KLP is the Fish’n Canada formula for how we teach the three most important elements in all of fishing: Knowledge, Location, and Presentation.
Fishing without knowledge is like driving in circles; you just can’t get there from here. You can never have too much fishing knowledge. Study fishing by eating, sleeping, living, and loving it. Know species, their habits, their history—as much as you can absorb.
Next is location. You can’t catch fish if they ain’t there. Finding fish can sometimes be a daunting task if you don’t know where to look. But, as they say in the real estate business, it’s all about location, location, location.
And finally, presentation. Keeping on top of the ever-changing trends and products in the fishing world is essential. It doesn’t take long to fall out of touch with the latest presentations, products, and techniques. But sometimes a peek in the rearview mirror can be just as important as looking ahead; know the hottest trends and winning techniques past, present, and future. By having a broader knowledge base of all pertinent fishing scenarios, you will be better armed.

THE KLP SEGMENT
Frequent viewers of The Fish’n Canada Show will recognize this formula from the KLP segment that has been a recurring staple of the program. The segment has typically been used to highlight which of the three key factors (knowledge, location, or presentation) played the most significant role in the episode.
Sometimes, it can be as simple as having the knowledge required to know when to replace a damaged bait:
But sometimes, the knowledge needed for success can become much broader. Take for instance this KLP segment from the 2016 Fish’n Canada episode, “Brook Trout Heaven.” Here, host Angelo Viola did extensive research on the region’s water bodies and was able to determine—based on data from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry’s stocking programs—exactly which lake had the highest potential for trophy-sized Brook Trout. Sure enough, by arming himself with the necessary knowledge, Angelo was able to land one of his personal best brookies.
Anglers who have taken the time to educate themselves on the KLP factors are also more prepared to improvise solutions to problems that may present themselves on the water. While fishing Lac La Biche with guide Ray Kohlruss in 2016, Angelo was able to think outside the box and make decisions that might’ve seemed counterproductive if not for his experience with various species and their behaviour on this particular body of water. THE KLP GOAL
Though each KLP segment as they appeared in the program would typically focus on just one element of the formula, it’s important to remember that it is a formula—the solution to your fishing dilemmas depends on a combination of all three factors. Knowledge. Location. Presentation.
As you navigate through the ever-growing and evolving library of Fish’n Canada “How To’s,” you’re likely to see repeated references to the KLP formula. That’s because we’ve found that success is nothing more—and nothing less—than a combination of knowledge, location, and presentation. It’s been our goal for the past thirty-plus years to provide our audience with as much information as possible to educate themselves on these three factors to be ready for anything and everything that could happen on the water. And this continues to be our goal for the future.
