i want to just make sure we all
0:02
understand this is a
0:03
very very extremely
0:07
rare case a
0:10
manitoba woman and her husband were
0:12
fishing in manaki ontario
0:14
on the winnipeg river well i i'm
0:16
assuming they were fishing we're going
0:17
to find out here in a minute and
0:18
lo and behold she was accosted by
0:23
a muskie a costume wow
0:26
that was big enough to drag her under
0:29
the water
0:30
and uh she joins us now and i really
0:33
appreciate you joining us
0:35
good morning kim good morning
0:39
hi guys oh first of all thank you so
0:43
much for joining us
0:44
uh we know you i'm sure you're fielding
0:47
a lot of uh
0:48
phone calls and messages and and
0:50
everybody wants you on
0:51
but so interesting for us
0:54
for a number of reasons uh we we are
0:58
you know we love fishing for muskie have
1:00
been most of our lives a lot of the
1:02
folks who are on
1:04
watching this with us have grown up
1:06
fishing muskie but this puts a whole new
1:08
slant on that species
1:10
can you tell us what happened uh give
1:12
walk us through the whole the whole
1:14
process if you could
1:16
well there was about 10 to 12 of us we
1:18
were down on the beach at
1:20
north star village just floating on
1:23
floaties
1:24
and then we decided to hop in the water
1:26
and go for a swim
1:28
and i was just standing there and oh
1:31
the water was just up to my chest
1:34
and all of a sudden i felt this thing
1:36
brush up against my left leg
1:38
i thought it was weeds or something that
1:41
rubbed on me and then
1:42
all of a sudden they grabbed my right
1:44
leg and i looked down
1:46
and it was a huge musky
1:52
both of you guys fish right both of you
1:54
are our anglers
1:56
yes have you ever seen or heard of
1:58
anything like this before in your lives
2:01
i've heard of people if they sit on
2:03
their docks and have them
2:05
hanging over but i have never heard of a
2:08
fish
2:09
actually coming up and grabbing a hold
2:12
of you
2:12
and pulling you under so terry cam
2:16
i was saying earlier i thought you know
2:18
i thought maybe it was
2:19
we were speculating because we've been
2:20
out i mean so we see a lot of times in
2:22
the world of muskie and pike and big
2:24
predator fish with it
2:25
where a fish is swimming along and they
2:27
grab like that right but you're saying
2:28
you're
2:29
hiccups your legs were in a vertical
2:31
position and you come over and grab like
2:33
this fabulous right it came in and
2:36
turned and t-boned her in the castle
2:40
that is incredible that is crazier than
2:42
crazy and then has continued to
2:44
thrash hard enough and pull to pull her
2:46
head under the water from a standing
2:48
position that's
2:50
and there was all of us standing there
2:52
literally 20 feet away from her
2:54
in disbelief like we're not even sure
2:57
what's going on
2:58
yeah have you guys ever fished that area
3:03
for musky
3:04
there has been many people that cast
3:07
lures across there and have raised them
3:10
a friend of mine actually had a big one
3:14
very close to that vicinity a couple of
3:16
weeks ago
3:17
that he had no help so it got off he
3:19
couldn't get to the net so
3:20
he estimated that one to be around 50
3:22
inches so
3:24
wow oh yeah there's definitely lots in
3:26
the area but
3:27
nobody ever thinks that they'd fish away
3:30
from people
3:33
that's that's all we've ever seen uh you
3:35
know
3:36
as as we pursue these creatures
3:40
that's why this behooves us because it's
3:42
such an unusual
3:44
thing to happen with this animal it's
3:46
just what's the water
3:48
right there could you get a good look at
3:50
the fish
3:53
clear down there was actually a little
3:56
tainted turtle swimming around
3:58
bobbing around with us while we were
3:59
swimming and i think it might actually
4:02
been screaming
4:03
get out
4:06
if turtles could talk right
4:09
yeah you could see clearly into the
4:11
water and
4:13
they're sneaky obviously how big do you
4:16
think that fish was kim or
4:17
terry if you had it was uh a 50 had to
4:20
be a 50 plus inch it had to be
4:23
yeah the bite width like on the
4:26
bite runner and anybody can measure it
4:28
probably forever
4:30
because there it was around
4:33
seven inches wide wow i've googled
4:36
48 inch muskies where the guy would have
4:38
had a measuring stick inside its mouth
4:40
and it was five and a half
4:42
inches wide really yes sorry
4:46
plus i think that's the teeth seven
4:49
inches
4:49
wide right terry
4:53
i want to take you back to that moment
4:54
if if
4:56
we could so you're you're you're you're
4:58
in the water with your wife and
5:00
you guys have done this by the way
5:01
you've been visiting that area since 207
5:04
i believe so you're very familiar with
5:05
that whole stretch and everything else
5:06
you probably
5:07
you've probably done this 100 times i'm
5:09
assuming yes yes
5:11
so so you're standing there in the water
5:13
with your wife
5:14
and all of a sudden she behaves in a
5:16
totally irrational manner i'm assuming
5:18
that that's kind of what the first thing
5:20
that you see
5:21
but what's going through your head when
5:22
you know there's something going on down
5:25
there
5:26
like you're not thinking this is a giant
5:28
muskie pulling my wife down
5:30
down into the water like what's going
5:31
through your head at that moment
5:33
i i had no idea at first i thought maybe
5:35
she got stung by a horse fly in the back
5:37
or something and was just trying to
5:39
get it off her back like i had no idea
5:41
that was the most
5:43
like surreal scene like there like
5:46
there was numerous people standing there
5:49
just going
5:50
uh what's going on like nobody had a
5:52
clue
5:55
well we still didn't have a clue until
5:57
she got closer to shore and then we
5:59
could see the clouds of blood in the
6:00
water and
6:01
it literally looked like something out
6:03
of jaws
6:06
how long did it have a hold i mean if we
6:08
didn't time it but was it like uh
6:11
five seconds and maybe three seconds
6:13
it'll just
6:14
stay on there i honestly don't really
6:18
remember
6:18
all because i remember it grabbing me
6:21
and then thrashing me
6:22
and then pulling me under and all i kept
6:25
doing was
6:26
kicking and hitting it with my hands
6:28
because i do have cuts on my hands
6:31
so maybe about 5-10 seconds it lasted
6:34
but it seemed like it lasted forever
6:37
oh my god what happened then it just
6:41
decided to let go at that point
6:42
i guess so and then once i got back up
6:45
onto the surface
6:47
and was really screaming
6:50
then yeah then people actually realized
6:53
that you know what kim's not joking
6:54
around here there's something seriously
6:56
going on
6:59
pulled you under are you talking like
7:03
completely submerged under the water
7:05
yanked
7:06
my leg down it submer pulled me
7:09
right under wow oh my god
7:12
wow that is incredible what about now so
7:16
now kim
7:17
you have not had plastic surgery as of
7:19
yet is there time to heal or something
7:20
like that what's going to be the next
7:22
step go and see the plastic surgeon in
7:25
three weeks
7:26
and he wants to see how the skin is
7:28
growing
7:29
and then after six weeks he said we'll
7:32
figure out what our plan will be
7:34
to cover up all the scars i'm gonna have
7:39
for skin crafting or whatever
7:47
anybody watching this right now i'm sure
7:48
they're in total shock just like we are
7:50
because we live
7:52
and play in that arena
7:55
probably at least you know two or three
7:57
days a week all of us
7:59
we we swim and we we have our children
8:02
swimming playing and in water that
8:05
we know they're they're literally
8:07
hundreds if not thousands of musky
8:10
change that for you folks what what can
8:14
you uh
8:14
what can you help us with because right
8:16
now we're we're all
8:18
feeling i'm sure i'm not the only one
8:20
we're all feeling a little bit concerned
8:22
here
8:23
yeah what can you tell us all right i i
8:26
don't have any intention of going
8:28
swimming again
8:29
anytime soon i'm honestly i'm terrified
8:32
i told my husband this weekend we're
8:34
gonna head back out to the lake and i
8:36
said i'm not even going in the fish
8:38
in the boat to go fishing i'm just going
8:40
to stay up in our trailer
8:42
and i don't want to go down near the
8:44
docks or
8:45
the water because all i keep thinking is
8:48
that she's probably there somewhere and
8:49
she's just watching
8:51
and it scares the crap out of me
8:54
yeah yeah and justifiably so i mean that
8:57
traumatic experience right that's
8:59
something that
9:01
you know i just have constant nightmares
9:06
i mean that'll eventually go away but
9:09
it's only been four days since it
9:11
happened and
9:12
yeah it's very traumatizing yeah i think
9:15
it's going to be a few more weeks before
9:17
the reality of this thing sets in with
9:18
both of you i'll bet
9:20
oh yeah because right now you're you're
9:22
still just the the adrenaline is going
9:24
to be
9:24
insane i mean it's wow
9:28
i've been helping with dressing changes
9:30
every night it's a
9:32
wonderful thing
9:35
either one of you ever had an injury
9:37
fish before
9:38
you know i know pete and i we we hook
9:40
ourselves all the time or
9:41
or we'll we'll get bit by a fish when
9:43
we're trying to you know take a hook out
9:45
yeah does that happen to you guys before
9:47
well
9:48
we walleye fish like i'm not a muskie
9:50
fisherman
9:51
and we walleye fish and i mean yeah you
9:53
have the fish and you'll get the little
9:55
cut from their fins or something but
9:59
nothing no we have brought up several
10:01
muskie on our walleyes or smallmouth and
10:04
they've been shredded
10:05
i even got a couple in the net we had
10:07
them in the boats she knows what a
10:08
muskie looks like pulls up
10:10
but oh my god yeah and that's what that
10:13
fish looks like after it's been shredded
10:15
by a big monster exactly and it shows
10:17
the aggressiveness of
10:18
of a muskie or a pike even because we've
10:20
had pike do the same thing but they
10:22
and they're fearless right and they i
10:24
mean obviously
10:25
it didn't know kim was a human or
10:27
anything but it didn't care
10:28
what it was it just grabbed a hold of
10:30
them that it wanted you know it was
10:31
thinking food
10:32
or whatever or maybe an attack i doubt
10:34
that like it was
10:35
food obviously in their mind but they
10:37
don't care when they get a big muskie
10:39
like that gets on the roll it's the king
10:40
of the
10:41
king of the water right the lion of the
10:43
jungle i i would like to sort of uh
10:46
throw this out there if i could i i
10:48
believe
10:49
that this was a very rare moment yeah
10:52
um i i i i don't think that you know we
10:55
need to all be afraid of musky
10:58
attacking us from now on because this is
11:00
such a rare story we looked when we
11:02
first heard about it
11:04
yesterday we spent all day researching
11:06
to see when when did we have the last
11:09
actual documented real honest goodness
11:12
case
11:13
of a human being being attacked by a
11:15
muskie and and we can't find any
11:18
so so this is such a rare occasion you
11:20
know this is that perfect storm that
11:22
only comes by once in a lifetime i'm
11:24
sure
11:25
we have to we have to think that way
11:27
because otherwise
11:29
who who would ever collect water you
11:31
know so
11:32
you guys need to know that this this was
11:35
uh for whatever reason
11:36
this was just once in a lifetime it
11:39
happened you were in the wrong place at
11:41
the wrong time
11:43
um and uh man oh man i i just
11:46
i i i just can't put myself in your
11:48
position both of you
11:49
uh obviously more so kim because you
11:51
experience it but for you terry to see
11:53
your wife
11:55
being dragged under the water and that's
11:56
just that i can't even imagine
11:58
what that is like it was horrifying she
12:00
was horrified obviously
12:02
luckily for us at the time the people we
12:05
were in the water with and our
12:07
family out at northstar village all of
12:09
our friends
12:11
two of them are nurses two of them are
12:13
opp officers so
12:15
luckily for me so i got my own issues
12:17
with my feet
12:19
that's another story but luckily for me
12:20
they were there to help because
12:23
they took care of everything and i went
12:26
up and got my truck came back she was
12:28
ready to go to the hospital so that was
12:30
fantastic because without those people i
12:32
have no idea what i would have done
12:35
you know i wrote a little article about
12:36
this uh little blog about this
12:38
that is being posted today and and i
12:41
refer to it as the
12:42
craziest year that we any of us will
12:44
ever have to endure
12:46
uh obviously covet is is high on our
12:48
list but there's been a few strange
12:50
things happening this year
12:52
this is going to be in our top 10 i'll
12:54
guarantee you
12:55
for 2020 we're going to be talking about
12:57
this a long time
12:59
and it's just one of those things and
13:02
how ironic is it that it comes
13:04
during i know people are gonna laugh at
13:05
me it comes during
13:07
shark week on discovery right now yeah
13:09
and you know what else was starting in
13:11
manaki that day
13:13
the locals muskie hunt started that day
13:16
it's still on right now
13:17
no way
13:22
wow that is just unbelievable folks
13:26
i i can't thank you enough for joining
13:28
us there aren't any words
13:29
for us all we we feel with when we saw
13:32
and heard about this story we uh
13:34
we all uh were there with you because we
13:37
spent a lot of time in those waters too
13:39
we have fished those waters
13:40
and and uh for you to come on the show
13:43
and talk to us in person it's just uh
13:45
just at the moment we had a moment of
13:47
disbelief obviously because kim you
13:50
as you know you've never heard of it
13:51
before we've never we lived fishing
13:53
we've never heard of it really like that
13:54
and the story
13:55
when we read the story about what
13:56
happened to you so thank you for coming
13:59
on and
13:59
proving to the vet the world
14:06
that's another reason why we're like kim
14:08
doesn't want to do this kind of stuff
14:10
anymore i'm just trying to tell her get
14:12
the right story out because
14:14
she's reading stuff on social media and
14:17
she's getting angry
14:19
because you know people are saying uh uh
14:22
some of the most ridiculous things
14:23
ever it was a weed whacker
14:27
like okay yeah yeah exactly it was a
14:31
weed locker all right
14:32
nobody ever wants to run into that weed
14:35
to both of you
14:36
i i will leave you with this message
14:37
there are a lot of cooks out on the
14:39
internet
14:41
and this seems to bring the best out in
14:44
them or the worst depending on which
14:45
side you're on
14:46
uh we've experienced it ourselves don't
14:49
let it get you down
14:50
they're going to be there and it doesn't
14:52
matter what the issue is
14:54
they lurk in those weeds
14:57
um don't take it personal but uh once
15:00
again
15:00
i want to thank you for for joining us
15:02
and uh let's stay in touch let's let's
15:04
see how you
15:05
i'd love to kim i would love to have you
15:07
back on the program
15:08
um you know in a few months or or
15:12
or thereabouts and uh i i would like to
15:15
hear that that
15:16
you're back in the saddle you're fishing
15:18
again uh
15:20
you won't let this one isolated
15:23
little speck in time affect
15:27
the way you look at things because i can
15:28
tell from both of you speaking to you
15:30
that you've got great attitude and great
15:32
outlook on life
15:34
don't let this change it it it's a one
15:36
in a million hey you just won a lottery
15:38
let's put it that way
15:39
yeah we'll be buying tickets exactly
15:43
i appreciate it you take care of there
15:46
and uh we'll talk to you again
15:47
all right thank you very much and i just
15:50
like to say to 2020
15:51
enough already
16:00
literally that's that's scary man
16:04
that's like because i know a lot of
16:06
people
16:07
you just caught it with muskie legs they
16:08
don't want it i'm in the lake just when
16:11
they see a must like that and you know
16:12
you're always thinking how whatever
16:14
this is that's the reality yeah you're
16:16
one that one in a million or one in a
16:17
billion or whatever
16:18
been being odds but it happened right
16:21
here's what i'm afraid of i'm afraid of
16:23
you know this thing's good it's got legs
16:25
already but it those legs are going to
16:27
grow in
16:28
in the days and weeks to come as this
16:30
story percolates
16:31
and expands and uh and uh
16:36
gets out in social media um i i i
16:40
i wanna just make sure we all understand
16:44
this is a
16:44
very very extremely
16:48
rare okay and it might
16:51
it might be a one of and if anybody's
16:53
got uh any information that would lead
16:56
us to discovering a similar story i'd
16:58
like
16:58
i'd love for you to reach out to us but
17:00
i think it's a one of
17:02
uh i just think it was the perfect storm
17:05
everything
17:06
led to this i don't think we can put
17:09
anything
17:11
the reason i'm saying is my daughter
17:14
nikki's mother
17:16
she has been terrified for years about
17:19
going in water
17:20
both salt water and fresh
17:23
and for years i have reassured her that
17:26
it's okay
17:28
and a story like this could affect
17:32
a person like that in a very negative
17:34
way
17:35
so i i just you know it really
17:40
the same in the same sense being like we
17:42
look at it like like and said the odds
17:44
are ridiculous that will happen i mean i
17:46
swam my whole life i've never ever had
17:48
that and
17:48
everybody watching here on the sidebar
17:50
is watching us today has never had it
17:52
happen i'll pretty much guarantee that
17:53
you know i mean so
17:54
the odds are and you know what you
17:56
really what we would appreciate
17:58
and i know yeah everybody would
18:01
appreciate is
18:02
a few people share this actual cast
18:06
with other people to see the real story
18:08
of what happened if you can get that put
18:10
on your facebook pages because
18:11
because the right game is right social
18:13
media idiots out there that
18:14
want to take this and then flew into
18:16
something kind of crap
18:18
so if you can share this on your pages
18:20
tell people please
18:21
check out this this interview that anger
18:24
pete had
18:25
with the real victim here and then they
18:27
will hear the story
18:28
uh that we'd appreciate that and i think
18:30
the whole fishing community would
18:31
appreciate that too so
