Hiya folks,

I want to talk today about backing it off. And what I’m talking about it is the drag system on your reel. Every time you go out fishing for the day and you start putting your rods back into the locker, make it a habit to loosen the drag off. If it’s a spinning reel, of course, you’ve got your drag up front; back your drags off.

Your drag is just a series of washers and if you keep them constantly tight and you never back your drag off until fall, or you never back it off at all, eventually, those washers get compressed and when you release them, they don’t regain their original shape or size, they actually stay compressed.

So make it a habit: When you put your rods in your rod locker and, for sure, at the end of the season, always back off the drag.
