0:04
uh Joel Shelli was on the program and he was talking to us about all these weird
0:10
uh subspecies of fish that are not really like that he's fishing and having
0:15
a wonderful time with most people you know totally that from that conversation
0:20
he said you guys ought to have on this guy he's a buddy of mine his name is Tyler winter he is the king of all
0:29
things abnormal in terms of sport fishing world and I just started fishing wherever I could and I was fishing in a
0:37
ditch in southern Minnesota middle of cornfield and fishing for CP fishing for
0:43
whatever I could and I caught a fish that I had no idea what it was it was a moai and it was bright silver it had
0:50
teeth on its tongue it came jumping out of the water and I didn't know what it was none of my uncles who knew
0:57
everything knew what it was and that fish convinced me that there were still
1:03
Mysteries even in the ditches in Minnesota most of the game fish that we
1:08
deem to be sporty are also a very good table fair I can't say that for a whole
1:16
lot of these coar fish um uh they're just a little bony but of
1:22
course if you don't like bones in your food you can always have tofu um well said
1:39

Put Another Log in that fire kid come on now well look at us we got we got the winter clothing on it must be cool here
2:25
give me aell they play a lot with the thermostats in this in this building I have to say the employ es and one of the
2:31
bosses play a lot we should have like a fireplace right here and then we could just literally throw we could throw a
2:36
log on there that would be so nice uh over there's vaa he's I'm not
2:42
sure what he is doing he's in he's in a t-shirt so he's totally different than we are let's see they but he is in
2:48
charge of cameras so whatever Director of Photography yeah he's whatever he's doing it involves he's the do cameras
2:54
and Nikki V look at him he's in the house headon give me got his nice little
2:59
cappuccino with him there oh probably he does look at it talking to somebody on the internet yeah uh and Dino he just
3:06
gave you a look look at that look get that look look at Nick you got to look at Nick right now he has giving you the look that scares me a lot good thing
3:13
you're here beside me to protect me from that here it comes uh wonderful program
3:19
today folks you think you could go Nick you think you can still take them oh yeah really give me a hell oh hell oh
3:27
don't even like it's not even questionable what what would be your
3:33
line of offense total insanity but what what happens when you
3:39
gas out of the insanity I won't but that's the beauty of the Insanity part when you put yourself in that mode you
3:46
don't gas out would it be and Nick knows that wrestling oriented or stand up
3:51
fighting Orient whatever comes next fting KCK to the nuts I'm not really KCK
3:57
to the nuts always works in a a young guy like that big young guy like that right so my problem is I can't reach
4:03
down too high to kick I'll hold you up to him sorry about that uh welcome to the
4:09
show wonderful episode as per usual a very interesting fascinating guest and a
4:15
wonderful subject matter it was referred to us a few weeks ago on a podcast that
4:20
we did with Joe Sur Melly for those of you who remember do we know what number that episode was by the way um well
4:26
we're recording episode two ago yeah episod ago one episode ago episode two
4:31
ago one two there you go uh Joel Shelli was on the program and he was talking to us
4:38
about all these weird uh subspecies of fish that are not really sportu like
4:44
that that he's fishing and having a wonderful time with most people you know totally IGN them from that conversation
4:50
he said you guys ought to have on this guy he's a buddy of mine his name is Tyler winter he is the king of all
4:59
things abnormal in terms of sport fishy world I love it all things abnormal he
5:06
is the director uh uh at Native fish for tomorrow um and they've got a native
5:13
fish bill that they're trying to move through uh that proposes it's in Minnesota proposes a to Define native
5:21
rough fish category of fish as 26 species so I guess right now there is no
5:27
native and there isn't we know that for a fact here in Canada you know even there's a strong fishery for common cart
5:33
but they're not a game they're not even a game fish so therefore when they're not game Fish means nobody can put rules and regulations on them and it's kind of
5:40
a weird deal so this Tyler witer who's joined us in a few moments he's going to tell us why it's important that we all
5:47
sort of get on the bandwagon to start looking at these species well you know what anything we've ever caught that was weird odd and different we've had fun
5:54
with you and I both we've been an experienced together and separate you know what I mean that you could think can you think of a noname fish that you
6:03
would if if given the opportunity that you would not want to yeah not really no
6:10
no the ones that I've caught were great I mean they fight like crazy a dog fish is a perfect example of bothin perfect
6:16
example those things are insane you those things are you catch them just like when you're bass fishing using bass
6:21
tactics so why wouldn't that be a viable game fish and that's know Dean maybe
6:26
maybe we what we could do is find who is it who's in charge out there
6:34
that makes the definition game Fish work in other words somebody has come up with
6:40
that moniker and said all right in order to be in order to be in this club you
6:47
have to have or do or look or whatever I'm a large B the club exactly I want to
6:54
know who that that person is get them on the show I want to find out well it's provincial for sure because
7:00
it changes from Province to Province right so like certain things that might be a game Fish here aren't elsewhere
7:05
give me an example do you have I think chain Pickel here are sportfish like
7:11
they have regulations I think but in New Brunswick they wouldn't I don't know if
7:16
they do here or not I think so I think KC might but uh I don't think there either I don't think there either I
7:22
thought I've seen CH pickle regulations but I could see personally from what little experience I've had uh um it's a
7:30
federal thing and it's a DFO thing and the provinces can't even we know this
7:36
because Peter and I worked on the carp common carp thing for a number of years
7:41
and um I remember the Ontario &rf people
7:47
were looking at getting it categorized as a sportfish but could not do so without DFO jumping in and saying okay
7:54
let me get my book here all right all right all right I'm signing off on it so
8:00
I think it's a federal thing could be and and uh that's you need to you need
8:05
to dig into this yeah we should because across but across the board if you look at uh KP are in uh Manitoba for sure
8:13
Comm we're talking common carp not to be confused with common carp are in Manitoba they're in Quebec I don't know
8:19
how far east after Quebec they go um they are in BC for sure Vic has told us
8:24
about them there and there's no regs on any of them in any province that we know of so
8:29
yep no or something uh I don't know where he was but Vic said vic Carl guy
8:35
that we know from BC he sent me a video one time and he was kayaking with his wife and in this little swampy area and
8:40
these things were flipping and flopping all over like you know spawning carp do whatever and he said these are car I said no way he said yeah they were
8:47
loaded over here and I don't know what body of water that was but he was definitely in BC he said I never heard that yeah make another note to yourself
8:55
you know Dean you know Christmas is coming we could get one of those dictating Mach maches right where you
9:00
don't have to write anymore you just oh really yeah you turn it on you talk into the mic and it it it records all oh
9:05
that' be great I'll put it on my list make a note um to us reach out to our good old good friend uh Vic Carroll from
9:13
BC yeah get him on the show he's he's fascinating we tried to have him on before did we or have we had him no we I
9:20
think we've had we must have had come on I'm telling you come on now wow I had him on radio I've done radio with them
9:28
but never oh that's yeah that's that's a shame we need Vic on the show we need on the show people just from from sturgeon
9:35
fishing to everything he does oh my God the baits that he used ditch ditch what
9:41
would you call them ditch holigans or Hooligans or whatever they they got all kinds of stuff they're using out there for bait he's got some great stories
9:48
anyways put them on your list yeah I got them uh but but but on this show we're going to be uh speaking to Tyler winter
9:54
here in a few moments who will bring us up to speed on the nons sport fishing
10:00
uh sport of fishing how's that cuz he that's a good name for the show there you go non sport fishing for I don't
10:07
know that'd be a good one wouldn't it before we do any of that though how about uh how about I think
10:16
the 24 season the fishing Canada show I think is pretty much that one we pretty much stabbed that one to death I think
10:22
they should watch that because they need to get caught up for what our new Season's going to be you know what are
10:27
you saying that people aren't watching now no they are I'm saying the 24 season is pretty much in our rearview mirror
10:33
buddy we should be talking about the upcoming 2025 exciting give me a hell
10:39
yeah new season a foot well we're uh we're editing as we there two doors
10:44
there's a guy right next door to us right now that is doing his best to get that beautiful subject uh all preted up
10:50
for us us pretty up so that we can get Wonder uh episod yeah we some great episodes and there's some uh giant Pike
10:56
in Northwest Territories coming up we I did a read for that uh uh show that I
11:01
was unfortunately not there for in frederickton New Brunswick where the whole crew was fishing right right right
11:08
yes kind of got you got called called away on that shoot you did the read
11:13
yesterday did you yeah I did the read yesterday and I was all excited I because I wasn't there and as I'm reading this thing I'm thinking wow this
11:20
is a good episode I'm going to say this is this is a first really yeah for that many hosts co-hosts let's say and you're
11:26
not involved like you're you're going to voice it but uh so you are involved and we do have a piece on the musky stuff in there with you and it but um from 39th
11:35
uh season is a foot I guess what I was trying to say and that is the 2025 old foot that's pretty old foot is it the
11:41
the the 39th consecutive season of broadcast for the fishing candidate show
11:48
which kitties that's something else I could do the math like they say uh last
11:53
year was 38 I can't count but I can sure add that means that not too far down the road is the 40th season
12:01
of so we're going to we're going to film one more year we're going to keep her keep at her for a bit we've got the
12:06
commitment till at least one more wooo one more must be done my friend okay
12:12
there you you heard it first from the boss everybody 40th year so um yeah Special anniversary 40 40th anniversary
12:19
season so at this time one year from today when we're doing a podcast we are going to be hyping the hell out of that
12:26
may be drinking and smoking cigars for all I know oh I'm just saying now you're talking my language I'm just saying I'm
12:32
not sure but you never know there's a lovely CEST walking through the scene speaking drinking and smoking cigars
12:39
yeah speak drinking whiskey and smoking cigars very well put Mr M thank you
12:44
thank you um where was I she's going to she's going to kill me by the
12:49
way uh fishing Canada uh the store shop. fish andcat
12:55
store and the reason I bring that up is because you can see in the background here these two lovely gentlemen uh
13:01
sporting the what is this this is the classic the classics Nick's got to go he's got stuff to do so he's on the road
13:09
again the C us call you Nick okay so she's docking my pay for that Wicked
13:15
slag that I just gave her how much should I take off his check uh so there you go those that's the classic look yes
13:22
now with of course the the Christmas hats and stuff it's a holiday look too that's true for those of you that aren't
13:29
I wish I had worn my Walley fishing Canada Walley yeah I've been telling you
13:35
to wear that one and I didn't even use the picture of it today oh my oh my I have it sitting in I have it sitting in
13:42
in my office we have a failure to communicate on this show my friends anyway I anything I with just a regular
13:50
black T-shirt thinking what the hell all this lovely uh stuff is available on fishing Canada shop. fishing canada.com
13:58
or F canada.com and then just push the store icon top ribbon along with a
14:04
multitude of other products that are how to find small bass too in there right look at those weed types and how to fish
14:10
them wow those guys got a lot of stuff on there I'm still talking about stuff and he's already moved me want to move
14:16
me along yeah cuz I was going to say that all the new stuff is on there Dean all the new uh you haven't even seen the
14:24
they come in today apparently the new species they yeah I'm telling you going
14:29
we're going to have a big ad in the Outdoor Canada magazine come out to show the I haven't even seen that ad is it nice did you do a nice job wonderful
14:36
okay uh because my colleagues were asking me this morning in your absence uh Hey do you think we could have a look
14:42
at the ad that's going on I said everybody saw it Mr Bowman nobody saw it that Mr Bowman is in charge that's a
14:49
bunch of there a bunch of thank you I can only go by what I'm told okay
14:55
so um go to fishing canada.com and you will will see what we're talking about cuz it is all on display there ready to
15:03
go is it up there now uh uh maybe when this comes out it better it really should be obviously it should
15:09
be Nick you got some work to do buddy doing it right now feedback
15:15
listener feedback in response to our fishing Canon episode on the importance of weed growth um is there a name on
15:21
this one no I don't see a name on this one uh Dean Dean busy he was busy he was little
15:29
Ang's on Dean's ass bad today folks just to let everybody know got Ang's got Dean
15:35
like just he's all frazzled now so this was left on a short like a comment on these little short videos we've been
15:41
doing okay would you found this somewhere in a hotel bathroom or something on the wall and you thought
15:47
wow this would make a really was there a phone number was there a phone number involved or
15:52
anything no thank you in response to episode
15:57
importance of weed growth I don't don't know how I ended up here I never there you go that's exactly what I said
16:04
it was on the bathroom wall when I sitting on the I read in the bathroom wall I've never fished with a
16:09
rod and reel oh there's a something different for us for sure but as an
16:15
aquarist aqua aquarist aquarium person OB aquarium person Aquarius aquarist
16:20
aquar aquarist where there's cover there's fish well said and where the plants are is where the crayfish and
16:27
snails are found which in turn would have the apex predator not far from that
16:34
right and we we we talk about that all the time and it's funny that we're making a joke out of this but this is a
16:40
really good point a great statement um for those of you who have aquariums and
16:46
are into fish both salt and fresh waterer everything that we talk about in
16:52
terms of how and when and where to catch fish it that book is available right in
16:58
your Aquarius you just look into that aquarium and everything that we talk about is exactly what's going on study
17:04
your fish and what they do on a daily basis a fish is a fish really and I mean they're some of them have different
17:09
feeding patterns but not a lot you know what I mean they all kind of basically have the same so and they're attracted to the same stuff so that's a good point
17:15
except for the dreaded grass carp he's got a little bit different of feeding uh
17:21
habits that one right that one Speaking of aquatic plants we have a a new a
17:26
message right here brought to you by the invasive species Center nice um and it
17:34
starts off by saying did you know that grasscarp have the potential to negatively impact popular sportfish such
17:40
as northern pike Walley small bass and yellow perch well yes the answer to that is yes of course we all know that we've
17:47
been we've been preaching That Tune now for some time we sure have uh well then
17:53
join the invasive species Center for a grasscarp information session nice
17:59
January 28th of uh two25 two I love that buddy two25 too H
18:08
yeah uh from 6:00 to 900 p.m. at the Windsor Sportsman's Club in obviously
18:13
Windsor Ontario for those of you from that area it might be a real fun evening to go and join up with like-minded folks
18:21
uh talk some fishing but also talk about uh this invasive species we know some
18:26
Windsor boys that'll be there for sure a few of them uh there will be booths uh
18:32
expert presentations and a nice Q&A session uh where you can actually talk
18:38
um and and ask all of those burning questions that you've been sitting on listening to these
18:45
announcements uh you'll have professionals not goons like us who uh actually can you resemble every at least
18:53
we're we're passionate yes we are we're passionate about it not good at reading ads but we no you're because you're
18:59
making it kind of very ad liberal those who attend did you say Ad liberal I said ad
19:06
liberal don't get me started okay right now I'm a little that's a bit of a sore
19:12
point I know I I hear anybody those who attend can enjoy compliment H here you go Dino you might want to take a drive
19:18
down there for this uh can enjoy complimentary food and refreshments I'm there complimentary food and
19:25
refreshments why did you put Dino on the spot you know think about Dino when it's
19:32
he when it's time for Dino to participate in U a right he gets very
19:38
focused all of a sudden did you not notice well dude have you seen the guy he's like he's always working out he's
19:44
always and he's he's eating lowfat uh protein rich foods that don't really
19:49
last a lot in your system so you're out of it quick and you're into the next Hunger phase and and the dude is a I think he's been saying telling you fibs
19:57
because do you know we eat he's the sh too oh Dino likes the shite
20:02
trust me okay Dino just about him and Nick are very similar in Nick Nick R
20:08
wrote rewrote the book on eating the shite for sure it's unbelievable and Nick what I love about Nick though
20:15
is that as he's eating that crap yes as not like after or you know post or pre
20:22
as he's eating it he's telling you that hm I might have gotten food poisoning from something I ate earlier on today
20:28
meanwhile he's shoving carcinogenic uh arsenic filled uh uh casserole dish of
20:37
bacteria into his body yeah I think maybe I E something yeah I
20:43
feel oh God help me poor anyways poor asan Carta people are so for those of
20:51
you who attend you can enjoy wonderful complimentary food and beverage I'm not sure what the refreshments are but uh um
20:59
it's not going to be free booze don't say it's not going to be free boo Nobody Does that not saying are you going to be there Dean because if we if we if we
21:04
knew you were going we could probably an outside and you know that there' be people showing up if you were going I'll
21:10
be there see Dean will be there see wonderful wow boy do we ever make a decision there real quick so din will be
21:16
there as well uh and he will be staying at the uh Clover Leaf Motel just off to
21:21
the side for those of you who might be they changed the name of that not Clover Leaf anymore what is it it's just the as
21:28
the as that's another my second favorite I don't know what it it's not Clover Leaf anymore they changed it I know it a hav
21:34
it's a chain of small uh two room operations um and but hang on hang on I
21:43
mean if that wasn't enough to get you there once we threw Dean in to the mix
21:49
okay if that wasn't enough to get you um for you folks in the Windsor area to get
21:55
you to the Windsor Sportsman's Club sport man club and that once again is
22:01
January 28th of two25 in the New Year if that wasn't
22:07
enough to get you to the Windsor Sportsman Club uh on that evening enough
22:13
being that Dean will be there enough that you'll have complimentary food and refreshments
22:20
complimentary you have a chance to win a Yeti backpack cooler valued at 400 Buck
22:26
AO hell yeah now that's worth it that right there uh-huh come on why not they've been good with that the invasive
22:32
species Center remember they were giving prizes away that last one we went to in bville they give a lot of prizes yeah they're very good at that excellent so
22:39
whether you're a season angler like Mr Bowman um or just starting out um and are passionate about
22:46
protecting Canadian Great Outdoors and great lakes in particular uh take the session in you will enjoy it BR bring a
22:54
friend or a family member too cuz the Anglers know a little more than Maybe the average person does you know they
23:00
don't know about it either but it would be it's it's just good eye opening experience and and learning so and what's nice about it is that you are
23:06
with like-minded folks there's nothing like you know being in a room with people who think like you do yep cuz God
23:14
Only Knows remember that that one we went to all the commercial fishermen were there and they they gave us input that we had never heard before stuff
23:20
like that so these are very informative meetings so come on kitties get that crayon out mark it down is January 28th
23:26
uh who are 25 coming up at 6 uh p.m.
23:32
starts at 600 p.m. and it goes all the way through till 9:00 although I'm sure if it's like the one we attended it'll
23:37
run well past 9:00 because of all the questions and things and it's at the
23:42
Windsor sportsman club we may even I could be wrong Dean but we may now that
23:48
we know that you're going uh we may want to post this somewhere and let people know it's happen we'll post on the
23:54
website for sure so Dino Dino will see you there he'll be the guy at the front when they called they ring the bell and
24:00
they say okay now come up people from the left side of room you can come up and start your the dino will be the
24:05
first one who's at front the line check them out do know rhymes with Reno what's in the news oh Reno was the
24:13
best buffet liner ever he was a line dancer for sure in the news Wy I've seen him body
24:21
check 85y I know you told me about that and I turned around and I said I said no can't be and then I saw the lady laying
24:27
on the floor I holy 85y old woman body check from behind by the way just
24:33
he did not come on I'm telling you you ask him he'll he he's not embarrassed I will say that Reno was never ever the
24:41
last man in a buffet life ever ever ever for seconds for seconds he'd be he'd
24:47
beat other people first with the second okay he was always very close to the like he made it a goal to be the first
24:54
in line he's going to call me you know he's going to call us he's going to kill us Hey Dean Dean get that little
25:00
dictating machine out and and uh record we should get Reno on the show should have Reno we or block all his calls
25:07
because he's going to kill us now we hav on him forever it's been forever maybe we can play back some of these little Clips where we're Mak just he'll kill
25:16
us anyways in the news Because by the way Nick now is he's got a new Duty charge he's marking down all these
25:23
little Clips so that in the future he can just uh he yeah he's putting
25:29
no Nick has been put in charge why did you notice he's got the headset on now Well's got half on look at the other
25:35
half he's got to listen to his peeps on the on the phone right um so now he's
25:41
marking these things down like that comment we just made and said maybe we play it back I've never seen so many um
25:47
facial emotions as Nick in this podcast he's laughing one second he's giving his grandpa the finger the next second just
25:53
give him the pen up the he's he's look at look at him now that on camera right
25:59
there what's in the news Mr Bowman okay uh this is a very
26:04
interesting story and it's going to be concerning to some people for sure uh ourselves included MH uh Walley and
26:11
lakes with zebra muscles have higher mercury levels so a study found another negative effect of invasive Zebra
26:17
muscles in Lakes higher levels of mercury in fish so this is by can I just
26:23
jump in for a moment so we're we're going to make an assumption that all Great Lakes tributaries and connected
26:30
Lakes will be affected by this bulletin right I would say any lakes with zebra muscles I I think Superior still doesn't
26:37
have them right or does it's got cagas yeah it's got It's got it I believe it does not as bad I don't think I think
26:44
yeah I'm not sure it's an anomaly Superior is an anomaly I mean as you see from those uh all two clear films you
26:50
can tell but I think there I think there zebras in Superior is too I thought they're in the in the southern end the
26:56
St Mary's River end of it mhm but anyways researchers from the University of Minnesota the US
27:02
Geological Survey and other agencies studied 21 Minnesota lakes and Minnesota
27:07
is connected to Ontario folks Northwest Ontario if you look at the map you're going to see that we are in a connected
27:12
area and a lot of Great Lakes it covers a lot of Great Lakes uh compared Mercury concentations concentrations in the
27:19
tissues of two species Walley and yellow perch they found that adult Walley in Lakes infested with zebra muscles has
27:26
72% higher Mercury concentration then it Lakes without the Invaders so
27:32
let me do one more with the yellow perch in yellow perch the common pray for Walley the Mercury concentrations were
27:38
157% higher so just to break this down mercury
27:44
in as far as I know is a naturally occurring
27:50
substance that um is found pretty much in all of our waterways to various
27:56
degrees depending on the sub rate of the body water
28:02
but but obviously those Mercury contaminants
28:08
particles are are are are kind of floating around in the water and because Zebra muscles filter the water that's
28:16
how they consume their nutrients all of that's getting trapped in the Zebra muscles and so any fish that eats zebra
28:24
muscles obviously is getting a like a super dose an injection of mercury every
28:30
day well but these guys aren't no so apparently it's not from eating it no they're not they don't eat the zebra so
28:35
I guess they don't so according to this so what's the deal here then yeah so there's a bacteria in the water that
28:41
converts mercury into the form that we can ingest so like it enters the water
28:46
in like its natural pure form and gets converted by bacteria into um methyl
28:53
Mercury right which is absorbed more toxic methyl Mercury yeah um
28:59
absorbed by fish and humans but what's the zebra muscle connection the mats that you see um those create a better
29:06
environment for that bacteria so more gets converted into that methyl Mercury siment the sediment without oxygen
29:13
there's no Oxygen on there and it makes it creates a better uh area for those things to for the Mercury to develop I
29:19
guess yeah you you're getting all that out of that that one article that's brilliant man yeah I'd have never th it
29:27
mhm okay think see the problem is um with guys like us like and Dean included
29:34
you and I and Dean included if we're fishing in Southern Ontario a lot of chances are we're fishing in you know
29:40
the great lakes or connected Waters to the Great Lakes you know start up and zebra muscles every and I and I do eat
29:46
these fish so I got I have to show some kind of concern and the two fish that I eat the most are perch and walleye you
29:51
know what I mean Pike would be next and I'm sure they're probably just about as bad as the rest of them so um we do have
29:56
an article on the website that has some charts that show I think Ontario puts it
30:02
out for each lake or each like area on how many fish they recommend consuming based on the mercury levels in that body
30:08
of water do you remember what they were for Walley it's not so it depends on the size of fish cuz Mercury bio accumulates
30:16
which means the longer it's in the water the more it's eating the higher the concentrations get okay so it depends on
30:22
the size so I think it was like you know if it was you can eat four fish per month that are under eight in it'd be
30:29
like like half a fish per month over 30 in or something okay so a little while
30:35
reason I'm smirking yeah is because a little while ago I went on a walleye
30:43
eating binge and I ate three four meals of walleye within a
30:52
10day period and I'm talking like I chowed down on walleye big fil and they
30:58
were they were they were they were definitely not little 16 in let's put it that way so Pounders probably 3B fish I
31:06
would think well so I Chow Down a lot like a lot meaning twice as much as a
31:12
normal person would consume in a in a single sitting thinking that I was doing
31:20
good because of my food intake being you know nice high protein quality protein
31:25
walleye no batter no nothing it just pure wonderful well apparently and now you're telling me I might have been
31:32
poisoning myself you might be you might have poisoned yourself there but apparently you can detoxify from the
31:38
mercury levels too then it does go it does get out of your it doesn't stay in there forever what's that guyan you that
31:44
story you had I forget his name he was on eating wild podcast but we met him at the Sportsman show right and he said he
31:50
was eating I think he was eating one walleye meal every day for 8 years and
31:56
ended up getting Mercury poing his was so bad where he lost control of like his legs uh his his eyes were starting to go
32:03
like he was getting like some serious like and he still so he thought he might have had like Ms or ALS because it was
32:10
getting that bad and then they did cuz I don't think they'll test your mercury levels unless you ask them right so I
32:17
actually had a CEO come up to me one time cuz when I lived in canora I was eating I was eating walleye every day
32:24
for a few months and a CE came up to me and told me I to get my like like I
32:29
should request to get a test because they said like especially in in that area they'd be concerned yeah I'm going
32:35
to on my next physical when they do blood tests just ask them to you got to pay extra oh they just check it off I
32:41
think you just pay pay for it and uh it would be yeah I got one coming up I got one uh in a few weeks it be interesting
32:48
do it on a or maybe not maybe I don't want to know but after that clinic I put
32:53
on oh my God the symptoms of mercury poison include Tremors insomnia memory loss you and I are good for that one
32:59
neuromuscular effects headaches and cognitive and motor dysfunction so we all have it we're all yeah we're all're
33:05
all diseased oh God but it's interesting and now they have not found the
33:12
science although it's connecting Zebra muscles to this story we don't really
33:19
know why is that correct no they do know that the like the bacteria levels are so
33:25
high in the lake now because of those like the adds of zebra muscles yeah but Zebra muscles aren't the only ones who
33:31
create that that sludgy looking bottom on on on maybe quag muscles maybe what
33:37
else does quag how about freshwater clams have you ever seen certain time of
33:43
year they cover that big a swap like I mean huge well sometimes you look at it
33:48
say holy mael somebody had a had a feast here you know clamed yeah so or or and
33:56
and rocks obviously not qualify uh as that so it's got to be
34:01
something in the zebra muscle shell that is making
34:08
Mercury I think I think it's the sediment itself they're they're they're creating this non oxygenated sediment by
34:15
being so thick in there now and that's the Mercury is somehow pebbly rubbly there's oxygen
34:22
that's oxygen water oxygenated water apparently it's not it's the a non-
34:28
oxygenated water that's uh the key so anyway 72% higher Mercury concentrations
34:34
in those lakes that that says it all that's insane you think about it not a little bit for sure interesting story
34:42
it's going to be a good study to keep our eyes on for sure and and Dean maybe we could have somebody on that might
34:47
know a little bit more about this than that would be awesome than ourselves um somebody's doing somebody
34:56
will will come on from the study I'm sure to give us some the very last line it says as a result W and perch May
35:02
shift their feeding habits nearer to shore where more Mercury is available what does that mean I don't
35:09
know but that's what they left us with oh my God paragraph at the same time filter
35:15
feeding Zebra muscles are sucking nutrients out of the water and depositing them on the bottom as waste
35:21
as a result Walley and perge may shift habits near to shore where more Mercury
35:27
is available I don't know how that means uh all I know is that they are
35:33
delicious yeah it's it's a shame great eating fish and uh we should keep an eye on
35:38
it uh fan question of the week brought to you by the way that story is on fishing canada.com as we speak yep it's
35:46
the whole story not the butchered up version that we just gave you the whole story and nothing but the whole story MH
35:54
uh it's on fish cad.com and while you're there uh don't uh don't be shy look
36:00
around open doors push buttons there's all kinds of good stuff to gra a hoodie
36:05
or two well you could do that too but I don't want to sound like I'm always pushing the schwag I'm not there's all
36:11
kinds ofu is this podcast coming up before Christmas Dean yep just saying just saying no I'll tell you what I I
36:17
was going to say now you throwing me up but go to the contest section
36:22
of.com because uh there is uh Bevy by the way for those of you who've been
36:29
following the boat motor trailer coming up contest uh had some uh good news the
36:37
other day it's uh it's coming up very very soon it's getting motorized I'm
36:42
sorry it's getting motorized it's getting motorized thank you and it's going to be a
36:48
beauty it's all I can tell you mhm a fan question of the week brought to you by
36:54
the good Folks at fishfindermounts.com that's fishfindermounts.com
37:00
I asked them one time when we first met them said like that's a weird name for
37:06
for a product like why would you call it fishfindermounts.com he said well what what how did you find
37:14
it I well I was looking for fish finder mounts and I thought I should go to a
37:19
site right I should go to a com site and and he Saida and there you were mhm and you
37:28
said it worked I rest my case it worked they are they're called fishfindermounts.com
37:34
they are more than just fish finder mounts though I do want to tell you this they are um pretty much anything that
37:42
you they've got one of the coolest things that they've got and I just saw a
37:48
commercial that's being released in January on this they've got the coolest
37:53
most functional way of putting a portable transducer on the back of an
38:00
aluminum boat like when you go you know uh either hiking in where there's a boat
38:05
stashed away or a flying trip or or even for your own 12 footer 14 footer 16t
38:12
aluminum boat that you don't want to drill holes into course the coolest magnetic Mount I have ever seen in my
38:18
life yeah we Ed it few times this year gor the suction cups G more suction cups
38:23
nice remember the old suction cups oh yeah and then you're driving a 4 miles
38:28
an hour and it's skiing behind the boat Pete Pete the bottom has changed
38:34
okay we got to we got to check this out all God meanwhile the Su cup is waving
38:40
at us back there so you tried it Dean yeah we tried it uh on one of the episodes coming up we put it on a
38:46
pontoon boat and it worked for that we did a fly out uh at Pro Lake I think Pro
38:51
Lake yeah SE Lake um so we flew in there and took it in there and then I took it
38:56
up to my cabin hung on no problem the whole all three it's amazing like it's actually hard to get all like that
39:01
magnet is terrifying right it is like you do not want to get your finger between the steel and the magnet but we
39:07
drove that pontoon boat and I don't know how fast I don't remember what motor was on that thing but we had to be going like 30 and it was on there no problem
39:14
really yeah okay that's awesome yeah it's pretty cool great idea I will say it's a great idea uh check it out it's
39:19
at uh fishfindermounts.com fishfindermounts.com and they bring you
39:25
this week's fan question uh which is submitted by Alex from
39:31
Manitoba via email thank you Alex and we encourage everybody listening if you
39:37
have a question may or may not be a burning question uh check it
39:43
out I said something a couple of weeks ago and I don't know whether you took me seriously or not Dean so I'll ask again
39:50
maybe you can uh uh read this into your new dictation machine that you're getting we should give something away
39:57
mhm for these things why don't we give Alex something well you know now how do we do that before we commit to it let's just
40:04
see the logistics is usually the most difficult part of this so what I'm
40:10
suggesting is that for a question submitted that's read on a
40:16
show we should give them something that something could be a simple because then you know shipping and where they live
40:23
and you know big parcel we send a parcel they're going to have to have their neighbors come over and help them unload
40:29
it off the truck and like there's all kinds of complications with that are you backpedaling now are you back no I'm not
40:36
I want to make it simple I don't want to have you know see what I think happened right there is an just throwing that out and he was expecting Dean to say no an
40:43
we can't do that and all D said yeah hell yeah let's go for it no I just want to make it simple for my peeps what if
40:50
we gave him like a code store well a code or we could ask
40:55
Nick if he's not not too busy um if maybe we could send uh Alex uh a coupon
41:04
a coupon for the uh fishing canada.com site where he could go there and and
41:11
Shop to his heart's content and maybe well the coupon the code you mentioned the code maybe it could be as simple as
41:17
a code and and he could get I don't know like 50 bucks or something holy moly
41:24
we're going all in right off the Hop a nice 25 how many of these do we do a year
41:31
52 like I said 10 bucks great count but I can sure
41:38
add five bucks would be a wonderful I think everybody would appreciate oh they'd love the $5 but
41:45
they won't they won't do it for five I know in this day and age we got to do at least doing it for Le up to this point
41:51
wait a minute wait a minute see I was worried there for a moment nobody can hear us I was worried there for a moment
41:57
because I thought I was going to get from the accounting department for just coming up with the stuff right but I just remember it was the Countess
42:04
herself who suggested this oh no boy that's C Blan right there butd so I'm
42:09
thinking why are we chining out at 50 bucks oh oh I mean it's the counters who
42:14
approved it you got to remember you're doing this every week right is that you're talking about weekly or talking de did the math on that it' be 52 times
42:21
a year correct right $100 holy smoke that's a lot of money
42:28
that's how about a Christmas one maybe then maybe we can do this Christmas is coming up and Alex gets a nice little
42:33
bonus for Christmas but we can't do that every week we got to be reasonable I'm going to go out and limit it's for right
42:39
now until further notice if you submit a
42:45
question and it's selected now I it's it's a rigorous process that you have to
42:51
go through I think we've mentioned it million times the the process of getting
42:56
selected to be read is not a simple one um the the question goes into a drum a
43:01
45 gallon drum and it's pulled and they you know so you know that so if you are one of the lucky ones that's pulled I
43:08
think it should be 100 bucks and I'll tell you why no and I'll tell you why I
43:13
think it should be you could almost get two of these suckers you can almost get both of them I mean not not quite but you know yeah a hoodie and a t-shirt so
43:21
until further notice then I'd like to submit that we give $100 away for each
43:27
each of the questions uh the fan questions of the week until further notice when we run
43:33
out of money then obviously that okay yeah yeah hey if you run out of money you can't do it anymore right I got you
43:39
what if a person only wants uh $60 worth of stuff to can you got to give him 40 bucks in cash back well that's where Mr
43:46
Bowman would come in because he's the cash magnet I'm the cashm he's the cash
43:51
all over the cash man now we do accept a questions so most of these are sent in for email but we pull from YouTube
43:59
comments all that we're going to get a lot more questions now when when thr that right all I'm saying okay let's not
44:06
build this thing completely out of proportion all I'm saying is that
44:11
whoever submits a fan question and and keep in mind we
44:18
obviously in order to redeem your your your goods you're going to have to go to
44:25
and fill it like any body else would right absolutely all I'm saying is that any question that we accept and read on
44:34
air we'll get a reward that reward will be a $100 coupon or
44:41
code uh that will allow them to go spend 100 bucks on fishing canada.com there
44:46
you go I don't know I don't know how else we can you that's good and now
44:52
that's pretty good that's damn good that's pretty good so I'm going to be doing anonymous question in there so my
44:58
my question for that question is um do they have a limit as to the number
45:04
that they can submit number one and can they win more than once I don't think they can win more than once we can't let
45:10
them win more than so once they win once they're out of the you're being very generous here so let's not be greedy on their hand you know on their side the
45:16
reason yeah okay so there's so you can only win one of these so that's out of the way and it shares the wealth with
45:22
everybody everybody gets to share and how about submissions can they submit like a thousand of these things yeah
45:29
well I mean it's going to get pulled out of the drum so it's just random anyways right so the drum just gets a little Fuller so from what I'm understanding is
45:37
that you can there's multiple submissions allowed so obviously the
45:43
more you submit the more your chances are winning but however you can only win
45:50
once yep which is cool y all right yep y so until further notice please send good
45:55
questions too and color your shoes today you know no
46:00
can we can you and I maybe be the final Jud judges when we I mean God bless Dean
46:07
he's a busy guy you know he's got all he's got Mach he's got to W like he's got a lot of on his plate all right
46:14
so let's not over tax him okay once he makes that selection he gets that down to a nice 10 10 let's say what five even
46:22
whatever well I was thinking just the one that he selects oh we just got to say yes or no we'll we'll we'll we'll
46:29
see it for the first time here on the open mic oh we'll read it and we'll determine we'll know whether this person
46:36
put enough like Alex for example um in Manitoba he would have won because I
46:43
would say that's a really good question good question yeah is he our first winner then or no unfortunately not okay
46:49
but I'm just saying so so so if it's not a good question I'm going to say hey Bill your question here's your answer
46:54
but it sucks do a better job get another question there so I'm not going to spell check these then I'm going to put them
47:00
in as they come oh even better because a lot of them are even better I like that insane we won't even be able to read
47:06
them then why yeah give them to us raw buddy I want I want to see the real deal
47:14
that's a little maybe a little note to everybody writing questions and you might want to get a little bit more in your spell checker working there or you
47:20
know be very explicit and try to be try to do as good a job as you can on these questions i' say cuz uh now there is
47:25
another way we could do this there is another way we could do this now that I think of it there's another way we could
47:31
do this this is all for a fan question segment no but this would be really cool this would be really cool think about it
47:37
could we could we design you know the uh
47:43
that's a bunch of t-shirt right that's a custom designed shirt could we
47:48
design a fan question shirt why could and they actually win a
47:55
fan question shirt that that logo right there fishfindermounts.com on it and a fan question something like that goes
48:01
across a shirt that'd be cool instead of the 100 bucks that' be they're going to be pissed with you for that but it's
48:07
pissed at me no they you know I like that they probably want the get pissed at Santa Claus when Santa comes down the
48:12
chimney and leave something under the tree no they take whatever Santa brought you pissed at
48:18
me how could they get pissed at me I'm just saying would it I know people I know people we had $12 t-shirt $100 GI
48:27
it well that's where I'm getting to all right that's I'm doing the the math here as we speak I'm trying that's why this
48:34
segment is going on so long I'm trying to add it all up trying to figure out where that's coming from I love all right for now for now
48:41
for this uh coming uh uh next podcast next podcast um now hang on De here we go no
48:50
but hang on love what's to keep Dean from pulling out a a question that was
48:55
that was already asked prior to well Dean knows that Dean will know that and he'll just throw that
49:01
one away that question is redundant and it's already a huge bank right now okay
49:06
well I don't want Banks so I I want new fresh as of this day what do I do with the hundreds I have saved up well
49:12
unfortunately put them aside for now okay okay we well we can't give somebody a prize when they didn't even know they
49:19
were putting questions in for but they did that for free they put questions for free so that's even better effort now is
49:25
oh I can get a 100 bucks out of this or I can get a t-shirt out of this but those people that are putting for free they're putting their extra effort their
49:30
extra time for nothing just to get an answer so if it was a really really good question I think we should uh we should
49:36
be able to at least sift through them and say oh you know what that's a way better than that we need that or that
49:43
and the bonus is they get their little prize that's just my thought so like I said Dean only from this day forward all
49:50
right will we we do this sorry I tried folks I tried to help you out uh the
49:55
drum empty the drum out put in uh get it get some I don't know get some cardboard boxes or something
50:01
and and dump the drum out with the questions that email email questions got
50:06
to D them out save them don't don't get rid of them but let's fill it with new only because I want folks to to feel
50:14
like hey this is starting now I'm going to throw a question in there right now because I know I've got a chance at the
50:20
100 buckaroos yep right oh yeah so as of this program until further notice cuz
50:27
this might end real quick so I would strongly suggest that if you would like to enter this $100 giveaway uh that you
50:35
do this ASAP like in fact if you haven't already done it there's something wrong with you while we were speaking I gave
50:40
you ample time to be the first one to get one in there all right okay all righty then
50:49
what's next Dean do we have any you might want read the question started it yet we haven't read the question you dork well it's not valid anyways from
50:56
Alex this one's not this is not the this is not valid I don't want to give people the wrong impression move on no you said
51:03
it was a good question it is a you just said it was a good question that's a good question go ahead from Alex from
51:09
Manitoba uh via email who will not be getting the 100 Buck no sorry Alex you might want to work on a new question a
51:15
real good one just like this one have you ever been injured on the water all Anglers I know have been injured at some
51:22
point in their career but I haven't seen anything like that on TV YouTube etc etc
51:28
and then he has another part also you should do a sucker video we were talking about with sir Melly and all that sucker
51:35
fishing I think so well we're going to talk about that with uh hopefully uh very soon with our white or whatever the
51:41
name was yeah um have you ever been injured on the water like a I mean we all have had hooks Jabs into us and
51:48
stuff like that you had a nice one this year with the pike Annihilation on your hand you had to be bandaged up big time
51:55
you're bleeding like stuck pig for sure I had sunstroke one time on the boat you had sunstroke in Mexico that time that
52:02
was uh quite yeah that's not injured but I'll tell you what is as bad as injury or or worse you had a really bad Beast
52:09
sting one time on the boat remember that yeah yeah that's right too Bing doesn't sound like much
52:15
but I swell up so my ring finger he bit he nailed my bit he stung my ring finger
52:20
and it swoll up on both sides of the ring there's still the mark there the lady trying my little princess My Little
52:25
Princess had to be taken to the hospital for a beasting oh it's okay you had to go to a wedding that night oh God
52:33
now I'll tell you the worst um not injury because it was an ongoing thing
52:39
but I had uh we I remember this vividly we went to kogami Lake Lodge and I had a
52:46
problem going on which I didn't know what it was at the time it ended up being it's called avascular necrosis of the lunate bone so a hand a bone of my
52:52
hand has lost was losing blood and it it happened to your hip and your hand and
52:57
that's the only place it happens good it's a good thing I think of worst place have that one of your relatives Lena
53:04
thank you had that appreciate that you thatone the blood to the Bone you don't want to lose that right what you're
53:10
saying and I remember we were pike fishing and I had I was all wrapped up and bandaged up trying to cover it as
53:15
best as I could I'm trying to think I can't remember this and Miller was with us in those long Cano those remember
53:21
those long Charlie place we were in that uh Shack yeah in that Shack my anyways
53:26
when I was that's when the marm the Marmet attacked the women's washroom no the shower yes the women's bathroom
53:33
shower Marmot got in there and and just went absolutely AP yes I remember
53:39
bit you as a as a matter of fact the marm bit you as a as part of the result I remember that
53:44
there anyways I I dropped to my I was trying to set the hook we're fishing flukes in shallow water with braided
53:50
line of flipping sticks and every time I set the hook I just about cried it hurt so like on a t level 10 for at that
53:56
place you're setting the hook like every cast every cast and you're setting it hard and it's braid and all that stuff so that would be the worst feeling
54:03
injury I've had but that was already an ongoing thing and I had an operation after that but that was that was no broken bones I'm trying to think in our
54:09
40e you broke your ankle didn't you I broke my ankle very see that's why you
54:17
slagging him you shouldn't have said anything Dean until after the show you said I was going to say something but you were so mean to me all show that uh
54:22
I wanted to say break a leg before the show but you broke an ankle during the show that was that was a good one that was just a slip
54:28
just a slip on the rocks that was uh day uh day
54:34
Airways with with the oh the lake was a AAG aago Lake yes
54:42
we stopped to sue St Marie Hospital on the way home remember we drove in St and
54:47
Nick is waving at me is trying to I where was
54:54
that no I was releasing a fish you're right and
55:00
and I cracked the rib over how about a little thing called a heart attack wow I didn't want to that was not an accident
55:05
that's an injury maor injury so yeah I had a heart attack uh in the field if that counts uh for sure 2019 so yeah I
55:14
guess we've had a few I aside from the countless hooks that we impal ourselves
55:21
with yeah but you had a couple had a couple but not many no you were the king the king of hooks while for a couple
55:29
years was like almost every shoot we were expecting it with ants not every year it was like uh oh yeah you were the
55:35
king of that one I don't know about any Cuts any any elac erations in the sense of of cutting ourselves you know badly
55:42
and to get stitches I don't think anything like that has happened I don't think oh uhoh here we go again yeah on
55:49
the red on the red uh River in Manitoba cat fishing I remember now I had to go
55:56
to the hospital and get stitches because I was trying to release a cat big Channel Cat by the side of the boat and
56:05
the the hook was right through out the other side of the fish's mouth of the
56:11
fish's mouth and I was I had a pair of pliers and I'm trying to sort of push the hook
56:17
back through MH and I slipped and my
56:23
thumb got completely gouged by the tip of the hook and these are Big hooks that
56:28
they use on the red for these cats right and I the force of me pushing down the
56:34
plier slipped and that hook just went right through it was like slicing an
56:40
apple I could see it happening as just sliced my thumb all the way down and I had to go in for Stitch I remember I
56:46
think I was that shoot too we had to send you in there to the hospital I don't even want to think
56:52
you've had a lot of injuries had a lot of injuries for sure I should get a priz you think i' get a priz or something
56:57
those are great there are memories that we would have never talked about unless Alex send in a great question man too
57:03
bad you weren't one show later Alex you got 100 bucks for that one for sure we'll make them feel bad you that was a
57:08
good question Alex I had to give you the the sweater not but I of course cuz not com out of his pocket what's he care
57:13
he'd give everybody a sweater just for saying hello to him t-shirt even just a nice little t-shirt speaking of which it
57:21
is that time of year my friend uh there is gift giving in the air as we approach
57:27
the holiday season or as some of us like to call my colleague and I Christmas is
57:34
upon us uh the question is uh the folks at sale want to know uh do you have a loved
57:42
one uh who would fish every weekend if they
57:47
could yes we do we do have those oh yes we or uh are you in search of the
57:53
perfect gift for the hunter in your life well those they were very particular
57:58
Hunters are very particular fishermen and Hunters I mean how well uh discover gift ideas that are sure to please every
58:06
angler and Hunter in your life and or on your list I suppose yeah uh from fishing
58:11
rods and reels to sonars and fishing and hunting clothing uh Footwear like
58:18
Outdoors stuff is just uh in that footware department I can live in the footware department I just love it of
58:23
course I used to be in the shoe business so that's kind of close to me yeah uh all the way to you be a shoe in for a
58:29
job there that's for sure I be a shoe in for thank yeah wow he was in the middle of dictating in he knows Dean knows my
58:36
humor uh or even trail cameras yes they have a new supply of trail cameras let
58:41
me tell you something if you do have a hunter or any kind of Outdoors person on
58:48
your list trail cams are becoming probably one of the most go-to most
58:53
appreciated gifts that you can give them and and and and you might say oh they
58:59
already have one that's is a gift you can have multiple Camas a hunter loves to have different sets you know cameras
59:04
sitting at different points and that gives them a real good idea but not just Hunters I mean people just love seeing
59:10
Wildlife In Action uh they want to keep an eye on on their favorite water foul uh during the winter period I don't know
59:18
just I you want to talk about Wildlife In Action yes yesterday I had a an owl
59:24
this big no way smash into my window in my backyard my sliding door window get out of here as loud as that scared the
59:30
out of me whoa whoa you almost knocked me off the boat sorry buddy you got your life jacket yeah you got it
59:36
yeah we're good and uh and I I what the hell I got up and of course my dog he's
59:41
all wound up and it was a a Bard I believe Bard owl Dean I showed Dean a picture he died no no he just sat there
59:48
he was looking the other way stunned stunned he stunned and then his wings were kind of flat out too was is weird
59:53
and I thought oh no I cuz I didn't know to take him to a vet he's going to claw the hell out of me he's going to kill me
59:58
and then all of a sudden he turns the little head like an owl did that turn he P blare and then he looked he was
1:00:05
looking sort of down this and he looked right into my eyes he looked through the window right into my eyes and I thought
1:00:10
holy he's looking at me and then and he flew up over the fence and gone off my deck wow gone did you get any
1:00:17
like Sho did you get any IM yeah video just video no no beautiful I can gra I
1:00:23
can grab a still out of that beautiful beautiful bird an owl is such a good looking animal a bird I don't know if
1:00:29
bird so cool so man if you had a trail camp set up in your backyard you could
1:00:35
have seen the action I would have had to be there see right you could have actually SE SE where he came from that was that's the question why was he in my
1:00:42
backyard and boom yeah so H so maybe you should be going to sale and and get
1:00:48
again again there all the time hi Pete hi girls hi Pete hi guys hi Pete
1:00:53
everybody so say goodbye to all the guest work I guess is what we're trying to tell you and get ready to make your a
1:00:59
a special loved one uh very happy this holiday season all right as mentioned earlier in the program uh Our Guest was
1:01:06
first presented to us or introduced unofficially to us by our good friend Joe surelly like that Jersy I like that
1:01:13
unofficially unofficially cuz we hadn't met him at the time that's right um and we'll make it official today and the
1:01:18
reason being is that uh we we got on to the subject of uh of nons sportfish
1:01:24
rough fish not non-game fish sport fishing yeah and Joel said have I got a guy for you to talk to and finally
1:01:31
joining us Tyler winter from Minnesota Tyler how are you buddy I'm doing great thanks for having
1:01:37
me all our pleasure you kidding me anytime we get a chance this is such a rare subject on our show because
1:01:45
honestly and and I won't say ourselves included but most of the folks in our
1:01:50
circles we're so hung up on this term game fish and and if it's not a game Fish we
1:01:57
almost automatically poo poo it I'll bet you Tyler lives the same as us at Minnesota we're probably very close to
1:02:03
the same parallel he's got Walley he's got musky you know he's got a smallmouth bass a bit a large mouth bass probably
1:02:08
everybody talks about that but you're right there's so many other species that we could uh we could capitalize on for
1:02:14
sure Underdog fish is that a term that you've kind of coined or is this
1:02:20
something you picked up somewhere you know that's a great that's a great name for him um I just tend to call them
1:02:26
native fish okay um but it's you know anything's really better than rough fish
1:02:32
right is the thing but uh Native fish Underdog fish because there's really not
1:02:38
like a single thing that like ties them all together there's so many different you know groups of species in there
1:02:44
there's so much diversity in there and then you know we had this in Minnesota we renamed them and we were going
1:02:50
through all the possible things but there wasn't like one good term right
1:02:56
and we like we even threw out noname fish well Fisheries people were like we don't regulate non-game things a
1:03:04
noname there's a noname program for darters and little tiny things so it was
1:03:10
like oh man like what are we gonna call them um you know and it's like anything
1:03:15
yeah anything other than trash so there Bait fish and there's game fish that's about the only two classes isn't there
1:03:21
let's Bait fish and and let's talk about that right off the bat so have you talked to to the officials about how
1:03:28
they determine the validity of you know why is this fish a game fish and this
1:03:33
one's not did they give you do you know at all what goes into that process I
1:03:38
mean so it's just in law it's in statute who deter like how did they
1:03:45
determine that a walleye is a gamefish and a sucker is not like how do they
1:03:50
come up with that so in Minnesota I did a deep dive on this in Minnesota the
1:03:55
term Ru fish was first used in law in 1907 and there wasn't a list they were
1:04:01
just like you know Ruff fish and then there was like ah you know it if you see it right it was like they didn't have to
1:04:06
explain it right and then it wasn't until later they started putting they actually were like okay well the list is
1:04:13
and they're like ah the suckers Turtles uh you
1:04:18
know right like guys I think this list might not be scientific no it has non
1:04:24
fish on it so there's there is terminology called rough I think we have Co fish up here we but it's there's in
1:04:30
us it's rough fish is that what it's actually called in the regulations in in Most states some of them it's other some
1:04:37
it's noname but like in Minnesota it used to be rough um we ended up with a a new name they're now native rough fish I
1:04:44
just kind of skipped the rough part um but that that is basically native fish that grow large enough to be caught by
1:04:52
an angler um and then you know but have hav't been traditionally haven't been game fish but it it comes down to it's
1:04:59
just it's history right and it's like what you know back in the day train
1:05:04
companies would sell tickets for people to go on a fishing vacation they would stock trout at the end of the train line
1:05:11
so they could sell tickets for you to go on vacation great idea oh that's awesome it isene there yeah but you can kind of
1:05:20
look back at history and before that time right before 1900 or something
1:05:26
people just fish for food and for whatever they could catch and then people invented the vacation and then
1:05:33
now you've got to travel as far as you can to go catch a special fish true yeah right and I talked to
1:05:41
people all the time who are like oh yeah I fish up north I fish in the driftless
1:05:47
and I'm like oh you only fish four hours away from here do you ever fish at this Creek where you live oh no no no no no
1:05:53
no there's no game fish in there you know right and so they they're missing out you know I can take my kids fishing a
1:06:00
100 days a year and I could do it within a few miles of my house if I only fished
1:06:06
up north I'd get to go fishing three times yeah yeah that's a great Point that's another good point that we don't
1:06:12
even think of mean because you think where we're sitting right here you've got the aswa creek the all these Creeks
1:06:17
that after the steel head are done or before the salmon come in there's all kinds of fish that especially at the
1:06:23
mouths of these Creeks that you you could bicycle to it let alone and and we already mentioned suckers but they're
1:06:28
all full of suckers I mean just absolutely full kids can have a ball fishing suckers I grew up fishing
1:06:34
suckers man it was great yeah we did we did a lot of thato what species of suckers are you
1:06:40
guys talking about there we I did I did Red Horse suckers in Quebec and they are
1:06:45
big red hores are like they're massive um I don't know what we call them here
1:06:50
Tyler you know they're just your regular ofthe Mill white is there such a thing as a white sucker
1:06:56
there there is I just but Canada has 18 different species of suckers wow okay 18
1:07:04
I mean so yeah there you go right there I mean you can you can make a game
1:07:10
out of seeing how many you can get in a day right right there but you know that's that's one of the things that I
1:07:15
hate about this the categorization the lumping and like the the way the regulations were was that it kind of
1:07:21
killed people's curiosity you know you you got this one category and then people like oh well you know you can't
1:07:27
do any whatever and I'm like well that's 26 different species you know in Minnesota it was 26 different species I
1:07:32
don't know how many are regulated as Co fish up there but you got 18 species of suckers right off the bat so crazy no
1:07:39
idea right and it kind of like it kills the the Curiosity in there like there's
1:07:44
you know you start opening this Pandora's Box and you find out there's a lot more fish in there that we've been
1:07:50
overlooking than maybe we even you know ever dreamed yeah it can't be sized cuz
1:07:55
we we've talked about it Pete and I have talked about it uh over the years it can't be based on size you can't say
1:08:00
well because if it can't grow to gigantic proportions it can't be a game Fish because as we know there are some
1:08:08
big Co fish out there oh my God common common carp and and gar and stuff like that around here are huge the one thing
1:08:15
though the one thing that does stand out Tyler is consumability
1:08:21
and and that is that most of the game fish that we deemed to be sporty are
1:08:27
also a very good table fair I can't say that for a whole lot of these coarse
1:08:34
fish um because we don't know right or because mostly because we don't know don't know we've never tried it I've
1:08:40
never I've heard of pickled or canned sucker is supposed to be really good well well you've had sucker right you've
1:08:45
cooked prepared suck yeah tell us about that yeah uh they're just a little bony but
1:08:50
of course if you don't like bones in your food you can always have tofu um
1:08:56
well said so you know I guess some people want to complain about that you know um
1:09:03
but you know I I hunt and and fish and I I can break down a fish and deal with
1:09:09
the bones uh make it into fish patties is one really easy way to deal with the bones of a sucker um you can score the
1:09:16
fillets and fry them and the bones will soften right up um but the other thing too it's just I think a lot of it just
1:09:23
comes back to culture like you know in the Boneless of it you know Walley are you know the fish of Minnesota and it's
1:09:31
it is kind of hard to get excited about a fish though where the main positives are things they lack um they lack bones
1:09:38
and they lack flavor and I guess they lack fight too but you know it's like
1:09:44
way to that's very exciting wow what is the can you compare the sucker meat to a Walley let's say
1:09:51
what what is the difference uh you're hard pressed uh if you were given a boneless piece of
1:09:57
it um you they're they're both very mild flavored um it just comes down to it
1:10:04
just comes down to like the suckers do have more of those pin bones um you know
1:10:09
that's the main that's the main thing to me I mean I my favorite fish to eat is lake trout and you know then after lake
1:10:16
trout and white fish then it's basically just like the rest of them are you know kind of interchangeable you know one
1:10:23
thing that comes to mind that I I'm trying to come up with differences between um one thing that comes to mind
1:10:30
and correct me if I'm wrong Tyler is that what we deem to be gamefish are
1:10:35
usually carnivores Carnivores in the sense that they they will predate on themselves and on on other living
1:10:41
organisms whereas the non-game fish um
1:10:46
usually are vegetarians right both in have teeth and they're they're nasty and gar teeth they have teeth and they're
1:10:52
they eat fish there's probably a few more that we you know could go through but there's I think there's a couple
1:10:57
things you probably have in common you can a lot of them live in shallow water so a lot of times they're pretty visible
1:11:03
um warm water for most of them uh you know somewhat some some of the suckers
1:11:09
go into cold water trout streams but a lot of them live in warmer water um and
1:11:15
a lot of them feed you know more towards the bottom um right um and then also to
1:11:20
your point about the you know the like lurs um it is funny that a lot of the
1:11:26
game Fish right they eat artificials they eat you know spoons and flies and so I think there's kind of a built-in
1:11:33
market for selling stuff to catch those fish right right and so now you got something
1:11:40
to promote right there's a business there yeah right I I joke about like you know I'm I'm I'm not gonna get a a
1:11:46
sponsor because all I need is like Hooks and worms yeah um you you know what
1:11:54
though Tyler the carpet industry might argue with that because Europe as you know uh there's a whole industry there
1:12:02
for carb fish to buy goodies and I mean you think bass fishing is complex with
1:12:08
with the array of of goodies there for say you should see if you haven't uh in
1:12:13
Europe the carp fishing have you ever ter have you ever seen like a sportsman show over there in Europe that the a
1:12:20
carp show sort of thing it is absolutely insane they put so much work into the
1:12:25
and the equipment and you know so so but they're also really limited for the amount of like water they
1:12:32
have it's really dense they're pay lakes these fish are super super pressured you
1:12:38
know and I'm I'm literally I'm going to the Mississippi and you know uh it's it's a bit of worm it's a number eight
1:12:44
circle hook uh it's a fluro leader a swivel Sinker slide and I make my own
1:12:50
flexible sinkers and I'm set and then you know I'm catching fish yeah there's
1:12:55
not much more to it we I think the only time that I recall uh speaking of suckers uh like we
1:13:03
were just a few minutes ago the only time I recall ever even catching a sucker on uh a nonnatural or an artificial bait
1:13:11
was uh when we were fishing up north um I think for Walley or Smallmouth in that River and I caught I caught one onj
1:13:19
Lumberjack Lodge I caught one on a crankbait first time ever I'd seen a sucker actually hit a crankbait but I
1:13:24
think I might have right I might have just pissed them off because it was it was strange as
1:13:30
hell um got a double header a small mouth and a and a sucker at the same time yeah was fun the Smallmouth will
1:13:37
follow the suckers around they're looking for an easy meal I'm sucker fishing sometimes I actually have to
1:13:43
catch there'll be a smallmouth bass on both sides I have to catch both of them before the sucker has a chance to get my
1:13:49
Bas imagine that the things you have to go through that is horrible Tyler
1:13:55
how did you how did you get inv go through a lot of worms that way oh no kid true how did you get involved in
1:14:01
this uh we'll call it Underdog uh fishing well you know the thing is I'm
1:14:07
the kind of the black sheep in my family I I come from a long line of a very Avid hunters and I was the first one who
1:14:13
really took it like wanted to fish and I just started fishing wherever I could and I was fishing in a ditch in southern
1:14:21
Minnesota middle of cornfield and fishing for car fishing for whatever I
1:14:26
could and I caught a fish that I had no idea what it was it was a moai and it was bright silver it had teeth on its
1:14:34
tongue it came jumping out of the water and it looked like maybe it almost looked like a miniature turban like a
1:14:39
foot long right cannot over emphasize how silvery and shocking this fish was
1:14:46
in this muddy water and I didn't know what it was none of my uncles who knew everything knew what it was and that
1:14:53
fish convinced me that there were still Mysteries even in the ditches in
1:14:59
Minnesota you know and it turns out we have 165 species of fish here and
1:15:05
they're not all they're not all game fish right so um that fish like inspired
1:15:10
me to get really curious about all of those other fish and I found out that there's a lot of fish that are are big
1:15:16
enough to be exciting to catch or are you know uncommon enough to be exciting to catch or whatever and that if you can
1:15:22
catch if you can catch a buffalo or sucker or a bofin you can catch anything
1:15:28
yeah that's that's that's a good point now you're in the process of uh trying to get a a bill passed where where you
1:15:35
now are going to be calling these Critters native uh uh game Fish I'm
1:15:40
assuming um so we did pass that actually passed this this spring the native fish Bill yep and so what we did is we went
1:15:48
through because this phrase rough fish was in use for 117 years it had just
1:15:55
been put in our laws all over Minnesota in places where it didn't really belong
1:16:00
it was used instead of saying invasive species they would just say rough fish um so because it had one it just had one
1:16:09
species of invasive fish in this category but then they'd be like oh well you know you can build rough fish barriers you can do that whatever um and
1:16:16
so it was just copy pasted and we we got some people together who were interested
1:16:22
in this we had research on fish like Buffalo that show that they're living to be over 100 years old and we realize if
1:16:31
we're going to have actual management of these native fish because they do a lot of good things for us then we actually
1:16:37
have to solve all these various 42 times that this phrase has been used
1:16:45
in the law so we can actually have limits so we can like actually manage
1:16:50
them yeah same thing we went through with the common carp here right just
1:16:55
kind of we and we know how long and difficult of a road that was to travel oh boy was it ever you know what it's
1:17:01
good that Tyler can uh they can show us the Minnesota he can show us that it can be done too right so maybe we could work
1:17:07
on something here in our Ontario and our least or Canadian maybe you never know
1:17:13
right sure because we we should be managing native and invasive species differently I we can all agree on that
1:17:19
yeah you said you okay you're using invasive species with the native fish as
1:17:25
well yeah and and so they were combined they were Com comined when in fact they
1:17:31
were not n not invasive species at all and most of them had been years since
1:17:37
the beginning of time so did this bill kind of clarify that did did you get
1:17:43
them removed from the invasive species list for example yep so now there's an
1:17:48
invasive species category and there's a native fish category and so we can actually have separate regulations okay
1:17:54
for each category it's a crazy idea right like you're like you're gonna have you know
1:18:01
scientific management of a a natural resource yeah unlimited Harvest on the on the invasive ones and then like some
1:18:09
you know science and some basic sort of you know limits and regulations for the native you said you had one invasive in
1:18:16
that one you earlier what was that what species is it so the the common carp was grouped in with all those 26 native fish
1:18:22
okay and so okay and that that kind of just kind of dominated it a lot of people never read past that and then
1:18:28
they would think that Buffalo were KP right right I mean not I mean who would do such a thing yeah
1:18:35
exactly that's easy to do though you got to admit for those that that have never well the first Buffalo we saw we thought
1:18:41
it was a carp yeah you know what I mean that was that long ago exactly for sure right and that's exactly what happened
1:18:47
so then I'm out on the river bank and people are like oh look at those carp
1:18:52
I'm like those are actually a native fish those are big mouth Buffalo and then they like ah pretty sure it's a
1:18:59
carp and I'm like there was nothing in the reg's book right like that would
1:19:04
distinguish them yeah um and I realized it was going to take a long time to do that one person at a time on the
1:19:10
riverbank one of the problems I think that you ran into and certainly we've
1:19:16
run into up here one of the problems I think the the major cause of resistance
1:19:22
when it comes to recategorizing these things is and I know we just brush over it lightly but the amount of work that
1:19:30
has to go into it from that day forward once you get this recategorized as a
1:19:35
gamefish now you got all sorts of problems because as a game Fish it's got to have an open and closed season it's
1:19:40
got to have you know cre limits it's got to have all kinds of rules and regulations that now you have to have
1:19:46
people in place to make sure that they're adhering to the rules and regulations well all of this doesn't
1:19:52
exist if they're just lumped into you know corish or or whatever we want to
1:19:57
call them so there is a lot of work involved I know sometimes we don't even think of that that's great that's a
1:20:03
great point because ultimately what would be the payoff then if we did change that over so the payoff in my
1:20:10
opinion uh people can still fish for these guys no matter what right they can still fish I think more people would be
1:20:15
exposed to them if if we categorize something as a gamefish and and people
1:20:21
like the three of us start talking it up and saying wow a great sport this this is incredible we got to get everybody we
1:20:27
got to get kids in m so what happens is more and more people start utilizing them and as more and more people start
1:20:34
utilizing them more and more people are going to have to be put in place in order to manage it because even though
1:20:41
right now and I'll use in our case you know common carp right without any
1:20:47
regulations on common carp you can do whatever you want with them it doesn't really matter right and
1:20:55
and therefore there's no government involvement in terms of uh dollars spent
1:21:01
to manage them uh enforce regulations and all this stuff if you change that
1:21:09
automatically as the population grows to embrace this new sport or
1:21:15
sportfish the infrastructures have to be put in place to manage believe it or not
1:21:21
even if we don't think that you'd ever have to manage common carp you do right because now they become part of
1:21:27
mainstream you can take it another level up and I got a great story with this just this fall right before ice up uh I
1:21:34
was out with some some kids and a friend my kids and and what and one of these kids is is catching a Shad red hor not a
1:21:41
huge one 16 inches or so and the sun glints off it they have these metallic
1:21:46
scales and these bright red fins and somebody was walking their dog on the Mississippi Bank behind us and they go
1:21:53
they stopped is that a trout is there a trout and I'm like no this is a Shad red
1:21:59
horse and we landed the fish and we hold it up she's like what is that and I'm like it's a Shad red horse she's like
1:22:05
it's so beautiful I thought it was a trout I'm like well it's better than that because not only is it beautiful
1:22:11
but it it's actually the reason the Eagles are nesting here and it eats zebra muscles wow and so it's actually
1:22:18
you know and it's a native fish and she's like that's she was just so struck
1:22:23
by seeing this fish reflect in the sunlight with these bright red fins and
1:22:28
now she has a whole new appreciation for the river that she's been walking by good point right yeah and she she sees
1:22:35
something beautiful she thinks it's going to be a trout well there's other beautiful fish too yeah so now A Rose by
1:22:42
Any Other Name right there you go might that comes down to you know keeping trash out of the river and and doing
1:22:50
pickups and water quality protections and you know um Park UC and it's it's
1:22:56
when you say hey this stream just has course fish in it right you're telling people that the stream's not worth very
1:23:03
much yeah right right and that's not just for Anglers that's that's important for everybody well you know what if we
1:23:09
protected that stream you know maybe we like to see Eagles and maybe we like to see otter and maybe we like to see you
1:23:16
know Buffalo uh migrate in the spring H you reminded me of when you told the story of that soccer right there I was
1:23:22
fishing in Dunville you weren't on the shoo dance but I was with Steve Hard Castle and we caught the most bizarr
1:23:30
looking fish and I think is is there such a fish as a red rud something kind of a rud fish have you heard of that one
1:23:36
Tyler there is cuz this thing had the most orange fin just like that but it was it wasn't
1:23:41
a sucker it was like a really high thin body and it had this quill like fin up
1:23:47
the top I'm telling you this is I got I think I got pictures I'll I'll find the pictures of it and we C about four or
1:23:52
five of these quillback that's it quillback the R I think the RS were in
1:23:58
uh uh in niagar River but quillback that's what it was what a cool looking fish like it was like when I saw them I
1:24:04
thought and they fought like crazy they they bit our baits well we were fishing catfish and they bit our worms it was it
1:24:10
was insane and then I thought these things exist here and that's the only place I've ever seen it was in the what is the one in Dunville what's that river
1:24:16
is it the tames or is it yeah so very cool so know you see a quillback and
1:24:22
there's there's a couple different species um you see one of those and you would think that it belonged in a
1:24:27
tropical aquarium they're also really silvery and they got that really dramatic finin yeah they're gorgeous
1:24:33
yeah why haven't we seen more of it I don't know I don't know it must be a Lake Erie thing or a picture behind you that's the one that Pete took there it
1:24:39
is that's it wow yeah look at the Orange and the fins and stuff like that he's got a little sucker mouth looks like almost like a sheep head head there
1:24:46
looks kind of like a drum that's cool yeah yeah what a neat fish eh you got chubby little hands there brother those
1:24:53
I was I was working trade back then I think well and the thing too is you know people will catch you know they they go
1:25:00
out uh bass fishing or trow fishing or whatever and they they have a good day and then they catch one fish like that and they're like ah well you know uh
1:25:08
what's this for right and it's like well wait a minute which one was actually the challenge right like good point you
1:25:14
catch you catch 30 trout or 30 bass and you catch one sucker well why where's
1:25:19
the trophy you know a lot of people like to brag up how hard it is to catch the fish they're catching
1:25:25
right these are really smart fish I'm like really smart fish don't eat
1:25:32
metal good point that's funny Tyler you know somebody listening to this might say well if if you're so in love with
1:25:41
this coarse Vis we'll call it um then wouldn't it be better if he kept it
1:25:47
under WS you know why do you want to share this with your fellow Anglers why do you want more people saying what's
1:25:53
the outome positive outcome what's what's why would you want to do that because after all you might eventually
1:25:59
put it in Peril if people start fishing and overfishing them would you well I mean the the way a lot of these fish get
1:26:05
in Peril is habitat loss dams you know those sort of things um the and quality
1:26:13
of water obviously is a big thing right and some of these fish are are imperil um Bigmouth Buffalo and parts of Canada
1:26:20
are a species of concern um the copper the copper red horse is like an endangered species um and so um the you
1:26:30
know and the thing is binoculars don't work very well for fish yeah I can take you out you know you can go out bird
1:26:35
watching and Marvel at something you don't have to touch it you don't have to see it right um but if we can get you
1:26:41
know if people can catch a few of these things and there's some of them you know uh the red a lot of the red horse Shad
1:26:47
red horse and you know drunk yeah like take a few eat them um you know spread
1:26:52
it out you don't don't you don't have to eat Walley for every meal and and get people to care for it and and love it I
1:26:58
mean that's how that's how we've you know managed Wild Life and now we've got turkeys and white tailed deer
1:27:05
everywhere good point yeah great point it's it's it's worked for you know so
1:27:10
many other animals um and so and the fact of the matter is who's like we we
1:27:17
kind of need these fish uh they like I said that a lot of them meat Zebra muscles or they food for Eagles or um
1:27:24
they can modify habitat and transport nutrients like they're doing things we
1:27:30
actually need to happen in the environment if we're going to fish for or not you got a cobra behind you there Cobra black bambo is going to bite your
1:27:36
neck that's exactly what that look we got to put a little fake head on that you got to put you know what I see boys
1:27:43
if I if I I'm looking into the the future of this because it's it's going to take a long time for everything to
1:27:48
Pro process including people accepting and all but I see that as the future of fishing you know what I mean you opened
1:27:54
up more Minds into these fish and all that so these our kids of our kids are all of a sudden bass Grandpa Pete used
1:28:01
to fish for bass all the time I don't know why he's fishing for those things these things are a riot you know what I mean we can have a future of it because
1:28:07
right now it's going to be a tough as Tyler knows it's a tough go he's trying to get a bill passed and etc etc you're fighting a lot of battle there right
1:28:14
even though there's not a bunch of negativity it's just it's just a whatever sort of situation but there's you know it's hard to do yeah I think
1:28:21
the the fact of the matter is is I think people you know in in the last 10 years
1:28:27
you know um it's just been there's been a lot more positivity about it there's more research you know that is you know
1:28:34
keeps making the news at least in fish circles you know when when you find out that a fish in Minnesota or Canada is Liv into 127 years old people get
1:28:41
interested right um when you find out that that fish is subject to unlimited
1:28:46
Harvest you know that that like raises some eyebrows yeah um and like our
1:28:54
Minnesota ones migrating into Canada right so right um and so like you know
1:28:59
we can just bring the level up on this stuff and then the other thing is too is I think there's a lot less concern about
1:29:06
you know uh The Taste or or whatever like that it's like well if you're G to go out and catch bass all day and let
1:29:13
them all go you know maybe you want to go out and catch something else too um
1:29:19
there's really you know and I'm I'm not only a sucker fisherman you know I go to the the Waters and catch lake trout
1:29:25
Every Spring and I love it because you know they're pretty dumb fish with a big
1:29:31
mouth they're a lot of fun um sometimes I like a fish that doesn't bite um and
1:29:36
I'll sit and fish to a big mouth Buffalo for an hour and you know maybe get
1:29:43
one and that's fun too as I listen to this conversation and I earlier on I
1:29:49
said maybe you know it's the lack of consumption that that is keeping them sort of um below the radar but I think
1:29:58
that's wrong too because I can think of a lot of cases where consuming it is just
1:30:03
not even on the map and yet right and and we go to back to karp in Europe I
1:30:08
mean that's a sacred fish there's no consuming of those things right but you know what's glorified it and and and it
1:30:15
reminds me of a conversation I had with our good friend Roland uh Roland Martin a few years ago when we were talking
1:30:21
about the early days in bass fishing when him and uh and a few of the other good old boys started fishing
1:30:28
competitively for bass there was not really an appetite and I'm not talking consuming appetite
1:30:35
just an appetite to fish for bass back then when when they started in in the mid-60s um and he says that it was it
1:30:44
was their efforts in fishing competitively for the species that put
1:30:50
it on the map and all of a sudden people woke up to it said hey that's very cool
1:30:57
that's sexy right and he says that's what glorifies cuz it's not consumed large M
1:31:04
as we know is taboo almost right exactly it's like negative so so maybe that's what we need maybe we need to glorify
1:31:11
this a little bit a sucker Derby A Great Big World Class sucker Derby like something like that where people are
1:31:17
coming and and paying and and then and there's glory and there's you know all that good stuff you know another
1:31:23
probably top of that that whole list too in North America or at least in our areas is musky nobody you can't keep
1:31:29
them I mean M our says no you can't you can keep one for a trophy nobody even thinks about eating them but yet every
1:31:34
it's you know more and more people are Musky fishing more guys are spending $150,000 on a boat you got to have that
1:31:40
big truck they're putting so much money into this fish that they get a follow with you know they don't get to catch it they just see them at the boat wooo good
1:31:47
and then and then you know what happens so like that's happening right in Minnesota lake max they just caught and
1:31:52
released a a gigantic one pending world record right then I go to the river a mile from my house and fish from Shore
1:32:00
and people come over to me and my kids having fun in the riverbank catching fish and they go why are you doing
1:32:06
that yeah well you bought $150,000 boat to go catch something to let go yeah
1:32:13
like I'm the crazy one yeah good point good point wow it's funny it's it's a
1:32:19
fascinating subject though and and one that uh we all need to speak to a little bit more and bring to folks
1:32:27
attention right you know if I if I lived in The Boundary Waters I'd probably fish
1:32:32
for lake trout every day you know um and part of what I you know I I get to fish
1:32:38
for Buffalo because they are next to my house um I talk to people all the time
1:32:44
I'd love to fish more what is the closest place to your house what's the place that you can fish on the way home
1:32:50
from work and then like what's there you know uh it's a lot easier to catch and
1:32:56
appreciate what's naturally there than to try to make it something that's not
1:33:01
and you know so it's like you know take advantage of that uh maybe it's suckers
1:33:07
maybe it's trout maybe it's bass but like you know take advantage of that you'll get to Fish a lot more by by
1:33:14
doing that than you know trying to trying to go to some some place some
1:33:19
exotic place and I'll tell you too when if you're fishing on a regular basis you
1:33:25
just get so much better at it that when you do go on vacation yeah you you'll
1:33:32
capitalize on it what Tyler question for you what is the weirdest rough fish or
1:33:38
any fish species that you've eaten that you've consumed kept in
1:33:43
consumed you know I've I've eaten some Buffalo um because I I donate the heads
1:33:48
for aging and so I've you know don't let the fish go to waste um
1:33:54
and the other red horse species those are probably the ones I I've eaten the most I keep meaning I want to eat a gar
1:34:02
um but apparently every time every time I uh like go out with that mission it's
1:34:07
like somehow the Garo so the G yeah yeah
1:34:13
and I'm sure somebody's listening to this from some place where they're they're thck with gar and they're like
1:34:19
um and I'm real hit and miss on GAR here in Minnesota this is kind of the edge of their r range and uh you know there's a
1:34:26
narrow window and um that's uh but that's I've heard great things um you
1:34:33
know once you get inside of them so really on the list the backstrap I think it's the backstrap on them or something
1:34:38
I've heard that it's really good so they're real they're real meaty um but yeah you just got to get uh tin snips
1:34:47
and you got to get past those scales I mean kiding they're nasty you got to
1:34:52
come up to the Ottawa River up here Canada and and I have been up there is like world class gar fishing it's unreal
1:34:59
and they're big too you get all sizes but they're and you sight fishing that's a that's a fun game in itself we could
1:35:04
to do a whole show on that for sure because it's so so much fun so and we've never eaten anything like that so but
1:35:09
but but you know what you know maybe people like us should do more of that you know where if we are out fishing for
1:35:18
non-traditional game Fish uh maybe we should sample some of it on on the
1:35:24
programs like you am I right you did you did did you do an episode with the meat eater where you were actually cooking
1:35:30
something up two two two of them tell us about that yeah uh we did uh um I was on
1:35:37
do boat and we did a big mouth Buffalo and uh then what we uh we caught a
1:35:44
buffalo and we released that and that was fantastic and then for for dinner we
1:35:50
uh got a massive red horse and and uh made uh uh fish patties made made deep
1:35:57
fried sucker balls out of those um and that was that was great and then uh I was also on bside fishing with with Joe
1:36:05
um and we uh did uh red horse tacos wow that would be good that sounds good I
1:36:11
bet you they'd be good yeah CU by the time you debone them you don't have like the nice triangular filet anymore but
1:36:18
you put it in a taco you can't tell exactly so we gotta do that we gotta do
1:36:25
that we could do YouTube stuff right we could do it all on YouTube dob in that
1:36:32
uh the publicity and the story they told with that in the Buffalo was was just an
1:36:37
incredible thing and uh um you know taking a conservation story and making
1:36:44
it you know an angling thing as well so that it's accessible right because like hey you can actually go and see these things and catch them you know and it's
1:36:50
like and they get big you know and you let it go and it's might it's going to live long enough your grandkids can
1:36:56
catch it we've talked about Buffalo a couple times now in the show uh we've only seen one ever caught but we've done
1:37:05
a lot of carp fishing and you would think that we would have come across inadvertently uh a buffalo or two is
1:37:10
there a specific way to angle for them that's different than say traditional carp fishing yeah I have never caught
1:37:18
one like laying a worm on the bottom um I see them but they they're mouth
1:37:24
points forward right and they will swim around and eat plankton eat whatever it
1:37:29
is um I'm honestly not always sure what they're eating um I positive what
1:37:35
they're not eating which is a lot of times my fly good point and yeah so the the thing
1:37:44
is they're like if they're feeding on the surface they're looking up and you
1:37:49
would think oh I'll just gently lower my my fly or my down and they will keep swimming and
1:37:57
then duck under and keep come up on the other side and keep going wow and what
1:38:03
the the yeah and you're like they didn't act spooked but they also knew that wasn't
1:38:09
food right they'll be swimming in a straight line and then um so the trick
1:38:16
is is to kind of see where like the water's swirling around and where like
1:38:21
the foam is going to start like collecting and get your your your presentation on
1:38:26
that before the fish show up and then you have to have your perfect dead drift
1:38:32
because they they're not going to chase food they don't want anything to chase they don't want anything that's even like moving it seems so you get a
1:38:39
perfect dead drift and then oh if you're if you guess right a buffalo will come up and start coming down this line and
1:38:46
they'll they'll find your your fly um sometimes I use a chubby Chernobyl
1:38:51
sometimes I use a worm depends on what Rod I'm holding that day and
1:38:56
they'll they'll take it every once in a while if you get a really aggressive one I've seen them turn as much as three
1:39:02
inches to go take a fly whoa that's crazy I know uh like if there's a
1:39:10
Spinner Fall um and they're really going crazy sometimes they will they will turn
1:39:16
slightly and and take a fly that that looks good but the the drift has to be
1:39:21
like perfect and that's I know I know Joe mentioned I use a like a a long C pole um so I have an 18 foot
1:39:30
long Japanese Rod weighs four ounces feels like a magic wand and I can do a
1:39:35
perfect drift no line on the surface so no mending um and because yeah these fish
1:39:40
are constantly afraid of like eagles right they're right up there at the surface so any splashing or whatever can
1:39:46
make them all spook um so yeah you roll cast is like a tricky thing to pull off
1:39:53
without uh without spooking them you you got to you got to have nice nice clean
1:39:59
drifts mending you know then youed to start the timer over because now it's moved so if it saw it move and now it's
1:40:06
like you got to wait for it to kind of forget again um they're super tricky fish to catch hence why we have not
1:40:12
caught one exactly throwing a spinner bait out there took 90° to it what about
1:40:19
I've heard now maybe it's not the same buffalo fish but I've heard heard people in Texas Fishing big buffalo down there
1:40:26
and I don't know if it's a big mouth Buffalo or whatever it is but I think they're doing it with carp gear if I'm
1:40:32
not mistaken is that so those are Smallmouth Buffalo ah okay okay for the
1:40:39
most part and Smallmouth Buffalo um they have more of a regular sucker mouth um
1:40:45
I've caught some of those too um and they they don't live in my my home
1:40:51
Waters uh they're a little bit further South than me incredible fish I mean I I I caught one that was like 31 in um you
1:41:00
know and like you had to go to uh I upsize my hooks because they started to straighten them out yeah um you know
1:41:06
just super fun i' also say too you know one of the things we we've touched on a couple times is the challenges of of
1:41:13
catching some of these things you know if they're bony mouss um whatever and I think maybe one of the things that's LED
1:41:20
itself to the the rising popularity is just the improvements in fishing tackle we've had um you know these these fish a
1:41:27
lot of them would have been bait Steelers or something well now we have you know sharper hooks we have braided line we have better rods and fish that
1:41:35
used to steal the worm off your hook maybe now are getting caught good you know and you know so it's like now you
1:41:42
can actually catch now you can actually there's tackle out there that can handle a bof fin without getting wrecked I love
1:41:48
bins man and he's right they wreck your tackle man those things are nasty that is F that's a fun fish um listen how can
1:41:56
folks uh maybe get more involved in in this I think it's a whole new fishery that's sitting out there just waiting to
1:42:02
be topped for sure how can how can people get more uh involved or more information um where can they find
1:42:09
you um Native fish for tomorrow has a has a website and uh you can contact us
1:42:14
on there um we're growing um you know regionally and looking for opportunities
1:42:21
um always you know a lot of what we do is uh showing up and being the people
1:42:26
who care um because one of the big hurdles to getting anything done is
1:42:31
people say Well Point to the problem who cares right and it's like well you know we care you know and when we go out
1:42:39
especially in the spring before game fish season opens whatever guess what there's other people out there too um
1:42:45
they just haven't been speaking up probably because they don't want to even know about the fishing spot well that could be a two that's one of the
1:42:51
problems with most Anglers right we're so that uh God forbid should we share with
1:42:56
somebody else you know so I can see that being a problem for sure yeah anyway excellent Tyler uh want
1:43:04
to thank you for joining us eye opening it was a delight having you on the program uh we'll stay in
1:43:11
touch um maybe you should come up here to the Ottawa River and sample some of
1:43:16
our garpike we we know a guy we know a guy I think I should and sounds s like
1:43:23
you got some uh some Buffalo and some suckers too we do buddy we do you could open our eyes up really well on this
1:43:28
stuff up here so yeah thank you friend appreciate it man we'll talk to you soon thank you all right uh Tyler winter uh I
1:43:38
don't know rough fish native Ruff fish course fish extraordinaire it hope soon be native fish but but you know there is
1:43:45
so much to be had there that that uh lost opportunities as yeah but why can't
1:43:51
we just got thinking about this through this whole conversation why can't we just promote it as it is because even
1:43:57
though there's no laws there's no laws doesn't matter you still go fishing for it no no it's not a qu but people won't
1:44:03
seem to not get interested in something unless it's put on that next pedestal
1:44:09
you know what I mean it's got to be regulated it's got to have an open and close season it's got to have a limit if it doesn't have a limit then it can't be
1:44:16
any good yeah right that's kind of the mentality if there's no limit it can't be good yeah and I think that's where
1:44:24
that would certainly help for sure yeah once they're regulated then people say oh oh wait a minute I can only have one of those H right yeah and then you got
1:44:33
uh locals um you know like like Tyler or or some young some young dudes that are
1:44:39
are slaying suckers and throwing that on their little YouTube channel or on their Instagram and all of a sudden other kids
1:44:45
are seeing it and seeing it and saying oh my God these things what El this oh there's the regulations that's a white socker in there and he's catching you
1:44:51
know his limit of them and yeah it could become popular I I didn't ask him but we should have asked him I suppose um would
1:44:58
would have been his favorite presentation for sucker got to be a worm I would think so I think so I don't know
1:45:06
well that's something we can ask him next time around Dam worm's good for everything hey worm on the bottom is good for pretty much everything I see uh
1:45:14
I see our good friend Nicholas Keeper of the store is waiting to uh keep her up the store keep her up the store he will
1:45:22

1:49:37
feel like the shopping channel you know how you go and and angel look at this this
1:49:43

1:49:49
like going out in the limb as you know Peter sometimes that limb breaks and snaps and I end you've uh been on a few
1:49:55
broken limbs in your day on my butt but I'm going to predict that this one is going to be our number one Celler okay
1:50:01
see the color of that is not the same color as that what's it's a light this is the actual color it's caramel this is
1:50:08

1:50:21

1:50:27
was told by Nick to make sure that we leave a little bit of time at the end of the program because he would like to
1:50:33
come up and uh uh bring these new articles in so that we could talk to
1:50:38
about it at length and then as we were signing off I remembered and I he was doing he was
1:50:46
doing like this like that like like like I have no idea what the hell he was doing bam only he he's talking about us
1:50:54
now but we can't hear forgot something else too apparently in my absence we have to do what whated bonus code oh
1:51:00
sure why not why don't we do that too there we go so anyways did I did I
1:51:06
mention that I'm predicting that to be number one and uh I think you've drawn even the interest around it you've
1:51:11
already I think you're already won that one hands down I think just people are showing interest in that so much that we
1:51:17
would like to interrupt this program and bring you the much anticipated uh bonus code for the L fishing Canada giveaways
1:51:24
that we just mentioned on fishing canada.com we're not interrupting the program we're just we're just going with the program aren't we I think this we
1:51:29
were supposed to read this earlier well I'm a little embarrassed right now but no don't be buddy we screw up all the
1:51:35
time what the hell we're allowed some freebies in a week aren't we uh let me address that camera there for vaa
1:51:41
because he says to me sometimes he says if you're if you want to talk to the audience and have more of a personal
1:51:47
contact with them you look right there so there or there for Mah I'm going to
1:51:52
I'm going to go right there and say uh this week's code is
1:51:58

1:52:41
this week's code for those of you who are following I guess if everybody gets 10 instead of 100 doesn't make any
1:52:47

1:52:53
