Fish Talk – Measured Up

Hiya folks,

I want to tell you probably the first trick I ever learned as a little kid and it stuck with me no matter where I’ve gone.

Let’s say you’re out fishing and you catch the fish-of-a-lifetime, you catch a really nice one. You want to know, is that a 24″ smallmouth, maybe it’s a 22 – 21? You’ve always got a ruler with you! Even though you might have left your tape measure at home, you’ve always got a ruler with you.

Now what you do is, extend your hand as wide as you possibly can, and I know between my thumb and my small finger, that is 8″. No matter where I go, I’ve got an 8″ ruler with me. Now, I catch a big smallmouth, I put it right on the end of its nose, I go 8…16… wow 24″ smallmouth! Let them go. I’m as accurate almost as having a tape measure. You remember you’ve always got one with you, measure your fish before you let them go!
