native and there isn't we know that for a fact here in Canada you know even there's a strong fishery for common cart

but they're not a game they're not even a game fish so therefore when they're not game Fish means nobody can put rules and regulations on them and it's kind of

interesting story and it's going to be concerning to some people for sure uh ourselves included MH uh Walley and

lakes with zebra muscles have higher mercury levels so a study found another negative effect of invasive Zebra

muscles in Lakes higher levels of mercury in fish so this is by can I just

jump in for a moment so we're we're going to make an assumption that all Great Lakes tributaries and connected

Lakes will be affected by this bulletin right I would say any lakes with zebra muscles I I think Superior still doesn't

have them right or does it's got cagas yeah it's got It's got it I believe it does not as bad I don't think I think

yeah I'm not sure it's an anomaly Superior is an anomaly I mean as you see from those uh all two clear films you

can tell but I think there I think there zebras in Superior is too I thought they're in the in the southern end the
26:56
St Mary's River end of it mhm but anyways researchers from the University of Minnesota the US

Geological Survey and other agencies studied 21 Minnesota lakes and Minnesota
27:07
is connected to Ontario folks Northwest Ontario if you look at the map you're going to see that we are in a connected

area and a lot of Great Lakes it covers a lot of Great Lakes uh compared Mercury concentations concentrations in the
27:19
tissues of two species Walley and yellow perch they found that adult Walley in Lakes infested with zebra muscles has
27:26
72% higher Mercury concentration then it Lakes without the Invaders so
27:32
let me do one more with the yellow perch in yellow perch the common pray for Walley the Mercury concentrations were
27:38
157% higher so just to break this down mercury

in as far as I know is a naturally occurring
27:50
substance that um is found pretty much in all of our waterways to various
27:56
degrees depending on the sub rate of the body water

but but obviously those Mercury contaminants
28:08
particles are are are are kind of floating around in the water and because Zebra muscles filter the water that's
28:16
how they consume their nutrients all of that's getting trapped in the Zebra muscles and so any fish that eats zebra

muscles obviously is getting a like a super dose an injection of mercury every
28:30
day well but these guys aren't no so apparently it's not from eating it no they're not they don't eat the zebra so

I guess they don't so according to this so what's the deal here then yeah so there's a bacteria in the water that

converts mercury into the form that we can ingest so like it enters the water
28:46
in like its natural pure form and gets converted by bacteria into um methyl
28:53
Mercury right which is absorbed more toxic methyl Mercury yeah um
28:59
absorbed by fish and humans but what's the zebra muscle connection the mats that you see um those create a better

environment for that bacteria so more gets converted into that methyl Mercury siment the sediment without oxygen

there's no Oxygen on there and it makes it creates a better uh area for those things to for the Mercury to develop I

guess yeah you you're getting all that out of that that one article that's brilliant man yeah I'd have never th it

mhm okay think see the problem is um with guys like us like and Dean included

you and I and Dean included if we're fishing in Southern Ontario a lot of chances are we're fishing in you know

the great lakes or connected Waters to the Great Lakes you know start up and zebra muscles every and I and I do eat

these fish so I got I have to show some kind of concern and the two fish that I eat the most are perch and walleye you
29:51
know what I mean Pike would be next and I'm sure they're probably just about as bad as the rest of them so um we do have

circles we're so hung up on this term game fish and and if it's not a game Fish we

almost automatically poo poo it I'll bet you Tyler lives the same as us at Minnesota we're probably very close to

the same parallel he's got Walley he's got musky you know he's got a smallmouth bass a bit a large mouth bass probably
1:02:08
everybody talks about that but you're right there's so many other species that we could uh we could capitalize on for
1:02:14
sure Underdog fish is that a term that you've kind of coined or is this
1:02:20
something you picked up somewhere you know that's a great that's a great name for him um I just tend to call them
1:02:26
native fish okay um but it's you know anything's really better than rough fish
1:02:32
right is the thing but uh Native fish Underdog fish because there's really not
1:02:38
like a single thing that like ties them all together there's so many different you know groups of species in there
1:02:44
there's so much diversity in there and then you know we had this in Minnesota we renamed them and we were going
1:02:50
through all the possible things but there wasn't like one good term right

and we like we even threw out noname fish well Fisheries people were like we don't regulate non-game things a

noname there's a noname program for darters and little tiny things so it was
1:03:10
like oh man like what are we gonna call them um you know and it's like anything
1:03:15
yeah anything other than trash so there Bait fish and there's game fish that's about the only two classes isn't there

let's Bait fish and and let's talk about that right off the bat so have you talked to to the officials about how

they determine the validity of you know why is this fish a game fish and this
1:03:33
one's not did they give you do you know at all what goes into that process I
1:03:38
mean so it's just in law it's in statute who deter like how did they
1:03:45
determine that a walleye is a gamefish and a sucker is not like how do they
1:03:50
come up with that so in Minnesota I did a deep dive on this in Minnesota the
1:03:55
term Ru fish was first used in law in 1907 and there wasn't a list they were
1:04:01
just like you know Ruff fish and then there was like ah you know it if you see it right it was like they didn't have to
1:04:06
explain it right and then it wasn't until later they started putting they actually were like okay well the list is
1:04:13
and they're like ah the suckers Turtles uh you
1:04:18
know right like guys I think this list might not be scientific no it has non
1:04:24
fish on it so there's there is terminology called rough I think we have Co fish up here we but it's there's in
1:04:30
us it's rough fish is that what it's actually called in the regulations in in Most states some of them it's other some
1:04:37
it's noname but like in Minnesota it used to be rough um we ended up with a a new name they're now native rough fish I
1:04:44
just kind of skipped the rough part um but that that is basically native fish that grow large enough to be caught by
1:04:52
an angler um and then you know but have hav't been traditionally haven't been game fish but it it comes down to it's
1:04:59
just it's history right and it's like what you know back in the day train

companies would sell tickets for people to go on a fishing vacation they would stock trout at the end of the train line

so they could sell tickets for you to go on vacation great idea oh that's awesome it isene there yeah but you can kind of

look back at history and before that time right before 1900 or something

people just fish for food and for whatever they could catch and then people invented the vacation and then
1:05:33
now you've got to travel as far as you can to go catch a special fish true yeah right and I talked to
1:05:41
people all the time who are like oh yeah I fish up north I fish in the driftless
1:05:47
and I'm like oh you only fish four hours away from here do you ever fish at this Creek where you live oh no no no no no

no there's no game fish in there you know right and so they they're missing out you know I can take my kids fishing a
1:06:00
100 days a year and I could do it within a few miles of my house if I only fished
1:06:06
up north I'd get to go fishing three times yeah yeah that's a great Point that's another good point that we don't

even think of mean because you think where we're sitting right here you've got the aswa creek the all these Creeks

that after the steel head are done or before the salmon come in there's all kinds of fish that especially at the
1:06:23
mouths of these Creeks that you you could bicycle to it let alone and and we already mentioned suckers but they're

all full of suckers I mean just absolutely full kids can have a ball fishing suckers I grew up fishing

suckers man it was great yeah we did we did a lot of thato what species of suckers are you

guys talking about there we I did I did Red Horse suckers in Quebec and they are
1:06:45
big red hores are like they're massive um I don't know what we call them here
1:06:50
Tyler you know they're just your regular ofthe Mill white is there such a thing as a white sucker

there there is I just but Canada has 18 different species of suckers wow okay 18

I mean so yeah there you go right there I mean you can you can make a game

out of seeing how many you can get in a day right right there but you know that's that's one of the things that I

hate about this the categorization the lumping and like the the way the regulations were was that it kind of

killed people's curiosity you know you you got this one category and then people like oh well you know you can't

do any whatever and I'm like well that's 26 different species you know in Minnesota it was 26 different species I

don't know how many are regulated as Co fish up there but you got 18 species of suckers right off the bat so crazy no

idea right and it kind of like it kills the the Curiosity in there like there's
1:07:44
you know you start opening this Pandora's Box and you find out there's a lot more fish in there that we've been

overlooking than maybe we even you know ever dreamed yeah it can't be sized cuz

we we've talked about it Pete and I have talked about it uh over the years it can't be based on size you can't say

well because if it can't grow to gigantic proportions it can't be a game Fish because as we know there are some
1:08:08
big Co fish out there oh my God common common carp and and gar and stuff like that around here are huge the one thing

though the one thing that does stand out Tyler is consumability

and and that is that most of the game fish that we deemed to be sporty are
1:08:27
also a very good table fair I can't say that for a whole lot of these coarse
1:08:34
fish um because we don't know right or because mostly because we don't know don't know we've never tried it I've

never I've heard of pickled or canned sucker is supposed to be really good well well you've had sucker right you've
1:08:45
cooked prepared suck yeah tell us about that yeah uh they're just a little bony but

of course if you don't like bones in your food you can always have tofu um
1:08:56
well said so you know I guess some people want to complain about that you know um
1:09:03
but you know I I hunt and and fish and I I can break down a fish and deal with
1:09:09
the bones uh make it into fish patties is one really easy way to deal with the bones of a sucker um you can score the
1:09:16
fillets and fry them and the bones will soften right up um but the other thing too it's just I think a lot of it just

comes back to culture like you know in the Boneless of it you know Walley are you know the fish of Minnesota and it's

it is kind of hard to get excited about a fish though where the main positives are things they lack um they lack bones

and they lack flavor and I guess they lack fight too but you know it's like

way to that's very exciting wow what is the can you compare the sucker meat to a Walley let's say

what what is the difference uh you're hard pressed uh if you were given a boneless piece of

it um you they're they're both very mild flavored um it just comes down to it

just comes down to like the suckers do have more of those pin bones um you know
1:10:09
that's the main that's the main thing to me I mean I my favorite fish to eat is lake trout and you know then after lake

trout and white fish then it's basically just like the rest of them are you know kind of interchangeable you know one

thing that comes to mind that I I'm trying to come up with differences between um one thing that comes to mind

and correct me if I'm wrong Tyler is that what we deem to be gamefish are

usually carnivores Carnivores in the sense that they they will predate on themselves and on on other living

organisms whereas the non-game fish um
1:10:46
usually are vegetarians right both in have teeth and they're they're nasty and gar teeth they have teeth and they're
1:10:52
they eat fish there's probably a few more that we you know could go through but there's I think there's a couple

things you probably have in common you can a lot of them live in shallow water so a lot of times they're pretty visible

um warm water for most of them uh you know somewhat some some of the suckers
1:11:09
go into cold water trout streams but a lot of them live in warmer water um and
1:11:15
a lot of them feed you know more towards the bottom um right um and then also to
1:11:20
your point about the you know the like lurs um it is funny that a lot of the
1:11:26
game Fish right they eat artificials they eat you know spoons and flies and so I think there's kind of a built-in

market for selling stuff to catch those fish right right and so now you got something
1:11:40
to promote right there's a business there yeah right I I joke about like you know I'm I'm I'm not gonna get a a

sponsor because all I need is like Hooks and worms yeah um you you know what

though Tyler the carpet industry might argue with that because Europe as you know uh there's a whole industry there

for carb fish to buy goodies and I mean you think bass fishing is complex with

with the array of of goodies there for say you should see if you haven't uh in
1:12:13
Europe the carp fishing have you ever ter have you ever seen like a sportsman show over there in Europe that the a

carp show sort of thing it is absolutely insane they put so much work into the
1:12:25
and the equipment and you know so so but they're also really limited for the amount of like water they
1:12:32
have it's really dense they're pay lakes these fish are super super pressured you
1:12:38
know and I'm I'm literally I'm going to the Mississippi and you know uh it's it's a bit of worm it's a number eight
1:12:44
circle hook uh it's a fluro leader a swivel Sinker slide and I make my own
1:12:50
flexible sinkers and I'm set and then you know I'm catching fish yeah there's
1:12:55
not much more to it we I think the only time that I recall uh speaking of suckers uh like we

were just a few minutes ago the only time I recall ever even catching a sucker on uh a nonnatural or an artificial bait
1:13:11
was uh when we were fishing up north um I think for Walley or Smallmouth in that River and I caught I caught one onj
1:13:19
Lumberjack Lodge I caught one on a crankbait first time ever I'd seen a sucker actually hit a crankbait but I
1:13:24
think I might have right I might have just pissed them off because it was it was strange as
1:13:30
hell um got a double header a small mouth and a and a sucker at the same time yeah was fun the Smallmouth will
1:13:37
follow the suckers around they're looking for an easy meal I'm sucker fishing sometimes I actually have to
1:13:43
catch there'll be a smallmouth bass on both sides I have to catch both of them before the sucker has a chance to get my
1:13:49
Bas imagine that the things you have to go through that is horrible Tyler

how did you how did you get inv go through a lot of worms that way oh no kid true how did you get involved in

this uh we'll call it Underdog uh fishing well you know the thing is I'm
1:14:07
the kind of the black sheep in my family I I come from a long line of a very Avid hunters and I was the first one who
1:14:13
really took it like wanted to fish and I just started fishing wherever I could and I was fishing in a ditch in southern
1:14:21
Minnesota middle of cornfield and fishing for car fishing for whatever I
1:14:26
could and I caught a fish that I had no idea what it was it was a moai and it was bright silver it had teeth on its
1:14:34
tongue it came jumping out of the water and it looked like maybe it almost looked like a miniature turban like a
1:14:39
foot long right cannot over emphasize how silvery and shocking this fish was
1:14:46
in this muddy water and I didn't know what it was none of my uncles who knew everything knew what it was and that
1:14:53
fish convinced me that there were still Mysteries even in the ditches in
1:14:59
Minnesota you know and it turns out we have 165 species of fish here and
1:15:05
they're not all they're not all game fish right so um that fish like inspired
1:15:10
me to get really curious about all of those other fish and I found out that there's a lot of fish that are are big
1:15:16
enough to be exciting to catch or are you know uncommon enough to be exciting to catch or whatever and that if you can
1:15:22
catch if you can catch a buffalo or sucker or a bofin you can catch anything
1:15:28
yeah that's that's that's a good point now you're in the process of uh trying to get a a bill passed where where you
1:15:35
now are going to be calling these Critters native uh uh game Fish I'm
1:15:40
assuming um so we did pass that actually passed this this spring the native fish Bill yep and so what we did is we went
1:15:48
through because this phrase rough fish was in use for 117 years it had just
1:15:55
been put in our laws all over Minnesota in places where it didn't really belong
1:16:00
it was used instead of saying invasive species they would just say rough fish um so because it had one it just had one
1:16:09
species of invasive fish in this category but then they'd be like oh well you know you can build rough fish barriers you can do that whatever um and
1:16:16
so it was just copy pasted and we we got some people together who were interested
1:16:22
in this we had research on fish like Buffalo that show that they're living to be over 100 years old and we realize if
1:16:31
we're going to have actual management of these native fish because they do a lot of good things for us then we actually
1:16:37
have to solve all these various 42 times that this phrase has been used
1:16:45
in the law so we can actually have limits so we can like actually manage
1:16:50
them yeah same thing we went through with the common carp here right just
1:16:55
kind of we and we know how long and difficult of a road that was to travel oh boy was it ever you know what it's
1:17:01
good that Tyler can uh they can show us the Minnesota he can show us that it can be done too right so maybe we could work
1:17:07
on something here in our Ontario and our least or Canadian maybe you never know
1:17:13
right sure because we we should be managing native and invasive species differently I we can all agree on that
1:17:19
yeah you said you okay you're using invasive species with the native fish as
1:17:25
well yeah and and so they were combined they were Com comined when in fact they
1:17:31
were not n not invasive species at all and most of them had been years since
1:17:37
the beginning of time so did this bill kind of clarify that did did you get
1:17:43
them removed from the invasive species list for example yep so now there's an
1:17:48
invasive species category and there's a native fish category and so we can actually have separate regulations okay
1:17:54
for each category it's a crazy idea right like you're like you're gonna have you know
1:18:01
scientific management of a a natural resource yeah unlimited Harvest on the on the invasive ones and then like some
1:18:09
you know science and some basic sort of you know limits and regulations for the native you said you had one invasive in
1:18:16
that one you earlier what was that what species is it so the the common carp was grouped in with all those 26 native fish
1:18:22
okay and so okay and that that kind of just kind of dominated it a lot of people never read past that and then
1:18:28
they would think that Buffalo were KP right right I mean not I mean who would do such a thing yeah
1:18:35
exactly that's easy to do though you got to admit for those that that have never well the first Buffalo we saw we thought
1:18:41
it was a carp yeah you know what I mean that was that long ago exactly for sure right and that's exactly what happened
1:18:47
so then I'm out on the river bank and people are like oh look at those carp
1:18:52
I'm like those are actually a native fish those are big mouth Buffalo and then they like ah pretty sure it's a
1:18:59
carp and I'm like there was nothing in the reg's book right like that would
1:19:04
distinguish them yeah um and I realized it was going to take a long time to do that one person at a time on the
1:19:10
riverbank one of the problems I think that you ran into and certainly we've
1:19:16
run into up here one of the problems I think the the major cause of resistance
1:19:22
when it comes to recategorizing these things is and I know we just brush over it lightly but the amount of work that
1:19:30
has to go into it from that day forward once you get this recategorized as a
1:19:35
gamefish now you got all sorts of problems because as a game Fish it's got to have an open and closed season it's
1:19:40
got to have you know cre limits it's got to have all kinds of rules and regulations that now you have to have
1:19:46
people in place to make sure that they're adhering to the rules and regulations well all of this doesn't
1:19:52
exist if they're just lumped into you know corish or or whatever we want to
1:19:57
call them so there is a lot of work involved I know sometimes we don't even think of that that's great that's a
1:20:03
great point because ultimately what would be the payoff then if we did change that over so the payoff in my
1:20:10
opinion uh people can still fish for these guys no matter what right they can still fish I think more people would be
1:20:15
exposed to them if if we categorize something as a gamefish and and people
1:20:21
like the three of us start talking it up and saying wow a great sport this this is incredible we got to get everybody we
1:20:27
got to get kids in m so what happens is more and more people start utilizing them and as more and more people start
1:20:34
utilizing them more and more people are going to have to be put in place in order to manage it because even though
1:20:41
right now and I'll use in our case you know common carp right without any
1:20:47
regulations on common carp you can do whatever you want with them it doesn't really matter right and
1:20:55
and therefore there's no government involvement in terms of uh dollars spent
1:21:01
to manage them uh enforce regulations and all this stuff if you change that
1:21:09
automatically as the population grows to embrace this new sport or
1:21:15
sportfish the infrastructures have to be put in place to manage believe it or not
1:21:21
even if we don't think that you'd ever have to manage common carp you do right because now they become part of
1:21:27
mainstream you can take it another level up and I got a great story with this just this fall right before ice up uh I
1:21:34
was out with some some kids and a friend my kids and and what and one of these kids is is catching a Shad red hor not a
1:21:41
huge one 16 inches or so and the sun glints off it they have these metallic
1:21:46
scales and these bright red fins and somebody was walking their dog on the Mississippi Bank behind us and they go
1:21:53
they stopped is that a trout is there a trout and I'm like no this is a Shad red
1:21:59
horse and we landed the fish and we hold it up she's like what is that and I'm like it's a Shad red horse she's like
1:22:05
it's so beautiful I thought it was a trout I'm like well it's better than that because not only is it beautiful
1:22:11
but it it's actually the reason the Eagles are nesting here and it eats zebra muscles wow and so it's actually
1:22:18
you know and it's a native fish and she's like that's she was just so struck
1:22:23
by seeing this fish reflect in the sunlight with these bright red fins and
1:22:28
now she has a whole new appreciation for the river that she's been walking by good point right yeah and she she sees
1:22:35
something beautiful she thinks it's going to be a trout well there's other beautiful fish too yeah so now A Rose by

Any Other Name right there you go might that comes down to you know keeping trash out of the river and and doing
1:22:50
pickups and water quality protections and you know um Park UC and it's it's

when you say hey this stream just has course fish in it right you're telling people that the stream's not worth very

much yeah right right and that's not just for Anglers that's that's important for everybody well you know what if we

protected that stream you know maybe we like to see Eagles and maybe we like to see otter and maybe we like to see you
1:23:16
know Buffalo uh migrate in the spring H you reminded me of when you told the story of that soccer right there I was
1:23:22
fishing in Dunville you weren't on the shoo dance but I was with Steve Hard Castle and we caught the most bizarr
1:23:30
looking fish and I think is is there such a fish as a red rud something kind of a rud fish have you heard of that one
1:23:36
Tyler there is cuz this thing had the most orange fin just like that but it was it wasn't
1:23:41
a sucker it was like a really high thin body and it had this quill like fin up

the top I'm telling you this is I got I think I got pictures I'll I'll find the pictures of it and we C about four or

five of these quillback that's it quillback the R I think the RS were in
1:23:58
uh uh in niagar River but quillback that's what it was what a cool looking fish like it was like when I saw them I

thought and they fought like crazy they they bit our baits well we were fishing catfish and they bit our worms it was it

was insane and then I thought these things exist here and that's the only place I've ever seen it was in the what is the one in Dunville what's that river

is it the tames or is it yeah so very cool so know you see a quillback and

there's there's a couple different species um you see one of those and you would think that it belonged in a

tropical aquarium they're also really silvery and they got that really dramatic finin yeah they're gorgeous

yeah why haven't we seen more of it I don't know I don't know it must be a Lake Erie thing or a picture behind you that's the one that Pete took there it

is that's it wow yeah look at the Orange and the fins and stuff like that he's got a little sucker mouth looks like almost like a sheep head head there

looks kind of like a drum that's cool yeah yeah what a neat fish eh you got chubby little hands there brother those

I was I was working trade back then I think well and the thing too is you know people will catch you know they they go

out uh bass fishing or trow fishing or whatever and they they have a good day and then they catch one fish like that and they're like ah well you know uh

what's this for right and it's like well wait a minute which one was actually the challenge right like good point you

catch you catch 30 trout or 30 bass and you catch one sucker well why where's

the trophy you know a lot of people like to brag up how hard it is to catch the fish they're catching

right these are really smart fish I'm like really smart fish don't eat

metal good point that's funny Tyler you know somebody listening to this might say well if if you're so in love with

this coarse Vis we'll call it um then wouldn't it be better if he kept it

under WS you know why do you want to share this with your fellow Anglers why do you want more people saying what's

the outome positive outcome what's what's why would you want to do that because after all you might eventually

put it in Peril if people start fishing and overfishing them would you well I mean the the way a lot of these fish get

in Peril is habitat loss dams you know those sort of things um the and quality

of water obviously is a big thing right and some of these fish are are imperil um Bigmouth Buffalo and parts of Canada

are a species of concern um the copper the copper red horse is like an endangered species um and so um the you

know and the thing is binoculars don't work very well for fish yeah I can take you out you know you can go out bird

watching and Marvel at something you don't have to touch it you don't have to see it right um but if we can get you

know if people can catch a few of these things and there's some of them you know uh the red a lot of the red horse Shad
1:26:47
red horse and you know drunk yeah like take a few eat them um you know spread
1:26:52
it out you don't don't you don't have to eat Walley for every meal and and get people to care for it and and love it I

mean that's how that's how we've you know managed Wild Life and now we've got turkeys and white tailed deer

everywhere good point yeah great point it's it's it's worked for you know so

many other animals um and so and the fact of the matter is who's like we we

kind of need these fish uh they like I said that a lot of them meat Zebra muscles or they food for Eagles or um

they can modify habitat and transport nutrients like they're doing things we

actually need to happen in the environment if we're going to fish for or not you got a cobra behind you there Cobra black bambo is going to bite your

neck that's exactly what that look we got to put a little fake head on that you got to put you know what I see boys

if I if I I'm looking into the the future of this because it's it's going to take a long time for everything to

Pro process including people accepting and all but I see that as the future of fishing you know what I mean you opened

up more Minds into these fish and all that so these our kids of our kids are all of a sudden bass Grandpa Pete used

to fish for bass all the time I don't know why he's fishing for those things these things are a riot you know what I mean we can have a future of it because

right now it's going to be a tough as Tyler knows it's a tough go he's trying to get a bill passed and etc etc you're fighting a lot of battle there right

even though there's not a bunch of negativity it's just it's just a whatever sort of situation but there's you know it's hard to do yeah I think

the the fact of the matter is is I think people you know in in the last 10 years

you know um it's just been there's been a lot more positivity about it there's more research you know that is you know

keeps making the news at least in fish circles you know when when you find out that a fish in Minnesota or Canada is Liv into 127 years old people get

interested right um when you find out that that fish is subject to unlimited
1:28:46
Harvest you know that that like raises some eyebrows yeah um and like our
1:28:54
Minnesota ones migrating into Canada right so right um and so like you know
1:28:59
we can just bring the level up on this stuff and then the other thing is too is I think there's a lot less concern about

you know uh The Taste or or whatever like that it's like well if you're G to go out and catch bass all day and let
1:29:13
them all go you know maybe you want to go out and catch something else too um
1:29:19
there's really you know and I'm I'm not only a sucker fisherman you know I go to the the Waters and catch lake trout

Every Spring and I love it because you know they're pretty dumb fish with a big
1:29:31
mouth they're a lot of fun um sometimes I like a fish that doesn't bite um and
1:29:36
I'll sit and fish to a big mouth Buffalo for an hour and you know maybe get
1:29:43
one and that's fun too as I listen to this conversation and I earlier on I
1:29:49
said maybe you know it's the lack of consumption that that is keeping them sort of um below the radar but I think

that's wrong too because I can think of a lot of cases where consuming it is just
1:30:03
not even on the map and yet right and and we go to back to karp in Europe I

mean that's a sacred fish there's no consuming of those things right but you know what's glorified it and and and it

reminds me of a conversation I had with our good friend Roland uh Roland Martin a few years ago when we were talking

uh the publicity and the story they told with that in the Buffalo was was just an

catch it we've talked about Buffalo a couple times now in the show uh we've only seen one ever caught but we've done

a lot of carp fishing and you would think that we would have come across inadvertently uh a buffalo or two is

there a specific way to angle for them that's different than say traditional carp fishing yeah I have never caught

one like laying a worm on the bottom um I see them but they they're mouth

points forward right and they will swim around and eat plankton eat whatever it

is um I'm honestly not always sure what they're eating um I positive what

is they're like if they're feeding on the surface they're looking up and you

the the yeah and you're like they didn't act spooked but they also knew that wasn't

food right they'll be swimming in a straight line and then um so the trick

is is to kind of see where like the water's swirling around and where like

that before the fish show up and then you have to have your perfect dead drift

because they they're not going to chase food they don't want anything to chase they don't want anything that's even like moving it seems so you get a

perfect dead drift and then oh if you're if you guess right a buffalo will come up and start coming down this line and

they'll they'll find your your fly um sometimes I use a chubby Chernobyl

sometimes I use a worm depends on what Rod I'm holding that day and

they'll they'll take it every once in a while if you get a really aggressive one I've seen them turn as much as three

Spinner Fall um and they're really going crazy sometimes they will they will turn

slightly and and take a fly that that looks good but the the drift has to be

like perfect and that's I know I know Joe mentioned I use a like a a long C pole um so I have an 18 foot

long Japanese Rod weighs four ounces feels like a magic wand and I can do a

perfect drift no line on the surface so no mending um and because yeah these fish

are constantly afraid of like eagles right they're right up there at the surface so any splashing or whatever can

make them all spook um so yeah you roll cast is like a tricky thing to pull off

without uh without spooking them you you got to you got to have nice nice clean

like you got to wait for it to kind of forget again um they're super tricky fish to catch hence why we have not

I've heard now maybe it's not the same buffalo fish but I've heard heard people in Texas Fishing big buffalo down there
