1:01
destination for your Outdoor Adventures well hello everybody thank you for joining us another wonderful day another
1:07
wonderful episode and another wonderful uh co-host Mr Bowman well thank you you wonderful person well thank you no no I
1:14
saw you sign an autographs over there I like that no I was just making some notes finding I'm finding that I need
1:21
more notes now um this time goes on I need to remind myself of things that I
1:27
can forget reminders are a good thing they're a Gods send they're a blessing only if you know where you put the
1:33
reminders and you look in the reminder places he got a book and now there's the phones you can put them in there to yeah
1:39
you you got to kind of confine them to condense them to one if you can it's a book is that book your life no yeah
1:46
pretty much okay uh Chris Johnson of the Johnson brother Fame will
1:52
be joining us a little later on his brother Cory and him have been uh
1:57
burning up lating it up fishing business down south uh of the Border winning all
2:03
kinds of things uh Chris has the distinction of being the only Canadian to ever win angler of the Year give me a
2:10
hell yeah in the Elite Series and we yeah Elites yeah that's a big thing that's a huge thing for canadi boy it's
2:17
good for anybody in in the world but is it more difficult in your opinion to win angler of the year than it is to win say
2:24
the Bassmaster the classic which is coming up yeah the classic is coming up I'd say yeah I think so consistent
2:30
throughout the whole year versus consistent throughout one tournament right so I'd say yeah that that that
2:35
it's it's almost like that the the the crowned champion of the classic is the hero of the year but really you know
2:42
what I mean like that angler of the Year award that's that's huge really they talk about the classic Champion a lot
2:48
they don't talk about not as much yeah it's like a all all round I guess you'd call it but angler of the Year well
2:54
we're going to be talking about angry the year here in a few minutes with Chris Johnson of the Johnson
3:00
boys um but first Mr Bowman first and
3:05
foremost well we do have to shop. fishing canada.com fishing Canada store
3:10
did you notice sporting a new piece what is that what do you mean a new piece what is that well new to me oh it's a
3:18
full zip hoodie type thing with the pouches and I like the full zip you know
3:23
I do too I do like the full zip you know gives you options gives you exactly I like options it's uh one of many of the
3:30
wonderful garments by the way I don't know whether we ever mentioned that's a quarter zip is that what call that's a quarter zip quarter zip yeah you don't
3:36
have as many options as I do Nick commented me on the other day what you call me Nick when I had this on the
3:43
had you called me you called me the name I had it unzip there what' you call Ito
3:49
up Guido up they called me the guido Guido up with no disrespect to any guidos out
3:56
there watching exactly we like your guidos we love guidos yeah sir um where was I where was I going
4:04
with this well all the new stuff right there's a fix your lacer you got to cover over
4:09
your logo I don't want to cover the logo up somehow you got to either oh yeah I I'm not a big fan and you know on my
4:16
regular hoodie I just remove them no yeah I might remove them on there too yeah I might but it adds they're a nice
4:22
compliment in color they they do add that and that like if they have a black lace on it then you suggesting I don't
4:28
remove leave them just I'd leave them it's kind of nice it's kind of a khaki do white color and it looks good not
4:36
Kaka khaki which is a big difference okay all right obviously we have nothing
4:41
to talk to you about because we're talking about khaki now uh anyways go to fishing canada.com
4:48
uh find the store or you can go to shop uh uh what is it shopfishing canada.com
4:53
that's right and you too can there's all kinds of goodies there in terms of uh specials and buy this and get that and
5:01
this and that I too many for me to even talk about here yes so oh look at that
5:06
musky got there holy I know that's a beauty that is a beauty beauty isn't a word that's only around 50 lb and that
5:13
embroidery is absolutely stunning it looks pretty come now that's more of the stripe B musky and there versus the
5:20
spoted but still one of the three phases that's right I'm liking it I'm glad you like it I'm liking the this whole set
5:27
who did all this artwork he just Brant was Nick that was Nick oh Nick good job buddy just BR
5:33
nicely done he's not even listening to me he's playing with his mustache over there what the hell hello there Dino how
5:39
are you doing hello I'm good good come on now are we ready to go now Dean Taylor the the newest fishing Canada
5:47
host yeah let's let's talk about that thank you thank you for reminding me you're welcome my friend uh we're
5:53
alluding to the fact that Dino uh Dino's episode that he shot last year taking
5:59
over our job is what he's doing it's FR um aired it's the first time he has
6:04
actually shot a fishing Canada upod all on his own With No Parental Guidance whatsoever
6:13
and it aired last weekend I believe now when you're listen when you're watching this podcast it will have aired a few
6:20
weeks earlier so don't don't quote me on these times but uh anyways I I I wanted
6:25
to ask you about that how did it go you I've told you that you know watching all
6:30
this stuff in pre-production and during the production period And even during
6:36
the post-production uh perod is okay and you get a sense of it but until it goes
6:42
to television until you see it live on TV it's a whole different ball game isn't it yeah I mean I seen the show
6:48
probably 20 times just in pieces like doing all the editing and stuff uh but seeing it on TV I had some family over
6:55
we watched it like live I guess at 8800 in the morning yeah it was a crazy
7:01
experience to get up and watch that and see that on TV especially even just like watching the intro and everything and
7:06
then it goes to me is just felt so weird was really cool to see and he's got he's got God on his site too and I'll tell
7:12
you why because so far this year what is that episode six five in our lineup six
7:18
in our lineup so far this year I've had full intent on watching our brand new episodes and I just for some reason I'm
7:24
not I maybe I slept a little later and ate I did something I'm doing something looking then for for some reason I'm
7:30
sitting there Saturday morning Dean's episodes and I'm thinking oh look at that I could do I watched his entire
7:35
it's the only one I've watched entirely live on camera is Dean he's got something going on there subliminal
7:40
messaging or something going on anyways congratulations uh great job looked fantastic uh something to be real proud
7:47
of thank you I appreciate that yeah it was good it was really good we got some good feedback I've had buddies that said hey that guy's good so wow Chris hawkley
7:54
sent us that wonderful letter you didn't see that no I did not are you hiding it
8:00
on us I I think it might be one of the nicest uh industry letters that I've
8:07
ever received get the hell out here I'll share it with you at a later date was that a text message text message yeah
8:13
I'll share it with you at a later date it was uh it was moving to wow and I thank you Chris of you're watching this
8:20
he does I think I think so too yeah oh he does watch these podcasts yeah hi Chris hi Chris uh listener
8:27
feedback uh comes to us at G Gus g g I'll bet you
8:36
g893 born in 1993 I'll bet you so how do you know all this stuff Greg Yates 1993
8:43
is a guess that's a guess Gus Gus Yates I'm guessing Yates but it could be Gus
8:48
could be Gus for sure Gus Yates Jerry with a G Jerry with a G Jerry yeah uh G
8:57
g893 via YouTube in response to episode 155 holy crap titled how to make a
9:05
fishing show we just released that not that long ago didn't I I don't know no idea recorded it that not that long ago
9:11
g893 goes on to say great podcast I've been watching your show since I was a kid and love it I'm sure a huge amount
9:21
of work goes into each episode editing a week-long trip into a 20-minute TV
9:27
episode and a lot of great footage ends up being cut by necessity in order to
9:34
make time have you ever is this question now have you ever considered doing long
9:39
format episodes for YouTube uh with more discussion tips tricks Etc uh similar to
9:48
new fly Fisher I didn't know new fly Fisher oh yeah they do they have some great long episodes like hour long hour
9:55
plus long on their YouTube yeah yeah they do wow I'll have to check them out and how are they they're good good you
10:02
know it's just you know exactly what they be about because it's the stuff that we throw away cuz he's exactly right we have so much footage that we
10:08
just put into the archive they're on a drive in here right now and then you might see the late light of day one time
10:14
again or might not so um so why aren't we doing that why is anybody well I
10:19
think it's probably the just the production cycle you know what I mean we're just finish up like we were very
10:25
busy at this moment finishing our last couple of shows of the year yeah um extremely busy and then we're trying to
10:31
prep for again next year so I mean if we could either put a new team on doing
10:36
something like that that's what we need we need more employees team right volunteers oh volunteers volunteer work
10:44
yes kind of like the elections right volunteers exactly okay well the Big Show doing this for us I would like to
10:49
suggest that we because volunteers you know it's hard to get good volunteers I'll be honest with you thank goodness
10:55
you're going through that right now right than goodness that there are people who volunte here but you know they volunteer and so it's hard to get
11:02
you know they're not always top quality folks but we appreciate each and everyone so I'm going to suggest now
11:08
that you brought this up I think our existing crew is fantastic they are all
11:13
right I think we ought to convert the existing crew which are fantastic into
11:19
volunteers oh because then we got great great skilled people and they're
11:27
volunteering right I think that's wonderful anybody else agree with me on that I think you'll do really well with
11:32
that with that system I think oh it's not we anymore we got to go and get a job to pay then we'll give you our
11:38
volunteer time so you'll do good but I mean yeah I think we ought to just convert everybody to volunteers it'll be
11:44
a good show uh so anyways getting back obviously you don't want to discuss that
11:50
so let's get back to uh g893 uh what he saying is is anybody
11:56
considered doing a long vers we've talked about it we've talked many times and it's just exactly that is the the
12:02
Manpower the effort because these these shows that 20 minute piece you're talking about yeah it's the best of the
12:08
best but it takes vula forever to go we got to log the footage then V's got to P
12:13
piece it together we write the script out and all that stuff all of a sudden he's got to do that twice or three times more you know what I mean so it's a long
12:20
process the edit and then of course Joe now we might might not for YouTube we may not have to put a a total online
12:25
process but we probably would now that it's on 4K right so a there's a ton of work to it so uh depending on and then
12:33
this guy right here he doesn't go half ass at anything okay I'm going to tell you that right now we did a half ass show he said and look at here's our full
12:39
format and WTF I think he's what his words would be you know he would just
12:45
say good boys get rid of that get rid of that and move on there a bunch of thank you doo thank
12:52
you I was running when that was going to come out of the closet so there a lot of work that's for sure so it'd be nice to
12:57
do now that you mention it and brought it to our attention we will definitely look uh at it and see if it's a
13:04
possibility maybe sometime during the offseason maybe we do a redo and uh uh
13:10
make it a longer version I do you do it as an experiment just do one one of and see I love experimenting yeah always
13:16
been a very experimenting kind of guy you have huh okay yeah love that what's your favorite experiment you've ever
13:22
tried can you recall oh you can't discuss it on this podcast
13:28
can you uh conservation Corner uh there is a
13:33
Sten year there is a stench in the air right
13:38
now I want to talk about that brought to you by the invasive species Center wants us to talk about
13:45
stench not the smell it is stench uh it is a fish uh that's invaded almost
13:52
apparently every corner of the planet aside from Antarctica which means it
13:58
doesn't like the severe cold obviously uh buty but it's okay every other part
14:03
of the world apparently a stench has now you stop with this stench thing I love
14:09
it I I know it's great you know we have stench is what we're talking about
14:15
uh but it does have a stench to it oh yeah anyways they are a mediumsized uh
14:22
deep bodied fish right there tiny scales tiny little scales rounded very cute
14:27
looking little animal they are actually but that's the problem right there with these invasive species a lot of times they're so cute oh well let's put them
14:34
in our aquariums that's the no you didn't it does look like an
14:39
aquarium fish sure if it was a teeny guy you know it was like had a little uh deep body fish with small scales Pete
14:45
just mentioned rounded fins and a uh single barble on each side of the mouth
14:50
these striking Olive colored fish were brought into Canada illegally in 1986
14:56
coincidentally that's the year the fishing Canada show started uh no connection there at all uh
15:05
where they then escaped and made their way uh into the St Lawrence River obviously that was the beginning of the
15:10
end although not established in the Great Lakes they have Gateway the portal to All Things invasive no kidding it
15:16
seems to be yeah wow uh they have since been spot I didn't mention that when we were talking about fishing canada.com
15:22
the portal the gateway to your next fishing Adventure come on now Justa thereof that's all uh tenen are highly
15:31
adaptable to new environments and compete with Native fishes like minnows uh Bullhead sucker and Waters where
15:37
they've invaded by eating significant amounts of snails insects and other
15:42
bethi benic Ben invertebrates did we find out did we find out what that is
15:48
means they live on the bottom oh that's they're bottom dwellers bottom dwellers bottom why don't we just put bottom
15:54
dweller on there yeah CU knows we're trying to sound smart exactly other bottom dwelling
16:03
invertebrates uh not only could they out compete native species for food but it's predicted that tench could decrease
16:11
water quality and increase the transmission of different parasites and diseases between other fishes in the
16:18
great lak so they also they're a vector one could say they're a vector they're a vector vector but the one of the
16:23
problems with all these invasive species is they're competing our native species for food that's a huge one yeah right I
16:28
mean as if there isn't enough there to go around now our fish need to be bigger but no no they less so what do you do in
16:37
a case like that well to learn more about the tench you would go to the invading species hotline or online at Ed
16:46
maps.com then you would uh help keep our waterways free of Invaders and you learn about the tench amongst other invasives
16:54
and how would anybody ever know to go like I don't really know the ins and
17:00
outs of Google searches but if I was going to go and search for I don't know
17:07
tench maybe or invasive species maybe or I certainly would not go to EDD
17:15
maps.com well what you would do is you you'd punch it in into a
17:21
window is it a window or they call it guys on your yeah window and CU you got multiple you probably get 500 windows
17:27
open in your phone you don't even know from past you know what I mean so this be a new you go okay I know I got that somewhere oh there t you hit that one
17:34
and there comes up hey that's the one because they put it in right now EDS Maps uh and it's in their it's in their
17:41
uh Ed Maps s Maps yeah they put it in there and they what is does anybody know what Ed
17:48
early detection and distribution mapping system I thought it was a guy named ed had bu Maps yeah I did too to be honest
17:54
with you you can have my maps for free so there you go so uh be VIs uh go and check it out see what this
18:01
little critter is all about it's called tench and uh it's all there on uh Ed
18:10
maps.com come on now come on now well that's stench of the tench good
18:15
one I like that inch the stench of the tench you're good you're good you're very creative carry on Mr Bowman I need
18:20
a break after that after tench oh in the news yes do the news check this out Walley warts oh my God spreading I don't
18:29
even know if I want to look at this picture but I have seen some Nast you don't want to look at holy that was from the that was the video that sparked
18:36
this uh that's as Extreme as I've ever seen cuz I've seen a lot of this not like that no I'm just saying that is
18:43
like not even close to that see that one on the bottom there that's what you see normally no over over this where yeah
18:49
that's normally you see them one two every now and then there that is and
18:54
that's all for sure Dean it is all the warts yeah so story I saw a guide an ice
19:00
fishing guide reported that he was catching these and they were getting worse and worse every year and then this
19:06
year this is the fish he caught so he called the ministry in good for and said there's something wrong here the
19:12
headline on fishing canada.com for the whole story is Walley wart spreading in
19:17
Manitoba and I believe this uh example was from gimle Manitoba it's called
19:24
dermal saroma and lymphocyst so good now I think uh spread
19:31
and they're spread once the fish gets it it's spread from fish to fish so if they contact each other then it comes through
19:36
contact it's a skin disease it's we've seen it we've seen it time and time man and I have seen it and Dean have seen it
19:42
time and time and time again on the Bay of quiny it's it was really prominent
19:48
about five years ago four five six years ago it seems to be subsiding now I I'm seeing less fish with with the mod
19:54
there's still some but back in the day it was not as Extreme as that but you'd see you know five to 10 of these warts on
20:01
the skin of the fish and apparently it's not dangerous if you I mean it's not very inviting to want to eat them but if
20:08
you skin your walleye and FL your walleye like normal if you skin that skin off apparently it's gone it's not
20:13
in the meat whatsoever so it' be like black spot disease or have you eaten one with warts on it I don't think so cuz
20:18
usually usually and maybe I'm wrong on this but it's usually bigger fish too I
20:24
I haven't caught too many beautiful little clean two Pounders that have at least bunch of them on there we but
20:29
again it was late fall it was always the cold water period that we were looking at them and they were always the you know a four pounder is a small one so
20:36
you get these five six and 10 Pounders but I know I've never I've never and I don't even know if I could pull pull
20:41
myself to do it I don't think so that one on the screen there I would never eat water no my God that one needs to go right like to the biologist and then
20:47
into the garbage can for sure uh experts believe the rise in cases is due to increased walleye populations which is
20:54
interesting uh leading to more contact between fish and higher transmission rates so the more fish the closer they
21:00
are and the more this thing but they don't say what actually starts it what
21:06
started it exactly there's like there's other skin diseases like melanosis is a
21:11
skin disease on on fish but it's it's caused through daylight through the sun it's a skin pigmentation through the sun
21:17
this they don't say we Steven Cook he's our guy to get on this one this would be an interesting one for this this is a Steven Cook come on now issue yeah it
21:24
sure on fish it's they they're they're gross looking let's let's be honest if you want to catch and keep a couple of
21:30
fish to eat well you know you might not want to keep them with that on there right it's psychological so very scary
21:36
you know like that right there that's a movie Waiting that's a zombie fish right
21:41
there uh the full story on fishing canada.com it is Walley warts spreading
21:47
in Manitoba and CTV and Winnipeg broke the story originally and we kind of uh
21:52
piggybacked onto that wonder how far across the nation this goes I mean we got it here in Ontario they got it in Manitoba I mean obviously San and uh
22:01
you're assuming this is the same as the one that we've encountered here this looks different to me well I've never
22:07
seen the extreme of ours so because that one does look like ours right there right there no no one above that right
22:13
there both either are yeah both of those look like ours but it could be different not this that stuff over the eye is
22:19
crazy yeah he's covering half his eye poor guy imagine him swimming around there looking at hello ladies and then
22:25
you look at that and say oh my God who are you gonna place with that right he's not going to spawn he's not going to be spawn to well if it's a female she
22:32
probably be all right though but guys are sick guys are sick fan question of the week Mr Bowman
22:39
brought to you by the good Folks at fishfindermounts.com
22:44
hell yeah hell hell yeah damn right fishfindermounts.com if you're look
22:49
especially this time of year when you're kind of laying out the new boat you got
22:55
that wonderful new piece of electronic for Christmas and now's the time you're
23:00
getting a little antsy you want to start laying it all out and putting it together MH first thing you have to do
23:08
first thing you have to do is go to fishfindermounts.com even before you lay it out because
23:15
sometimes uh you'll see things that they have that you didn't even know were available that will help you in making
23:21
that decision for the perfect design of uh of your electronics in terms of usage
23:27
so uh fish finder mount yeah you got your boat in a nice little warm storage area like boat here what a
23:34
project for right now and that way opening day you are RTG ready to go RTG
23:39
baby come now so uh fan question of the week Mr Bowman submitted by Eli adir via
23:48
YouTube um you can do do YouTube info fishan canada.com Facebook Instagram is
23:55
this one it's a contender is this is this so this this is the uh ones where they can win some uh 100 buckaroos right
24:03
I actually realized I realized earlier in the show I the guy who wrote In The Listener feedback he did have a question
24:09
mark in there I noticed that too I didn't want to say anything because
24:14
uh but he was responding to an episode which is considered feedback correct so I don't think he was looking maybe he
24:21
wasn't looking he was just asking a question looking for a prize now ah well
24:26
maybe you could take either this guy or previous guy and uh if you want to choose one battle battle of the
24:32
questions and what was the previous one about the 20 minutes versus the long form why don't you guys ever come to a
24:38
long form you that really question no when you ready I think it's feedback just put a question mark just because
24:44
there's a question mark in there doesn't make it a great question no I I don't think so I can't I can't okay so we'll look at this one and we will at the end
24:51
we will y or it right right so what we're saying is if you submit a question
24:57
a good question a real question a thought-provoking
25:03
question uh we will and we and Dean picks it out of his drum and puts it on our script like this
25:12
one right here and we read it and we both decide hm that's a really good
25:19
question then you will get a $100 coupon uh uh redeemable on fishing
25:26
canada.com the store or shop. fishing Canada the store
25:32
whatever it's called I don't know don't like that do you you just don't like that I don't like sending them there I like going to fishing canada.com and
25:38
then you get on that beautiful P scrap maybe we'll scrap the shop. fishing canada.com we should we can get rid of
25:44
it they're all going well just tell them one place to go and that's it go on that beautiful front page the lobby that's
25:50
the lobby to our house and and and and you guys are telling people hey go through the back
25:56
door don't go to the front go through the back some people don't want to make a flamboyant entrance they just want to be you know
26:02
just you know Kramer yeah I don't want to be a Kramer when he comes he's the best oh my
26:10
God Nick spends all that time uh designing things that are on the in the
26:16
lobby right but he maybe he designed that did he not do that uh why did we put the back door in there then I have
26:22
no idea you guys snuck it in on the build it wasn't even on the original building site to plans then all of a
26:29
sudden there's a back door maybe because it's a single route you just go there and you're right to the store versus the front door to click click maybe I don't
26:36
know easier easier access anyways you if if you're selected and we read at you
26:43
right now he might have an answer down and we uh and we uh that was a compliment I'm
26:49
complimenting you in front of the the lovely audience I think it was a compliment I think he doesn't know a compliment from an insult maybe it
26:56
wasn't less than 100% w that's possible I'd like to know what's in his other ear he's got the one covered with the
27:02
Muff the other one who knows what's in that uh but if we do select and degree
27:10
that it's a wonderful thought-provoking question then um
27:16
you'll get a hundred bucks worth of uh goodies on uh the pretty generous no matter what that's that is generous
27:22
offer I have to say and uh up for contention right now or up for consideration right now contention would
27:28
be if we had somebody else to pick too is Eli Adair and what do they have to do Dean
27:35
exactly to subscribe to our YouTube channel and leave a question on a video
27:41
that's it yeah that's all so they have to be a subscriber to our YouTube uh uh Endeavors yeah and
27:49
then uh get together with friends and family and come up with a wonderful
27:54
thought-provoking question yeah and spell things right so I don't spell check them oh spelling is is critical on
27:59
this yeah I don't I don't spell we lay them out as is right we laying them out as remember we've read a couple of those
28:06
that were a little bit sketchy questionable yeah okay here we go Eli
28:11
adir says happy February fellas well so far I like them uh question thank you Eli yeah and
28:19
you wanted to make no mistake about it this was a question cuz he says question for discussion here on the topic right
28:26
away so far Eli's a winner as far as I'm concerned uh uh question for discussion
28:33
here on topic of invasive species nice uh since moving to Vancouver Island from
28:39
Southern Ontario Oh another transplant it's uh uh I've noticed that the invasive species are different here lots
28:47
of worry about bass and bluegill invading the lake and that's true remember when we went first time went
28:53
bass fishing on the island oh my God we almost got killed um bluegill invading the trout
28:59
lakes and Ontario worried about the round GOI Asian carp and zebra muscles
29:06
Etc it's been fun and surprising to learn the different Invaders on the other side of the country here's the
29:13
question now have you guys ever been surprised by an invasive species you
29:20
didn't expect any that affected the plan to fish I.E showing up with patterns for
29:27
shiner SL smelt and finding only goes and crayfish so what's he saying here what's
29:34
the question have you guys ever been surprised by an invasive species you didn't expect I can think of one examp I
29:41
can think of one I can think of one that right there that right there that really
29:46
surpris us surprised us good question Eli I like that question because now I can connect it to something hey that's
29:55
that is exactly what happened on that shoot Lake of the Woods tell folks was it a year ago two years ago whatever we
30:00
went up there and we last time I fish Lake of the Woods it was a typical Northern Lake well this time we got up
30:07
there and there was a lack of weeds there was a the whole system seemed to be off and then we found out very
30:13
quickly that uh the rusty crayfish was invading in a huge way and that
30:19
obviously had not happened previous so they are an invasive species that have got in and they've basically killed all
30:24
of the local previous crayfish along with the piles of cabbage weed etc etc
30:30
so we were totally surprised and the fact that our fishing we it kind of what's going on here he's right camera
30:37
down there yeah we dropped the camera down putting the camera down there it was insane to see the zombie apocalypse looked like that wall I see he could
30:43
have been fitting there perfect down there it was crazy so it did change everything for us so a great question
30:49
yeah um but you got lucky on that one uh Eli I'll be honest with you had it not
30:54
been for the fact that we encountered that sit situation just recently uh I
31:00
would have probably I'll tell you another one that that got me on was uh early in the years of earlier let's say
31:08
10 or 15 years ago whatever it was uh I did that uh that Smallmouth shoot on the
31:14
St Lawrence River uh near Cardinal interial with Brian diving and uh and we we got down
31:22
there and of course we saw smallo we saw Walley we saw some some good game fit
31:27
fish but when you looked at the bottom I could not believe my eyes at how many goes that I saw and they were like
31:35
literally thousands of them from the from the place where you put in you swim down to the Shipwreck there was there
31:42
was thousands along the bottom and you but and you're up above them 5T you don't see anything you get down to the
31:47
bottom they jump up they do this darting action and all that and you're looking there seeing them sitting there that one
31:52
surprised me too and that was kind of the before goes were really a big deal down there and there was so many of them
31:57
down there so that one was another interesting one on on a shoot that kind of surprised me did it change anything
32:02
for you um I don't know because we still caught we still caught small a small
32:09
mouth but we did just like that so that crayfish grabbing on that dead rig we were catching goes on our our pres our
32:16
presentations too so it it changed in that sense not many but the bigger ones we were getting you know six inch goes
32:22
on these presentations so maybe it didn't change so much and the smalles were not big like they are now compared
32:28
to eating the they probably weren't even eating the goes yet they probably didn't understand it yet but it was so they
32:33
have assimilated into the food chain now they certainly have assimilated for sure
32:39
yeah uh good question then are we going to give Eli I like it he hit the nail on the hip with that one especially all
32:45
right Eli congratulations Eli Eli Adair via email or via YouTube

34:07

34:13
show the winning is dued uh pretty much in Canadian history in terms of winning
34:18
special events his name is uh Chris Johnson the 2024 angler of the year in
34:24
the Elite Series South of the Border first Canadian to ever win uh that prestigious uh title and it is a
34:31
prestigious title very much much to his brother's chrin now hey Chris how you doing buddy I'm good yourself good we're
34:38
doing good that must have killed your brother huh like serious I know he probably did the at a boy thing at a boy
34:45
kid and all that stuff but deep down Insight def it chaps his ass a little bit I can guarantee it and I I remind
34:52
him of it every once in a while just to make sure it rub salt in the wind absolutely are you kidding me oh God
34:59
just everybody to listen everybody's listening Corey is Chris's brother and they both fish on the elite the basss
35:04
elite uh series and and although they work together monetarily so they
35:10
accumulate all the prize money together but there is definitely the johnon boys definitely are fighting with each other
35:16
and internally a little bit you know I got to beat him and I got to beat him so it's an ongoing thing that we've known these guys forever and it's that yeah
35:23
for sure that one must it's always a competition even when we're fishing in the same boat together in on B Quinny
35:30
it's always a competition who who puts more of the keepers in the in the boat at the end of the day we us each other
35:35
hard time that's aw it never stops how do you deal with the um from tournament
35:41
to tournament in terms of uh helping each other out how much help is given
35:46
and how much is kept behind and you can be perfectly honest with us no you know nobody will listen to this anyway so how
35:54
how much how much do you hold back you think um no I don't I don't usually hold
36:00
anything back and that's the nice thing about working with him um is I don't have to hold information back and say
36:07
like um I could tell him I was catching him on a hoola poop or over 40 feet of water and I'll tell him the area the
36:14
exact area where I caught him knowing that he will leave that area alone right but he'll try and duplicate at another
36:20
end of the lake so um it's surprising in the fishing World especially travel in
36:26
the US there's people have networks so my brother and I we work together very well but then like everyone that kind of
36:33
rooms together or they have buddies that they all call during the T the practice you can't do it during the tournament
36:38
during practice you all have a network and be like hey are you getting any bites or does this like just suck um
36:43
completely so everyone has a network um ours works really well because we're 100% transparent right and some other
36:50
guys have that and some guys lose friendships and stuff over it because one guy was withholding information and
36:58
then they get into a domestic because they didn't tell their buddy what they were supposed to sort of thing so it
37:04
just works well with us because we're 100% transparent and you know what it's also I'm not sure about the other guys
37:10
but with Cory and Chris it is a business it is their business to be doing this together right so it's it's to your advantage to share everything you can
37:16
I'm not sure with the other guys but if Buddy a and Buddy b are together and they're saying hey you know what we'll share information but we won't share prize money or something like that then
37:23
it might be you know it might be tense they might 100% And when someone's livelihood on the line and they got
37:29
bills to pay um then they might be like I'm just going to hold a little bit back so I maybe have a chance of winning this
37:35
$100,000 which goes a long ways because there's not as much money in the fishing world as people think even when you make
37:41
it to the pros um you're not making millions of dollars like golf or something it's uh you're still you're
37:47
still grinding let's talk about that for just a minute please because you're you're playing the game at the highest
37:53
possible level that anybody can in North America let's be perfectly honest so
37:58
it's it's time that we became a little more open about that we keep saying you know you're winning the big bucks and
38:03
and and all this stuff but the truth of the matter is it's still not recognized
38:10
as you mentioned golf oh my God there's a perfect example with the money they make and and really there's no different
38:17
while in my opinion I think and I could be wrong you're a golfer I'm not so you
38:23
might disagree with this but I think it takes more to win at the high levels
38:28
that Chris is playing in in terms of fishing and I oh I know I'm going to hear all kinds of people say but then it
38:35
does for the for the big golf pros I think it's more difficult to win uh well
38:42
what's what uh Chris one angler of the year in the fishing industry at that level than it is in golf my opinion it's
38:49
a good it's a good point I I'd probably put it on the same level well I'll tell you what the difference and Chris you
38:55
may or may not agree um a golf ER has to worry about himself a golfer has to get
39:02
himself in shape has to be technically sound that day or that week he has to be
39:09
on top of his game the only thing that matters is how good he performs and
39:15
executes in your world you could be at the top of your game you could be you
39:21
could be executing like you've never executed before but you've got another living organism that may may not decide
39:29
to play the game with you it's a good point and that's the problem I I agree with that is we have that variable with
39:35
a fish that's got a tail and likes to swim yeah so you could be the best
39:41
fisherman in the world and if those fish swim half a mile away overnight and leave your whole your whole area um it's
39:48
just a whole another curveball then you're then you're dealing with women fish too so they got a personality of
39:54
their own and sometimes they don't want to bite and you cannot make them bite there's a lot of there's a lot of
40:01
curveballs it you know that's the same thing with our our television show when we're shooting TV exactly the same where
40:06
we're we're fighting against those little beasts to try and complete a show right another living organism right it's
40:12
not smarter they are for sure exactly every species and so you know I I only
40:17
say that because I don't know whether people truly understand and
40:22
respect what it takes to do what you guys do right right yeah I I really
40:28
don't think they do they have no idea oh they're just out fishing and they're making money they're making all kinds of all they're doing is fishing you know
40:34
from one fishing hole to another and like anybody can do that you know but good point but I don't think there is a
40:41
professional Pursuit anywhere on this planet that is as difficult as what you guys do man I appreciate that and it's
40:48
uh it's a big mental game um a lot of us are kind of at the same skill level um
40:53
fishing wise but then the the mental game is huge in fishing you guys know from fishing tournaments and it's just
40:59
making decisions on the water and say you go to your first two spots there's no fish okay you got to scrap your whole
41:06
practice plan and just kind of wing it and uh kind of fly by the seat of your pants and start practicing during the
41:12
tournament and figure out where those fish went and um like I said a lot of it's between your ears when it comes to Tournament Fishing what's Cory or Chris
41:19
what's your uh opinion I'm sure you and Cory both have an opinion on the the new no entry fee rules of bass that that
41:27
changed a lot and everybody thinking oh my God that's great there's no entry fees now but uh from somebody that's
41:33
successful between you and your brother you guys are successful at this game does it help you or does it hurt you do you think that when I read the no entry
41:41
fee I found it at the same time as everyone else I read no entry fees I'm like oh that's great but uh then you get
41:47
down to the fine print and all the purse money's gone so it's like whoa back up here so the uh if they had to took the
41:55
no entry fees out and kept purse money the same would have been great but what happened is they just took the money out
42:00
of our purse and that was $4 million gone out of our purse wow and it hurt it hurts the top guys wow um they did a
42:08
bunch of U payout analysis over the past two or three years of like where some
42:14
anger finished and um with the new payout if I had the same year um I had
42:21
same year I same year I had last year but with this year's payout I would lose about 35 $40,000 wow out of my pocket so
42:31
it is not it's not good um for the top guys do you guys have I know in some of
42:37
the other professional sport no I I'll take that back probably all the other professional sports there is a players
42:43
union that um you know is able to step up and and say hey hey hey wait a minute
42:49
wait a minute wait a minute that that takes money away from my people and therefore we're not going to allow it do
42:55
you guys have anything like that no it's kind of funny you mention that it's like you're getting my email threads that I
43:01
get from all the Anglers they're uh they're trying to start an angler Union right now and try and help with some of
43:07
these issues um it's been tried in the past and never seems to work because to
43:12
be honest it's hard to get all the Anglers on the same page right right um it's almost impossible because the the
43:19
no entry fee helped a lot of guys that are struggling to pay their entry fees
43:24
have a couple bad years and they're not sure how they're going to come up with a $45,000 entry fee at the start of the
43:30
year to fish the elites and then you got 20 to 30 Grand in expenses so those guys are all saying well I like the no entry
43:36
fee Rule and then you still have a shot to go in and win a tournament for 100 grand the bad part about that is is the
43:43
guys that are cashing checks and in let's say top 20 in aoi um it took a lot
43:48
of money out of the pot in the top end so you can't get Anglers to ever be on the same page and it's it's like it it
43:56
never changed is here in Canada there's people that want one thing and you can't get all all the angles to agree have
44:02
your union versus non-union boys out there fishing together my opion get
44:08
everyone to agree on the union no one knows what the fisherman actually wants exactly my opinion um I didn't like when
44:15
I heard about this I didn't like it I I think the ENT feure time I think it it's
44:22
going in the wrong direction and I know most fishing dudes there will disagree
44:28
with this but let me finish first I think that we need professionalism I
44:34
think we need that top tier I think we need that to be
44:40
um a goal that's very hard to achieve both in terms of Financial and skill I
44:46
think that without that we start losing um the showcasing element of fishing you
44:53
know which which in turn as you know Chris brings the young guys into it brings the kids into it so that's that's
45:00
the thing about this is I agree 100% And The the guys that are unfortunately
45:06
maybe struggling to pay the bills aren't aren't having success they're unfortunately at the bottom of the aoi
45:12
yeah and there's attrition so yeah they're they're going to get kicked out anyways in the next year or two it's a
45:17
harsh reality and then that's making room for these young guys that are dominating at this sport they get to
45:23
come in and fish against the Bassmaster Elites and still have a chance to make the big money right instead of getting
45:30
to the elites and being like well the money's not that great even if I do have success exactly like you guys should you
45:36
guys should be shooting every weekend you guys should be shooting for a life altering paycheck and as far as I'm
45:42
concerned if you want to be the elites which the name implies exactly then every time that you participate you
45:50
should have an opportunity for a a windfall that could change your life
45:56
right and I'm with you on this are you looking for a second job maybe you're
46:02
looking to work for B Chris I've been got 38 jobs going on
46:07
right now the guy I've been saying this for 40 years even when we first started
46:13
uh putting tournaments on ourselves I I really believe that there should be a distinction between the
46:20
upper crust and everybody else everybody else can still play the game but at a
46:26
different level and what makes that difference The Bling it's the bling man you got to be able to
46:32
to to see that that that pot of gold that's what turn and and you know we alluded to golf earlier on I mean
46:40
listen arguably there's there's as many great golfers that don't play
46:47
professionally as there are professional golfers in the game right I would think yeah there's but what makes a difference
46:53
is winning that big paycheck that's what it's also what also makes a difference
46:58
is guys like these guys that have committed to it as their living as their job right it's 100% when you do it up in
47:04
Canada here you're fishing these tournaments in Ontario for instance you can't make that your job because you can't win enough to keep it you know to
47:10
make income on it like that so and when you say that Pete it's kind of funny like growing up fishing tournament here
47:16
never did I think I could do it for a living right it was always a hobby if you make a few bucks at it it was a
47:21
bonus but uh yeah and that's why I never had the mentality that I was ever going to fish for a living be honest and it
47:28
worked there great I'm super happy but um yeah now hopefully we kind of open
47:33
the doors to more Canadians we're seeing more guys fish the opens now from Canada which is great to see and I'm kind of
47:39
putting Canada on the map for fishing because there's a lot of good Anglers up here as you guys know absolutely I think
47:44
absolutely pound for pound we're we've got more skill yeah absolutely hey Chris
47:51
did I notice on moving on to some of the tournaments did I notice for this year's series there's no ST lawence event or is
47:57
it still on that's correct it finally gets a break wow is is that I think we've been there six years in a row or
48:03
so so normally is that what they do they give a lake a break or something like that it's not it's not the Johnston rule
48:08
here is it where they said well these guys are going to win again so what the hell is move it right no it never never
48:14
has I don't think a tournament gone to a location that many times but it honestly comes down to Dollars and you guys know
48:21
this um it's the the venues that the St Lawrence back 78 years ago it was
48:28
nothing for tourism the towns were were small the motels were empty now if you go to the St Lawrence River in the
48:34
summer from June till the end of the year it is packed with bass boats so the
48:40
um kudos to the townships that put the money up to get bass to go there and they saw how much uh like an investment
48:46
a return on their investment they're getting because their tourism has blown up it's now the number one fishery in
48:52
the world the last couple years so um they're they're getting their money's worth paying bass to go there and give
48:57
them exposure so that's the main reason and I'm sure we'll be back there in the next year or two yep okay cool you're
49:04
going to miss it for sure huh yeah but it it needs a break I I like a change of scenery to be honest and to be honest it
49:11
maybe give me a year to find a couple new spots out there because it's it's getting harder out there people the
49:16
fisherman are getting better the mapping is getting better uh live scope's making it easier for people to find spot so um
49:22
I might need a week or two just to go out and kind of play around cuz I don't get much time out there just to go fun
49:27
fishing so hope you mentioned Liv scope probably a good time for us to to quickly just jump
49:34
in and out of this topic obviously um it's very much in the fishing news the
49:39
last couple of years especially regarding the use of forward-facing sonar or the amount of forward- facing
49:46
sonar time that um Pros like yourself can use on events what's your opinion of
49:53
all this um I feel like gets beaten a dead horse I'm honestly sick of hearing about
49:59
it and people just complaining about it on social media and battling back and forth um I'll fish with it I'll fish
50:05
without it I don't really care um just make the rules and let's go fishing is my opinion in a perfect world what I
50:12
would like to see is let's for the Elite Series I'm talking let's flip a coin the
50:17
first term of the Year let's say it's live scope or no live scope and then
50:23
alternate alternate the rest of the year we have it we don't have it and then it
50:28
honestly it's just to kind of keep people quiet and because the person that wins the aoi at the end of the year has
50:34
to be able to catch them old school traditionally and you have to be able to keep up with the technology so no one
50:40
can really complain at the end of the year the thing that worries me about it is it it you know it it could just be
50:47
the beginning of the whole thing right what what's next so so somebody comes up with a a new type of uh I don't know
50:55
bait that is is not live but you know maybe it's so close to being live that
51:00
it's it's like and and then do we Outlaw that do we start putting rules and regulations every timea uh technology
51:08
allows us to it's like saying okay you know at the internet n it's not really there's a lot of bad things about the
51:15
internet maybe we shouldn't use it when we're on the bus you know maybe we shouldn't use it the bus dver doesn't
51:20
need to be using it but everybody else you know what I mean it's technology we can't turn the the hands of time back it
51:27
is what it is right and I and I have no problem with the technology I think it's a great tool for me to use and I think
51:35
it's a big it speeds up the learning curve for our younger Anglers your younger generation to get fishing and
51:41
the only downside I see about Liv scope is the television aspect right and it that's and that's only when you have a
51:47
camera in your boat it's it's hard for me and I think most the Anglers it's
51:54
like me trying to type something on myself phone send a text message and talk to someone at the same time you're
52:00
always locked in hard to have a conversation when they're saying like tell us what you're doing on the camera
52:06
well it's it's very distracting when you're staring at the Liv scope because it's like you're sending a text message
52:11
so that's the only that's the only um like downside of the Liv scope is for the television but other than that I
52:17
think it's a great tool I'm GL I'm glad he explained that because I've always had an issue in that what the hell's the
52:23
difference if he's watching his fish finder and fishing versus pitching and pitching and not catching a fish and bitching and bitching not catching a
52:28
fish but maybe that's the explaining part they can do it better by not having a look at a screen I guess that might
52:33
100% if I'm flipping or casting the spinner bait it's easy and you guys do it every day it's easy to talk to the
52:39
camera right if you are zoned in at that graph and you're looking at a fish you're trying to get it to bite and it's
52:45
very hard to have a conversation while you're doing that okay yeah that makes sense that that's what makes it hard to
52:51
talk to the camera it makes it a little less interesting in my opinion if you had your brothers would you rather not
52:57
have cameras around you if I what sorry if you had a choice would you would you
53:03
prefer No cameras on you during the event uh um probably but I've gotten a
53:09
lot better at it in the last few years um it's always exciting to have a camera on you because it means you're doing
53:15
well so that's not a bad thing but I used to get a little nervous for it but now um honestly when I'm fish and I kind
53:20
of forget about the camera and just do my own thing so I don't I don't mind it at all and it's great exposure
53:27
so are you given an option at all does anybody no so once you once you enter
53:32
that event um top five at the end of the day or top 10 at the end of the day you got a camera right yeah yeah the first
53:39
day it's picked by Bassmaster because um it might be the current aoi leader
53:44
always gets a camera and then they'll pick like a local favorite or someone that's done well in the lake previously
53:50
and then at the end of day one then they take the top five for the next day and then date Saturday and Sunday it's the
53:56
top 10 each day I get camera so you you don't have a choice um but like the
54:02
Bassmaster Classic's coming up and it's aired on Fox Sports and uh it's a big
54:08
thing for Bassmaster and fishing in general and uh I probably gonna have a camera on my boat day one because I want
54:14
ay which it's pretty cool so I think I'd rather have a camera for that one and all my friends and family be able to
54:21
watch and it it'll be fun ah it's great man it's it's nice to see that we've gotten to that point where where we've
54:27
got our Canadian boys got cameras and and the Bassmaster Classic come on hey
54:33
Chris so you so you won the anger of year last year just give me a give us an idea of the power fishing versus finesse
54:41
fishing is there do you think there was an advant did you do more of one than the other to succeed at that great uh
54:47
finishing year you know um it was kind of 5050 on live scope which you guys
54:54
know dominates and then power fishing shallow bank fishing kind of what I grew
54:59
up fishing um I did some bed fishing along the way so I would say it was a 50/50 split okay between I don't know if
55:05
you call finesse fishing like on the Liv scope a lot of them came on a jerk bait if that's kind of finesse and then uh a
55:12
few on a mnow and then my bank fishing was some tournaments was throwing top water down the bank and covering water
55:19
and then finding some bedded large MTH along the way so it was a 5050 split for
55:24
me can you look back at 2024 and say that was the moment that event that
55:32
whatever happened that's what gave me this incredible prestigious award as
55:37
angler of the year that moment made it for me um I don't know that there was
55:43
one moment as much as uh a tournament it was Lake Champlain um I was behind the
55:48
eightball going into Champlain and I knew I needed probably a top 10 finish
55:54
at Champlain to have a chance at anger the year which was going into the St Lawrence River where I figured I could
55:59
have a good finish so it was going into Champlain and then ended up having a
56:05
great tournament finished second I lost by 1 ounce but at that moment I was like
56:10
I've really got a shot at this this aoy title W um but there was there was
56:16
probably 10 different fish catches I could tell you about on Lake Champlain that went well and I was like oh this is
56:22
it's going right do do you remember all of you can you sit back and look at last
56:29
year for example I won't I won't push you beyond 2024 do you remember all of the fish that you caught pretty much um
56:37
and it's it blows it blows the girlfriend's mind because I can't remember what she told me to do that
56:43
morning I get that from my wife all the time oh my God but then she's like yeah you remember where you caught a fish six
56:49
years ago and what fit you caught it off it's it's amazing that is awesome wild I
56:54
remember stuff I remember stuff from like oh yeah 30 40 years ago on a particular fish the time of day the
57:02
weather condition black and blue a weed hole and exactly it's crazy but I can't
57:07
remember to take the garbage out yeah hey I got one Chris um so in a uh a
57:14
normal tournament situation you guys as the tournament starts there's no cell phones usage or whatever so so Corey and
57:21
Chris are are working together before the tournament and then now you're still working together but now you're no communication with phones in that St
57:28
John River Event I believe I saw or heard you said you told Corey where a fish was you went boat to boat and told
57:34
him where a fish was so you can if you guys are boat to boat you can say hey dude here here here you can tell them
57:39
whatever you want in that s yeah that that was kind of a lucky scenario but yes you can in a tournament any of the
57:46
competitors um if whatever your buddy's going by or someone's struggling to get a fish and be like hey um they're biting
57:52
here if they're close to you whatever you can be like come over here catch your fifth fish get a limit and um that happens quite often the St John's river
57:59
was kind of a weird one cuz Cory was leading the tournament and we were fishing in the same area with two or three other boats and everyone had gone
58:06
and he was struggling and he was kind of getting grumpy he just watched me catch like a six pounder and it was late in
58:12
the day he's like I need one more fish and I happened to go over one that I thought was like a five and a half to a six and he was like he was complaining
58:19
he needed one more fish and I'm like all right I went over it I'm like here there's a big one over here cuz it was
58:25
on a bed so a beded fish for those of people don't know it stays on an area maybe the size of your table and it
58:31
doesn't leave they're not always easy to catch but I'm like there's one here and I had just caught a good fish I had a
58:37
great weight I knew I was going to be in good shape and if he caught one more he'd probably win the tournament so he
58:42
had never won the Elite Series tournament and my mom was always hoping oh I hope Cory wins this tournament so I
58:48
was just trying to keep my mom happy really that Cory could finally win one but that won't happen again and he he he
58:55
goes over to it catches it in one cast and it was like a seven pounder I was like oh my God I thought it was like a
59:01
five so that would have went a long way for me and turns out he didn't even need the fish to win he won by so much if I
59:08
had have caught that one I would have finished second so it would have been really cool wow but that was kind of a
59:13
one-off situation but typically when we're fishing a tournament and we talked to each other before in practice we're
59:19
kind of dissecting the lake breaking it down if I tell him I caught him in whatever banana Creek on a on a swim jig
59:26
or whatever then I don't want him to come in that Creek during the tournament because then we cannibalize each other
59:32
right so he'll be catching my fish and then if you're splitting fish up like that you're not going to win tournaments
59:37
right you need to have areas to yourself but the idea is he gets to go to another section of the lake and he'll try and
59:44
figure out that pattern in another section where I wouldn't be fishing or vice versa so we try we really try and
59:49
stay away from each other in tournaments okay how much uh is there and I'll go
59:56
back to our careers back in the old days of Tournament Fishing here in Canada uh
1:00:01
because there was a lot of it back then how much of this game is between the years
1:00:09
like do you let people I know you guys are great at it probably not purposely but you guys get
1:00:15
into the other competitor's heads real bad okay I got to tell you right now
1:00:21
real bad how much of that takes place in your day-to-day Tournament Fishing you let other people have you been able to
1:00:27
block everything out I guess is what I'm asking and that is one of the hardest things about fishing is blocking out
1:00:34
what you call the dock talk right people saying like after practice you're talking to a couple Lang like oh I
1:00:39
caught 30 pounds for my best five today and they were they were biting a worm in 30 feet of water you really have to
1:00:46
block that stuff out like you said and do your own thing yeah and figure out the lake catch them the way you want to
1:00:51
your strengths cuz half of that stuff you hear it sends you on a wild goose Chase and you just wasted your you only
1:00:57
get 3 days of practice you can't waste time chasing someone else's fish so you got to do your own thing but um yeah
1:01:04
there's people that will purposely try and send you on a wild goose chase and then you're just wasting your practice
1:01:10
if you do that you're going to end up with bad events you got an experience don't you I was the worst sucker at that
1:01:18
game on the planet and the perpetrator nine times out of 10 was a very good
1:01:24
close personal friend and we went on to do start a business together and that is
1:01:29
Peter pocock pety pocock he threw one into you every time did he my God I can see him doing that you know you know
1:01:36
Chris I knew it you know I've been official with him for years I knew I knew what he was doing but do you think
1:01:42
it's like a big bass right he's looking at your bait look he knows it's not good he knows it's going to hurt
1:01:50
but he told you didn't you every time every time he got those big eyes going
1:01:55
he said and there's that great big giant on those stumps over there oh yeah you oh he was the worst he's was he was the
1:02:03
best uh head game artist on in the circuit for sure I love that guy he's
1:02:08
the best hey hey uh Chris before I don't know if we're going to wrap up or not but I want to know we got uh the
1:02:14
Bassmaster Classic coming up in in a month basically from where we're recording this right now in Ray Roberts in Texas how do you feel about your uh
1:02:21
your chances there I'm actually really excited for this one I think it's going to fish to my strengths I've been there
1:02:27
once before for a classic it was in June completely different time of year but the water was high and it was flipping
1:02:34
bushes kind of brings you back to like the autonomy River day flipping willow trees and it was a lot of fun um I think
1:02:41
this year it's going to be we're it's setting up it's end of March the fish are all going to be pushing shallow I
1:02:46
think it's going to fish really well because the fish are going to be spawning pre-spawn they're all going to be around the bank and my strengths I
1:02:53
believe are like sight fishing power fishing shallow but then I think you're also going to have to throw some um Liv
1:02:59
scope into it like shallow um stumps or something get the big pre-s spawners that are sitting just at front staging
1:03:05
and I just I think it fishes to my strength and I'm looking forward to it um I think I should have a good chance
1:03:11
at it but these Anglers are getting so good that it's hard to have an advantage anymore so um I just I think it's going
1:03:18
to fish well I think you're going to see some giant bass CAU um it's Texas and you're probably going to see a nine or 10 pound or at least weigh in so
1:03:25
hopefully there's one them in my life well that makes uh pre fishing a little more difficult when you're fishing in
1:03:31
that environment right because you obviously are counting on getting some
1:03:36
big bites and if you you know accidentally do that during pre-fish you're OB you're screwed so how do you
1:03:42
how do you deal with that so the classic pre-fishing is it's a different animal
1:03:47
in itself so practice starts um a week before the tournament so I get to
1:03:53
practice Friday Saturday Sunday then I got Monday and Tuesday is off days which
1:03:59
is get checked in the hotel whatever and then Wednesday we get an official practice day which is 7 till 3: and then
1:04:06
we get another off day and then the tournament starts so the stuff you find a week before the tournament in the
1:04:12
springtime is changing daily so it's very hard to put a pattern together that
1:04:17
far before the tournament so you're kind of almost practicing to see where the fish are going to be and then you get
1:04:23
Wednesday two days before the tournament to see what's changed kind of come up with a game plan and start fishing on
1:04:28
the Friday so um catching a fish a week before the tournament it's probably not
1:04:34
going to be there anyways by the time the tournament comes that Wednesday yeah you'd want to shake fish off not not uh
1:04:40
not sting them but that Wednesday is going to be tricky like do I go looking for beded fish all day do I try and find
1:04:46
pre-spawn ones that are are coming on the Liv scope and only eight hours to figure that out it's It's Tricky and
1:04:53
that's what I said earlier on that's why I think you guys are at the top rung of
1:04:59
true athletes I really mean that because think of what he just said and let's
1:05:04
take it back to golf which which is probably the the highest profile individual uh non- Team event Prof in
1:05:11
terms of Prof professional sports nothing's really going to change in their game from from day one to day
1:05:19
10 leading up to the event other yes it's good it's going to be a little windier it's going to be a little sunnier it's going to be a little a
1:05:25
little bit of rain maybe it's gonna but that that goes for everybody right you're talking about another living
1:05:32
organism that you might make contact with 7 days earlier and you just said
1:05:37
you have to kind of figure out where is he going to go because sure as hell he ain't going to be here during the event
1:05:43
and that's why I say what you guys do is just on a different level completely and
1:05:50
and the world does not recognize that the world doesn't understand how difficult it is to be a professional
1:05:58
fisherman at that level at your level they just don't get it I hell we have a
1:06:03
hard time relating to it and we're in the business right so so the average person sitting at home really doesn't
1:06:09
have sure they don't know that have a a grip on what you guys do and what you represent they think a fish is a fish is
1:06:16
a fish no matter what right there's aoll over there he's always there he's always going to be there and these guys know it
1:06:22
he lives there he's going to go get him on on the tournament dat well that's just the fun the funny thing is and when
1:06:27
you say that people watch on TV like oh this is the greatest job in the world they see you catching fish put them in the boat you're having fun the things
1:06:33
you don't see are all the bad days when you're going out there trying to find the fish and you're striking out and
1:06:39
having bad tournaments well you don't have a camera on you that day and you don't see all the bad days so people
1:06:45
just see the highlights they don't see that you're a full-time truck driver and you're a part-time fisherman like I got
1:06:51
to drive to Florida Texas Oklahoma back to Texas I'm going all over the US
1:06:56
how many miles how many miles how many miles a year do you put on your vehicle
1:07:01
oh I don't know but 70,000 miles holy yeah there's some bad stuff that
1:07:09
goes with the job that people don't see oh my God hey 70,000 100 over 100,000
1:07:15
kilomet a year and during those miles have you had any major breakdowns of the vehicle or the trailer of your boat or
1:07:20
anything like that knock on wood no but I tried try and keep a current vehicle
1:07:27
not that that always works is like a two-year-old I kind of try and trade them in but uh you never know what could
1:07:33
Happ get a flat on the highway who knows yeah yeah yeah you've had your fair share of uh technical uh failures during
1:07:41
and pre uh fishing for tournaments um along the way how uh difficult is it to
1:07:49
be able to block that out you know like you you your trolling motor goes on the
1:07:55
you know you're you ding a prop and and you're you got no you only got one blade left on like how much of that goes into
1:08:03
that that's really hard and that's a big mental thing again um or the big thing
1:08:09
that I everyone worries about now is your live scope transducer goes out and you're on a live scope tournament it's
1:08:15
like oh no what do I do um yeah I've had that happen you got to go fish and
1:08:20
you're you're not not necessarily trying to win you're just trying to stay in the game for the next day just to try
1:08:26
and keep yourself in it but yeah the trolling motors broke on me big motors broke I've had to fish whatever I made
1:08:32
it halfway to my spot and the big motor went and you're stuck fishing halfway
1:08:37
between nowhere and you just got to you got to make do you got tough you got to be mentally tough for that yeah and it's
1:08:44
if you lose a giant fish say we go to Texas and you're in the classic and you're in contention and you lose a 10lb
1:08:50
bass it plays on your mind big time and you're thinking about like blew the tournament but you got to put that
1:08:57
behind you and just keep going and be mentally stable I guess and and uh just
1:09:03
keep focused yeah people don't think that happens to you guys right people think that every fish that you make
1:09:09
contact with uh you know comes to the boat in the net and uh plays a part in
1:09:15
your game but boy there's a lot of times that that just isn't the facts you know yeah and I've wanted to throw fits on
1:09:22
the front deck trust me when a 10 pner jumps off and kick and break stuff and call it everything but yeah I won't even
1:09:29
get into that but there's a lot of names I call them but I can't do that when it comes to a tournament and just kind of
1:09:34
stay calm and keep fishing and keep going but back to that uh breakdowns and
1:09:39
stuff yeah one thing we never had in Canada that when I went to the states I'm like this is unbelievable it's like
1:09:45
a NASCAR pit crew and every U manufacturer Mercury Ranger bass pro um
1:09:52
Garmin all there so if you have a issue with any of your um products on your boat you get off the water that day they
1:09:58
fix it on the spot or say you're driving down the lake and you throw a blade um I can call the Mercury guy and if he's a
1:10:05
30-minute driveway he'll come meet me on the lake and try and put a prop on to keep me going the rest of the day so
1:10:11
having that um to depend on is unbelievable and I never had that growing up and it it's just amazing the
1:10:18
support that we do get from uh the manufacturers you know in the early days of Tournament Fishing in Canada now I'm
1:10:25
going back to probably before you were born but uh we had that kind of support here we did Mercury yeah Mercury was
1:10:32
every every event uh and at that time motor guide they were at every event if
1:10:37
you had a problem mechanically there was like you just say there was somebody that would drive out to wherever you are
1:10:43
and they'd bail you out bring you new props new well we had a problem uh a few
1:10:48
years ago problem well no at the B1 at in Quebec in Quebec yeah and they had a
1:10:54
Mer team there that fixed this up that's great we had a verado there and they
1:11:00
they literally fixed it on the spot on the water it's unbelievable to have that
1:11:06
kind of support when when I went to the states um I didn't have any of the the big sponsors whatever but I made sure I
1:11:13
was running the products that were there to support the Anglers because if you had an issue you needed that there when
1:11:19
you get off the water they'd fix you up and not all of them were there so it was a big selling feature speaking of
1:11:25
let's pay some bills shall We Tell Tell us who you're involved with who's supporting you what what brands are you
1:11:32
uh supporting give us the the lowdown on that um I I've been very fortunate over the last few years to pick up some new
1:11:38
sponsors and I've had some that I've had since I was fishing as a kid when I was 15 but um Ranger Boats um was probably
1:11:46
the the biggest one I grew up fishing with them with my dad um they've been with me forever Bass Pro Shops I came on
1:11:52
board with them about five years ago and uh it's been great um dawa under arour
1:11:58
Garmin I've been with them kind of before Garmin was even cool and I think you guys are on the same boat to be
1:12:05
honest for sure for sure now everyone wants it but back 10 15 years ago U
1:12:11
there wasn't too many people running Garmin but yeah a lot of great sponsors seagar powerpole um Mercury it's funny
1:12:18
I'm with Mercury now and you guys know Michelle kilber she used to run I believe what was it GM Pro that's right
1:12:24
yeah you guys and now um I'm dealing with Michelle out of the US and she's
1:12:29
the like helping the tournament support and stuff and running the marketing for mercury so I see her all the time nice
1:12:35
cool she was she was instrumental uh back back in the day her and her then
1:12:41
husband uh they were the two of them were were instrumental in in keeping
1:12:46
Tournament Fishing alive in this country um can we just go there for just a
1:12:53
moment um aside from population obviously that's a big thing and aside
1:12:58
from the vast amount of geography and water that we have to cover why do you think Canadian
1:13:06
Tournament Fishing and I call it stunted I call it you know it's kind of barefoot
1:13:12
and pregnant in my opinion okay is is probably is is unpolitically correct as
1:13:18
that may be today why do you think that is why have we not been able to just move that extra little step
1:13:26
forward ah I just I don't think we have the platform to promote it enough to
1:13:32
have sponsors or especially non-endemic sponsors put money into fishing in Canada like how many tournament Anglers
1:13:39
are there in Canada as opposed to one state in Texas how many termin angles
1:13:45
are down there um it just like and how many viewers if we um put fishing live
1:13:51
in Canada how many viewers in Canada are going to tune in to watch that yeah um they they watch the the Saturday
1:13:57
morning 30 minute episode of whatever fishing Canada um which is is good but I
1:14:03
don't think there's as many tournament fishermen that are kind of dialed in and I sponsors can't justify spending 20
1:14:10
grand to sponsor an angler to go fish tournaments they just there's no Roi for them in my personal opinion I I'd love
1:14:16
to see it but I just don't see it Happ them yeah just don't have enough of them and yet we look at it every day and we
1:14:23
say why there's like everybody wants to fish bass everybody wants to fish a tournament everybody's into it and we
1:14:30
you go out to a lake on the weekend you know and and there's bass boats
1:14:35
everywhere it seems like there's all kinds but really in the big picture there's just not enough yeah and it's
1:14:41
the support like Chris says it's the they I guess these sponsors see the lack maybe the lack of I don't know not
1:14:48
numbers you're right there's lots of numbers of boat but boats but but if you go if you go to a weigh-in how many fans
1:14:54
come to bass way in in Ontario I can count them on two hands and most of them are family members right and I just I
1:15:01
don't think we can get that sort of Drive i' I'd love to see it and I hope some uh Innovative tournament director
1:15:08
comes in and make it a festival make it a music concert involved with it make it a play zone for kids during the weighin
1:15:15
and maybe drive some Spectators that way and get four or 5,000 people through a weigh in but I don't think you can do it
1:15:22
on fishing alone so that's that's my two cents but um for example there's a I
1:15:28
think cisa um just announced that they're having a tournament at a Kingston guaranteed 50 Grand which we
1:15:35
haven't seen that in forever right so um I'm hoping the Anglers get behind this
1:15:40
and support it I think it's a $1,500 entry fee yeah and that's a big frustrating thing is everyone wants big
1:15:46
payouts but no one wants to pay no one wants to pay any entry fees to get it so it's a catch 22 so we'll see how many
1:15:54
people jump up and support this cuz there's finally a guaranteed payback and I hope that the the tournament fills up
1:16:01
but then I just there's not enough sponsors to put hey I'm going to cover your entry fee for that tournament it's
1:16:07
it's expensive to go to Kingston for a week practice it's probably the most expensive place there is because you
1:16:12
burn $200 in gas a day on the lake and uh so there's just there's not enough Anglers with the sponsors to support
1:16:19
them to pay those big entry fees either so true it's a tough one but everybody wants to be a pro
1:16:25
you know that's the problem and that's the problem I have with that and I think the uh although Joe's intentions are
1:16:32
good with that event and and we're certainly going to support the hell out of it because we believe we need to break through this this Quagmire that
1:16:39
we're stuck in Tournament Fishing here in Canada but I also and I've had lots
1:16:45
of discussions with him regarding this I I do also believe we need to break away
1:16:51
and you may not want to hear this um we need to break away from the team concept
1:16:56
because I don't think we can call ourselves professional if if we continue down that same road with Team fishing um
1:17:05
it's certainly not in the US it's not something that that happens uh on the
1:17:10
major events in the US for the most part and it certainly shouldn't be here and I
1:17:15
think when we start breaking up those teams first of all what we're going to do is grow the sport because now the
1:17:21
Johnson's aren't going to use the same boat and they're not going to use the same tackle and not going to use any of
1:17:28
the same they have to have two separate packages and that's going to help grow and i' I've been saying that for 40
1:17:34
years we we we do have it within here within our country we just need to break
1:17:40
up the twom Man team concept and I know everybody right now is booing me like
1:17:46
Trump okay but Trump's booing you but if you want to grow if you want it to grow
1:17:52
that's what you got to do you know if we don't have a kazillion people to draw from if we've only got a finite amount
1:17:58
there's only you know 200 Anglers who are predisposed to fish
1:18:03
tournaments on a serious level and maybe become Pros well those 200 are 100 boats
1:18:10
100 teams well let's break them up and make them 200 we've doubled our we've already doubled in
1:18:16
size thing the problem I see with that is those 200 guys they get to split those expenses you know just it's the
1:18:24
expenses I think that really get people and then only one guy has a boat or whatever the one guy partner boat's too
1:18:31
old and I'm I'm fine either way if it's a proam if it's a team tournament I just
1:18:37
don't think people can afford to take a week off work go to Kingston pay $1,500
1:18:43
entry fee so your expenses are going to be almost four grand yeah for a CH it's
1:18:48
expensive and there's there's not a lot of sponsor support for Anglers everyone's got Badges and patches on
1:18:53
their shirt for sponsor ship but how many are actually getting cash to help them pay pay some entry fees so I think
1:19:01
that's kind of where it's stuck it's sad and you know what the other thing is that as Canadian tournament Anglers
1:19:07
that's all they know is the team thing right that's all we've ever done as as the team thing you know mean so it's kind of a way of life for it and it's
1:19:14
not uh it's not making a living it's a it's a hobby basically right it's a hobby yeah anyways and that's that's the
1:19:20
way I looked at it growing up in Canada it's a hobby if you make some money at it it's a B yeah and if people can go fish for 50
1:19:28
Grand and instead of paying $1,500 solo they can split it with their buddy go have fun have a vacation I think they're
1:19:35
more looking at as a hobby and not to do it professionally and that's all well and good the only problem with that is
1:19:42
that we lose the opportunity to see people like you and your brother because and I don't blame you by the way because
1:19:48
you're going South of the Border where the money's at right we we lose the level and quality of our
1:19:55
professional Anglers because they're going South of the Border to apply their trades and and that means that we are
1:20:02
not exposed to that level of of professionalism it's all South of the
1:20:08
Border and that's the problem and that's going back to that kid you alluded to earlier on maybe maybe even you you know
1:20:14
30 years ago would fall into this category you missed the opportunity to
1:20:19
create that hero that star that a young kid can look up to and say one day I
1:20:25
want to be Chris you know because you guys are doing that for the Americans South of the Border and that's the
1:20:31
problem I I agree with that and I I used to fish that Canadian Kingston proam or
1:20:36
whatever it was yeah and I think that proam was a great way to get people into the sport that didn't have the
1:20:43
basketball but got to go spend a day with me or bomi or whoever you got to go
1:20:49
spend a day out in the water pay $ four or $500 and you got three days of fishing with the best in the country in
1:20:56
Canada and then all of a sudden you're seeing some of those guys down the road become Pros or if it's a 19-year-old kid
1:21:02
wants to learn it's an easy way for him to get in and see how it's done firstand well said well said uh my
1:21:09
friend we could keep you here all day as you know uh but you got things to do I know's got a got I got tax things to do
1:21:17
it's no fun it's another one of the bad things living up here in Canada paying 50% of my taxes
1:21:26
there's always a downside to everything in there listen uh we wish you nothing
1:21:31
but the best down there uh certainly in the classic coming up we're rooting for you the whole country is rooting for you
1:21:38
um Ki kick some uh entire season get another aoi buddy do that two two in a
1:21:43
row that's always the goal every year to have a shot at aoi so you can't win it on the first one but you can certainly
1:21:49
blow it has uh have very many Anglers won it back to back
1:21:55
uh not many there's definitely been a few feel like K May Aaron Martins but
1:22:00
I'm not sure has kbd done it has he uh I don't think so not back to back
1:22:06
multiples for sure but not back to back so that's what you need to do there there there you go piece of cake I feel
1:22:11
like I feel like one of them have but I'd have to look it up but I'm just gonna worry about the first tournament
1:22:17
one at a time all right brother listen thank you very much say hi to everybody say Hi to Dad uh Lynn there uh he's down
1:22:26
in Florida right now bass fishing I'm up here in Canada what's wrong with this picture exactly best of luck to you my friend
1:22:33
thank you thanks for having me on today guys pleasure thank you um wow yeah you
1:22:39
know I remember those two when we were growing up because they were at every event with h with uh Lynn their father
1:22:47
and they were Keen even back then you could tell you could tell that there was something there I F to Mike Miller and I
1:22:55
fished a tournament on Lake s i remember this and U and Mikey and I got something like third place or something like that
1:23:01
and Cory and Chris were really young I they were 16 years old they were fourth or fifth place just behind us and you
1:23:08
could see the pissed off disappointment in their face for getting that you know for being in the top five or six and
1:23:14
they're saying we didn't win it they were just pissed they didn't win it they were that good like not pissed off and being they're just like disappointed in themselves for at that
1:23:21
age you know 16 years old and we should have won this tournament that's how good they are there's something in those two
1:23:26
there's something there isn't there it's not just uh they've had great toage
1:23:31
obviously Lynn uh who was a tournament Canadian tournament angler for years he obviously passed down something there
1:23:39
but but there's more to these two oh it's more to it than that these two guys are it's it's they machines It's Magic
1:23:46
they're good well we've seen them uh pre- fishing I I remember one time on the St Lawrence we watched I think it
1:23:52
was Chris uh pre- fishing and we both and we said like what is he doing we couldn't
1:23:58
figure out what he was do saw one time where he was running a camera and that's all he did he sat in his his boat and he
1:24:04
just sat in the cockp pick and ran down current for about two miles of just running camera you know what I mean but
1:24:09
this one time I'm talking about he was in they were pre I think it was Chris
1:24:15
was pre-fishing in extremely shallow water when in fact we had and I think
1:24:21
the majority of the field had determined that there were no fish in that shallow
1:24:26
water and yet there he was MH just plowing away through the shallow water
1:24:32
we were all out on the edges right looking for fish there's something those guys know something that we don't I'm
1:24:39
telling you and and now it's manifesting itself into tremendous careers South of
1:24:44
the Border yeah you know oh they're they are that good anybody listening here those two brothers along with Gussy
1:24:50
along with Coupe they're all but but they are all I mean those two the johnon brothers are a special breed of angler
1:24:56
that's for sure bass angler they're good at everything but they're really good at Bass so anyways uh that are it I want to
1:25:03
remind the good people who are tuned in watching this uh podcast about the
