One of Canada's longest-running fishing shows, Fish'n Canada travels from coast to coast in search of trophy fishing opportunities. First started by brothers Angelo and Reno Viola in 1986, The Fish’n Canada Show has been on the air for over 30 years. Today, Angelo is joined by lifelong fishing buddy, Peter Bowman, and the pair continue to travel across Canada educating anglers using the experience they’ve gained over the years

escaping from the big city was once a
0:36
costly Endeavor for Anglers some of us
0:39
still travel thousands of miles to catch
0:41
the big one but more and more fishermen
0:43
are discovering their local resources
0:45
every year thanks to Ministry Research
0:48
cleanup and restocking programs trophy
0:51
salmon tro bass and even northern pike
0:55
can be caught within the limits of
0:56
Metropolitan Toronto local streams par
1:00
and marshlands once void of gamefish are
1:03
now
1:05
revitalized thousands of adult Pacific
1:07
salmon Ascend this River each fall and
1:10
this will be the final phase of their
1:12
life cycle spawning a new generation
1:16
only to perish soon
1:17
afterwards fishing with us today our Pro

staff member Randy

1:25
Jennings and Angelo Biola host of the
1:29
fishing Canada
1:32
show morning welcome to fishing Canada
1:34
today I've got uh the pleasure of
1:37
fishing with Randy Jennings out on the
1:39
credit River in um Southern Ontario I
1:42
guess Oakville will be the closest Miss
1:44
kind between and you just wouldn't
1:47
believe what's going on in this stretch
1:48
of river there are fish everywhere just
1:52
everywhere mind you we haven't hooked
1:53
one yet but uh like I was telling you
1:55
earlier an they they do a lot of their
1:57
traveling at night and early morning and
1:59
that's what they're doing right now
2:00
they're not resting they're traveling
2:02
they're moving up and if if you folks
2:03
could see what's in front of us right
2:05
now they're just fish just flying
2:06
through here like it's like morning rush
2:08
hour in the river is what it's like few
2:11
other Anglers out here today too is this
2:13
where we get a lot of pressure Randy oh
2:14
extreme amounts does extreme amounts
2:17
yeah uh probably the worst poached River
2:20
I've I've ever fished as far as as far
2:22
as snagging and uh yeah poaching it's
2:24
one of the worst unfortunately the river
2:27
lens itself that I had it's a fairly
2:28
shallow uh slow running River you can
2:31
see the fish mhm and whenever that
2:34
happens it lends itself to uh to as you
2:36
call it poing plus it's right next to a
2:38
nucleus of 2.6 million people so you get
2:41
the cream of the
2:43
crop but uh it's just loaded with fish
2:46
oh yeah this is probably one of the the
2:48
the widest longest rivers that these
2:50
fish run into in Southern Ontario yes
2:51
this this is actually a perfect example
2:53
of a like a classic BC type River it
2:56
hasn't got this current speed and the
2:57
depth and but it's about as close as we
3:00
got in Southern Ontario anyway
3:03
uhhuh it is something else yeah they're
3:05
all just lined up at the front of this
3:07
pool this is like they're waiting in
3:08
line to get on the Subway or something
3:10
yeah exactly now later on in the day
3:12
these fish will settle back in the
3:14
middle of the pool yeah and uh try and
3:17
get in behind little pockets and edes
3:18
and just sit there for the rest of the
3:20
day until Nightfall and then start
3:21
moving again yeah that's when it's
3:23
safest for them oddly enough they're the
3:25
they're the top of their food chain in
3:26
the lake and
3:28
uh fish there you go I didn't think it
3:31
would take you long that's a good
3:34
fish
3:36
yeah jeez I float wasn't in the water
3:38
too long a Big M just shaking just a
3:42
shaking just a shaking it's it's really
3:45
surprising that the amount of fish and
3:46
how hard you have to work for them to
3:48
get them to hit you know that's a good
3:50
14 15 lb fish isn't it oh yeah he's he's
3:53
kind of old yeah now that fish has been
3:56
in in the system for for a while I would
3:58
think it's a fairly dark fish that's
3:59
lost its uh resilience that nice bright
4:02
silvery color that they have when they
4:04
first come in yeah there are still some
4:06
silver fish this year we haven't had
4:08
much rain and it's really attributed to
4:10
like a split run uh and we're really
4:12
hoping for some rain to get a lot of
4:13
fish from Downstream up so there's still
4:16
a lot of fish down there to come up huh
4:17
oh yeah I think he's got pretty good
4:19
control over there R yeah well you can't
4:22
horse that fish obviously CU of the
4:24
light equipment that we're using yeah
4:26
this is actually only the second mail
4:27
out of three trips that I've hit this
4:29
year is that right yeah all the rest
4:30
have been females I've noticed
4:32
traditionally do come in later on do
4:34
they not the males yeah it seems that
4:36
way in this River anyway um this River's
4:40
got it gets the biggest run but it gets
4:41
the most stockings you know it gets the
4:43
most amount of fish put in it MH
4:47
so on this guy what's that look at the
4:49
kipe on he almost looks like he's half
4:51
bird yeah yeah they really develop that
4:54
that lower and upper Bill don't they oh
4:56
yeah but this is what they go they
4:58
undergo and they're spawning
5:00
trip and these fish die after they're
5:01
finished that's what I was going to say
5:03
unfortunately some of the carcasses are
5:04
lying in the river here do remind us of
5:06
the fact that these fish um come up here
5:08
and once they're finished their spawning
5:10
cycle they do die
5:12
mhm look at the kipe on that fish yeah W
5:17
he's starting to realize now that
5:19
there's something wrong he's I'm only
5:20
using six PB
5:22
and look at
5:24
that I'm not even going to help you with
5:26
that
5:27
Randy I just trying to get his tail
5:29
around so I can grab
5:32
them you want me to uh try and get them
5:34
for you I'll get or one of your
5:39
gloves those teeth as a matter of fact I
5:42
better stand back and does pop it those
5:44
teeth will cut mine or they will yeah
5:46
and you've got to sometimes like I'm
5:48
horsing this guy an awful lot I
5:49
shouldn't be but uh you should you
5:51
should take it easy with them as long as
5:52
you got the hook in them they won't get
5:54
off um the only way that they get off is
5:57
a break off uhhuh and fell hook them too
6:05
much here I'll get that hook out for you
6:07
let's have a look at this mouth look at
6:10
that isn't that
6:12
wild y you're right those that looks
6:15
like a dog yeah that is actually some
6:18
species of salmon in BC they call a dog
6:20
do salmon which is I think they also
6:22
call chum salmon look at
6:24
this yeah that's from the teeth isn't
6:27
that amazing oh that's that's one that's
6:28
broken off in there oh yeah that's not
6:30
even your hook where's mine it's on the
6:32
other side isn't that wild now we just
6:36
pulled another hook out of that fish I
6:37
thought it was ry's but obviously I was
6:39
he encountered another angler and uh
6:42
probably earlier on and he's broke him
6:44
off probably when he was a fresher fish
6:46
into the river and he had more fight in
6:47
them yeah that Hook's been in them for a
6:49
while cuz that's right in that bone that
6:50
jaw bone right through the other side
6:52
again see yeah it'll just bend the hook
6:53
anyway yeah there it is but he has got a
6:57
set of Jaws on him and a set of teeth
6:59
just like a dog yeah it's
7:03
incredible just incredible look at that
7:07
it's unfortunate a fish has to die but
7:09
yeah it seems it seems almost worthless
7:12
to some people letting them go but let's
7:14
keep in mind that this fish is going to
7:16
complete his spawning cycle in his life
7:19
so this is the way he was meant to it's
7:21
kind of fitting to let him go back up
7:22
yeah it's not he wasn't meant to finish
7:24
his life on the bank so let's put him
7:26
back in and see if we can go find a h
7:28
and get married for there he
7:31
[Music]
7:35
goes drift fishing spawn sax is a proven
7:38
tactic here for both salmon and TR a
7:40
pencil float rig provides you with the
7:42
finest presentation and the least amount
7:44
of Hang-Ups tricking one of these
7:46
monsters into striking and Landing them
7:47
on light tackle is truly a rewarding
7:49
experience Angela and I noticed a number
7:52
of people snagging that day there are no
7:54
rewards involved in poaching only a lack
7:56
of understanding of true sport fishing
7:59
give you good line control and
8:00
everything but when that line gets
8:02
Tangled around your Rod to that's a long
8:03
walk you wish you had a 5ot ultral light
8:06
but they do give you better control I
8:07
can keep my line off the water I
8:09
mentioned 5ft ultral light but
8:11
Randy when I used to fish the streams on
8:14
a serious note and I'm going
8:17
back oh good 10 12 maybe 14 years ago
8:21
that's exactly what I fish with was a
8:22
little ultr light 5T ultra light rod and
8:27
of course we weren't fishing for uh gig
8:29
itic salmon or steel head or or 12 lb or
8:32
14lb Browns you're stream fish we're
8:34
stream fishing for for Native trout like
8:37
the Brooks and the Browns in it but
8:40
since this um this fishery is taken off
8:43
it's changed the whole composition of
8:45
the rivers of the Creeks it's changed uh
8:48
the native fish that that used to be
8:50
there the little 2B brookies and Browns
8:51
have changed it's really changed a lot
8:53
of things oh these these fish uh Drive
8:56
Browns and specs right off their
8:57
spawning grounds they drive them off do
8:58
they cuz they
9:00
a lot of people don't realize it but
9:01
stream Browns and specs spawn in the
9:02
fall they don't spawn in the spring like
9:04
their uh like their uh rainbows do and
9:08
uh these fish get up in the headwaters
9:09
uhuh and they dig Nest the size of the
9:13
size of a brook Trout's pool that he
9:14
lives in yeah and they can't compete and
9:17
what happens is gradually the headwaters
9:19
start uh deteriorating and uh they just
9:22
can't compete uh especially even the
9:25
credit River here the headwaters In this
9:27
River holds beautiful brown brown and
9:29
Brook trro native populations so what's
9:31
happening are those fish being driven
9:32
further up the system like the the small
9:35
native fish they're not necessarily
9:37
dying or anything they're just they're
9:38
being moved yeah there's a fish got one
9:41
oh there was a fish you notice when I
9:44
set the hook and I drive my rod forward
9:46
like that it's so that I don't catch the
9:47
beautiful trees behind
9:49
me well time for another row bag well
9:53
while you got one out make sure you you
9:55
leave one out for me too
10:03
now that's that's an interesting uh
10:06
thing too you know you mentioned row bag
10:07
and maybe we should just mention what we
10:09
are using today um but back when I used
10:13
to fish the streams of course the old
10:15
Garden Hackle was the way to catch fish
10:18
mhm and uh you would never dream of
10:21
using row which is Spawn from the fish
10:23
obviously MH well um these fish are
10:27
prone to worms believe it or not oh I
10:29
believe I us to catch at the at the
10:31
beginning of of this
10:33
whole salmon and steel had run into our
10:36
into our Rivers I mean I had I spent a
10:39
couple of years right at the
10:41
initial uh the initial runs when they
10:43
were first being introduced and I used
10:46
to catch my fair share there's
10:48
one I think he was waiting with his
10:50
mouth open right now I didn't even set
10:51
the hook on him I was trying to hand you
10:53
your roll bag in the FL don't get too
10:54
excited now
10:56
readyy hold on to that roll bag for me
10:58
will while I tie on this
11:01
thanks is that a little better you know
11:03
it's just shocking is what it is I I was
11:06
I wasn't paying any attention and like I
11:08
say you know and they just come they
11:10
turn on so fast in the morning uhhuh now
11:13
this guy is going to go that one's going
11:14
to take you for a little walk oh J look
11:15
at the colors on this fish an I can't
11:17
get over the number of fish out here
11:19
just incredible the credit River is
11:21
located just west of Toronto in Miss
11:23
Saga
11:24
Ontario early runs of salmon begin in
11:27
September and existing runs have been
11:29
reported as late as March during these
11:31
migrations stream angling is allowed
11:32
from Dundas Street North to burnhamthorp
11:34
Road areas south of Dundas and north of
11:37
burnhamthorp are designated sanctuaries
11:39
where fishing is not
11:41
[Music]
11:52
allowed almost watch your line around
11:56
mine now that's a nice fresh fish he
11:59
fought pretty good now he's got that big
12:01
kpe on him too with those big teeth he
12:04
just drove that road bag right up the
12:05
line little fire you'll have to grip
12:07
really hard without a glove on them
12:10
yeah Jesus all all I can do is just to
12:12
hold them there just to hold them there
12:14
aren't they powerful fish imagine if
12:17
large moou grew this big anend oh you'd
12:19
be in heaven you'd be in heaven well
12:21
they do grow this big but not a lot of
12:23
them not where we come from they don't I
12:26
don't know where you've been fishing for
12:28
no I I I'm afraid to say I'm I'm just a
12:31
budding Largemouth fisherman that is a
12:33
nice salmon now what would that go I'd
12:36
say he's around 20 just got to be around
12:38
20 like this we take this for granted
12:40
but this is fantastic this is
12:42
unbelievable fishing you know we're
12:44
talking 20b fish on six lb test line in
12:47
a fairly fast moving
12:49
current I want to tell you he's 20
12:52
anyway oh
12:54
yeah isn't that something come on Randy
12:57
I just felt a frayo out of my reel I oh
12:59
no I just felt it go through the guides
13:01
and somewhere halfway through my you
13:03
better hope you get it in before that
13:04
fish breaks you out look at the moving
13:06
around here it's
13:10
incredible how' you I take that fish
13:12
Downstream a little bit so I can uh oh
13:13
he's down enough you can dri okay I'll
13:15
let you know if he com let me know if he
13:16
comes
13:21
up see if we can get a double header R
13:23
how do we handle a double header in this
13:25
situation uh it's difficult it usually
13:28
results in nothing nothing nothing at
13:30
all nothing nothing yeah oh yeah he's a
13:33
good siiz fish
13:36
yeah well it looks like Angelo's
13:39
statement invited itself to the salmon
13:41
two fish of this size and character
13:43
fighting in the same river could prove
13:45
challenging if not
13:47
impossible good luck fellas you'll sure
13:50
need
13:55
it man oh man
14:02
I got to get some of this line back here
14:05
[Music]
14:05
[Applause]
14:13
[Music]
14:13
[Applause]
14:16
[Music]
14:32
oh well it looked like Angelo did have a
14:34
chance for a minute there but let's see
14:37
how Randy is
14:38
doing I just don't want him to go into
14:40
that tree and I can't get too far below
14:42
him cuz it's a little
14:44
deep
14:46
oh now come on Randy you should had that
14:48
F landed already there's nothing I can
14:51
do about it I guess I should be the last
14:53
one giving Randy advice these fish are
14:55
unbelievably strong Fighters and seem to
14:57
have a NeverEnding source of energy long
15:00
runs like this one are a common
15:01
occurrence here on the credit River due
15:03
to the layout of the flow it's one of
15:05
the widest rivers in Ontario therefore
15:07
it's extremely difficult to work the
15:08
fish in a slow moving pool because it
15:10
seems that there's fast flowing pieces
15:12
of water everywhere on this stretch and
15:14
the salmon really use them to their
15:16
advantage
15:18
[Music]
15:31
[Laughter]
15:32
[Music]
15:41
like Randy said a double header usually
15:44
ends with no fish better luck next time
15:49
fellas you know what I did I took uh
15:52
probably 20 or 30 yards off mine I might
15:54
have to and uh I might have to that fish
15:58
like there was no control on that fish
16:01
whatsoever talking about control yeah I
16:04
guess you experienced of that I I was
16:06
100 yards down and I got him right up
16:09
close to Shore and I just felt this
16:11
little I thought you had him when you
16:13
were in the middle there yeah he broke
16:14
off just well the fish that I lost he he
16:16
got off right up there I mean he had y I
16:19
saw you walking back and he had a good
16:22
100 yards on Me Mine literally busted me
16:23
right off
16:29
the angling fanatic can now experience
16:31
trophy fishing 5 minutes from his
16:33
downtown home without any involved
16:35
complex planning of course nothing can
16:38
match our great unspoiled Wilderness
16:39
areas but the convenience of fishing
16:42
after work is now a reality we can all
16:44
enjoy amongst the jungle of concrete
16:47
buildings and traffic lies this
16:49
beautiful setting a perfect example of a
16:52
revitalized urban stream flora and fauna
16:56
has been carefully preserved to enhance
16:58
the angle setting or merely provide one
17:01
with a pleasant day of hiking fishermen
17:03
enjoy catching bass trout and of course
17:06
the mighty Pacific salmon here these
17:09
species and more all coexist in a
17:12
peaceful Urban setting we know of as the
17:15
credit
17:19
River F oh rainbow I think in
17:25
[Music]
17:29
oh look at this bye Randy I don't want
17:33
to run down for any bye
17:38
Randy I'm running out of line Ed I'm
17:42
almost out of
17:45
line you better start
17:47
[Music]
17:55
running better start running Ry I'm out
17:58
of line
18:03
[Music]
18:08
Angelo and Randy caught and released 23
18:10
salmon today the average fight lasted 20
18:13
minutes and this final fish emptied
18:16
Randy's spool and in return gave him a
18:19
good excuse to call it a day you know
18:21
the thing that really uh is amazing
18:24
about this system is that it is so close
18:27
like you said earlier on today 2 6
18:29
million people in the area yeah and yet
18:32
when we go out on these trips out to the
18:34
West Coast the east coast and and
18:36
everywhere else fishing for the doing
18:37
programs for the show you don't get as
18:40
good a fishing assist no the local
18:42
fishing's really picked up a lot since
18:44
the you know what it was in the early
18:46
'70s to what it was in the late '70s and
18:47
now the ' 80s it's really picked up a
18:49
lot with stocking programs and this sort
18:51
of thing it's uh it's one heck of a way
18:54
to get out and have a real good time um
18:58
there this particular Creek the credit
19:00
River it's not a creek I guess we should
19:01
explain that uh it is probably the
19:03
biggest system in Southern Ontario as
19:05
far as uh River or creek goes yeah
19:08
you've got your credit Rivers one of the
19:09
largest flows one of the largest flows
19:12
and I understand there's some nice pools
19:13
way up the river too that we didn't
19:14
beautiful beautiful pools yeah beautiful
19:16
but you can fish this place for a week
19:18
and not and it's only a stretch from
19:20
Dundas to Burnham thur Street which is
19:22
opened and there's just endless places
19:25
to fish you got parking down here you've
19:26
got all the facilities you need oh yeah
19:28
and the amazing part about this type of
19:30
fishing is that it's successful to
19:32
everybody and it's really easy to do
19:34
there's a couple of things that you do
19:35
need some spawn sacks until you catch
19:37
your first fish with eggs in her and
19:40
once you get your first fish with eggs
19:41
in her then all you do is just tie it up
19:43
and netting that you can get at your
19:44
local uh tackle shop and then I guess we
19:47
had our one fish on a crank bait crank
19:50
crank baits will work small red
19:52
crankbait one thing we we've always
19:54
found though is you've got to try and
19:56
keep your bait whatever it is you're
19:58
using kind of above their heads don't
20:00
get it below them or out of their field
20:02
of view their field of view seems to be
20:03
best just above their head and if you
20:05
can get it right into that field of view
20:06
you're going to catch a lot of fish pair
20:08
of polarized glasses are a must for this
20:10
type of fish uh it's important like any
20:12
other type of fishing that you locate
20:14
the fish first I mean you might be
20:15
fishing one of these holes or these uh
20:18
troughs that hold no fish at all and you
20:19
can drift it all day long not get
20:21
anything so you want to wear a pair of
20:23
polarized sunglasses make sure the fish
20:24
are in that particular run that you're
20:26
fishing so listen go out and get
20:27
yourself a a noodle Rod a nice limp
20:29
eight or or 10t Rod some light line and
20:33
the floats like Randy mentioned some uh
20:35
some
20:36
spawn wait waiters are quite important
20:40
quite important you've got to be mobile
20:42
and even when the fish runs on you've
20:43
got to be able to get away I've noticed
20:45
a few guys today were fishing from Shore
20:47
but it's important that you do bring out
20:49
a pair of waiters not necessarily uh uh
20:53
chess waiters just a pair of hips would
20:55
be fine during yeah they're quite fine
20:57
great well Randy I've had pleasure yeah
20:59
let's back to the studio yeah let's go
21:01
stay tuned for more fishing
