at is that is that Rex
33:28
player look at that football player see see if Tom Brady if Tom Brady showed up
33:34
here here if Tom Brady showed up at the local high school while the local high
33:41
school is practicing football yeah right and he just showed up just showed up and he spent a couple hours with them
33:47
showing them a thing or two would you say that was intelligent football pressure that Tom Brady brought to the
33:52
local high school no it's not pressure it's intelligent football intelligent football okay take the word pressure off
33:59
would you say that Tom Brady would deliver intelligent football not because the kids aren't intelligent it would be an absolute treat would be like a free
34:05
seminar exactly right exactly free uh boot camp if you will exactly so anyways
34:13
uh check out the episode it is uh called Super Bowl champion Rex Burke head what
34:19
a creative whoever writes the titles for these episodes right that's uh very
34:25
creative very I can make a title out but I won't do that I was going to say Steve
34:32
Nai uh some kind of yeah
34:38
head if he made that title up if Dean did it oh sorry Dean you didn't do that anything that I miss anything Dean about
34:45
that episode that you'd like to maybe comment further on no there's very little here yeah so will was the one
34:52
that brought uh rex on I guess they met at at Nordic Point like a few weeks
34:58
after we were there I think oh I think we just missed them oh we just missed Leo we just missed Rex wow we're missing
35:04
everybody are they avoiding us do you think do you think people are avoiding us Angelo I don't know but we have these
35:10
Close Encounters in the outdoors on a regular basis I don't know whether that's good or bad I mean you can look at it as bad by saying these people want
35:17
to avoid us so they'll following these guys and then we get the leftovers but
35:23
this time we got ahead of the game I guess speaking of the outdoors
35:28
D thank you uh sale is your home for all things deer hunting it is the season Oho
35:35
yeah it is season baby de open uh the first of deer hunting is it bow or
35:42
Ontario is October 1 October one so it's open it's open and that's bow hunting right now right and then the gun season
35:48
in like first week in November and then that closes and then bows back open till
35:54
Christmas and but and the gun season's two weeks long or is it depends where you are down here it's like 6 days oh
36:01
okay up north it's a couple weeks okay yeah uh regardless it's upon us for sure
36:06
uh anything you might need for uh trekking out into the Wilderness this
36:12
time of year CU it is a special time of year to be outdoors no doubt about it uh it's my favorite it is my favorite
36:18
fishing and hunting and anything just walking hiking now it's not you know the mornings are so fresh and all that stuff
36:23
you you got to dress properly sales got an absolute array of quality odor wear
36:29
at the store too so not just the hunting products but the the clothing too so if you don't have a sales store near you
36:35
well that's unfortunate for you uh we have one right almost like right there
36:41
uh so we just get up when we need uh fix uh we just walk on in there and holy
36:48
moly here we are so hide your Visa if you don't if you don't uh do not despair
36:55
just go to sale.ca that's s a.ca and uh search for whatever you're
37:03
looking for chances are real good you'll find it there and you'll find stuff that
37:08
maybe you didn't even know you needed until you see that some of it could be up to 60% off that's right oh at any
37:17
given time it's a very and it's a very neat little system they have on their website and that in that you go to the
37:22
clearance part of it then on the sidebar they have you want to have 40 to 50% off
37:28
you click that you unclick that you want 60% off click that and you sorts everything out yeah it's it's very very
37:35
intuitive very easy to to work and that's great news for all of us let me tell you uh that that is
37:41
available yeah and we were talking about news
37:47
oh is that a segue to me in the news Ontario looking for Hunter support
37:53
monitoring chronic wasting disease so obviously this is a big thing in in the deer world and the white tailed deer
37:58
world oh look at that Beast oh my God that's a rack I think he's sticking his tongue out look at the size of the neck
38:04
and the body on that thing like I'm not a real deer expert but that's got like tiny head compared to that body doesn't
38:09
he do you know is that kind like that's a big boy that's a big boy um so what the what the m&f is uh is doing here now
38:17
um I believe it's the m&f right onario here uh in zone one which is Peterboro
38:23
to Belleville in Wildlife Management's uh units 68 a 71 74 74b and Zone 2 Owens
38:30
sound to Orangeville to concard what they want to do is they want to get Hunters to to actually give the heads of
38:39
their deer to the M&R m&f to study for chronic wasting disease now you're going
38:45
to say I'm not giving the head of my deer away it's my trophy I don't want to get it mounted no you will get it back
38:50
they will tag it they will Market they will do everything they're just you're just helping this this whole system along to try and see if chronic wasting
38:56
disease is actually in Ontario cuz right I believe there's still not any reports of it is there Dean no we we've never
39:02
had a confirm never had one pretty amazing they're staying ahead of like our carp like your invasive grass carp
39:07
you know what I mean they're staying ahead of the game so um so yeah if I mean you just get a hold of the mnrf if
39:12
you're in those zones and they will they will freeze that deer head for you and all that and then if you want it back
39:18
for any reason then you can get it back if you don't they will I'm sure they'll dispose of it and uh and you're helping
39:23
along the whole you're helping along the way that's and you're helping yourself if you're well I don't I don't need to
39:28
do because believe me there's people out there who don't necessarily you're helping yourself that's right and and
39:35
the end result if you want to get your test results of your deer ontario.ca C CWD so um you'll even get
39:44
the results of the test so isn't that lovely I think it's a great idea I love the fact that they're doing stuff like
39:49
this and uh we have this on the website Dean something along this it'll be on it's all on fishing canada.com as you
39:57
listen to this podcast you can even go there right now and continue listening to us but read read some of the they
40:04
could do that information I found out something of interest and the reason I brought that up by the way that's
40:10
fishing canada.com in case you were wondering uh but I found out the reason I say that because I know I'm very
40:16
confident now that our audience is capable of that that is you know reading something and listening to something
40:22
I'll tell you why last night at supper uh my grandson uh um who was staying with us
40:28
for a little bit uh we were having a wonderful discussion because I said to him and I kind of said it uh it was a
40:35
tongue and cheek kind of thing I said so how's that whole new deal going uh
40:42
where uh you're no longer allowed to have uh telephones uh in class cuz I was kind of
40:49
you know proud finally cuz I've been saying for years get rid of that [ __ ] exactly
40:55
there's a bunch of [ __ ] oh it's all right it was why why do you make such a big deal of I big deal is because I
41:02
think it it should have been made a big deal from the beginning could have just heard you because because I think that
41:08
uh it's wrong that you guys had access to your phone they're not enforcing it are they are they no I knew it I knew
41:16
something like that was going to come and now now he said to me he says well he says I still use it what do you mean
41:22
you still use it it's supposed to be against the whole
41:27
School regulations isn't it he says yeah he says what happens is you you have to
41:33
hang it up apparently they they have somewhere in the class everybody has a little pocket on the wall with their
41:41
name on it and you you have to put your phone in there
41:46
right I would have thought that that would have taken care of business but you know these little buggers have already figured a way
41:52
through with his phone or with his watch with his watch oh oh my God because
41:58
apple is talking to Apple and therefore he can still do everything that he wants to do
42:04
including including listening to either music and or podcast and or uh you know
42:14
well I know I yeah come on I mean people can do that obviously so really
42:19
nothing's changed other than and we've probably gone to Great expense to make the little hanger things for everybody
42:26
and now they're selling watches and now there's so more watches app I love thank you so much for that La W see now I was
42:33
thought you know you could also also just take a a fake phone or your second phone drop that in I I just mine just
42:39
died I just take my fake phone put that in there and I got a but if they see you then obviously
42:46
they would have to do no but in this case it's brilant because you know you're doing your work and then you
42:51
can't take your watch off because you need to know what time it is ask know what time it is how do you know when the class is over I'm telling you big clock
42:58
on the wall they can't they don't even know how to read an analog clock those kids do they they don't even know oh God what was that hand saying what is a hand
43:05
frustrating it's very frustrating oh my God at least he confessed to you but he bet you he confessed in a proud way
43:11
didn't he he said oh yeah Grandpa I'll lay one back at your court here say no problem we got we got it we got it
43:17
covered what do you mean you got it covered oh oh yeah it says you it says you cannot be in you can't have your
43:24
your phone in your hand and and and and do stuff on your phone that's crazy I said yeah that's the whole yeah that's
43:30
why I've got one of those oh we are screwed we are so
43:38
screwed fan question of the week Mr Bowman uh brought to you by the good Folks at uh
43:44
fishfindermounts.com probably the single most important uh
43:51
URL that you as an angler needs to burn into your psyche well okay let's just
43:58
combine that with garmin.com as well because you need that to use Garmin
44:03
stuff but that's like saying you have feet in order to wear shoes it's obvious
44:08
you're going to the only thing you can put on your feet is shoes well I'm assuming bear
44:14
feet you saw it that dude there you had that picture up there that dude F people
44:19
who are not using people who are not using garment you might say they are walking around Barefoot so there you go
44:26
that have been a drum roll I just did that I know you did but I'm just pointing out to Dean this he's new on the show yeah I have my other buttons up
44:33
here cuz I have one prepared yeah he's just he just got unprepared Dean is
44:39
abandoned the very thing that we needed him for you know his good looks isn't
44:44
that what we need him for his good looks well yeah get all the chicks watching our show because they don't want to
44:49
watch us go what that would saying but anyways uh where what was the one thing
44:55
that Dean was that that he's there you go what is good work brother good work
45:02
anyways this fan question by Fishfinder mouse.com is from Colin Sanders via uh
45:08
from Ontario via email fish info fishing canada.com you can do it either through that or Facebook page or Instagram page
45:15
okay with Halloween around the corner so Halloween's coming up in a few weeks here a couple weeks do you have any
45:21
spooky fishing stories something Eerie that happened to you while out fishing
45:26
maybe a creepy fish maybe a creepy fishing story you've heard from a
45:32
friend I I was it behooved me I I a testament that we don't uh we don't
45:40
get these in advance so that we can prepare for them these questions that that we read now Dean on the other hand
45:46
he he's he gets this in advance because he's the guy who selects them but he doesn't let us see them until when we're
45:52
that piece of paper is there all morning well do you think I'm just sitting around like you waiting for things for
45:58
to do my day is scheduled minute to minute to minute to minute and if he gets in here 3 minutes before the
46:05
podcast you know what the other minutes are exactly can't even get I was even wearing a beautiful suit today a jacket
46:11
as you saw which means that when I was already up working representing this
46:17
morning you were still in bed doing whatever it is you do uh in the we hours in representing looking like a pimp you
46:24
pimping out there weren't you by the way if you watch Snoop Dog on I told you he was great remember I
46:30
told you he is outstanding I got to tell you I think bé is even better might be
46:36
the best ever he is so freaking good he is good that go I remember I told you I
46:41
don't know I don't I don't think I'm going to enjoy it this year with those two guys on I can't they make the show they are outstanding yeah without a
46:48
doubt Snoop is he's Snoop he starts rapping lyrics he starts talking these
46:55
lyrics to people that tell them how good they are like oh my God so anyways um spooky Halloween stories involving
47:01
fishing the only thing I can I don't remember anything I remember some spooky stuff uh um during the The Outdoor
47:09
Journal shoots um you know the the lions roaring in Krueger park at nighttime stuff like that so we were all part of
47:16
that we weren't fishing but we were in a camp and I think we've talked about this on the Outdoor Journal podcast but those
47:21
lions roaring there's there's nothing like that listen everything we did on Outdoor Journal had an element into
47:27
spookiness be hon the shrunken heads in the the Head Hunter place in B they
47:32
these shrunken little heads in that big net basy looking thing like that you put that in a dark situation in Halloween
47:38
that would be able as spooky as it get I told this story
47:44
before um Colin but maybe you didn't hear it so I will do this for your
47:50
benefit because you took the time to to uh write in and uh so I'm going to tell
47:55
you the story before Pete and I obviously have traveled extensively together over the last four decades and
48:03
um we we've gotten to know each other quite well and one of the things that Peter is famous for is he has no
48:13
pulse he has no blood he has no blood in his veins so to see him truly I I on the
48:21
other hand have enough pulse for him and everybody else because I get very emot
48:27
about things I get excited about things I have ups and downs and he's just yeah
48:33
okay whatever you know so anyways so an old camera uh buddy of ours T Todd
48:39
Monroe and I were always figuring what is it going to take to get this guy you
48:46
know the least bit excited so we were on a shoot in some
48:51
decrepit part of the world this was an outdoor Journal shoot and we were staying in the very
48:58
dark dreary you might call it scary motel and man it was bad like you know
49:05
if you had one light bulb working in this room you were lucky so I
49:12
remember Todd saying hey I got a great idea how we can get to Pete and the
49:18
conversation started uh taking shape see how what I got to put up with in the shoot and it was decided that what we
49:25
were good Pete and I were were rooming together um it was decided that the way
49:31
that I was going to get him was to come jumping out from behind this shower
49:38
curtain it was only two of the eight rings that was still attached to the curtain the rest were all pulled out and
49:44
and and it was mildew and stuff and all over the curtain it was like spider webs no light bulb in the anyways what I was
49:52
going to do Todd was going to distract them I was going to go to the room first and having uh lived with Pete for so
50:00
long I knew what his habits were as soon as he comes in the room first thing he does he goes and has a pee so we decided
50:08
that I was going to get to the room before him and I was going to get behind
50:13
that decrepit looking uh uh Curtain shower curtain and it was a little wee
50:18
bathroom the pisser was like almost in the shower and so like the curtain he's almost touching the curtain with his
50:25
shoulder while he's peeing right that's how small it was no lights it was just it was creepy I so the game plan was I
50:31
was going to go in and hide behind the curtain and then when he's halfway through like Midstream I was going to
50:37
jump out I was going to pull the rest of the curtain and just and he was going to piss
50:43
himself that was the game plan himself and so I went in and hid behind
50:50
the curtain and I'm waiting sure as hell I hear him coming to the RO they go boy here it goes and I'm getting all I was
50:55
scared just for just sheer joy and excitement of what we were finally going to witness him with an elevated uh uh
51:02
blood level of some kind so he comes in and I wait and I wait and I wait cuz I
51:07
wanted this to be midrand I didn't want him to be able to stop what he was doing and I wait and then finally I grabbed
51:13
the curtain i yanked it back and he looks up at me oh hi buddy
51:21
what are you doing in there didn't miss the drop meanwhile I Shi myself just the excitement of what
51:28
I so anyway so that was that was a spooky moment for you that was for me not for you clearly not for you he said
51:35
oh what are you doing in there buddy oh God there's our spook story
51:41
there it is pretty [Music]

52:37
folks on the program before we were uh as excited then as we are today after
52:43
what we just witnessed yesterday or the day before uh Ivon drebert and Zach
52:49
Melnick join us now um owner directors uh of this incredible uh product uh
52:56
under the label of Planet Productions How You Doing guys good awesome than for
53:02
having us my god did you ever uh uh you were part of our day yesterday I got to
53:08
tell you uh for for people saying what the hell is he talking about we we were
53:13
privy to a link that brought us to their latest Endeavor I'm talking an incredible piece of
53:20
cinematography great storytelling um whoever wrote it hats
53:25
off to to anyway just a masterpiece is world class it really is it's a masterpiece honestly it is it's a
53:33
masterpiece do we have to do anymore I think we're done now we're here yeah we got to be yeah oh
53:40
my God you did it good for you folk you know it's it's all about you know shining
53:47
that Spotlight on the Great Lakes you know we see a lot of fabulous ocean you know Pearl reef sharks we see that
53:54
everywhere but you know the Great Lakes areesh freshw Water Systems don't get that same kind of love so really we were
53:59
trying to to give them that you know BBC planet Earth treatment right you did
54:04
that for sure and you know what it's funny that what you're saying here is that we are all enthralled with the ocean and the Sharks but if you want to
54:10
take it to another level I I still think there'd be a lot of interest in the Great Lakes you know the biggest system
54:17
of joined freshwater lakes together and think I didn't realize until you just said it now you basically reiterated uh
54:24
what Ivon just said if you wanted to study the planet's Health in terms of
54:31
fresh water right which obviously fresh water plays an important role in our lives if you wanted to study how the
54:38
planet is doing in terms of fresh water is there a better PL I mean the Great
54:44
Lakes I think collectively would be the biggest uh source of freshwater in the
54:51
world and think of everything's dumping into it we've got we've got we've got waterways spilling into it we've got
54:58
lakes that are feeding feeding from it everything it's like it's like the heart
55:03
of the planet term fresh so diverse and especially when you'll watch it we're getting more of the videos here but
55:09
there Lake Superior to Lake Eerie there's such a diversity in these bodies of water that it's incredible and
55:15
throughout they all change throughout so um yeah what and of course the water Clarity doesn't hurt that they can uh
55:22
shoot awesome stuff there so sorry for taking up time here just because we're excited obviously as you can tell for
55:29
people who are tuning in for the first time to you on this show can you just quickly bring them up the speed as to
55:36
what you are what you're doing and and how they can get involved with you and watch your
55:41
stuff sure so we have spent the last three years using underwater drones to
55:48
film underwater in the Great Lakes to show people what's going on down there
55:54
in particular in Rel to this tremendous invasion of the invasive quag muscle which has really
56:01
changed how those systems work especially that offshore ecosystem that
56:08
humans rarely go so what is off Define offshore if you could please to people
56:14
Define what you're calling offshore so what we're calling uh the
56:22
offshore is basically the the the spot where you know the average humans don't
56:27
go most people interact just with that sort of narrow strip along the edge of
56:33
the Lakes where they might swim or cast a a line over or even if they go out
56:38
fishing in a small boat the lakes are so big and scary that you know a lot of people don't don't venture out into that
56:46
vast open Lake system which is you know the largest source as you say of um on
56:53
fresh water on on Earth and it gets deep you know most of the lakes are are are
56:59
much deeper than people would go normally and try to fish um if you're a
57:04
sports Fisher uh so that was that sort of offshore land that has really been
57:09
transformed because if you go out there today and it's it's uh it's just sort of
57:15
the Sea of invasive quag muscles and the there are science folks who were trying
57:21
to uh tell people this was happening for a long time but really only recently has
57:27
this technology been available where we can get down there with extremely low light sensitive cameras and really shine
57:34
a light on it in a way that hasn't been possible before and of course the show also includes you know all of your all
57:41
of your favorite Fish Friends those Nearshore fishes like you know we spend some time with musky and smallmouth bass
57:48
and of course it includes Lake some footage of lake trout spawning so we're also looking at you know those those
57:54
systems that you know are are doing well and the ones that are a little bit more in trouble so it's a it's a fun kind of
58:01
n romp through the natural world of the Great Lakes uh if you're into fishing if
58:06
you're into angling you have to see what we what we witnessed yesterday because the
58:13
interesting part aside from being great cinematography great great I mean the the Artistry was just incredible in that
58:19
whole piece aside from that but as Anglers we're looking at your imagery from a totally different View point
58:26
right we're saying H why is that musky facing that way look at look at what it's doing it's just that far off the
58:33
bot like we're looking at it from Ang so I'm I'm asking every anger that's watching this right now if you're
58:39
serious about your craft you have to check these folks out because there's some things there that I think we can
58:45
all learn from yeah and not just that an I think it's because we're we're so deep
58:50
in fishing our species the fish themselves there's an interest in that and when you see the these guys portray
58:57
it like the leg throat shots that they have in there with the colors and the fins when they're spawning together and
59:02
and touching each other it is it it blows your mind it's just you just kind of you love these animals already and
59:07
now wow there's a new view that you've never seen before so it's just so cool yeah I never saw those lake trout yes
59:14
yeah I say that that that lake trout stuff was was when we first decided we
59:20
first realized this was possible was in the fall of 2021 and we were we we talked with the
59:28
folks at the M&R and we were like okay we'd like to try to film some lake trout
59:33
you guys have been trying to rehabilitate this species for decades it's just starting to do well let's go
59:39
and try to get some really good footage of it with these underwater drones and when we put the underwater drone down
59:45
there and the lake trout were just swimming by us and the colors were amazing and the sun was coming in the
59:51
water it looked just like a a reef in the ocean like it was a scene from from
59:56
from a Disney movie or something but it was just like right outside in in the great lake so at that moment was when we
1:00:04
realized oh you know we can totally make this show and show people our you know
1:00:09
friendly freshwater fishes in the Great Lakes in a way that they haven't seen them before and hopefully give people a
1:00:15
greater appreciation for the life that's down there Absol with the robot really
1:00:20
just allows us to spend you know hours at a time underwater it can spend up to 12 hours swimming around down there so
1:00:28
often you know we'll find an individual fish and at first they might be a little you know sofish but over time they'll
1:00:35
realize we're not going to try to eat them and then they'll you know either you know start feeding or take us to
1:00:42
their friends and then we'll just get to see things that you know folks from the
1:00:47
scientific Community are like oh we didn't know this about fish Behavior so it's been really fun for us to see you
1:00:53
know those animals we already love and how they respond and how they act naturally in the in the world you just
1:01:00
answered one of Dean and my's conversation this morning we were talking about if the fish this big robot
1:01:06
coming at them are they afraid are they not we just answered that question they acclimate to it you got lots of time they get used to it they know it's not a
1:01:12
threat it's not a predator and then all of a sudden hey let's go or even if it is a predator we've seen through our the
1:01:18
technology that we use um we've seen that that that Predator pre relationship
1:01:24
is not hostile 247 God in fact in fact it's not hostile
1:01:30
even an hour out of the 247 but when it turns hostile it's
1:01:36
hostile and it's over and it's done and then everybody goes back to coexisting in that environment that's you guys are
1:01:43
capturing that in Spades with with your technology so uh yeah as I said before
1:01:49
if you're a serious angler uh and you don't watch this you're shame on you it's it's if I may say so without
1:01:56
sounding crude it's as close to fish porn as anybody is ever going to document well spawning Lake that was
1:02:04
fish there's a lot of you know it's is still I think rated PG but exactly yeah
1:02:12
uh tell us a little bit about the uh the history of your production company and yourselves in the field of
1:02:20
production yeah so we're actually a husband and wife team and we've been making document Aries together for about
1:02:27
20 years um still married after all that and yeah so we've done a lot of
1:02:34
like science and natural history stuff and you know the the way we first
1:02:39
started getting into trying to tell fish stories we worked on Great Bear Lake in uh uh the Northwest Territories and they
1:02:46
have these fabulous Lake Trad up there world record siiz breaking Lake Trad and we we were looking for a better way to
1:02:53
tell fish stories cuz you know we can't be be underwater for that long and at
1:02:59
the same time after we were finished that show we started uh looking out our back door we live on the Soggy Bruce
1:03:05
Peninsula on lake hiron and you know the the guy we used to buy fish from was no longer fishing anymore and that kind of
1:03:11
started us on this journey of what's going on out there in the lakes that you know we can't get white fish and down
1:03:19
the rabbit hole we went and this whole uh quag muscle Invasion story started
1:03:24
unfolding and then at the same time these new rovs that are designed specially for Cinema came on the market
1:03:32
and like the timing was just magical um because basically the two of us can launch one of these things you know and
1:03:38
go to the bottom of Lake here on on a Saturday if we feel like right I I think I mentioned last last time you were on I
1:03:46
think I mentioned uh back in 1991 I want to say maybe
1:03:52
'92 we actually got into that we we had this big big robotic
1:03:58
cumbersome um monster monster it weighed a ton uh it had 150 ft umbilical cord
1:04:07
but the problem with the cord it was stiff and it it was awkward it was like
1:04:12
like a hose like a garden hose it was like a garden hose so so you can imagine on a you know an at that time at 18 or
1:04:19
even 17 ft boat we had this this monstrosity and all of this coil
1:04:26
a garden hose and and deploying it was a nightmare and then as soon as it would
1:04:32
hit the water we had no idea where we were because we didn't have the the Telemetry that that you guys have got we
1:04:39
didn't know whe pointing that way or that way or that way or that way we didn't know how deep we were all we did
1:04:46
was for the very first time we had eyes underwater and that intrigued us tremendously and we spent the next I
1:04:53
don't know two decades trying and trying to improve on that and we never did so we were all Ultra excited when we saw
1:05:00
what you guys have done so now now we just stick a GoPro down on a poll yeah that's it that's enough that's all we do
1:05:06
do either of you or both of you dive are you uh divers as
1:05:12
well we are divers we you know going into the show we thought oh we're really
1:05:17
gonna have to you know we're not amazing divers we're not Tech divers nothing like that but you know going into the
1:05:22
show we thought oh we're really G to have to get better certifications and that of thing but you know we just ended
1:05:27
up using the robot every time because it's just so much easier it's safer um
1:05:33
and we can just do so much more with it it can go from the surface you know to 300 feet down and nobody dies
1:05:41
true my God that's that's incredible range so you've got a 300 foot depth
1:05:47
capability with this monster well actually we have A600 foot that's capability with these with this monster
1:05:54
so yeah we can go to the very deepest part of Lake Superior which is 440 M uh
1:06:01
deep you know um and before that would have taken a uh a big ship with a with a crew and
1:06:10
it would have cost tens of thousands of dollars per day right and so that's what's totally changed with this
1:06:17
technology where Ivon and I can go out on a Saturday and do deep sea
1:06:23
exploration it's Lake style for for a tiny fraction of the cost of what it
1:06:29
used to be just the two of you like you don't so often wow yeah so we've got um
1:06:36
to to launch this yeah we could show you as T um to launch this robot we we had a
1:06:43
we had a boat built by the folks from Henley uh up on Manan Island and it's a landing craft style so the front comes
1:06:49
down um so just the two of us um will operate it Zach's we've got a little cabin Zach will be driving it back in
1:06:56
the cabin and I'll be out front and then how we operate we've got a little trolling motor on there with spot lock
1:07:02
so that you know we go out we put the spot lock on we don't need we never deal with anchors it's because they're the
1:07:07
worst um throw on the spot lock put the robot down we can go down you know 300
1:07:12
feet without a problem um and uh yeah we just uh we just spend time under there
1:07:18
and that's how we end up seeing so many cool you know fish and habitats of the Great Lakes just putting that time in
1:07:24
and often you know we'll have a plan about what we're hoping to get or you know we know this species is spawning
1:07:30
that kind of thing but it's pretty amazing when our first surgeon you know just came up to us and checked our robot
1:07:35
out which was this very cool feeling in that in that documentary too there was there are some shots I don't know if you
1:07:42
went deeper I remember you saying 300 plus feet and some of that stuff I think those sculpin maybe or whatever it was
1:07:47
there was something that was in 2 to 300 feet and and people that are trying to wonder is does it even show up it shows
1:07:52
up as clear as day they may have to throw the lights on it but it's just unbelievable still even at that depth so you can see everything well the amazing
1:08:01
thing about the Great Lakes now is that because the muscles have have cleared that water that deep water ecosystem is
1:08:09
much clearer than even most ocean ecosystems um and so we're able to to go
1:08:16
down to you know three four 500 ft and
1:08:22
in fact we're able to get an image that's very good in 250 300 ft 320 ft
1:08:32
almost 400 fet of water without lights at all wow and so a number of those
1:08:38
shots are from that 300 foot range where you see those those endless expanses of
1:08:43
muscles or a ship and and that would have been totally impossible uh before
1:08:49
the muscles uh really to see that and and the very low light sensitivity of the camera system as well so this camera
1:08:56
system is designed if you're filming on the surface to be like a Moonlight camera so if you're down that deep right
1:09:03
now it's still very dim it's sort of like Moonlight environment but we can use this technology to sort of uh make
1:09:10
that look much brighter and so you get that full view of what's going on down there it's VA cameraman
1:09:17
from vaa y coming in here yep you won't be able to see me but just listen to The
1:09:22
Voice just awesome job on on the documentary I just watched it in a
1:09:28
single sitting yeah it was on a company time but that's a different I I paid for that your job it's his job right but it
1:09:36
was well worth it I have so many production questions but like just the
1:09:41
quality of the footage that you're getting is superb and I just couldn't
1:09:47
stop thinking what happens if you get tangled somewhere with that because that drone I assume it's uh Tethered to the
1:09:54
main remote right yeah yeah and so so it's always tethered we can't send a signal yet uh through
1:10:01
the water the same way we can through the air with Arial drones we always have a tether we've got what's special about
1:10:06
this robot it's a fiber optic tether so it's a two 2.7 millimeters thick so it's
1:10:12
not the garden hose that you guys had before we would have been we would we
1:10:17
could have done so much with that that's not fair there's still time for you
1:10:22
there's still time come with us come with us um but it's this this um 2.7
1:10:27
millimeter thick fiber optic tether um and so it's covered in Kevlar so it's still really strong um but we can send a
1:10:34
lot of information you know we're we're working in 4k in real time when the robots you know 300 feet down and we can
1:10:41
still change all the camera settings um when it's 300 feet down that we would if we had the camera in our hand but yeah
1:10:47
the tether tether management uh is a thing and so when we're operating Zach
1:10:53
is piloting the craft and my job is to manage that tether pulling it in pulling it out moving our boat around so that
1:10:59
we're avoiding obstacles and whenever we're operating we're always thinking about you know where is the robot where
1:11:06
is the tether going to be are we going to run into anything um one of the jobs we we just did was working with some
1:11:12
folks in the US to film shipwrecks for a shipwreck sanctuary and that's a case
1:11:18
where you know you need to be super careful about where you are what the tether is doing you don't want to get
1:11:23
caught up in the rigging but the cool thing about you know being able to see in real time when you're down there is
1:11:28
that if we do get snagged on something we can turn around and look at it and figure out okay I need to go this way to
1:11:35
get we need that for our lures no kidding that's good no kidding and actually we we have another robot like a
1:11:42
little one with a claw we can bring in come on really pull the tether off off the just in
1:11:50
case Fair that's not fair at all have you ever come the little one and
1:11:56
piggybacking on bva's question have you ever come close to your tether getting caught in the the spot lock trolling
1:12:02
motor prop because we get fishing lines sometimes get caught in and stuff like that you ever had that yeah so when I'm
1:12:08
on Deck I'm wearing the little um you know me remote and I'm that's one of my
1:12:14
jobs I'm always looking like are we near the the motor sometimes I'll turn it off sometimes I'll flip it up and underneath
1:12:20
like that is always okay always watching the old garden hose we called it that we
1:12:26
used to have was so bad that we couldn't even use the electric motor you didn't dare put the electric motor down when
1:12:32
you deployed this thing because you never knew it was of course it was very buoyant the hose as you can imagine it
1:12:37
was very buoyant so we're calling it a hose now well you know it's it's over
1:12:42
here coil up you think you're over there and next thing you know you're caught up in in the in all kinds of stuff so
1:12:49
anyways enough having that motor though too lets us follow the school of fish so of when we're down and and fish are on
1:12:57
the Move we're able to go with them you know we only have so much tether we have 300 meters of tether which is quite a
1:13:03
bit but you know fish are on the Move we're going to go with them so that's the trolling motors are really important
1:13:09
part of what we're able to do curious do you use uh forward facing sonar at all
1:13:15
in your in your filming like you want to see where the camera is in relation to
1:13:20
the fish for example from above so that you can get sort of a bird's eyye view of of where you need to be is that yeah
1:13:28
that's something we've thought um about doing but right now we just use um you
1:13:33
know your your regular sonar and Sid scan when we're looking for um structure
1:13:41
and things like that but we definitely want to add to it we can hook you up
1:13:46
okay because I think I think that would be vital it would save you a lot of time for sure in in where and how to deploy
1:13:53
it because you can literally go out Lake Ontario in 300 ft or more and and turn
1:13:59
this technology on and and you could you know exactly where you need to be and you can watch yourself going to where
1:14:07
you need to be and you can position yourself where you think the best shot would be I mean it's just all kind of
1:14:13
things that's where we that's why we have to collab we have to be in the boat with you we'll run the you run the
1:14:18
cameras we got it dialed in somebody else got to fish cuz we'll be so busy what the so so you you have this incredible
1:14:27
story you mentioned it and uh it would be unfair for us not to spend a bit of time on this um the quagga muscle
1:14:35
invasion you guys are the first as far as I know to document it to the point where Layman like us can look at it and
1:14:42
say wow I had no idea that this was this big of a problem
1:14:48
explain to you what you discovered um this is not the zebra muscle by the way folks that we've talked about you know
1:14:54
at naum this is a another type of muscle that is far more devastating to the
1:15:01
ecosystem than the zebra muscle ever was so um take over yeah so it it's actually
1:15:07
a cousin of the zebra muscle so the quag muscle um they're both from the same part of the world Black Sea area um and
1:15:15
the qua is actually a little bit bigger than the zebra and more hearty but the
1:15:20
crazy difference about the qua versus the zebra quaggas don't need to stick to things so that means that they can
1:15:27
oculate the whole you know soft sediment of the great legs so now when you go if
1:15:33
we got in a boat right now anywhere on the great lakes and went out you know to to 100 feet and we dropped a robot down
1:15:41
I can pretty much guarantee you we'd see a carpet of these muscles yeah that was
1:15:46
that was the freaky part when we watch when we watched the documentary is that you see all the zebras are only clung
1:15:52
onto rocks hard surfaces pipe or whatever like that the cagas they just go on there's sand there's weeds it
1:15:59
doesn't matter what it is they just drop down there and they make that like you said a carpet uh you know of uh well you
1:16:05
some of your shots you can't see anything but guas pretty much you know a little bit of sand here and there you know if they're they can be up to 40,000
1:16:15
per square meter and each one filters between one and seven lers of water per
1:16:21
day which means that all of the water in Lakes Michigan and hiron which together
1:16:27
form the largest freshwater lake on planet Earth can be filtered by a muscle
1:16:34
uh between either one or two weeks depending on what's what's going on down there and so that's sort of mindboggling
1:16:40
and you're probably wondering why is that a problem well it's a problem because what they're doing is they're
1:16:46
taking the algae that used to be up in the water column to feed things like zop
1:16:53
Plankton which feed the bigger slightly bigger fish that that feed the much bigger fish that we like and it's pulled
1:17:00
all that energy down into the lake bottom so it's not available for fish uh
1:17:06
to eat anymore so the the net effect is just less fish more muscles there's more
1:17:14
biomass in muscles far more than there are in fish leg Zach you said it pulled
1:17:21
it down explain what you're talking about what do you mean it pulled it down through the water right so they have
1:17:26
little siphons and they and they just eat the algae and putting it they literally are
1:17:33
sucking down the surface let's say that that 20 foot 25t band of of of of
1:17:41
micro you know organisms they're literally sucking it down well the the
1:17:47
the water would would flow sort of naturally around right they they're they are able to suck and they do change how
1:17:54
water moves and crazy stuff like that but most of it is when the water naturally moves by and as it goes by
1:18:00
they'll take out the algae um but you know how and and we're not scientists
1:18:05
right so we're just sort of telling you what we've learned from other science folks but how Lakes work is there's only
1:18:10
so much energy in a lake to make fish right and so where that energy is
1:18:17
matters where those nutrients are matter and so if they're all stuck in the lake Bottom they're not in the fish that
1:18:25
um were there you know fueling the ecosystem or out there for us to catch
1:18:31
and this is over and above the zebra muscle that's the part that was blowing my mind because for years I mean before
1:18:36
we even heard of quagga it was all about muscles that were called zebra mus that's all we heard of and and that's
1:18:42
what they were doing is filtering out all of the nutrition out of the water that normally would be the the food
1:18:48
source for everything that lives in in the lakes and so the Zebra muscles were
1:18:54
fil filtering at all and the water was getting clear and there was plant growth in areas that didn't have plant growth
1:19:00
because of sun but it was all Zebra muscles what you guys are telling us from your Discovery is that zebra muscle
1:19:09
is not even an issue anymore it's quag so you you take them and zebra put them
1:19:16
together and holy ma do we stand a chance here's another thing that they were talking about when they say they
1:19:22
filter in all the water well I learned this through their video is that everything has to poop right so they
1:19:28
poop out all the stuff is left over and it creates another algae on the bottom so covers the bottom with all this nasty
1:19:35
LGA as well so it's all a a cycle of bad really is what it is right like it's
1:19:40
insane it's not great no but if if you watch the show we work with a bunch of folks who are trying to figure out you
1:19:47
know can we do something about this and the other maybe I'll just give you the little upside there are some fish that
1:19:54
you know now that the Lakes have changed so much there are some fish that are getting some benefits from this New
1:20:00
World created by the muscles for instance leg trout is one of the fish we look at in the third episode if folks
1:20:06
watch the show um but you know leg trout used to be consuming lots of Alewife
1:20:11
right Al wife has have this little enzyme that's not great for leg trout and it's bad for them making babies so
1:20:17
now that there's less Alewife and they're eating more of native fish L TR are doing better they're starting to
1:20:22
bounce back now as a result of these changes so you know in any invasive species Invasion you're going to have
1:20:29
winners and losers and some of those winners are L trro you know things like white fish are most important commercial
1:20:35
species in the Great Lakes they're not doing great right salmon as well salmon like they they need L wife you know the
1:20:41
L wife was a huge part of their shinook Sal of the diet in great l so that's you know yeah you're right some go up some
1:20:47
go down like it's bizarre to know that the lake trout is going better because Al wife is a problem with them but yet the other yes it's pretty crazy and
1:20:54
goldes there's another one and they do a lot of study a lot of footage on goes in there there's some great footage of a
1:21:00
small MO two different small Mo scenarios but the one where she where he is guarding the nest with all those goes
1:21:06
around there and that that fish is so busy and that's you know you're seeing 10 seconds yeah you're seeing 10 seconds
1:21:14
15 seconds that's going on for the entire time those eggs and and babies are around so that's yeah the the the
1:21:21
goes are a complicated and fascinating part of this story
1:21:26
so while they do threaten our um eggs of our native species or an egg Predator
1:21:34
without the goes and and the goes you have to understand are the same as the
1:21:40
musles so they evolved in the same place in Eastern Europe right um to eat these
1:21:48
muscles they came in with them like the muscles came and the goes came they coexist together you would not have goes
1:21:56
if it weren't for the muscles because they they eat those little muscles they're by far the biggest Eater of
1:22:02
muscles and what they're doing is they are making some of they're taking some of that energy which I said was was was
1:22:09
locked in the lake bottom in these muscles and they're making it available in fish form so that things like
1:22:14
smallmouth bass and lake trout um have something to eat out there
1:22:20
because if the goes weren't there the the amount of other little fish that are
1:22:26
out that are out there that normally would have fed those species are such decreased that there would have been
1:22:33
nothing for them to eat so it's so complicated but if you got rid of goes right now it would be very bad disaster
1:22:39
for sure based on what in this documentary by the way they also have footage of goes eating Zebra muscles
1:22:45
that's how good this stuff is there like there's you have so many different cool shots in there it's crazy another uh
1:22:51
interesting fish that has come up in this that we probably very seldom you
1:22:57
know see or really are not that interested in and that is the white fish
1:23:02
yes talk to us about that so so we this project really
1:23:09
um got going because of the the decline or one might even say collapse of the
1:23:16
lake Whitefish which is the most important commercial fish species in the upper Great Lakes um this was a very
1:23:23
very common fish species very important to that that ecosystem um and I me if
1:23:29
you were buying fish and chips you know 20 years ago certainly be white fish and it's having big impact on the on the you
1:23:36
know handful of commercial Fishers left in the Great Lakes and definitely on the
1:23:41
indigenous communities as well this is a very important fish for the indigenous
1:23:47
Fishers the communities out there and they're having a big impact uh where we live on the sine Bruce Peninsula so we
1:23:53
wanted to to to show people and get people to care about this fish that most people might not think about or even
1:24:00
really know exists and so we were able to film the first know get the first
1:24:06
known shots of white fish spawning um ever I guess and so the show
1:24:11
opens where we see white fish coming in to their spawning Shores and beginning
1:24:17
the spawning dance and then actually spawning and so science folks were really excited when they saw that um and
1:24:24
so scientific work is going on with that footage to understand how those fishes
1:24:30
are using that habitat but we follow the life cycle of the lake Whitefish from
1:24:35
the spawning to hatching H as as eggs to trying to find food out there because
1:24:42
the the huge change the muscles have caused if they so they've made the food
1:24:47
that these baby white fish used to eat far less abundant so the little baby
1:24:52
white fish used to come out of their and then just had a smish board available of Z Plankton swimming around in the water
1:24:59
but now there's almost nothing out there for them to eat and so they're they're collapsing and it's having a major
1:25:06
impacts wow the scientific Community must just love you guys because you're doing all their work for them think
1:25:11
about it you know they would spend years uh you know deploying we do the fun stuff we do the fun stuff they still
1:25:17
have to analy and write papers we get to be out there on the water and it's interesting that the scientific
1:25:23
community in your documentaries in all three of them you show so many different areas from Ontario to Wisconsin to
1:25:30
Michigan everybody all these biologists are all working at you know kind of the same plan they're all doing different
1:25:36
stuff but they're all working at the same plan so it's uh it's crazy how much work is going on behind the scenes that we that nobody knows about it's insane
1:25:43
how much and the indigenous communities too so it's yeah Ivon there's a lot of
1:25:48
folks out there who are really keen on trying to figure out a solution to make sure that the fish that belong in the
1:25:53
Great legs are still here in the future and that we can keep fishing them in the future for Generations they're
1:25:59
passionate about it too they're very like there's there's a couple of compelling shots in there you can even see what by the biologist they almost
1:26:04
think they're crying because of what's happened here you it's you guys captured a lot of good stuff there so you didn't
1:26:10
start out you know looking for solutions to the white fish collapse or you know
1:26:16
what how how are the lake trout going to react to to the zebra muscle you didn't start that way obviously this thing was
1:26:24
more of as you said you know it was a a means to exploit your artistic inner
1:26:31
selves uh but now it's turned into something different are you contemplating it maybe swinging a little
1:26:38
bit more towards the scientific part because now you're finding that that there's a great need for that and people
1:26:44
must be reaching out to you saying Hey Hey listen uh I need to find out of how the common carp is doing in in Lake Erie
1:26:52
are you are you thinking of maybe going more in that direction yeah a lot of the work we're
1:26:59
doing now since since we started you know reaching out to these folks for all too clear is you know yeah lining up you
1:27:06
know let's go check out what the bloater are doing in the middle of Lake Michigan you know and it's because a lot of fish
1:27:12
science you know they use Nets and to catch fish but they're not seeing fish alive doing you know living their lives
1:27:19
so now we have this cool Tech where we're able to see Fish living their lives uh you know feeding spawning
1:27:25
cruising how they hang out in you know multispecies schools which is something we didn't even realize before we got to
1:27:32
be down there and I would say that looking into the future um you know at
1:27:37
least half our work now is working with Scientists to try to answer different questions using this technology in the
1:27:46
gry lakes and Beyond although I will say that some of the most enthusiastic folks
1:27:51
about the work we're doing you know when we post a fish video on uh social media
1:27:56
we get a lot of Anglers who are pretty cheffed getting to see their small mouth
1:28:02
getting to see the walleye doing their thing underwater so changes it changes everything for Anglers I mean completely
1:28:09
changes everything which is fantastic I mean some people might be disappointed at at what reality is compared to
1:28:16
Fantasy but uh nonetheless it's uh it's always interesting listen uh tell folks
1:28:21
how they can we're talking about this this candy that we have and we're not sharing it with the audience how can
1:28:27
they see this and where can they get it and how how's this work yeah so our Canadian broadcast
1:28:33

1:29:10
folks know that we got a sneak preview so hopefully that does got you
1:29:16
know and and just all too clear uh to
1:29:22
too that's how def find all too clear y all too clear it's all too clear uh well
1:29:28
it's all too clear to us that uh or it should be to the audience that we are
1:29:33
green with eny uh you're in a field that we've always been enamored to in fact
1:29:38
now I have a new thing when I die I want to be you guys okay I want to come back as you guys cuz you you guys are living
1:29:45
the life absolutely outstanding we ship captain someone to join us to drive the
1:29:51
boat I'm a great ship captain hey wow and he runs the electronics he's a
1:29:57
pirate he's kind of a pirate scarby dog you don't your job he knocks you off the planking into the lake so you got to
1:30:03
watch them sometimes but by the way these guys to the audience these guys are the best in the business I mean they
1:30:09
are truly they truly are as good as whatever I've National Geo stuff all that stuff I've seen they are as good or
1:30:15
better than anybody out there so better you go better uh guys thank thank you very much um all the best to you fre
1:30:24
congratulations you're going to be a huge hit come October 27th uh I I I'm feeling all kinds of
1:30:31
great things for you and uh uh I I'm just delighted that we uh met and
1:30:37
connected uh a while ago and we will keep that channel open we may we may I
1:30:44
just want to tease the audience a little bit we may be featuring some of your stuff on the
1:30:50
2025 fishing Canada series that starts January 5th on global television NK it's
1:30:57
all too clear I can see it right now it's all too clear nice thank you so much for having
1:31:02
us again we love it we absolute pleasure Zach Ivon thank you take care wow great
1:31:09
people and they do a great job I mean I was serious there that is world class for people that have not seen it yet
1:31:15
that have seen their past work yet it is such uh so professionally done the
1:31:21
documentary The Way their style they're you just stay there for that whole it's like an hour each one's an hour and you
1:31:27
just stick right to it and wow I remember in the mid 80s we had some incredible
1:31:35
film um that was given to us by DFO that they had documented I don't even know
1:31:42
how they got it but it was like cinematography at the time at its best and it was film and I remember that we
1:31:48
were doing a great uh lakes lake trout episode and we got to use some of this
1:31:54
footage I don't even know whether you recall or not but they had these these these at the time this this Earth
1:32:01
shattering uh visuals of a lake trout uh in spawn mode and it it came near the
1:32:10
camera and the colors on it were just breathtaking and the whole scene it lasted of all of six or seven seconds
1:32:18
right but I remember I was so drawn to that and I said man oh man we've got to get more and never since then have I
1:32:26
seen what I was fortunate enough to witness uh yesterday yeah yeah yeah now
1:32:32
you're see it in 4k now I see it in in like it is when when we say
1:32:38
breathtaking we are understating what you're going to experience on October
1:32:43
like looking through a your scuba mask you're right there looking through you're just saying oh my God this is
1:32:48
yeah freaky I'm so one thing I learned I don't know if you picked this up on there to the
1:32:54
audience a couple things I mean there's a lot of things out there um one thing I learned in that thing is that uh fish
1:33:01
like white fish can actually get a sunburn with the light penetration going down so far I had no idea a sunburn on
1:33:09
white like it's dangerous this penetration that the worst is getting and another one is that they said on Lake Ontario which we fish a lot you can
1:33:16
get up to 20 M of visibility from above drop down 20 M we're thinking 10 12 ft
1:33:24
20t on on the St Francis and stuff like that 20 M 60 ft plus down there
1:33:31
visibility insane think about that yeah that that as an angler you have to take
1:33:37
that kind of information and extrapolate what's good for you and add it to your
1:33:43
you know work box of tools and information when you're out fishing maybe that 8 lb test Flor carbon yor is
1:33:50
a little too heavy nowadays and maybe you got to go down to six yeah so think about that anyways uh as
1:33:58
you could tell we are we are just so thrilled at this product and and we are so honored that they gave us the
1:34:05
opportunity to share it with you and you have to watch it when becomes available
1:34:11
uh it will it will blow your mind and let us know let us know after that what
1:34:17
what you thought of it that are it Mr Bowman I need to calm down now after all that yes you are very excited I know you
1:34:24
get to but you get to Pilot a ship and I get to run the electronics and stuff like that we oh my God we'd have a blast
1:34:29
doing that it' be the first time you and I are in the water and we didn't want to cast a lineup because we just so oh yeah
1:34:35
that's cool that guy and we have monitors we'd have the monitors all in front of us showing showing the live
1:34:42
camera showing the the Garmin View and oh my God I can see it now P our new
1:34:48
future we may we may be able to get another 40 or 50 years out of that oh
1:34:55
on that note I'll have to sign off by the way it was a wonderful having vula jump in with a
1:35:01
question more that that shot that they did when they threw the net out did you notice that one when they threw the net
1:35:06
out and it follow the net how did they do that was that a GoPro or what was that probably a GoPro that was the
1:35:12
coolest shot like everything they did in this thing was nuts so incredible they are to underwater documentary style uh
1:35:20
creativity and talent and art uh that the fishing Canada show is to
1:35:27
angling hell hell yeah I thought you'd like that why not that's it for us folks
1:35:35
don't forget fishing canada.com the Gateway the portal to your next fishing Adventure everything you could possibly
1:35:41
want including some great underwater footage maybe very soon oh wouldn't that be nice all available there on behalf of
1:35:48
the entire cast of vaa who you heard I think maybe for the first time on this show no no was on in our uh we did he
1:35:57
did the East Co from from the from the field on the road Ste show wasn't it
1:36:02
Steve no it was up in obaba was it was it Steve show yeah Steve yeah he did a podcast with Steve he would he he
1:36:08
