Float Plane Walleye! | The Fish'n Canada Show
5K views
Mar 20, 2025
In this episode, Steve Niedzwiecki and Dean Taylor do “triple duty”. They start by having to pre-fish Perrault Lake in order to “guide” four generous auction bidders who won this fabulous trip. Their second leg is not only putting their guests on to fish, but cooking up a legendary Canadian shorelunch. Lastly, when the pressure is off, Steve and Dean are treated to an outback fly-in adventure.

1:20
hi everybody welcome back to another
1:22
episode of the fishing Canada show as
1:25
you saw in a previous episode Ang and I
1:26
spend our first trip of the Season
1:28
taking full advantage of one of Nordic
1:29
point Point lodges Specialties a
1:31
fantastic walleye and small mouth
1:33
population on pero Lake and the
1:35
surrounding area what you didn't see
1:37
however was our second boat fnc 3 if you
1:40
will that's right folks like many
1:43
high-end Northern Ontario lodges 3 days
1:46
just isn't enough to get the full
1:48
experience that's why on this shoot we
1:50
employ the help of some familiar faces
1:52
to help us showcase all that Nordic
1:54
Point Lodge has to
1:57
offer joining us on this shoot is Steve
2:00
NSI and Dean Taylor Steve is a longtime
2:03
friend of the show former Lodge owner
2:05
and frequent co-host of the fishing
2:06
Canada show Dean has spent the last two
2:08
years behind the scenes but is now
2:10
migrating in front of the camera as our
2:12
newest
2:13
co-host together Steve and Dean are
2:16
being given two very important tasks
2:18
while Pete and I are out chasing Walley
2:20
the boys are playing host to our friends
2:22
at TD winners of the Eric Lind Ross
2:25
Easter Seals charity auction and giving
2:27
them the full Northern Ontario
2:29
experience Shor lunch and all after that
2:32
we're sending him on a plane ride to
2:34
chase down trophy walleye on one of
2:36
Nordic Point's many fly out Lakes but
2:38
before all that it's time to go
2:46
scouting welcome folks to the fishing
2:48
Canada show I am so excited to be out
2:51
here with Dean and Will palowski from
2:54
Nordic Point Lodge on beautiful perau
2:57
lake so this is our first stop well yes
3:00
um what are we targeting here and how
3:03
are we doing it so we are after Poston
3:05
Walley this morning Steve yeah areas
3:08
that we're going to fish today are more
3:10
current driven um they're deep waterer
3:14
Retreats uh kind of our secondary drop
3:16
off points which is what we would call
3:17
them and it's the 1 of June so that's
3:20
that's that sounds it's right in their
3:21
wheelhouse might see some fish suspended
3:24
they might be on bottom it's going to
3:25
kind of be a little all over the place
3:28
it's kind of hard to drop a line
3:29
everywhere so we're just using the live
3:31
scope and kind of scoping all this out
3:33
and if we're not seeing them we're not
3:35
going to stop for very long s on the
3:37
fish on the fly as we're looking e yeah
3:40
yeah so we are seeing a few on bottom he
3:42
will is has that been the pattern lately
3:44
yeah I mean they're you're going to get
3:45
a few on bottom and you get the odd one
3:47
suspended right now with that with that
3:49
uh post fun pattern right now so they're
3:52
when they're when they're kind of
3:53
hanging in the center there they're not
3:55
they're they're typically not feeding
3:56
they're going to come down to feed or
3:57
they're going to come up so but those
3:59
are nor the bigger ones though eh
4:00
correct absolutely correct yeah so
4:03
that's what we're looking for here if we
4:04
can stop on the suspended ones the wind
4:06
makes it hard especially in a big
4:08
pontoon Bool but this thing actually
4:09
handles pretty nice
4:19
absolutely nice that's a great that's a
4:22
beautiful
4:23
walleye
4:27
tomor what a beautiful fish
4:30
let her go yeah let's get her back
4:32
that's what we need for tomorrow boys
4:33
right
4:35
there Willie what's going on here
4:37
brother oh I just pitched up by that
4:39
stump Steve
4:41
and into a decent wall out here I think
4:47
beautiful it's looking good oh oh is it
4:51
ever a Dandy this one might not be too
4:54
bad oh this one will be pretty good
5:01
oh
5:05
hey boy those are the paring fish you're
5:09
talking about that's the on we were
5:11
looking for right there that's the fish
5:13
you're talking about looks like them God
5:16
EAS seals boys are going to have a good
5:18
trip
5:21
out that's a nice one thank you look at
5:25
the like look at my forearm it's my
5:28
whole arm there you go buddy go
5:31
home that is a perfect eating fish right
5:35
there perfect eating fish that's a nice
5:39
wall eh absolutely there we
5:43
go you even I'll let you take that one
5:46
out sir oh wow you know I appreciate
5:49
that just a little
5:52
finesse the whole way
5:57
another beautiful
6:00
walleye right there perau Lake now that
6:04
is a beautiful eating fish Will's got
6:06
the
6:07
conservation uh rules that uh we love to
6:10
follow and that one is right there and
6:14
down you
6:15
go he saw the water coming he started
6:19
kicking right out of my hand thanks
6:21
buddy
6:34
with a GPS full of way points Dean re
6:36
rigged the fishfindermounts.com portable
6:38
Liv scope bundle to the luxury
6:40
Princecraft fontoon reconverting this
6:43
party barge into a proper fish catching
6:45
machine the key to doing this is the
6:48
main reason we teamed up with the guys
6:49
at fishfindermounts.com as virtually no
6:52
other portable kit on the market is as
6:54
adaptable and as wellmade as the units
6:56
they offer in this scenario is able to
7:00
run his life scope on a 9t pole and the
7:02
battery should last for two full
7:05
days after the boat was fully rigged our
7:08
guests met the boys down at the dock and
7:09
boarded the Pontoon for a smooth ride
7:11
Gliding Over twoot waves to the first
7:13
spot of the day it didn't take long to
7:16
see that pre- fishing was going to pay
7:18
off oh it's a
7:21
beauty pay off other than one little
7:24
problem and one that most Anglers would
7:26
love to have the fish they're catching
7:29
are two too big we've got a beautiful
7:32
21in walleye and at Nordic Point Lodge
7:37
will has a conservation policy where
7:41
everything 18 in goes back in the water
7:44
which every Lodge owner that's
7:47
responsible and wants to look after
7:49
their their fishery should do that so
7:53
even
7:54
though it would be wonderful in the pan
7:58
we're going to go out and get some more
8:00
and we're going to get them under 18 and
8:01
we're going to eat like kaks throwing
8:04
back a good portion of their lunch is
8:05
giving Steven Dean flashbacks as two
8:08
guys with experience guiding not
8:10
delivering a Shor lunch is a nightmare
8:12
scenario one that both guys can proudly
8:14
say has never materialized today however
8:16
they are dangerously close to making it
8:19
a
8:20
reality by 11:30 a.m. the guys have
8:23
exhausted the majority of their way
8:25
points and they're hearing stomach
8:27
starting to rumble fainting confidence
8:29
feeling desperation Steve and Dean
8:31
decide to head to the Shor lunch spot
8:33
and pray that the point at the end of
8:35
the island is holding the rest of their
8:36
lunch hopefully their prayers will be
8:39
answered so they have been coming out of
8:41
the deeper St and these fish are right
8:43
on the border of what we can eat today
8:45
we're the lodge has a self enforced 18in
8:48
policy to try to make sure we're mostly
8:51
eating the males um and these fish are
8:54
right on that border line here there's
8:57
also another one right here a little bit
9:00
suspended oh
9:03
yes thank you thank
9:06
you
9:10
yeah
9:12
yeah
9:15
man we're eating good now boys look at
9:20
yes that the perfect eater SC that is uh
9:24
this is going to be a feast oh I can't
9:26
wait to eat it is going to be a feast
9:31
absolutely oh we'll get that if you put
9:34
your fingers right down inside here not
9:37
on the gills but inside his mouth just
9:40
like that and you roll and jack it open
9:44
he can't but bad things
9:48
live right there and right there and
9:51
they're all forward facing right and
9:53
these guys here a beautiful eating
9:57
northern pike here yeah oh you're going
9:58
to hold
10:00
you're going to hold it we're taking
10:01
pictures nice job brother right
10:06
yeah Steve is especially thankful for
10:09
Scotty's Northern as none of the guests
10:11
of the boat had ever thought about let
10:13
alone eating a Northern Pipe with the
10:16
Right cleaning Technique we swear these
10:18
fish can give Walley a run for their
10:20
money any day it's safe to say their
10:23
guests agree
10:29
I
10:30
[Music]
11:01
as mentioned off the top one of the
11:02
unique things about this shoot was just
11:04
how many options there are to achieve
11:05
your green fishing experience on the
11:08
third and final day Steven Dean get to
11:10
sample one of the fan favorites at Nork
11:12
Point Lodge a fly out to a remote Walley
11:15
Lake Dean and I are heading out to a a
11:18
Flyin day trip here at Nordic Point
11:22
Lodge and one thing I want to point out
11:24
it's extremely important to pack light
11:28
on these trips
11:29
and when you're going into these back
11:31
Lakes the key is to talk to your
11:34
Outfitter in this case will find out
11:38
what you need for tackle and then key on
11:41
it two spinning rods two casting rods
11:43
that's all we really need when you bring
11:45
more than that you're just stepping on
11:46
everything and we might not even come
11:48
back with them we've got our live scope
11:50
and a backup just in case uh we've got
11:53
our life jackets obviously our net and I
11:55
don't think we'll need a whole lot more
11:56
than that eh Nordic Point l has several
12:00
options for fly outs but for this trip
12:02
Steve and Dean have their pick of two
12:05
first is Zania Lake a small crater known
12:08
for Extraordinary numbers of eater siiz
12:11
walleye option two is Su Lake a large
12:15
body of water notorious for Tough
12:17
Fishing but providing a serious chance
12:19
at a fish of a lifetime the boys op for
12:22
option two Spirits are high when you
12:25
touch down on Su the boys unload onto a
12:28
dock at a breathtaking Outpost cabin
12:31
Mount their life scope on the boat and
12:33
strip down as a sun pounds the water
12:36
however within 10 minutes of the plane
12:38
leaving the wind from pero Lake catches
12:40
up with them bringing in gusts of 50 km
12:43
winds and scattering rain that'll stick
12:46
to them for the rest of the
12:47
day it was nice for a
12:51
minute folks we're 5 minutes not even 4
12:55
minutes away from the cottage and I was
12:58
in beautiful sun jacket off sun's out
13:02
guns out and man am I ever happy I got
13:05
this jacket boy cuz it's cold now it's
13:08
cold now the benefit of this weather is
13:10
that the boys have become pretty used to
13:11
it throughout the trip giving them a
13:13
good idea of the patterns these fish
13:14
will be in wind blown points and Islands
13:17
being the target of choice and it wasn't
13:20
long until this theory was once again
13:22
[Music]
13:25
confirmed so we got a warning from the
13:27
pilot on the way in here that this tends
13:29
to fish kind of tough and it's actually
13:31
because there's so much bait in here
13:33
that you're competing with just a huge
13:35
food source oh I got one oh it was a
13:40
pike I think it broke it it broke me
13:42
right off I saw him on the screen too
13:44
he's chasing
13:45
it good for you well all
13:51
right so folks I just wanted to uh let
13:55
you know what we've got going on today
13:57
we're flying in to Su Lake and this is
14:01
one of those situations that I love but
14:04
it can be a little bit stressful because
14:07
we're flying into a lake where right off
14:10
the bat we got a warning from the pilot
14:14
who said that you're going to need big
14:16
baits big live
14:19
suckers and that's because the fish here
14:22
are massive and I'm A Trophy Hunter I
14:25
love big fish but we're competing with a
14:28
hug huge Forge base and we're fishing in
14:32
conditions where we're dealing with the
14:36
30 to 40 mph gusts coming right down the
14:39
pipe so what we're doing is we're using
14:45
the elements to our advantage right now
14:48
and believe it or not we've got about a
14:51
a 1.4 to 1.6 mph drift going and I'm
14:56
trolling the oi out the back here
14:59
and uh we're going to try and use mother
15:02
nature to help us find some Giants so
15:05
this is what we've kind of been
15:06
contending with all day if you look here
15:08
on the Liv scope this this little point
15:11
we have here is absolutely loaded with
15:13
bait there's been some walleye and stuff
15:15
mixed in but trying to pick through this
15:18
bait when it's this competitive is uh
15:20
has been quite the task so far we are
15:24
getting the odd hit but um we may have
15:27
to try a new approach here to try to
15:29
separate us from this
15:30
[Music]
15:35
pack I think I got something little
15:39
here hopefully we don't need the net
15:41
don't need the net I don't think so oh
15:43
yeah no it's it's just a little Pike but
15:46
we'll net it cuz I don't want to lose
15:47
this bait Steve we packed light today
15:49
like we said at the start and the only
15:52
downside of that is that with Pike like
15:56
this around you lose a lot of tackle
16:02
you can see these
16:04
things these little black dots
16:06
everywhere we get asked about these all
16:08
the time by people it's actually called
16:10
black spot disease and it's a worm that
16:12
lays eggs in the skin a lot of people
16:14
are scared of eating them you can
16:16
actually eat them but it gives uh the
16:18
filet a bit of texture but um that's
16:22
what that is you you get them on perch a
16:24
lot you get them on Pike you get them on
16:26
crappy a ton um but almost every Pike I
16:29
find in canor here has them the fish it
16:33
doesn't really harm them but it does
16:34
spread when they get
16:36
[Music]
16:38
eaten yeah there's
16:41
one yeah how's it feel we're right in
16:43
that uh
16:45
wow uh we just it was I just picked it
16:48
up and dropped it down and you know it's
16:51
you want to get the net on that no no
16:54
you're good a baby Northern yeah little
16:56
baby Northern that's okay got him right
16:59
in the beak just picked it up off the
17:01
bottom and give it a little shake and I
17:02
felt as I let it go he nipped it soon as
17:06
he nipped it I I poked them right in the
17:09
right in the beak and you know what I'm
17:11
I'm thankful for that because I've got a
17:13
light floral leader on and a northern
17:16
this size would go right through that
17:20
leader very quickly okay go
17:23
home there you go off like a rocket
17:28
[Applause]
17:28
[Music]
17:37
today's hot spot is a deep break on sub
17:39
Lake one of Nordic Point Lodge's fly out
17:41
destinations the Waypoint on your screen
17:43
will get you there when visiting a lodge
17:45
like Nordic point if by chance they
17:47
offer a daily fly out opportunity then
17:49
you really should consider trying it out
17:52
it gives Anglers a unique add-on to an
17:54
already Excellent Adventure Dean and
17:56
Steve trolled Yu's looking for either
17:58
roaming fish or good structure and then
18:00
drifted over likely looking shs humps
18:03
Rock points and brake lines covering
18:05
water was the key for more hotspots like
18:07
this one check out fishing
18:09
[Music]
18:20
canada.com it's not big at all I hit him
18:23
on the bottom of the mouse so he was
18:24
coming in sideways I'm just going to
18:27
grab him
18:29
my
18:30
hand a that's
18:32
disappointing I really thought that that
18:34
was going to be a bigger
18:37
Northern or walleye and walleye would
18:40
have been nice but it felt like a
18:42
northern there we
18:44
go yeah definitely not what we're
18:46
after but fun to catch anyways it felt
18:51
huge bit
18:55
disappointing s back
19:00
[Applause]
19:01
that a boy Dino yeah that's not
19:05
small we'll get the net on that one
19:07
Steve if you can I'm got her don't you
19:08
worry brother that's staying right to
19:11
bottom usually when they stick down like
19:13
this they're normally pretty good
19:17
walleye my ability to to guess the
19:19
species though today hasn't been
19:23
great yeah I haven't even got a look at
19:25
it yet Steve that's awesome
19:29
I'm going to come around this other side
19:30
just taking a run on this
19:33
side oh it's a yeah there it is that's a
19:36
good one that's a good walleye oh
19:41
Dino nice oh yeah baby that's the one
19:47
that's the one what we been there we're
19:49
looking for brother here pass this back
19:52
Steve there you go I'm going to uh pass
19:54
this net to you and you can do the
19:57
honors this why we've got a lot of
19:59
equipment in a little boat lot of and
20:02
look at it look at
20:04
this straighten the hook completely
20:09
out as soon as it got in the net that
20:12
was really lucky that's a big fishal I'm
20:15
not surprised it could do that that's
20:16
just the way we play it I'm going to
20:18
bring it around this other side of the
20:20
boat so we've been hearing all about the
20:22
big walleye in this Lake and we had an
20:25
option to come out to a numbers Lake but
20:28
stepen and I wanted to go for some
20:29
bigger ones
20:31
and that's the first
20:34
one we've seen of that
20:37
kind Dandy that's why we picked this
20:40
Lake over the others we were looking for
20:42
some big ones and that's about what we
20:44
were after a Steve oh you think oh yeah
20:47
that's a beautiful fish beautiful W
20:50
right back she's gone out a boy Dino
21:01
as the boys were warned this ends up
21:03
being the only big fish of the day but
21:06
it's tough to complain when your fishing
21:08
destination looks like
21:10
this we want to give a final thank you
21:12
to everyone involved in this shoot to
21:14
Wilderness air for getting the boys in
21:16
and out of s Lake to our friends at TD
21:19
for their generous donation to the
21:20
Easter Seals and of course to Will and
21:23
Christa palowski for donating the trip
21:25
and letting us showcase their incredible
21:27
Fishery
21:32
getting there brought to you by The
21:34
Outdoor Journal Radio podcast
