Hiya folks,
Gord Pyzer here, from Outdoor Canada Magazine.
You know, jigs are probably the most efficient and effective lure, especially for Walleye. The question though, is should I pick the heaviest jig or the lightest jig possible?
And the answer, believe it or not, is the same thing, it’s a combination. You always want the heaviest jig you can get away with, but also the lightest. So it’s a combination of the two. The lighter your jig, the more efficient and the more lively it is when you start to work it. But a heavier jig allows you the ultimate in depth control. So it’s a fine balance between heavy and lighter.
Now, if you’re just starting out, I always suggest going a little bit heavier, and that saves you from letting out too much line and you start to drag and get snagged. Once you get a little bit more efficient, you can lighten up.
Regardless, a jig is the best way to go for Walleye.
