Backreel and thumb. That’s what I want to talk about today.

Y’know, on all the good reels, all our reels today, they have magnificent drag systems. But, I’ll tell you what, you are much better. And what I mean by that is when you get a big fish on—as good as your drag system is—if you’re using a baitcaster, thumb the reel.

If you’re using a spinning reel, you won’t believe how efficient this is: If you hit the anti-reverse and backreel. When you get a big fish on, you backreel on a spinning reel or you use your thumb on a baitcaster, you are in absolute precise and total control.

Give it a try this year. Don’t wait till you get that big fish on. Practice a few times on smaller fish and then when you get the fish of a lifetime on a baitcaster, use your thumb—or on a spinning reel, learn how to backreel. You’re gonna land them every single time.
