BASS FISHING IN THE MUSKOKAS | The Fish'n Canada Show Episode 552: Port Cunnington Skins and Fins
Dec 2, 2024
A group of four enthusiastic individuals bid high in a charity auction in order to partake in a golf and fishing trip with our own Ang and Pete. They first hit a consistently ranked, Top 20 Canadian golf course, and then load up a couple of Princecrafts and hit the mighty Muskoka area for some early fall Smallmouth Bass.

One of Canada's longest-running fishing shows, Fish'n Canada travels from coast to coast in search of trophy fishing opportunities. First started by brothers Angelo and Reno Viola in 1986, The Fish’n Canada Show has been on the air for over 30 years. Today, Angelo is joined by lifelong fishing buddy, Peter Bowman, and the pair continue to travel across Canada educating anglers using the experience they’ve gained over the years

1:09
hi everyone and welcome to the fishing
1:10
Canada show if you're a regular viewer
1:13
you may recall an episode a little
1:15
earlier this season where Pete and I
1:16
attended a big fishing event shot in the
1:18
province of New Brunswick in that
1:21
episode we teamed up with Eric lindrose
1:23
and his Easter Seals hockey tournament
1:24
fundraiser and auction off not only that
1:26
new Bruns trip that an Mansion but as
1:29
well a trip to an awesome fishing and
1:31
golfing destination in the msca region
1:33
of Ontario and that's what today's show
1:35
is all about we weren't sure how a
1:38
second fishing package at the same
1:39
auction was going to do but much star
1:42
Delight it couldn't have gone better the
1:44
second trip went as quickly as the first
1:47
this package went to three men in the
1:49
Banking and Financial world and the good
1:52
lads that they are they included one of
1:54
their buddies to make it a
1:55
forcea now an and I are no brain
1:58
surgeons but we kind of figured that
1:59
Bankers would probably love golfing as
2:02
much as and maybe more than they did
2:04
fishing and we were right so the skins
2:07
and fins team of Scott Lawrence Brian
2:10
vasor Andrew LEF and their Bud Mike
2:13
Bourne was formed the location for this
2:15
trip could well be called picture
2:17
perfect it seemed tailor made for a
2:20
golfing and fishing combo our home base
2:22
is going to be the luxurious Port
2:24
cunnington Lodge on Lake of bay in the
2:26
Moka region of Ontario at Port
2:28
cunnington we have multitude of styles
2:31
of cottages so you can go as as small as
2:34
one bedroom like the chicky uh you can
2:36
do the hummingbird which is two-bedroom
2:38
Cottage um then you can move up to a
2:41
three-bedroom at the Basin of where the
2:43
lodge is we wrap around 18 Acres Around
2:46
The Waters Edge so we provide docking
2:49
which is nice I think the fishing's good
2:51
a smallmouth bass large mouth bass
2:53
there's there's trout I think you can
2:55
get white fish in this area as well we
2:57
typically open the Wednesday before for
3:00
Victoria Day weekend May 21st and we go
3:03
to Thanksgiving
3:04
weekend the golfing portion will take
3:07
place at the exclusive big wi Island
3:09
golf club which is smack dab in the
3:12
middle of a stunning Island on the same
3:14
body of
3:15
water so here's how this show is going
3:18
to play out since ANS and I feel we're
3:20
slightly better at fishing than golfing
3:22
we're going to let the boys go out and
3:24
put 18 holes under their belts while an
3:26
and I hit the leg to try and locate some
3:27
fish as an FYI we've never been on Lake
3:31
of bay before and we've only got one day
3:33
to figure things out big win Island Golf
3:36
Club a Doug Carrick design track is
3:39
consistently ranked as a top 20 course
3:41
in all of Canada as the name implies
3:44
it's situated on a beautiful 520 acre
3:47
Island surrounded by pristine
3:50
Waterfront and as an and I figured these
3:52
Banker boys are quickly feeling right at
3:54
home on this challenging
3:56
[Music]
3:58
course
4:01
I'm about as amateur as you can get in
4:03
the Gulf uh but uh listen bigwin uh is a
4:07
place I've heard about for years uh and
4:10
it's certainly lived up to its
4:11
reputation I mean absolutely perfect uh
4:15
course beautiful conditions and honestly
4:18
postcard type shots uh of the course so
4:22
just absolutely
4:24
[Music]
4:28
beautiful
4:30
it's a really well-designed course with
4:32
some very interesting features and when
4:35
you leave you you definitely can't wait
4:37
to come back and not all golf courses
4:40
leave you feeling that
4:41
[Music]
4:43
way that was my first time playing and
4:46
I've played a lot of courses in Ontario
4:48
so to have the ability to access that
4:51
was fantastic and it totally lived up to
4:53
its reputation we thought it was really
4:55
really great maintenance was topnotch as
4:57
well I think it was the hospitality that
4:59
was really that was really
5:03
awesome oh
5:06
[Music]
5:24
yeah got
5:27
him woo
5:32
r hand good right
5:34
[Music]
5:38
that's as the boys do their best to
5:40
break par Pete and I as we said earlier
5:43
are out scouting around for this we're
5:46
using our newest Princecraft boat
5:48
however since there will be four more
5:50
bodies fishing with us tomorrow along
5:52
with our technical crew we brought good
5:54
old fnc1 to the party as well for our
5:57
scouting Mission we're simply looking
5:59
for some easy picking small moou or
6:01
whatever else will bite the species
6:03
doesn't matter to us and our guests
6:05
they're good with anything this is where
6:07
good mapping and fish finding
6:09
Electronics come into play when you have
6:11
a short time to work they can be
6:13
indispensable Ying buddy okay now we see
6:17
if it's a small mouth y right there I
6:19
told you yes it's a small mouth all
6:20
right that's all we need to know it's
6:22
the color right there you
6:24
need you know as a matter of fact if
6:26
it's any game fish but it'd be better
6:28
for small M there may be more
6:30
predictable right was a walleye if it
6:32
was a pike as long as the boys get some
6:34
yeah but smallies I think is what uh
6:36
what we we'll get numbers of them right
6:37
yeah what we're aiming for you there you
6:41
go nice that's a nice fish too you know
6:43
if we can get an average of that I think
6:47
everybody will be happy yeah for sure so
6:50
we're on H Lake of bays and we're doing
6:52
something a little bit different this
6:54
week uh yeah we're fishing for the
6:57
fishing Canada show but right now we're
6:59
scouting we're scouting areas because
7:01
we've got uh four gentlemen that'll be
7:04
joining us tomorrow and they're golfing
7:06
it they have the privilege of golfing it
7:08
and tomorrow they're going to be fishing
7:09
smallmouth bass obviously with us we've
7:12
never been on the lake n neither one of
7:14
us no sir and we thought we'd take a day
7:16
or two prior to uh being joined by our
7:19
guests to see if we could put something
7:21
together because we want them to get
7:23
into fish only two of the guests
7:26
actually fish on a serious note the two
7:30
either don't fish at all or have
7:32
marginal fishing experience which will
7:34
make an interesting Dynamics for us
7:36
because we'll have both fishing Canada
7:38
boats out tomorrow um two two guests on
7:42
one and two on the other so it'll be
7:43
kind of an interesting uh setup for sure
7:46
this is kind of a typical would you say
7:48
a Moka area lake lake trout lake so it's
7:51
got a lot of deep water it doesn't have
7:53
a lot of structure that we can find so
7:55
far we I think we have to remap it
7:57
almost the whole lake well we don't have
7:58
time for that so we look for obvious
8:00
spot so this right here this is
8:01
interesting it's like it's a a Narrows
8:03
area so any Lake that you fish if you're
8:05
fishing if you're looking for fish a
8:06
Narrows area is a good place to start so
8:08
we got a marker buoy here marker bu on
8:10
the other side and two big points that
8:11
come out it's a classic piece of
8:13
structure you know what I mean and so we
8:14
just came over here we ran the garments
8:16
saw some fish we said hopefully they're
8:18
small mouth and it didn't take long and
8:19
by the way right now you're looking to
8:22
the east this is a straight East Wind
8:24
down here so normally that's bad but in
8:26
a Narrows area like this it can become
8:28
good cuz it creates current and the
8:30
other thing about it it's been an East
8:31
Wind for about 3 or 4 days so the fish
8:32
are starting to get used to it that
8:33
first day of the East Wind might not be
8:35
so good but now and it's going to stay
8:36
another East Wind for two more days with
8:37
the
8:38
[Music]
8:42
boys so as you saw the boys had an
8:44
outstanding round of golf on a
8:46
worldclass course but soon after all the
8:49
bragging was done their minds turned to
8:51
fishing and man were they gungho since
8:55
an and I came up with only two decent
8:57
SMY spots a game plan is Extreme
8:59
extremely easy to put together we'll hit
9:01
the furthest area first and then work
9:03
our way back towards the
9:04
lodge the first area was about a 20ft
9:07
deep soft bottom flat we know the fish
9:09
are there we just got to catch them
9:12
scooter holy sh that's a thick fish wow
9:16
buddy it's nice and easy nice and easy
9:18
nice and
9:19
[Music]
9:20
easy nice and easy a Bo bring back no
9:23
you got to just bring him back this way
9:24
a little
9:26
bit oh c w oh no
9:29
man down back up got
9:37
him that's like a four pounder it's a
9:40
nice one
9:41
boys almost almost died in the
9:44
process hey nice nice job partner woo I
9:48
got excited on that one picture time for
9:51
sure bike that was it set your stick
9:54
down yeah show that camera right there
9:56
buddy woo Here It Go Scott
9:59
nice all right perfectly done buddy now
10:02
you get to release it all right that's a
10:05
nice fish bro that's a beauty big
10:11
brownie sry wet hands got right that's
10:15
[Music]
10:16
good although that didn't exactly go
10:19
according to plan regarding numbers of
10:21
fish Scotty did catch a beauty of a smly
10:24
to keep all the boys pumped up to be
10:27
honest though this was supposed to be
10:29
our number one spot so far the fish gods
10:32
are coughing up lemons time to head over
10:35
to spot B and make some lemonade we
10:39
[Music]
10:40
hope so I was a little intimidated by
10:43
the whole thing obviously uh the the
10:46
group The Fishing Canada guys made us
10:49
feel so welcome that definitely set off
10:51
a great tone to start actually it was
10:54
educational for me to learn that much
10:56
about fishing and has has to be honest
10:58
lit a little bit of a fire in
11:00
me oh it's
11:07
AIS the fishing is really really
11:13
[Music]
11:22
good this is a bottleneck area that we
11:25
saw a few fish in yesterday two big
11:28
points that jet out into deep water
11:31
we'll all start out on the same side and
11:33
work from there let's keep our fingers
11:36
crossed and hope for the
11:38
best how
11:41
much well I'm pretty weak oh wow white
11:45
fish white fish Whitey look at that go
11:49
ahead oh try it but how on the guil or
11:52
no not on the you want to hold his body
11:54
somehow but you see all the Slime y
11:57
he'll just
12:00
look at the slime on it oh my
12:03
God the
12:09
camera
12:11
[Music]
12:14
nice so during this outing both an and I
12:16
had an eyeopener as to just how powerful
12:18
or maybe fulfilling the sport of fishing
12:20
is without us knowing Brian one of the
12:23
guys in my rig started the day out with
12:25
no indication as to any issues he could
12:27
or would encounter on my boat
12:29
he didn't look for any special attention
12:31
or treatment he just wanted to fish his
12:34
story well it's pretty
12:37
incredible for me having having uh being
12:40
visually impaired and and sort of being
12:41
legally blind from my early teens you
12:44
know I've had a long time to adjust
12:45
through life and life skills and working
12:47
and everything like that I grew up
12:48
fishing with my grandfather in
12:50
Northwestern Ontario and um you know
12:52
that was a great experience and for me
12:55
fishing wasn't just about catching fish
12:56
it was about you know the experience of
12:58
being out and being with the people
12:59
you're with my tactile senses have
13:01
become a lot a lot more sensitive and I
13:03
rely on them a lot more so I found in
13:05
fishing especially this the type of
13:07
fishing we were doing with that uh drop
13:09
shot fishing um understanding you know
13:12
it was educational experience for me for
13:13
sure uh understanding so I would kind of
13:16
visualize you know my line going into
13:18
the water being told you know keep the
13:21
weight on the bottom so the the lures um
13:24
H so I visualized that you guys got the
13:26
fish finders and everything like that I
13:27
have to go in there and get fish and you
13:30
know having uh being fully cited or
13:32
visually impaired in that it it's a
13:33
great sport for for people who uh
13:35
challenge yourself or just have fun in a
13:37
different ways so I I absolutely loved
13:39
[Music]
13:43
it boy BR okay get him in the net the
13:46
jumper this a little better maybe nice
13:50
that's a nice fish nice to be done
13:54
buddy SC that to the camera you can not
13:58
help to catch fish when you're with
14:00
these guys
14:02
man
14:07
[Music]
14:13
[Music]
14:20
[Applause]
14:21
[Music]
14:27
good
14:29
[Music]
14:32
yeah
14:37
[Music]
14:39
baby
14:43
[Music]
14:45
wow just lift up on the rod yeah and
14:48
then reel a little bit in at a time but
14:50
let your Rod spring them in nice fish
14:52
there's another one underneath it too do
14:53
you guys see that second fish he's
14:55
coming
14:56
up
14:57
who oh get in here there we go baby nice
15:01
work oh that's
15:03
[Music]
15:08
nice looks like an is hogging the prime
15:11
real estate no surprise there so I'm
15:13
going to mot her over to the opposite
15:15
side it's a point very much like the one
15:17
ANS and the boys are working a nice
15:19
Sandy flat that drops off into a deeper
15:21
Channel and just like the other side
15:24
it's loaded with smalles good job little
15:27
fell
15:32
that's a nice fish too it's a good
15:35
one easy mango this one yeah
15:39
little easy you're
15:44
[Music]
15:52
[Applause]
15:54
[Music]
15:56
going I like I like he not jumping cuz
15:59
that's usually when oh no it's usually
16:02
when they spin it
16:04
out nice nice work beautiful Bud thank
16:08
you oh great wow right at the top where
16:11
he should be that's the nice thing about
16:13
drop shoting they generally get pinned
16:14
right in the nose that's perfect he's
16:17
not as big as I thought but that's a
16:19
nice small that's a beauty isn't that
16:21
beautiful with the sun glistening office
16:23
magnificent

16:34
this Hotpot is a narrowed down area on
16:36
Lake of bays in the Mula region of
16:38
Ontario the way point on your screen
16:40
will put you right on it this is an easy
16:42
one to find as there's a red Channel
16:44
buoy directly adjacent to it the unique
16:47
part of this hotspot is the big
16:49
extending sand and rock point that juts
16:51
out from Shore and then plummets in the
16:53
deep water this is an ideal area for
16:56
Smallmouth bass as well as an array of
16:58
other game and Bait fish bottom
17:00
contacting baits like drop shot rigs
17:02
tube Jigs and Ned rigs are made for
17:04
spots like this they'll catch fish all
17:06
day long however if you plan to be there
17:09
at Sun up throw some top water baits on
17:11
top of the point and work them out to
17:12
the drop off the bonus to this Hots spot
17:15
if you go directly across to the other
17:18
side of the channel the green boy is
17:19
marking an almost exact replica both
17:22
areas produce fish for us for more

17:57

18:00
bring them up let me do
18:02
the
18:06
yeah
18:08
mother that is nice that's that right
18:12
there is worth the whole trip boys let
18:14
me tell you right now look at the belly
18:16
on this thing get a good grip get a good
18:18
grip oh yeah
18:22
baby good
18:25
stuff that is worth the price some
18:28
admission I'm telling you right now nice
18:31
job so Mike has done something a little
18:34
different good work he's done something
18:37
a little different we we've been
18:38
catching fish right off of this little
18:40
break that we found and it's loaded with
18:43
fish and we've caught fish after fish
18:45
after fish but now they've died down the
18:47
bite is off and I noticed Mike was
18:50
casting out a little bit farther into
18:52
the channel and and dragging it back I'm
18:55
assuming those are suspended fish that
18:57
you're getting right and all of a sudden
18:59
boom bigger fish better quality and uh
19:02
the bite's back on let's
19:09
go coming into this knowing that we were
19:12
going to be in the presence of greatness
19:15
and I when I say greatness I'm talking
19:17
about the fishing candidate team who put
19:18
their heart and soul and passion and
19:21
everything they do into fishing uh and
19:24
presenting it to people I knew that
19:27
there's no better opportunity that could
19:30
present itself to an angler or non-
19:31
angler to absorb and sponge and and
19:35
observe as much as possible and I'm
19:38
passionate about fishing so I was
19:39
excited about stealing any tips and any
19:42
special ideas from you guys to take it
19:43
back and use it on my own and I learned
19:45
a ton looking good looking real
19:50
good easy
19:52
does hey does
19:57
it now he's not as big I don't want to
19:59
disappoint you but he's not as big as
20:01
the last
20:02
[Applause]
20:06
one the hook Jump Right In The Net nice
