[Music] and now another exciting episode in The Adventures of Outdoor Journal
0:06
radio well hello everybody thank you for joining us once again Outdoor Journal radio the podcast I'm Angel Biola he is
0:12
Peter Bowman Peter Bowman and we will be with you for the next oh I don't know
0:17
three four five six hours or so I come on now I can't afford that uh we promise
0:24
to keep it short short could be anything but you have our word we're going to
0:30
yeah if we get if we get up the beaten path Dean just stop us just throw like a throw that's it right there by you're
0:36
good point there is a lovely Dean Taylor buttons as usual and VBA right behind
0:42
the camera is he is he even Lovelier than Dean or is he as lovely as Dean or what about and I are going to be pretty
0:49
lovely this summer on the on the tour together on the on the shooting tour well what do you mean well cuz I'm going
0:54
to join him this summer in doing what I can't tell you it's a surprise boa ah
1:00
it's like a wardrobe thing maybe no you going to get vot of smoking cigars no
1:05
that only happened once do you remember that story no I don't yes you do remind meind BC oh I do remember that story you
1:14
got a little green on that one didn't you give him a beautiful Fuente or something like that I think and maybe i'
1:22
tell that story cuz it's a funny story uh we're by the way today's program is going to be uh no guest it's going to be
1:28
we're going to talk about the season that's ahead in terms of the fishing Canada shoot we're going to talk about some new little uh things inuendos and
1:35
stuff that we're going to throw in uh as a series unfolds here uh we're going to talk about him and I we're going to talk
1:42
about all kinds of before we do that the story with vaa
1:47
SOA is our camera dude he's our uh Director of Photography and do he's our
1:54
do so I hired him fresh uh from the Ukraine he had just come to this country
2:02
uh months if not weeks beforehand and we just happened to you know it was The
2:07
Perfect Storm we just happened to collide and and there we are next thing I know he's working with us and and and
2:13
within I I'm going to say two weeks of maybe even sooner of
2:19
him being hired his first shoot was to BC to uh Northern Rocky's LGE Northern
2:25
Rocky Lodge and beautiful place beautiful place and uh so here we are at
2:32
Northern Rocky's Lodge and at some point through the shoot as Pete and I normally do we'll light up a cigar after work
2:38
after the day is done we'll light light up a cigar and the three of us vaa Pete
2:44
and I were at this picnic table and I said who wants a cigar so of course Pete
2:50
said yeah hell yeah and I said Boba would you like a cigar and I don't even know whether he understood me at the
2:56
time but he he said yes so I got him a cigar we got a little beverage in hand
3:01
too of course we got a beverage too so you got to enhance the beverage with the cigar was it in a tudo oh but that's all
3:07
you carry when you have we have the bigger boys just so our tudo a beautiful like high nice little little be perfect
3:14
smoke so we spark them up and off we go and I'm thinking well that's really cool you
3:19
know it's a good thing that he smokes because we do like have have the odd
3:25
cigar and so we're going away and he's smoking away and we're smoking away and we're everything fine and then he
3:30
disappeared on us like like it was sort of one of those things where's baa I don't know do you see him no I don't
3:35
know he just disappeared on us anyways the bottom line was that uh no he was
3:42
not a cigar smoker and yeah he probably uh didn't understand or maybe understood
3:48
but he didn't want to stand out as being you know anti whatever and so he accepted the cigar and smoked it and
3:54
probably got himself all sick but never smoked again that was two years ago that was it'll be two years ago this spring
4:01
you tried one and that was one and done that was it so over uh that's my V the
4:06
problem the problem is a lot of times people don't understand they they don't even realize they're inhaling they
4:12
accidentally inhale or whatever and that's the killer right there especially in a nonsmoker remember Jordan oh my God
4:20
that uh Corona Cigar Company or whatever that that Cigar Bar in in Orlando oh
4:25
yeah Jordan got great he got sick man he we were in there having a great time time all of us smoking beautiful cigars
4:31
we all had our drinks going on there and it's an indoor environment you know it's very rare that you I mean in Canada you
4:37
can't even do that anywhere great great environment and then all of a sudden Jordan just come up and says boys uh I'm
4:43
not feeling so good about halfway through his cigar well oh he came up to me earlier on and he and he you know cuz
4:49
I said when we got there I said okay guys pick out cigars I'm buying everybody grab a cigar and just assuming
4:55
everybody was grabbing cigars were cigar smokers and uh about halfway through he come up to me is so how long are we
5:02
supposed to smoke these things I don't always you want he was
5:09
rough man oh he was green he got worse as time went on to he stopped the smoke and he just yeah it was ugly it's hard
5:15
to be in there though cuz there's like no oxygen in there it's all yeah there's no relief if you're not
5:22
no relief if you're not I mean if you love the smell of cigars you're in the perfect environment but I'll tell you why yeah you're you're encompassed by it
5:28
for sure God you didn't get sick that night no no no okay I'm good no dane was good was that was great way off track so
5:37
I said we were going to be short and here we go already 7 Minutes gone that's okay see any organically fun organically
5:45
fun and and people might they might like that they'll hear stories about us they've never heard that both a story before and even a dean there you know so
5:52
there you go uh today's show is going to be about hitting the road again on the
5:58
road again hell yeah no you need that you need the Willie Nelson on there I would put that but he's probably waiting
6:04
for later on when we get into can throw that in afterwards if it's not a copyright infringement no it's not no
6:10
hell no this is that time of year where you know I'll be honest with you folks
6:16
by late in the year whenever we finish the season whether it's October
6:22
November God forbid should we get it done in September but uh no you didn't
6:29
every year that time I don't know about Pete well I do know about Pete he's not quite as bad
6:34
as I am but I'm glad it's the end of the season man you're ready to tap tap I'm
6:40
going to tap one more outing and I'm tapping right uh but then something
6:45
strange happens in the offseason you know you you heal you rest you you're
6:51
whatever the case may be and and about February or March that's good oh man is
6:58
has the season ever going to start you know I want to get out of here sitting in a freaking office for months and
7:05
that's where we are right now we're a couple of weeks away from hitting the road for our 39th the show's
7:13
39th Road opening wow give me a hell yeah hell yeah for sure 39th Seas
7:20
congratulations buddy opening opening season trip holy mackerel that's crazy
7:26
and we got a good one to go on too so we'll talk about that in a bit but well go ahead well we're going to talk about that later aren't we aren't we going
7:33
to why not let's stick with Dean's plan maybe cuz he's got it all laid out let's not out all right um what do we got the
7:42
store let's go to the store Dean we always like to do that look at that new handsome looking piece of uh you should
7:50
have worn that you should have model you know what I should have put it on why didn't somebody remind me I've got my
7:55
nice there's a bunch of [ __ ] shirt on Dean why did they why did they see it's sander Vitus right now the
8:03
scientific name they did change that why did they change that because it used to be SOS stian vitrium and I know for a
8:10
fact you I did not know that they've changed that and I that's from napan that's just from this brain right but
8:16
your education was in nap born in Toronto or port credit I moved to Corona
8:23
and then I moved to napan then to Port Hope then to aswa so I've got a collective of a lot of uh Geographic
8:31
brainstorms but I thought the bulk of the education was what did I say the scientific name was an I don't know are
8:37
you kidding me Victor something or other Victor sniff Victor sniff he's a
8:43
freaking what do you call it pomy [Laughter]
8:49
doctor hey these lovely garments along with uh all sorts of wonderful new stuff
8:55
is sitting at uh the fishing Canada store now you can get there either by going through the front door which I
9:01
would recommend and suggest and that is go to fishing canada.com click on the store icon and
9:07
bof you're in the store or if you want to sneak through and get in the back door I don't know what the fascination
9:12
is with doing it through the back door but whatever it is uh you could go to a
9:18
shop. fishing canada.com as well and get all of your
9:24
fishing Canada merch and wonderful and take the poll and tell us what you want to see there's
9:29
a poll on there that's uh you know if you want to see something else on there why not right we can I mean you can ask
9:35
we might not deliver but they can ask yeah we're not going to get into a whole bunch of stuff that's not fishing Canada
9:42
merch related no but so don't don't say yeah I want to see I want to see you selling fishing rods and stuff no we're
9:49
not going to do that we are going to though we're going to very shortly I
9:54
don't know whether I'm at Liberty at this point but go uh we will have uh a
9:59
retailer joining us come on now very shortly as a major contributor to this
10:06
podcast and they have a tremendous e-commerce business that we can start
10:13
giving you advice on I'm looking forward to this yeah it's a biggie okay good it's a biggie good but we can't say
10:20
nothing yet how just they keep the locomotive ring here look nervous look at if be shaking over there don't do
10:27
it always do it don't I'm not going to do it I'm not going to do it I can tell you though it's coming
10:32
down the road and it's going to be great for uh for all of us for sure good um
10:37
listen your feedback Mr Bowman listen your feedback comes from Hunter 73 via Apple
10:44
podcasts uh Hunter listen I listen to the podcast all day at work love the
10:49
content from Canada only from Canada only Border City Lo Mr Alberta saskatch
10:55
me to read that over again so that people can understand what you're saying go ahead and read that right I listen to the podcast all day at work love the
11:03
content from Canada only Border City he's from Border City Canada's only
11:09
Border City I think he means it's not don't last on the end Canada it's not written see I'm trying to do a verba
11:16
love the content from Canada see what he's doing see everybody just to let you know he's trying to slag me and now he's
11:22
slagging I think he missed an apostrophe s buddy whoever you write this Stu in we
11:28
read verbatim okay if you want us to read it as if Hunter 73 you know you
11:34
ain't want to just add an apostrophe s in there if that's the case that makes sense what he's saying is making making sense now love the content from Canada's
11:42
only Border City Lloydminster Alberta SL just catch one there you go because it's
11:47
right on that border between the two you think Dean would have maybe printed that better a little help a little help you
11:52
know some appr it approved it had a great English teacher in napy
11:59
God he was good man he was a ah he he'd have corrected that yeah he'd have slagged me in front of the class for
12:04
sure but he' corrected it notice my little addition would you have a boo boo what happened I got a boo boo a bad boo
12:10
boo fing building a a shed in the backyard oh boy and uh oh boy like
12:18
what's the chances of this Happ screw nail didn't go into your finger did it no actually worse so part of the
12:25
construction involved using the self-tapping screws yeah right with with a built-in washer
12:33
on them yes I know those you know the ones and they got the little hex heads they put drill they drill themselves
12:38
exactly so and I'm and the Metal's very thick two layers of metal so you got to like give it some both pale full this KY
12:46
what what so i' I'm I'm two layers like an overlapping exactly exactly and so
12:52
you know I got to put everything into it really I can cuz they do dig a little bit they don't have we don't have to put
12:57
everything into them this metal this was was tough I I already done about 80 of them and there was like a half a dozen
13:04
left okay and it was in an awkward place stupid Philips head too right not Robertson no no it's not it's a octagon
13:11
head hex you you need a nut I had Nutri I had nut driver so you can really get some
13:18
oom oh yeah that's yeah that doesn't give out too often yeah so I'm on this thing and it's and and and it's starting
13:25
it's wobbling and stuff so I have to hold it I have to hold it you're holding the screw I have to buy the buy the
13:32
washer because that's the thickest part but the washer is all one piece of the head and and and and so now i' it and it
13:40
finally break no gloves what do you mind wear not winter summer when you're when
13:46
you're grabbing screws you might want to put a work glove on oh for God's sakes anyways um so it finally bites and of
13:54
course there's just too much pressure on it to St finger got stuck between the
13:59
washer and the steel and of course it just went and right and right to the
14:04
point where my cuz I had set the drag or whatever you call it on the drill sh the
14:13
drag one of those things right oh my God blister all of a sudden oh that is nasty
14:22
anybody that knows what an is talking about can picture anybody that doesn't know it just figure pinching your put
14:27
your finger between something and a drill and something flat that's all oh my God the blister uh when it your
14:35
sister it came out it was like a a small caterpillar like long and and it
14:42
was so I cut it open got the blood out yeah and so now I got to put a Band-Aid
14:47
on it because it'll get infected the worst part about this story by the way I'm telling this story for a reason I am
14:53
leaving next week for a trip to Vegas is that what do I do is that your finger what do I do with that finger I push the
15:01
button on the machines you're going to yeah yeah I'm very concerned about what's put a lot of uh poly boring on it
15:07
like every day every night like you make you heal it up and then at night time take that Band-Aid off like make sure
15:13
you don't keep the Band-Aid on contemplating wearing gloves down there won't you look like Michael jackon down
15:19
there one GL oh my God uh so where were we sorry
15:27
about that I did get off topic this podcast GNA go two and a half hours today Lloyd Minster we're done we're
15:33
done with Mr Lloyd there yes Huer from H Hunter said you said Hunter yeah sorry H
15:41
Huer I said Hunter and how did he come to us Dean uh Apple podcast he left a
15:46
festar review oh have you guys been to that town he might not do that now after we read after I butchered his name up he
15:53
got down to a two star after that story what have you guys been there to to Lloyd minister no or Minster it's pretty
16:00
interesting because it's Saskatchewan and Alberta yeah we've been we've been
16:05
on that border I know we have it the town and I'll tell you what it was for maybe this will ring a bell this was
16:12
Outdoor Journal television and we were shooting a dinosaur U episode yeah I
16:17
remember that in Saskatchewan somewhere no was Alberta was it Alberta yeah in Alberta from that's it yes and we had to
16:26
go through there and we stopped and we shot we did a little on camera about the fact that this was the only border city
16:32
either in Canada or North America I think it's Canada but I was there when I was 18 and in half the town you can
16:37
drink at 18 and the other half you can't right oh there's one popular side over there isn't
16:45
there W you got to move W was getting bored I see him he's going to Lloyd he
16:51
say moving I'm hurry God oh God help us sorry Huer thank you for that by the way
16:57
sorry for butchering name up but speaking of the podcast Network Outdoor Journal radio the podcast Network we
17:05
were weren't we is that come on now where we are now H hell yeah what about it well uh this is a from Mr Jerry wet
17:14
Under The Canopy episode 42 stinging nettle now I've heard about this stuff but I don't really know what it is a
17:19
stinging plant uh it's found near water Etc like that but I don't know if I've ever I think I've probably seen it a
17:26
thousand times but I wouldn't know what to do to recognize it not the one that's got that Dean you'd know that know that
17:32
it's got that little flower with the little things on no there's no flower on it that's a
17:37
thistle thistle it just looks like a weed with little spikes on it I had a buddy that used to call a girl from
17:43
Saria thistle that was her nickname thisle there's there reason I I have no idea all I know is she was
17:52
thistle she hung around the bars and stuff like that right you had there was Hazel there was Stella but there was but
17:58
thisle was different this was just a how would you come up with a nickname like that I have no
18:05
idea and apparently the stinging plant they the stings become harmless once cooked so if you cook it and then you
18:10
get stung it's harmless so is it harmful beforehand it gives you like like a rash
18:17
like poison ivy rash but Jerry he says you can eat them it's used for tea and
18:22
cooking is just beyond me just for him to discover it you know what I mean he
18:28
brought us a lot of stuff we had uh he brought us in leaks last was it leaks yeah wild leaks great stuff I have a
18:34
feeling that he uses you guys as giddy pigs okay he goes out on the way down here to record he stops on the side of
18:41
the road he sees something that's different other than grass and he picks it he brings it in there looks over
18:47
scours the internet if something even looks close it doesn't have to be it he just says this is the stinging nettle there meanwhile it's the Sarnia
18:56
thistle God used for diabetes and uh osteoarthritis you didn't think I could
19:02
handle that word no I know I know that word very well so that's why I thought I'd just throw that in you didn't think I could handle it you like you were
19:08
saving me as soon as you I was walking the rope and you you stepped on one good
19:13
foot of ice and the next one I said [ __ ] and you don't want to step there buddy I know you're you're going through bud uh
19:20
sometimes also used for urinary tract infections or UTI and who doesn't know
19:25
about those uh kidney stones en large prostate and hay fever and other conditions so
19:32
wow in other words if you're my age you should be you should be taking this
19:37
stuff regularly I ever tell you about the hay fever I used to get bad as a kid right and I'll tell you one quick story
19:43
on that I got it so bad one one night uh afternoon evening whatever my parents
19:49
were away for a bit my mom my mom was a nurse I got so bad that my eyes
19:54
literally swole shut like I could just barely see through my eyes it was I was
20:00
allergic to some in in the air the hay the more you as a kid you scratch your eyes you do all whatever helps to
20:06
alleviate the annoying mhm dude I had I let him let Mama note I says M I don't
20:11
know if this is a concern to you but I can't see my eyes are swollen so bad that's how bad I used to get it uh back
20:17
in the day that was nasty nasty and and what was the what was theet result it
20:23
would go away in a day it would go away yeah it would just eventually go away yeah usually you drive to if we were driving to a if we were camping fishing
20:29
or whatever you go to a certain area all of a sudden I'm just start just going nuts you know what I mean CU I know you're also allergic to
20:36
meetings and stuff with your eyes I know that I noticed that maybe it's a byproduct of that that's totally
20:41
different because because when we're in meetings and you know you got about a threshold of about 10 minutes in a meeting at most and then which is what a
20:47
meeting should last by and then you start yawning and you start doing this incredible way of rubbing your eyes like
20:53
it's not like like normal rubbing eyes you do it backwards have you noticed that so a double reverse M back it's a
20:58
double reverse momat rubbing your eyes so I know when I see you that's my signal to you unfortunately Angelo says
21:06
oh I better go another hour and a half in this meeting then now I'm looking over at that big people were having a meeting with they're all rubbing their
21:15
eyes I don't know how we got on but anyway this um stinging nettle um that's
21:24
being talked about on Under The Canopy the podcast by Jerry former minister of
21:30
Natural Resources Ontario by way it sounds like it might be a
21:35
solution to a lot of uh maladi so my question would be why AR people why
21:40
don't we hear more about this stuff well maybe if they listen to Jerry's newest podcast that's going to happen podcast
21:46
number 42 I mean stones and large prostate hay fever and other kind who hasn't got those I love I love at least
21:54
people looking into natural you know remedies I think that's a great thing because let's be honest
22:00
medicine it yeah it can cure one thing but it can cause another thing too right the medicines are kind of scary
22:05
sometimes and it's not just an age thing too although like I said people my age should pay attention to this because
22:10
obviously a lot of these symptoms are are associated with folks that right there that's called chag te my friend
22:16
that's called I went I went to the doctor I obviously when you get in your uh closer to the end than the beginning
22:23
let's put that way you have more fre days behind you than more frequent visits to the doctor and and uh as you
22:30
get older too you don't mind bringing your spouse with you cuz sometimes no and I'll tell you why there's no there's
22:36
a reason for this because sometimes you don't quite first of all you don't
22:41
understand all the words that these doctors are throwing out there and other times if you're like me a little hard of hearing a lot hard of hearing you you
22:49
you miss some of the messaging so as you get older I finally figured out why old guys take their wives with them because
22:54
they freaking interpreter that's an interpreter right so I went I went to uh
23:00
one of these recently and and uh so the doc it was just a general checkup and the doctor he um he said yeah I want to
23:07
I want to uh uh check just basic you know blood pressure I want to listen to your heart and all that you know yeah
23:16
and then he says yeah and then I'll um I'll give you some bronchial uh assessments and stuff and I didn't know
23:22
what he said and I said to my wife said what did he say oh he's going to check your bronchial tubes and stuff right
23:29
okay so any so he does his test and uh he says he says you're great everything
23:35
is good and I didn't hear I said my wife what did he say he says you're good everything's good you're good to go I
23:42
said good good good so I'm getting up to leave he says oh one one more thing he says I I think we should do um I want to
23:49
get a urine sample a stool sample and some blood as well so I said what did he
23:55
say and she says he wants you to leave your underwear behind
24:00
that's the thank [Laughter] you I was wondering the first where
24:06
you're were going I know I had to get it out of me I've been wanting that one for I've been holding that one in in the
24:13
news in the news a study finds recreational fishing accounts for 11% of
24:19
reported harvest in Inland Fisheries now I when I saw that headline that's in
24:25
fishing canada.com by the way when I saw that line first thing I thought of is
24:31
that's awfully low isn't it I would have thought that that number would have much higher 11% of it means that's there's uh
24:39
89% of somebody else harvesting fish right yeah but I thought is what that means yeah that's what I would I would
24:44
think Dean is that correct yeah yeah that's right see I would have thought Anglers would have accounted for a higher number than 11% well it mean it
24:51
means that there somebody else's harvesting a lot of fish in Inland Lakes no kidding a lot more than we expect I
24:56
can understand globally and and uh Global right this is worldwide worldwide
25:02
but it is Inland fishery I have to assume fresh water we're talking right yep yeah that's craziness yeah yeah yeah
25:10
I I would have thought we would have been much higher but maybe maybe because in Canada recreational fishing is is a much
25:18
larger thing than it is maybe worldwide be yeah if you looked at a Canadian percentage that number might be higher
25:23
versus for example in this article states that uh Canada is number one
25:28
obviously and that and Poland is number two which I found kind of odd but now that we sort of talk it over like this
25:35
they probably don't have the number of Anglers um pursuing fishing and and
25:42
catching and consuming but they probably have a huge commercial harvestry very that very well could be I mean it also
25:49
has Scandinavia and German Germany those have a high number of Anglers of of sporting Anglers that's for sure like
25:55
their Pike their Xander their perch uh that they go after in the Inland Lakes that's it's very popular over there so
26:03
um yeah that's interesting it says rot and real fishing is much more than a recreational activity it makes an important contribution to the diet of
26:09
many regions of the world so um that number there around 280 million
26:17
recreational Anglers I'm going to assume this is worldwide catch more than 1.3 million tons of freshwat fish every year
26:25
that's how do you feel about that that number 1.3 million tons how do I feel
26:30
about it well like can you envision it it's hard to even imagine it's hard to it's hard to imagine like we're talking
26:36
yeah especially when you're especially when you're talking uh Inland Lakes which you know the average fish might be
26:42
two pounds or a pound maybe a pound right or something like that I don't know like I said uh before Canada is
26:48
number one on that list so we we consume more freshwater per capita more
26:53
freshwater fish Inland water fish than any other nation in the world followed
27:00
by Poland and Argentina so Argentina wow eh I mean I always I always thought Argentina was
27:06
more of the trout no I thought the trout creeks and stuff and it was all the pristine fly fish and catch them release
27:11
and stuff like that the goldorado that's what I'm saying that's why I didn't know that they had a Inland
27:18
Lakes that you know have whatever in them I'm not sure what kind of fish are in there this uh the article goes on to
27:25
to tell us that you know uh this bodess well for an Ling in general because uh
27:30
uh people like Shane Mahoney who we met oh you were you I was there oh you were there de yeah uh we met him in Ottawa at
27:37
a function and oh my God I could sit there and listen to this guy for days um
27:42
because he's saying that if we want to keep
27:48
our fisheries and more importantly our right to fish and consume fish that we
27:55
catch or not consume just recreational angling in general we need to tie it to consumption it needs to become a tool to
28:04
get unfortunately I get that unun because we love our catch and release fishing we love eating fish too but we
28:09
could live without it if we had to but yeah you have to you have to tie that to uh consumption so that you can't people
28:15
will pick he look at those boys putting a Feed Bag on speaking of
28:20
consuming I love it I said look at that they got the beans and the corn going on fried taters and Pickel for sure while I
28:28
on that those that's what he's uh and he's uh advocating this he's traveling all over the world talking about that to
28:34
to angling communities and saying we need to change the way we sell angling
28:41
to the general public because his concern is that eventually it's going to
28:46
get harder and harder to justify what we love to do but if you tie it to
28:52
consumption which which 1.3 million tons of freshwater fish consumed every
28:59
year yeah it starts now the other the other side of that the do gter say well you're killing too many fish is 1.3
29:07
million tons of fish a year you you can't be doing that meanwhile they go home and eat fish that they bought that
29:12
were killed which is perfectly fine in their mind right of course but that's the same ARG same argument we have for
29:19
for hunting yeah right yeah yeah people don't realize that how much good let's
29:25
say the country of Canada in particular I moose hunting will use an example there's a lot of study that goes into
29:32
the harvesting of moose you know what I mean let them run rampant let them run wild and watch out Bears Bears coach
29:39
Bears yeah any of those now neither one of those products are available
29:45
commercially right right so the only way you can get moose and or bear is to to
29:51
harvest it or or have a friend who who will harvest for you which a lot of people do by the way yeah a lot of
29:58
people that don't either don't hunt or maybe don't think that hunting is right they still have buddies who bring them m
30:06
a moose steak now and then yeah I've had my buddies have given me benison every now and then you know I love it right I don't deer hunt my uh I'll give you a
30:12
very quick example of that was Grandpa Bowman Clarence Bowman way back in the whatever 1940s or whatever they were up
30:19
in Sevan Ontario way up northern northern Ontario and he was a surveyor my grandpa but he was also a total
30:26
Bushman and the town would literally if they couldn't get out deer hunting they would I don't know even know if it was legal or not they'd give him his their
30:32
tags here Clarence can you take the tag and get me a deer he'd be shooting deer for everybody you get the deer is that
30:38
legal it might I don't know back then not now but that was in the 1940s or 30s or whatever it was you know what I mean
30:44
so he just go he'd be on a surveying route and he just say hey Bill I got your deer for you come on I and get it you know go get crazy yeah so but that
30:53
was a way of life I mean that was true consumption God they were poor everybody was poor back then yeah there was no
30:59
hunting involved they were out they wanted to get a deer for suance right y
31:04
so anyways it's an interesting article it's worth looking at because he's addressing us as Anglers
31:12
and Outdoors people we just need to portray what we love to do a little bit differently moving forward and he's
31:18
absolutely right he's a fascinating speaker if you ever get a chance to uh to listen to does he have anything on uh
31:24
on online D conservation Visions it's called that's his website and there's a bunch of there's a bunch of videos and
31:31
stuff on there we're trying to get him on he might end up on here soon so tremendously insightful spending uh or
31:37
listening to him whether you're doing it live or on YouTube for a half hour will
31:42
change your perception of what you thought was etched in stone up until now
31:48
because he's got some great viewpoints good for him yeah good for him and and he's a very Dynamic speaker too that
31:53
doesn't hurt yeah but anyways that story is available right now on fishing Canada if you want to read it come on now when
32:00
you're when you're there buying your swag when you're buying your W Hood swag is there any swag in that picture yeah well it's an Ontario swag in there yeah
32:07
yeah yeah we should bring those Canada hats fishing Canada hats we yeah we should request those the Ontario jean
32:14
jacket the jean jacket yeah it's a jean shirt that was shirt I have one of those
32:19
too by the way and that's what do you get there you got a hoodie oh you got something else Ontario on there look at
32:24
you guys black look at me all black dough Blackbeard oh you're a pirate hey
32:30
Blackbeard nice uh uh this week's ban question we got to move on Mr Bowman Mr
32:36
yes this is from Steven Anastasia Steven's given us before hasn't he yeah it looks familiar yeah it does look
32:42
familiar uh via email quote I hate when I'm anchored SL drifting in a wide open
32:48
Lake and another boat comes right next to me and starts casting I hear you buddy on that one what are some of the
32:54
what are some of fishing's Unwritten rules that you feel are often ignored
32:59
well that's a good that's a good point he makes because it does happen out there and it happens more often ice fishing is another ice fishing is huge
33:07
and and for some reason walleye fishing really attracts the crowds right instead
33:12
of you know finding your own patch of fish finding food you know it's food
33:17
that's why cuz they're going to eat them they're going to eat them that's why that species would attract more of this
33:25
let's get over there right away he's going to get them all before we get I mean whereas bass fisher might not have that same but but even so like if you're
33:32
fishing you know a weed L and somebody Pops in remember we used to get somebody popping in in front of us you were working left or right and they go in
33:37
front of you that was an [ __ ] move of the century right there hate oh yeah yeah yeah well we found the spot too
33:44
well good for you go behind you then yeah fish clean up behind me cuz I didn't catch them all yeah there's yeah
33:49
it's it's definitely I don't know if there's any Unwritten rules but I mean we try our best not to do that if uh if
33:57
we in a big group of people obviously like at a fishing lodge or something they're all saying guys come on over then you come on over but you don't
34:03
really in on them when when have we done that not not really yeah no we like to we we're we're kind of loners in that
34:10
sense we like to I have a get off the I got a story that I just heard um a buddy
34:15
of mine I won't name any names in this thing so a a fishing friend of mine was out one day with his daughter crappie
34:23
fishing H and in the middle of the lake and it took him an hour this Lake was Barren he said there was Zero Anglers on
34:29
it took him an hour and a half to find a school of crappy with his side Viner
34:35
he's using his gar sidefinder he a gt54 on that one buddy and he found the school of crappy they set up they
34:41
anchored or whatever locked his trolling motor and they proceeded to start catching fish after fish after fish it
34:48
was beautiful it was a riot him and his daughter and then this boat they came right in between him and the school of
34:55
fish like where he was casting and they dropped the ranker right there and proceeded to just boom boom boom boom
35:01
and he looked at his daughter and he said is this for real and she said don't do it and he did it he lit into them
35:08
like there was no he says I never lit into anybody in my life like I lit into these [ __ ] that did that to me like
35:14
that and then after that I don't know if they left or he left or both but I think he might have shamed him into getting
35:20
the hell out of there or whatever but they literally got between him and his fishing area and a lake that's miles upon miles upon miles they saw him fish
35:28
they can reading in on some people have got balls the size of like what the hell is that dinosaurs you know what I mean I
35:34
remember I not to get off top but I remember and you remember it well we were fishing a tournament one time and
35:41
um we and I won't get into the details because it's irrelevant but we stumbled
35:47
onto this totally obscure pattern but more importantly
35:53
location literally in the middle of a giant Lake we found it purely by
36:01
accident but anyways it was loaded with Fish And we were so far in the middle of
36:07
the lake that nobody in there there was nobody that could have seen us out there it that's how far away it was from
36:14
Shore and on the first day we absolutely annihilated him we had we were first and
36:20
second in the tournament let him up good didn't lit him up real good right and so the second day and and of course not a
36:26
soul we could hear everybody running around the lake but we couldn't really
36:31
see very very that you know what I mean we couldn't see a lot of boats which means they couldn't see
36:36
us and then on the second day about an hour after we got there yep we started
36:43
he in this boat and we're catching fish like crazy and we started here in this boat and it sounded like it was coming
36:49
our way but it was so far away we couldn't really see it yet sure as hell there it was Guy two competitors were
36:58
coming our way and uh they stopped about
37:03
100 ft away from us mhm remember maybe that guy in that picture where I want
37:08
that picture back with Reno that last picture I need Reno that guy over there for people that are watching that boy
37:13
there for people that don't are not watching the opposite of Angelo his brother Reno is right there okay so
37:20
anyways these guys and we're like beside ourselves we said those sons of [ __ ]
37:26
they had they did creep in too they come off plane and then you could see them they were fishing we knew where they
37:32
were in 60 ft of water they're fishing nothing and we were in 12 you know 8ot of water so but they made like they had
37:38
a spot yeah they were working their way towards us well that's the last thing I I don't
37:45
imagine they've ever done that again because uh they got right on top of us
37:50
and then Big Brother Reno oh my God he gave them a wherewithal that he light he
37:57
L into them like there was and that was vintage Reno boy you do not want to just cross Reno because he was he was good at
38:04
vocalizing his opinion and and those boys he shamed them right off there they get the hell out they just they left you
38:10
know to to answer uh Stefan here on this question sometimes that's what you need
38:15
to do if somebody does that to you then it's just pure to me it's either
38:22
ignorance or or just don't give a damn yeah you know what I mean
38:31
whatever I want well you know what that's when you got to get up on the bow that boat stand on your tippy toes and
38:37
you say nuh-uh kiss me ARS get out of here that's just not right even though
38:42
there's nothing written it's it's it's it's an Unwritten rule you know I mean he's asking what is the what are some of
38:48
the UN Unwritten rules there's no Unwritten rules but let's just be honest we we like to give each other space and
38:54
and you know other boats space I don't know what kind of distance space space would be like 100 or 200 yards 100 yards
39:00
is probably may be something decent but I'm thinking of that day when R barked at that guy they just they just they
39:08
were stunned pulled up pulled out their electric motor sat down turned the boat around and we could hear him running
39:14
away for an hour it's like when your dog runs away from you and you're in Saskatchewan you see the dog running
39:20
away for an hour well that's what they did we could hear them we could see them we could hear them take it off yeah we
39:26
never did find out who they no no we didn't we were thinking they might approach us at weighin and but they
39:31
never did no I think they were embarrassed I mean you're on a spot all day on Saturday with no boats on it and
39:37
then you half the day Sunday and then all the guy Creeps in on the number one and two position boats in the tournament
39:43
like that I think there might be something to be said for that oh God it was hilarious anyways uh that's it uh
39:49
Stefan hopefully that answered there is no underwritten rule but you kind of got to maybe you could vocalize without
39:55
being too crazy I guess maybe I I think you might also when I said there's two reasons either ignorance meaning they
40:01
didn't realize that that they're doing that or just they don't give a damn so the only way to find out is to like he
40:08
said vocalize a little bit say hey guys you know we've been here for an hour uh there s like we' really appreciate if we
40:14
did now if they don't accept that or acknowledge that or react to that then
40:20
yeah get up on your toes and let him have one you know shoot one over the bow tungsten tungsten 1 o weight doesn't
40:26
doesn't tickle ahead you know don't say that if you're an accurate
40:32
Caster anyways uh hopefully that answers your question now one thing I do want to
40:37
say before we leave the fan question of the week so you said when you read the name you said that looks awfully
40:43
familiar um I've seen that name before and Dean acknowledged the fact that that
40:48
there was this this particular person has had a question read on the air
40:54
before he leaves reviews and stuff I think we've read one of his reviews cuz I was going to say it just attests to
40:59
what I have been saying forever that you reach in these are just by random you
41:04
reach into the drum and pull them out every week uh because had had you were
41:09
you not pulling them out random you certainly wouldn't have had another question from a previous question ask
41:16
I'm I'm I'm on your side on he ask good questions maybe I'm on your side it was just random says Fair what's fair is
41:23
fair you know what I mean if he pulls them twice he pulls them twice he can't put them back in the bin say oh no I am
41:39
right The Humble goldfish everyone's favorite aquatic pet it's small easy to
41:45
care for what's there not to love even the cat may be mesmerized by the color and movements of your aquarium friends
41:51
goldfish are great at home but don't let them loose releasing goldfish or other domestic aquatic pets or plants into
41:58
natural environments is harmful to both your pet and the planet Gish disrupt ecosystems by out competing native
42:05
species for food and resources in degraded habitats they contribute to algae blooms they kill aquatic wildlife
42:11
and pass viruses and diseases contracted in aquariums to Wildfish they could even live up to 40 years and grow as big as a
42:18
football Anglers this is where you come in if you find a goldfish at your local
42:24
fishing spot report it to the invading species hotline or go online to Ed
42:30
maps.com remember to never dump your live bait into the water and risk spreading other Aquatic Invaders keep
42:36
our legs free from Invaders and don't let them [Music]
42:47
loose how did a Small Town sheet metal mechanic come to build one of Canada's most iconic Fishing lodges I'm your host
42:54
Steve NS wikii and you'll find out about that and a whole lot more on the Outdoor
43:00
Journal radio Network's newest podcast Diaries of a lodge owner but this
43:06
podcast will be more than that every week on Diaries of a lodge owner I'm going to introduce you to a ton of great
43:13
people share their stories of our trials tribulations and
43:18
Inspirations learn and have plenty of laughs along the way Meanwhile we're sitting there bobbing along trying to
43:24
figure out how to catch a bass and we both decided one day we were going to be
43:29
on television doing a fishing show my hands get sore a little bit when I'm reeling in all those bass in the
43:35
summertime but that's might be for more fishing than it was punching from you so
43:40
confidently you said hey Pat have you ever eaten a drun find Diaries of a lodge owner now on Spotify Apple
43:48
podcasts or wherever you get your podcast on the road again on the road
43:56
again he pushing buttons frantic he's got nothing no I have nothing got nothing
44:01
it'll be done in post I saw him pushing I saw him pushing but it did got a nice big logo up there it'll be done in post
44:09
boy so as we sit at top of the uh program we are embarking on our 39th road trip um wow yeah holy four
44:19
decades that is crazy and we're looking forward it we're we've been we've been hunkered down like everybody else during
44:25
the winter period hunker down wait to get back out again for open water fishing and we are chomping heading out
44:31
chomping at the bit Yeah Baby First up how do you want to do this do you want to go through our our stops or well no
44:39
let's talk about this one of the new elements uh on the show well not on the show one of the new elements that we'll
44:45
be working on on the shoots the video podcast that's it wow look at
44:52
that you can hide your own when you guys make these decisions without me you were
44:57
in the meeting I think you were sitting right there was I sitting right here in this I think at that point he was doing
45:03
the double eye then boys I'm thinking about the large M bass that I caught three years ago off of point an in
45:10
Belleville yes indeed so there you go we're going to video podcast instead of
45:16
well we do record on the road we have in the past recorded audio right once wasn't it no yeah yeah all season last
45:22
year we did them from the road but they weren't always we we did them at hotel sometimes and they wer we tried to
45:29
structure them like we do these ones so what we're going to do because Mr Bowman was absent that day when we had the
45:35
meeting just that portion of the meeting apparently he was gone my mind was he was there in body but not in mind so
45:42
what we're going to do uh a lot of you have requested to let us let you in on
45:49
the behind the scenes on the fishing Canada show because uh after watching for so many years you know there's a lot
45:56
more going on than what we managed to cram into a 22 minute uh like our our
46:02
crew getting sick on cigars stuff like that there that too right you so this is going to be a little more um of a behind
46:08
the scenes a look into what happens on these shoots uh we are going to be doing it
46:14
fresh off the water which I think is the important element here we're not going to have time to kind of regroup rethink
46:21
uh makeup uh although we will have makeup apparently vola will have his makeup up kit with him we might we'll
46:29
have nice Sun Tans by then our faces will be all beautifully tanned we might not need it so uh but these are going to
46:34
be a little grittier than we've done in the past now you're getting M we've
46:39
spent we've spent by by when we do one of these we have probably been on the water for I don't know 13 hours 14 hours
46:47
and we're we're knackered we're knackered thank you we knackered and we will be talking
46:55
about our activity during the day a lot of it I kind of do remember this talk now I think I woke up maybe halfway
47:01
through that meeting I think I'm getting on to this we have a cigar too you exactly now I remember we got a be a
47:07
cigar involved I'm on to it now I like this I like where you're going we're going to tell you what happened that day
47:13
we're going to be as open and blunt and honest if we had a bad day we're going to talk to you about a bad day which is
47:18
good by the way because bad days is when you learn good days you don't learn a
47:24
whole lot you're just having at it but bad days there's a lot of learning happening so we're going to we're going
47:29
to share with you both good and bad uh but we're going to be the important thing is we're going to be fresh off the water so within within a half hour of
47:38
getting the boat uh either up on the trailer or tied to the dock wow every day of the shoot or just
47:44
one no just once uh once a shoot okay okay I like that every day like he
47:50
seriously doesn't remember being a dis speeding deed well you're saying on day on the water well these shoots are more than one day probably do the last day so
47:56
we can kind of summarize the whole thing that's a good idea I think we do the last day but they won't be as long and
48:02
they won't be as structured as these so we're not we're not going to cover the news no there' be nothing yeah oh I'm
48:08
loving this I love this idea guys when did you guys come up with
48:13
it freaking idiot K the joys of Peter Bowman it
48:20
doesn't get a better now all right and by the way like is you know how you get those bad bad days of memory yes
48:27
whatever was yesterday or today I I can't even remember now I had one of those days the other day I'm just thinking it was yesterday holy [ __ ] I
48:34
can't remember that I can't remember that I can't remember it was like a complete day of not remembering way off
48:40
the the normal bad game that I am I'm on I was way off that game even it was just like scary scary it's scary it is scary
48:47
buddy I don't know what we can do about it but we oh my if anybody out there listening to this by the way that I
48:54
don't know has any uh opinion and or maybe solution or help or
49:00
whatever we have a real bad memory problem now it's it's selective yeah it
49:06
is selective but boy the cup is full and it's running over nothing seems to stick
49:13
in there anymore wow yes that was a let us know if there's a solution maybe some food maybe some kind of Jerry should
49:19
Jerry can Jerry will tell you he'll go outside and pick s thisle s thisle is
49:25
good for you no he he actually he has given me some uh opinions cuz he's not a
49:32
medical professional so he can only give you an opinion correct um you're on
49:37
chaga aren't you at right here bud and you do it every day every every day through the week yeah Monday to Friday
49:43
okay so clearly chaga is not helping not my memory no that's for sure all right no I'm just saying for sure cuz I think
49:49
he did tell me it was good for that but all right oh well I got I got to up my count a little bit then I my intake is a
49:56
little low obviously the 24 shoots schedule my friend we have 24 shoots to do the 2024 shoots [ __ ] I was going to
50:04
say we are in trouble boy starting we're going to our first shoot is in a couple of weeks from this podcast from
50:10
recording this podcast I don't know when this podcast airs it doesn't matter a couple weeks from today um we're going
50:15
to Northwest Ontario which is one of our favorite areas to go which is whoever's been there and uh has experienced the
50:22
fishing up there and the trip up there and the people up there it's just outstanding on all aspects right so we're going to our first spot is Nordic
50:29
Point Lodge on pero Lake which is right nestled to the west of laxu exactly if
50:36
you looked at that not very far at all right which is Fish Country let's be honest that you know that whole area uh
50:44
is great for fishing so and then that said will has got a he's been I don't
50:50
know how long he's been with the lodge a couple years now or something he's working he bought it no he bought it
50:55
he's in Partnership right partnership not that long ago years and he's been working real hard at getting this place
51:02
uh you know in order and we hooked up with them and it's going to be I think it's going to be an outstanding uh
51:08
couple of shoots we're going to do a couple of shoots up there so um Whiley and Pike well well they got that silver
51:14
Pike in that Lake in par Lake Silver Pike which is we love to get one those yeah if get one of those on camera
51:21
that'd be a first for sure I talked to will the other day he got a 32 iner last week oh wow so if they stay on them that
51:27
might be our our show yeah you do that or they're going to catch a ball and yeah that's the other thing I've been
51:33
through that before Oh my God there's something there's a quick story for you we well yeah we we looked out for the
51:39
fish for you guys the fishing Canada guys come on over here we got 200 in the last week uh okay thank you and they're
51:46
all in the cooler that's the best yeah we've had that too so but that's going to be good we got Will's got they also
51:52
have some fly out lake so they have the main Lake of course and then they have fly out service to these small little
51:57
out lakes and all that so it should be a very interesting multi-species shoot I mean everything from from crappie to
52:04
lake trout are there and everything in between right I think the only there's one season that's not open musky musky
52:09
is not open when we get up there but everything else they have that early bass or all year bass Catch relase
52:14
season early in the year and then everything else is uh pretty much wide open so and guaranteed to have plenty of
52:22
uh black flies and mosquitoes
52:27
I'm looking directly at my my buddy yeah well the horse flies no that won't because it's too early for that there're
52:34
summer guys right deer flies and horseflies they like the Heat and I don't know I got a feeling you're going
52:40
to be blackfly City and then maybe some mosquitoes will be following in when we're there you never know I never trust
52:46
early Seasons like this never I never say never because I when I do I'm always
52:53
uh disappointed and shocked I always say the first two shoots of the year she's a
52:59
crap shoot whether you're going to be okay or not with with regards to bugs right but right well that's that's going
53:06
to be that's a double shoot so but after that we're going to Lumberjack Lodge on sturgeon it's another Sturgeon Lake so it's not that far it's due east I think
53:14
of where we're going to East black a little bit South too East yeah yeah yeah and and again it's going to that's a
53:20
that's a a lake trout lake for numbers but the walleye fishery there is um it's
53:26
not a num fishery as a rule but it's got big ones so that's what I'm really looking forward toig well I mean they're talk I mean you
53:33
know typical Northern the further north you go it's harder to catch those 30in plus fish right but this seems to have a
53:40
good run of that 24 to 27 28 in fish you know some four five to seven eight
53:46
Pounders um yeah and and of course the big ones too and I think we're going to we're going to be putting our
53:51
Electronics to use in that one I think that's going to be a real eye opener for you know getting our our side finding
53:57
going out there um of course Liv scoping the whole nine yards I think we're going to really because we'll have our own uh
54:03
rig on these shoots right both of these shoots yeah yeah yeah which is nice yeah we're bringing up the the new
54:09
Princecraft so nice and we got her we're get we're dialing her in right now as we speak we're play around with uh some of
54:15
the Garment stuff we're going to have some fun with it but uh y we're mounting them in different positions this year
54:20
doing stuff like that but you know a pole mount versus trolling motor mount stuff like that so we'll be able to explain a lot of that to the AUD as well
54:27
and we'll be able to talk about that on the podcast that we produce oh my God you kidding me'll be a big talk about
54:33
out all day especially of what we're talking about what we've been discussing last few weeks Works we're experimenting
54:39
with with some new uh some new uh ways of deploying the technology and if it
54:46
works oh my God we'll have some fun gab Cher we're going to have some fun so we probably won't do we probably won't do L
54:52
trro there because we have later on we'll talk about a shoot that's coming up this be bigger L drop so so that's uh
54:58
two locations the Third location we are as The Rock would say
55:04
finally The Rock has got back to the Northwest Territories give me a hell
55:09
yeah hey I don't like that guy so so we're heading to Great Slave Lake it's
55:16
been oh my God almost 20 years since we have shot yeah it's been a while it's
55:22
been a long we're going to BR bant Lodge which is a really really I think an
55:28
unusual might be a one of lodge because great Slave Lake he just mentioned lake
55:35
trout well great Slave Lake that's what it's known for one of the best in the world in the world people people pay
55:41
tremendous amounts of money to go to Great slave and fish for these giant lake trout I mean giant lake trout
55:49
getting a 30 pounder is no okay big deal you got to get closer to 50 to really
55:55
start getting excited about the lake trout on great slave we're going to a place that has no lake trout on great
56:02
Slave oh my right that's right George and that's one of the reasons we're
56:08
going there how this how this whole shoot came about is kind of a miracle anyways we it came about from a trip
56:16
that we made to the Rocky Mountains in in northeastern British Columbia several
56:21
years ago and fished for walleye in the Rockies which was totally un usual at
56:26
the time for us now we know it's not unusual but we started looking into why
56:33
are these fish here why are there walleye in in the Rockies and lo and behold everything is tied to the
56:39
MacKenzie River that flows flows there and the McKenzie dumps into great
56:46
slave right where this Lodge is literally sitting they're sitting on the mouth of the of the river and all they
56:54
have is walleye and giant Northern no lake trout
57:01
so we thought what a cool place to shoot obviously a shallow portion a shallow end of that Lake right so I mean we know
57:07
there's we fished uh the Yellow Knife River before yes right near Yellow knife and we got great pike fishing in
57:14
remember that that was cool that was fun seeing those logs laying down there and catching them up so and then look all
57:19
the little Bays if you go to a lot sometimes you'll have the odd Bay or whatever but it's lak trout mostly 99%
57:25
and then a bit of Pike but this is the opposite because of that just shallow yeah so it's obviously it doesn't have
57:31
the depth to support lake trout right I would assume you have to travel probably quite a way from the lodge to get to the
57:36
lake drout water I would think it must be just a big huge Bas but if it was as easy as that you would think that they
57:42
would have it available right they would have it available on their website when
57:48
you go to a Broadband Lodge you'll see uh you know you know what if it's you know how big Great slave is there could
57:54
be 25 mile run to get to that they're saying I don't want to put our customers out that far and that's you know it
58:01
might be a danger issue or whatever like that and why if you're going to go up there and you don't want lake trout and
58:07
you want Pike this is better because the pike because we've got Pike in another Lodge we went to we caught some Pike in
58:14
one of the rivers that come in and they weren't world class Pike it wasn't like oh my God we're going to get a Giants
58:20
they weren't Giants we were surprised at the size of the pike it was fun you got them every cast but they weren't Giants
58:25
here I think they're going to be be some giant fish C fun so that podcast that we do from there will be a a guarantee you
58:33
want to check out that one might have to be inside cuz the bugs look pretty bad
58:38
yeah bugs so you going to do a podcast from there you use the their Wi-Fi or
58:44
how does how does that work no we're going to do it all on the board here and then un this camera just record it all and just okay yeah cool cuz there'd be
58:50
no service up there for anything whatsoever right you said that the two previous locations we yeah bugs bugs
58:58
might not be an issue you guys do will be an issue on this shoot okay I
59:03
guarantee you are we bringing the big dragonflies with us you going you're going to get some I'm going to get some of those those you know those funky
59:10
looking things that you pin onto your hat you might we're going to try it because it might look a little bit weird
59:16
this year folks weirder than normal this year folks when you see dragonflies off the boat and off the hats and off our
59:21
shoulders and stuff oh God anything to to alleviate those deer and horse flies
59:26
at least right if we survive that we're planning on being at shower Lodge as our
59:32
next shoot we haven't been there for a few years The Rock returns again right The Rock returns yeah on the upper
59:37
French River yeah that'll be fun under new ownership the interesting part of that shoot is that uh Steve n Wiki who
59:44
is part of our crew uh who was the previous owner of show deer will have an opportunity
59:50
to uh do an episode or be part of an episode from the other standpoint from
59:55
the other side uh from what he's normally used to which is being the the
1:00:01
host and owner of short right now he's going to be the host of the fishing Canada show working with the hosts of
1:00:08
Shier so it's going to be an interesting Dynamics and he has learned a lot over the years right 10 years of owning that
1:00:13
Lodge with working with all those guides he has definitely built some knowledge into that head of his so yeah for sure
1:00:20
uh from there we're off to Lon Lon Lodge on there's our lake trout shoot right there I haven't been there for long I
1:00:26
know again yeah so that's going to be I think this is going to be a really interesting shoot because the the lodge
1:00:33
owner at Lun Lodge is on to Big Lakers and big Walley at the same time no yeah
1:00:39
so it's not just going to be you're thinking tagami the lake trout lake yeah there's some giant walleye in that lake so now by that time of year because I'm
1:00:46
doing the math here we'll be well into July yep right July is August Midsummer
1:00:52
yep so these are all going to be deep deep fish obviously deep fish deep fish deep related if nothing else they're
1:00:57
relating to deep bait etc etc so the Lakers for sure going to be deep are we going to be able to use our uh our
1:01:04
62 oh hell yeah that's the lake to do it on boy right there we get on to a lake
1:01:09
trout bite are you kidding me we got a new toy uh on uh the boat it's a new um
1:01:17
Garmin part of the Garmin lineup uh normally what most people will use is a
1:01:24
34 uh um transducer for Liv scope and this is a
1:01:30
62 so the difference with it is that it will
1:01:35
transmit um a signal up to 500 ft yeah it's effective from 300 to 500 ft so
1:01:42
obviously for us it's going to be perfect yeah cuz we probably fishing 100 plus you know to 100 plus but you know
1:01:48
you're scanning and scoping throughout that whole range so uh that transducer is designed for salt water but it's also
1:01:55
they said well you know what Great Lakes Anglers and uh you know deep lake trout Anglers can use it as well it's not just
1:02:01
just pigeon hole for salt water that's how was designed but there going to be a lot of power in that baby and we'll we've never used it before so we'll be
1:02:07
able to report on that one as well on the podcast that originates uh from uh from Lon Lodge Lon Lodge it's going to
1:02:14
be a fun one we going to see Jimmy grayon too oh that's right Jimmy's on that L jimy on that Lake got to have to
1:02:20
coordinate a little visit with Jimmy for sure so l o baba Lodge this is one we've
1:02:25
never been to for so this is a a new one for us and again this is a lake trout and Walley Lake but well and Smallmouth
1:02:33
but we'll probably concentr on small mouth on this Lake and they have Outback Lakes out Lakes you know you can you can
1:02:39
I think you boat over to these little uh Landings and you Portage in I don't think he has fly out Sayes he it's not
1:02:44
fly out no and you Portage into these other lakes that he has available and those I I love those kind of shoots you
1:02:50
know what I mean there's just something different if the if the main lake is shut down or you want to get a second shoot or whatever it is you know you can
1:02:56
you bring your brook trout gear in and and you scoot in with a little ttin you know tiny Mercury motor or something
1:03:02
like that and and troll around for brookies or or whatever species you can go for you know what I mean you know
1:03:08
what I may I'm I stand to be corrected on that I think he does have fly oats oh really okay yeah I remember something
1:03:15
now cool even even better I mean you even get more uh harder to access area
1:03:20
so a lot of these lodges that we go to do offer that they have their main Lodge and if you want to get that package you
1:03:26
know you uh Nordic Point's another example that we're doing this year and that you could stay at the main Lodge fish the main Lake but however if you
1:03:32
want to upgrade your package pay a little bit more money um you can do a a Pike Lake in the you know in the 20
1:03:39
minute flight or whatever like that or or a Wally like for numbers you know you want to catch 200 Wall in a day no
1:03:45
problem doing that and they usually have different species and different opportunities so these are really things you look at when you're when you're
1:03:50
going to a lodge and it's a nice little upgrade for sure when you do it you know from there we Head East oh boy go east
1:03:58
young man or is that West uh that's East young man that's East uh the St John
1:04:04
River uh in New Brunswick we're going to be down there for an extended visit and
1:04:09
we're going to hopefully do a bit of a popery in terms of species although
1:04:15
we're kind of hoping we can get into a couple of those big fall stripers are we
1:04:21
not doing large MTH out there we are too but we're doing a poper okay okay we're going to they want to do uh here's
1:04:28
what's available typ I like that I like that even more there a lot available large imagine that large M bass in New
1:04:36
Brunswick and they're there folks they are there it's it's a kind of a I don't
1:04:41
know if the boys are keeping it a secret or not I mean it's getting overpowered by the small Mall population she ain't
1:04:46
going to be a secret after we're done we're going to make sure that people know about it for sure so it's going to that's going to be a cool shoot if we
1:04:52
can get on even a couple large mouth in there you two stripers too small Mo too too large both you got a nice little show right there you know what I mean
1:04:58
sturgeon yeah stury the Atlantic sturgeon yeah there all kinds of opportunities on St John the thing is it
1:05:05
it is a cornicopia for Anglers uh because because not only is it a
1:05:10
wonderful tourist tourism destination but it's a great way to uh sell it to
1:05:18
the partner you know let's go to let's go to new let's go to frederickton uh to vacation this this fall mhm what are we
1:05:26
going to do well you know there's all kinds of interesting things to do we could do from uh I don't know the cabat
1:05:31
trail in novas we there's so many things we can do in that area it'll be fun and if we have some time we we can go
1:05:37
fishing too and they're large MTH bass there that's where you're going maybe I don't
1:05:43
know the fishing Canada guys said there might be I don't know uh from there we're off to the Bay
1:05:49
of funy yeah back probably the minus Basin right the minus Basin on B A Fundy
1:05:56
sort we're back with Greg Bello Greg Bello Bass Barn Charters Bass Barn yeah
1:06:02
we're going to do another striper shoot there um we're not sure interesting one though fascinating we're going to we're
1:06:07
we're hoping to maybe hit them on both different Tides because it's such a different fishery so the last time we we
1:06:13
shot there we had to literally wait for a river to fill up with water cuz the boat launch was dry so once the tide
1:06:20
comes in the river fills up with water you launch the boat you go fishing and then you got to come back before the
1:06:25
river drains out cuz the tide is now going away so you never fish the out really the outgoing tide you're always s
1:06:32
the high tide well apparently if you go out and get out there in time and then it all drains out and then you come back
1:06:38
after the incoming time it's a whole different fishery so it's going to be kind of cool I don't mean to interrupt that wonder that was very eloquent that
1:06:45
was a wonderful but I do have to interrupt this program to bring you a much anticipated bonus code I thought I
1:06:52
made a mistake or something for the latest fishing candidate giveaways uh this week the code is preview that's
1:06:59
preview p r v i w capital letters just
1:07:04
type that in the bonus code section of the contest and receive 100 I still can't believe we're giving away 100 free
1:07:11
entries for that but apparently we are um for those who aren't entered yet what
1:07:18
are you waiting for there's all kinds of goodies that we're giv away there I mean forget the fact that we've given away
1:07:24
boats Motors uh vacations we've right now it's all about Electronics there's
1:07:29
am I right Dean we got Electronics going on with this we have them up all year Garmin Garmin Electronics the good stuff
1:07:36
all there waiting for you so head on over to fishing canada.com uh while you're listen to the
1:07:42
rest of this episode and just click on com because apparently you can do that you can you can oh multitask multi I
1:07:48
like that and uh that like I don't either whenever I do that I either hang up on people or I lose the site that I
1:07:55
was on uh and sign up for all of the latest fishing Canada giveaways now back to the
1:08:02
episode boom wow come on now where were you well I think we were just finished our talking about our last uh our last
1:08:08
trip for the year yeah um Dean's got in the in the lineup here what the new gar
1:08:14
Garmin setup for this year so we are doing some different setups this year we're going to unveil like two or three
1:08:19
different little things that we're doing with with garment products that uh you will be very interested are going
1:08:25
release the Kraken yes we're going to so we're going to run normally we would run in the Garmin Force up until now we' run the
1:08:32
Garin Force trolling motor they make a Garin crack controlling motor that's much more conducive to the type of boat
1:08:38
that we're running the forest is really more of a bass boat low small you know load of the water boat this Kraken this
1:08:44
the minimum shaft length is 63 in then it goes from that to that and the ocean ones there like a 90 something inch uh
1:08:50
shaft on one of the ocean or the saltwater units it's unreal but um but apparently from what we've heard this
1:08:57
this trolling motor is outstanding and apparently the the anchor feature is is
1:09:02
like dead nuts on and one of the reasons for that is that motor uh uses reverse
1:09:09
instead of spinning the head around when you if you've seen a trolling motor now that's on an anchor lock it spins it goes crazy and all that kind of stuff
1:09:16
this one goes for reverse for reverse and just barely kicks to the side you know and with extreme accuracy so I
1:09:22
can't wait to use that thing and it's got you know it's over a 100 I think they've measured those things at 112 lb
1:09:27
thrust on 36 volts or something like that so there's a lot of power in that motor so uh but one of the really
1:09:33
interesting features of it is that you can now run your Liv scope uh Communication
1:09:38
cable right down inside the shaft of the trolling motor as opposed to it being
1:09:44
all over the place like like yeah all other Motors this is the only one uh in
1:09:49
the marketplace that will allow you to actually feed Liv scope cables through
1:09:54
the shaft down to the head because then there's a plugin down there that allows it to uh yeah it's essential in that
1:10:01
that type of motor it's without getting into it like crazy normal the the forest
1:10:07
trolling motor when you lift it up the whole motor comes up and just sort of lays on the top of your boat then you
1:10:12
drop it all in the whole motor comes like that these ones they slide through a sleeve and when you slide through a
1:10:17
sleeve you can't really run a cable up and down these the shafts of these motors properly you know without having
1:10:23
motor like an says cable hang hang so that's the key to running it in in the shaft of the motor it's going to be
1:10:28
great but we'll be running our transducers on a separate pole on the boat this year for the first time that's
1:10:34
something else multiple transducers as well so a lot of new things we're we're going to play around
1:10:39
like we said we're going to play around you'll you'll find out as we as we introduce these things on all of these
1:10:45
individual episodes our plan is to have the podcast from that location kind of
1:10:50
let you in on step one step two step three and show you our progression yeah
1:10:56
get a nice little technical aspect of the podcast too right that'd be cool yeah now I I I see Dean's got here
1:11:01
multiple camera boats for this year maybe maybe he can elaborate that on that for us yeah we have a new camera
1:11:09
because I I was not there for that meeting either it wasn't you were scratching your eyes like I got you in the ey
1:11:15
scratch what is how do you even do that I got you got to show me how you do that like that no it's upside down you like
1:11:22
you go over from there you go there you go that's it wow like you go like that
1:11:27
there you got to get over under the glasses right I I don't go under the glasses I go over the glasses right I'm always on the top of things you were
1:11:34
saying Dean sorry yeah we got a new camera so kind of in line with like the like being more behind the scenes we're
1:11:40
going to have another camera operator and it's going to be kind of picking up a little bit more of what like of what
1:11:47
goes on when we're out there while we're out there yeah yeah more more like the fly in thewall kind of approach and
1:11:53
that's going to be cool it'll be a cool Edition anyways a lot of new things coming up for the fishing Canada show
1:11:58
and consequently The Outdoor Journal podcast so uh that are it that's I got nothing
1:12:06
else to give I've given it all it's going to be the most exciting my opinion the most exciting season in our 40y year
1:12:13
39 year why do you say that what do you think what what your I just have a feeling you know we've got we got new
1:12:19
technology we're going to deploy we got new camera we're going to deploy we got we've got just some great ideas from all
1:12:26
the the the crew and and I just I'm excited man I am super pumped me too
1:12:31
it's going to be fun going to have those big dragon flies hang see that the big that's going to be the big difference for the audience they're going to see
1:12:37
that what the hell is going on with these guys so don't miss it don't miss a
1:12:43
single moment of it all coming up uh where you watch your fishing Canada show whether it's on global wfn uh any Canada
1:12:51
any of the above uh don't miss the new season and also don't miss a sing episode here on and you know what one of
1:12:57
the best ways to make sure you don't miss a podcast especially those coming up is to
1:13:03
subscribe because then it's guaranteed you will automatically get that episode
1:13:11
that is connected to each one of these fishing Canada episodes that we just talked about best way to do it is just
1:13:17
go and subscribe you stay up on it you're going to be you're going to be ahe of the game ahe of the curve an there you go there you go that are it
