[Music] and now another exciting episode in The Adventures of Outdoor Journal
0:06
radio well a very Merry Christmas to one and all thank you for joining us on Outdoor Journal radio the podcast he is
0:13
Peter Bowman ho ho ho easy somebody's going to come on the show and embarrass
0:18
you in a moment uh our usual crew of baa Nick and Dean Merry Christmas filthy
0:26
animal that's right that's what we are buddy don't you forget and joining us in a few moments is a
0:32
very special special guest and he used to come on the radio show when we were
0:38
doing live radio on this uh with this very product and uh he joins us uh here
0:43
very shortly he's coming from a long he's been on a long journey is all I can tell you okay all right I think so
0:51
before we get on to that uh first of all uh what do you think of these outfits I think I think you and I should keep
0:57
these and go out bar hopping later I think the third or fourth year so I know we're keeping them I just don't know we're bar hopping at them yet
1:04
but okay all right before we get on with the show I want to remind folks no these are not available although this shirt is
1:11
available on uh the shop uh fishing Canada store shop. fishing canada.com
1:17
along with a multitude of other wonderful um clothing and items in
1:23
general there if you haven't been there so far uh you need to go check it all out sales are on and off there's free
1:29
shipping on items over $100 or or total uh new items in stock
1:35
and a very christmy look to our advertisement too wow you know very winry Christmasy very nice boys um
1:43
listener feedback listener feedback this one comes from uh Jim LM Jim LM Jim LM 20175 it's
1:54
in response to episode 97 of this very podcast YouTube yeah we just did that
2:01
that's not very long ago no might have been last week as a matter of fact week before quick I like that quick response
2:07
uh and I'll let you read it okay from jimm 2075 uh via YouTube on the topic of
2:13
paid parking because we did a whole podcast on paid C parking on 97 and the how we're getting ripped off the Niagara
2:20
Parkway started charging for parking along the Parkway and with and the five launch ramps that's used to be free they
2:27
posted yesterday December 13th they will be spending n $ million of this money
2:32
redeveloping the fort eie Marina property that's awesome increasing the number of docks and adding a restaurant
2:38
and better access to for public use uh when they started charging they promised
2:44
to improve these properties so I do not I myself do not mind paying in this case and that's exactly what we were saying
2:50
if this you know if the money's going to go back to prop but I'll tell you what buddy that's a lot of money you and I
2:56
need to be getting into the parking business we need to buy some land you 19 m and it's going and it looks like it's just about I don't know how long it's
3:02
been going for but woo a lot of Revenue wow good for them but you know what if
3:08
if they're doing that obviously once the improvements have been made everybody that's paying into it will be able to
3:15
enjoy them and take take advantage of them so um I think there is probably a limit to that concept and that that
3:21
thinking but let's put it this way at least it is going to the right places
3:27
but when they increase the uh parking and launching uh pricing to a point
3:35
where it's ridiculous and don't tell you why exactly all they have to do is tell you why then yeah it's uh it's it's and
3:42
will they do the old Aurelia Co thing when that they'll leave the parking paying up there after this all the 19
3:49
million put into it and they'll still keep pulling in Revenue you never know they might keep doing that too so hopefully they would just say okay
3:54
that's good now everything is fixed up we'll go back to free parking up there because you won't need it because you can go down to the marina so so that'd
4:00
be nice good that's good if it's going back into the at least property yeah at least they I think it's awesome uh on
4:06
the podcast uh Network highlight d o a l o Diaries of a lodge owner episode 23
4:13
we're giving him a lot of uh air time it seems to be is there a deal going on between you
4:19
and forth it goes back everyone gets theirs they they all shows up Ste didn't
4:25
give you a bottle of whiskey for Christmas extra or anything like that no comment on episode 23 uh with our good
4:31
friend Steve NS Wiki Lodge owning Essentials and uh he talks about various
4:37
things that you must do as a lodge owner uh one of them is one that we've participated with him on on several
4:43
occasions at the old Lodge and at his Jam nights that was unique that was fun
4:48
to be honest soon as you walk into Shier Lodge when Steve was there at least I don't know if it's still the same way he
4:53
had three guitars up on the wall right there and they looked like they were just decorations like we have up here
4:58
uhuh those all grab them up and play him Stevie said do you play do you play do you play and what he do is he'd get
5:04
everybody together okay well you got to come get together on Tuesday night or tomorrow night or whatever and we're going to have a jam night and she was a
5:11
jam night I mean it was enjoy it was great for us to participate in those but can you imagine as just a a a regular
5:18
person going to the lodge say for the first time and um having a wonderful day out in the water and having a great meal
5:24
in the dining room and meeting some friends Etc and now it's uh it's late in
5:29
the evening and the fire is crackling outside and all of a sudden the guitars come out and people start jamming and
5:35
singing and oh what a great experience what a surprise that would be cuz that we don't I don't think we've ever seen
5:40
it at another Lodge have we we've seen somebody maybe have a guitar a little bit maybe one person playing it I do remember one time we were at oh Lake
5:50
aabas Athabasca yeah remember that yeah that that they came up with the guy singing the Opera say star what he sing
5:58
the like America or something first of all he did God Bless America but then he sang uh the Tom Jones song Delilah right
6:07
oh my God so it turns out this guy uh was I don't recall his name but this was years ago but he was he was a little
6:15
little small little man an older gentleman and he was sitting by himself we were sitting around the the
6:21
campfire and um and there's a couple of guitars going and people talking and stuff and all of a sudden we hear this
6:29
this huge voice belt out this this song The Lila and it was coming from him and
6:37
I'm telling you this guy was so impressive the way he he did he not sing it at an NHL game well he he sings The
6:44
Anthem at the Baltimore Oreos okay that's what it was uh uh Camden Yards he
6:50
was the he was the guy who sang The Anthem we just met him at in the middle of nowhere at this place but the voice
6:57
in the middle of the night in Northwestern Canada in the middle of
7:04
nowhere was was Haunting is the only way I can describe it he was so good so different yeah yeah any we had a great
7:11
time but those things are important when you go to lodges you know far too often I think people think that that they
7:17
shouldn't be socializing and and quite the opposite I think a lodge that offers you an opportunity to socialize with the
7:25
other guests there I think those are some of the best lodges as opposed to everybody sticks to their cabin and and
7:31
you know and jam night there would be sometimes indoors and sometimes Outdoors you sit there's a big area on the big
7:38
granite rocks there five or six of Adon chairs and then everybody sat around there and the picnic tables and we just
7:44
sat with guitars out there lit a fire and just gave her fantastic it was fun maybe a beer or two maybe involved there
7:51
it might have been the odd one I I didn't see any personally but yes uh anyways that's a whole bunch of that is
7:57
available on episode 23 uh Lodge owning Essentials of Diaries of a lodge owner
8:03
podcast as we speak if you haven't already checked it out um go listen to it it's fantastic they uh they uh they
8:10
have a whole B Steve's got a whole bunch of things there about going to your your first trip going to a lodge Etc uh in
8:16
the news in the news this is a biggie in our industry for you and I for sure I think
8:22
so it's something we we heard rumor of but we didn't know what we just got confirmation confirmation uh after I
8:28
think 19 years or 20 years in the business um
8:34
fishful thinking show will be uh closing his doors uh on global television
8:40
network at least um host Charlie Ray we've had uh We've run into him on few
8:46
occasions at special events and stuff nice uh nice uh individual nice guy yeah
8:52
uh very um does a you know a a great job of uh of doing the show has for a number
8:57
of years but uh I I guess he's not that old well there's he's not as old as us
9:03
that's for sure well well who is maybe dir true man and I are pretty close the
9:11
counts and I are pretty close she's she's in that running year old um but anyways um yeah so we wish him the best
9:18
of luck I understand did we not try and contact him I did try to reach out he wasn't that interested in coming on but he didn't want to come on the show no oh
9:26
we wanted to have on to announce it cuz he didn't make much of an announce no I mean we had Bob isumi on when he retired
9:31
we did that's right so I thought anyways okay well hey Charlie tough tough luck
9:37
Charlie luck goes uh best of luck in your new uh Endeavor whatever that may
9:43
be you're too young to retire so obviously you're going to have to take a job somewhere yeah I wonder what yeah
9:48
that's weird how you'd uh where would you go like if did he have a trade before who knows nobody knows anything
9:54
about Charlie he's like a like a ghost almost an enigma an enigma that's what just didn't know him beforehand we don't
10:00
know him after so there you go what do you think of that now I mean we are the last man standing in that whole the
10:07
outdoor block which started on global uh I think the block itself started about
10:12
30 years ago yeah and um and it got to a point where we had six or seven programs
10:19
all starting ranging from 6:00 a.m. Saturday morning there was quite a run
10:24
there for was all kinds yeah and uh One By One The Block they've been dropping
10:30
off and here we are BL I don't know what to think of it we're the last Lego piece I don't know what to think of it in the
10:36
set buddy so uh I don't know if I so have you heard that Maro isumi show is
10:41
done too then okay it's no longer on global wow on global on global right so
10:48
so on global television network um Saturday mornings at 8:00 a.m. will be
10:53
the fishing Canada show that will be surrounded by infomercials apparently all the time
11:00
slots were purchased by infomercial so we may be uh uh you know between a
11:06
doctor hose a special little uh foot machine
11:11
there and uh and I don't know what else uh there's all kinds of influential so well this could be it might be good for
11:18
us if there was if there was fans that were on the you know on the edge of the fence for us maybe I like them now but
11:24
they like Charlie well now they don't have the only thing they got is us so nooice they got no choice by default we
11:29
win by high five man high five nice thank you Charlie you're nice
11:35
guy you never know it's going to be weird I mean is and then and then what
11:40
happens if and when the fishing Canada show if it well we're not going to even say that but what would what would happen that Global would have zero
11:46
fishing shows on their outdoor block that would just be weird yeah but it's a
11:52
sign of the times I think uh the you know YouTube is is taking its fair share
11:57
of that oh yeah we will continue to do what we do for as long as we can how's that yeah for
12:04
assurances get these young guys involved a little more you know what I mean to keep the ball rolling too why not right
12:10
all right so what we're going to do now we're we're going to do the rest of the show is going to be basically Q&A I like
12:16
you asked and we will answer uh but to be the Master of Ceremonies for the Q&A
12:23
and asking the questions of us we thought we would bring in a very very very old uh and dear friend of the shows
12:32
he uh is none other than Mr Claus himself Santa come on in how are you
12:41
Santa come on there you go Santa hi Santa hello MD
12:49
how are you how are you you're looking good buddy you look younger last year you looked older you you're looking good

13:17

13:22
there you go look at you look at that guy hey oh that goes on the ears not on
13:28
your on eyes in the backa maybe we can get you to give Santa a hand here how's that you need to get on camera I think
13:34
he's got it you got it Beau you hear his Nick s there you go
13:41
Nick Bubba wasn't jumping at the opportunity is still not jumping right
13:46
Bo doesn't listen a very naughty boy this year Bo's not getting is he going to get any good present Cent or is a
13:53
little coal not even getting coal no I got some dog poop in my backyard you can put in the stocking if you want
13:59
well yeah we'll talk about that after okay buddy all right very good all right
14:04
Santa start us away buddy okay this comes from Hayden Walters in
14:10
Mano oh it's got to be cold there right now oo baby he wants to know do wild
14:15
fishing game ever make it to your table for Christmas dinner wow wow that's a a
14:22
great question um I can tell you that game for sure I think uh pretty much
14:30
every Christmas I try and have something involving game whether it's it's you know wild boar or bison uh I have a
14:38
special one for this year I can't quite divulge it uh at this point but we will be talking about it after Christmas I
14:45
guarantee you okay uh it's going to be um it's it's going to be quite the uh
14:50
better than that triage you did the other last time well that had that had wild boar uh wild boar jow uh in it for
14:57
no I met the the three bird tree oh the turkey and the chicken de bone oh no
15:04
this is not as that that was like a major event okay so no no no this is just a little I'm coming to your house
15:10
for Christmas buddy cuz you're always welcome we always have turkey and I love turkey but tury thanksgiv it's turkey at
15:19
Christmas too I'm telling you it's it's the I like turkey but maybe wild turkey if we could
15:25
have wild turkey have you ever had wild turkey yeah I had it once it was really it's really good really put it in a deep
15:30
fryer and and oh my God Santa have you had wild turkey I don't know oh you need
15:36
a lot of things in the North Pole true that's true I don't really Mrs Claus deals with all that stuff and the elves
15:43
go and get the food for sometimes it's better not to know right I don't think I want to know have you ever cut up a
15:48
reindeer steak Santa o Santa Won't elaborate much
15:55
further Santa got hungry one time were very rough time even in the North Pole
16:01
Merry Christmas you filthy animal boy so no for me and yes for an Hayden's
16:07
question is Wild game or no wild fish or nothing nothing all right we are so down the tunnel vision wow and I mean it's
16:15
it's it's a family thing it's been a family thing and it still is a family thing so I let them uh do their thing do their thing and I just help with
16:22
whatever I can and uh I carve the turkey every year and uh and eat it there you go there's nothing wrong with that Mr Mo
16:29
thank you Santa thank you Santa okay Lawrence Bandy from Ontario wants to
16:36
know what species is use the S whoa Santa can't read today I know Santa's
16:43
missing his glasses at the oh I see I thought maybe Santa you know participated in a little bit of a high
16:50
test on the way in no that's after the show right s get back to the North
16:56
Pole Lawrence wants to know what's species is the use of scent most
17:01
important and which would really benefit the most when it isn't really used where
17:07
and which would benefit the most where it is isn't really used so if it's not used sort of typically maybe you could
17:14
up it up I think that's what Lawrence is saying I don't know Lawrence what species is the use of scent most most
17:20
important the use not the use like I said Santa's having trouble
17:26
today and which benefit most when it isn't really used you know like like
17:32
maybe Musky fishing for instance mus how much you know not too many guys use scent in Musky fishing I don't think
17:38
which which fish would you benefit from using scent and which ones does it not really matter okay all right all right
17:45
all right well yeah we our Let's uh let's uh let's say this
17:55
um that's the part I'm confusing with the question does he want want to know which fish use scent meaning their own
18:03
ability to smell is the use of is the use be using scent for some fish and
18:09
should you not really use it for other fish so one like an odd species of fish but I've I've done it before and Angel's
18:15
done it before is Catfish where the scent the scent issue is huge you need to put a chicken liver down there ni
18:22
right fresh or even stinkier stinkier better chicken liver down there and they will pick that scent up from you know I
18:28
don't know miles away but hundreds of feet away they can pick that scent up so that's a fish species for sure that
18:34
sturgeon would be another one sturgeon would be another one that is very similar uh to to Channel Cats or catfish
18:41
MH and that all has to do with the environment they live in those fish live in generally uh in an environment where
18:47
the visibility factor is zero and if they don't have the ability to smell their way through through defining food
18:53
then they don't eat so they've developed an incredible scent I think catfish might have uh the strongest um ability
19:01
to smell of just about any other freshwater gamefish apparently eels have a great sense of smell as well and
19:08
obviously shark and saltwater shark we've heard stories about shark and you know I don't know how many and Dean has
19:14
something here it says as far as 500 miles is written I I've only heard like a mile or two but if they can s sent
19:21
something at 500 miles that is beyond incredible like I can't even fathom that it's unreal but what I did learn from
19:27
this how far is Sue St Marie from here about 500 miles would that be that's a
19:33
that's a it's a solid 30 minutes by sleigh is that would have took
19:39
you for everyone to know I want to get on that sigh instead of driving the truck up there every time
19:45
man um I got very quickly I wrote I found I didn't write this this is not my stuff but this is a some negative some
19:51
neutral and some positive scents for fish okay so in the negative what do you
19:57
want to hear negative neutral or positive first oh let's go negative let's get that out of the way human skin
20:03
oil Els serin swein yeah bad nicotine bad petroleum and derivatives gasoline
20:09
motor oil bad suntan lotions bad bug repellants bad chemical this is a weird
20:15
one chemical plasticizers added to soften Plastics that one is weird because we use soft Plastics and it's
20:22
plasticol that they use to make that stuff wow so I don't know put that one there that's kind of weird I'll have to make sure the elves don't use that in
20:28
this year's Christmas making it's they might be snorting that stuff up Santa you watch those guys cuz they get
20:34
they're pretty bored the rest of the year so just SC those and then perfumed smoke soaps are the are the last one in
20:40
that one in the neutral category so the fish don't care about this I guess one's
20:46
surprising here and and I'm going to leave it to the end because you'll be surprised at this alcoholic beverages natural vegetation like grass and leaves
20:53
human human urine is one that's quite surprising as as a neutral no kidding chlorinated water uh soda pop juices and
21:02
uh non-perfumed soap and biodegradable detergents but the one that's neutral that I always thought was positive is
21:09
anise oil of anise anise oil it's posor yeah what do you mean it's neutral they said they're putting it they're saying
21:15
that it doesn't they don't fish don't care about it is what they're saying wow this website that's weird it's been a
21:21
it's been a scent forever forever for sure yeah I used to use it right out of the bottle yeah exactly we you and I
21:27
used well we did in the St Lawrence River we carried bottles of it with us under and it never stopped the fish but
21:32
maybe it didn't matter to maybe maybe we would have caught more we would have won the Derby if we didn't use that exactly
21:39
okay and the positives fish extracts including Herring oil Bait fish guts
21:44
fish slime they have an aster there I didn't look it up but there's got to be some slimes that are probably better than others natural bait like worms
21:50
stuff blah blah blah milk and some dairy products such as cheese is a positive
21:58
stinky cheese and the last one human saliva so you should just dip it in your
22:05
mouth and then cast it out that's interesting that's really interesting
22:11
these guys I remember one thing you and I did a while ago and then we stopped for some reason because it was just too much damn work is why we stopped but you
22:18
remember um are we licking our worms making them even better you remember uh
22:23
Coleman had the oh yeah yeah the machine
22:30
that would allow you to it was a marinating deal oh and and but it worked
22:36
on on that uh vacuum a vacuum sealer the vacuum sealer but then you you had a
22:42
marinating uh dish right that you could put product in in their in their case
22:48
you put meat in there whatever and then you stick the hose to it and it would draw all of the juices into the meat mhm
22:56
so we said if that's the case we did that at Hasty we did yeah if
23:02
that's the case if we just get a whole bunch of minnows Andor worms Andor
23:07
crayfish Andor anything that bass will eat and grind them up and put it in the
23:14
marinator and then put our baits in the marinator and turn it on and get it to
23:20
suck all those juices into the baits it ought really work good and we did it man
23:26
was that a messy project awful Pro it was terrible especially him he's OCD and anything cleanly clean and all that and
23:33
all his guts was everywhere but the worst part was that we did it on
23:38
probably the best Bass Lake on the planet where you could it didn't matter you could pour some of those things that
23:46
are netive stuff there some gasoline along with some sweat and a bit of nicotine after cig matter it don't matter because the fish are going to
23:52
bite anyway so we said wow this works really good yeah no kidding and we
23:58
stopped real quick was done with it was done it was done so so yeah uh the one
24:04
thing that there's a couple things that fish we'll go quickly on this that fish use to their advantage in smelling the
24:10
one for feeding is they're called amino acids everybody's probably heard amino acids they're the the elements that make
24:16
up proteins and that's what they use they'll if they're feeding on crayfish constantly they learn Amo the amino
24:22
acids in crayfish and they'll stay on that they'll oh I can smell that and they're kind of keen to that the other
24:27
thing fish smell and this is an interesting one it's pheromones and it's and it's only pheromones amongst each
24:33
other so large moth can only smell their large M phermones muskies only smell the
24:39
muskies phermones they don't smell the other fish's phermones from what I've been reading on anyways or learned throughout my life and and one of the
24:46
big things with that is if a bass got hit by a Musky and he had an open wound
24:53
or an injury the other bass sent that open wound that open wound and say uh oh something's wrong to leave take cover
24:59
get out of here yeah that's pretty cool eh and think about that because you and I have debated about this issue well
25:07
more so I did with Reno all those years I was fishing tournaments with him debating the issue
25:13
of if we're if we're practicing catch and release today and we're on a school
25:19
of fish and we start releasing fish into that school are we sending a signal out
25:25
to that school of fish hey get the hell out of here because I just got caught
25:31
and luckily I don't know what happened but they put me back here but we need to run so let's just say you you hook that
25:36
fish he's got a little bleeding coming over nothing damaging to the fish but those other fish can smell that exactly
25:42
so really releasing fish on top of fish is probably not a good idea correct we do that all the time we do it all the
25:49
time all the time when you think about it one other quick thing sand before I know you want to move on you you got a
25:55
you got an appointment or something I go get the toys ready oh okay well hang on before you go there this is the part I
26:01
found most interesting about this write up um that uh Dean provided Us in this
26:07
in terms of scent and that is about salmon that returned to their uh
26:13
paternal streams where they were originally born imprinted right from
26:19
well we we've been calling it imprinting and imprinting but it's actually a scent and so from thousands of miles mhm
26:28
these fish obviously for whatever reason start heading towards that stream or
26:35
that that trickle of water that they were born in originally because they can smell it it's crazy how how does that
26:42
work how do it work right Dean how does that work I don't know I read that and I put it in there cuz I I didn't know that
26:48
I didn't either but how do they know that like how does anyone know that well how do the people know that how does
26:54
people stud I was trying to look into it and I couldn't really find how do they prove that right the biologist well Santa you should know the answer to
26:59
that question you know everything right I've been around a long time yeah I haven't decided to study salmon all that
27:06
much oh what are you studying you eat salmon Santa milk and cookies are the main
27:12
diet by the way she's pretty good Santa maybe you might time to think to to change that you know here's something
27:18
with my the way my belly is Mr you're getting there oh thank you I want to be
27:24
you when I grow up I've told you that from the beginning of time you got that fabulous had in the exactly how do you
27:29
Italian say a fugazy beard
27:35
so what one more very quickly one more thing Dean had written down here is that
27:40
a salmon they call it almost a super Supernatural sense of smell they can detect when a man sticks his hand or
27:45
human we'll say human sticks their hand in the water 100 feet Upstream so 100 feet up put your hand in the water take
27:52
it out salmon once it gets down there the S I think that's supposed to be down oh if the human is stream and the scent
27:58
goes Downstream 100t that's pretty good too think about that so I mean you're releasing other salmon of course the
28:05
phon from that Sal it's going down you might as well not be anything you better keep going up work your way Upstream
28:11
because you're ain't going to get anything Downstream so there goes there goes Joe for his little Christmas break
28:16
have a Merry Christmas Joe yeah yeah yeah he goes you got some good gifts
28:22
line up for Joe sna Joe was an okay kind of guy this year oh good you good very
28:27
amount of Christmas breaks cuz cuz last year he wasn't a good boy that's pretty sure he learned he learned
28:37
[Music] good there's an adventure just outside
28:42
these walls it's something you'll hate to leave and can't wait to get back to it's a place where memories are made and
28:49

29:17
call how did a Small Town sheet metal mechanic come to build one of Canada's most iconic Fishing lodges I'm your host
29:25
Steve NS Wiki and you'll find find out about that and a whole lot more on the

29:43
great people share their stories of our trials tribulations and
29:49
Inspirations learn and have plenty of laughs along the way Meanwhile we're sitting there bobbing along trying to
29:55
figure out how to catch a bass and and we both decided one day we were going to be on television doing a fishing show my
30:03
hands get sore a little bit when I'm reeling in all those bass in the summertime but that's might be for more
30:08
fishing than it was punching from you so confidently you said hey Pat have you
30:13
ever eaten a drum find Diaries of a lodge owner now on Spotify Apple
30:18
podcasts or wherever you get your podcast all right let's go to number
30:24
three Santa Steven Dy what's to know what's your favorite where Ste from he's
30:29
from Alberta thank you Santa sorry he wants to know what your favorite goto Christmas
30:36
movies wow I don't have a Christmas movie but I always have loved Rudolph
30:41
the show just Rudolph with the clay animation it's just it's the best of all best I can't I still watch it to this
30:48
day I just it's so good I just love it I just love it I'll let him know that you're a fan when I get back thank you
30:55
Cornelius too I like Cornelius he was cool the kondik gold mine guy
31:01
there what about you Mr VI well that one would certainly be at the top of my list
31:07
but uh I am a fan of uh Chevy and the uh the Christmas uh vacation is is like
31:14
it's that's good that's very out this and it's a type of movie that you can go back every year and and it's just as
31:21
funny and even though you know what's coming up you know every line is just one of those funny CH how about you Sant
31:28
well I'm you I'm a star in most of these movies so it's hard to pick from them bias right you can't be unbiased Al I
31:36
there's nothing wrong with How the Grinch Stole Christmas you like that wow that's like a nightmare for you isn't it
31:42
it's you know I watch to prepare every year in case he tries something yeah good thinking good thinking defensive
31:49
role yeah yeah I that although my elves have told me that sometimes you're
31:54
called The Grinch well I've been called and I would like to know why that is I have no idea I have absolutely no idea
32:02
Santa we the rest of the crew will have a meeting with you afterwards when Mr Bola goes home just me out afterwards
32:09
okay buddy we'll have a nice cold beer by your sleigh Dean what uh what's your favorite Christmas movie probably It's a
32:16
Wonderful Life old one but uh yeah I'd say that's probably it okay is there a least favorite for anybody cuz I have
32:23
one what's that I don't like elf no I was Will Ferell is just just and that
32:29
one I like will at times sometimes I don't but that elf movie I just didn't how about Scrooge how about Scrooge I
32:35
like Scrooge that was a good movie that was a good movie the real the original the original that was a good one too Co
32:42
is going to be sad hearing that you don't really like him really oh boy he's
32:47
a very jolly little elf though he's not that little he's not a little he's a big jelly big elf that's for sure we don't
32:54
make fun of Buddy's size anymore no that's yes I know that one Santa thank you for spreading the word on that
33:01
you're a good man thank you next now Michael Hall from Ontario Ontario onario oh boy it's a
33:09
long one Michael wants to know do fish that
33:15
prey on other fish taste different than those who eat plants or insects in
33:20
landbased species of Wolf's meat would be considered stringy and gross compared to the meat of a cow or is fish meat
33:28
just softer all around so there's not that much a difference I I I know this is kind of
33:36
spooky but I was up most of the night I couldn't sleep thinking about things and
33:42
honestly this has nothing to do with this question but I'm right now going through a Deja Vu moment because I ask
33:48
myself this very question through the night and I'm serious I'm not kidding
33:53
you now I know it's weird but my question was to myself why is it that with the odd exception vaa being one of
34:01
them why is it that we as humans we
34:07
eat animals that are vegetarians we do not as a rule eat
34:15
animals that are carnivores and I tried to go through my mind in the mammal world not in the fish
34:21
world not except underwater this was this whole the premise that I was going through was except under under water
34:27
it's the exact opposite so I I I was asking myself all right there's got to be some exceptions to the rules and I was going through all of the meats that
34:34
we eat and with the odd exception and it wouldn't be considered a carnivore it
34:42
would be more of a what do they call S om omnivore thank you would be maybe a
34:49
bear which which the odd time will eat meat very very not I won't say the odd
34:54
time when the opportunity arises but as a as a preference it would be a
34:59
vegetarian berries and it just uh and I could not think of a single meat that we
35:06
eat that would be considered a carnivore I've gone to Florida now once a year
35:12
most of my life and I can say they eat a lot of Gator down there they do eat a
35:18
lot of Gator Gator tail there' be one good very big carnivore good I don't
35:23
like alligator in Mountain line I don't know if have you guys had Mountain line no it's
35:29
really good really yeah it's really good I think they're pure carnivores I think
35:34
yeah for sure and say same with gators so there's two okay but they're both of
35:40
those are very rare and and you don't the majority of people are not even exposed to Meats from those animals
35:47
right the meat that we eat predominant are vegetarians except
35:53
underwater and it's totally reversed underwater we eat carnivores but we
35:59
don't generally like to eat plant eaters as a rule right isn't that weird I swear
36:05
I thought about this all night last night that's weird all night Clairvoyant you are Clairvoyant I don't know and
36:11
then I see this ring here kresan you're kresan I'm telling you and you weren't preparing for the podcast ahead of time
36:17
looking at the like the thing I sent you have you met an exactly who's he talking
36:22
about what are you talking about Buddy he is the Winger of all Wingers Jo Joe's hey Merry Christmas Merry Christmas
36:28
buddy you and all those little lves in there with you hey oh Jo Joe and elves
36:36
there's a whole story there let's not even go there but yeah so anyway so so um this is an interesting question and
36:43
now here's here's another one then into the Fish World U for Michael and
36:48
us there is a difference to me there is a difference between Farm fed salmon and
36:55
wild salmon and and Hatchery raised trout and wild trout and I know our fish
37:01
the wild fish do eat more but they still eat bugs and everything else but they're more eating fish too right they eat like
37:08
salmon they're just Carnivor wives like crazy and they taste better than a farm
37:13
than this perfect food that they give these and a lot of the food that they're given is derivatives of um plants plants
37:22
exactly that's that's the deal right so and you can taste the difference you can taste it every oh without question for
37:28
sure no question yeah so anyways it's a it's a fascinating subject I'm uh tired
37:33
of it a little bit cuz I've been hiding all night but uh I don't know what else we can add to this but it is a great
37:40
observation that we do definitely yeah um I bet you Michael's question has open
37:45
up a lot of eyes just listening right now they're what fish do we eat that would be considered plant eaters oh I
37:52
don't think we have carp if you ever ate carp would be the one even the MLL
37:59
small sector of white fish they eat insects mostly is that yeah they eat a lot of insects white fish is pretty it'
38:06
be hard to eat a fish that doesn't eat meat cuz how would you catch them yeah you got to catch them on something
38:11
they're chasing yeah unless you're a fly fisherman like you yeah but even that kind of is a bug make it carnivorous
38:18
it's not meat turkey not a carnivore but they eat a lot of bugs yeah so yeah H
38:25
it's a good one very interesting to note now question number five is Michael
38:31
Hana from Michigan Michigan nice I love hearing a
38:36
Michael wants to know what do you guys think about drowning your Christmas trees in a lake after the holiday season
38:44
is over I'm going to get in trouble on this one Michael don't do it it's not
38:50
very I don't like seeing and you know I have to go put your name in the naughty list and don't put your trees in Michael
38:56
saying he's seen it done he didn't say he's done it I'm just warning Michael to not do it
39:02
yeah um first of all I do I don't know for a fact but I do
39:09
believe it is illegal and certainly in some parts some jurisdictions I've tried to look into it and from what I could
39:15
tell there it is illegal what I back in the day I don't know if it's changed now but it's what we're talking about in case people don't list realize this but
39:22
is taking your old Christmas trees or any kind of brush they call it brush piles and taking some an and dropping them down in the lake somewhere for fish
39:30
habitat and then you can go back to that you mark it with your GPS you go back to that and you fish that area but you're doing that you know is it legal or is it
39:36
illegal I think it's illegal in most places I think it is anyways from what I've I don't see why though I don't
39:43
either I mean it's organic it's it's helping it's helping the fish because
39:49
you're building a good solid habitat for them cover for them you're putting that
39:54
that tree in the middle of maybe off of a weed bed where there's otherwise would' never have fish but now they have
39:59
a stopping point where all the little bugs are eating the algae and I will admit to having done that on several
40:06
occasions get the hell out of here on several occasions you got them marked on the GPS B the problem was was it illegal
40:11
for me to fish your brush piles cuz you put them in there the problem was that it was preg GPS days right oh yeah so
40:19
what we had to do is triangulate oh yeah I know about a little little little
40:24
scope triangulate with where the spot was and good luck mhm finding that
40:31
finding that brush I probably sank about I'm going to say 10 or 15 brushes in my
40:37
in my time and we did it not through the ice which is the smart thing to do if you were going to do it if it was legal
40:44
in other words place them exactly where you want them on the ice and let nature do its business when it melts and
40:49
they'll fall through no we did it in the Open Water uh period
40:55
pre-season and and then had to try and figure out where they were based on
41:01
landmarks that we saw on Shore and triangulate oh my God it was how was the
41:07
uh how was the old OCD clean the clean boat OCD working after those days you
41:12
must have went insane I could just see you going oh my God needle
41:19
pinec uh Dean Dean here question for Dean maybe he knows this yes putting
41:25
leaving a Rush a Christmas tree on the ice is that illegal on top of the ice you need a permit from the M&R I I
41:32
looked it up so in Michigan where this question was from you need a permit regardless in Ontario I think only the
41:39
M&R can do it so so they'll take a like a donation I think on Simco when I was there last year I saw a bunch out there
41:46
and they were all managed by the M&R did you mark them for us uh yeah I did okay
41:51
yeah I have them yeah I don't see why it would be an issue at all I really don't I guess if if people were doing it
41:57
everywhere would you run into an issue like every year there's hundreds of trees going it'd be better habitat for
42:02
fish yeah right cuz that tree is going to attract all kinds of uh food starting
42:08
with zup Plankton and vertebrates and everything are going to attract to that tree which means that you're going to
42:14
have all kinds of minnows and perch and stuff around it which means you got Predators it's just what if you drop the
42:19
tree on some fishies they're pretty uh they're pretty they're pretty slimy they can get out of
42:25
there on the tree that then gets into the water you forgotten some of your
42:31
ornaments yeah exactly those lights drop those lights down there got something else in the
42:36
water fish we're responsible we we could clean that stuff off Santa we wouldn't we wouldn't do that I see when you're
42:42
sleeping and I know when you're awake Mr Bowman you're not very responsible I'm not a responsible guy Santa why are you
42:48
so smart Santa damn I can't pull anything I know for I don't know for a
42:53
fact but it has to be legal in certain States because they all plant brush piles off of their docks and they openly
43:00
talk about it all the time you know that the tournament guys oh we found brush pile here and there there and these guys they drop it off their docks for crappy
43:06
fishing right they drop it straight down up the end of the dock and all the crappy come in like that and obviously it sounds like it's legal in certain
43:13
States but that's huh hey that's a good question to look into if we could play Santa you need to get us some elves
43:20
looking on that soon as soon as after Christmas when they got a little bit of time on their hands right thank you
43:25
Michael Michael from from Michigan thanks for listening too Michael appreciate that we'll check it out and
43:30
now we have a Peter West house from onio he wants to know what is the most
43:37
important quality you look for in a fishing lodge or ELO there you go I can
43:44
answer that one real quick got porcelain I look for porcelain most important
43:50
criteria porcelain that's it if it's got porcelain it's I I I'm interested I I
43:57
start looking further into it if it's got no porcelain unfortunately I've gotten to a point in my life where I'm
44:05
not really interested there's too many good options with porcelain that are available to me I'm sorry for if there's
44:13
a lodge owner out there listening that does not have porcelain uh I'm sorry it doesn't mean you're you're your
44:19
operation isn't worthy or viable I just don't go to it Santa but what of uh it's
44:26
not porcelain but it's a little cooler than porcelain it's got a little flame
44:31
in it a little incinerator toilet but see but see Santa that to me is
44:36
porcelain because the the structure itself much is porcelain he's talking what Santa's talking about the new craze
44:43
now called the actually it's called the Cinderella I just found out that's called brand the brand is Cinderella
44:50
them in the workshop for the elves there you go right cuz they must really uh and all the pipes free up
44:57
there easier now Santa when you're flying uh 5,000 yard above the uh this
45:03
building right now and you got to take a poop what happens I fly over top of your house Mr Bowman is that what I thought
45:09
that was I thought that was dog [ __ ] in my backyard it's yours Santa poops wow
45:15
okay Santa when you feel that shotgun blast coming back at you you're going to feel something I'm going to put a good
45:21
lead on you so um aside from porcelain which is important I'm not joking it's
45:27
important to me and it might be important to a lot of people out there but you know if not then so be it I'm
45:32
not a big ouse guy anymore I've done it for way too many over the 40-year career
45:38
and uh so I would like to have something a little more civilized but aside from that um you know I'm more into the most
45:45
of these Lakes from a fishability standpoint are are all good if it's an outpost especially uh chances are real
45:53
good doesn't get a lot of fishing pressure so the we do a bit of research and and homework on it in terms of the
45:58
fishery itself but for the most part that kind of looks after itself so then the only left are Creature Comforts I
46:05
mentioned one U but but you know I once again I I I I want to say that this is
46:12
nothing wrong against a real rustic operation a place where where you go
46:18
into and it is truly truly a rustic experience that's all well and good uh
46:24
if we're not shooting a fishing show uh if we're just in there on our own that
46:30
works but when we have to work the number of hours we put in every day some
46:36
of those Creature Comforts are important man I mean aside from a washroom uh running water as simple as simp thing
46:44
like running water that's huge that's absolutely huge even if it's Lake water it doesn't matter yeah I'm not talk from
46:52
the lake AB I'm not talking about about about drinking water I'm talking about running water so that you can just do
46:57
the berry Essentials we can heat it up on the stove we we'll take a bow pot of that and heat it up on the stove but
47:02
yeah but you know so you can clean some of the food off of your plates and and and and wash stuff I mean yeah that's
47:09
really important to me that's a big one for sure I have one as well and I only picked this up after working here but if
47:15
you go on the website and there's no pictures of the fish alive oh you're probably in
47:21
trouble and that's one we actually come across a lot yeah so that's something to keep stringers yeah Dean's talking about
47:28
fish on stringers you know when a fish is alive and released alive that Walle he's got his fin sticking up and they're on the water they're not you know
47:34
they're nowhere near that's not behind you right there you're holding that in front of that hey everybody look at me
47:39
you know what I mean so um L88 Lodge 88 right there buddy I love Lodge 88 there
47:45
a porcel there isn't there oh my God they take porcelain to hold new anyway
47:51
so I agree like I I agree the running water is huge um it's nice to have comfortable bed dis like the mattress
47:58
has got to be at least a little bit comfortable you don't like a slab of plywood with a piece of foam on it no I
48:03
like a nice foam if it's a nice piece of foam I I'll take that as long as I can you know it's comfortable it's not like it's going to scrunch down to the
48:09
plywood you're going to feel like you're on the plywood so that kind of stuff and the way I judge it if I was going to go
48:14
fishing with my buds me and Mikey burst and my boys are going to go up the better the fishing is less I care about
48:22
whatever if it's going to be phenomenal if it's going to be style fishing that that little Outpost cab that he has in
48:29
there if it's going to be like that kind of fishing I'll just I'm going to eat and sleep in the cabin and I'm going to fish all day and just catch them all day
48:35
long he has right there how did he have that had it lined up I know ahead of time what you guys are going to say wow
48:40
you're as good as sand a couple things a couple tricks for you to this by the way
48:47
this operation takes the Outpost cabin concept to an entirely different level
48:56
so so yes this is perfect but it's certainly not representative of an outpost Camp well he's got the little
49:02
Outpost Camp there we went into but even then but but you got a plane you got a plane park right there the that they're
49:08
the only Outpost camp where you have a gymnasium where you had an actually built they built a set of D barbells and
49:13
dumbbells and oh my God it was good so but yeah the better the fishing the more I can put up with I would deal with but
49:19
but I like that ice in between you know you can get some good fishing with some work and then have the amenities of running water that running water
49:26
that's a huge one for sure all does have to be hot although hot and cold is nice it's better but you but you can heat it
49:32
up if you want to if if you need warm water but running water I don't understand how you can run an operation
49:39
in today's uh uh world without running water at the camp that one Steve and I
49:45
went up to makoka batan the camp was you know it was typical Camp Outpost Camp you know not certainly not pristine or
49:51
whatever but what he had there he had uh starlink to get so if we wanted the
49:58
internet or whatever to talk we I was texting Lisa I think we could even talk on the phone there and he had running
50:05
water Waters you could have a shower in there you just go in and have a nice hot shower wow you know what I mean that's pretty much all we needed and after that
50:12
a barbecue we had a stove and we had all that stuff but but the running water was was so huge to be able to take a shower
50:18
in that cuz that's that you get kind of rank after about four or five days in there without showering and all that
50:24
stuff you men men something I know everybody's going to poo poo me on this one but but I don't rank connectivity
50:31
that high up on the list to be uh I do think that um some form of um
50:41
communication for emergencies yeah you need a garment or or the somehow you need something yeah something for but I
50:47
I'm not that big on having to have the connectivity yeah yeah I get you well
50:52
you know I had to make a lot of those new conductivity things at the elves these days yeah yeah you probably deal a
50:59
lot with that don't you Santa uh it's becoming more and more of a necessity can you communicate with Mrs Claus when
51:04
you're 5,000 mil up pooping on my house she knows she knows she know she knows
51:09
oh boy she's good isn't she Mrs Claus scares me on a good day
