Striper Fishing in the WORLD'S LARGEST TIDES! | The Fish'n Canada Show
15K views
Mar 20, 2025
In this Fish’n Canada episode, Pete and Nik join up to fish Striped Bass on the famed Bay of Fundy and in particular, the innermost section of the bay, called the Minas Basin. Here the 50’ tide rushes in and back out again twice a day, constantly moving mountains of ocean water and the billions of fish that are along for the ride. Pete and Nik drop 26 ounces of weight to hold a chunk of cut bait just off the bottom and are constantly getting “bit” throughout their adventure… and it’s not just Stripers down there!

feels heavy this is one ugly fish that's
0:04
got apparently got a bit of a stinger on
0:05
them Steve everyone died from something

0:08
that so we could be having some fun here
0:10

1:32
hi everybody and welcome to yet another
1:34
exciting fishing Canada episode now you
1:36
might say that Today's show takes place
1:38
on the most unique water body on planet
1:41
Earth the water-based phenomenon called
1:45
the Bay of fund's Midas Basin here in
1:48
the province of Nova Scotia in a country
1:51
that boasts several aquatic wonders like
1:53
niagar Falls largest waterfall in North
1:56
America by volume and width the Great
1:58
Lakes the largest group of freshwater
2:01
lakes in North America which includes
2:03
Lake Superior considered the largest
2:05
lake in North America the McKenzie river
2:08
the longest river system in Canada and
2:11
great Slave Lake the deepest lake in
2:14
North America the Bay of fundi fits
2:16
perfectly alongside each and every one
2:18
of this list let me tell you why the Bay
2:21
of fundi located between the Canadian
2:24
provinces of New Brunswick and Nova
2:25
Scotia is famous for having the highest
2:28
tide range in the world
2:30
these Tides can reach up to 16 M or over
2:33
50 ft this is an incredible amount of
2:36
water that is funneled into and out of
2:38
the bay in a single day and Tide changes
2:42
here occur twice a day that's two high
2:45
tides and two low
2:47
tides well if you're anything like me
2:49
you're probably wondering just how much
2:51
water flows in and out of the bay while
2:54
based on a 14 M average tide the total
2:57
volume of water moving in and out of the
2:59
Bay during one title change is estimated
3:03
to be around 110 billion tons it said to
3:08
have a force equal to 8,000 locomotives
3:11
or 25 million horses now that's a lot of
3:16
hay moving on to the fishing portion of
3:18
this trip Pete Nick have teamed up and
3:20
are taking on the task of dealing with
3:22
the baa Fundy and minus Basin title
3:25
influence stripe bass you better strap
3:28
hit boys if you're a longtime viewer of
3:31
the fishing Canada show you may remember
3:33
Nick and I fishing this area in 2019 we
3:36
hooked up with Greg Bello from Bass Barn
3:39
Charters and had a fantastic trip the
3:41
striper action was
3:43
non-stop since then I hear that Greg has
3:46
expanded on his fishing areas so the
3:48
boys get to try their hand at some new
3:50
water and get this with our new
3:53
Princecraft boat that's right our 20ft
3:56
freshwater fishing machine in this
3:58
gigantic ocean Bay what could possibly
4:02
go
4:03
wrong launching a boat on a daily basis
4:05
in the Bay of Fundy or in today's case
4:08
the minus Basin the headwaters of funy
4:10
is a strategic ordeal yes there's
4:13
strategy to backing up a boat trailer
4:16
yes there's strategy to prepping your
4:17
rig so that you don't hold up other
4:19
Anglers but this strategy if done
4:22
improperly will leave you high and dry
4:26
literally with the tides being so high
4:28
yet consistently changing the boat
4:31
launches around here are only usable at
4:33
certain times of day when they're not
4:35
usable there is dry as a bone It's
4:39
actually an incredible site to
4:41
[Music]
4:49
see so with the incoming tide allowing
4:51
the Princecraft to finally be launched
4:54
and Pete and Nick all rigged up and
4:56
ready to roll the adventure begins now
4:59
they're going to try and hit two
5:00
different areas over the course of the
5:02
next 2 days that's because the tides cut
5:05
fishing hours down immensely plus the
5:07
areas are long distance apart their
5:10
first area is close to where Nick and I
5:12
fished on our last time here it's a
5:14
series of rock piles that believe it or
5:16
not used to be targets for our Canadian
5:19
military gunning practice luckily for
5:22
the boys that's a thing of the
5:25
[Music]
5:26
past little guy little guy be careful
5:30
really care remember your weights are
5:31
really high by yes
5:34
by T come here here we go all right
5:38
Mickey B on the stripe I'm going to I'm
5:41
going to give you some line to get that
5:43
those weights on the floor thank you you
5:45
can go now good all right fella we got
5:48
to do some surgery now he's going to go
5:50
right in the lake give him a little push
5:52
just give him a little push byebye there
5:55
you go see Catch release all one good
5:58
system Release Technique new Release
6:01
Technique slide them in let them
6:03
[Music]
6:06
go go Pete got one Nick how's that one
6:09
feel I about the same as all the other
6:11
little fell nice nice I like that these
6:14
reels are set to for their drag to rip
6:18
at probably anything less than 10 lbs
6:20
would have a chance to pull the drags
6:22
out of these things so 15 and up
6:24
probably is when they start pulling the
6:25
drag Nick just pull your pull your line
6:27
that way he's going sideways for some
6:29
reason I don't know it's a skate or oh
6:31
he just pulled a little bit of drag that
6:32
guy he's right here now he's not
6:34
probably not big I can't see him being
6:36
well he's pulling good though like he's
6:39
not huge but he's right here at the boat
6:40
so I haven't seen him yet he's swimming
6:43
sideways to us that's a nice one Nick
6:44
we'll get the net on him all right he's
6:46
not bad I'm ain't going to bring it you
6:48
go behind him and I'll bring him back to
6:49
you see that like see that watch yes sir
6:52
no no yep you got brother good job bring
6:55
him right who I got you all the way up
6:59
all the way is something and set your
7:01
bum down bum is being sat this is what
7:04
these guys hate right
7:05
here see but we got them I would highly
7:08
advise if you're right-handed lip them
7:11
with your right hand if you're
7:12
left-handed lip them with your strongest
7:13
hand because this guy is not big but
7:16
I'll tell you what he's bad he's mean
7:19
look the purple Sheen in those things
7:21
absolutely gorgeous fish built to fight
7:24
delicious eating this is a keeper I
7:26
would say this is pretty close to a
7:28
keeper 27 in be very close and uh I wish
7:31
they were a little smaller to keep this
7:33
is the max that'd be perfect but it's uh
7:36
it is what it is nice eating mouth right
7:39
there and eating machine Beauty eating
7:41
machine going back see yeah
7:44
buddy and and these release so good
7:47
these fish release so well it's unreal
7:48
cuz they're just tough they're just
7:50
ocean fish are tougher by far than
7:53
freshwater fish I don't care you talk
7:55
about muskies you know what 90% of the
7:58
ocean fish are tougher than muskies
7:59
honestly they have live a tougher life
8:01
so let's keep
8:03
going since the boys are fishing a
8:05
portion of the Atlantic Ocean stripers
8:07
aren't the only thing that'll be biting
8:09
chunks of real bait in fact you never
8:12
know what'll hit throughout the course
8:14
of a fishing day on this
8:16
water feels heavy doggy doggy could be a
8:19
doggy o oh I definitely got something on
8:21
the end of
8:23
this wa a steak or a skate e oh I got
8:28
him in the side that's why he feels
8:30
weird well I can confidently say that's
8:33
my first sting we got to be careful yeah
8:34
we got to be careful with his Ray right
8:36
yeah so this is one ugly fish that's got
8:39
apparently got a bit of a stinger on him
8:41
so I am going to do my best to keep him
8:43
just like the dog fish around here oh
8:45
he's got a snag I snagged him right on
8:47
the side that is one weird looking dude
8:50
he's got all kinds of spikes on the side
8:53
of them and all that but that apparently
8:55
that uh that little tail pin of his has
8:58
got some potential
9:01
like let's just say it's potential like
9:02
voltage it'll get you good oh watch he's
9:05
trying to get you with that tail Pete
9:07
that's what they do right look at them
9:09
trying to get me oh yeah ain't being shy
9:11
about
9:13
it you got to get
9:15
close look at that look at that Stinger
9:17
coming right up there right for you what
9:19
do you do when you live on a shoe you
9:21
act like a
9:23
heel like I'm doing right
9:25
now I need about a 6ot long pair of
9:28
needle no I just dropped my needle
9:32
okay I'm going to cut the line just
9:33
going to cut that off folks oh there's
9:36
Rusty let's talk to Angelo about
9:40
it
9:43
bye-bye I I how man Steve everyone died
9:47
from something like that I ain't dying
9:48
out here like that I'll retie that hook
9:50
and no and no problem you know what's
9:52
funny about that one was that it felt
9:54
like your first gate ever first gate
9:55
ever good job buddy that felt like
9:57
something hit me and then there was
9:58
nothing for a long long time there was
10:00
nothing so I just I was just reeling
10:02
back in to retie and put some new uh
10:04
some new Herring on and you said of felt
10:06
heavy something like extras on
10:08
them nice my my live release of the
10:11
pliers too that's pretty you know what
10:13
you're just making an offering to the
10:14
fish the wimpiest fisherman of all
10:17
[Music]
10:25
time so as you can probably tell by now
10:28
fishing in the strong incoming and
10:29
outgoing Tides can be quite a chore it
10:32
takes an almost ridiculous amount of
10:34
weight to get to the bottom where the
10:35
fish are with the slack tide the Garin
10:38
screen lights up with fish it's the
10:41
perfect storm of Tide fishing we're
10:43
sitting still pretty much is the tide is
10:46
turning to
10:47
slack and uh and it's hard to run the
10:49
bait cuz we're running 16 o 10 o what 16
10:52
o weights as the light as we're running
10:54
today so I said I just looked at the
10:56
Garment it's showing it's lit up with
10:58
fish
10:59
I said give me that Yuri Rod I had a
11:01
Yuri Rod set up here like it's a heavy
11:05
duty swimbait Rod I might want to loosen
11:07
that drag a bit as soon as I threw it
11:09
out no bait on it at all I got two or
11:12
three hits and then I let it drop down
11:14
more before it even hit the bottom and
11:15
this guy cracked it so we could be
11:17
having some fun here for the next hour
11:18
buddy that'd be fun I'm going to bring
11:19
him into your NEP there he comes got him
11:22
good Scoop buddy
11:26
woo that is fun that was fun dude I'm
11:29
going to get you on this bite you're
11:30
going to love it push it yeah there you
11:32
got you got him all right he is free not
11:34
a big one but I'll tell you that's a
11:36
satisfactory fish right there that's fun
11:38
it's not even a keeper that's a 25 in
11:40
probably like that but and and on that
11:42
light now I mean this is light tackle
11:44
where you it's heavy duty Bass Gear
11:46
light light light musky gear and really
11:48
light for these guys but boy that was a
11:50
fun fight right there and he cracked it
11:51
butd you're going to have some fun we
11:52
get going here we
11:54
[Music]
11:57
go so after a fun-filled high tide
12:00
striper adventure and a few mini sharks
12:03
and skates thrown into the boot the boys
12:05
call it a day and head back to home base
12:08
now this is normally the time to kick
12:10
back relax and regroup however since
12:13
it's not every day you get a chance at
12:15
this incredible NOA Scotia fishery why
12:18
not take advantage of the Night Bite and
12:20
do some surf casting directly in front
12:22
of their Cottage accommodations on the
12:24
shore of the minus basin
12:30
little strip bass off the
12:33
shore I don't need the net brother we're
12:35
good you got a little guy pity
12:40
yeah a little striper off the shore we
12:43
just set up Nick and I just set up it's
12:44
perfect it's high tide right now at the
12:47
peak of high tide that's why we're
12:48
standing on these rocks here once this
12:51
starts going out you'll see a difference
12:52
here you're going to see all the Beats
12:53
start to show up all these little rocks
12:55
start to show up and uh and yeah it's uh
12:58
and we'll be back business again back on
13:00
the shore make it a little easier not
13:01
having to stand on these rocks but this
13:03
Bay is loaded with fish here you go
13:08
Bud and there he is striper woo smallest
13:13
one I think we've got don't let them
13:15
smash the Rocks no sir no sir kind to
13:17
your fish you okay or do you want me
13:19
over there I should be get it okay but
13:21
perfect oh there we go that made that
13:24
easy okay just watch that weight that's
13:27
the biggest problem you'll have with the
13:28
weight
13:29
and I think that's the smallest one
13:31
we've got this whole trip and I'll tell
13:33
you it's still fun they're still good
13:35
and uh I'm going to go get a bigger one
13:37
right now at a
13:38
boy
13:45
[Music]
13:48
bye-bye this episode's hot spot is where
13:50
Pete Nick had a great day strike bass
13:53
fishing on the minus Basin the way point
13:55
on your screen will get you right there
13:58
as you can probably tell from this
13:59
episode The Tide and the weather dictate
14:02
when you can get out there the boys
14:04
caught their stripers on chunks of
14:06
Frozen and then thaw hering Amanda from
14:09
Bass Barn Chargers prepares and sells
14:11
the best bait on the bait and trust us
14:14
good bait is the key to success the
14:17
presentation is to Anchor the boat on a
14:19
potential Hot Spot drop your bait until
14:21
you hit the bottom Engage The spool and
14:24
wait for a bite staying on the bottom is
14:27
an absolute must you can also try Pete's
14:30
method when the slack tide occurs and
14:32
that's casting a jigging a lure like his
14:34
yzui Hydro monster shot it's a totally
14:37
different and fun way to catch these
14:39
stripers for more hotpots like this one
14:42
check out fishing
14:53
canada.com after a good sleep and a
14:56
hearty East Coast breakfast Pete and
14:58
Nick are back at had it for their final
15:00
day the weather has turned for the
15:02
better with the wind dying down
15:04
dramatically something we rarely get to
15:07
say this time the boys can take the
15:09
Princecraft even further into the Basin
15:11
and test some new
15:12
[Music]
15:15
water okay Nikki hooked up boys and
15:18
girls here we go how's he feeling not
15:20
bad not big not giant I don't think but
15:23
we'll
15:24
see we will see well we got our biggest
15:27
issue was going to be it's hot by the
15:29
way you can see I just took all my gear
15:30
off one of the issues might be our power
15:32
poles I'm going to keep them as far this
15:34
way yeah you're doing a great job doing
15:35
a great job buddy all our power P if
15:37
these get a big fish he might want to go
15:38
around here and we got to go up easy
15:41
buddy how you looking how you looking
15:44
looking good feeling
15:47
good there he is nice one bring him over
15:49
bring him up forward a bit like walking
15:51
up a bit yeah got got him buddy good job
15:55
that's a good way to start the day right
15:56
there I think so careful there go all
15:59
right put that aside now is your fish
16:01
yeah you got to go here under the belly
16:02
here got you here okay that's good yeah
16:05
hold the camera nice little fish start
16:08
the day it's a good one to start the day
16:09
that's probably a keeper 27 in you
16:11
squeeze the tail that's probably just on
16:13
that keeper range so very nice I'm sorry
16:15
for all the idiots yelling over there
16:18
round but that's all good okay bud throw
16:19
them back yours the goal we'll get you
16:23
later Knuckles Knuckles good job thanks
16:26
nice job buddy
16:30
[Music]
16:32
come on
16:33
fishy Bo they can Slackline you too they
16:36
swim fast these oh they're quick man
16:38
yeah that's a nice fish Mr Bowman that's
16:40
not
16:41
bad got
16:44
him oh my weight I lost a weight look at
16:47
that wa oh boy let me close that off
16:50
right
16:52
now safe there little striper they're
16:56
such a perfect looking fish like they're
16:58
such a cool walleye sort of shape to
17:00
them but all the stripes and all that
17:02
this guy he's got straight Stripes oh no
17:04
they're they're crooked on that side
17:06
this side they're all straight so they
17:08
say there's sometimes they're different
17:10
areas they come from or maybe a strain
17:13
whatever they call it but Co purple on
17:15
them too oh yeah there's purplish in
17:16
them yeah such a neat looking fish going
17:19
back see you
17:21
bud and they released real well
17:25
too very quick little thing about what
17:28
we're doing here today we're running
17:29
heavy duty braid so yui super braid you
17:32
know it's 100 lb is or whatever but
17:34
here's the key is you run these Flor
17:35
carbon leaders this is 60 lb that's the
17:38
lightest you would use and more than
17:39
likely this is HD carbon this is 100 lb
17:42
test this is what these guys use out
17:43
here all the time 100 lb test to catch
17:46
sometimes only a 2 3 lb striper well
17:48
that's the deal right there you need
17:49
that for that Clarity you know just in a
17:52
little bit of stretch and the whole N9
17:53
yards because you're dying up a swivel
17:55
to a slider etc etc so yeah pretty cool
18:00
but you need
18:01
[Music]
18:03
it oh it's a good one boys buddy this
18:06
feels a lot bigger than that last one
18:08
perfect don't give me any slack okay
18:10
slack just nice what are you doing I
18:13
don't know why are you reeling like that
18:14
I couldn't tell you right don't do that
18:15
just pull pull and then and then not
18:17
fast slowly yeah slowly pull slowly reel
18:20
oh maybe he's still there how's he
18:23
feeling feels good there he is another
18:26
little guy fought better than the last
18:28
one yeah bring him right around now
18:30
towards me up up high
18:33
oh good job good job okay all righty you
18:38
hang on to the net I'll do the honors on
18:41
