this episode of Outdoor Journal radio is brought to you in part by the invasive species Center protecting Canada's land
0:13
and water from invasive species and sale the ultimate destination for your
0:18
Outdoor Adventures well hello there and hello there hello there hello there uh welcome
0:26
to the program thanks for joining us again I'm Angel he is Peter hello there uh Roba Nick and Dean come on now behind
0:34
the scenes making [ __ ] happen yeah a bunch of [ __ ] Outdoor Journal of
0:40
Radio podcast making [ __ ] happen vacations this is uh we're we're we're
0:47
at the uh tail end of vacation season here at my Pine post Productions yes
0:54
indeed everybody including Dino just came back including Angelo well oh I
1:00
wouldn't call that a vacation that was more like a working vacation for me here we
1:07
go uh but yeah it is the season so where did what did you do what do you do
1:13
people want they want to know I get I get this quite a bit I get uh we we
1:20
usually go cottaging right either friends Cottages or family Cottage or whatever so um and I is that is is that
1:26
because you don't want to spend the big bucks going to like a resort or are taking the the family you know away on
1:32
an all-inclusive and like some exotic land or is that cuz you're too too too
1:39
emotionally involved with the dollar like what is the reason for that I I'd have to say my family absolutely loves
1:46
going to the cottage without question loves it they've grown up with it they've done all that
1:52
so um and why would you go to Florida in the middle of the summer right summer holiday I'm just saying I'm talking
1:58
taking them spend a couple of bucks and take them to I don't know Costa Rica or someplace or the Canary Islands or
2:06
Europe go on a European Vacation my wife and I are going to do that when I'm rid of you we're going to do that when
2:12
you're rid of me what do you mean you're rid of me you my life can you know put some time oh you're waiting you're
2:17
waiting for that moment no not really good luck with that one yeah so yeah
2:23
that's what we do we do a lot of cottaging and uh and it's fun right you know so we uh do a lot of drinking no I
2:29
I I I bring home a lot of beer lately like I I I bring a lot with me I just don't
2:35
drink it I know or leave it there whatever I I just don't drink it as much I anticipate drinking a good amount and
2:41
don't do it anymore so a lot of things as you get older you find you anticipate you go in with hope I smoked enough
2:47
cigars though I made up one or two big boys a day I like that that's kind of nice one or two a day sometimes too not
2:53
very often but definitely I always make sure I'm going to have a big cigar a day you know what I mean a nice time timing
3:00
is everything for those right cuz it's an hour it's an hour plus right so you have to make sure do you build your day
3:05
around that that cigar like you say okay at I'm going to have that cigar at noon no no you can't do how does it work you
3:11
can't do that the problem the problem with the cigar you have to do it outside right and the problem with the cotage
3:18
I'm assuming I'm assuming at the cottage you're outside most of the time right no you're in a cottage you have a cottage you eat inside and all that stuff too
3:24
right of course you do right um we I got a buddy that's got a cottage you know the Buddy see the name but he's got the
3:31
you'd rather be inside than outside he's got a he's got a the basement's got a stage with a full set of instruments
3:36
electric guitars bass guitar drum kit beside that he's got a slate pool table he's got a 72in TV he's got a bar set up
3:44
downstairs like that that's just the downstairs of the cottage so you sometimes you don't mind staying in if it's a rainy day or whatever like that
3:50
the cigar thing you can't the problem with when you're at a cottage you're camping or whatever you're outside is in
3:56
Ontario is that soon as that dark hits the mosquitoes come out ridiculous even to this day like right now this but it
4:02
wasn't a bad year no but this is the time they come out it gets bad at that time right so you can't enjoy your cigar
4:07
over there so you got to so I had to make sure I did it earlier in the day so I'd go fishing in the morning or something before everybody gets up so
4:13
that's my plan I get up I get up I go fishing in the mornings and then when everybody gets up I I drive back and I have brunch or something like that and
4:20
then the day Carries On from there whatever we done do so part of that my cigar a better
4:25
place on God's green earth to smoke a
4:30
cigar than on the bow of a boat when you're you know especially
4:36
when you're exploring new water and you're trying to put together a pattern and and the weather is cooperating and
4:42
it just is there a better place more enjoyable it's very but see not for me because see that's why I love it I know
4:47
I like that with and you and I share that time together but the problem is you're you get oh I got to cast here I
4:54
got a cast there that cigar is in your mouth and you take an extra haul and and you're not enjoying your cigar you
4:59
everything else versus going back to the cottage sitting at down at the deck and with a beer cold beer you know and
5:05
you're just sitting there looking at the lake and say I enjoy this cigar and that's why you have to have two you have
5:11
to have one on the bow of the boat that's probably what I I didn't even realize you got me you you you you you
5:16
figured out my whole uh repertoire of cigar cigar rep I man should put by the
5:22
way any you kids watching don't smoke cigars don't smoke cigars don't smoke anything don't smoke no although it's
5:28
perfectly legal to smoke everything now but don't smoke anything but that's why
5:34
there should be no pressure on if and how and when you smoke a cigar you know
5:43
how there's always that stigma attached to cigar smoke oh GE should I smoke now I don't know whether that they might not
5:50
like it there should be no whole barred
5:55
true yeah you got make when it com to SM if I want to smoke a cigar I think I should smoke a cigar to make it that way
6:00
yeah maybe it's cuz I'm getting old I think there's a lot of things that you use that excuse for right there my
6:05
brother just to let you know anyways just to let you know uh let us know where you uh smoke a cigar Dino how
6:12
about yourself I know you don't participate in cigar smoking I saw you once or twice he likes
6:18
your art Duos he he does like the short story he won't like I've given him the big the bigger ones a robo those and
6:24
he's no it's too much I don't want I know it's the perfect smoke isn't it it's the perfect size minutes you're in
6:30
and you're out right like a sa like a sailor on a Friday night like a sailor on a Friday night our two our to of the
6:38
Sailor well he was Hemingway it's called a Hemingway short story or T I had a very quickly though I had a couple
6:44
instances and I'll just end on this so on my holidays one the one uh when we were done the cottage thing I did one
6:51
more day I said pety is going to take a fishing day but I'm going elsewhere so I drove to a lake that I've never been to
6:56
before and uh in was doing so I had to stop and get some ice and I stopped there and at a store and the guy hey
7:02
you're fishing dude there yeah how you doing buddy yeah yeah so he sees my truck all packed with [ __ ] that I got to bring home right that but he says you're
7:08
going home I said no no I'm going to I got to hit a lake I'm going fishing today he so all your day off you go fishing are you kidding me say yes but I
7:16
do buddy I had an opposite experience because funny we we obviously get
7:24
recognized a lot um and people do always say what are you doing here like in a
7:30
grocery store or at a at an emergency ward in a hosital you doing here you know what I mean like I always say like
7:36
you like you don't fit into this picture so on uh the day be before I left for my
7:42
vacation I uh I went to uh a car uh event um uh autof Fest or something was
7:50
called and so I've got my car up there and and the one here in aswa no they moved it to Oxbridge oh okay huge event
7:58
massive event so anyway so I drove up there and and like people are always
8:06
shocked that you would be involved in something other than fishing CU I'm sitting there Nick and I Nick was with me I'm sitting there you you know with
8:12
my car and these two guys tell everybody a car you got oh I've got a little uh
8:18
come on a nice little Camaro give me a hell yeah what year with that car will
8:23
be uh it could be a 69 Z28 okay kind of motor be in that car 302 302 an M21 M21
8:32
yeah single carb dual carb it only came one way baby okay okay
8:39
so anyway so we're sitting there and uh these two guys come up and they love the car and him and Han and and I'm letting
8:49
them do their thing you know letting it breathe the situation breathe a little bit before I walk in on the situation
8:55
and and see if they've got any questions and so I'm sitting got like lawn chairs
9:01
away from the car sitting back here see you having a cigar I was I was having a cigar actually I was this Gods son I'm
9:08
having a cigar and these two guys are drooling on my car and they're touching it
9:14
and and so I get up as I'm getting up he's he's the the one guy looks at me
9:22
and he wants to talk to me but something happened something
9:29
happened that completely screwed him up from like he probably had three or four questions
9:35
already in line you know car questions right but he completely lost his
9:40
[ __ ] when he looked at me recognize you and he knew he knew me you didn't have
9:47
any fishing Canada paraphernalia on no I've got my Harley-Davidson uh hat sort
9:52
of backwards that that that drooping hat and I got I got a meum auto auction
9:57
t-shirt on and uh he just he knew he knew something
10:05
was up he's I know you I well good for
10:11
you I'd let him on it was perfect I said good for no no he I know you where do I
10:17
know you from you freaked him out right there and just then just then his buddy
10:23
turned around he heard the commotion he said for God's sakes it's the fishing
10:28
guy the fish that's what we always get to is the fishing guy it's never an it's never Pete the fishing guy just freaked out
10:36
needless to say there was no car questions or answers at that point it just went totally but he he did say
10:42
first thing he said when he got his wits about it what the hell are you doing here you know as if to say because it
10:48
was Saturday morning as if to say like Saturday morning you should be on TV doing your fishing show yeah yeah yeah
10:54
no we get it all the time for any we love we're not making fun guys trust me we love it we love it we we live we work
11:03
those 12 and 14 hour days and those 10 days stints out in the field in all
11:09
kinds of condition year in and year out for that very moment when
11:14
you say I know you yeah yeah and it always turns into always turns into a
11:21
good conversation afterwards it always you know it goes into the fishing World finally you guys talk cars but I'm sure
11:26
you eventually you get a little bit of fish talk in there oh always turns into fishing talk and it's great information you know you you can help them if they
11:33
want if they're if they know a local lake or whatever hey you know what Dan and Pete there there's some bass over
11:39
there where's that Lake again what you say so what happened because of this chance meeting the one guy who
11:46
originally was in shock he took me aside at one point and
11:52
the other guy his buddy uh was talking to Nick and he says you got to help my buddy you got to help him he's got a kid
11:59
who's screaming out dad take me fishing and he's not doing it and he used to
12:06
fish as a kid his dad took him out all the time and now he's not doing you got to talk to my buddy you've got to
12:12
convince him that he's got and so the conversation for the most part after
12:17
that was me you know talking to this guy he's got a 14-year-old kid who wants to go
12:23
fishing and Dad's saying he doesn't have time and like it like this whole thing
12:29
by the time I was finished I think Buddy was ready to buy a boat beautiful so beautiful uh if you're watching this
12:35
podcast uh I apologize I don't remember your names I barely remember mine uh but
12:42
uh it was great talking to you and they were the only ones this this is surprise there was thousands of people there
12:47
literally thousands of people these were the only ones who actually came out and said approach I
12:54
know you I mean there were obviously countless others that you could see but but it's hard to do you know that it's
13:01
it's hard to oh we see it I I know that's for every one of yours you saw
13:06
there's 10 more that won't say word it's hard for them to to come over and I but I I'm telling you if you ever see any
13:12
either one of us anywhere don't hesitate don't think oh my God I can't I I don't
13:18
want to intrude on it no that's right that's Nirvana for us that's where we
13:24
live that's our Zone especially if you're a smoking hot female because they never come over and you know I mean
13:30
smoking cigars smoking cigar smoking hot smoking cigars please come on over and
13:36
join us for a cigar uh Dean what' you do for your vacation I fished ah there's a
13:43
shock there's a shocker where'd you go good man um I have a cabin up north in Ontario like8 hours north of here in
13:50
oswa um the cabin is in aswa 8 hours hours North from asa8 hours around
13:56
driving around aswa again traffic B traffic around here now lately yeah so I went up there I go up
14:02
like once a year it's only worth like you need to take more time to make it worthwhile cuz it's just it's a whole
14:07
day in a whole day out who can afford to have a cabin for one day a year I can't
14:13
it's a land lease it's been in my family forever oh it's not yours personally no no it's a it's a family thing okay and
14:21
and and and so you went there by yourself no my dad and my brother and then two friends went up too awesome
14:27
family thing bun beds in this little cabin oh my God any snoring going on oh nonstop all kinds of sounds sounds all
14:34
kinds of sounds a little bit of farting a little bit of snoring I was going to say there is an Essence oh there's an
14:40
Essence there is an Essence that that that permeates little cabins like that after
14:48
about 3 days of Five Guys sleeping in one room in bunk
14:55
beds there's a a an aura about it or an
15:01
aroma I don't know which one it is but there is something magical that happens in that little Shack that [ __ ] and as
15:07
soon as you walk in it hits you right in the face yeah if somebody else walked in there it' probably be a bit of a shock
15:14
my God you got used to it after a few days and you got to drink a few beers to make sure you go to sleep right you got to you got to have a little bit sleeping
15:21
be with that beer could you imagine uh Steve this our buddy uh if we were trapped in
15:28
that situation how much whiskey we would have Steve would not be invited okay as as much as we love him and as much as he
15:34
loves fishing if we're going to be with him for the next 3 weeks it was one room cabin Steve and no electricity Steve
15:40
would not be invited we just you can't do it it's like uh it would be like uh I
15:45
don't know I don't even know what it would be like walking on glass with bare feet it would be like okay go over there the fish are over there but you got to
15:51
walk across this glass H I might just leave those fish alone then uh lots of fishing lots of fish
15:58
caught lots of fish food preparation typ it was great we did we did mostly Pike up there the smalles are huge but we eat
16:04
a lot of the pike ni um hasn't been walleye up there in a long time except for last year uh we caught a bunch last
16:11
year and I was hoping we'd find more this year but the weather was kind of weird like 40 km winds the entire time
16:18
every freaking day it's nuts like that we talked about on a podcast that was like that down here too by way you didn't miss it I mean it wasn't just up
16:24
you yeah it was bad all last we it was brutal nonstop so like the walleye was tough the bass were they were everywhere
16:30
so that was good and then we ate Pike almost every day nice yeah did you eat any smalles cuz you normally like the no
16:35
I nor no we didn't actually oh good I I normally only only keep them if they're going to die right and everyone was
16:43
setting the hook properly so good no dead fish excellent a good time was had by all by sounds of it our vacations are
16:50
now behind us we are better people for them and we are eagerly anticipating our
16:55
next one yeah come on now yeah well but you you're you're you haven't
17:01
done yours yet you're going very soon right another few weeks three weeks four weeks something like that
17:07
cool all right we better do a podcast we better do a show here that's what we came here for today I want to tell you
17:13
something uh speaking about anticipation for vacations and stuff uh Our Guest
17:20
today is highly anticipated by both Peter and I we've known this man for the
17:26
better part of 30 years uh in and he's been involved in this industry if not even
17:32
more uh but he's got some news I've got some news everybody's got some news to
17:38
share about him uh he is Ron James uh formerly a fish TV he's on the Permanent
17:46
Vacation he's permanently vacationing um down on the east coast of Canada uh we
17:52
had a chance to uh talk to him see if he'd come on a show and he's agreed to come on the show he's going to be joining us here very shortly uh one
17:58
wonderful man co-host on fish TV for over 20 years with our good friend Leo
18:05
stacos who by the way has refused to come on this show numerous times there's
18:12
a bunch of [ __ ] well we think it's a bunch of [ __ ] Leo has his reasons obviously he doesn't like us maybe
18:19
Ronnie likes us more than obviously Ronnie likes us a lot more Bob isumi likes us more he came on this show was
18:25
on Roland Martin Roland Martin on this show bill Dan come on this they all do but but
18:31
not pretty he's the upper icelan for sure you know what I mean maybe he is the epitome of it all the the peak of
18:37
the mountain if he wants to be different he's he's different he's the only guy who hasn't been on the Outdoor Journal
18:42
Radio podcast now yes Leo ever but we got Ronnie you know what I mean and uh
18:49
we love Ronnie so we'll have a good podcast and Ronnie's got a business down there he'll toss he's guiding on the
18:55
miror machine you br so you folks down there are in for a treat yes sir did I mention uh fishing canada.com
19:03
the gateway to not as of yet well let me mention that in case you are uh looking
19:08
for uh um I don't know maybe vacationing vicariously through fishing canada.com
19:15
the gateway to your next fishing Adventure come on fishing uh vacation your next fishing vacation right while
19:22
you're there stop into the store uh uh give us uh some business we can always
19:27
use the funds trust me me especially Mr Bowman here who's planning apparently on a Mediterranean European uh cruise and
19:36
and the whole thing soon I'm just going along there's there's another person that's planning it I'm just going
19:42
[Laughter] along uh fishing canada.com where you
19:47
will be inundated with uh all of this uh wonderful swag behind us right there
19:53
that's the new one the latest one uh all of the fall and winter products are coming out now so another good reason to
20:00
visit uh there will be some sales if they're not already in effect uh getting
20:05
rid of all of the summer goods come on well you got to get rid what are you going to do you got you got toes you got
20:11
socks you got all this coming in exactly and more coming and I need room for my
20:17
cars well you better start blowing those stuff out son all right that's all going on sale it's happening at uh shop.
20:24
fishing canada.com or you can go through the front door like people like myself
20:29
respectable people do and that is fishing Canada uh.com come on now and then I push the
20:37
store by you sounded much more convincing with the shop. fishing canada.com than you did with your uh
20:44
back oh God you can also read some of the interesting stuff that uh listeners uh send to us periodically that we post
20:50
up there along with some stories along with uh news articles all kinds of good things yeah yeah and speaking of said uh
20:57
listener stories got listener feedback in response to our article does fish
21:02
taste better from cold water so we got a few uh responses here so for me I know I
21:08
noticed fish from cold water tends to be firmer so that's why I prefer cold water fish who's that from do we know a person
21:16
I think they wanted their name on there they didn't want their really it's a witness protection so so all these
21:22
people are in witness protection yeah wow all right if nothing else they are
21:28
less likely be full of worms gu I don't know you can't just automatically say that if a fish doesn't
21:34
come from cold water it's going to have it's going to be full of worms well that's a good one for stepen uh cook or
21:41
our fish talk with the doc segment would be a good one to that would be a really good one you know what we've never talked to him about that yeah like what
21:48
exactly are we dealing with when we say fish have got worms what what is it what worm and and and how does it get in
21:55
there and does a fish coexist witha does it not exactly there's all kinds there
22:00
you go make a note Dean make a note I want the next fish talk we need to talk about that please yeah Antonio might be
22:08
a good guy to have on to ask this too biologist he got worms he's got worms I know he's got
22:15
worms you love that okay go go back one more in response to our article does fish taste better from cold water one
22:22
more says yep Walleye out of a cold Northern Lake tastes way better than Walley that come from out of a slow warm
22:29
Southern rivers or reservoirs and reservoirs so that person that
22:34
unidentified person says yep all three of them say yep so he's saying it actually tastes better he's saying it
22:40
tastes way better not better way better I think part of that taste though is
22:47
the environment that you're in the the the the situation that you're in cuz
22:53
generally if you're in Northern parts of a province or a country fishing for
22:59
walleye you're in the remote Wilderness uh area you're probably doing
23:04
a Shore lunch I don't know I'm just throwing the stuff out and there's something about the environment of
23:10
course that being there with an open fire there's something special about that it would make any fish taste good
23:16
this unidentified person obviously has had Walleye out of co cold Northern Lakes as well as Southern rivers and
23:24
reservoirs slow warm Souther so he's this person he or she has tried them
23:29
this unidentified person because the law is after them is is uh has tried it all seriously I agree
23:36
with you an because because honest to God if if you were to take these Northern filets that we had that were
23:44
fresh or frozen let's say and then we had Southern filets that we didn't know where they came from I wonder if we could tell the difference you know what
23:51
I mean I think you could and I'll take it one step
23:56
further I'll take one step further I have had Shore lunch in remote Northern
24:03
Lakes yes and brought fish home from that same northern lake and eaten it you
24:12
know a week or even a couple of days after and it doesn't taste the same so
24:19
interesting I think the answer would be obvious I think I think there is something about that environment that
24:26
just makes food taste that's that's not what I'm saying though that's not what I'm I'm talking about just not knowing
24:31
where they came from and they're already caught oh you're you're preparing both of them in your kitchen they're at home they're at home now not and one's from
24:37
the north and one's from the south could you tell the difference I wonder you know what I mean let's say they were even if they were frozen for a week and
24:44
I think somebody who eats fish a lot or walleye fish walleye in particular a lot I think they would there is something
24:51
different there is there's no doubt about it you know I I'm I agree I love
24:56
Northern cold water Walley I just love so I don't know I don't know if I've tried I'll tell you I've tried I've
25:01
eaten a lot of be quinty Walley though in the summertime they're pretty damn good are they you know damn right they
25:07
are when you bring them home after you get some weed walleye in 6 feet of water and the water temperature is 72 de you
25:13
put them in that pan Jesus they're still delicious honestly but once again could
25:18
you tell the difference tell the difference I don't know honestly I couldn't I don't know I have to I have to do a direct comparison and then know
25:24
say hey you're full of [ __ ] Pete this is the one from the north that's the one from the South so all the more reason
25:30
why each and every one of you needs to go and immerse yourself in a Wilderness
25:36
experience and and try a Shor lunch especially walleye or Pike Dean like you
25:42
were talking earlier on because so it's it's it's magic what was your water
25:47
temperatures up there with those Pikes 68 68 so those Pike are probably tasting pretty good they were great yeah yeah
25:53
yeah but in order to have a pristine Wilderness you need to have concer a in
25:58
mind and it's time for this week's conservation Corner brought to you
26:04
by the invasive species
26:12
sentur The Humble goldfish everyone's favorite aquatic pet it's small easy to
26:18
care for what's there not to love even the cat may be mesmerized by the color and movements of your aquarium friends
26:24
goldfish are great at home but don't let them loose releasing goldfish other domestic aquatic pets or plants into
26:31
natural environments is harmful to both your pet and the planet Gish disrupt ecosystems by out competing native
26:37
species for food and resources in degraded habitats they contribute to algae blooms they kill aquatic wildlife
26:43
and pass viruses and diseases contracted in aquariums to Wildfish they could even live up to 40 years and grow as big as a
26:51
football Anglers this is where you come in if you find a goldfish at your local
26:56
fishing spot reported to the invading species hotline or go online to Ed
27:03
maps.com remember to never dump your life bait into the water and risk spreading other Aquatic Invaders keep
27:09
our legs free from Invaders and don't let them [Music]
27:17
loose how's that Dean did they do good it's great how' Pete do he was good he's
27:22
good not very great I was trying to engage him in you know meaningful conversation obviously that's not
27:28
working very well Dean's always to the point right he's just pretty much to the point so we'll move to um podcast
27:36
Network highlights yes folks Outdoor Journal Radio podcast is also a network
27:42
and on this network uh we have a plethora of other wonderful podcasters see the way I threw
27:49
that in there I said other wonderful podcasters insinuating that we're wonderful as well yeah come on I got you
27:56
every what's why you got to sneak those in there got they don't notice sneak them in if they've stuck with us so far this long they're thinking we're
28:02
wonderful because I don't know if I'd be sticking with us this long to be honest so one of those wonderful programs and
28:08
hosts uh is Diaries of a lodge owner or as he likes to be called oh
28:15
here we go oh doo doo give me a hell yeah look at him he's laughing at us he
28:22
doesn't like it does he he doesn't like the Doo um d o l o p Doo
28:29
episode 58 which is currently up uh he's done 58 episodes already holy that's
28:35
insane uh episode 58 of the Thrills trials and triumphs of the fishing
28:42
Canada show wow when did he become an expert on the vision Canada show well
28:48
it's because his he was 25% of that podcast he had 75% fishing caned
28:53
employees with them oh that's what happened that legal Boba that was that Lake obaba uh Lodge obaba Lake Lodge or
29:02
lake is it obaba lake or no it's lake obaba lake obaba lodge but the signage on the way in is confusing cuz it's it's
29:09
like three different ways on the road but it is called Lake OB babaka is what it's called andle what they call it so
29:16
and and now correct me if I'm wrong but it says this here so if it says it here
29:22
it's like on the internet if it says on the Internet it's got to be real uh am I reading this correct that vaa yes vva
29:28
our very own vova vlir babushkin no is
29:33
actually on that podcast I will say it took Stevie a lot of hugs and coing and
29:39
convincing to get VOA on there because it was going to be Steve and I and Dean and Dean doing the what he does here so
29:45
and then Stevie said no Boba I have to have you on Stevie I have boa come I have to have you Steve I don't want to
29:51
do God and and you and baa tapped out he said yeah okay wow unless I was was
29:58
going to I was going to listen to this episode anyways because I wasn't on that shoot I wasn't invited to when you
30:05
listen to this OB listen a couple months from now three years from now when was when were you planning on on this
30:12
one well it's got to be out it's got to be published I was waiting it waiting for it to on vacation for God's sake I
30:20
can't I can't do everything okay I got you but now that I know that vaa are Ukrainian
30:28
uh DP is interviewed by Steve of the fishing Canada show and uh
30:37
uh uh do do I was going to say how can I not listen to this episode this might become
30:43
the all-time biggest episode that we've ever had on the network it's episode 58 it's called Thrills trials and triumphs
30:50
of the fishing candidate show you my friends owe it to yourself come on now
30:55
and you it TOA cuz I'm sure he's getting royalties from on this one so oh I didn't think of that yeah he might be
31:01
getting a little Kickback on that one Speaking of obaba like we uh were just
31:07
now uh sale Sale s a i l sale just want
31:14
to make that clear sometimes I slur damn things you know I didn't get them cheap
31:21
either sale is your home in Canada for Yuri baits like the one lipless
31:28
crankbait the boys used it like OB babaa I can talk about this because cuz you used them you I part of that whole
31:34
system yeah absolutely Dean did more than anybody CU Dean actually did a show uh his first ever uh Alone by himself
31:41
hosting a fishing can solo it's called solo so he he was fishing so low was 50 ft of water 60 ft of water low that is
31:49
as low I believe every fish you caught was on a yui correct yeah on a Yi uh and
31:56
the exact bait that you see and we're not going to let it Loose yet we it's one knock Yuri lipless crankbait the
32:03
color we won't let go loose yet but sale there is a has oh is there okay so just loose there oh there it is right there
32:09
some [ __ ] hey look at the modifications I did that I I set that baby up cuz we had to go deep that is that exact bait
32:16
is sold in sale I know it cuz I saw it there the other day it was I bought them all you I'm just joking it's there um
32:23
yeah and what is that called what do that it's called the yui one knock one knock cuz it has one in it versus rattle
32:29
bait that multile be I want to point out because if not then we're going to get
32:34
somebody saying oh who who what do you mean you you you might be wondering why
32:39
Mr Bowman dressed this lure in this fashion the hint was and when he said
32:46
that Dean CAU them so low so low in 50
32:51
ft of water meaning that he had to go deep with this bait and although this is a fast sinking bait on its own pH what
32:58
the boys did they put extra weight this is lead yes that they wrapped around that that y one knock is 58 of an ounce
33:06
but that's not real heavy when you're fishing 60 ft of water so like an says it drops down quick but it has some
33:11
resistance so we just put some belly storm belly strips on it and we did that wrap around each hook and it made it
33:17
probably 3/4 of an ounce is maybe not quite that much but it definitely made it heavier and dropped down faster so
33:22
that's the whole idea to that by the way it it to my knowledge and please uh correct me if I'm wrong somebody can
33:29
write in and say I'm full of crap uh on this but I believe sale um has the largest selection of
33:37
Yuri baits in the country available on the Shelf from what I know really right
33:43
now as we speak I know they were talking at the Sportsman Show there was one other retailer that had a good Supply
33:48
but I don't know if it was more than a sale not the same not was collectively I mean all the stores together you can
33:53
walk in there and I'm telling you uh the they have a nice section now yeah nice the bits that we use on the television
34:00
program and the new episodes that are about what what are we talking a couple
34:07
of months away from premiering the 39th season of the chishan cidate
34:13
show um you can get them at sale so why do you have to show that so soon Dean
34:20
why why did you just not have like a regular one knock or put a big a big disguise on there we described so well
34:26
on the in the last podcast we did we did head on over to your local sales store
34:31
boys and girls uh today or better yet bookmark their uh website at
34:38
sale.ca for up to 60% off your next purchase on selected items mind you so
34:45
yeah that's sale.ca there you go very good all right
34:50
in the news we mentioned fishing canada.com and is a a great source of fishing and outdoor news well this is
34:56
certainly uh fitting of that comment this is uh I believe from the US is it
35:01
Dean from the US uh on Lake Erie so Mike Parker Community communications director
35:06
for the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission said the agency started receiving reports on Thursday about fish
35:12
washing onto the shore and these are deep waterer fish traditionally that are washing out Shore these aren't your
35:18
perch or bluegill or or whatever that would be normally in shallow water that's the amazing part about that story
35:24
isn't it right they were I believe it's sheep head right sheep which are yeah like an says they're kind of uh they're
35:31
not roaming the shoreline all the time at least uh so he says Thursday afternoon we noticed a few of them uh
35:37
wasn't a whole lot and then by the weekend as it progressed they saw more and more and more until it came up to be a couple hundred fish I saw this one
35:44
time actually an on the Bay of quinty one spring I saw sheep head I think they
35:49
were sheep head I'm pretty sure they were if it was a long time ago and they were all over the place they were just
35:55
here there and almost everywhere like but single fish it wasn't like groups of
36:00
dead ones right it was one dead one here you go down there's another one there there's another one there it was weird
36:05
we growing up as a kid I remember I remember this was not an unusual thing
36:10
to see uh especially around the Great Lakes where where and not I'm not talking sheep head I'm just talking fish
36:16
in general you'd have for unknown reasons you'd have you know
36:22
hundreds of them that just died and washed up on shore but the first thing that now we all want to talk about when
36:30
we see this is is obviously climate change and more specific water
36:35
temperature changes right and that's what they're they're attributing to this right that's what they're saying Anglers believe the water lake uh turned over
36:42
itself so this is Lake Erie and this just happened so we're talking August probably uh last week yeah and then it
36:49
caused the temperature pressures to change and killed the freshwater drum now now our angen de and I had a little
36:54
chat about this and we don't think the lakes are turning over yet no you know what I mean 70 Dean has 68 degre water
37:00
temperature way up North that Lake hasn't turned over yet you know what I mean not even close and then we're down here and and it's constantly in the
37:06
southern Ontario it's still in the 70s you know 70ish now at nights it goes down cold nights it goes down I saw 66 2
37:13
weeks ago but it still came back up so the legs aren't turning over yet so I don't think that you need you need 50
37:19
minus like sub 50° uh W water temperatures to even start thinking yeah
37:27
that ratification is going to so I've noticed in in the very limited uh time
37:32
of seeing dead fish uh that a lot of times it is species specific do you remember lake skoog with that carp thing
37:39
oh they were just they were just but was all carp it was not there wasn't a bass it wasn't a Walle it wasn't anything
37:44
else it and lake skoog is a very shallow water lake right so I think it's more uh
37:50
species disease or something like that there's something going on that they're poisoned they're some kind of a kill
37:56
that that's different than not just water temp because cuz carp can live in the warmest water and they can live in the coldest water right do you recall
38:03
did anybody ever do a study on that I think they they had some kind of a carp virus I think it was some kind of a
38:09
virus that came through and and wiped them out badly you know what I mean a heavy duty job thousands of yeah stink
38:16
remember the stink everybody's complaining about people raking them up and shoveling them up and it would have
38:27
yes yeah so anyways they're you know they're trying to top talk about the the turnover but I don't know I mean we're
38:33
not biologists but yeah go ahead we're not well we're fishology you are that's
38:38
what Calvin calls you a fishology yeah I think he calls me a meathead I think that was his description of me but um
38:46
I'm curious why you keep pointing at Dean over there when I see him over here
38:52
I talked to him and see him here but you but you live in a fictious world right that's not Dean that's Dean right so I'm
38:59
I'm talking the real Dean see look wave to me Dean wave there how can he be waving to you cuz he's not looking at
39:05
you's W there you see at me right you see right there he just just I know I
39:11
know our producers the directors I know everybody in this says guys Dean is
39:17
right there and yet and yet I'm sitting here I know he's there but I see you
39:23
pointing over there I'm confused wait I'm confused Dean I'm sorry
39:31
okay it is hard Let Me Tell You Folks it is hard to soar like an eagle when you
39:39
have balls like a beagle eyes like an eagle and balls like
39:44
a fan question of the week finally we got to get Ron we got to get Ron on here
39:49
man who who is this fan question brought to you by andw uh brought to you by fishfindermounts.com
39:55
that's who it's brought got a text from them just now can you share with us he's going to
40:02
he's sending us what we need remember we were talking about what we needed to specific Parts built and made quickly for us I got to tell you something this
40:10
is one of those companies that flies under the radar far too long it flew
40:15
under our radar for God knows how long and once we found them once we
40:22
discovered the virtues and benefits of their product you could not tear it out
40:28
of our hands for all the money in the world right now I don't even know how we would be fishing without their products
40:34
I had a conversation with somebody the other day and they and uh I think they were here cuz I showed them the
40:40
mountains in the boat and they said but aren't they really expensive I says well okay they're expensive but when you go
40:46
through like Dean said many times ago sorry Dean said many times ago that Dean there not that Dean over there that that
40:54
uh you'll go through three or four other mounts and then you'll finally go to one that really works so you're spending all this money just spend the money like
41:01
it's like it's like uh Liv scope if if you can spend the money you should spend
41:06
the money because this the best of the best right you know what I mean so these these mounts are fantastic and when the more we're using them the more we're
41:12
loving them and just don't worry about the the you worry about the price but when you can save up enough to buy it
41:18
buy it and if you're spending the money on the live scope like you need something to hold it right yeah makes it
41:24
wor that's the part that I have a hard time exactly cheap out on the mount when you buy when you put 2,000 bucks into an
41:31
extra on your fish finding system no you need to buy good stuff and I know in our
41:37
case uh doing a nationally televised fishing show we would be
41:46
improvising especially on Outback Lakes where we'd fly in with limited access to
41:51
anything and we'd have to kind of jury rig stuff and and you know to put transducers on little tin boats and and
41:59
I it was it got to a point where it Not only was it ineffective but for us it
42:04
was embarrassing that we'd be you know aluminum poles and clamps and tape and
42:12
and bolts and nuts trying to get transducers to work properly in uh in
42:18
those conditions now those problems are all gone and all it took was a visit to fishfindermounts.com
42:25
on go there and see if we're lying that's all I'm saying just go there and see if all of your uh mounting issues
42:33
will magically how was sorry Dean how Dean this Dean here Dean number two what
42:39
what uh how did that work out for you Dean took the portable kit up north oh was amazing great I was cruising around
42:46
at like 2 mil an hour with the pole down like crazy thing else it would have
42:52
snapped in half yeah it's crazy yeah crazy beautiful we're we're using their
42:57
big heavy duty equipment on uh on the boat I mean I don't even know how we would be using uh to to be honest with
43:04
you uh the XR the big 62 I don't even know how we be a tough run on the on the
43:10
yeah on the gen three pole God yeah you need the heavy duty for that one anyways
43:16
uh so this segment which is the fan question of the week is now brought to you by fishfindermounts.com
43:22
come on now and what is said question Mr Bowman said question would read from
43:27
Travis Fleming from Ontario via email in an MLF Major League Fishing style
43:34
tournament would you target large mouth or small mouth so Travis is quite vague
43:40
here first of all let's let's explain um um
43:45
MLF is a tournament style that's totally different than most other tournaments
43:52
and that they basically have no Big Show at the end with one big way in with all
43:57
the fish and all that stuff they they kind of do it on camera uh instantly for
44:02
the most part although I believe now they do have something there is something else but the biggest
44:07
difference is the MLF style is that all fish count versus five fish count right
44:13
the like the BSS Elites for instance they have the best five fish of the day you keep calling and dropping and and at
44:19
the end of the day you weigh them in and all that is you catch them as long as it's a certain size cuz they have criteria sometimes there's a 2B
44:25
sometimes there's whatever it is and as long as it meets that criteria you weigh them and you add it to the your total
44:31
and just keep going and going and going and you release it immediately which is you know there's a lot of uh controversy
44:38
there too you know in that style of fishing although conceptually I think it's uh
44:45
it's much better for the management of the resource MH I
44:50
think uh there's a lot of Merit for it it doesn't do much I think for the big
44:56
hoopla the big show the big whatever right but it's a television event right it makes it a televised event it's not a
45:02
live event all yeah versus a live event but he's saying what would you target large M or small Mo I mean how the hell
45:08
I mean well let's let's just let's be hypothetical here let's take a lake let's make a a fake Lake that we an and
45:14
I are building right now and we put in 500 large mouth and 500 small mouth and
45:20
it's got every little bit of structure and cover in it and it's an Ontario so cuz he's from Ontario so equal
45:27
number of the inventory is completely balanced absolutely I'm going to assume
45:33
sizewise completely balanced everything is the same so because we're looking for
45:39
not necessarily quality we're looking for quantity in this style of fishing that's correct yep would you go for
45:47
large more small well well okay that now narrows it down I'm going to go for small mouth as I as well for sure that's
45:53
a no-brainer however however I will say there are some lakes
46:00
that maybe would defy that where where but then I think the inventory levels of
46:05
of the stock is unbalanced because I was going to say there are lakes where definitely
46:11
the answer is large mod yeah yeah definitely yeah I mean to for Travis it's it depends on the lake obviously
46:17
but all things equal we both just said Smallmouth and I think it' be the they're they're more aggressive large Mo
46:24
can be [ __ ] I'm going to tell you that right now they can be be real dicks they just when they don't want to bite they don't want to bite Smallmouth you
46:30
can seem to we seem to be able to convince into biting more they're more aggressive they're little bullies that are that are always on the move on the
46:37
in the lake and they're always you know usually they're willing to bite not always they're usually willing to bite more so to me than large M and I love
46:44
fishing large M more than small M but I would pick small let me throw one little caveat in the mix
46:50
here under [Music] extreme cold front conditions
46:58
which by the way I don't know about you guys but you know most of the time I'm fishing it's extreme conditions yeah
47:06
yeah so let me throw that in there so the balance is is there in terms of inventory so this lake is known to have
47:14
as many small mouth as large mouth the size is is fairly uh neutral they're all
47:19
the same but now you've got this badass nasty cold front that has moved in on
47:26
your tournament day MH where do you go now Mr Bowman now we we both agreed that Smallmouth would have been my initial
47:33
our initial thought here where do you go now I'm running the scenarios in my head
47:38
I I think I still got to go Smallmouth I think I've caught enough through cold fronts I've caught enough both species
47:43
that cold fronts but I think just the way Smallmouth are um their their
47:48
Tendencies to be spread out more roaming more etc etc and a lot of them don't a
47:55
lot of the the bigger ones aren't really they don't care about that cold front so I I'm going to say Smallmouth
48:01
by a little margin small Marin I'm going to go large mouth Yeah by a little margin I would go Largemouth um for sure
48:08
in that scenario under ideal conditions it would be Smallmouth for sure but I
48:14
don't think that any serious professional angler that is successful
48:21
would ever lock themselves into a scenario like this to be honest with you I think you you have to Zig and zag you
48:28
have to go with with what nature hands you and um I think if you talked you
48:33
know nine out of 10 top Pros that fish the uh uh MLF will probably tell you
48:39
that that they don't make those decisions in advance those are decisions
48:45
that are made on the water based on on the conditions that they're under and uh if they need to go in the muck and play
48:52
around with some large mouth to to bring their average up a little bit I think they'll do it for
49:10
sure we interrupt this program to bring you the much anticipated bonus code for the latest fishing Canada giveaways this

50:00
friend thank you my friend uh without further Ado our special guest today is now upon us Ron James formerly formerly
50:08
of fish TV I have to I'll tell you why well we don't know that yet do we or do I do I know officially how are you buddy
50:17
I'm good man how are you guys good Ronnie first of all let me tell you we missed you at the Sportsman show the
50:24
Toronto Sportsman show this year yeah I you know I missed I missed that show I mean that show is unbelievable and
50:31
there's lots of fans that go there and I get to see you guys all the time and I really missed it I missed it yeah it was
50:37
it was fun for sure but we missed you too buddy don't worry so apprciate it to say that we were
50:43
shocked would be a bit of an understatement uh the whole thing went down it was like it was like uh shrouded
50:51
in mystery what whole thing talk to me about talk to the audience about Ron James no longer uh being with fish TV
50:59
well it took us Mega time to figure that out like you you're obviously even further on it than I am because we we
51:05
hounded Leo as many times hey what's going on with the r oh you know oh you know oh yeah oh yeah you know we got
51:11
nothing out of him man we we tried to crack his code we got nothing out of him so Cur on anyways it was a bit of a
51:17
shock I'll be honest with you like you you were you and Leo uh on that show well it's much like Pete I on our show
51:24
right exactly um you're kind of part you're a fixture within the big picture
51:29
and he's my brother buddy I mean you know it's just um it you know did I want
51:36
to leave no but yes the only reason I did leave buddy is
51:43
because you know 60 years old the traveling well you guys know more than
51:48
young kid what are you talking about you're a young kid you're still wet behind the ears for God's sake 60 funny
51:55
you know I careers so much I used to work in the Auto industry for 25 years and a lot of people didn't know that and
52:01
then when I met Leo and I had a show long before uh on Rogers Cable 10 called
52:07
fishing for fun back way back in the 90s so when it was fun it
52:14
was I had to travel from uh you know Durham region to Durham
52:20
region no we we uh I I I love Le to death I love fish TV and um it was just
52:27
uh uh you know a career move that uh for me uh I'm I'm a farm guy I people don't
52:35
know that either I I worked on a dairy farm in between on the road for 10 15 years I mean uh I moved out here I
52:42
bought a homestead I got a 13 Acre Farm with some cows and some chickens and wow
52:48
no way that's awes yeah so I uh that's something it's always been in my in my
52:53
in my family my my grandfather was a farmer and I love it I it's just love it where tell tell folks exactly where you
53:00
are I am actually 20 minutes from the best River fishing in the world the
53:06
there's a reason why I picked this area because of that the Mirch I'm in the Mirchi area yeah what town are you in
53:13
Ron what if you don't mind town called Laval all French and I don't speak a
53:19
word of French and I'll tell you something about the maritime people they open their doors to anybody I mean a few
53:26
language few words not good ones B you because my neighbors are you know oh yeah they're great but oh yeah um it's
53:34
in a French area uh the people have just opened their arms and uh you know we look for a while uh we came out here may
53:43
uh Leo and I fished the Marchi uh like you guys did a few shows there for the
53:48
tourism for new BR yeah and I fell in love with it and uh I said to my wife
53:54
there's something about the maritimes that you know like like you guys you've
53:59
Tred all over the world right so I don't know you grab me and uh we drove back
54:04
out here in August and we started looking for uh for houses and some acreage and and then I I went to Leo and
54:11
I said I don't know how to break this to you but you know it's I I I'm done with the the traveling and uh I mind you fish
54:19
TV is my life trust me you know what I mean I love Leo like a brother I only
54:25
wish him best uh him and green tree is going to be one of the best co-host going he's green is awesome yeah and
54:32
Jeff's still there so yeah um yeah we still communicate quite a bit and uh they were just out here they were just
54:38
out here in fredon and uh shot a couple shows and uh we we touch Bas all the time and uh I miss them I miss them oh
54:45
for sure and there's there's not going to be a day that goes by I'll guarantee you that the very things that you have
54:53
tired of in this industry cuz we go through it all the time but yeah the very things that you say oh God I wish I
55:00
didn't have to do that again there will not be a day that goes by that you won't miss that just for a split second every
55:09
day you'll say oh man I wonder what oh you know what I mean and that's that's
55:15
uh but anyways I I want to know when Ronnie James is gonna become fully
55:21
bilingual that's what I want to know I can see you I could love to hear you speak French brother that would be the
55:28
best I know B sure and then that's about it you know but yeah I I don't think
55:34
that's gonna happen being being my age but right yeah I'll never say never you know good to learn it's good to learn my
55:41
animals are listening to I got a fox that's running around here taking a few of my chickens so I turn on a radio and
55:47
it's on a French station all the time so I'm listening to that constantly anyway so okay obviously you're you're
55:56
going to be uh some of your time is being taken up by your livestock and and
56:01
all the stuff that you would do on on a farm St what are you doing though the other
56:07
times because you can't tell me that you have completely removed yourself from fishing or the outdoors and all that
56:13
stuff oh no no no okay I knew it I knew there was more to this than met the ey
56:18
yeah I bought a a a I guess you call a little cap so right on the Marchi up in
56:24
well you guys probably know Sunny corners yeah I think so yeah yeah that's the north the just before it turns into
56:31
fly fishing only right right right Bridge there yeah okay so I bought a place on the river there and um uh kind
56:38
of running uh a little guide business out of there I got some private property for the Atlantic salmon up there that I
56:45
got a guide that's working for me and uh I do a little bit of guiding down here and uh kind of Airbnb and guiding if
56:54
guys come out they got to stay there so are you yeah no I I still do a lot of stuff with Raa and Boss Pro Shops out
57:01
here uh that store out here is taking me under their wing and uh the M store is
57:06
amazing these people are phenomenal but uh yeah I yeah there's no way I can get
57:11
out of the out of the business I love so I got a quick question are you going to be just guiding stripers or are you
57:18
going to do small Mo anything else the I'm G to stick with the stripers um yeah
57:24
there's something about those fish yeah yeah yeah yeah I'm just going to
57:30
stay with them for now and uh that takes up enough of my time you know what I mean so okay yeah we got uh I got some
57:38
private pools up north there that um for The Atlantics if they ever come back but
57:45
uh right right I don't know if you guys want to talk about that but talk about anything we talked about it a lot do you
57:52
have to buy did you have to own those pools you have to buy the property around it sort of thing like the both sides of the river yeah so you own the
57:58
property um you know it's all private um and then uh you could either lease it or
58:04
buy it you know what I mean and then it's it's private so a guy that I'm working with um out here Curry he's got
58:12
uh I actually don't own the property the the some Americans do but he takes care of it and we've worked out a deal where
58:19
my customers can go on that property with curry okay so I have a question
58:24
related to your new career uh in the areas where it is fly fishing only mhm
58:33
has anybody thought about starting a fly fishing striper bass
58:40
operation yeah me okay because I no I'll tell you why I'll tell you why I'm
58:45
saying this there was a a a funny you know you're talking about the pools and
58:51
up past where we shot a show where where you can fly fish only Beyond where we
58:56
were um there was an opportunity came up that I unfortunately or fortunately had
59:03
to turn down but there was an operation quite a ways up river that uh came on
59:09
the market that was traditionally an Atlantic salmon um Lodge we'll call it
59:15
yeah um that was up for sale and and obviously one of the reasons is because
59:21
the salmon fishery is not what it used to be when that place was originally built and then therefore the owners
59:26
looking to jettison out of there but I thought about you know I wonder if there
59:32
is a business here fly fishing fly fishing for stripers you know what the
59:40
amount of stripers that pool up there all winter long is incredible I mean so
59:46
they're I mean The Season's a little short here they they shut it down at the end of October right right right but um
59:52
it opens up pretty early April um 15th but they stay there all winter and
59:59
there's fish in there well the fish are coming in right now uh they're catching them down by uh chatam there where the
1:00:06
rod is you know the motel there you guys did you stay there y of course oh yeah yeah yeah so they're catching a few
1:00:13
there um and they're starting to come in and they're putting the Feed Bag on so but they'll come in and they'll stay
1:00:18
there they they'll go as far up as do town which is where the salmon you know used to be supposed to be and there's
1:00:26
loads of them I mean loads of really they stay there all winter they stay in the pools stay the winter all all all
1:00:31
winter and then you know guys soon as ice out in April well this year it was early I mean they they tell me that the
1:00:39
winners AR aren't hard here like this winter I don't know it snowed for three days and I had 50 centimeters of snow
1:00:45
and there saying that's nothing so I don't know I I just spent three days cutting
1:00:50
four Bush cords of wood putting it away so yeah no kidding you know what I mean so oh God they say it's not a harsh
1:00:57
winter it's funny because it can't be because in my property right behind me I
1:01:03
got moose everywhere I got three moose yesterday that just came to the door here and uh the wildlife is incredible
1:01:10
wow so and when normally they said when it's a light winter like it was last
1:01:15
year those these moose will stay around if not they go like 10 miles behind and they go into a valley and stuff but um I
1:01:22
guess it wasn't a harsh winter but speaking of this the back to the stripers yeah they're they're up there
1:01:28
all year round and and D there is a market for I I know there is is there
1:01:34
yeah for sure because you can't go wrong and you know what's
1:01:39
funny when when uh when they say fly fishing okay you know that you could only you
1:01:47
don't need a fly rod okay you could use a spinning rod with a fly on it you
1:01:53
realize that no yeah I was told that now I've never heard that before me neither
1:01:59
you don't quote me on this but a lot of the guyses that I've been talking to as long as you're using a fly but what's a
1:02:07
fly what's a fly what's a fly like I don't
1:02:13
know now maybe I'm single hook single hook guys are up there trolling with fly rods right okay right and they're
1:02:20
they're trolling guy like me I'm not a fly fisherman I can't cast a fly rod my
1:02:26
depended on yeah but you can go up there and troll with a fly rod right now and I don't know if this is just don't quote
1:02:33
me on that about the spinning rod but I know that obviously um you know native
1:02:38
people can do that with spinning rods right don't quote me on that but I think what I've heard from a couple of guys
1:02:44
and now I haven't looked into this you 100% through the DFO but yeah I heard
1:02:50
that as long as you got a fly and that's what my question is what's a fly well I mean you make a good point though
1:02:56
because if we know for a fact that you can use fly gear while trolling right so
1:03:04
so when they say fly fishing only right they can't they can't say that it must
1:03:12
be done with a single action reel you know that's on a a fly fishing pole they
1:03:21
say fly fishing only meaning you're right meaning as long as there's a fly at the end of that line and a fly to me
1:03:28
would be something with for sure single hook fur feathers fur fethers maybe
1:03:34
feathers I know at West the the definition they use at West is the weight of the line has to carry the fly
1:03:40
has to carry the fly I was just about to ask if I was just about to ask if you could throw a float because a float
1:03:46
would throw you know if you had a float on with a fly underneath it you get it a way out there no problem but obviously
1:03:51
the float the float's carrying the yeah if that's the case you know you need to look into that because 100% I've talked
1:03:58
to a few people I've contacted the DFO and now I'm just going by what I've
1:04:04
heard out here this nothing from legit and by the way by the way because
1:04:10
of the aggressiveness of those big stripers in that River you can use some
1:04:15
pretty big Gody looking flies man I mean so so some heavy flies which would which
1:04:22
would pull your line you know to Dean's point off your re can you run a boat in those pools yes you can you can so you
1:04:29
could you got to be careful you got to be careful for sure because um soon as you get up to the sunny Corners Bridge
1:04:36
there's all kinds of pylons and stuff like that but yeah they they've put boats up above and so they you literally
1:04:42
could troll a fly there with you know they do it all the time I've seen I've seen it happen but the guys that I've
1:04:49
seen do it I've got fly rods you know what I mean but they're trolling they're trolling probably with
1:04:56
whatever yeah that's something worth looking into for sure because now now does that open the season up longer does
1:05:03
it open does what's the what's the from a it does right yeah yeah so after after
1:05:09
the um uh when it opens April 15 then they close a 9 kilometer section of the
1:05:16
river for spawning right so they'll be closed but you can fly fish above that
1:05:23
at that time oh wow above sunny Corners so that so the below the 9 km so Sunny
1:05:30
Corners Bridge below 9k right you could fish there's a marker there and then you can fish below that yeah but that that
1:05:38
9k that starts and goes to Sunny Corners Bridge you can't fish they shut it down for like a week and a half two weeks
1:05:44
right so the fish can spawn and then but above that you can fly fish over okay so
1:05:50
the fish that are above that are they are they not spawning
1:05:55
they are I've seen them spawning you fish for it's just the quirkiness in the law that says you can there but you
1:06:02
can't there they probably just taking a nice section of the the prime spawning section of the river and saying okay at least give them a chance to spawn
1:06:08
probably right yeah that's not is that red Bank in that area is that what no no it's up the exactly farther farther up
1:06:15
though Beyond farther up the spawning area right there yeah yeah um are you
1:06:23
all caught up in in the big uh Hoopa about uh DFO making a a change in
1:06:30
regulations in terms of retention yeah yeah you know talk to us about that
1:06:35
Ronnie yeah I I you know I've got mixed mixed emotions about that whole thing I mean okay so I've only been here since
1:06:44
December and I've really started to do a little bit more research and and what I found is like um you know the indigenous
1:06:52
people can take well used to be able to take 50,000 yeah either you know fish and then and
1:06:59
then you know they've never ever taken their quota no okay because there's no real there's no real market for it at
1:07:06
this point right have you guys ever ate stripers oh my God it's it's Hallelujah brother it's awesome unbelievable isn't
1:07:13
it it's really good now that they've somebody's paid these politicians off
1:07:20
whatever you uh they've upped a quota 100
1:07:26
75,000 yeah that's yeah three yeah yeah so so now that opens doors for the
1:07:33
commercial market right let's face it I mean if if people know that how good
1:07:38
this this fish is for table Fair that's just going to open another Avenue and so
1:07:45
in again don't quote me on the years but I think it was 200 uh 19 or 18 there it was like 950,000
1:07:53
fish that ran up this River and spaed in and around I'm not sure of the year
1:07:58
don't quote me on the year but as of last year they're they're like 450,000
1:08:04
right exactly so so what's going on there's obviously something going on and
1:08:09
now you've got these the salmon Association that have got a ton of money
1:08:16
and I love salmon don't get me wrong Atlantic salmon are absolutely amazing fish I love fishing for them it's the
1:08:21
people you don't like the fish you like it's the people you don't like I didn't say that um I you know they've
1:08:30
got a lot of money yeah and and these are guys that you know come here and
1:08:35
they fly in their helicopters and they want to go fishing for a week and they fly home and they they want salmon yeah
1:08:41
well they're blaming another species that's been together since the 1800s that are cleaning these these these
1:08:48
these Atlantics out and I don't believe that's the case I believe you know
1:08:54
cancel the SE seal hunt oh my God I don't know if you guys ever been down to the pei and and and watch
1:08:59
the shoreline it's crazy absolutely ridiculous how many seals are there yeah so not only that the clear cutting here
1:09:08
so just CL just clarify that a little bit there might be folks saying what what's Ron doing he's his M what's
1:09:14
what's seal got to do with with Atlantic salmon so obviously explain what you
1:09:19
mean by that the seals are eating a ton of fish I mean they eat Atlantics they eat whatever whatever stripers stripers
1:09:28
doesn't matter yeah they'll eat anything lobster they anything and that was another thing that I got a couple
1:09:34
Lobster buddies that live here and uh you know they're now the bfo or the
1:09:41
government says that the lobster guys can take all the stripers that they catch and use them for bait and that was
1:09:47
the other thing yeah yeah so I mean but anyway let's get back to it the seals
1:09:52
are obviously crushing a lot of these fish whether it be Atlantics or whether
1:09:58
it be stripers you know anything that swims they'll eat it um and since they
1:10:03
cancel that I mean the pups that are getting born through seals is
1:10:08
incredible um you know there's there's the the chop what they call clear cuts of chopping which is taking the woods
1:10:15
out you know you need 2x4s well this province is 80% Woods 85% Woods I mean
1:10:24
you know we they do a lot of Agriculture here and take a lot of woods out well that right there alone stops the runoff
1:10:31
or opens the runoff from rains and stuff like that and there's no stoppage so
1:10:37
I've ever since I've looked into this the water temperature has been going up like three degrees two and a half three
1:10:43
degrees every year yeah just a summer alone the water temperature in in July
1:10:50
75 degrees up near my other place up near Sunny corn up their dop count 75
1:10:57
degrees wow I mean you know it's unheard of yeah yeah which is not good for salmon obviously that's they can't live
1:11:04
in it yeah they can't live in it they can't spine they can't live they can't eat they can't do anything in it yeah that's right yeah and they I mean there
1:11:11
are salmon there I've seen them but they're not you know and they have shut down weeks like when it it's been a real
1:11:18
hot summer here it's been like an Ontario Summer it's been 30 degrees all the time hardly any rain and uh you know
1:11:25
when they when they the DFO will shut it down they'll shut the whole river down even for stripers for everything they'll
1:11:31
just no fishing whatsoever in in in the mar machine because of the water temperature you know yeah and and and
1:11:39
you know if you're listening to this and and you're kind of sitting on the fence saying why are you guys poo po pooing
1:11:44
the the poor Atlantic salmon like like what's what's going on with that and we and I want to make it perfectly clear
1:11:50
we're not and I'm sure you're not I'll speak on your behalf as well Ron um it's just that uh the people who won't let go
1:11:59
and I'm not suggesting that they do Let Go by the way but the people who won't let go of it are not thinking clearly
1:12:07
they're thinking emotionally if they were thinking clearly all the things that Ron just said is what would be on
1:12:13
their on their target uh clear cutting for example that would be Enemy Number
1:12:19
One for the Atlantic salmon Federation I would think now maybe they are wrapped up in Wars with that industry we don't
1:12:27
know if they're not but we don't seem to hear a whole lot about that the fact that that back in the uh 6 early 60s I
1:12:34
think it was I mean New Brunswick pretty well poisoned the entire Amir Machi with pesticide DDT DDT yes you know look at
1:12:43
look into that as a possible start of the decline there's so many the seals
1:12:49
that you just mentioned there are so many other um areas of concern that they
1:12:55
should be spending money on as far as I'm concerned me too and and and leave
1:13:03
the bass and in particular strip bass but although I'll just say bass in general leave them alone because
1:13:10
honestly one day they're going to be your salvation that's that's going to be
1:13:15
your income that's the fishery I totally agree with you 100% I totally agree with
1:13:21
you is Ron is there any control on the seal population or is it just a free-for-all they're breeding and living
1:13:27
and going nuts is there anything I have not heard a thing on any control of it now wow nothing completely shut down the
1:13:35
hunt was shut down years ago yeah I wonder did do a native Community do they take seals for whatever reason yes okay
1:13:42
oh yeah but they wouldn't even put a dent in no not even a that's the only
1:13:48
basic control Predators they there's no orcas out there is there on your side in in the at least that area would there be
1:13:55
any orcas out there I think so I don't think so no there's not much maybe the odd shark yeah there's great whites and
1:14:01
stuff like that quite a few again there's less of a dent in the population than the natives would be even so yeah
1:14:07
that's that's they're running ramping out there they're they're like cors around here you know what I mean it's ridiculous you nailed it py that's
1:14:15
exactly what they are they they're every so we're first of all we're going
1:14:20
to come down uh in a few weeks and visit with you I hope you know that I heard that so you guys are coming down to the
1:14:26
Canada black B right well we're we're down there for uh for three weeks uh
1:14:32
shooting episodes from from New Brunswick to Nova Scotia and in between
1:14:38
I believe it's in between or at the end we're going to be covering the big PanAm Championship I'm there I'm uh I'm doing
1:14:46
media there nice no way perfect yeah yeah they got a hold of me and uh asked me if I would cover uh the media like I
1:14:54
don't know whether got me in a truck or on the boat or you know doing live stream with the Anglers on the water I
1:15:01
we're just sewing up the details but yeah I'm I'm there I'm beautiful I'll excited to see you guys we'll see you
1:15:08
for sure uh at that point but I was going to ask you and well I would ask you in person when I come down but is
1:15:14
there ever any notion because I know how this business gets under your
1:15:20
skin um are we possibly going to be uh
1:15:26
anticipating Ron James uh Outdoors Television at some point
1:15:32
no that was out of it that was it come on that it work with me give me a little
1:15:38
something no no it's too [Music] definitive um you know I I'm gonna be
1:15:44
doing stuff with the tourism New Brunswick tourism with Neil and uh and Mar Mai tourism and whatever like if
1:15:50
they've got guys like you that want to come out and do a show and they need something to host them or whatever yeah
1:15:56
I'll be doing stuff like that uh doing seminars for people that you know that they bring in that don't really know how
1:16:02
to fish and do stuff like that but for production wise no no no sir no no it
1:16:12
got under his skin too far I think obviously no no you know what I no
1:16:17
that's not true I loved it I I I still love it I still love it but you know there's a time and a place it's a huge
1:16:23
Endeavor to take it on again right right for sure it really is really is yeah yeah and it it it's like you guys you
1:16:31
know once you start you keep going and going and going because you just want to get bigger and better and you know I
1:16:37
just don't want to start just don't want to start just do my own thing you know no such thing as
1:16:44
just getting your toes wet you got to jump in head and Toes right all right so now that we've gotten over the
1:16:49
pleasantries now we can talk some crap um you know cuz nobody Le doesn't listen
1:16:55
to this podcast let's talk trash on Leo this hey you know what this is this is a
1:17:01
good point though we've asked Leo quite a few times you know different times and Ron probably knows about this come on on
1:17:07
no I don't do podcast no I don't do podcast yeah like what's up with that no all you know what he's not that yeah
1:17:13
he's not the type of guy to do stuff like that I guess I don't know weird that's I don't know I don't understand
1:17:20
it either but he's always been like that I mean and that you know teaching his own he does his own
1:17:25
yeah he likes you know he likes just going fishing and you know he do his own
1:17:31
thing so he must uh have been how many years did you work with Leo 23 23 years
1:17:39
[ __ ] there's got to be there's got to be some great stories that you could like share with us about about coexisting and
1:17:47
traveling with Leo cuz we the little time that we get to spend with him we we we've had some really special moments
1:17:53
with him over the last few years and we always say man I wish we could spend more time with this guy cuz it would be
1:18:00
insane yeah he's going a million miles an hour constantly and it never stops no
1:18:08
it doesn't stop right I think I think that's why we got along so good because you know I'm the type of guy that just
1:18:14
is calm and cool and yeah you go through and like he's OJ Simpson go through an
1:18:19
airport come on come on he's got to be in the front row he's got to be the first guy in line he's got to be got got
1:18:25
him come on come on he's I I go Bud the plane's not leaving without me and my
1:18:31
bags are on there I'm not running we beat him one time in Florida
1:18:36
oh God that was fun he always talks about like Ronnie says Leo likes to sit at the very front of the plane and all that stuff and somehow or other Ang and
1:18:43
I long story short we got the front of the plane we were talking to Leo never told him in the airport this is that I
1:18:49
cast or some whatever it was the Mercury thing but so all of a sudden we get in
1:18:55
our seat and we made sure we got in first so we got in our seats first and then we just looked up at Leo and he looked at us in those seats and he say
1:19:00
you sons of [ __ ] it's like we punched it right in the face oh yeah it was hilarious it's
1:19:07
like that on the boat I mean trust me he's got to be you know right at the
1:19:12
very front of the boat almost you know right at the the fish finders I mean the Troll Motor and he doesn't like running
1:19:18
the Troll Motor but he's got to be at the front I remember a story we were in uh in Brazil and you know what it's like
1:19:25
fishing for those throw those big amazon rippers like this right and I heard it whiz by
1:19:33
my ear a couple times you know and I'm like hey dude like just just back up or watch what you're doing and and and
1:19:40
that's the thing with Leo when he gets dialed in he doesn't think what's going on around he just he's fish Brown you
1:19:46
know yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah so a couple times and you know you get the raindrops on your ear in the back of
1:19:52
your neck water like oh my God man you're G to get me you're going to get me well he did get
1:19:59
me he got me right in the back of the head two five o forged hooks
1:20:06
bury knocked me to the carpet we're in the middle of the Jungle knocked me to the carpet knocked I was kind of Dazed I
1:20:12
didn't know what was going on blood everywhere it looked like a a
1:20:18
homicide and I'm like what happened he go and Leo's got a heart of gold
1:20:25
Leo he he starts crying and you know he's he's really you know worried and I
1:20:30
said it's okay but you know don't worry about it we we'll figure it out we're in the middle of jungle well the guide knew
1:20:37
the the braid trick right you know what I mean oh boy and he pulled it out thank
1:20:43
God because Le couldn't do it he pass out you know but he got him out and we
1:20:49
we wrapped my whole head in a Band-Aid and ended up fishing the rest of the day but there's stories like that that's not
1:20:55
the first time I've been hooked with him I mean there been several times I've been hooked with him oh my God that is
1:21:01
awesome you know it's funny you say that about him because I think he's one of the most misunderstood guys in the
1:21:07
business I don't want to make this the Leo show by any means but we don't get a chance to to talk about him on the
1:21:13
podcast because he won't come on for whatever reason uh you're the next best thing if not even better so we'll take
1:21:20
this opportunity um but I think he's one of the most Miss see you're you're you're transparent you're obvious you're
1:21:26
just a big great guy you're just a fun guy people would just love to spend time
1:21:33
with you because you're your openness you're Frank um all those wonderful
1:21:38
traits that that you just ooze but are very transparent they're on the surface
1:21:44
Leo on the other hand is the opposite on the surface and most people
1:21:50
misunderstand him as being you know that tough miserable rotten no
1:21:55
and he's not he's one of the most he's one of the fun I've ever met genuinely
1:22:00
honestly caring wonderful individuals that you'd ever want to spend time with his stories his stories and ronnie'll
1:22:07
know this but an and I his stories about his dad are epic they are legendary when he starts imitating his dad and saying
1:22:14
all the [ __ ] that went on in his life you will laugh whoever hears this will laugh their asses off at his
1:22:21
story yeah he yeah people don't know go know the underneath a Leo and he's got a
1:22:27
a heart massive the size of a moon and uh and he just a wonderful wonderful man
1:22:32
and and and great at what he does don't get me wrong he's really good at business and he's really good on that
1:22:38
show and that show has been around for a long time just as yours yeah uh for a reason and and you know it's uh it's the
1:22:46
business quality and the Heart of Gold and and and the people that he hangs around like you guys and everything just
1:22:52
makes everything you know just just awesome so I I you know I miss him every
1:22:58
day um you know I still chat with him once in a while but he's busy this is your busy time of year and I get it he's
1:23:05
on the road quite a bit but um yeah I uh I still obviously keep in touch but he's
1:23:11
he's one of my best friends so it's funny that Ronnie said that he just did they just stayed at frederickton right
1:23:16
they just did you said they just shot in fredon so it's funny how this whole world works in the fishing World I'll tell the audience we were at Nordic
1:23:23
Point Lodge earlier this year we were leaving and Leo and Jeff were coming in
1:23:28
the lodge at the same time now those guys just left Frederick and we're going to be going in there in a week it's unbelievable how this happens and it
1:23:35
happens happened with Baba Zumi all the time it happens with konzi it is you name it when it happened all the time
1:23:40
with us so yeah funny it's almost it's almost like the same people want to promote the same area it's it is I think
1:23:46
I think it actually is that you know what I mean you know you just made a I made an observation based on what you
1:23:52
just said you know we're losing everybody though Iran I mean you're just another one of those TV fishing
1:23:57
celebrities that you know has retired from the business of course he mentioned Bob uh retiring it seems like everybody
1:24:05
is kind of going their way and it it's uh it's it's sad it's sad because an era
1:24:11
is coming to an end and AG you know it's it's sad as hell for us who are still in
1:24:17
it we look around say man how many years have you guys been doing this we are going to this is our last shoot of this
1:24:25
season okay but the first shoot of next season will be for season
1:24:32
40 40 40 which will that is absolutely
1:24:37
amazing proud of you guys you know it's it's like you guys are icons of the
1:24:43
industry absolutely for sure I mean you've been around so long and people look up to you guys and and and the show
1:24:50
is phenomenal I love the way it's perform I love the format I love everything about it and to do it for 40
1:24:56
years you guys got to be proud of yourself I'm telling you that's a tough business to do for 40 years it is you're
1:25:02
right you're right but we are yeah we are very proud of what we're putting out and our whole team it's not just ANG
1:25:08
right it's it's Jo it's Jo Dean that's the funny part Nobody Knows the behind
1:25:13
the scenes guys you know exactly they just know the two guys in front of the camera but it takes a whole team and
1:25:19
yeah it really does yeah for sure yeah you guys are well the best in the
1:25:25
business right now but by far by we win by default is what you're trying to say you can say it no I'm gonna say you're
1:25:32
kind of in a tie still with fish there's only two left in the game
1:25:38
and they're the best on so else say n not much to be speak of which are you gonna do you film it all anymore Ron
1:25:44
have you do will you do a cameo on the show are you going to one show here one show there sort of thing or no no no no
1:25:50
I uh no no I I I decided just to just to walk away I mean you know if I do that
1:25:58
I'll fall in love with it again and then I'll get right back into what I'm doing so right you know I just uh you to stay
1:26:04
with the the tourism stuff and I'm going to do some little stuff here for you know the Canada bass stuff like this
1:26:11
just yeah just to keep busy but uh no I uh the filming side of it I don't think
1:26:18
so okay any um surprises so far now that
1:26:23
you're an Eastern uh is there anything that you say wow I didn't know that about here or these
1:26:29
people or whatever anything that you didn't know that you the hospitality
1:26:35
yeah it's crazy honestly like you know if you I lived in Ontario my whole life and
1:26:42
there's wonderful people obviously in Ontario I was growing up there and and
1:26:47
but it there's something about the maritime people it's nuts it is it's not
1:26:52
the same as on I guarantee is not the same as anywhere else in Canada I mean no offense to anywhere else in Canada
1:26:58
but the East Coast that you get in that whole region there from Nova Scotia New Brunswick pii all those Newland and it's
1:27:06
not just cuz we used to hear it was just Newland oh they're the best people in the world they maybe they are but I'll tell you a real close second best is the
1:27:13
rest of the East Coast that you know what I mean they're just it's a whole different mind frame it is it really is
1:27:19
it is way back and uh I mean your your your traffic is a moose on the road I
1:27:24
mean you you know you could drive anywhere at any time and you don't see any traffic and and then if you go
1:27:31
somewhere I mean okay think about it this way there's like 850,000 in the
1:27:37
whole Province people population right think about it how many people in New
1:27:43
Brunswick there's 850,000 to 900,000 people total yeah yeah in the province
1:27:50
how many people are just in Naga right exactly you know what I mean yeah
1:27:55
absolutely well I got to tell you this buddy if there was anybody that was tailor made to slip into that
1:28:04
part of the world and and sort of blend in good point it's Ron James because
1:28:09
you've always carried yourself the same way you just described the people who live there uh in Eastern Canada so I you
1:28:17
know what I I thank you Ang I appreciate that a lot and from coming from you guys means everything to me you know right on
1:28:23
brother buddy we'll uh we'll crack open a a beverage when we come down and see you I want to hear I'm so excited to see
1:28:30

1:28:36

1:28:41
French though I want you to speak French to
1:28:49
us all right brother we got to cut you thanks a lot for doing this uh really appreciate it and we'll see you in a few
1:28:55
days yeah best of luck out there all the best take care safe travels guys thanks very much I appreciate it all right Ron
1:29:01
James Ron James a legend man he's a great guy oh fantastic I meant that if
1:29:07
there's anybody that that you would say wait a minute you're from you're from the East Coast aren't you it would be
1:29:13
Ron yeah yeah right because he Ro yeah he has that that that mannerism about
1:29:18
him always happy and and gregarious and just
1:29:24
you know for you folks that are in New Brunswick uh make a point of running uh
1:29:30
into Ron go seek him out I don't know where he's hiding Ron James Outdoors James outdo look up if you can spend
1:29:37
some time with this guy on or near the water you I'm telling you will have the
1:29:43
time of your life so for sure well that was wonderful that was great now we have
1:29:49
to make it we got to get Leona on here exactly how are we how are we going to do that maybe I call her names like that
1:29:55
Leona I call him names like that he'll come on he's going to call me names hear this you hearing this come on Leo let's
1:30:02
do it buddy you'd be the best interview ever I mean no offense to Ronnie but like we said Leo is one funny dude in if
1:30:09
he we ever get him going on something oh my God he do it for the audience forget
1:30:14
you we don't care about you forget us it for the audience that's all I say come on the show come on the show don't worry
1:30:21
whatever Hang-Ups you got whatever like hangups just get rid of it just come anyways
1:30:28
that are it buddy we got a run we got uh we got some packing to do we got get all prepped up and readed up for uh Our Big
1:30:34
East Coast trip coming up man uh three weeks on the road oh never been done by
1:30:40
us not not not on fishing Canada only but I think in the Outdoor Journal days
1:30:45
yeah we might have done a back to back we've done a back to back we came home to to repack true true that's when we ain't coming home to repack I'm buying
1:30:53
I'm going to Martin buying some underwear piss on good pointy all right on behalf of
1:30:59
the entire crew we got to cut it off that's enough we're going uh Volvo behind the camera as usual Stellar job
1:31:07
you were you were spectacular today wow he was moving around like like a Jaguar yeah he's
1:31:13
getting ready he's getting Nancy with uh he wants to be on the road with us uh Nick thank you now uh by the way nick uh
1:31:21
comes and goes I keep making fun of him um on these podcasts but uh Nick is our
1:31:27
social media pretending he's busy right now I know he's pretending I'm seeing a screen he's got nothing on it yeah yeah
1:31:33
that normally it's a game or something on there but but this he's busy okay anyways good uh Nick behind the scenes
1:31:41
of course Dean Taylor our producer come on now hardest worker in the team right there that guy yeah he
1:31:47
